LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Anniversary Issue! Since our first South Vegas City Lifestyle magazine hit mailboxes one year ago, we’ve found great joy in bringing localized content to your home. We are proud of our first milestone issue and anticipate many more to come! Coincidence or not, this month’s theme is Explore, and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing over the past 12 months. I am in a very unique position of getting to meet hundreds of our local residents —learning about them, their businesses, and their community involvement — all with the goal of providing exposure for the blood, sweat, and tears this city is built on. Most of us live in an efficiency and productivity-focused environment, leaving little time to get out and about, see the city, and take in everything Las Vegas has to offer. Before taking on this incredible opportunity, I was in a similar boat — wake up early to try and get a workout in, hit the 9-5, family, kids, and errands on the nights and weekends — not much outside of that routine. While our focus is on the residents and businesses right here in the southwest part of town, I’m blessed to be able to turn this not-so-9-to-5 into something that allows me to explore new restaurants, meet new businesses, and truly understand their passion for building something great, which sure beats talking about Google clicks. This month, I challenge you to explore something new — a restaurant, a trip, a fitness class, or whatever intrigues you. When you do, tag us @southvegascitylifestyle and let us know what we’re missing and where our next features should come from. Cheers,

ATTAIN ENERGY INDEPENDENCE WITH SOLAR PANELS

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SUNPOWER
IS SOLAR ENERGY RIGHT FOR ME?
H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E SE RVI CE S
When you live in a region with nearly 300 days of sunshine a year, the answer is probably “yes.” Solar installations are most effective and productive in the climate we enjoy here in Southern Nevada, and that’s why there are nearly 40,000 solar installations across the state. Furthermore, when you install a SunPower by Today’s Energy Store home solar system, you can lower your monthly energy bill by investing in green energy. The Solar Energy Industries Association states that Nevada is in the top three of all 50 states for solar power installations. For years the annual growth rate was nearly 50 percent. Since 2010, solar energy prices have dropped by more than 70 percent, so customers can save tens of thousands of dollars as growth levels remain steady and are predicted to remain so. SunPower’s panels manufactured with Maxeon solar cells produce more energy over a 25-year period than conventional panels. They are aesthetically pleasing with sleek, modern designs that mesh well with any architectural
roofing style, engineered for durability to survive decades of rain, snow, wind, or hail. From a global perspective, a move to renewable energy will help reduce atmospheric carbon emissions, staving off global warming. Installing solar panels is one of the best ways a homeowner can reduce or even eliminate their monthly energy bill while being more environmentally friendly. Panels can be added without extensive system reconfigurations because the system is so straightforward. The ideal roof faces south or west and has a pitch of about 30 degrees, but roofs that don’t meet these specifications can still produce large amounts of solar energy. Today’s solar panels generate power through a photovoltaic effect, which means “light into electricity.” A solar panel is made up of a number of these cells that harness energy. When sunlight hits the panel, the semiconductor knocks electrons loose, generating an electric current that is fed into a home’s power supply or stored in a battery for later use. It produces more energy at sunrise, sunset, and on cloudy days. It can even be redirected into the electricity grid. Solar energy delivers a range of benefits on multiple levels. SunPower’s leasing program offers solar energy for as little as $.08 per kWh, a savings of up to 30 percent over utility-provided electricity. And the lease lets customers lock in their rate at a fixed monthly rate. Because harnessing energy from the sun is basically free, customers can see reductions in their monthly bills right away and may also see tax credits and rebates to offset some of the initial costs of installation. Solar panels can also increase a home’s resale value by protecting the
roof from harsh weather conditions and saving future homeowners the installation cost. In addition to installing the No. 1 ranked solar panels on your roof, SunPower offers Tesla’s Powerwall rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which charges throughout the day to power your home in the evening and into the night. As a SunPower Master Dealer, they are a locally owned business that has been serving Henderson and Las Vegas since 2008. And they have over 750 industry patents, more than any other solar manufacturer to date. Their professional team assists throughout the entire transition to solar process, first with an energy audit and a quote to install, then with maintenance and customer support with a commitment to moving homeowners toward a greener, smarter, and more efficient life. Customer care is one of SunPower’s central focuses. Responsiveness, respect, clarity, and accessibility are just a few of the characteristics they aim to exhibit in every project. A better warranty starts with a better product. Every part of a SunPower Equinox System is precisely designed to work perfectly

