Elevating the Charlotte Brand H i there, readers!
As always, it's great to be able to share the images and experiences we're capturing right here in South Charlotte. We are particulalry excited about this issue, "Elevate," as we have the privilege of featuring some of the most inspiring local entrepreneurs, artists, and philanthropers in our area who are really putting their stamp of quality on everything Charlotte. We've noticed from working with the expert craftsmen at Morrison Smith Fine and Custom Jewelers and individuals like Zack Gudzan - a local entrepreneur branding the Queen City and giving back to it through his new clothing line, CLTivate - that Charlotte is even more special than we thought. Every time we seek to discover another story around the corner, we find that not only is our city packed to the brim with content, but that an elevated lifestyle seems to be the common thread among our residents and businesses. Be sure to check out the work of local artist, Andy Rocco, who is quickly blowing our minds with his unique and striking images that capture Charlotte so electrically and reminds us of all of the color our city brings to us! While you're at it, check out our "Hops and Vine" section for an inside look at the first few weeks of the 8.2.0 experience, brought to us by our friends at VBGB and the AvidXchange Music Factory. We are so proud to be a part of this great city, and we thank you, truly, for all you do to add to the life and diversity of our area. We always welcome your feedback and can't wait to see what you have in store for us as the holiday season approaches.

obody will ever deny that there has always been something special about Charlotte, North Carolina. Lately, however, with all of the growth and development that we have been experiencing, that fact seems to be especially true. Our city is thriving like never before, and like any large metro, the people who live here are what make Charlotte so extraordinary. One of those shining stars is an up-and-coming artist by the name of Andy Rocco, whose distinctive style is adding a very welcome splash of color to our local culture. If you ask Andy, he will tell you that his success is largely thanks to happenstance and being in the right place at the right time. In fact, when you speak to him, his modest personality and friendly disposition are among the first things you notice about him. However, we are here to tell you that Andy’s rising popularity has nothing to do with luck and everything to do with that rare, special blend of talent and determination. Andy’s unique approach is another quality of his work that continues to attract the attention of art enthusiasts. His subjects are iconic and easy to recognize, which extends his reach beyond the art community and into pop culture fandom. His pieces feature bold imagery and vibrant block colors presented in edgy, exciting compositions that are well-suited for just about any space you can think of. More recently, he has begun to create mixed media compositions which feature paint in bright, contrasting colors set against printed black and white photography. These pieces have been particularly popular this season and have sold just about as quickly as he has been able to produce them. Andy Rocco’s appearance around our city is becoming more frequent, as local shops, galleries, and event producers have begun to feature his work regularly. In July, Andy was included in the Charlotte Artists’ Showcase, hosted by Sugar Creek Brewery to benefit the Levine Children’s Hospital. You may also have seen his paintings in the NoDa Company Store, but if you missed it, you shouldn’t worry. His work will be featured this fall at Wooden Robot Brewery in South End, and there is no doubt that you will have many more exciting opportunities to view and purchase a painting of your own as we move ahead into the new year. Of course, for those of you who have a particular concept in mind or simply prefer not to wait, a custom painting may be commissioned by contacting him directly via email at andrewrocco@gmail.com or through direct message to @andy_rocco on Instagram.

hat do you call a night out that includes craft cocktails on draft, arcade games, and an upscale karaoke lounge? Before August of this year, we would have called that concept hectic. After all, nobody wants to spend their Saturday night hopping from one establishment to the next. Fortunately, the need for barhopping seems to have become a thing of the past, and the owners of another favorite Charlotte hangout, VBGB, are leading the way. So, if you find that you’ve grown tired of the same old scene, allow us to introduce you to 8.2.0, the Queen City’s newest, hottest spot for adult fun. From the moment you walk through the door of 8.2.0, you know you are in an entirely different kind of atmosphere. The creative juxtaposition of concrete floors and luxury lighting is the perfect complement to the eclectic crowd you’ll find there. Whether you’re looking for casual, low-key entertainment, a reason to wear your weekend best, or something in between, 8.2.0 has you covered. Our

