hen I met the engaged couple highlighted in our feature love story, you could truly feel the love in the air. Things were blooming everywhere, the sun was shining, and goats frolicked in their pen. Serenbe Farm where we did the shoot is a peaceful oasis right here in Fulton County, featuring organic farms, horses and even an inn and restaurants. Derrick and Micheala were just eight days away from their ceremony, full of love, laughter and hope for their lives together. In this picturesque setting, our photographer was really able to capture how much in love they were. Photo by Tiffany Powell Photography Jewelry by Jasmine at

In His Moment THE GROOM GETS TO SHINE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROSS OSCAR KNIGHT AND PROVIDED

E

ver wondered what men are thinking and feeling on their wedding day? Some are anxious and excited. Other men may be indifferent or feel like a guest at their own wedding. The bride naturally demands the lion's share of attention, right? Men just need an outlet to share their emotion . Ten-year veteran wedding photographer, Ross Oscar Knight, has given the “silent” groom a voice. In his new book, HIM: In His Moment (IHM), a 100-page, full-color hardback book with 45 photographs, Knight explores the intimate journey of 35 real men from across the globe as they mentally and emotionally prepare to see their bride and embark into marital bliss. Stories of cultural fusion, uncontrollable weather and a missing best man are candidly told on a roller coaster ride of laughter, sadness and ultimate joy. For example, Dr. George Freeman is all smiles on his wedding day as he gets ready to meet his lovely bride at the altar. Knight captures a range of emotions through the images in this book. A commercial states that while everyone is looking at the bride, the bride is looking at the groom. By redirecting the standard gaze, IHM ensures that this moment is preserved for eternity.

Dry Needling THE BENEFITS AND USES IN PHYSICAL THERAPY ARTICLE ERICA FRANKS

H

ave you heard the term “dry needling” used lately among physical therapists (PT's)? Dry needling is becoming more popular and PT's earn certifications before utilizing in patient care. Similar to acupuncture, dry needling has key differences. It is not based on ancient theories of traditional Chinese medicine, such as altering the flow of energy through Chinese meridians for the treatment of diseases. Modern dry needling is based on western neuro-anatomy and scientific studies of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Both dry needling and acupuncture involve a thin mono-filament needle in which sterile disposable needles are used for each patient. So what is it exactly? Dry needling is a form of therapy used in conjunction with other therapy in which thin fine needles are inserted into painful knots in muscles, tendons, ligaments or near nerves in order to stimulate a healing response in painful musculoskeletal conditions. The advantage is that deeper parts of muscles can be treated, where hands and fingers alone cannot reach. Dry needling is evidence-based and used for acute and chronic conditions. Research shows some predetermined number of treatments for various diagnosis but the amount of treatment will also depend on other medical conditions: age and physical condition, compliance with other exercises and whether it is a new versus an old injury. Some chronic cases may require more needling. Dry needling can be used anywhere from headaches, neck pain, shoulder tendinitis, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, knee pain

and osteoarthritis, sciatica, piriformis syndrome, plantar fascitis, fibromyalgia, general low back pain and more. What can you expect? Dry needling is considered an invasive approach and is usually not painful. You may initially feel the needle going in more for less healthy tissues where the muscle may be sensitive and/or shortened or has active trigger points which a cramp or twitch response is felt. Before receiving treatment, your therapist will review all precautions and complications before consent to proceed. After treatment, you may experience general soreness or sometimes increased pain, not a bad sign. Typically to avoid discomfort, your therapist may provide heat, ice or gentle stretches. Are you interested in dry needling or do you think you could benefit? If so, ask your physical therapist if dry needling would be beneficial in conjunction with other manual and physical therapy treatment to your rehab program.

