an you believe it’s already May, just seven months before Christmas! I know what you’re thinking, “Christmas?” Not something we want to think about at this moment, yet we know it will be here before we know it.

In Tulsa, the Spirit of Giving seems to be an every month occurrence, not just the last month of the year. I have come to know a community of the most amazing business men and women who have truly made our city a better place. Business owners who sacrifice their time, some who help furnish an orphanage so that children can live and have a place to call home, or the business owner who every month receives a call to donate and can’t seem to say no because they know it’s for a good cause. Take the Designer Showcase for example. This event helps bring awareness and financial support for the Tulsa Public Schools Foundation. The men and women involved in create it give not to be noticed; they sacrifice their time to allow someone else to enjoy their time and the talents of the designer whose imagination can create a beautiful place for the sake of those less fortunate. They are the Tulsa business men and women who give effortlessly of their money, time and talents with no complaint to help those in need.

Showcase Spaces Interior designer Natalie Nirk shares details about fellow designers’ spaces--and her own space--inside the Sherman Estate for this year’s Designer Showcase

Article Natalie Nirk | Photography Beautiful Exchange Photography

Family Room

Outdoor Living Room

The first floor family room was transformed into a warm, relaxing space filled with unique textures and surprising elements by Sarah McPhail SR Hughes, a Brookside store owned by Beth Sachse and Sally Hughes. Everything about the room -- the colors, draperies, furnishings -- is so light and crisp which induces calmness throughout. One of the must-see pieces in the room is a simply divine rabbit hair chair, combining modern lines and voluptuous curves. “It was one of only 100 made and we were very excited to be able to get one of the two that were in New York shipped here in time for the showcase,” notes Sarah. Being Sarah’s first experience with participating in the designer showcase, she expressed relief that everything went very smoothly other than the fact that the two main pieces for the room--a gorgeous Tufty-Time sectional and an Arne sofa--didn’t make it before some of the published photos were taken of the room. These pieces arrived just before the private parties began and I can tell you they were worth the wait!

Gina Miller and Brenda Rice, owners of GHD Interiors, handled the decor for the outdoor living room in addition to being the owner’s general contractor and volunteering as designer liaisons for the showcase. They achieved a true “indoor and outdoor” sanctuary by incorporating two 12’ width glass paneled garage doors allowing the owner to enjoy it year round. Even when they’re closed it feels as if you’re still enjoying the outdoors, not to mention the view of the pool area is spectacular. A fully functioning outdoor kitchen makes it a fabulous entertaining area, along with a spacious sitting and dining area that each seat up to eight. Gina and Brenda say they wanted the décor, done in bright turquoise, black and white with orange and lime green, to read “Happy.” Just imagine Pharrell Williams’ hit song ‘Happy’ playing in the background while drinking a margarita.

Bedroom Suite

Julie O’Connor of JKO Interiors and Jackie Brown of Interiors by Jackie Brown united their talents in working on the redesign of the ‘son’s bedroom suite.’ Combining their sense of environmental consciousness, their overall intention was to focus more awareness on the strengths of sustainable design while creating an uncluttered look. O’Connor and Brown selected pallet wood, particularly for its raw natural characteristics and interurban feel, for both a custom made desk and a custom headboard with builtin nightstands accommodating a full- or queen-sized bed – just a few of my favorite pieces in the room. “Both pieces give the room much needed character and visual weight and we repurposed several items to create a unique space that a college-aged man would appreciate,” O’Connor notes. An example of the repurposing can be seen with the curtain rod which is actually a reclaimed staircase banister finished with rings made from parts found at a local hardware store. They enhanced the masculine feel of the room further by going with a heady mix of textured fabrics and strong patterns including a glen plaid in wool, a soft low-pile velvet, a waffle-textured cotton, and a heavy cotton canvas. A palette of rich earth tones in the room including midtone grey walls with chocolate brown and soft tan accents evokes thoughts of nature. A deep rusty-orange adds an accent to the neutral shades. “We had a great time pulling together materials and fabrics for this room,” says Brown. “It was a very natural flowing design for us.” Master Bedroom

