and the 2022 Patrons' Choice Award at the Eiteljorg Museum. Her art has been featured in renowned publications such as Fine Art Connoisseur and Architectural Digest.

Gladys's paintings celebrate Spanish culture, depicting Mexican escaramuzas gallantly riding horses, Flamenco señoritas in extravagant Andalusian dresses, and classic damsels in intimate, delicate poses. Her work captures the passion and grace of these cultural icons, blending tradition with contemporary western art. Her pieces are featured in many significant private and public collections globally.

GLADYS ROLDAN-DE-MORAS

Gladys Roldan-de-Moras, a world-renowned international artist, has lived in San Antonio for over 30 years, drawing deep inspiration from her love of Spanish culture. Passed down by her maternal grandfather, a proud charro who helped promote Charreria as Mexico's national sport, her heritage shapes much of her work. Known for her vibrant and dramatic style, Gladys has earned numerous prestigious awards, including the 2023 Frederic Remington Painting Award

RUTH BUSHMAN

Ruth Bushman, the talented glassblowing artist behind Caliente Hot Glass, has carved a unique path in the art world. Originally studying architecture, Ruth’s creative spirit led her to glassblowing, where she found herself immersed in an art form that combines technical skill with emotional depth. Over time, she became captivated by the process of transforming simple materials, like scrap glass, into beautiful, meaningful works of art. Her signature Transformation Orbs invite people to reflect and engage with their own personal experiences. These small, interactive orbs can be filled with handwritten notes, which can later be

YULI CHANG

Yuli Chang's journey into the world of pottery is one that bridges both passion and practicality. As a child, she was captivated by the artistry of her mother and sister, but it wasn’t until years later that she decided to follow her creative instincts. A successful career in corporate finance initially defined her life, but the lure of pottery eventually won out. Making the bold decision to transition to full-time artistry, Yuli found herself deeply engaged in her craft, which she says now reflects her ongoing evolution.

Her work is profoundly influenced by her environment—living in San Antonio

memorialized in glass, symbolizing both the fragility and permanence of human connection. Ruth’s work is rooted in the belief that art transcends the physical piece itself—it’s about fostering relationships and sharing vulnerability with the world around us.

Ruth is also influenced by her partner, Glen Andrews II, a fellow glassblower and philosophical artist. Together, they run the hot shop, where Ruth assists in creating stunning glass pieces. Through their partnership, Ruth has learned valuable lessons in both art and life, including the importance of balance, resilience, and listening to the materials at hand. As she continues to explore new techniques, Ruth remains dedicated to sustainability, incorporating found objects and vintage fabrics into her creations.

Her passion for glassblowing, along with her commitment to sustainability and human connection, has helped Ruth establish herself as a distinctive voice in the glass art world. Her work serves as a reminder that art is not just about creating something beautiful—it’s about creating something that connects people to one another, and to the world around them.

DUSTY SAW DESIGNS

Dusty Saw Designs is more than just a small family business—it’s a testament to the passion, dedication, and craftsmanship of its founders, Dusty and Rocio. Specializing in custom wood wall art, Dusty Saw Designs brings your personal photos or ideas to life in the form of unique, handcrafted wooden creations. Whether it's a family portrait, a company logo, or a custom plaque, Dusty and Rocio pour their hearts into every piece, ensuring it becomes a cherished work of art.

The duo’s work extends beyond personalized art to include custom hardwood furniture, hand-turned wood bowls, cutting boards, hardwood boxes, and handcrafted urns. Each item is made with care using local materials sourced from around San Antonio, including wood from nearby trees. The couple’s craftsmanship is also deeply embedded in the community, working closely with local departments such as the San Antonio Police Department, Austin PD, and Homeland Security to create custom plaques for first responders. Their partnership with Lackland Air Force Base further emphasizes their commitment to serving those who serve.

At the heart of Dusty Saw Designs is the couple’s dedication to creating oneof-a-kind wood art that tells a story. Dusty explains, “We work with each customer to ensure their vision becomes a timeless keepsake. Our goal is to make something that lasts for generations, a piece that can be passed down as a family treasure.” This personal touch extends to every project, whether it’s a unique wall art piece or a custom-designed piece of furniture. Dusty and Rocio’s vision is simple yet powerful—to create art that lasts, art that’s meaningful, and art that’s made with love. For them, it’s not just about wood and tools, but about connecting with their community and making a lasting impact.

provides endless inspiration with its vivid colors, lush parks, and surrounding nature. The greens and blues of the local landscape are often mirrored in her pieces, while touches of pink and red reflect the vibrancy of the city. These elements come together to form a rich tapestry of influences that shape her creations. At the heart of her work is a dedication to ceramic clay, particularly through wheel throwing and sculpting. While she enjoys a variety of pottery forms, teapots hold a special place in her heart, deeply tied to her Taiwanese roots. For Yuli, making teapots is a way to connect with her heritage, as well as to her ongoing growth as an artist.

