Love Local

The most memorable Valentine I ever received was when I was around five years old. Handmade by my mother, she made it with red construction paper, a white doily, and stickers. It’s one of the few keepsakes I still have. Even at that tender age, I knew there was something special about it.

In today’s “Amazon Age” of deliveries in an instant, I appreciate the time, attention, and investment in something creative and handmade. This issue celebrates Santa Barbara business owners who create and curate wildly imaginative and magical items and experiences...just for us.

Our cover artist, Amy Logsdon, is a legend-in-the-making creating custom watercolor art, portraits, stationery, and personalized art for Apolis bags. We are honored she created original art for us that captures the local loveliness of Santa Barbara.

In this issue, we also celebrate the historic San Ysidro Ranch, voted “The World’s Best Romantic Hotel,” and a new property, The Post in Montecito, overlooking the calm beauty of our bird refuge. We also have stories about how you and your family can eat and live a healthy lifestyle with The Detox Depot and food enthusiast Zoe Echternacht.

We hope our Valentine’s Gift Guide inspires you with locally-sourced goods and services. As always, we hope you visit and shop our wonderful businesses. Your support means everything to them and keeping them here means everything to our entire community.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

REVITALIZE YOUR HEALTH

OXIDATIVE THERAPIES ELIMINATE TOXINS AT DETOX DEPOT

Detox Depot is the place to be to regain youth and vitality. It’s Santa Barbara’s first and only wellness center featuring HOCATT Ozone sauna, red light therapy, BioCharging, IOn therapy Foot Detox, PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field), Molecular Hydrogen, Cell WellBeing - German Hair Testing, and an Oxygen Bar where colds and allergies are addressed in 12 minutes.

Detox Depot’s fully trained staff and Director Dawn Flaherty have over 35 years of experience in oxidative therapies. After using oxidative therapies to address

her own health issues with a world-renowned doctor, she continued to train under him for four years. Since, Dawn has traveled the world training extensively in oxidative therapies and other healing modalities offered at Detox Depot.

“We know what we are doing!” Dawn says, emphasizing the importance of working with practitioners who are fully trained in oxidative therapies.

ADDRESSING DIS-EASE

Dawn has worked with hundreds of clients addressing detoxification of toxins and poisons so the body can return to homeostasis.

“Whatever the health issue, clearing toxins and restoring our natural environment allows the body to heal itself. As 90% of all dis-ease in the body is caused by toxicity, until you get rid of the toxins, your body can’t rest and digest… heal itself,” says Dawn.

“We can eliminate so many toxins in so little time with the HOCATT,” she adds. “Our clients sleep better, feel calmer, have less anxiety, better digestion, and look younger.”

Deemed one of the safest treatments when working with trained practitioners, the HOCATT includes Ozone, Far Infrared Rays, Steam, PEMF, Photon Color Lights, Co2/Carbonic Acid, Whole Body Hyperthermia, Aromatherapy, Ultraviolet Irradiation, and Microcurrent Technology. All of these technologies can be adjusted according to a client’s needs.

During a 30-minute treatment, the HOCATT immerses the body in ozone (supercharged oxygen). This well-researched natural healing modality destroys and inactivates viruses, pathogens, and toxins, resulting in a full-body detox and allowing the body to return to homeostasis where it can heal itself.

“Many of our clients come in proactively to keep the immune system strong and cells protected from all the incoming assaults of the world today, then we also see clients struggling with viruses, pathogens, bacterial overgrowth, pain, insomnia and much more that sometimes find immediate relief,” says Dawn.

“We have been Santa Barbara’s best kept secret for four years. Our new clients that find us often comment, ‘I’m so mad you have been here this long and I am just now finding you!’”

“Our clients sleep better, feel calmer, have less anxiety, better digestion, and look younger.”

Ozone has been known to

• Inactivate viruses

• Stimulate the immune system

• Clean arteries and veins, improving circulation

• Oxidize toxins

• Relieve acute and chronic pain

• Increase well-being and quality of life substantially

FEEL GOOD Food

ARTICLE BY ZOE ECHTERNACHT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Feeling good comes with fueling my body with what it needs when it needs it. Eating “healthy” is a vague term that means different things to everyone. I think it’s a disservice to say one restaurant or product is healthier than another because everyone has a different relationship with food and their body—there are complex and personal factors.

That being said, here are my local recommendations for when I’m focusing on consuming less animal products, using less carbon emissions, and producing less environmental waste. And sometimes, when I’m just in the mood for something lighter.