The master bedroom makeover was beautifully completed by Susan Eddings-Perez of Susan D. Eddings Designs, an accomplished artist as well as successful interior designer known for showcasing her artistic talents in her original works of art and custom finishes on walls, ceilings, furnishings and more. “The chairs as side tables may not work for everyone but I love them for this room,”

she says of the antique rustic chairs at each side of the bed, adding another element of surprise to the room. “We all as designers have happy mistakes,” she explains about how the headboard was created. I wholeheartedly agree with her, having experienced many of my own during design processes. She shared how she carefully designed and drew plans of the custom headboard for the upholsterer, which was to be made using custom-quilted fabric for the raised panels. When the fabric was cut incorrectly during the upholstery process with no time to wait for more fabric to be quilted, Susan and the upholsterer ultimately devised a plan to use the mis-cut pieces in a band detail in the center panel of the headboard. This pleasantly resulted in an even more interesting piece, much like the extremely unique Asian sideboard opposite the bed, originally a bargain consignment store find with a bad hunter green sponge job that she later found to be in need of a construction overhaul. After discovering a problem with the base of the piece resulting in its removal, Susan had a new customized metal base constructed which brought the sideboard up to a height she liked much better which also enabled her to use her signature gold-leaf finish.

Some other must-see pieces in this master bedroom are the striking wood and metal desk/table with a custom base she designed, including a tabletop that is a piece of her artwork; the pair of ottomans beneath the desk, originally consignment shop tables she worked her magic on by refinishing them and topping them with cushions; and the gold leaf-framed wallpaper panels she installed behind the bed to add drama, texture and color against the white headboard. All of the artwork in the space are her original pieces and since she also made original pieces for several other designers in the home including myself, she got so busy she was up all night finishing the piece hung above the Asian sideboard. continued >

seven people comfortably with the strategically placed furniture including a bar table and two barstools, a loveseat, an armless chair and two ottomans.” A smaller scale area rug helps to separate the living area from the kitchen and adds to the cozy feel of the space with warm neutrals and a pop of gold accents.

South Stairs and Landing Areas

The south stairs and landing areas of the home from the first to the third floor were done by Dixie Moseley of Joie de Vie Interiors, located in Jenks. In previous years she had assisted other designers but this was her first year working on her own space, and she did a wonderful job of making a typical staircase and landing area look extraordinary. One of the initial reasons she was so thrilled to be a part of the project was the home’s architectural style, which she had also recently used in designing the restroom of their new showroom and design studio. The inspiration for her space was a beautiful oil painting, Glamoure, placed in the third floor landing area as the main focal point. “All furnishing selections and our color palette of cream, black, silver, and gold flowed from this painting,” she remarks. “I designed the champagne velvet chair and the ebony stained console table to create the feel of an elegant, glamorous lounge. The two-level staircase became a fantastic art gallery featuring paintings from local artists, a piano keys sculpture, and beautiful photography of the rich Art Deco architectural legacy of Tulsa’s downtown.” Guest House – Combined Living Area/Kitchen

Stacy Turnipseed, owner of Interiors by Stacy, took on the challenging task of designing the 126-square-feet of combined living room and kitchen space in the guest house above the detached garage. The full size appliances and cabinets were recycled from the kitchen of the main house which made the two areas even a bit tighter, but Stacy was up for the task and accomplished it expertly. She focused first and foremost on function over aesthetics without it appearing so at all, paying close attention to small adjustments she could make to keep an open and spacious feel to the areas. “I used inside-mounted café curtains with framed wall art groupings at each side of the windows in lieu of full-length draperies,” she says of her tricks to create the illusion of more space without sacrificing too much by way of furnishings. “The living area will seat up to 14 Tulsa Lifestyle | May 2014

Guest House – Bedroom/Bath

Susan Fielstra of Susan Fielstra Interiors completed the bedroom and bath of the guest house alongside Stacy. “I wanted to show people that you can use a designer for a budget-friendly room,” she says. Her many savvy ideas pacify a tight space and a tight budget. She worked with the same space challenges as seen in the rest of the guest quarters. To keep the room feeling light and airy, sheopted to use a full size bed and settled on white for the purchased draperies and bedding. In place of a headboard, she used letters from vintage signs found at antique stores and had a unique footboard made using a metal suitcase that pulls out like a drawer. She also designed the bookcase opposite the bed constructed by her carpenter using laminate shelving bought at a local hardware store. Susan owns Midtown Market in Tulsa offering a wide variety of furnishings, and many of her unique accessories

are found throughout the room. It’s looking like guests will never want to leave these quarters. Master Bath

