Editor’s Letter

You can teach an old dog a new trick.

F

or most of my 40-something years, I’ve been a “people person:” one who gets energy from being with people and values relationships with them. I enjoyed intelligent conversation, going out to dinner in clothes without dog hair, walking in the door without being jumped on, sleepfilled nights without barking or potty breaks. Then I married a dog person. Then we had a child who wants to be a vet, loves every kind of animal on the planet and would take in all of them. Then she nurtured her younger brother to love them, too. I became out-numbered. So, eventually I broke down and out of my selfishly-ordered life, and not only have we taken in several stray dogs (and found homes for them), buried our share of hamsters and fish and rescued a wild baby owl, but we have also owned two horses and now have a yellow Lab named Bailey. Because of the people in my life, a rather large portion of my time became dedicated to animals. The first time I noticed something different in me was my first weekend alone about a year after we got Bailey. When I opened the door, the silent greeting weighed heavily on me like an unwelcome bill in the mail. I went downstairs and it followed me. I sat down on the couch and nobody cared that I had arrived. For the past year, every time I entered a room, I’d been greet with a joyful cry and tail-wagging dance that made me feel so loved. That exuberant reception had filled places in my heart I hadn’t even been aware of. I never felt so lonely in my house. How did this happen?! C.S. Lewis wrote, “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully around with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket–safe, dark, motionless, airless–it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.” Having animals forced me to open my heart and love in new ways I wouldn’t otherwise. I am thankful to my animal-loving people for patiently revealing this to me. And I thank Bailey and our wonderful animals for teaching me that loving anyway is worth the pain. If you are an animal lover and frustrated with someone in your life who is not, have hope. A good dog can teach an old person some new things…I hope this wonderful issue about pets in our community inspires even the most non-animal person among us.

Silverado Steakhouse at The RV Ranch Excellent food and good ol’ country fun offered at this unique, local establishment Article Lara Friend | Photography Preston Power of P-Cubed Photography

f you’re in the mood to try something different this fall, there’s a hidden gem located about 20 minutes south of Downtown Tulsa where you can find fine cuisine, events and family fun. The RV Ranch, owned by Pete Madison, is next door to the Duck Creek Casino and offers many interesting attractions. “It started out as an RV Park and motor-cross arena first and then we turned it into an arena for cowboy events,” explains Madison. “There are all kinds of activities going on here including roping, rodeos, tractor pulls, barrel racing and chuck wagon races. It’s an event center and destination. We keep adding activities like the gocarts, miniature golf and amusement rides are in the works.” There is an open air saloon/bar located in the Ranch that allows you to see the different events going on in the arena while listening to live bands on Friday and Saturday nights. The RV Park is horse- and pet-friendly and you can even find the Humane Society there during events showcasing animals ready to be adopted. There are overnight corrals available for horses. Inside the RV Ranch you’ll find the Silverado Steakhouse 10

which is run by Chef Ron L’Heureux ( pronounced luh-roo), a longtime chef and culinary instructor at OSU Institute of Technology. A combination of fine dining with a rustic saloon-style setting, I’ve dined at this establishment numerous times and it has never failed to please. Pete knew Chef L’Heureux from his previous restaurant and knew he wanted him to run the restaurant at the Ranch. There’s an excellent prime rib buffet on Saturday nights and during events. “You have to come early for this or it will sell out,” L’Heureux advises. “I also recommend reservations because it tends to get really busy.” I had the pleasure of sampling their delicious prime rib buffet on my first visit and it was superb. The buffet boasted several different salads including greens or fruit, several southern style side dishes like creamy mashed potatoes, green beans or corn, but the prime rib is the main attraction. It had been lightly smoked and cooked to perfection, an expert medium doneness. You could just faintly taste the smokiness--a new spin on prime rib. Some of the many dessert options were cobbler, cheesecake and pudding parfait.

I dined on a Saturday night and the dining room was packed. My husband and I tried their feast for two, a decadent value at $28 dollars per person. We shared an appetizer of Monterey Morsels – tender chicken breast wrapped in bacon filled with jack cheese and jalapeno, served with a ranch sauce—and they were delightful. I ordered the filet mignon with a garden salad and loaded baked potato. The filet was flawlessly cooked to medium and was so tender I couldn’t believe it. “I buy Choice Angus meats that have been grain fed for 120 days and aged a minimum of 21 days,” L’Heureux shares. For the dessert I ordered the Chocolate Lovers Sundae, a delectable gooey chocolate brownie topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and a cherry, and it was divine. This is a definitely a deal and the food will not disappoint you. One of their other popular menu items is the frog legs. “It is country-priced city food,” states the chef, as the same meal in Tulsa would cost much more. I highly recommend taking the short drive down to the ranch to hang out and eat some delicious food. Lara Friend, a dedicated wife and mother of two, is a culinary arts graduate from Oklahoma State Institute of Technology. She currently enjoys life as a homemaker and writer, and simply loves working with food.