together and is thoroughly tested for longterm reliability. It’s the only solar warranty to cover your whole system [not just the panels] and ensures product quality and the highest power production in the industry. The SunPower Complete Confidence warranty is the best warranty you may never have to use. If you reside in or around Clark County or Nye County and want to join the many Nevada homeowners who have decided to switch to solar. “Call or drop in any time with questions or concerns,” says Marc Hale, President & Chief Executive Officer. “Our local sales and installation teams are here to help, and we can provide a free quote to get you started on your way to energy independence.”

Exploring a
CENTURY-OLD CLASSIC Western Bar
If you haven’t discovered it yet, add it to your must-see list. A Nevada historical landmark, the Pioneer Saloon was established in 1913. The taste and feel of this piece of classic western history can be found in the town of Goodsprings, Nevada, a former mining town just south of Las Vegas. Featured in movies, music videos, television shows, and even video games, the saloon attracts locals, tourists, motorcyclists, and adventurers. And with food, drinks, live music, and more than a hundred years of stories and characters, this is the perfect place to explore. So, strap on your chaps and spurs and head to the Pioneer Saloon. Stephen “Old Man Liver” Staats Owner, Pioneer Saloon Stephen Staats is a musician and serial entrepreneur. He acquired the nickname “Old Man Liver” after several product releases under the same brand name that features his own likeness, including alcohol (Old Man Liver American Whiskey), hot sauce (Old Man Liver’s Yummy As F**k Sauce), a book (What My Dad Taught Me), and seasoning mix (Old Man Liver’s Red Menace).
TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY OF PIONEER SALOON. The Pioneer Saloon was built by George Fayle in 1913 using a prefabricated kit that includes the exterior and interior walls and ceilings made of stamped tin that can still be found in the Saloon to CONTINUED >

this day. The business survived the prohibition, multiple recessions, two world wars, and two pandemics (Spanish Flu and Covid-19). The cherry wood bar inside the Saloon was built by Brunswick in Maine in the late 1800s. It was shipped around South America since there was no Panama Canal back then and eventually made its way to Goodsprings via San Francisco, California, and Rhyolite, Nevada.
DESCRIBE WHAT SOMEONE WILL EXPERIENCE WHEN THEY ARRIVE. After taking the Jean exit off the 15 freeway and driving the rural highway, one might feel like they were tricked into driving out to nothing in the middle of nowhere. But only five minutes in, after passing a hill into the small town of Goodsprings, population 200, the Pioneer Saloon appears out of nowhere, and one feels transformed back into the wild west days. The Saloon looks like it’s straight out of a western movie, and the surrounding lot is still dirt, seemingly untouched by urban landscaping and modern construction. One can park in the back unless you have a horse or motorcycle … in this case, you are entitled to park in the front “hogs & horses parking only” area. Once entering the property, you may notice an eclectic mix of people — bikers, families, businesspeople, artists, etc. Still, everyone is there for the purpose of enjoying each other’s company and the magic of the property. The smell of bacon and grilling permeates the air as one walks the outdoor seating area near the Saloon’s famous outdoor grilling deck. Once inside the Saloon itself, one can experience history as the original cash register still lines the wall along with several antiques from the era. In the dining room, you can read about the tragic accident that took the life of the famous actress Carole Lombard in 1942. She died in a plane crash at nearby Mt. Potosi. Her Husband, Clark Gable, had come to Goodsprings to await word of her fate. Because of the remoteness of the crash site, it took rescuers several days to reach the site and determine the fate of everyone on board. A piece of the plane is displayed on one of the walls in the dining room.
WHAT IS THIS WE HEAR ABOUT BULLET HOLES? Many people believe the three bullet holes near the western-facing door of the Saloon were from a poker game in 1915 where a patron was shot and killed. The patron was a belligerent, out-of-work minor named Paul Coski, and the person who caught him cheating and shot him was the dealer, Joe Armstrong. We have the newspaper headline and coroner’s report on display at the Saloon. It is the Saloon’s only confirmed murder on the premises and thus a topic of focus with paranormal investigations and paranormal-themed TV shows, like Ghost Adventures. CONTINUED >