I had the pleasure of working on the ‘His’ master bath and dressing area on the second floor alongside Heather Miller of The Home Collection, who designed the ‘Hers’ side of the spaces and the suite’s hallway. Since our areas are very married to each other and needed congruency, we stayed in constant contact regarding what paths we were taking while working independently on design concepts for our own spaces. The ‘bubbles’ mosaic floor tile selected by the owner for the bath areas was our initial building block for our design concepts, and then we set out on our own separate paths to narrow down wallpaper and fabric for our own areas. The ‘hers’ bath area showcases the stunning modern pedestal tub while the ‘his’ bath shows off the very sleek marble-tiled shower with a dual-swinging frameless door, and both bath areas exhibit the curved contemporary-style vanities for which we selected the custom gray stain that also finishes the closet built-ins. The homeowner loved one of the closet wallpapers we presented so much that she wanted the same pattern used in both dressing areas, using the darker steel colorway in the masculine closet and the champagne colorway for the feminine side. We were thrilled to receive the wallpaper as a donation from Romo, a high-end European wallpaper and fabric company, for the project through Tulsa Trade Secrets. I opted to do pleated privacy draperies in both the bath and dressing area of the men’s areas to add some softness to the many hard surfaces, and had cushions custom-made with a three-dimensional chevron print fabric for the built-in seating in the closet. I’ve used seven different Fabricut fabrics in my areas, and one of my favorite pieces is a curved ottoman in the center of the closet that was completely transformed from shabbiness by their beautiful fabrics and the addition of nailheads. Men’s Wearhouse generously loaned their very handsome clothing for the tour, and radiant framed fuchsia agate can be seen throughout the closet courtesy of Royce Myers Art, Ltd. Susan Eddings-Perez generously created the tall piece of artwork in the bath area very last minute to custom fit the wall where it is hung. The only real hiccup in my area was when the new medicine cabinet arrived and wouldn’t fit into the existing opening in the concrete wall, but the liaisons worked wonderfully with me to select a new mirror that could be expedited. Heather very creatively designed custom-made wood screens to be made for all the windows in her spaces with a Chippendale pattern, which are very striking whether seen inside or outside the home. White House Black Market loaned much of the lovely clothing for the tour, and Posh’s Moxie shoes line many of the built-in shelves. Other than a few challenges of wallpaper shortage and backordered cabinet hardware, we managed to pull it all together for showtime and had a great time doing it.

of horticulture at the Tulsa Garden Center. He also writes a regular agriculture column for the Tulsa World. “We have a most extraordinary garden in Tulsa. It’s a teaching garden supported by volunteers, master gardeners and businesses in the gardening industry,” says Fugatt. “It’s free and open to the public to come, explore and learn how to create gardens of their own.” Fugatt’s vision began with the idea of educating homeowners about horticultural possibilities for their own backyards. The teaching garden’s very existence is supported by the community with donations from more than 3,000 individuals, products contributed by gardening industry businesses, and land donated by the Tulsa Parks Department. The eight-year old garden, located in Woodward Park at 24th and Peoria, is a project of the Tulsa Garden Center and demonstrates the latest and most successful techniques for growing vegetables, annuals, perennials, woody plants and groundcovers. Today, more than 260 volunteers work at the garden cultivating the land and greeting visitors. “This garden is a dream because it is so collaborative,” says Fugatt. The garden is named after the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus who is considered the father of botany and established the binomial system of naming plants and animals. In fact, when you walk through the gates of Linnaeus Teaching Garden, you are greeted by a life-size, 1,000 pound sculpture of Linnaeus created by local artist Rosalyn Cook. Linnaeus is holding Gaillardia, Oklahoma’s state wildflower, and a book illustrating the “Twin Flower” or “Linnaeus Boreallis,” which was named for him. If you

