LIFESTYLE LETTER
Hello, Summer!
July 2022 PUBLISHER
Tammy Fellows | tammy.fellows@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
It’s summer, and in my household, we all take a collective big breath. On the last day of school, I rejoice just as much as my kids. No homework! No tests! No shuttling around to a zillion activities! There’s something about the word “summer” that brings about a mind shift. It’s the promise of relaxing days, barbecues, bright sun (OK, we have that all year long here in the Valley, but in the summer, it still feels different somehow), and fewer responsibilities. This summer, my family is taking a rescheduled-rescheduled-rescheduled family trip. We can’t wait. I’m looking forward to exploring new places and spending quality time with everyone—although with two teenagers, I’ll see how much time we get before there is complaining! Speaking of traveling, Jada June Totten has been traveling a lot in pursuit of her dreams of a rodeo career. Just 17 years old, she’s already a rising star— both in her sport and on TikTok! Read all about her in this issue. We also help you celebrate the summer season with all things barbecue, outdoor items, canned cocktails (perfect for around the pool!), road trips to cool Northern Arizona spots, and more. Wherever your summer travels take you, whether it’s to your backyard pool, to another state, or to another country, I hope you enjoy!

"Summertime, and the livin’ is easy … " I don’t know about you, but despite our hot summertime temperatures here in the Valley of the Sun, I quite enjoy the slowdown of summer. My kids get a break from the grind of school, we get to do a bit of traveling, and honestly, it’s just nice to take a breath from all the hustle and bustle. As a native to Arizona, my best childhood memories include warm summer night swim parties, backyard BBQs with family and friends, music festivals, tubing down the Salt River, and boating at one of our many beautiful Arizona lakes. Oh, and let’s not forget the 4th of July and all the fun that comes with celebrating the good old U.S.A.! I always love our July issue because we tend to focus on light, fun summer topics; food; drinks; and getaways. We hope you can kick back, perhaps by a pool, lake, or on a raft with a cold drink, and relax with this nice, easy read! Here’s to making fun summertime memories! Be grateful, be kind, and live well, Tammy Fellows Owner/Publisher