WHO ARE SOME OF THE FAMOUS PEOPLE WHO HAVE WALKED THROUGH THE SALOON’S DOORS? Chris Angel, Johnny Depp, Randy Couture, Rick Harrison, Jamie Kennedy, Cheech Marin & Tommy Chong, Clark Gable, Oscar Goodman
WE HEAR YOU MAKE YOUR OWN WHISKEY. IS IT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART? I started making my own Whiskey a couple of years ago. I call it Old Man Liver American Whiskey. I wanted something that was okay, smoky, and a little spicy. I also wanted it stronger — 90 proof — so I could brag that it’s stronger than Jim Beam or Jack Daniels but still smooth going down and tasty to sip.
WHAT VIDEO GAME WAS PIONEER SALOON FEATURED IN? Fallout: New Vegas is a popular action, role-playing video game that takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting in the Las Vegas area. The Pioneer Saloon, nearby Goodsprings General Store, and the town of Goodsprings, are featured. They even based some of the game’s characters on our employees. So, gamers walk in, see our maintenance director, Gordi, and yell, “Easy Pete!” Even our dear friend who performs and books our bands at the Pioneer, Monica, is also the head of the Goodsprings’ County Advisory Council, the closest thing to a mayor in Goodsprings. Ironically, with life imitating art, the character, “Trudy the Bartender,” was based on her and was also the town mayor in the game.
WHAT FINAL THOUGHTS WOULD YOU LIKE OUR READERS TO KNOW? For breakfast items and our Hangover burger that includes a fried egg, we now give customers the option to upgrade to fresh, farm-to-table, organic eggs from local, pasture-raised chickens for $2 more. I own a mini farm down the street from the Saloon, and we got approval to carry the eggs at the Pioneer. So, my ten spoiled hens have been working hard to provide these tasty eggs with rich yolks. Our rooster, Picasso, takes care of the hens. [Laughs] I figure it doesn’t get any more fresh than from down the street, and this is something unique to our rural setting. Outdoor seating is available for all ages and is dog friendly. However, inside the Saloon, it is 21 and over only. The Pioneer Saloon is open at 9:00 a.m., seven days a week. Eat Your Way
A round the Globe Exploring culture through food ARTICLE BY SAVANNAH WOODS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS FULCHER
Food has always been at the forefront of humanity; after all, we need it to survive. But as people and trade developed, food has become so much more than survival. It has become an art in itself. Some areas hold onto tradition and nostalgia while incorporating new ideas and other cultural influences. If one truly wishes to experience the culture, there’s no better way to dive right in than over a meal.
Allegretto, Paso Robles, California
Tucked into the rolling hills of Paso Robles, California, sits the Allegretto Winery and Resort. A unique hotel curated to showcase art worldwide and give visitors a relaxing, spiritual stay. The Cello Restaurant & Bar is open all day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lunch menu highlights were the Muffuletta sandwich, Tuscan style,
served with sun-dried tomato hummus, pistachio mortadella, salami Toscana, mozzarella cheese, roasted tomatoes, baby arugula, cello olive tapenade, and a house-made ciabatta roll. For dinner, plates of miso-crusted bay salmon served with ginger butter as well as their 8-ounce certified black Angus filet mignon, oak pit grilled, seasonal vegetables, dauphinoise potato, red wine Demi-glaze with a horseradish mascarpone. Ending the night with dessert, a “triple chocolate bomb,” a chocolate soufflé cake, raspberry dark chocolate mousse, framboise scented ganache, toasted almonds, fresh raspberries, and white chocolate curls.
Aruba
Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa, located at Eagle Beach, boasts the biggest private beach on the island. Here, there are four different restaurants on the property, each cultivating unique aspects of Aruba’s culture, encompassed by their famous Aruban hospitality.
Chris Fulcher and Savannah Woods Chris Fulcher and Savannah Woods are travel writers and photographers, having worked all around the world with various hotels in the Americas, Europe, and the Mediterranean. They are based out of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ike’s Bistro
Ike’s Bistro, open for breakfast and dinner, is an open-air location boasting a huge Mediterranean-inspired menu. Menu highlights feature their homemade chia pudding made with coconut milk, chia seeds, agave, homemade granola, and berries, and a variety of smoothie bowls featuring the açaí peanut butter bowl - made with açaí smoothie, freshly sliced banana, granola, seasonal berries, and peanut butter. For dinner, some of our favorite highlights were the Filet Mignon, 6-ounces of beef served with mashed potatoes, vegetables, porcini mushroom sauce, and homemade chimichurri, and the Vegan Steak and Shrimp, which was made out of lentil steak with grilled New Wave shrimp served with potato wedges, steamed broccoli, and sesame-ginger glaze.
The Chophouse
While the atmosphere on Manchebo creates a feel of casual relaxation, for those looking for a more elegant evening, there is The Chophouse. The star of The Chophouse and our favorite server was Harold Rasmijn, who received the Caribbean Employee of the Year Award in 2018. Menu highlights were the lamb chops, marinated with garlic and herbs from Manchebo’s herb garden, and the Almond Grouper - a pan-seared grouper served with potato puree, green beans, and coconut white wine sauce. Harold completes the experience by serving a special dessert of banana foster which he makes table-side for a spectacular end-of-the-night show.

