Husband-Wife Team Fuse Idea into Sweet-Smelling Business ARTICLE CINDY O’HARA
IT’S ONLY BEEN THREE YEARS, BUT KEITH AND DEANNA MCCLINTOCK HAVE MADE A BIG IMPACT IN ST. LOUIS AND THE ST. CHARLES COUNTY AREA WITH THEIR BUSINESS, CANDLE FUSION STUDIO. The flagship shop opened in December 2017 in the Central West End, and since then, the couple has expanded to open a second studio at 201 S. Main St. in Historic St. Charles. With a marketing and communications background for her and business operations for him, coupled with a love for candles, they strive to create “memorable joy and provide something unique to the community,” according to their website, TheCandleFusionStudio.com. “We have a candle library of 100 different fragrances,” Deanna says. “We invite our guests in, give them a small clipboard and let them smell themselves silly.” When a guest is finished, they write down their favorite scents. Customers can choose different shapes and styles of candles, as well as different volumes to create their signature scent. Each candle is made of soy wax and has a cotton wick for a “nice, long, clean burn.” Customers can also choose from an array of products such as home fragrance sprays, body sprays or waxed hearts for burners. “Usually there are two to four fragrances paired together per product,” Deanna says. Once a customer chooses their scent, the candle makers go to work, so that in two hours, it’s finished. In the interim,

guests are “steps away from a great lunch or dinner on Main Street so that when you come back, the candles are ready for pickup,” Deanna adds. The Candle Fusion Studio caters to everyone from kids, to grandkids, to great grandmothers. To date, the studio has hosted bridal showers, corporate team-building events, ladies nights out and various events with other Main Street businesses. The studio hosts a fragrance event at the end of the month where food and refreshments are plentiful. In addition, you can place custom-order candles for special days such as birthdays, Mother’s Day, weddings or business client gifts. The McClintocks say they open the doors of their studio “every day like we open the doors to our home, with the ultimate goal being for you to feel like a dear friend and a five-star guest—welcomed, treasured and provided with the very best.” While both studios have seen success and the McClintocks have enjoyed the fruits of their labor, it hasn’t been without its challenges, such as designing and constructing the studios and transforming both retail spaces—never mind the emotion that goes along with all of it. “But, you believe in your dream, and you want to share it—even though it is a lot of hard work,” Deanna says. For all the blood, sweat and tears, the McClintocks have reaped the rewards of their dream, according to Deanna. “You surround yourself with other women business owners, share common experiences and live with passion, certainly joy with what you do, and success comes.” May 2019 | St. Charles County Lifestyle

Jeanne and Andrea Liston
DESIGNING A COMPANY’S FUTURE
BEFORE MY MOM [JEANNE LISTON, HEAD DESIGNER] CAME TO WORK WITH MY DAD [KEITH LISTON, SECOND-GENERATION OWNER OF LISTON DESIGN BUILD, FORMERLY LISTON CONSTRUCTION], THE CONCEPT WAS MORE AN ‘IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, WE CAN BUILD IT,’” SAYS ANDREA LISTON, A DESIGNER AT LISTON DESIGN BUILD. “Now, my mom helps clients create their dreams. Together, we are the ‘design’ in Liston Design Build.” This dynamic duo brings a personal, concierge service to the company’s growing roster of clients. Andrea’s degree in architectural studies and interior design affords her a technology acumen that allows clients to see full renderings of spaces before hammer hits nail. Jeanne has taught her daughter about the importance of innovation and processes to streamline operations and enhance the client experience. Daily, they learn from each other. As Jeanne comprehensively educates clients about their design selections, Andrea takes note of her communication style—and the fact that clients gravitate toward, and instantaneously trust, her mom. Jeanne observes, as Andrea creates lifelike renderings with actual client selections, and watches the joy as clients see a picture of their space for the first time. “Liston Design Build would not be where it is today without these women,” Keith says. “Homeowners want a partner as they select essential elements for their space, and we are one of the few remodeling companies that can offer that without referring to an outside designer.” Their son-in-law also works with the team as a project manager. “The growth of this company—from my father-in-law to my husband—has been a labor of love,” Jeanne says. “Keith and I are thrilled that we have two family members committed to making it a third-generation company. The company we helped grow will be led by those we love, and that is an amazing feeling.” 14

THERE ARE MORE THAN 9,300 FEMALE-OWNED BUSINESSES IN ST. Charles County, and many more that are co-owned by a woman. St. Charles County Lifestyle asked several local female entrepreneurs about what motivated them to get into the industry or business they are in and what advice they have for other women business owners. Their responses are as unique as each one of them is. Beth Mohr
Beth Mohr
ABIGAIL'S APPAREL "I am not a conformist and have loved not being tied down with a 9 to 5. Prior to owning my own boutique, I was a real estate agent, which gave me flexibility while my kids were in school. When the market became volatile, I was contemplating what I wanted to do next. While visiting a clothing boutique on a family vacation, I learned it was a franchise, and something made me want to look into it further. I joined that franchise. I had never worked in retail, but with my love for fashion and the training I received, I developed a brand that has been on North Main Street in St. Charles for almost eight years. I love helping women feel good about themselves and empowering them with their fashion choices."

BOGEY HILLS COUNTRY CLUB "Bogey Hills Country Club has been my family’s business since 1962. I have watched my grandparents and parents run the club throughout the years. At first, I did not think I wanted to be in the golf business, so after college, I worked for a document imaging firm. After about a year, I started to get the golf itch and began working at the smaller golf courses. A position opened up at Bogey Hills for membership director. I took the position and never looked back. I worked my way up to food and beverage, to clubhouse manager and now general manager and president of the Club. My main motivation was the love of the members and the family atmosphere we have at Bogey Hills. ADVICE "My advice is to never back down. Working hard, keeping your head up and staying focused is what will get you to your goals. Listen to yourself and what your gut tells you. If you stay true to yourself, do the hard work, then success will follow.