advice is to start with one of the two main bars, both of which are literally stocked to the ceiling and graced with a vibrant, welcoming staff that you will absolutely love talking to. Order a signature Boba cocktail, and see where your evening takes you. Perhaps it will take you for a walk down memory lane, when congregating with your buddies at the local arcade was the only entertainment that mattered. Classic arcade lovers, rejoice. Pac Man and ski ball can now be enjoyed with a craft cocktail in hand. Bring your competitive spirit, but don’t wear it out in the 8.2.0 arcade. Be sure to save a bit of that tenacity for when you battle it out with your friends, rock star style, in the karaoke lounge. As you make your way to the lounge, you’ll notice a stark contrast between the vibe in this room and that of the arcade. That’s the point. The owners of 8.2.0 want to help you make the most of your time away from work and the hustle of your daily routine. In our opinion, making you feel like a celebrity is definitely a step
820 Hamilton St Charlotte, NC 28206 (980) 256-4646 in the right direction. You will love how it feels to walk onto the stage (complete with lighting, props and backup singers if you need them) to belt out your favorite tune. If you prefer to spectate, you can rent one of the lavish elevated booths that are available and never have to worry about finding comfortable seating. In either case, the VIP experience that you will find in the 8.2.0 karaoke lounge isn’t something you’ll find in other karaoke joints around Charlotte. You can say the same for the soundproofing in 8.2.0, which is truly exceptional. If listening to amateur vocalists is not your style, don’t fret. You won’t hear a single note from outside of the karaoke room’s glass walls. And if you really want to get away, find The Library that has a secret entrance and feels like a speakeasy inside. The menu is as fun as the atmosphere, from cauliflower crust personal pizza and large slices of NY Style pie (Try the Gigi) to pomme frittes with 20+ different dipping sauces and gourmet meatballs served in a cone. There’s even a walk up pizza window! The event space, three different rooms (Paris, New York and Lounge) totaling 4000 square feet will surely be in demand this season with no rental fee but food and beverage minimums. here is so much that can be said about finding the perfect piece of jewelry. It’s easy to understand the concept of value when you’re referring to diamonds, precious metals, and gemstones, but the value of jewelry runs so much deeper than that. The perfect piece of jewelry is something that its owner will wear for a lifetime; it has a story, nostalgia, and a purpose. So, when you have a reason to purchase something that tells the tale of a special moment in your life, you should do so with the confidence of knowing that the jewelry you have chosen is an adequate representation of the sentimental value it carries. At Morrison Smith Fine & Custom Jewelers, this is the driving philosophy, and value is measured on a much more personalized scale. Here, you will find
the largest collective of jewelry artisans in Charlotte, representing an incredible wealth of talent, creativity, and innovation in the art of jewelry-making. If you have a custom design in mind, this team of six craftsmen will bring your vision to life. If you lack the creativity, you can trust the jewelers at Morrison Smith to design and construct a distinctive piece that you or your loved one will treasure for many years to come. That is always the goal when you make an investment in jewelry. You hope that it will see decades or centuries of wear and that it will be a source of pride for its owner. While this is most often the case, there are also instances when a piece is no longer serving its purpose or complimenting the wearer’s personal tastes. As your life evolves, so should the items that mean
most to you. Morrison Smith Jewelers will transform these antiquities into beautiful, modern pieces that will once again be worn with pride and adoration. The unattractive heirloom that you have kept locked away can be reimagined into whatever your heart desires. Your bridal set from decades ago can be upgraded or redesigned with your present day lifestyle in mind. In either case, you will always know that your valuables are in the most capable hands in the Queen City. Whether it is a fresh design or an item that is being repurposed, you’ll never have to worry about the safety of your pieces during shipment or who is actually handling your jewelry. All of the work that is performed by Morrison Smith Jewelers occurs on site. That is, of CONTINUED >

assion lingers in Zack Gudzan's eyes as he explains the plans he has for CLTivate. CLTivate is a local non-profit apparel company, which uses its earnings to donate to several causes including addiction and homeless outreach and human trafficking. Through their sales of Charlotte-themed t-shirts and tank tops, the non-profit lets consumers have a direct hand in providing resources to people in need. For every item sold, CLTivate donates an identical item and profits to a certain cause. CLTivate was conceptualized at the end of July this year when Gudzan wanted to start a for-profit clothing company. After a week of launching, Gudzan had a change of heart. "At first, I just wanted to start clothing brand but my heart wasn’t in it. My faith is big part of who I am and encourages me to give back,” says Gudzan. Gudzan launched CLTivate so he could raise money and awareness for a variety of charities that had on-theground resources to put donations to use in a meaningful and “cool” way. Once a charity is identified, Gudzan creates a design to go onto t-shirts, tank tops, hats and socks. For example, clothing designed for a recent sale is supported addiction outreach. Through donation and assistance, the organization provided entertainment, education, food, faith and friends for those in recovery.
“Like most nonprofit organizations, we are always looking for new ways to promote our brand” Regarding addiction, Gudzan has been there. He has been sober for two years and wants to help others get on the right path. “Addiction is a big part of my story. Now that I am on the other side, I think I can use my experiences to help other people. Hopefully through CLTivate, we can offer some hope to people who just need a chance to start over,” says Gudzan. CLTivate has already partnered with two local non-profits— Running Works and Purple Stride Charlotte. Partnering with these two organizations has played a big part in spreading the word about the newly launched brand. "Like most nonprofit organizations, we are always looking for new ways to get promote our brand," explains Gudzan.
The organization’s efforts are promoted via CLTivate's social media outlets especially Instagram. CLTivate’s “social street team” uses social media including Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat to promote the brand and cultivate Charlotte through outreach. “Social media is going to be my biggest driving force because I want the brand to appeal to millennials,” Gudzan says. Gudzan has big plans for the organization over the next year including pop-up shops and community events. If you are interested in getting involved with CLTivate, visit their website at CLTivate.com for more information.

FALL FOR COMFORT (FOOD) F
all is the time of year when everyone slows down to take a breath. An hour of time is given back to use as one pleases. The sun sets sooner bringing in the relaxation that comes with evening time. Soon it will be time for comfy sweaters and socks, which almost always leads to kicking back with a favorite comfort food. Comfort foods are mesmerizing in that they often soothe the palate and the soul. They fall into many categories of sweet and savory. Ranging from custard pies to beef stews. People enjoy comfort foods because they not only taste good but they offer them opportunity to reflect on memories responsible for making the particular food significant in the first place. There is nothing like racing home from school in the fall when there is just enough chilly air to make you want hot cocoa and banana bread, or chili and cornbread with Monday night football. Everyone loves a great casserole, my favorite of all time is macaroni and cheese - the ultimate comfort food - the great stand alone. Macaroni and cheese can be made traditionally or it can be transformed by adding other ingredients and flavors such as chicken breast, bleu cheese, and hot sauce to make buffalo macaroni and cheese. can be added to make southwest macaroni and cheese. No matter what extras are added, the comfort of macaroni and cheese is happiness on a plate. Traditionally macaroni and cheese is prepared with a variety of cheeses, milk, butter, and a roux. However, it is not necessary to use a roux to make a sauce for macaroni and cheese. Adding warm milk to warm pasta and cheese will naturally create a velvety sauce. It is ok to skip the roux and make this favorite comfort food all about the cheese, enjoy.