THE ELECTRIC TRUCK WITH A POWERFUL PUNCH FORD F150 LIGHTNING IS SURE TO IMPRESS WHILE YOU ARE OUT EXPLORING
ARTICLE BY KYLA SAWYER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF GAUDIN FORD
34
D R IV E R’S N OT E BOOK | AUTO + MARI NE
Ford is known for their pick-up trucks. They are built for heavy-duty and are notably reliable for towing and packing a punch. And that hasn’t changed with the new F-150 Lightning truck, even though it is completely electric. It is capable of any required heavy lifting and can deliver the same quality of power that gas-run Ford trucks contain. To help you explore the roads, Gaudin Ford's F-150 Lightning truck can tow up to 10,000 pounds while maintaining a smooth and easy-to-drive feel. To help ease the experience of traveling, the smart technology system will guide the driver to wherever they need to go while providing a reference for charge points along the route if a quick energy boost is needed.
With constant access to data from other trucks that have driven or towed along the same route, the F-150 Lightning can compare the energy use, speed, temperature, climate, and other road factors that could affect the route in travel. Adapting to changing environments will help the truck apply more energy or strength, ultimately providing a more efficient experience. The more the truck and the smart system are used, the more it becomes accurate and accustomed to the individual. New to the industry, the “Pro Trailer Hitch Assist” is a feature the F-150 Lightning truck can utilize. This allows for automatic control steering, throttle, and brake inputs making hitching trailers easier for the driver. Those who are looking for an exploration vehicle can check out the F-150 Lightning truck at Gaudin Ford and see how it defies all stereotypes that electric vehicles can’t run as well as gas-powered vehicles. Its efficiency and advanced technologies are constantly growing and adjusting to the outside conditions, and its strength and dynamic systems will assure the driver that this truck will be a reliable asset to anyone on the road.