It’s Zoe from @bitemesb, your resident food lover and eater of all the things. Zoe Echternacht

AH JUICE

A favorite on Haley Street, this locally sourced organic cafe offers fresh drinks and food. It’s nearly zero-waste and doesn’t use plastic bottles or cups. Pop by for breakfast or lunch, where some of my go-tos are their original red pressed juice, lemon and ginger probiotic smoothie, and chicken and roasted beet wrap. @ascendinghealthjuice

The Daisy lives up to its name: it’s bright, fresh, and makes almost everything from scratch. They seasonally source their menus, offering thoughtful California cuisine with cultural influences. I love their pickle plate, mezze plate, salads, roasted meats, and toasts. Browse their shop in the back and stock up on rare, beautiful items. @the_daisy_restaurant

SATELLITE

This State Street gem offers farmers market-inspired cuisine and a natural wine selection. They focus on “ethical, environmentally beneficial agriculture and the freshest locally grown ingredients.” Some of my favorite bites are their yoga pants salad and grilled cheese. @satellitesb

SAVOY CAFE & DELI

A hometown staple for breakfast and lunch. They have one of the best salad bars in town, sandwiches, and around 40 hot and cold dishes to choose from to make your perfect plate. They are organic-forward, focusing on natural and fresh produce. My favorites are the Gaviota sandwich and their salmon. @savoycafeanddeli

THE NATURAL CAFE

One of the first restaurants in Santa Barbara to focus on healthier options in a fast-casual way. Their extensive menu includes all the options: salads, stir-fries, wraps, smoothies, juices, and sandwiches. My favorite order is their rotating soup, which always comes with a giant slice of wholegrain bread. @thenaturalcafe_official

FIGURE ATE FOODS

Part of the White Buffalo Land Trust, this local maker should be on your radar. Their mission focuses on restorative and regenerative agriculture, meaning farming methods that support an ecosystem to restore the land for future generations to use. They make Biltong, a South African beef-jerky, and Persimmon Vinegar, a naturally fermented, gut-friendly elixir that’s super for salad dressing. @figureatefoods

Magic Moments

I was given a watercolor of Amy Logsdon’s as a gift from my real estate agent a couple of years ago when we purchased our Goleta home. It was a custom watercolor portrait of my family in front of our new house. It was heartwarming, a framer.

You’ll spot Amy’s Moment Maps around the area and beyond. From pet portraits to travel maps, her work is memorable and accessible. A wife, mother, and artist, Amy Logsdon sees the special in everyday people and places and their milestone moments that hold hope in the heart. Learn more about Amy and her watercolor world.

DID YOU PAINT GROWING UP?

As a child, I often painted at home on the weekends, putting ideas onto paper, making holiday gifts for my parents, and turning homework assignments into extra credit by adding more artwork, almost always with pencils or watercolor. I was quick to start new projects at the kitchen table or my bedroom desk. Art was always my favorite subject in school. I used to get so excited to go to the art store on Victoria or get new supplies at Christmas. Blank paper still makes me giddy.

DID YOU STUDY ART IN SCHOOL?

I took a few art classes in my earlier education, including a couple SBCC classes, then chose a college major in Graphic Communication at Cal Poly, which combined graphics with printing. I knew learning how to execute my artwork in a world where technology was growing would be critical.

Knowing how to turn my artwork into print properly has been beneficial, as I can work on various projects, from wedding invitations to printed merchandise. There is an art studio in Ventura called VITA, which has teachers from the best art schools in the country. I wish I had taken more classes when I was younger; it may have saved me a lot of trial and error!

WHY DO YOU WORK WITH WATERCOLOR?

One thing I have always liked about watercolor is that it’s fairly easy to begin using, unlike oil paints, which are difficult to mix. Watercolor is affordable and doesn’t take up

a lot of space. You can travel with watercolors, paper, and some brushes almost anywhere. I prefer softer, more muted colors, and like to build my paintings as I go. I’m less bold initially, and adding color as I go gives me more courage.

WHAT ARTISTS INFLUENCE YOU?

I was always inspired by Degas and his free-flowing compositions, which captured so much emotion. Van Gogh’s color combinations stood out like no other artist. Georgia O’Keefe’s flowers found so much beauty in the natural world around us.

More recently, one of my favorite artists has been local artist Karen Bezuidenhout. I absolutely love her calming color palette and nature-inspired compositions. In the watercolor world, I love Caitlin McGauley, who paints the sweetest scenes without using a pencil. Donald Robertson is another painter who uses fun, bold colors with busy but brilliant compositions. He adds personal touches, which I also incorporate in my commissioned pieces. In pen and ink, I adore the chic, witty illustrations of Carly Kuhn.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Nature, social scenes, leisurely lifestyle, fashion, people spending time together. I love people-watching at outside gatherings. When I go for long walks to clear my head, the best ideas come to mind—that’s something I need to do more regularly.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST POPULAR ARTWORK?