SUMMER ADVENTURE: SAN DIEGO ZOO WILDLIFE EXPLORERS BASECAMP
T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L
When the scorching summer temps begin to take over Scottsdale’s otherwise envy-inducing weather, there’s one destination everyone in the Valley can agree on for a drivable escape to a cooler climate, Pacific Ocean breezes, and an impressive array of attractions: San Diego. For many, Balboa Park—the cultural heart of San Diego—is the perfect spot in which to spend time, thanks to its diverse museums, ample gardens, meandering walking paths and, of course, the world-famous San Diego Zoo. And just a few months ago, the Zoo unveiled the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, its newest experience.
SAN DIEGO ZOO
THE CUTEST CREATURES AND HANDS-ON LEARNING This space, which is included with the price of Zoo admission, comprises 3.2 acres of education-disguised-as-fun for the whole family. You’ll move through four unique worlds of ecosystems that most people would only encounter during a trip around the world—and you’ll build empathy for nature and an appreciation for creatures big and small along the way. Marsh Meadows provides a peek into life below sea level, where you can view crocodiles, turtles, and fish comfortably housed in replicas of their natural habitats. Desert Dunes comes with playful fennec fox, curious prairie dogs, lumbering desert tortoises, and bashful burrowing owls doing their best to blend into their Arizona-esque surroundings. Wild Woods offers plenty of kid-friendly exploration in the form of a rope bridge and climbing boulders, plus splashing jets and a waterfall grotto for a quick cooldown. It’s also where you’ll find the adorable squirrel monkeys and coati. The Rainforest zone displays caiman, ocelot, and prehensile-tailed porcupines, but be sure to head indoors to the Spineless Marvels building—here, you’ll learn all about invertebrates (scorpions, arachnids and crustaceans, oh my!) and observe pollinators at work, complete with giant honeycombs that fill the air with the scent of beeswax. Don’t miss the fascinating leaf cutter colony, as these underappreciated ants are always hard at work building their fungus farms. End your tour by perusing the Cool Critters Reptile House, with immersive environments and digital game tables, among the lizards, snakes, iguana, and amphibians. GETTING UP-CLOSE AND PERSONAL Throughout your visit, you’re bound to run into various ambassador animals accompanied by their handlers, where you’ll learn so much more about their personalities, diets, and habits. Some guest favorites include an umbrella cockatoo named Mickey, a tamandua named Maní, and a sloth named Tornero—and each animal encounter will leave you with a newfound appreciation of nature’s abundance. Rodeo Dreams Jada June Totten Sets Her Sights on the Pros ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
Jada June Totten recently spent seven months living in the Valley, just outside of Scottsdale, to take advantage of the weather and practice her sport. The 17-year-old teen, who just graduated from high school and was home-schooled her last year so that she could be in Arizona, is an up-and-coming rodeo star. She is also wellknown on social media, with almost 150K followers on TikTok and 18K on Instagram who all enjoy watching her rodeo and lifestyle content. THE BEGINNING Totten was born in Santa Rosa, California, grew up in Hidden Valley Lake, California, and it was her babysitter—Cambra Owen—who originally got her into rodeo, she explains. “She lived on a ranch and after school she would teach me how to ride,” she says. Totten was 9 at the time, and she discovered that she liked horses and liked competing. At 10, she competed in her first rodeo event. “It was all of my school friends and I was still in the Pee Wee class, and you just kind of walk the pattern,” she says, laughing. “It was a small event.” It was around that time when Totten got her first horse, who she named Izzy. Then, in 2015, the Totten family home burned down in a wildfire. Instead of staying and rebuilding, they decided to move to Idaho. “It was kind of a blessing in disguise though,” Totten says. “It was such a small town, you just
knew everybody, and it’s kind of like everyone who grew up there doesn’t really leave. When we moved to Idaho, it opened all of my opportunities way more.” Izzy would move to Idaho with the family, but within a year of the move, Totten needed a new horse—one who was faster. “After I moved to Idaho, I started to travel a lot [for rodeo] and became competitive,” she explains. “I basically live on the road [now] with my parents. They help me follow my dreams, which is rodeo.” LIFE IN ARIZONA By October 2021, Totten was in Arizona so that she could continue to train. “I can’t really rodeo in Idaho [in the winter] because of the snow!” She would complete all her schoolwork on the weekends so that she could spend her weekdays practicing and then go compete in jackpots in Wickenburg. “Jackpots are quick competitions, and you can win money,” she explains. Totten loved the times she would spend in Wickenburg, saying it was like “a little cowboy town”—but also loved spending time at places like Scottsdale Fashion Square mall. While in Arizona, she lived in her horse trailer on someone’s ranch and she had four horses with her—Hick, Bobby, Buck, and Molson.

“I like it because I can show people my everyday life without it looking like my life is perfect, not like on Instagram.”
“I do so many events at such a high competition level that I have one for each event,” she says. “They can all do multiple events, but since I travel so much, I don’t want to keep using just one—it would tire them out.” In April, Totten—who was the 2020 Idaho High School Rodeo State President and had been named the 2020 District 2 All Around Cowgirl—left Arizona to head back to Idaho to compete in high school rodeos. She made the state finals, and is scheduled to compete in Breakaway, Goats, and Poles. TURNING PRO In rodeo, you can turn pro once you are 18— which Totten has her sights set on after her birthday in November of this year. At that time she’ll get her pro card, and her new goal will be competing in the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Still, that might not happen right away, she says. Qualifying for the NFR requires a lot of travel for competitions, and Totten has committed to attending Tarleton State University this coming school year and being part of the Tarelton Rodeo Team, which she is excited about. “Right now, I’m just wanting to accomplish my college goals with rodeo, but then after college I want to try to qualify for the NFR,” she says.

LAUNCHING HER COMPANY As do most teens, Totten had a social media presence and she enjoyed posting about her life. She has accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, but found she liked TikTok the most. “I like it because I can show people my everyday life without it looking like my life is perfect, not like on Instagram. You know how on Instagram it just looks like everyone has beautiful lives? On TikTok you can actually see that not everything is perfect. Also, it’s more engaging,” she explains. Her account would prove to be not only a way to connect to others and to share her rodeo life, but also a platform when she launched her company, Rodeo Trippin’ (RodeoTrippin.com). “I wanted to be like a normal kid and have a job,” she explains, “but I was on the road so much and I couldn’t figure out a way with my schedule.” Her parents own numerous businesses, including a print shop, and so her mom suggested she start a clothing line. Totten loved the idea, and she worked with the wrap shop’s graphic designer to design merchandise. Rodeo Trippin launched as an online shop in 2020, and Totten also promotes it via TikTok. It offers apparel, accessories, equine care, hats, jewelry, tack and supplies, and wild rags. “It’s going super good, actually,” she says. Just like her rodeo career.