The terrain slopes downward and toward the greenhouse on the west side of the garden. In addition to the plant material and water features, large boulders add visual interest. More than 280 tons of native stone and several thousand types of flowers, herbs, shrubs and trees grace the property. The water garden fits naturally into the surrounding landscape. to the vegetable garden. This garden demonstrates how to achieve maximum design impact and vegetable production in small urban spaces. Raised beds in the central portion provide well-drained areas for all kinds of vegetables. Strawberries, snap peas and other climbers grow on the north fencewhich also supports espaliered fruit trees. The plant selection of the garden is continually changing as the seasons progress from spring crops: onions, lettuce, tomatoes and okra in the summer and cool weather crops in the fall. Throughout the vegetable garden, pots contain everything from colorful chard and sunflowers to unusual plants such as cotton which draw the attention of children and adults alike. Gardeners do not use chemical fertilizers and sprays and rely instead on planting diseaseand insect-resistant varieties. Visit: The garden is open Tuesday through

Saturday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. from March 4 through December. Sunday’s 1 p.m. – 4 p.

with a purpose Tulsa Designer Showcase supports Foundation for Tulsa Schools. Article Natalie Nirk | Photography Beautiful Exchange Photography

very spring a magnificent property is unveiled to Tulsa, inviting all to view the latest work of local design talents in our community that have come together for the wonderful purpose of raising money for Tulsa Public Schools. The Tulsa Designer Showcase has been a Tulsa tradition for 41 years and never fails in offering an awe-inspiring tour of an extraordinary home. The Foundation for Tulsa Schools (FTS), operated by President and CEO Lucky Lamons and Showcase Coordinator Paula Dellavedova, oversees the entire multi-faceted Tulsa Designer Showcase project and to date has raised more than $13 million for Tulsa Public Schools. These funds help many students facing great socioeconomic challenges to be much more successful by providing additional resources needed within the school system. The substantial hardships that many students and their families deal with on a normal basis can be road blocks to their success; therefore, FTS’s mission is to aid in overcoming these barriers to give the children a chance to flourish as they deserve.

20 Tulsa Lifestyle | May 2014

FTS, a non-profit organization formed in 2001, has an impressive ability to involve as many local resources as possible into this fundraising endeavor which gives back even further to our community by promoting local businesses. I’ve been extremely honored to be a part of this yearly project as an interior designer since 2010, and each year’s property is unique and exciting in so many different ways. The Sherman Estate is the site of this year’s grand annual affair. A Streamline Moderne Art Deco style home of more than 7,400 square feet on sloping wooded grounds, the Estate’s exterior features clean white concrete and an abundance of glass, along with several curved balconies displaying double- or triple-piping. Upon entering the home, you’re greeted with more curved walls and Art Deco-style recessed ceilings complimented with cove lighting. The original tile flooring, made of straw and clay resembling terracotta, brings great warmth to the home that is now nicely contrasted with cool gray walls throughout the main rooms. The 1937 dwelling, named after oilman Howard Sherman who had the home

tertained,” she says. “It was a pleasure to work with the homeowner, who collaborated with us to achieve a perfect balance of new, modern updates while restoring and preserving the essence of the original residence. The home is a nationally recognized textbook example of Streamline Moderne Art Deco Architecture, so being allowed to work on such a special historical property was an honor.” During the renovation, several things were unearthed from years past, all appearing to be from the 1940s. Rice enjoyed the discoveries. “In the dumbwaiter shaft we found a champagne cork, a bottle cap, and a photograph of four well-dressed gentleman dining at what appeared to be a very fine restaurant,” she says. “It was fun to imagine the special occasion or the event that these items represented from a time long gone.” The estate’s renovation achieved a harmonious symmetry between the splendor of the Art Deco era and a comfortable, inviting feel desired by the homeowner today. Every nook and cranny inside and out has been luxuriously furnished by approximately 30 different designers, including myself, offering all the latest constructed, is thought by many to have been “built like a fortress” styles in fixtures, furniture, art and accessories. with its steel and concrete construction including 8-inch thick conA percentage of every item purchased benefits FTS and ticket sales crete exterior walls throughout. ries mingled with books fill these shelves, and the room is softly lit with a modern drum chandelier. Carpeting, graciously donated by Mill Creek, and much of the furnishings including horizontal-striped draperies are of calming neutral shades with various patterns and textures. Rogers’ wallpaper installer, Ron Grief, also donated his labor for her room. “This is such a great help to a designer doing Showcase because there is a financial investment, not to mention the many hours we give to the project,” she says. “However, all of us who work on the it know it is for a great cause and I am glad to be a part of helping the Tulsa Public Schools in this fundraiser.” The result of her hard work is a cool yet cozy sanctuary where one can relax and enjoy pleasant thoughts alongside the Art Deco styled fireplace. The grand staircase and second floor landing were masterfully completed by Royce Myers of Royce Myers Art, Ltd. in Tulsa with his many engaging works of art offered throughout the spaces. The curving metal handrail and balusters with Lucite or glass accents, original to the 1937 home, are beautifully complemented with a suite of enchanting framed Salvadore Dali original prints featured from Myers’ private collection. The prints are from the famous Dali’s well-known ‘Butterfly Series’ and are offered for sale all together, with works from several other contemporary artists displayed throughout the landing area. Royce and his wife, Kay, have both been very involved with FTS and the showcase together for over 20 years, but this is the first year he actually worked on completing his own space rather than solely loaning art to be displayed by other designers. “This house really spoke to me because of its compelling architecture, built during the amazing Art Deco architectural movement of the 1930s and ‘40s,” Royce says. “From Art Deco came Frank Lloyd Wright and Modernism, directing the world and changing everything, including art.” 22 Tulsa Lifestyle | May 2014