I don’t make many prints, but I once painted a map of California for a gift basket company, and it sold well over 200 prints. In custom watercolor, I mostly do family portraits and Moment Maps—a collage painting of the best moments leading up to a wedding—or the most significant moments in a couple’s life together for an anniversary gift. Clients love creating these with me, finding the photos to include or remembering the memories to capture.

I’ve been creating Moment Maps with clients since 2007, and the idea never gets old. People like getting something personal and unique, especially when we buy so much of

what we need on Amazon, and it appears the next day. An element of surprise is gone, but with custom, personal artwork, no one can buy that without putting in some time and effort. The result is always special.

DESCRIBE YOUR CUSTOM ART PROCESS.

I like artwork to be personal and unique— custom all the way. For the Moment Maps, the more details, the better. When I work with clients, I ask questions about what moments or subjects might make good illustrations. I balance scenes for the overall composition. Small illustrations in the artwork might be a hobby or interest, such as hiking or cooking. Family members, locations, and pets are generally painted bigger to stand out. A milestone

theme, such as a wedding or anniversary, is usually incorporated. One of my favorite products is the 12x16 watercolor portrait, perfect for gifting. It focuses on the person more and less on the place.

HOW DID THE COLLABORATION WITH APOLIS COME ABOUT?

Occasionally, I have been invited to paint as a pop-up vendor in the Montecito Country Mart. I was doing custom watercolor portraits there and created one for one of the Apolis owner’s family members. We started chatting more about what I do and Apolis’ reusable bags, and how watercolor might work on their bags. They had various ideas, and I had always wanted my artwork printed for the masses, so we tried it. It’s been a wonderful experience.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

Exploring my style in the form of largescale paintings on canvas, highlighting family portraits into larger, more colorful paintings for the home, offering acrylic and oil painting in addition to watercolor. Black pen illustration has always stood out to me, and I’d like to collaborate with more companies on their packaging and stationery suites. Travel is another passion. Getting out in the world is inspiring, and creativity always follows.

COFFEE QA with LITTLE KING COFFEE

“Little King Coffee wants to build community,” says Grace Gates, co-owner of The Montecito Post’s coffee stop. “We imagine spaces filled with people enjoying a cookie with their 4-year-old, meeting their next neighbor, or playing a weekly game of chess.”

Together with her husband, Ryan Dobosh, the two (plus one), offer artisanal coffee and bites for big people and their littles. “It’s not always going to be the quietest coffee shop on the block, but Little King is a place to enjoy each other’s company.”

Here’s more from Grace:

WHO IS THE “LITTLE KING”?

The Little King is our wonderful son, Roger. His birth was our inspiration to open this business. We were both General Managers of fine dining restaurants (Bell’s and Bar le Cote) and we thought we could bring our expertise in hospitality to something for our community and have us both home for bath time.

WHAT DOES GREAT SERVICE LOOK LIKE TO YOU?

Listening. Everyone is trained at Little King to greet a guest genuinely and to not anticipate what is going to happen next. Some people want a quick coffee and no chit chat, others want to tell you about their day. That sensitivity to the person standing in front of you is great service.

IF THE SANTA BARBARA COAST WERE A DRINK FROM YOUR MENU, WHICH WOULD IT BE?

A Rosemary Latte topped with orange zest. It tastes like walking into a California garden in the spring.

NEW & NOTEWORTHY: THE POST MONTECITO

Enter effortless luxury

There’s a new gathering place in town on a private lane in Montecito. At the corner of Los Patos and Cabrillo, you’ll find The Post, a collection of specialty shops and destination restaurants.

Six historical buildings were restored to house a trove of known brands, up-and-comers, and dining, representing the charm and beauty of the Coast. A tranquil destination for locals and visitors, the Post’s upcoming calendar lists pop-ups, wine nights, cookouts, workshops, kid’s craft events, and more.

The developers, Joey Miller and David Fishbein, bought the property in 2022 and jumped at the opportunity.

“Every detail, from preserving the mature vines and gardens to curating the retailers and restaurants, was guided by our goal to create a place that feels rooted in history and

fresh for the community,” says Joey. “Opportunities to restore and reimagine gems like this rarely come along.”

