Love Local

There’s something extraordinary about the simple joys of community. From the morning bustle at a favorite coffee shop to the warmth of a friendly wave from a neighbor, it’s these small moments that remind us of why we love where we live.

This month, as we lean into the theme of “Love Local,” we’re celebrating the people, businesses, and stories that make our community truly special. Supporting our local community goes beyond trans actions. It’s about connection—the kind of connection that happens when you discover the perfect melody in a song by a rising star, find personalized care that makes you glow inside and out, or savor the skill and artistry of a professional grooming experience. These are the threads that weave our community together, filling this issue with reasons to fall in love with our corner of town all over again.

In this issue, you’ll find inspiration to explore, enjoy, and support the incredible talents and businesses that call this city home. Maybe it’s a chance to discover a new favorite spot (there’s new businesses popping up on every corner it seems) or revisit a cherished local gem. At its core, “Love Local” is about celebrating the many things that bring our neighborhoods to life—cherishing the people and places that make our community unique. Whatever it is, we hope it deepens your connection to the place we’re all proud to call home.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. As you flip through these pages, may you find new ways to connect, support, and love your South Vegas community, and as always, send us a story idea if you have one! Here’s to February—a month for celebrating love in all its forms.

Warm wishes, and happy reading!

Country Rocking

Vegas native Sierra Black shining bright in life and on stage

For Sierra Black, country music has always been a part of life, from the time she was a little girl growing up in Las Vegas. "I am the baby of five in my family and I remember my dad picking up his guitar and singing country music to us every night," said Sierra. "When I was 16, I looked at my parents and told them I wanted to pursue music. It's my passion and what I was born to do."

The 31-year-old singer and songwriter has since made that childhood dream come true. Drawing her inspiration from her favorite artists like Faith Hill and Shania Twain, Sierra began traveling back and forth as a teen between Nashville and Las Vegas, learning everything she could about the country music world.

"Everything about country music just resonated with me," said Sierra. “It's the connection and the meaning behind the words."

In 2017, Sierra wrote and recorded a song titled "Make it Easy" with multi-Grammy-winning producer, Mark Bright who has worked with artists like Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Rascal Flatts. That song went viral on YouTube garnering nearly 7 million views and more than 3 million streams online.

"It's a ballad I wrote with Mark Bright and Chris Stevens,” Sierra recalled. “I love when people send me videos of the song playing at their wedding. It's about love and finding ‘your person’ who just makes life easy."

But like the stories behind many country music songs, life is not always easy, and heartbreaks are inevitable.

"When I got separated and divorced, that really sparked a lot of writing creativity," said Sierra. "I know if my daughters need anything, it's the best version of me, and the best version of me is a singer. So, I dove right back into singing and songwriting and never looked back."

Sierra said while it's not always easy balancing her life as a mom to her girls, now 5 and 3, with her busy career, she feels she's in the place she's meant to be.

"I feel like I am in my prime. It's amazing," said Sierra. "I am not sure if it's being a mom or getting a little older, but I am truly in the best phase of my life."

The road ahead for this talented singer-songwriter is now looking brighter than ever. Last year was a special year for her from scoring a residency at Ole' Red Las Vegas to performing before a record crowd of more than 60,000 football fans at Allegiant Stadium. Sierra also recently released her latest single, “Green Lights,” with more on the horizon.

When asked about the secret to her success, Sierra said it all comes down to knowing who you are and writing your own story and, in her case, also her own music.

"Everyone wants to put you in their mold or box and tell you what they think you should be," said Sierra. “That’s never going to work. No one else will believe that. Be authentic and true to yourself. That’s what will bring you success."

"I know if my daughters need anything, it's the best version of me, and the best version of me is a singer."

Local experts share insights for skin health and confidence

Love Your Skin, Love Yourself

Your skin is more than just your body's largest organ—it's your shield, your first livne of defense, and your most visible feature. Taking care of it is not only about maintaining appearances, but also about promoting overall health and well-being. When you nurture your skin, you're embracing self-love and investing in a healthier future.

Skin is unique to every individual, telling stories of your journey through life. Your skin deserves care and attention at every stage, from shielding you from harmful elements to highlighting the glow of good health. Loving your skin is about more than beauty; it’s about recognizing its essential role in your overall health and making choices that support its longevity and vitality.