Muddy Paws Transforms Lives This organization has PETS helping PEOPLE Article Natalie Nirk | Photography Courtney Wooden of Defining Image Photography

ore gets washed down the drain and clean in the bathtubs at Muddy Paws grooming shop than just... muddy paws. While the animals are getting cleaned up, so are the lives and hearts of many women recently released from correctional facilities. First steps for these women can be overwhelming. That’s why former inmate Christy VanCleave wants to help. Her grooming shop-turned-nonprofit—Muddy Paws—schools dog groomers and empowers women to start new lives with hope. VanCleave’s positive attitude and hard work help accomplish her goals. “I get to see mothers get their kids back, get cars, see them graduate, move on to good jobs… they’re really grateful they’ve been given a chance,” says VanCleave, a master dog groomer herself.

VanCleave’s program takes in women with criminal records (many from Turley Correctional Center) and trains them as dog groomers. Typically, 12 students train daily from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and also attend Celebrate Recovery programs. Tulsa Technology Center offers weekly Workplace Professionalism and computer classes, and Career Tech helps get birth certificates, Social Security cards, proper identification, and GEDs. “Many of these ladies have no work experience, so it’s important to help them on their feet,” says VanCleave. “We teach so much more than grooming here; we give them life skills.” Pastel blue walls and friendly smiles abound when entering the reception area of the shop, enhancing the cheerful atmosphere. “Blue is the most calming color for dogs,” VanCleave explains. The pink in the Bring Your Pet to Muddy Paws adjacent room honors Muddy Paws offers grooming, boarding, dog training, or the late Myra Worley doggie daycare services to the public at excellent pric(wife of Tulsa World’s es and discounted services for adopted dogs. quested donations to Muddy Paws in lieu of flowers upon her passing in 2013. Southern Hills Baptist Church, located across the street from Muddy Paws, gives grants for these programs. Countless volunteers and donations keep them running, too “The women at Turley Residential Center have to pay for their own hygiene and personal items, so we gladly receive donations,” says VanCleave. “We also welcome food donations, for the animals as well as the ladies.” Some volunteers help with transportation, walking dogs, or donating towels or dog food. Positive influences for the women are always welcome, too. Muddy Paws has one of the lowest recidivism rates. The have graduated 87 women, 32 shops have hired, and five ladies started their own shops. Many inmates’ goal is acceptance into the program once they are released. Each graduate receives $1,000 worth of grooming equipment to promote their success; with with 24 recent graduates, that’s no small amount. Christy Rogers is a program newcomer. She says, “I’m not scared to get out on my own now because I have a foundation to stand on.”

Student Kimberly Veach adds, “I have a new lease on life. I now have a great job making enough money--a lifesaver--and have relocated.” Caring for the animals nurtures strength and purpose in these women. “It takes a village to raise a child and it takes a community to change a felon,” VanCleave says, smiling. ost Tulsans are familiar with Kristen Glover as the spokesperson and commercial star for Jim Glover Chevrolet, where her “Dad’ll Do It.” While she is greatly involved in the marketing and customer relations of the family-owned business, Kristen is nationally renowned for a more natural HORSEpower. Kristen shows quarter horses: competing nationally in Western Pleasure riding, which evaluates the smoothness of a horse’s gait and response to the rider, and Western Riding, which focuses more on the effortless lead changing and natural mannerisms of the horse. Her horse Vital Signs Are Good won 27 All-American Quarter Horse Congress events, both amateur and professional, throughout their reign. They won the 14