There are many small spaces in the home that pack a lot of punch, and one of these areas is the second floor hobby room and hallway located just before the master suite entrance. Robin Splawn and Michelle Harrison of Luxe Home Interiors did a remarkable job of drawing attention to their small spaces, adding touches such as wide horizontal stripes painted on the hallway walls with an intriguing group of wall accessories hung in an interesting pattern along them. Inside the hobby room the walls feature separate framed wallpaper panels in a luxurious shade of turquoise hung like art mixed with a fascinating silver metallic wall finish, turning the space into an inspiring ‘office retreat.’ The very versatile desk works well as a sofa table, entry console, or buffet, and the white lacquered chest with mirrored top is a great statement piece, both from Global Views. “It was important to us to give the room an architectural detail, but the homeowner is going to be using this room as a closet again, so we needed to do something that was not permanent,” notes Harrison. “The wallpaper panels are not permanently fixed to the wall so we can take them down after showcase, or even better they are available for purchase to raise money for Tulsa Schools.” Splawn recalls of a few challenges they overcame during the process. “A wall in the hobby room had to be moved during the renovation causing the large etagere we had planned for the space to no longer fit, and the lovely hallway ceiling fixture selected by the owner was broken during the painting phase,” says Splawn. All was well and quickly back on track after a smaller but equally impressive John Richard etagere was selected and the broken section of the hallway ceiling fixture was easily replaced. This is Harrison’s second year of participation. “It is a wonderful experience,” says Harrison. “I think it’s easy to get wrapped up in a project and want everything to go perfectly, and

when something doesn’t go as planned, you can throw in the towel or you can rise above it. The most important driving factor is that Designer Showcase is a fundraiser and that helps keep everything in perspective.” Tom’s Outdoor Living, owned by Tom Butchko, did the property’s entire landscaping including design, installation, irrigation and tree lighting. They rebuilt the grotto behind the pool area reusing around 85 percent of the original structure, also adding more masonry units and firebrick as well as wood storage area in the fireplace wall. “The fireplace was designed by Cherlyn Reeves, our landscape designer, who kept the design simple, clean, and very linear to compliment the Art Deco theme,” adds Meg Sutherland, marketing director for the company. Their imaginative use of circular pavers creating a walkway to the pool is one of my favorite additions, along with the broad metal screen and artistic gate both designed by Garden Deva. Cedar trees taken down in the area were made into picnic tables and benches through Tom’s father’s company, WellMountUSA.com. An import from Maine that belonged to the owner’s mother, the weather vane was refurbished then moved to the northwest part of the property where they added a sandstone wall around it. The company generously donated the work and materials to create the large gravel parking lot to the