YOU CAN! Get Your Hands on the Best Ready-to-Drink Cocktails This Summer
ARTICLE BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Canned cocktails are having a moment. More than a moment. Sales of ready-to-drink cocktails soared in recent years, with many pundits pontificating that it was due to the pandemic, given that folks had to enjoy their libations at home more often than not. However, with dining out and travel back, canned cocktails continue to fly off shelves. According to the Distilled Spirits Council, right now canned cocktails are second only to vodka in terms of spirit consumption—topping whiskey, tequila, mezcal, and rum.

PEACH PIZZA (for a backyard pizza oven)
Recipe from Myke Olsen of Myke’s Pizza, MykesPizza.com PEACH PIZZA TOPPINGS • 2 oz. gouda, grated • 2 oz. low-moisture mozzarella, grated • 4 oz. fresh mozzarella, torn into quarter-sized pieces • 1 fresh peach • Fresh sage • Pistachios • Oil DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Cut peach in half and remove the pit, then slice into ¼” slices. Note: Frozen peaches can also be defrosted and used. Prepare crispy sage by removing leaves from stem of sage pieces. Heat a small amount of oil in a Dutch oven or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sage leaves to the oil and cook quickly until bubbling of oil slows. Remove leaves and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Rough chop pistachios. Stretch out pizza dough. Break up mozzarella and gouda cheeses into chunks, and scatter over pizza. Add peaches. Cook for 5 minutes, rotate a half turn, and cook for another 5 minutes or until the crust has browned. Remove pizza from oven and add pistachios and crispy sage, and serve.

on Wellness Living - Melissa B. I have known Jodi for a number of years yet have never taken a pilates class from her. It was when she posted on Facebook about her new studio & a free class that I decided I would try. I am so impressed with the method, especially as a competitive athlete. It really helps with my pain management, restores balance & alignment & overall just makes me confident that I can get to a better place with my body mechanics for running & riding. Jodi is all awesomeness! She is patient, supportive, encouraging, positive, & listens to her clients. I look forward to my journey ahead with Pilates & Jodi.
on Wellness Living - Shawon D. I was introduced to Pilates back in the winter of 2019 & was recommended by one of my close family friends. I‘ve had a good amount of injuries throughout my career in baseball, but once I was introduced to Pilates, that season was the 1st time in 5 years that I played a season without any injuries. Pilates not only strengthens my body, but also gets my body strong in specific areas, especially the core! Pilates has helped me get in better-loaded position for baseball. I am a big advocate of Pilates & I believe in it! Also at the Firm Body Pilates the owner Jodi has welcomed me with open arms to the facility & I enjoy taking classes with instructors Maria & Caroline, who are athletes with a background in Ballet. So it was an easy transition as they help me along with getting the most out of my ability!

NOURISH SKIN STUDIO OFFERS LUXURY SKINCARE

It all began when Tunde Nessan represented luxury skincare brands for the luxury Canadian department store Holt Renfrew. Even as she pursued her nursing career, the world of beauty allured her. After having both of her children, she began to focus on the beauty and wellness space, and opened a spa and apothecary in Ontario. As she says, beautifully formulated face oils changed the game—not just for her skin, but now for her clients, as well. “In the luxury skincare industry, women are conditioned to treat the skin abrasively, leaving the dermis weakened and susceptible to dry, aging, and uneven skin texture. This is where a change in your skincare regimen makes a difference,” Nessan says. Nessan quickly noticed that she couldn’t find a studio or spa that offered the clean luxury beauty and the facials that she felt were needed. “A proper facial includes the neck, the décolletage, and a scalp massage. It doesn’t just stop at the face,” she explains. “All products we curate in the studio and online are what we use in our facials—there are no secret backbar products. It’s what keeps the authenticity and realness between the client and the esthetician.” This past February, Nessan opened Nourish Skin Studio in Scottsdale. There, she redefines what she calls “a foundational beauty experience” as she educates and customizes her bespoke facials for every client. Using her extensive knowledge and skill, she orients her facials around results that replenish the skin. She brings her experience of years of product and brand cherry-picking, as well