American Quarter Horse Association World Show nine times and Kristen was awarded All-Around accolades. Experts agree that Vital Signs is the greatest Pleasure horse of all time. But Kristen is far from the princess who just shows up, holds on, and smiles. As she puts it, “I could’ve paid another trainer to prepare her, but I enjoyed the journey getting

there. The championships and ribbons are great, but I cherish all the work.” Kristen fell in love with horses at a very young age. At four years old, she couldn’t wait for her dad to get home from his dealership, because they’d spend their evenings together in the barn. That Christmas, Santa brought Kristen a pony (really!) and from that moment on, she was obsessed, spending as much time as possible with her pet. She later trained and showed quarter horses in 4H competitions. The hours learning the craft from trainer Jackie Krshka (Yukon, Okla.) and the thrill of competition gripped her, and at the young age of 11, Kristen won her first Congress, the largest quarter horse show in the world, held in Columbus, Ohio. that horse for twice what she bought it, and the pleasurable pastime became a business: buy a young horse, invest time in it, show off its skill, and breed or sell it when the time is right. A horse’s – and person’s, for that matter – true potential can be reached when talent is cultivated by genuine passion. Kristen won All-Around Youth two years in a row with Lopin Leauger, and then sold him to buy two-year-old Vital Signs Are Good, which she nicknamed “Lucy” for her red hue that resembled her favorite TV show, “I Love Lucy.” “I feel like God prepared me for Lucy’s talent with my prior horses,” Kristen says. “Lucy was a whole other level.” She credits Leonard and Leigh Berryhill in Talalah, who helped guide her from the ground up and helped a lot with Lucy when she was in college at OSU. The real contributor to Kristen’s “competitive edge” with Lucy was the bond created through training together, because they knew and understood each other. Most competitive riders don’t spend the hours training, but Kristen enjoys it. “Some people love running, some people love music. Playing with my horses is my happy place,” she says. “I spoil them like anyone spoils their pets – I bathe them and give them treats. I love bonding with them and spending time with them. They are happy because my training is fun. Ears up, happy.” Her unbridled success with Lucy made a huge impact on quarter horse history, but it was the journey that Kristen treasures. To change things up, Kristen took up cutting horses, where a horse and rider are judged on their ability to separate a cow from a herd. At a competition, she met her husband Wes Galyean, a professional horseman, who at 21 years old was the youngest ever to win the National Cutting Horses Association Futurity. Both the best in their fields, their common drive, competitiveness and devotion drew them together, and now keeps them on their toes together. They both still compete all over the U.S., and they have two World and Congress Champion stallions out of Lucy that they now stand at stud, breeding mares all over the world. Throw in Gracelyn, their adorable two-year-old, and – oh yeah – all those car commercials, and one wonders how she does it all. “It’s hard to find balance,” Kristen admits. “Before Gracelyn, I was at the dealership all day [writing scripts, shooting commercials, and meeting customers], and then rode in the evenings.” Now, in the morning she rides with Wes (who begins his day before the sun), most days she works from home and takes care of their daughter while he trains the horses, and events are family time. “We cherish our family time, slowing down and focusing on each other,” she says. The family of three mostly travels to competitions together by bus. “Often with my mom to help with Gracelyn,” she giggles, but explains more seriously, “Our livelihood is traveling, so home is vacation for us.” And for Kristen Glover Galyean, home is where the barn is. Even though she is locally famous for what her Dad’ll Do, Kristen is even more inspiring for her beautiful balance of devotion, tenacity, and finesse.

Sometimes it takes a village to care for the animals in our midst. Let us pull your heartstrings and then offer some suggestions for how we can all pitch in to shelter the ones in need.

Happy Endings Not every animal gets a storybook ending but these furry friends did. Article and Photography Kathy Slemp

A

sheltered animals

nimals are sometimes abandoned, neglected, lost or the owner is unable to care for them. They end up in various places where caring individuals try to find them “fur-ever” homes. The fur babies in these pages were rescued and have become valued family members. Marlee, the smallest of the bunch, visits grandma because he loves to play outside with his friends. He is a small brown poodle and was adopted from ARF, the Animal Rescue Foundation, in 2008. He’s very smart, understands most human words and will carry on conversations with you mimicking the words you say. Marlee knows all basic commands plus roll over, get the ball, time for bed and even knows “Do you want a bath?” because he will run and hide under the bed until he thinks you have forgotten about it. Oscar, the black lab, was abandoned at a hunting camp for dogs and was adopted in 2009. He loves to go hunting with his dad, ride in the car, get brushed and is gentle and patient with his little buddies. He always has a toy in his mouth as if to say it’s time to play! Thunder was adopted from OOPS, Oklahoma Orphaned Poodle Services, on the first night of the Thunder basketball playoffs in 2012. He came from a hoarding situation, was very sick and had no social skills. He’s afraid of most people but is very loving and sweet. He will let you carry him around like a newborn, loves to go for walks and car rides, and won’t eat his food until everyone else has finished eating. Jasper was hit by a car and a kind lady took him to the Catoosa Animal hospital. His mama called and offered to pay the bills (they never charged her) until his owner could be found. The animal hospital called her two weeks later and said no one had claimed him and asked if she wanted him (which she did). He is a schnauzer mix with a lot of energy but loves to give kisses and sit on your shoulder.