You CAN Do It Yourself EASY, BUDGET-FRIENDLY WEDDING DECOR ARTICLE RAIONI MADISON-JONES

T

he DIY (Do-It-Yourself) craze has become a nationwide trend as brides and grooms attempt to create personalized memorabilia for their special day. With the help of websites like Pinterest, Etsy and YouTube, you can easily tap into your inner creativity to produce priceless mementos for your family and guests to enjoy. Projects like guest invitations, favors, bouquets and centerpieces are much easier to create than you think. Not only is DIY creative but it’s budget-friendly, too. Here are a few tips on how you can make your wedding day DIY project a success:

START SMALL. Don’t overwhelm yourself trying to make your own three-tier fondant cake

or crystal chandeliers to hang from the ceiling. That’s why the professionals are there. If you’re interested in trying your own thing, test your skills by making your own table tents, invitations or thank you cards. Practice by using online templates provided by Microsoft, HP or Adobe Photo to get you going. SHOP SMART. Believe it or not, stores like Dollar Tree and Deals offer a wide variety of items that are commonly used in wedding decorations. Items like marbles, stones, vases and glasses can be bought in bulk on their websites and delivered to your home in no time. SOLICIT HELP. Is your free time limited? Are you slacking on hanging out with your girl-

friends? No need to worry. Plug in your hot glue gun and invite your closest girlfriends over for a night of DIY fun. Create an assembly line with snacks and drinks within close reach. It’s a win-win situation that allows you to have more time with your friends and less time stressing about your big day. One of my DIY secrets: ribbon is a simple accent that can enhance the beauty of the most unpretentious items. Look how this bland votive candle comes to life with a piece of ribbon, faux sunflower and rhinestone center.

Raioni Madison-Jones is a youth development professional specializing in nonprofit management, grant writing and program development. She offers mentoring services through her 501(c)(3) organization, 3D Girls, Inc. More information about her work can be found at 3DGinc.org. She can be reached by email at 3dgirlsinc@gmail.com. Awesome Atlanta provides this no-strings attached gift to individuals or groups. What’s even more amazing is that 501(c)3 status has no bearing on an applicant’s “awesome quotient.” Anyone can apply. Saucy After 5 BASIL SAUCE 3 WAYS ARTICLE CICILY NEWBY

E

very morning while showering, getting dressed and drinking a cup of coffee in under 13 minutes, I acknowledge my blessings. It is admittedly then that I give myself a pass to simply plow through the controlled chaos that most people simply call “the morning” and promise myself and my family that the evening will be a calmer experience shared over a good meal that we can all appreciate. I call myself “Saucy After 5,” meaning that as evening comes, so does my willingness to relinquish the corporate jargon, close my laptop and open the lids of my favorite herbs and spices to create my favorite accompaniment to almost everything delicious… sauce. I have the deepest appreciation for anything that you can dip into, schmear on, drizzle…sweet or savory, you name it. Sauces can be made quickly using fresh, healthy ingredients and you can actually use the whole bundle of whatever fresh herb you’ve purchased if you have a plan. With each recipe, I share a bit of my passion for fresh basil using one base sauce that you can develop and use to enhance many of your favorite foods.

FRESH BASIL VINAIGRETTE

PREPARATION

• • • • • • • • • • •

Blend all ingredients in a small blender or food processor until smooth. Serve atop kale leaves massaged with olive oil, kosher salt, fresh black pepper and lemon juice.

1 ¾ cups basil leaves 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2.5 tablespoons red wine vinegar 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons chopped shallots 1 clove fresh garlic 1 tablespoon good honey 1/16 teaspoon of red pepper flakes Pinch of kosher salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

BASIL AVOCADO DIP

• • • •

¾ cup Fresh Basil Vinaigrette 1 ripe avocado 1 teaspoon red pepper sauce 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice

PREPARATION

Smash the avocado, add all other ingredients and mix well by hand. Serve with fresh cut vegetables such as red pepper spears. BASIL DIJON SAUCE

1/2 cup Fresh Basil Dressing 2 sprigs fresh dill ½ teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard PREPARATION