as from working with severe acne, uneven skin textures, rosacea, and many types of blemishes and skin concerns. Through the years, her passion has become a family endeavor. Her children have developed a preference in their skin regimens—her son is a firm face oil user and her daughter is dedicated when it comes to skincare, always seeking out brands, and ingredient sourcing with her mother. “You begin to appreciate the skin you wear 24/7,” says her daughter, Elisha, who built and manages the digital side of Nourish Skin Care. Nourish features a variety of facials, skincare help, and massages, as well as a variety of impactful skincare products. Not only does the family have a great love for animals, but Elisha’s beloved bunny is featured on the products, exclaiming, “Not only is the skincare edibly clean, but in fact is always cruelty-free, remembering that animals should never be subjected to being tested on with skincare formulations (or anything for that matter).” “Your skin is your largest organ, and it should be handled with care and grace—especially when it comes to thinner areas such as the face,” Nessan says. “Beauty isn’t built from the outside, it’s built in combination from the inside out.” This founder, educator, mother, and facialist dives into the depths of naturally curated skincare and esthetics to provide the most fitting facial offerings, and what it truly means to experience luxury beauty. Seeking Success With the Dawsons THIS LOCAL COUPLE STRIVES TO HELP BUSINESSES THRIVE
ARTICLE BY ANGEL FUCHS PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIA DUBOIS
Husband and wife duo Brandon and Natalie Dawson are true testaments to the adage that the impossible is possible with focus and determination. In 2019, the Dawsons cofounded Cardone Ventures with New York Times best-selling author, renowned speaker, and the world’s top sales trainer, Grant Cardone. The mission of Cardone Ventures is to help business owners achieve their personal, professional, and financial goals through the growth of their business. “We will help any business of any size reach 10X business growth in 60 months,” says Dawson. The 10X Approach was started by Cardone and says business owners should set targets that are 10X greater than what they believe they can achieve. Cardone believes that the biggest

mistake people make is not setting high enough goals, and that this concept works because by setting very high goals, if business owners fall short, they still find themselves further along than they would have with a lower goal. The Dawsons owned other business ventures both separately and together. They attended Cardone’s 10X Growth Conference, and within days they made it their mission to meet with Cardone and create a new business. Thus, Cardone Ventures was founded. Brandon is passionate about helping other businesses due to his personal experience. “I was forced to sell [one of my businesses], and I will never let anyone control my destiny again,” he says. “I want to help people grow and not make the same mistakes I did.” Brandon is originally from Oregon, and Natalie was born in Ohio. They married in 2021 after the Covid-19 outbreak forced them to postpone their original October 2020 wedding date.

They’d been together seven years before getting married, but had known each other since Natalie was 12 years old. “Her mom was my doctor and I’ve known her for many years,” he explains. “She lived in London for a while, and when she came back, I hired her to work in a dental management company I owned.” From there the pair hit it off—and found they had a knack at working well together. It was actually Natalie who first learned about Cardone and his 10X Approach to a successful business, and she encouraged Brandon to attend the conference. Today, Cardone Ventures—which opened its Scottsdale headquarters in December 2021—has 135 employees, with 110 of them here. They also have an office in Vancouver, Washington, where the couple lives part-time throughout the year. Cardone is headquartered in Miami. “We’ve been able to help over 1,400 businesses grow and scale,” shares Brandon. CardoneVentures.com

SUMMER FUN It’s triple digits outside, but in just a few hours you can be in cooler weather with beautiful views. Here are some of our favorite Northern Arizona spots to consider for your next day trip or weekend away.
CANYON COASTER ADVENTURE PARK Just opened late last year, Canyon Coaster Adventure Park is perfect for families. The standout attraction is The Canyon Coaster, which is built directly into the mountainside. It is the first (and so far only) coaster of its kind in the state—and the speed is controlled by the rider. Canyon Coaster Adventure Park is located on Route 66 in Williams. CanyonCoasterAdventurePark.com
SNOWBOWL While Snowbowl is best known for its ski offerings, during the summer months, you can take in the beautiful scenery of Northern Arizona from 11,500 feet in the air on its lifts. See the San Francisco Peaks from a bird’s-eye view and take photos worthy of a postcard. Once you get off the lift, there is tubing, a climbing wall, a bungee trampoline, and food and beverage offerings, too. Insider tip: To ride the lift, you must purchase tickets online first. Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.

While post-war culture of the 1950s has mythologized our dependence on and fascination with the automobile, this exhibition connects more closely to the counter-culture developments of the 1960s epitomized in the “Easy Rider” phenomenon that occurred simultaneously with various civil unrest movements.