For Yuli, pottery is much more than an artistic pursuit—it’s a journey of constant exploration. As she molds each piece, she sees it as a reflection of her personal and professional growth. “My work is about growth and exploration, both artistically and personally,” she explains. Each piece is not just a vessel or decorative object; it represents a moment of change, a new stage in her artistic evolution. Through the struggles between dream and reality, Yuli’s pottery carries the story of her own growth—a journey that continues to unfold, one piece at a time.

Mitchell’s Landing

A Playground of Love, Legacy, and Inclusivity

On Saturday, November 30th, the grand opening of Mitchell’s Landing Playground marked a significant milestone in the San Antonio community. Located at 20202

Hardy Oak, across the street from Los Lomas Elementary, this half-acre, piratethemed inclusive playground is designed to meet the developmental and accessible needs of families from all walks of life. Within just three days of its opening, the playground had already welcomed over 20,000 visitors, with the opening event attracting more than 2,000 attendees, including local and state leaders.

Mitchell’s Landing is a testament to a vision six years in the making. From its conception to the final build, the nearly $3 million project was brought to life through the collaboration of the Mitchell Chang Foundation, San Antonio Parks & Recreation Department, and San Antonio Public Works. The Mitchell Chang Foundation played a central role by donating the playground equipment, its installation, and half of the safety ground cover. Key community partners

like H-E-B, Susan Naylor, and the TND Family Foundation also made significant contributions to the project.

This inclusive playground features four distinct areas of play: the Shipwrecked Pirate Ship, the H-E-B Mermaid Lagoon and Beach, the Abandoned Spanish Mission, and the Marsh Bog. Each of these areas includes free-standing, inclusive equipment tailored to meet different developmental needs and provide accessibility to individuals with disabilities. Mitchell’s Landing is home to several one-of-a-kind custom inclusive features, such as the Hammock Horizontal Climber, the Roller Slide with a Safety Waiting Bench, the H-E-B Exploration Rocks, the Inclusive Pirate Scavenger Hunt, and a Tile Mosaic with a Braille Sonnet. The playground's design was influenced by community input, with a shade cover designed to resemble the ocean, ensuring a cool and inviting atmosphere for all.

The playground was built to honor the memory of three-year-old Mitchell

Mitchell’s Landing is a reflection of a community coming together in love and remembrance. “

Chang, who tragically drowned at his swim school in 2018. As Michell’s family worked through the grieving process that followed, they knew that helping their oldest son, Evan, understand and navigate the loss of his brother was a very important piece. The building of the playground and the foundation helped his family keep his legacy alive as well as through the grieving process.

Mitchell’s parents, Dr. Marvin and April Chang, wanted to ensure their son’s joyful, adventurous spirit lived on in a positive way. Mitchell was happy and warm. He loved life and aspired to be a pirate, so his parents decided the best way to preserve his memory was by creating an inclusive space where all children, regardless of ability, could play together. Their commitment to building an all-accessible playground stemmed from the recognition that such spaces were sorely lacking in the community. For the Chang

family, Mitchell’s Landing was not just about creating a playground; it was about making a lasting impact. The Chang family foundation, through this project, is also committed to promoting water and swim safety education, hoping to prevent other families from experiencing the devastating loss they endured. They are actively working on passing Mitchell’s Bill, which will introduce new safety standards aimed at protecting children in swimming environments.

Mitchell’s Landing is a reflection of a community coming together in the spirit of love and remembrance. It serves as a lasting tribute to a little boy who was full of life, determination, and kindness, and it offers families a space where children of all abilities can come together, learn, and play. With its unique design, inclusivity, and a heartfelt mission, Mitchell’s Landing is not only a playground but also a beautiful legacy in memory of Mitchell Chang.

“Unlike the bustling downtown Riverwalk, the Mission Trails offers a peaceful and scenic view of nature.”

Hometown Adventures

Discovering the Hidden Gems of San Antonio

San Antonio is a city full of rich history, and sometimes, we overlook the treasures right in our backyard. One hidden gem is the San Antonio Mission Trails, which provides a look into the city’s Spanish colonial past. While tourists flock to these sites, locals often don’t take the time to visit or learn about their fascinating history.

