Hello SCLS Readers!
George Zorrilla | George.Zorrilla@LifestylePubs.com
Hard to believe this is the 6th Issue of South Charlotte Lifestyle. Time is flying faster than ever. I recently retired from 33 years in Corporate America. Over those 33 years, I specialized in sales and marketing. While I am grateful for many aspects of my career and the benefits afforded me, I am most appreciative of the countless number of friends I made along the way. I started this publication to keep busy after retirement. Little did I know that my new focus would entail so much effort. The decision to start this community publication came with a commitment to “Paying it Forward” wherever I could. To do this myself and our editorial team have begun to seek out opportunities for adding value to our philanthropic community, starting with small moves, such as providing pro-bono exposure to a different, local non-profit in each issue.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE LIFESTYLE PARTNERS WITH UBACK TO MAKE LOCAL CHARITIES MORE ACCESSIBLE TO READERS Charlotte’s charity scene is getting a boost from mobile technology, thanks to uBack. Thanks to readers like you, you can bring new money to the fight, so that research and resources can be deployed to our community to make progress to solve the cruel mystery of Lupus and end its devastating impact.

ost visitors to Africa are drawn to the continent by the same thing…the lure of the animals and a chance to track the Big Five and other creatures in their natural habitats. It is an amazing and life-changing experience to view these animals up close. A new appreciation for species we thought we knew develops during safari drives and the most knowledgable animal lovers among us are changed forever. And while these quintessential opportunities to view extraordinary wildlife is the most popular reason to visit Africa…there are many more marvelous ways to enjoy your visit. A vacation to the world’s second largest continent can be filled with sunny beaches, history and culture, wineries and adventure….as wide a variety of breathtaking experiences as the continent is large. Southern Africa boasts a temperate climate and can be visited year round. It is here you can see the majestic Victoria Falls, go on a water safari in Botswana, explore the

wine country and have a cosmopolitan and culturally rich experience in Cape Town. Adrenaline junkies and explorers can hike Table Mountain, scuba dive, white water raft and even dive with the Great White Sharks. In contrast, it is in the stunning vistas of East Africa that you can experience The Great Migration of wildebeest. These vast expanses in Kenya and Tanzania are very different, but equally as awe-inspiring as the spectacular natural beauty in the south. Many travelers are intimidated by the idea of an African vacation…but it does not have to be as expensive or difficult to plan as many fear. Mann Travels Africa experts can help with typical questions such as What time of year to travel? Where is the best place to go on Safari? What should I bring? Where should I stay? Almost every travel taste and preference can be satisfied in Africa –and while the animals are the main draw, most visitors say it is the people and the wondrous scenery that makes them want to return again and again.

Outdoor activities are all family-friendly and include a bocce ball and croquet court, putting green, fishing ponds, hiking trails and a 25-acre riverpark. anting to add a WOW factor to your interior design project? These gems are definitely worth a double take. I discovered these Wall Flats at inhabitliving.com a couple years
ago and was waiting for just the right spot to install. Wall Flats are lightweight 3-D wall panels that work together with a large scale pattern repeat. They are 100% bio-degradable, molded of 100% Bagasse which is the dry pulpy residue left after the extraction of juice from sugar cane, making it one of the world’s most renewable resources. Last year, my husband and I took the plunge and hung them in both the powder room and on a recessed wall in the dining room. Now, when we have guests come to our home, it’s only a matter of minutes before they are drawn to these feature walls, examining, touching and asking all sorts of questions about the Wall Flats. They bring a bold, yet sophisticated, positive energy to any space. Wall Flats can be installed on walls as a DIY project or through a contractor, hanging them with either contact cement or a clay-based wallpaper paste. They can be trimmed and are paintable, which opens the door for more creativity. They look stunning, encompassing an entire room or making only one wall an architectural masterpiece. 3-D Wall Flats also make great statement pieces for such places as a fireplace, ceiling, built-ins, pillars, framed in as a wall art piece, and even to hide damaged drywall. Inhabitliving.com offers eleven different styles of Wall Flats, starting at $2.66 per square foot. Visit their website for more ideas and installation instructions. So, whether your style is modern, mid-century, contemporary, retro or architec-
tural, you can’t go wrong with this next generation wall art. As a precautionary statement, once the install is complete, these beauties will steal the show!

ou'll often see author and travel expert Tamela Rich on the morning news shows. She merrily chats with her hosts about the varieties of cornbread she sampled at the National Cornbread Festival in Tennessee, recommends car games to parents that will help them keep their kids occupied on long road trips, and gives two thumbs up to women thinking of traveling the country as she does—solo. Unknown is her backstory: how a failed business brought her to a moment of truth at the medicine cabinet, and how learning to ride her black BMW motorcycle from coast to coast gave her a new lease on life.
24
South Charlotte Lifestyle | September 2016
Rich got her passion for road tripping as a child. Every summer her family would travel from Ohio to California. Some of her favorite childhood memories took place in her parents’ Vista Cruiser station wagon. After her business failed, she wanted to begin traveling again to regain her sense of self. Three months after getting her license, Rich took her first motorcycle trip to Oregon where she visited 19 states, traveled over 7,200 miles and learned many lessons about life. She has been traveling three times each year on her bike ever since. Rich uses her story and “lessons from the road” to inspire and motivate people through speaking engagements, books and blog posts. She is in the

process of finishing her second book titled, “Steady On: Staying Centered in the Face of Fear.” It is expected to release in the first quarter of 2017. The book is about fear and inspired by the question she is always asked, “Are you afraid?” She isn’t. She has made some of her favorite memories on the road by taking risks and meeting new people like the Conga Riders in Wyoming who were raising money for breast cancer and the Zoo Keeper from Buffalo who was going blind. Rich’s motto for traveling is to “Pack Light. Travel Slow. Connect Deep.” “Traveling has taught me that more isn't better, fast shouldn't be an unquestioned objective, and that superficiality is best left to social media,” says Rich. Her passion for traveling is unmatched and she encourages everyone to travel. “Just start going somewhere. Don’t wait until you have the time and money. Traveling doesn’t have to be time consuming or expensive,” says Rich. Her next stop is Italy where she will be joining other female motorcycle riders on a 9-day excursion.