You are Needed Consider the benefits of volunteering at an animal shelter. Article Rachel Hodgson

F

ew things are more rewarding than having a dog thank you with a big smile and a tongue hanging out, or a cat thank you with a loud purr of happiness. You can be the recipient of this gratitude by volunteering with the shelter pets at a local shelter. If you have a passion for animals, they would love to have you join their volunteer team, and there are a multitude of ways to get started. Research the shelter first to determine what options they have available. Many shelters have special programs designed for almost every age group. Young children are often allowed to volunteer alongside their parents performing tasks like preparing Kong toys, cleaning the adoption area, or getting hands on and spending quality time with felines. Older children are often more able to interact with dogs under parents’ supervision. Often, once a child reaches the age of 16, they can volunteer solo. Working with shelter pets fosters a real sense of respsonsibility and fun, and it’s beneficial for kids and pets alike. Charitable birthday parties are another great way to help. People ask for donations of pet supplies in lieu of presents.

For seniors, there are many programs designed to connect seniors with pets to give them a little extra attention. Some shelters encourage volunteers to come walk or even jog with shelter dogs, a great exercise for both dog and person. Those who prefer cats can spend time with the felines and kittens to help socialize them and get them ready for adoption. Other things shelters look for are people willing to get hands on with mobile adoptions, dog washing, cleaning the facilities and yardwork. Volunteers who want to be on-site but not hands on with pets can help with fundraising events, adminstrative work and customer care. Or, volunteer from the comfort of your own home. Use social media platforms to showcase a favorite shelter pet. Simply sharing photos can help get them adopted. Make dog toys using strips of fleece or cat toys using feathers and bells. Everyone – young or old, onsite or at home, hands on or alongside – can volunteer at a local animal shelter and make a difference in a shelter pet’s life today.

Make a Difference Many shelters, organizations, veterinarians and volunteers go above and beyond to make a positive difference for our furry friends. A stranger saw two dogs get hit on Peoria and rushed the one that survived to the Animal Emergency Center in Tulsa. That same day, the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals posted that ARF in Bartlesville rushed a dog that had been hit by a car to the Animal Emergency Center in Tulsa and they were asking for donations to the AEC to help cover some of the $3,000 in expenses because the dog had a dislocated hip and needed to have its leg amputated. (Yes,

this is the same Animal Emergency Center that partners with our magazine). Just a couple ways we all make a difference. Local Animal Shelters Animal Rescue Foundation Tulsa Animal Welfare CityOfTulsa.org ARFTulsa.org TULSA SPCA TulsaSPCA.org

Financial Fitness plication, no qualifying and you can’t be turned down. And if you have to miss a payment it won’t affect your credit score.” The Problem

Privatised Banking Breaking down the mystery to make the financial paradigm shift

P

rivatised Banking is built on predictable results, financial control, uninterrupted compound interest, a tax-favored environment and guarantees for those with the financial resources to think outside the box. “Privatised Banking is a total financial paradigm shift, a change from one way of thinking to another for nearly all of my clients,” says Shawn Byerly, CEO of PrivatisedBanking.com. “It’s a lifelong financial process, not the latest and greatest financial product. It takes patience and self-discipline, but for those who have those traits, it pays a lifetime of benefits.” Byerly is an authorized Infinite Banking Practitioner, accredited by the Infinite Banking Institute. He is only one of 200 advisors in the country accredited to educate clients on the Privatised Banking concept. “I think a huge testament to this strategy is that the biggest banks in this country, including Bank of America, Citibank and Chase, have shoved over $122 billion of their own money into this strategy.” Privatised Banking happens to use a specially designed type of life insurance, yet its purpose has nothing to do with insuring your life. But because it’s called “life insurance,’ people assume you have to die to benefit from it. That’s simply not true.” “Few people understand the greatness of life insurance as a multifaceted financial product, which is not just a death benefit, but also a wonderful financial tool actively used by the country’s banks, corporations and wealthy individuals. These contracts are designed in a completely different manner than traditional policies. I’m confident that not 1 in 1000 financial professionals understands exactly how to design them.” The idea is to capitalize these polices over a system of 4 to 7 years and essentially “become your own banker.” Then start taking loans from the cash value to finance large purchases. All the interest you would have paid someone else comes back to an entity that you own and control. “The only way to kill this financial tool is to not pay back the loans, but unlike a traditional bank loan you are in complete control of the loan repayment schedule,” says Byerly. “There is no credit ap-

