outh Fulton is rich with culture, full of friendly neighbors and bustling businesses. It will be my pleasure to make sure all of you are familiar with everything our area has to offer. If you have a business in South Atlanta, East Point, College Park, Fairburn, Chattahoochee Hills, Union City or Palmetto, we would love to make an introduction to folks that may not have crossed your threshold quite yet. In this inaugural issue and every month, South Fulton Lifestyle is here to highlight all of the good things that are happening on this side of the metropolis. Please allow me to introduce myself. I’m Erikka and I love this community. I went to school here more than a decade ago and now it’s a great place for my son to grow and play. I teach art history and this arts issue has truly been a pleasure to shape. Check the calendar for several arts events from music to film to theatre. Take a field trip to the Spelman Museum of Fine Art or take a yoga class at the new Wolf Creek library. In addition, there are helpful tips from parents and small business owners in our community.

AVERY LAUREN BERRY AND LT. EDDIE HARDEN PHOTOGRAPHY LANGSTON BERRY THE FIRST MEETING AND FRIENDSHIP GROWS INTO LOVE
In the summer of 2008, both Eddie, son of Eddie Austin and Brenda Harden, and Avery, daughter of Atty. Leighton and Dr. Adrienne Berry, attended separate summer camps at Tuskegee University. They became friends and decided to keep in touch. After graduating from high school, Eddie joined the United States Marine Corps and enrolled in the University of Alabama. Avery graduated from high school and attended Spelman College. After losing contact, they ran into one another at Tuskegee’s homecoming in 2010. They began talking more frequently and Eddie asked Avery to attend a military ball for the United States Marine Corps. Their conversations and visits became more regular. On Valentine’s Day in 2011, Eddie solicited the aide of Avery’s friends and surprised her in Atlanta. This marked the “official” start to their “more-than-just-friends friendship.” They continued to build their relationship throughout college by spending holidays and breaks together and with their families. THE PROPOSAL
Eddie graduated from the University of Alabama and Avery graduated from Spelman College in May 2013. During a visit to Alabama to surprise Eddie who was home visiting his mother, Eddie took Avery on a four-wheeler ride through the country. They explored Eddie’s family’s land and houses that had been in his family for years. As they walked around his great-great-grandparents abandoned house that was broken and tattered but filled with old furniture, relics and family photos, Eddie spoke to Avery about love and the importance of family. Eddie asked Avery to pick her favorite part of the house, which happened to be a room filled with mirrors and paintings. They walked into the room and Eddie began to explain that he had put much thought into what he was about to say and had talked with his mother. Avery, who thought that his behavior was “weird and fidgety,” became nervous but excited as she saw Eddie drop down one knee and asked her to be his wife. The marriage ceremony will take place in late March. March 2015 | South Fulton Lifestyle

ood things are happening in and around Atlanta, especially here in South Fulton with the addition of one of the latest and greatest of libraries: the new Wolf Creek m illia Library. I know you are thinking, “Library?” G n Branc ry h Manager Te YES, library! This is not just any library. The library’s exterior features striking copper-colored metal panels and stacked stone details. The sleek architecture gives the building a very contemporary look. Nestled on a ridge in a wooded landscape, the new 25,000-square-foot facility is unique and reflects its community. Natural light floods the space and large, floor-to-ceiling windows provide an expansive view of nature. Some of the amenities include a large meeting room area, a teleconference room, study rooms, a music room and separate spaces for teens and for children, including a spacious area for story time and a huge children’s book area. The library is extremely high tech. South Fulton native and 14
South Fulton Lifestyle | March 2015
Branch Manager Teryn Gilliam describes the level of the technology as immense. “We have Mondo Boards in all of our meeting rooms, a Smart Podium, self-check kiosks, interactive game boards, and a very impressive Automated Material Handling System for our book returns,” she explains. Gilliam gushes about her position. “I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to manage such an outstanding and unique facility in the very neighborhood that I grew up in. I’m able to provide services to patrons who are considered my friends and family. Coming to work is like coming home.” Along with the advanced technological amenities of the library, one of Gilliam’s favorite features is a special art piece in the center. “The tree sculpture in front of the large floor-to-ceiling windows is the first thing our patrons notice when walking into the library,” she says. The artist, Lynn Marshall-Linnemeier (who was selected through a community-driven selection process), created a dramatic focal point. Titled, Strength of Heart: A Journey Project
WOLF CREEK LIBRARY
3100 Enon Road SW, Atlanta 30331 Located in Southwest Atlanta, an area not previously served by a library, the new Wolf Creek Branch grand opening took place last September. for the Community at Wolf Creek, the 18-foot tree is accompanied by two benches at the center. Marshall-Linnemeier also framed several quilted works, which are displayed in the large meeting room. The quilt consists of large mixed media panels including photos submitted by individuals in the Wolf Creek Community in memoriam of their family members. The artwork is inspired by “agans,” textile-based soft sculptures and costumes used in the Egungun masquerade of West Africa, ceremonies honoring ancestors. The artist researched Wolf Creek and South Fulton historical records, conducted oral history interviews, and gathered photographs, stories and mementoes from the community. Residents can now check out materials, families with small children can attend weekly storytimes, and teens can come to study and take advantage of afternoon homework help. Everyone will be able to work on the public computers, use free WiFi, enjoy special weekly activities at this beautiful new library. Everyone who visits Wolf Creek Library is sure to be pleased. One of the best parts is the friendly staff who love to help and are part of each pleasant experience doing your visit. This is the library that will get you and your family back to the original “social media” site.

