National Puppy Day is the 23rd; this day was created in 2006 by celebrity Pet & Home Lifestyle expert, Colleen Paige. It is a special day to recognize the unconditional love puppies give us, and the joy they bring into our lives. One of the goals is to encourage us to adopt orphaned puppies. And March 29 is National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day. This day celebrates small business owners. These individuals spend countless hours nurturing and growing their young enterprises. The workload demands, and lack of a hired staff, often translates into long and late hours, and many missed family and personal events. But, all in all, they love what they do. After all, they are their own boss.

TREND SETTER

A Handful of Emeralds ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY GIA LUCIANO

Robert Palazzolo Designer

THE START TO AN UNUSUAL FINISH OF LEATHER JEWELRY CUFFS A YOUNG MAN WITH LITTLE DIRECTION WAS ONCE HANDED A HANDFUL OF EMERALDS! Robert Palazzolo of Dana Point is that young man and is now all grown up with a successful, unique jewelry business. It all started in his early 20’s, and the time was the early 90’s when a friend of his introduced him to her family who imported Emeralds from Bogota, Columbia. They liked Robert and took a chance, so they dropped $25,000 worth of emeralds in his hands and said: “Go sell them.” As he recalled the story, he said his hands shook so hard that he was afraid he was going to drop them. He knew nothing about emeralds, so he took it upon himself to learn everything he could learn about them before trying to sell them. And learn he did: he knew more about Emeralds than what they taught at G.I.A. and what jewelers even knew.

24

San Clemente Lifestyle | March 2018

As time went on, he realized that the value was more in the jewelry around the stone than the actual stone, and this realization stirred in the back of his mind as time went on. One day at the OC Fairgrounds, he saw a lady in her 90’s wire-wrapping stones and making earrings and necklaces as a demonstration. She had a little jewelry making book that she was selling for $5. Remembering the concept of the value being in the jewelry, he decided to buy it and started wrapping stones and selling them at a little shop in Laguna Beach. Each piece was one of a kind and took hours to produce, so growth was very slow. Around 2007, Palazzolo was looking at Swaortsky crystals and wondered what he could make that would not be gaudy, since crystals are not precious stones, and they are big. One night, in a dream, a vision came to him of a leather rock-and-roll style cuff. He woke up and found anything he could cut up, and came up with a way to float the crystal in the leather cuff using his knowledge of wire-wrapping. Voila! The cuff was born! He introduced the cuffs where he was selling his jewelry in Laguna Beach. They were a hit. The cuffs were such a huge success that they eventually overshadowed his wire-wrapped jewelry, which he ended up phasing out. With his newfound passion for leather cuffs, he ventured out to little boutiques in Orange County, which is when he found Avenue Accents in San Clemente. Little did he know that this store would be the place where he would meet his first jewelry rep who would get his cuffs into stores across the country. After years of growth and success, his cuffs have evolved into what they are today: rustic but elegant, feminine but strong, and all around cool pieces. Being fascinated with how he started the cuffs, I wanted to know more about how he comes up with the designs: ROBERT, HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH NEW DESIGNS FOR THE CUFFS? You can’t look at what's trendy now. You have to look into the future. I look at what crystals will be available in the coming seasons and what fashions and colors are forecasted for two-three seasons ahead. DO YOU CUT ALL THE LEATHER BY HAND? I used to cut each piece by hand, but as orders grew in size, I made a template for the cuff and had them cut for me in large amounts. I do still cut the first couple of samples for my new designs before I send them out to have die-cuts made. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT CRYSTALS SHOULD GO WITH EACH COLOR AND STYLE OF LEATHER? It’s really about feeling, and asking if it speaks to you when they are together. I place the crystals, metals, etc. on the leather to see if works together. I check it in the light for brilliance and contrast. It all has to flow and work together. Some leather may seem cool and neutral, but with the right stone, it becomes warm and elegant. You can find his cuffs on his website RobertPalazzolo.com and select boutiques in Orange County. March 2018 | San Clemente Lifestyle

A TROPICAL TWIST ON MODERN ARTICLE GRETCHAN TRUDEAU OF BAMBOO & BEYOND- SAN CLEMENTE | PHOTOGRAPHY MANNY ROMERO

BRINGING AN ISLAND INSPIRED FEEL INTO YOUR HOME DOESN’T HAVE TO SCREAM MAHALO. Using clean lines and streamlined modern elements, such as a sofa or side chair as the anchor, it is easier than you think to layer tropical accents for a pop of color and texture. Be bold and cover your walls in natural, organic materials (such as bamboo) or colorful wallpaper to make a statement. Or for a more subtle accent, use island themed pillows on a side chair paired with unique accessories on or around coffee tables for texture, like a rattan basket to throw blankets, books or anything in making your space feel like a tropical paradise.