Wisk all ingredients together. Serve atop a grilled or seared wild salmon filet. Enjoy them all, in any order that you like. Keep it saucy. Find more delicious delights at SaucyAfter5 on Instagram. May 2015 | South Fulton Lifestyle

The rustic inn lies adjacent to the working organic garden that supplies the farm-to-table meals at The Farmhouse restaurant. The hills are green and flowers bloom all around the property. Most couples exchange vows in one of the expansive meadows that can be decorated to suit any taste and theme. Another popular ceremony spot is under a huge majestic oak. There are so many perks to having your wedding at Serenbe. Right onsite, there is a venue for each event during your wedding weekend: your rehearsal dinner, ceremony and

reception. It is great to have all of your friends and family here for the whole weekend. No need to deal with traffic or getting lost in the hustle and bustle of the city. Serenbe is located only 20 minutes from the airport, which makes it very convenient for everyone traveling out of town. “Being here for the entire weekend allows the bride to relax some and not be too stressed," says Madison Taylor, events and conference manager. "The Inn offers many activities that guests find enjoyable here: hayrides, animal village, bike trails, a ropes course and fishing. Guests can also enjoy walking to the community to check out the shops and restaurants.” In June of 2015, the expanded Inn and ballroom will be unveiled. A short trip down South Fulton Parkway transports you to a simpler time, whether for a wedding, a lazy Sunday brunch, or a weekend “staycation” to unplug and connect with loved ones. More information can be found at SerenbeInn.com.

One of my favorite places to go to in South Fulton is Serenbe. Not just Serenbe, but the Blue Eyed Daisy Bakeshop. I originally went there for the cupcakes. When I heard that the chef had won Cupcake Wars, I had to check it out. I was delighted. The food reminds you of classic Southern comfort food, from pimento cheese sandwiches and mac & cheese, to deviled eggs and amazingly delicious hamburgers. Not only do they have GREAT desserts, all of the breakfast, lunch and brunch food is just as good. The friendly staff, great food and unique décor keeps me coming back. - Tamiko Corbin BLUE EYED DAISY BAKESHOP

Forever I Love...

ATLANTA

DERRICK AND MICHAELA: ALWAYS IN MY HEART

It was love at first sight when Derrick Mixon met Michaela Grinnell on July 24, 2012, a beautiful day. Although they didn't know it yet, they were destined to become best friends and lifetime partners. Derrick is a personal trainer and wellness lifestyle consultant whose new company, BeSquared Wellness, led him to the gym where he first met Michaela. Michaela is a business administrative and marketing consultant who also has a passion for working in film, television and theater production. It was a match made in heaven, since they are good-hearted and fun individuals who love to entertain in a way that positively impacts the lives of others. In 2014, on Christmas Eve, Derrick asked Michaela to be his wife with a custom-made, heart-shaped pendant. On April 4, 2015, they exchanged rings and vows in the shadow of Stone Mountain. That day, Derrick and Michaela began their lifelong journey together as Mr. and Mrs. Mixon, demonstrating the true meaning of love to everyone they engage, especially their future children.

Recently married and engaged couples in the Atlanta area recount their love stories. 18

ARTICLE ERIKKA MITCHELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BREANA RAINGE, TIFFANY POWELL PHOTOGRAPHY AND PROVIDED JOHN AND SHREE: A LOVE REKINDLED

On February 14, 2015, John T. Nuckles, a graduate of the University of Georgia, and L. Shree Sullivan, a Spelman alumna, united in Holy matrimony at the Eighth Street Missionary Baptist Church in North Little Rock, Arkansas, after a 20-year separation. The couple dated for a few months in 1994 and then went their separate ways. As fate would have it, on a cold winter night in February 2014, Shree's furnace was malfunctioning. Shree called John to light her pilot. Not only did he light her pilot, he lit her fire, and it still burns brightly today. TANAYA AND AUTHUR: THE WASHINGTON’S STORY IN THEIR OWN WORDS

