NIELSEN’S ETHOS, AND HE AND HIS WIFE SARAH STRIVE TO INSTILL THOSE VALUES IN THEIR CHILDREN, EVA GRACE AND BROWN. Hence, it should come as no surprise to anyone who knows him that Chris’ personal philosophy carries over into his professional life as well. Helping people to plan for their future, to prepare for unforeseen occurrences, and to navigate the aftermath of accidents and events is the crux of his company’s business model, so it is only fitting that Chris and his wonderful staff members place a high priority on helping others. Chris’ company has collaborated with other charitable organizations such as The Well of Spring Hill food pantry and Soles 4 Souls in the past. In 2015, his office began a partnership with The Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation, and that relationship is entering its sixth year this holiday season. The Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation is an IRSdesignated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity which was created at the behest of the United States Marine Corps in 1991. Toys for Tots, as it is more commonly known, has been ranked since 2001 as one of the top-rated charities by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, also known as the Philanthropy 400, and according to their most recent figures, 96% of all donations go toward their mission of providing toys, books and other gifts to less fortunate children. The remaining 4% is spent on supporting fundraising expenses, and not one donated dollar goes to pay for salaries or any other manpower costs. Their mission is to “assist the United States Marine Corps in providing a tangible sign of hope to economically disadvantaged children at Christmas.” This assistance includes providing day-to-day leadership and oversight of the Toys for Tots program, raising funds to provide toys to supplement the collections of local Toys for Tots campaigns, providing promotional and support materials, and defraying the costs of conducting annual Toys for Tots campaigns. Toys for Tots plays a critical role in developing one of our country’s most precious and valuable resources, its children, and in uniting members of local communities in a common cause each year during its annual toy collection and distribution campaigns. Additionally, Toys for Tots campaign coordinators conduct other activities and events throughout the year. Golf tournaments, bicycle races, Fun Run/Walk 5Ks, and other voluntary events are held to increase awareness and raise funding to support Toys for Tots’ mission.

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

“I am so proud to support Toys for Tots in collecting toys while delivering a message of hope to impoverished children right here in our community and showing them that they are not forgotten at Christmas,” said Chris. “The goal of this donation drive is to ensure needy children have a merry Christmas just like everyone else.” From November 16 through December 10, people can contribute to this year’s collection by bringing new, unwrapped toys to Chris’ State Farm Insurance office located at 5332 Main Street in Spring Hill on weekdays from 8:30 to 5:00, or a pickup meeting can be arranged by calling (931) 486-1600. Donations may also be made online by visiting www.toysfortots.org for people who may be constrained by transportation or time, or who are limiting their exposure to public places. 100% of the donations made at this location stay local to Maury County, and Chris’ organization has been the top Toys for Tots collection site for Maury County since 2015.

Avgolemono GREEK CHICKEN LEMON RICE SOUP k an Fr

Re s tau ra nt

Avgolemono AVGOLEMONO IS NO ORDINARY CHICKEN RICE SOUP. There is just something special, and extra luxurious, about Avgolemono. It’s a decidedly rich, comforting chicken soup with a silky broth that’s heavily scented with lemon. Delicious! I’m telling you, if you have not tried Greek Avgolemono soup, you are in for a treat! What is Avgolemono? Avgolemono, pronounced ah-vo-le-mo-no (the “g” is there, but it’s a lighter g…almost silent), refers to the tasty Greek sauce from which this chicken soup gets its name. Avgolemono sauce is a silky and fragrant sauce made of eggs, lots of lemon, and warm broth.

i n g re d ient s: + 2-3 lb. chicken breast + 1 and 1/2 cup white rice + 3/4 cup olive oil

The Ingredients

+ 2/3 tbsp salt + 1/2 tbsp black pepper + 1 tbsp chicken base + 5 eggs

Avgolemono Preparation

+ 1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice

prepa rat ion: Clean chicken and remove any pieces of fat or skin. Place chicken in 2 gallon pot with one gallon of water and bring to a boil. When froth appears, remove it from the surface with a large spoon. Put the oil, the salt, the pepper and the chicken base In the pot with the chicken and let boil for 30-40 min. When ready take out the chicken, let it cool a little and cut it into very small pieces. Add more water into the pot if needed to make around 3 quarts and bring it to a boil and then add the rice, stir and let the rice cook until the rice is soft. Remove the pot from the heat and add the chicken meat into the pot. In a mixer beat the eggs until fluffy and then start adding some of the stock and the lemon juice. When sauce starts getting warm and thick stop the mixer and slowly start pouring the sauce into the pot and continue to stir. After the sauce is finished, continue to stir for a few minutes until the broth and the sauce have blended nicely. Serve hot!

he missed his family and friends and the “freedom to come and go as I pleased”. He shared a positive memory about playing lots of sports and making new friends while overseas. Gary Cooper was a Corporal mechanic in the Army for 3 years. When asked what the word “freedom” means he said, “Serving your country, cause the service is good for you”. Tom Harris is one of the last living D-Day veterans. He was a Sergeant in the US Army during WW2 1942-1945. His stations included Great Britain, France and Germany. He was in the 2nd wave of D-Day behind the 16th infantry regiment of which most were lost. When he returned from the war, all he received from the government was $225. “It was just enough for me to make my way home after flying into New York. I just had the clothes on my back”. Winifred (Winnie) Breegle served in the US Navy (W.A.V.E.S) as a Cryptographer Coding Officer. Before enlisting, Winnie taught Latin, Spanish and English to high school students. She was the perfect candidate for secret coding! She was a member of a secret society of 10 coders, charged with using the all-verbal Navajo language to send and receive confidential and urgent messages. Reflecting upon her service, Mrs. Breegle shares, “freedom should be our highest goal in life but that does not mean that you should do everything that you want to do just for yourself. There is a saying, “freedom isn’t free” The military does their share to provide freedom for us all.” While each Veteran had some fond and some painful memories from their time of service, they all agreed about one thing: America is worth fighting for! Freedom is a privilege to be treasured by all.