Seek Expert Guidance for Radiant Skin

For those looking to enhance their skin health, expert advice can make all the difference. Dr. Brooke Corbett, Dr. Devina Mehta, and Dr. Yssra Soliman at Thomas Dermatology (www.thomasderm. com) bring years of experience and expertise to the Las Vegas-based practice. These board-certified dermatologists emphasize that proactive care is the cornerstone of healthy, radiant skin.

Prevention Is Key

Dr. Corbett highlights the importance of preventative skin care for long-term health. “Preventative measures, like using sunscreen and protective clothing, significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer,” she shares. “Daily habits, such as applying antioxidant serums and SPF, can also help combat premature aging and oxidative stress, preserving skin's youthful appearance.”

Dr. Mehta echoes this sentiment, adding, “The regular use of sunscreen and moisturizer not only prevents sun damage, but also helps maintain a healthy skin barrier. This can stave off conditions like eczema and rashes, which are often exacerbated by dryness.”

Dr. Soliman adds, "Our skin is the largest organ in the human body and a vital contributor to overall health. The skin plays several key roles in UV protection, temperature regulation and is a protective shield to the outside world. By practicing safe sun habits, we can greatly reduce the risk of skin cancer. A healthy skin barrier will protect us from infections and environmental hazards. It can also help prevent flares of chronic inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis."

Adapting Your Routine to Your Life Stage

Skin care isn’t one-size-fits-all; it evolves as you age. Dr. Corbett offers tailored advice for every life stage:

• Babies and Children: “Young skin is sensitive and prone to dryness, especially in arid climates like Las Vegas. Daily moisturizing with a thick cream can help maintain a healthy skin barrier,” she advises.

• Teens: Hormonal changes often lead to acne. “A simple routine of cleansing and moisturizing with SPF can be a game-changer for teens,” she says. “Over-the-counter treatments with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can also help manage mild breakouts.”

• 20s and 30s: This is the prime time to focus on prevention. Dr. Corbett recommends incorporating antioxidant serums and retinol into daily routines. “In-office treatments like microneedling and neuromodulators can also address early signs of aging,” she suggests.

• 40s and Beyond: “Hydration and anti-aging ingredients like hyaluronic acid and peptides become essential,” she explains. “For more advanced concerns, laser treatments, chemical peels, and fillers can rejuvenate and restore the skin.”

Dr. Devina Mehta
Dr. Yssra Soliman
Dr. Brooke Corbett

Dr. Mehta adds that lifestyle choices significantly impact skin health at all stages. “A nutrient-rich diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can enhance your skin’s texture and tone,” she says.

Dr. Soliman emphasizes, "The needs of our skin will change during different phases of our life. Excellent photoprotection with sunscreen and UV protective clothing is recommended for all patients. Moisturizing and maintaining a healthy skin barrier is crucial in dry climates such as Vegas. For those with acne, a dermatologist can create a comprehensive treatment plan. In your twenties and beyond, using vitamin C in the morning and a retinoid at night can help reverse signs of photoaging and improve skin appearance."

Early Detection Saves Lives

Regular skin check-ups are vital for early detection of skin issues, including cancer. “Full skin exams allow us to identify and address potential problems before they escalate,” says Dr. Corbett. “Skin cancer is among the most common cancers, but early detection dramatically improves outcomes.”

Dr. Mehta stresses the importance of vigilance, particularly with melanoma. “Melanoma can be aggressive and life-threatening if not caught early,” she warns. “Routine checks make early intervention possible, often requiring only minor in-office treatments.”

Dr. Soliman concurs, "Regular skin checks with a board-certified dermatologist can lead to prevention and early detection of skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States. Dermatologists can use dermatoscopes to further characterize skin lesions and perform biopsies on suspicious lesions. They also treat common conditions such as acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and vitiligo using evidence-based approaches. Additionally, dermatologists collaborate with other specialists to provide holistic care for patients."

Embrace the Power of Healthy Skin

Your skin does so much for you, from protecting you against environmental aggressors to reflecting your overall health. As Dr. Corbett notes, “The skin acts as a powerful barrier and a window to the body, often revealing signs of systemic diseases.” Dr. Mehta agrees, adding, “Protecting your skin helps you lead a healthier life overall.”