The San Antonio Mission Trails, or El Camino de San Antonio Missions, consists of five historic Spanish missions established in the 18th century by Franciscan friars. These missions were created to spread Christianity to indigenous people of Texas and  have become key cultural landmarks.

The missions making up the trail are San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo), Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. Together, they form the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site highlighting the importance of our city's history. The San Antonio Missions are also part of the larger El Camino de Santiago, a famous pilgrimage route in Europe. San Antonio is the only place outside of Europe where you can begin this spiritual journey.

The Mission Trails, developed in 1993, connects all five missions along the San Antonio River. The trail offers a way to visit these sites and allows for an easy exploration of the area. Each mission is about 2.5 miles apart, making it easy to visit all five in a day.

Unlike the bustling downtown Riverwalk, the Mission Trails offers a peaceful and scenic view of nature, showcasing efforts to restore the river’s ecosystem. This project has improved water quality and created a serene environment where locals can enjoy birdwatching, fishing, and walking among native Texas grasses and wildflowers. It’s a perfect escape for nature lovers.

Each mission offers a unique experience. Mission Concepción is renowned for its “Restored by Light” display, which recreates the lost frescoes that once decorated its façade. The mission, founded in 1716, is one of the oldest and best-preserved in the area.

Mission San José, established in 1720, is a stunning example of Spanish colonial architecture and remains an active church. It was also once used for military purposes for Mexican and Texans. Today,

the church is still a thriving community and one of the most visited missions.

Mission San Juan, originally founded in 1731 and relocated from East Texas, is known for its Romanesque archway and still-functioning chapel and bell tower. The mission’s architecture and historical significance make it a must-see.

Mission Espada, the southernmost mission, is notable for its well-preserved irrigation system that brought water to the fields. Founded in 1690 and relocated in 1731, the mission is one of the best examples of early agricultural practices in the area.

Originally founded as Mission San Antonio de Padua in 1718, the Alamo is best known for the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Today, the Alamo stands as a symbol of courage and sacrifice, with its preserved chapel offering a glimpse into the past and a chance to learn about the historic battle.

For locals, taking a day to explore the missions offers a chance to connect with our city’s past, enjoy the outdoors, and learn something new. Plus, the San Antonio Missions are free to visit, with Ranger-led tours available to enhance your experience. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best adventures are right in our own hometown. Whether you’re a local or a first-time visitor, exploring these historic missions will give you a new appreciation for the beauty and culture that make San Antonio unique. Go be a tourist in your own town—there’s so much to discover just around the corner.

TO MY

Valentine

Create timeless keepsakes for those you love with this easy DIY Valentine Stationary. There is something special and reminiscent of our earlier years of creating homemade valentines for those special in our lives. While stores are filled with Valentine candy, cards and gifts, the thoughtfulness and time put into to a handmade card holds a different meaning. Words are the things we treasure most, so let those you care about most know how you treasure them this Valentine’s Day.

What you will need

• Kitchen Knife

• Red or Russet Potato (for heart)

• Romaine lettuce (for rose)

• Acrylic Paint

• Paint Brush

• Blank Envelopes

• Blank Cards

• Heart Template (SilvertoothHome.com/blog/DIY-stationery)

• Hand Lettering Template (SilvertoothHome.com/blog/DIY-stationery)

• Light Box

Instructions for Heart Prints

1. Cut the potato in half. Using a small knife, carefully carve a heart shape onto the flat side of the potato. Carve freestyle or use the free template under “DIY Stationery” on the blog at silvertoothhome.com/ blog/diy-stationery. Even when using the template, each carving will come out as unique art like the ones you see here.

2. With a paint brush, apply paint to the heart shape on the potato.

3. Stamp the potato heart onto blank stationery.

4. Set aside until completely dry.

Instructions for Rose Prints

1. Cut the end off of romaine lettuce. Set leaves aside and use the stem.

2. Using a paintbrush, apply paint to the lettuce stem.

3. Stamp the lettuce “rose” onto blank stationery.

4. Set aside until completely dry.

Once your stationery is completely dry it is time to add beautiful Valentine’s Day lettering. If you have beautiful handwriting then draw free hand. If you’re not as confident use  a light box and my hand lettering template (found on the blog at SilvertoothHome.com/blog/DIYstationery) to transfer lettering onto the stationery. To do this, first lay the hand lettering template on a light box with the stationery on top. Then trace the hand lettering onto the stationery with a pen or marker of choice.

THE SCOTTSDALE LURE OF

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale—also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm

(including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

PLAY

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.

For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.

Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.

A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.