Stepping Out to Wing Haven Gardens A LOCAL CHARLOTTE SANCTUARY FOR BOTH BIRDS AND PEOPLE, INSPIRING PASSION FOR OUR NATURAL SURROUNDINGS.
ARTICLE MARISSA KASAROV | PHOTOGRAPHY JEFF CRAVOTTA
T
hroughout Charlotte, you’ll find all manner of hidden gems and special local “secrets” that embody the uniquely southern spirit of the Queen City. Wing Haven happens to be one of them. Located right in the heart of Charlotte, this world-renowned historic site invites travelers and natives alike to experience a natural oasis set among the bustling cityscape that we love to call home. Wing Haven is comprised of two gardens spread across four acres. The first, Clarkson House and Gardens, offers refuge to over 120 bird species. Its grounds are rich with Southern horticulture, and its namesake, Elizabeth Clarkson, was a widely published author and bird enthusiast. According to the Wing Haven website, in an article published in Audubon in 1945, Mrs. Clarkson wrote, “… from that moment when I suddenly became interested in birds, each addition was weighed also from the ‘bird’s point of view,’ and bird baths, feeding stations, suet baskets, and hummingbird feeders became garden necessities.” The Elizabeth Lawrence House and Garden is the second Wing Haven property and is located just steps away from the Clarkson House. Ms. Lawrence was already very well-established as a supremely talented garden designer and author when she came to Charlotte, and this property became known as her living laboratory. For thirty-five years, this garden was the subject of her very prolific writing, creating an intrinsic value that extended far beyond any tangible real estate and continues to live on today. To the absolute delight of many of our local historians, both the house and garden were entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, and in 2008, it was purchased by the Wing Haven Foundation. This sanctuary is such a special part of Charlotte, as evidenced by the many community enrichment programs, camps, 26

and events that it offers to its members and the general public. Topics covered in these initiatives include horticulture, ornithology, health and wellness, and more. The fall season is especially eventful for Wing Haven, so we encourage our fellow Charlotte residents to check out their website for a detailed listing of everything this organization has to offer. There is no question that Wing Haven’s programs are an asset to our community. Their Preschool Environmental Education Program, for example, is an outreach initiative designed to benefit at-risk preschool-aged children. You simply can’t put a price on the benefits of something like that, but the operating costs are significant. Volunteers offset that cost, and in exchange, are given an experience they simply wouldn’t find anywhere else. Otherwise, the foundation is supported by private donations, membership dues, proceeds from special events, and venue rentals. For over 35 years, a fundraising mainstay for Wing Haven has been its biannual plant sales, which occur in the spring and fall. These events are a treasured resource for both seasoned and novice gardeners, and because 100% of the proceeds benefit Wing Haven, shoppers can feel good about how their money is being spent. The next sale is open to members only on October 5th and open to the general public on October 6th through 8th. For more information, visit WingHavenGardens.org or call 704.331.0664.

T
he best thing about summer is the food that comes into season with it. Everyone looks forward to fresh garden tomatoes, strawberries, peaches and watermelons. And guess what? It’s not too late to enjoy those end of summer perks! Nothing compares to enjoying a great summer meal at the end of the day while watching the sunset. The pleasure of fresh summer fruit for breakfast in the morning can be as equally comforting as a great salad at dinner. With summer comes the desire to eat lighter and healthier to feel just as vibrant as the local produce in season. This time of year it’s common to try new adventures like kayaking, mountain climbing, skydiving, or going on a cruise. Go ahead and try new and exciting recipes that may not include traditional ingredients - Nothing wrong with getting adventurous with breakfast, lunch, or dinner! Adding fresh fruit like pineapple or blackberries to a simple syrup makes for a great fruit spread atop toast or an English muffin. The best ratio is 2 oz. of simple syrup to 1 34

cilantro, toss the salad in the vinaigrette. • Add the warm veggies to the top of the salad, top with shaved parmesan and
cup of fresh fruit. You can adjust as needed depending on the density of the fruit. Bacon and fresh fruit also form a great pair: Try 2-3 slices of bacon with fresh watermelon or cantaloupe for the satisfying pleasure of a sweet and salty taste and cold and hot effect. These different sensations are wonderful to the palate and a great way to start your morning. At dinner consider different greens, such as arugula, kale or even collard greens, for the base of a salad. For the more adventurous foodie, raw collards are great, or they can be blanched and shocked for a more tender bite. Adding fresh zucchini or squash, bell peppers, and/or asparagus to these greens will make the end of this hot summer season an adventurous one. Remember the change of seasons brings new excitement year after year, so why not make enjoying new foods in new ways a part of the adventure? Explore the endless possibilities and fresh opportunities that come with each season. Enjoy! Chef Tay Love People, Love Food.