Dr. Soliman concludes, "Our skin is the vessel we live in every single day. It protects us and reflects our overall health. You owe it to yourself to take care of your skin."

When you prioritize your skin, you’re prioritizing yourself. Regular care, tailored routines, and expert guidance can help you achieve not just healthier skin but a more confident, vibrant you. So, take a moment to appreciate your skin, and give it the love and care it deserves—because healthy skin is beautiful skin.

LOCAL SPIRIT REVIVED

Returning home to create welcoming experiences and give back to the community

You can take the man out of Las Vegas, but you cannot take Las Vegas out of the man. Michael Pierotti, Jr. is a testament to that phrase, after having left Las Vegas in 2019 for Scottsdale, only to be drawn back to the city he calls home in the fall of 2024. Besides his French bulldog, Fabric, Pierotti loves nothing

more than creating welcoming, fun experiences for locals, while giving back to the community – and now he’s back with an even stronger ambition to do just that and more.

Originally from Los Alamos, New Mexico, Michael moved to Las Vegas in 1995 to attend the University

of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on a soccer scholarship. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business management and discovered a particular interest in the wine industry, thanks to the hospitality experts and Master Sommeliers he met through UNLV’s hospitality program.

Michael has stepped into various hospitality roles throughout his career, including general manager

restaurants at Town Square to welcome patrons and new guests alike, providing an unrivaled locals’ destination for great food, unique drinks and a dynamic social scene.

Staying true to his love for giving back to the local community, Michael created the restaurant’s Whiskey Charity Flight of the Month initiative, which shines a spotlight on premium spirits,

at Orchard Street Gaming and vice president of operations with Voelkner Productions. He was instrumental in the wide success of two locals’ favorite headliners: stand-up comedian Vinnie Favorito and Mac King, comic magician and one of the longest-running solo acts in the city. During his decade-long tenure with Mac King, Pierotti helped establish philanthropic partnerships and fundraisers benefiting local nonprofit organizations such as Nevada Read, Opportunity Village and Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas.

In 2013, Michael joined the Double Helix Wine & Restaurant Group as managing partner and co-owner. Today, Double Helix Wine & Whiskey Lounge is one of the longest-standing

while giving back a portion of proceeds to local charities. Benefiting organizations have included The Shade Tree, a 24-hour accessible emergency shelter for domestic violence and human trafficking survivors and their children; 22 Warriors Foundation, a veteran-founded nonprofit dedicated to supporting veterans; and Project REAL, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering Nevada’s youth through mentorship programs and meaningful conversations focused on civic engagement and constitutional rights.

Michael is thrilled to be back at his post at Double Helix Wine & Whiskey Lounge and invites the entire 21+ community to stop in for exceptional wine, whiskey, and food.

Building the Perfect Bouquet

Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in many ways. Some people choose to go out for dinner and a movie, others hire a private chef for a romantic meal at home, some buy chocolates and find a fun activity in town, and some couples go out of town for an exciting getaway! One Valentine’s Day staple is giving a bouquet of flowers to someone special. Flowers are the gift that say I love you and can be given to your spouse, children, and mom. As a child, my father always got me roses on Valentine’s Day until I met my husband and he took over the tradition. A bouquet of flowers can say many things as each flower has a different meaning. If you’re wanting to say something special to the ones you love this Valentine’s Day, take a look at our list of three popular flowers, what they mean, and what flowers to pair them with.

Roses

LOVE & ROMANCE

Roses are by far the most popular flower to give on Valentine’s Day. They are beautiful by themselves or you can add Baby’s Breath to enhance the bouquet. These two make a romantic bouquet and are the perfect flowers to give to someone special.

Lilies

PURITY & FERTILITY

Lilies come in a variety of colors and are eye-catching! For a softer looking bouquet, pair your lilies with carnations. These two combined are fun and heartwarming and are a great gift for anyone.

Tulips

PERFECT FOR DEEP LOVE

A bouquet of tulips will brighten any space! Adding some Ranunculus, also known as buttercup, will compliment the tulips wonderfully. These flowers have a refreshing look that will decorate any home beautifully in a crystal vase.