south of the property in order to establish more parking for the tour. “It was a jungle and during excavation we discovered a charming little bridge that was hidden beneath the debris which leads to the property,” recalls Southerland. They did their homework in order to be in keeping with the Art Deco movement. Reeves explains the job was not a normal landscape job. “This was an amazing project-- not a typical landscaping job by any means,” says Reeves. “We truly enjoyed the challenge of designing and installing our vision for the Sherman Home.” Some of the corporate sponsors for this year include the law firm of Rosenstein, Fist & Ringold as presenting sponsor, as well as Fabricut, Fiberseal of Tulsa & Green Country, and Tulsa People--all longtime supporters of the project. Spectrum Paint Brookside also joined the cause this year and as a result virtually every space of the home is finished in Benjamin Moore high quality products. The Tulsa Civic Donors Group has made a substantial investment through their ongoing support of the Foundation’s Teacher Leader Effectiveness program, which helps to provide future leaders for the school system. The George Kaiser Family Foundation and Bank of Oklahoma are sponsors for Special Events, including occasions such as the Patrons Dinner, Mother’s Day Brunch, and Thursday Evenings with the Designers. continued >

Showcase Chairperson Sue Ann Blair as well as countless volunteers and several volunteer coordinators also donate their time to help man the property throughout the showcase events and tour. A large steering committee helps to handle so many things behind the scenes, and is happy to do so. Kay Myers of Royce Myers Art, Ltd. is a longtime steering committee member and volunteer who stresses the importance of the project. “I’m a huge supporter of arts and art education in the public schools so this project is a win-win for us that I enjoy being a part of each year,” says Myers. There really is a wonderful coming together of giving spirit from everyone involved that resonates throughout the home each year. All the wonders of the Sherman Estate should be experienced in person, as there is so much more to see than what I was able to share in this article or that photos can completely convey. From the sleek ultra-modern kitchen completed by Pohlenz Cucine on the first floor to the expansive third floor game room with panoramic views designed by Thayer Furniture and Design, there are surprises around every corner. The many bathrooms throughout the home with their intricate tile work and finishing touches made by their designers are marvelous and cannot be missed. The camaraderie I feel throughout the entire process with the other designers is inspiring, and the blood, sweat, and sometimes even tears are greatly overruled by the feeling of an accomplishment of something much larger. I am extremely proud of all my peers who take on the great honor and challenge of being part of this fundraiser. Please be sure to visit the home and help be another part of raising funds for the students and families of Tulsa Public Schools – everyone can help make a difference for these children! The Sherman Estate is located at 7228 S. Evanston Avenue in Tulsa and the public tour runs from April 25 to May 18. Tickets can be purchased at several area locations or at the door. Mother thought living alone was “just fine.” But the activities and great friends she’s made at Saint Simeon’s have made her much more active, healthy, and happy. She really enjoys art classes, luncheon outings, sing-a-longs, entertainment, walks with her friend Norma, and of course, Bingo. I’m so grateful for the wellness classes and physical therapists, who have helped her through two injuries that would have prevented her from walking. Sincerely, Priscilla

Parting Thoughts

The Love of Business, Tulsa and Design Words Tricia Gonzales

I

come from a large family, six siblings to be exact all with different tastes in food, fashion, gardening, design and careers. The common threads in our lives are the love of business, the love of travel, and most importantly the love of people and the ability to lend a helping hand when someone is in need. I’ve grown up in a family of givers; I’ve watched my parents and siblings sacrifice so much to help someone. Whether it is through financial help or volunteering their time, making a meal, or discreetly giving the gas station clerk extra money after watching a mom pull out all the change she had to put gas in her car. It’s a need that, when known, must be met and if we have it we give it, always giving 100 percent. Transplanted to Tulsa, we made it our home 27 years ago in November. At first it was not an easy move, but it was one my father knew would be right for his family. As a young child moving from a small town, I saw Tulsa as a mega city. Now having traveled all over the U.S., I have different feelings of that “mega city;” my travels have made me come to love and appreciate Tulsa.

A business owner myself, I love to help the businessmen and women in our community. To bring awareness and share the stories of the many men and women who support the local business or restaurant. To bring awareness to foundations and nonprofits making a difference in our community. To share the humble beginnings and what it took to be the successful business they are today. To highlight those that volunteer their time when a need arises. These people are comprised of moms and dads who for some are business owners, motivational speakers, doctors, artists, teachers, clergy, gardeners, etc. We are a community that arises to the challenge to help others, and maybe for those who typically have the selfish motive to help themselves, it is still within in us to do good and to want to be a part of something greater than ourselves. I love Tulsa. The beauty within our city -- in the heart of the people, and in the landscape, from the beautiful historic gardens, the architecture and the historic homes on display for us to view.