The average American pays 35 percent of their disposable income to interest payments to banks and finance institutions. “It baffles me how concerned people are about getting a high rate of return on the 5 percent of savings, yet completely disregard the 35 percent in interest that they are paying someone else. In my opinion, there is more opportunity to grow wealth by controlling the banking function and recapturing interest than there is in chasing high rates of return in the stock market and taking a lot of risk.” Many people don’t analyze how money works, but here’s the bottom line. Each time you spend your cash, you lose all the compound interest and growth potential your cash would have earned had it remained untouched. The problem is that most people don’t have a plan (nor a method) to gain access to their money while still allowing it to compound uninterrupted. “The real sizzle of Privatised Banking policies is their feature that allows you to use your money in two ways. You can borrow any money you need to live on by using loans against the money in your policy as collateral. The cash value in the policy grows as if you never touched it! However, only a handful of policies have this feature, which is why it’s crucial to work with a specialist,” explains Byerly. Business Owners

Privatised Banking is ideal for a business owner mindset. What a business owner needs is a temporary headquarters where they can direct incoming revenues until they decide the best way to use them for future growth. Privatised Banking is the ideal vehicle for cash flow management. “Most business owners are stuck between a rock and a hard place,” explains Byerly. “Access to their money is more important than rate of return, and because of that situation, their money isn’t working for them. It’s actually losing money to inflation and they are costing themselves thousands of dollars each year.” Byerly says Privatised Banking gives the business owner the best of both worlds: access to their money while offering a competitive, tax-free return that beats inflation. “I’m not saying to close your checking account. Keep it open, but only as a convenience to pay for things,” he advises. “Allocating more than 1-2 months expenses (personal or business) in a checking or savings account is bad money management.” Tax Free Retirement Income

Privatised Banking also doubles as a tax-free, reliable, predictable retirement plan. You can fund your retirement simply by changing the way your money flows. Whenever you decide to stop working, you can take loans that you don’t pay back. No 1099. Tax free. “Honestly, the comment I hear most from my clients is, “I wish I would have known about this 20 years ago,” says Byerly. Parting Thoughts

The Value of a Furry Life Words Kendra Gensemer Mathewson

I

confess. One time I spent $72 at the veterinarian’s for a sick hamster. If you know anything about hamsters, you know they get this thing called “Wet Tail.” It’s pretty much known in hamster-owner circles that Wet Tail is the kiss of death. Basically, they can stress themselves out, get an intestinal infection, diarrhea, dehydration, etc. Nobody spends money going to the vet for their hamster with Wet Tail. Except me. Charlotte wasn’t just any hamster, you see. First of all, she was our dog. Well not really, but because I didn’t want to get a dog, we somehow convinced our then-6-year-old animal-loving daughter that hamsters were a good substitute. Not to mention they really are not. They’re just smaller and less expensive. And less, you know, barky-sheddy-jumpy. So there’s that guilt factor. Then there’s the fact that even though hamsters are actually horrible pets for young kids because they bite and it hurts, Charlotte didn’t. She was the sweetest hamster ever. My daughter trained her, carried her around in the front pocket of her sweatshirt, brought her to the dinner table (she thought that was a very funny thing to do) and let her play with her Littlest Pet Shop characters as one of the gang. She also survived escape three times and inspired my daughter to write a short story series about a hamster named “Houdini.” Against all odds, i.e. after missing for days on three separate occasions, we found her one time lodged in the wall behind the dishwasher(!), watched her climb down the stairs as if to join us

E nhance

Sk i n & B ody M e d i c a l S pa

while we sat eating dinner at the dining room table, and found her making a home in one of my husband’s old PC hard drives that was partially open in his office. So when our dear Houdini, I mean Charlotte, came down with the dreaded Wet Tail, we packed her up in a box and found ourselves waiting patiently to be seen by the vet who kindly treated her like the treasure she was, handed me a syringe with meds and billed me $72, with a wise glance and a smile. Hours later I sat on the floor of the bathroom next to my daughter. We’d administered the prescribed doses, but watched our precious friend slowly fading away in the palm of my daughter’s sweet little hand that had stroked and played with her fluffy friend in life, and now held her in death. Then we cried and buried her in the back yard, and celebrated her life and all the funny memories we had of her. Sometimes life, no matter how small or fleeting, is worth $72. Rest in peace, Charlotte Houdini Hamster. (By the way, I confess my daughter is now 17 and we did finally get her a dog. And, we’ve spent a whole lot more than $72 at the vet…)