Decorating with
Family Portraits
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TIFFANY POWELL
T
here were always pictures all over my family’s home. For the most part, my parents had smaller framed prints sitting on top of mantles, tables and bookcases. My favorite was a large framed wall portrait of my family hanging over the fireplace. The magnitude of this portrait anchored the room and commanded attention. In this day and age, photographic images, including professional photos and family snapshots often exist only in a digital form. However, for those who are interested, there are a multitude of ideas for decorating your home with photography and family heirlooms. Hiring a professional photographer provides you with a dual investment: you are capturing your family’s memories and investing in timeless art. The fine art of family goes beyond just capturing an image and hanging it on the wall. Decorating using family portraits can convert your space into an area where family memories are kept alive. A skillful arrangement allows the images to tell a story, share your adventures or channel specific emotions. Nothing personalizes a space quite like professional photographic art that captures your special moments. If you are not yet prepared to make an investment in a professional photographer, do not be deterred from decorating your living space with photographs. It is a fact that images actually do speak louder than words. It is better to have non-professional photos of your family hanging on your walls rather than none at all.
HERE ARE A FEW SUGGESTIONS FOR DIY WALL DÉCOR WITH FAMILY PORTRAITS. CHOOSE IMAGES THAT YOU LOVE
It sounds so simple, but don’t worry about selecting a picture because the color pallet coordinates with the couch or current room décor. If you choose an image that you absolutely love you will always be happy with it. GO BIG OR GO HOME
Ever see a lone 8x10 hanging on the wall? It looks out of place. An 11x14 is generally the 16
South Fulton Lifestyle | March 2015
smallest image size that you should hang and a 16x20 or larger is best. Always be mindful of the size of the room when decorating your home with pictures. GROUPS ARE GOOD
Wall clusters are a great way to show multiple photos of your family. Consider a series of images of your children or family taken at the same time. TELL YOUR STORY
When visiting friends, family and client’s home, I enjoy looking at the pictures they have on display. Well-placed images help to share a family’s personality. THE TIME IS NOW
Do not wait for the perfect moment to take family photos and display them in your home. Prior to their portrait sessions, my clients receive a complimentary design consultation. Modern technology allows me to show how your walls will look with your images. Taking the guesswork out of the scale and placement of your images allows you to be confident in your investment. If you are considering hiring a professional photographer, I would welcome the opportunity to capture images of your family. My Journey to Africa LOCAL STUDENT AUTHORS BOOK ABOUT LIFE-CHANGING TRIP ARTICLE SUMMER ROBINSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
S
ummer Robinson had an opportunity to visit Africa this summer. It was a life changing experience for this bright 17-year-old high school senior and Atlanta resident. She spent 25 days in Africa visiting Ethiopia and Ghana. “My life will never be the same,” says Summer as she reflected on her recent journey. She was so inspired that she kept a journal and took many photos to remember the experience. She has written a book about her journey. Summer lights up every time she is asked about the trip. This soft-spoken young lady has a powerful message for people of African descent. “I just want everyone to know their history, to be proud of their heritage and inspired to do more.” Her infectious smile and warm spirit make you know the book will be an eye opener for young and old. She captures her audience and is very persuasive in her presentation. Summer envisions her work as an eye opener for many, especially teens. The book entitled Discovering Summer Abroad: A Teen’s Journey To Africa is available on Amazon and orders can be placed at CreateSpace.com/4986371.