My husband and I met in passing while I was volunteering at KIPP WAYS Academy as a Spelman College student and a first-year band director at KIPP WAYS. In 2009, when I started working at KIPP WAYS, both of our lives were in totally different places. We both had our own respective relationships and kids over the years. We bonded over mutual interests such as music and basketball and became really good friends at work. Because we have three young children between the two of us, we were careful to take things slowly and get to know one another before becoming serious. We continued to focus on our passion for educating youth and raising our own children, while building a strong foundation for the union to come. Authur’s proposal was a complete surprise and one of the happiest moments of my life. Every year Authur and I take a special trip during the Fourth of July weekend to Essence Festival in New Orleans because my birthday is July 5th. As educators at a year-round school, it’s practically the only weekend in the year that we turn off and go all out to have fun. During the 2013 Essence Festival weekend, Authur proposed with a live band as the backdrop. Our kids, both biologically and students from work, were ecstatic to hear the news. As we grow and learn in our marriage, we strive to be a model for the children that we serve in Southwest Atlanta community for what love, commitment and family should be.

KEDRA AND JASON: A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

Who would have thought a simple party invite would create such a chance encounter of two longing souls? It only could have been divine intervention that allowed both Jason and Kedra to end up at a mutual friend’s birthday party. About three months later they decided to spark a friendship that has blossomed into a loving bond. Jason, a co-worker of the birthday boy, and Kedra, an elementary and high school classmate, were casually introduced and through a little conversation they found out that they ironically both had very similar upbringings and were at similar transitions in their lives. They began talking more frequently after meeting up a couple days after the birthday party and about three months later decided to take a trip together with some close friends and family. After celebrating their own birthdays, which both occur in January, they decided to take their friendship to another level and this marked the official start of their new “more-than-just-friends” relationship. After dating for almost 2 years, Jason told Kedra he wanted to take her on a special date. They had her favorite American meal for dinner and then took a stroll around the park where on July 12, 2014, Jason proposed and Kedra accepted. Because their very first getaway was on an island, they decided to go back to the water, this time with their kids and parents. The wedding will take place in Cancun, Mexico, in late June. Keep Calm and Say "I Do" TODAY’S TOP TEN ETIQUETTE TIPS FOR THE ULTIMATE WEDDING DAY ARTICLE RHONDA HUDSON

A

traditional wedding is full of the usual pomp and circumstance. The planning and execution of the “Big Day” can be physically and mentally taxing for both the bride and groom along with their family. There are 2.3 million couples married every year in the United States, which equates to 6,200 weddings per day, according to SoundVision. For every wedding, there are rules (etiquette) of engagement. There are certain cultures and traditions that dictate wedding rituals and customs. However, there are ten etiquette tips that should be followed in order for today’s modern bride and groom, to triumphantly navigate their wedding day and reach their “Happily Ever After.” 1. The Budget: Traditionally, the bride’s family is responsible for expenses of the wedding and the groom’s family is responsible for the license, rehearsal dinner, officiant fee and the honeymoon. However, all expenses and fees are negotiable for both parties. 2. The Invitations: Mail 4 to 8 weeks before the wedding and Save the Dates notices should be sent to out-of-town guests at least 4 to 6 months before the wedding. 3. The Announcements: Designate a family member to mail 1-2 days after the wedding. 4. The Attire: Include what to wear, such as (White Tie, Black Tie, Formal/Semi Formal, Casual etc.) on the invitation in order for guests to be properly prepared. 5. The Guest List: Invite guests that are supportive of both bride and groom. If there are ex’s and family members that are sure to make the “Big Day” a “Big Flop” do not include on the guest list. Ultimately, the day belongs to the happy bride and groom. 6. The Bridesmaids: Be respectful of expenses for small jewelry and overpriced dresses that may not be worn again. Remember, that dresses should be chosen according to body types. 7. The Wedding Gift: It is appropriate to return six of the seven toasters you received as a wedding gift. Announce gift registry via blog, wedding Facebook page or by word of mouth and not on the formal invitation. 8. The Cake: The groom will place his right hand over his bride while she cuts the first slice of cake. The bride and groom will eat a piece of cake together. 9. The Reception: The best man will propose the first toast and bride will be seated at the right of the groom. 10. The Thank You Note: Please send a written “thank you” note to guests instead of a group text or email. Rhonda Hudson is the executive director of The Treasure Box School of Etiquette in Atlanta. Parting Thoughts