Joey and David have ties to the area since their childhoods, and David recently got engaged and married here. He explains, “Each retailer and restaurant was carefully selected for their quality, vision, and ability to offer a memorable experience for visitors. For example, Maygel Coronel’s store at The Post is her first location outside of Colombia, while Merlette opened their first store here.”

We’re already fans of Little King Coffee, a family-owned Buellton coffee shop opening a sister shop here—read more about them on page 20.

Here are some of the shops and restaurants we’re excited about:

The Great is a lifestyle brand from Emily Current & Meritt Elliott known for their playful, nostalgic take on American classics. Their shop will carry their women’s collection, beloved sweats, and styles for man and mini. @thisisthegreat

Designed in Cartagena, Columbia, Maygel Coronel has quickly risen as one of the most sought after labels, particularly for resort wear, occasion dressing, and swim. @maygelcoronelofficial

Merlette is a Brooklyn-based atelier crafting thoughtfully designed garments that blend elegance with everyday ease. Since 2016 Merlette has focused on refined shapes, textures, and details that empower the modern woman with effortless femininity. @merlettenyc

One of the top men’s multi-label stores in LA, The Optimist brings together global brands with an eye for fit, quality, and detail. The mix of hand-selected brands includes exclusive labels not available anywhere else in the US. @theoptimist_la

What started as clean-eating meal delivery is now available for pick up at Organic Oren’s outpost. Think black truffle mac n’ cheese, quinoa bowls, chia pudding, and green goddess immunity soup—all 100% gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, and of course, organic. @organic_oren

Ospi at The Post will be the third location for this wellloved modern Italian concept by Jackson and Melissa Kalb. Homemade pastas and pizzas are served alongside craft cocktails in an energetic dining room. @ospi

Shoppe Amber Interiors is a home store featuring designs from one of California’s favorite and most followed interior designers, Amber Lewis of Amber Interiors. Her style is sophisticated, laid back, and inviting. @amberinteriors

The definition of timeless California casual, Velvet, has been delivering high-quality essentials for over 25 years. The ninth store for the brand will carry cotton basics and seasonal collections for both men and women. @velvettees

Fall in Love (Again) at San Ysidro Ranch

24 HOURS IN NATURE’S

ARTICLE BY SAMANTHA DURBIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAN YSIDRO RANCH
PARADISE
Rosemary Cottage back patio

John and Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned here in the Kennedy Cottage in 1953. Katharine Hepburn witnessed Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier wed in a secret midnight ceremony in the famed gardens. This is where Gwyneth Paltrow married Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

Trust the list of famous guests. Take in the dreamy photos. It’s no surprise San Ysidro Ranch was named the World’s Best Romantic Hotel in the 2024 Boutique Hotel Club Awards.

Whether you’ve been to San Ysidro Ranch or dreamed of going, there’s something special about it. The ultimate staycation, here’s my fantasy itinerary if I had 24 hours in nature’s paradise with my love.

In the late afternoon, we’ll check into one of the 38 bungalow-style cottages. I’ll take the Rosemary Cottage with the hot tub on the private back patio. The cottage has a private entrance leading into a spacious interior decorated with antiques and artwork collected from around the world. A

four-poster canopy bed, mason-crafted fireplace, and private garden boast old-world elegance.

We grab a couple bikes and get lost cruising the 550 lush acres, breezing by lavender fields, olive groves, and rose gardens. A hillside pool resembles the countryside in Provence. We tour the colorful vegetable garden, and I wonder what will be featured on The Stonehouse restaurant’s seasonal menu later.

After a relaxing dip in our hot tub and rinse in the outdoor rain shower, we head to the Secret Cellar for a guided wine tasting. Hidden within the Ranch’s 15,500-bottle wine collection, we’re surrounded by some of the world’s rarest bottles (including an 1893 bottle of Chateau d’Yquem).

We catch the lingering minutes of sunset from the fairy-lit terrace of the Stonehouse restaurant inside a 19th century citrus packing house. The fire is crackling, the staff is attentive, and everything is delicious. We cuddle in a red velvet booth for a nightcap at the Speakeasy at Plow & Angel.

The Veranda

We wake up wearing rose-colored glasses and have breakfast in our cottage. We stroll the grounds and approach a gorgeous terrace surrounded by flourishing trees and flowers. We pause to appreciate the moment and each other.

I want a massage, he wants a swim, and we agree to meet back up at the bungalow one last time after we’re done. We could have booked the Lovebirds room for a couples treatment. Next time.

After checking out, we don’t want our escape to end, so we go for a nearby hike to catch a view from the top.