Healthy Eating Tips for Kids
ARTICLE SHONTÉ PRESS
• Smoothies are a great way to sneak fruits and vegetables into your child’s diet. • Encourage your children to make healthier eating choices by involving them in the food preparation process. • For every meal that your child consumes, make sure that 50 percent of the plate contains some type of fruit and/or vegetable (preferably raw). • Get your children to drink more water by putting fresh or frozen fruit in a large container of water and letting it sit overnight. You’ll have a fruity and refreshing treat the next day. • Take your kids produce picking for a fun and healthy learning project. Then make a special treat with the items that you pick. If you can take a day trip to north Georgia, check out Mercier Orchards for strawberry, blueberries, cherries, blackberries and apples. • Make snack time exciting by thinking outside of the box. Tin Tin Snacks are a great way to do so. Simply pull out a cupcake pan and place a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in the separate compartments plus a healthy dipping sauce (i.e. yogurt, peanut butter, salsa, etc.). Parent’s Corner
What Kind of Parent Are You? EXAMINING THE THREE PARENTING STYLES ARTICLE R. JOHNSON-VERWAYNE, PSY.D.
A
tweet by Dr. Steve Perry stated, “Rich or poor, black, white or other, there’s a pandemic of horrible parenting going on. Unchecked kids act like animals.” YES!! He couldn’t have said it better. As the “resident expert,” my friends often ask me what is going on. They want to know if they are on target with their parenting. After all, children don’t come with a manual. One brought up a great point in saying that her mother’s generation talked about how they “got beat (spanked) for little things.” Great point. Many current parents are trying to do the exact opposite of what
their parents did to them, but you can’t “throw the baby out with the bath water.” If you know me, I love the “dialect.” You can be a better parent and maintain some of the values instilled in you by your parents. According to Diana Baumrind, there are three parenting styles: 1) authoritarian, 2) authoritative and 3) permissive (laissez-faire). The authoritarian parent is the ultimate disciplinarian, or better described as the drill-sergeant. They believe that children should be seen and not heard and that adults are never to be questioned. These
parents produce anxious, defiant, rebellious children with low self-esteem. Permissive parents are the complete opposite. They befriend their children and have little rules or structure. Children are allowed to do whatever they want, when they please. Permissive parents are unknowingly negligent. These parents produce wild, disrespectful, unsure, confused children who often disrupt others and find it hard to function within the constraints of society. Finally, authoritarian parents are ideal parents. They present firm structure and boundaries, with a balance of love, warmth and playfulness. Authoritarian parents are highly involved with their children. They aren’t scary. They demand greatness from their children within reason and they accept themselves and their children as human beings who will make mistakes. These parents produce kind, confident, competent, successful children. Note that it is perfectly ok to be a drill sergeant or hands-off parent from time to time. Parenting is not an exact science. Relax a little and enjoy it. If you mess up, acknowledge it and keep it pushing. Chances are, if you’re even reading this article you are an interested and involved parent, or you desire to be, so keep it up. Until next time remember two things: be warm and be demanding. Happy parenting. Dr. R. Johnson-Verwayne is a licensed clinical psychologist at Standard of Care Psychological Services on Cascade Rd. StandardOfCarePsychological.com

Parting Thoughts
The Atlanta I Know WORDS SALEEMAH JACKSON
C
ontrary to what the rest of the world may see on weekly television shows, the Atlanta I know is not defined by weave pulling, wine throwing and adult tantrums. It’s not defined by a contaminated version of the peach-flavored American dream in which men and women succumb to their basest human emotions in order to protect their fragile egos. With a careless right hook to the face of the legacy that past generations fought and died to build and protect, those who are recognized as “real” fail to authentically uplift and progressively better the very people who share the same ethnicity and oft times the same struggle. That’s not the Atlanta I know. The Atlanta I know is a bastion for culture, exploration and celebration of a unique geographical gumbo enhanced by being home to the world’s busiest airports; a place where the uniqueness of each neighborhood in the city is interlocked with a new South and an old-fashioned Southern hospitality. The Atlanta I know is a place where newer green initiatives like the Belt Line carve a new path in the middle of historic neighborhoods like Old 4th Ward and the West End, and storied legacies continue to pave the way in new subdivisions like those off Cascade Road and Camp Creek Parkway. It’s a city where families can ride the Skywheel and see the beautiful city skyline. The Atlanta I know is a place where the working man and the executive can ride the revitalized street car. Where doctors, dentists, a fire chief, a school superintendent and a mayor look like my children, the Atlanta I know shines. It shines as a beacon to other cities around the world, to a generation struggling to breathe but yet not
resigned to throw their hands up in defeat that a dream deferred is different from a dream realized. The Atlanta I know shines in South Fulton County, a part of the city that is on the cusp of the southern perimeter and forms a triangle with the cities of East Point and College Park. It shines in the soccer fields at Cliftondale Park and the tennis center on Stonewall Tell Road. As Atlanta shines, South Fulton County shines. Where Broadway talent is enjoyed for off Broadway prices at Southwest Arts Center and Tri-Cities high school fosters the next generation of talented actors, South Fulton shines. Whether enjoying the sweetness of Sammy’s Cheesecakes or the heartwarming soul food of Gladys Chicken and Waffles, those who call South Fulton home know that this part of the city is truly “It.” They know it when they visit the libraries on Cascade and Enon Roads and nationally known authors attend their book clubs. They know it when in spite of those who try to damper their efforts to create great homes in great neighborhoods, they resolve to join together instead of resolving problems alone. The Atlanta I know as the crown jewel of the larger region South Fulton County is a microcosm of an America that is hopeful going forward in light of a past year more challenging than generations have witnessed in recent decades. Yet, more and more Atlantans, both recent and seasoned, continue to move to South Fulton. There’s opportunity here, an opportunity in this corner of our great city to teach our children to leave the world a little better than we found it. That’s the Atlanta and the South Fulton I know.