What is a Mother? WORDS SALEEMAH JACKSON

D

id you know the word mother first appeared before the 12th century? Over time the word "mother" has evolved and today is defined in so many ways for so many people. "Our first caregiver," "the woman who birthed us," and "the woman who imparted wisdom from childhood to present" are some of the ways we define "mother." For some of us, a mother is the person who stood in the gap for our biological mother and continues to fulfill that role for us. Now that I am a mother of three, I often ponder what “mother” really means. When my first child was 18 months, she naturally became more mobile and exploratory of the world around her. It was challenging for my husband and I to dine in public with her. She pulled silverware, plates, food, napkins, whatever was in reach, while my husband and I played the ultimate game of keep-a-way. One day, upon invitation from my dad, I took Taylor with me to an award's show banquet luncheon. It was a grand affair, held at the Ritz-Carlton in a ballroom decorated from end to end with chandeliers, organza and linen tablecloths and linen napkins. There amongst the celebrities and the Who's Who of Atlanta, I walk in with Taylor, the only baby in attendance, followed by a concierge, pushing her stroller. As the lunch progressed, and Taylor became more comfortable with her surroundings, she decided to talk loudly to the people at our table, blithely unaware that a program was in progress. I panicked and made a dash for the door, hoping that a walk around the foyer would lull my little one to sleep. When that didn't work, I tried nursing her in the ladies' lounge, hoping that breast milk would be the tranquilizer needed. But the candles, hand towels and delicately arranged soaps were too tempting for Little Miss Taylor, who quickly stopped nursing and made a grab for the aforementioned objects. So, I went back into the dining room, unsure as

to what my next move would be. I contemplated leaving. But, I had an epiphany, standing there at the back of the room while I watched everyone enjoying their lunch and the program. How else would Taylor know how to behave in public if I didn't show her? So with my best smile and a new-found confidence, I marched back to my table and sat Taylor on my lap. The others at our table were happy for her return. Later, my dad said, “She brightened the room.” And, Taylor was happy to see them, smiling and cooing in response. Inwardly, I smiled. When the waiter placed my steaming plate of grilled Petaluma chicken breast and whipped potatoes au jus directly in front of me, I promptly pushed it beyond Taylor's reach. I took a bib and travel spoon out of her diaper bag and helped my daughter to her first formal luncheon. I draped the linen napkin over her lap, cut the chicken into bite size pieces and Taylor ate to her heart's content. She was proud of herself as she tried to feed herself mashed potatoes with her spoon. Although she picked up the chicken bits and veggies with her fingers (table etiquette will come later), and had mashed potatoes around her mouth, I am glad that I stayed. I learned a valuable lesson that day. Being a mother has taught me how priceless embarrassing moments can be because that’s the essence of the beauty of motherhood. It’s the in the gap moments; the inconvenience of a potty accident when you’re on the way to work, the screaming toddler on the plane, and the one year old redecorating a ballroom, that make you a mother. Mothering is how you interact with those in your charge and cannot be restrained by the continuum of time or space. Each day, each moment that is spent as a mom is the moment that you are meant to be where you are and doing what you are doing. Be encouraged, Mother, and keep mothering on this Mother’s Day and every other day of the year. Saleemah Jackson is a stay-at-home mother of three and an independent filmmaker. She is the writer and director of the upcoming film “Homecoming,” and the author of the forthcoming parenting guide titled, “How Far Is The Nearest Subway?”
