The Curious Case of the Mistaken Fiddle THE DRESS WAS, OBVIOUSLY, WHITE AND GOLD. Except to those equally certain it was, obviously, blue and black. I was reminded of that recent online meme as we fielded a few questions about our June issue, which featured on our cover one of the finest professional musicians in the area, Steve Gritman, fiddling up a storm in the SW Lake County countryside. We’d

had a great afternoon looking for interesting photo locations, and were pleased to find a starkly dramatic slice of pasture backlit by a bright sun. Steve played a favorite Charlie Daniels tune, and I kept the camera clicking. As fast as he fiddled, I needed my camera’s fastest shutter speed to keep his bow from disappearing in a blur. Later when I examined the photo, I was pleased at the framing against the gnarled tree’s stark backdrop, and catching the sun’s rays through its branches, with a light trail of lens flare leading from the sun down to Steve’s violin. I rejoiced, thinking the pretty striking image and its location gave the phrase “country music” a literal twist. The team here agreed it would make a fine cover photo for our first-ever Guy’s Issue. As the issue hit the streets, we heard from many who commented favorably on the issue and its cover. And then: there were a few who glanced at that handsome strapping gent standing in a field and told us sure as shootin’ that he might be huntin’. One commenter said it

unexpected context. The mind’s eye sometimes fills in what it expects to see rather than what’s really there. In this day and age, that’s important for us all to keep in mind. Thanks to all who commented favorably or otherwise - we appreciate your input. It’s your honest feedback that gives us a chance to continually improve. Speaking of improvements, let’s talk about the weather! This issue’s sunny summer theme includes a great road trip, summer fashion, favorite al fresco dining spots, vacation destinations, great summer bites and outdoor games to try, and more.

AN ADVOCATE FOR DECLUTTERING “You know how work seems 10 times harder when your desk is cluttered?” asks Jake Silker, Business Development Director at Zippy Shell in Lake Zurich. “The fact is, the human brain functions best when it's not surrounded by an abundance of stuff.” Silker offers five reasons why we should all try to declutter this summer: • We concentrate better in spaces that are spare, neat and organized. • It’s okay to let go of unfinished projects to revolutionize your perception of your space and your life. • While some artists thrive in a messy studio, most of us do our best work in a minimalistic space. • Unorganized spaces can mess with your sleep. When your belongings are at rest, you will be, too. • You'll be happier in an uncluttered space. With less to clean, you have less to worry about. ROAD TRIP

TUCKED AWAY IN THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF WISCONSIN, IN THE SMALL BURG OF TOMAH, PLANS ARE UNDERWAY FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY WEEKEND-LONG CELEBRATION: VINO FEST! With a hard-to-get grant from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, and eager participation from winemakers drawn from across the Badger State, this first-of-its kind celebration is drawing rave notices from wine aficionadas looking forward to a taste of what Wisconsin has to offer.

ROAD TRIP TO MONROE COUNT Y ’S VINO FEST

While the thought of wine from Wisconsin seems, shall we say, unusual, this nascent industry is making waves and turning around the perception of America’s Dairyland as just a place for cheese, beer and Friday fish fries. VINO FEST, the brainchild of Steve Peterson, an entrepreneur and Monroe County Economic Development Coordinator, will be in located half way between Madison and Eau Claire with Interstates 90 & 94 crisscrossing the county. Like anyplace in Wisconsin the county is dotted with lakes, many adjacent to abundant cranberry fields flooded late in the season for the harvest of this important agricultural product. VINO FEST, however, takes the perception of Wisconsin, especially the small city of Tomah, into an entirely new direction. It’s a brand new festival and is a labor of love as the popularity of wineries around ARTICLE MICHAEL BEIGHTOL

18

SW Lake Lifestyle | July 2018

Wisconsin has never been bigger.

VINO FEST is for the “pure” wine lovers looking for a fest where you can enjoy a great glass of wine, shop artisans’ booths for that unique piece of art and listen to the easy sounds of contemporary music & jazz with fellow wine lovers. It’s really the ideal weekend getaway for anybody seeking an easy drive (3:20) to get away from it all. Peterson says visitors from SW Lake Co. should expect a weekend full of fun events: wine tastings, great food, music, theater, a “Wineoceros Walk” along the shores of Lake Tomah, VINO FOR VETS Motorcycle Ride (free entry on Sunday for military veterans and active military) a fun run, and more. Most are fundraisers for local not-for-profit organizations. Every aspect of VINO Fest has been carefully thought out. For example, “We’re calling the first full day ‘Dapper Saturday,’” Peterson says. “We want festgoers to come dressed in their favorite dapper clothes of the Thirties, Forties and Fifties.” CONTINUED >

Bike trail incorporating a converted railroad tunnel.

VINO FEST features local Wisconsin wines.

MONROE CO. ALSO HOME FOR LEGENDARY BIKING Travelers to Monroe County often haul bikes atop their vehicles. The county is home to one of the legendary bike trails in the entire Midwest. Considered the first rail-to-trail in the United States, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail features three rock tunnels and five small towns along its 32.5-mile route. Traveling between Sparta and Elroy, the trail stretches through the communities of Norwalk, Wilton and Kendall, passing by wetlands, prairies, farmland and unglaciated areas. Three railroad tunnels, each more than 140 years old, highlight the trail. The tunnels near Kendall and Wilton are each about 0.25 miles long; the tunnel between Norwalk and Sparta is 0.75 miles long. Flashlights and jackets are recommended in the tunnels. If you’ve never biked a tunnel they are dark and cool, even on the brightest days. Water from springs above the tunnels can trickle onto bikers, heightening the spookiness of these remarkable features. 20