BENEFITS OF WHICH, ARE ABUNDANT. Mrs. Pucker’s Lemon Shot(™) is a fantastic source of antioxidants, because our organic lemon shot consists of the peel, pith, pulp and seeds of the lemon. In the peel and the pith of a lemon, there are natural plant compounds and high levels of antioxidants including Vitamin C and Vitamin A. Both Vitamin C and A are necessary for the production of collagen and elastin, which help to keep your skin firm. When you consume the entire lemon, a group of bioactive flavonoids found in the peel and pith enhance the power and prolong the effects of Vitamin C. That, coupled with the citric acid from the juice of the lemon, helps remove impurities found in your skin cells. These nutrients promote healthy glowing skin by neutralizing free radicals, reducing wrinkles, improving dry skin and decreasing blemishes. Due to these benefits, Vitamin C is an essential beauty nutrient. Since it is a water soluble vitamin that your body cannot store, it’s necessary to consume a bit of it everyday. Let Mrs. Pucker’s Lemon Shots (™) become part of your daily beauty treatment, and you’ll be able to maintain healthy skin as you age. Order it online at PuckerUrbanFarm.com, and pick up at the following local business: O2 Wellness, Piazza Wellness (Dana Point), Pucker Urban Farm (San Juan), and OC Cryo (Laguna Hills). So, shake, open and drink to your healthy beautiful skin!

Lavish Your Skin

QĒT BOTANICALS PROUDLY MAKES AND SELLS AN AMAZING PRODUCT CALLED LAVISH SERUM SALVE. We always say that if we were ever stranded on a deserted island, this would be the one product that we hoped we had with us. It is special, unique, wonderful. It’s a national beauty award winner, and it’s our only salve that we formulate. In it we include our favorite ingredients from our serums and we blend it with an organic, Grade A shea butter. Lavish Serum Salve is a complexion lover and its use targets fine lines, wrinkles and areas needing repair. It helps to strengthen skin, is deeply moisturizing, offers nourishment and protection in hot and cold climates, and revitalizes the surface without leaving a greasy residue or clogging pores. Chapped hands, elbows, and heels will also find this wonder salve to be effective. After spending too much time in the sun, or suffering from a rash or peeling, your skin will drink up the nutrition from the serum salve. Just the right formulation of nutrient-dense facial oils from rosehip seeds, argan nuts, cranberries, evening primrose, and added Matcha green tea, are a true skin sensation. The clinical grade essential floral oils of lavender, jasmine, chamomile, frankincense, carrot, and wild raspberry treat your skin and will allow your complexion to be glowing before you know it. There are no added waxes or thickeners which can pollute the pores or feel heavy on the skin. Each ingredient speaks loudly with what it does for your skin, and all are carefully married for a purpose. In addition to using it daily, on a weekly basis, it's the perfect lavish, full-face hydrating mask. Great skin will stay hydrated and smooth, and uneven or skin needing a nudge will be toned and revitalized with regular use. If your skin already produces enough oil, then the eye area, your hands and feet, chest, elbows, and especially your neck will love you for it. Irritations, cracked skin around fingers, itchy insect bites, eczema, dermatitis, and fine lines and wrinkles all will succumb to this healing and moisturizing bliss. It’s highly concentrated, and a little is all you need for that extra boost of moisture and protection when and where you need it. Your new best friend: it’s meant to be used lavishly. It is lavish, indeed. You must visit Qēt Botanicals on Del Mar today for this wonderful product! March 2018 | San Clemente Lifestyle

PARTING THOUGHTS

YOU AND YOU “TELL ME, WHAT IS IT YOU PLAN TO DO WITH YOUR ONE WILD AND PRECIOUS LIFE?” ~MARY OLIVER

I understand this pattern of the continuous loop intimately, because I was living it. I would wake up new year after new year and it was like Groundhog's Day. I gave my life to my work, wasn’t taking care of myself and even though I had money in the bank, I was mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually bankrupt. And then I got sick. My journey into myself is what turned my life around. For a long time, my life was the quest of a destination. It’s like this for a lot of people. The quest for true fulfillment is why people chase things they think are going to make them happy. A relationship, a job, a house, a car, more money. I chased all these things and each time they would lead to the same place. Temporary and fleeting fulfillment that didn’t last. A little like empty calories. They taste good for a minute upon consumption, but ultimately you are left with nothing but an empty feeling. As a former corporate executive and breast cancer survivor, I now know that my personal power exists inside me. It was just covered up. The revelation of my authentic self has instilled confidence, self-worth and a courageous heart within me. And that has led to living a more fulfilling, rich, juicy existence on this planet. Is this something you would like to experience in your life? What inspires me the most is helping people recognize the limitless aspect of their true nature. To help YOU discover YOU. To be more of YOU. More of who you really are. My purpose on the planet is to help you discover the part of you that is a creator. That is why I have curated over 30 years of my own experience and study to help other people live a more fulfilling and juicy existence with the time they have left here. As you do your own inner work to raise your individual consciousness, to raise your personal vibration, to awaken – you uplift the entire planet around you. And, you naturally reside in more joy, fulfillment, happiness and aliveness. Which really, is what life is about. Imagine, if everyone turned within, toward their inherently loving