SUSAN BREWER SERVICE FIRST REAL ESTATE "I bought my first home when I was 20 with interest rates at 18.5 percent, so I have loved real estate from a young age. I am excited about home decor and design as well, so those two came together in my desire to become a realtor. My background in customer service and retail helped me to easily transition to this field. ADVICE "Owning a business is a goal many people have, but I'm not always sure they know how much work and responsibility it really is. Ultimately, everything is on your shoulders, and there are people who are relying on you to be successful in order to earn a living for the family. However, knowing that you have achieved the dream of owning your own business and built something from the ground up that has become successful is the best feeling and one that I wouldn't trade for anything."

THE WHITE HARE "I opened my store with Mom in 2003, and our motivation was based on a combination of things. Having been a real estate agent for more than 20 years, she noticed many homes she was showing were in desperate need of new decor, and that was something she could help with. Growing up, we enjoyed shopping together in decor stores, always saying how fun it would be to own one. When I graduated from college, I was doing murals and faux finishes, and the time seemed right to open that 'fun store,' and the rest is history." ADVICE "Never miss out on a chance to meet others already out there making a name. By making friends in the community with other business owners, you are opening yourself up to new leads, new ideas and new strategies to implement in your own pursuit. You may also find some great friends out of it as well!"

ROEMER ORIGINALS "My love of everything sparkly began when I was a little girl. I admired all sparkly stones and rocks and studied them and jewelry-making, as a hobby, through my 20s. At the age of 32, after years of various sales/ marketing jobs, I decided to get into an industry I truly had a passion for. Four years later, I bought the store. As glamorous as it sounds, running a small business is not for the faint of heart, though. The perks of being a business owner don’t come without a lot of hard work, long hours and drive to succeed."

CRUISE PLANNERS "I have always been passionate about selling, and after my first cruise, I knew I was meant to be part of the industry. From a field of 800, I was hired as a business development manager for two major cruise lines. Now, owning my own agency with my husband has taken me off the road and has allowed me to continue doing what I have always loved: sharing my passion for travel, my knowledge/experience and destinations I’ve been to." ADVICE "Don’t wait for it to happen; make it happen. Being a home-based agency, business doesn’t come to us, I have to go out and find it. We have to educate that we don’t just sell cruises but all travel. Cultivate relationships. In travel, it is all about relationships. And remember, if you think you can, you will."

We wanted to be able to provide unique, quality items at reasonable prices to help mothers of singles and multiples afford our products and have a local community of women they could interact with on our Facebook page." This will allow you to expand your reach of customers and have a more rounded business portfolio."

ZANDER’S JEWELRY "My father started this business a couple of years before I was born. I went to the University of South Florida and received a B.A. in psychology and then returned home and decided to see if this business was something meant for me. I got my graduate gemologist degree from Gemological Institute of America and really enjoyed the study of gems and the entire jewelry business. My father taught me that hard work pays off. Independence is so critical in being successful. I can only hope I’m doing the same for my children." ADVICE "My advice for women is to take pride in your success. Be confident in yourself, and don’t be intimidated due to stigmas of the past. True beauty comes from within, and I am here to help enhance their beauty and show every woman she is beautiful, despite any outward flaws there may be." That certainly holds true for my mom, Dr. Christy Jenkins, who owns Naturo Health Solutions, the other 'half' of our business. She's the most caring person and doctor there is!"

Collecting Shoes, Giving Hope
Christy Weber Leads Shoes & Hope
SEVERAL YEARS AGO, CHRISTY WEBER OF ST. Charles was working in a community in Guatemala that did not have access to clean water. That lead her to start a project called Shoes & Hope in March 2015 to raise funds for water in this community. Shoes & Hope provided the materials, while the men in the village provided all of the labor. “Little did I know that because of the impact for this one community, we would still be going strong four years later,” Christy says. “I lead Shoes & Hope as a full-time volunteer. We have no paid staff and operate on mostly donated resources. Because of this, we are able to have maximum impact in the communities that we serve. “The vision is a world with healthy, self-sustaining communities with access to clean water, sustainable sanitation solutions

DECIDING TO GO INTO PUBLIC SERVICE IS NEVER ARTICLE JEFF RUNYAN AN EASY ONE. The hours are long, and at times, the job can be thankless, which is why so many who work in public service say it has to be a calling. For Sally Faith, it was her passion to serve in government that led her to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2004, where she stayed for the maximum two-year term limit, before deciding to move on.
Sally Faith Encourages Women to Pursue Their Passion ARTICLE CINDY O'HARA
“I learned a lot. Sometimes we scare ourselves out of things,” Sally says. “I knew I’d do a good job no matter where I was, and it’s important to give ourselves credit so that we can move forward.” When asked what the biggest obstacle was that she overcame while in Jefferson City, she implied it was finding her voice. “I had to work and show that I knew what I was doing and speak up about what I wanted. If I wanted to be the chairman of a committee, I had to follow through with it and work hard,” she says. “In Jeff City, I was one voice in 163. I got things done, but it was harder.” Sally went on to serve as mayor of St. Charles from 2011 to May 2019. As for the best advice she would give her younger self and women in leadership coming up? “It’s to know that you can do whatever you’re passionate about. I’m a different generation, which is to say, I needed permission. You don’t need permission. You need to go forward and learn and decide what it is you want to do.”
