GETTING FIT WITH W O CROSSFIT TOWSON
R K
CROSSFIT TOWSON’S SELF-DESCRIBED SPECIALTY IS NOT SPECIALIZING. While on the surface that may not make much sense, it all boils down to what the coaches and participants are trying to create—a deliberate attempt at optimizing physical competence in 10 different recognized fitness domains by using weightlifting, running and gymnastics components. Darin Winick describes the popular exercise fitness program as constantly varied functional movements at high intensity. Each one-hour class at the Towson “box,” as it is known, consists of a strength or skill portion in which a coach demonstrates move-

ments and personally assists the athletes in performing them. Then, the class will execute the “workout of the day” or “WOD.” The WOD may be performed for a set amount of time or a specific number of rounds/repetitions. Moves could include push-ups, pull-ups, advanced calisthenics, lifting heavy objects, jumping over obstacles and simple movements. “We want to take advantage of the body’s natural movements,” says Darin, who calls his workout programming “raw by design,” done at relatively high intensity in an attempt to push the body to get an adaptive response. He is also a big proponent of men lifting weights because, “It is shown to trigger an increase in testosterone and human growth hormone.” And stronger, he says, is better.

MEET FOUR LOCAL MOVERS AND SHAKERS
T h e P h i l a n t h r o p i st Andrew Buerger - Co-founder, B’more Organic In 2008, Andrew Buerger’s sister, Jodi, was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. “I looked around the world and said ‘Okay, where are they doing the best research?’” Andrew says. He discovered that Johns Hopkins was leading the way in immunotherapy, the use of the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. But gaps in funding had slowed progress, so he and his wife, Jennifer, started a nonprofit, Jodi’s Climb for Hope, which has since donated more than $750,000 to Johns Hopkins for cancer research. “We climb mountains around the world, raising money for breast cancer research,” he says. On a trip to Iceland, they were served a yogurt-like food for breakfast. Being lactose intolerant, he was hesitant to try it. “But I’m climbing a mountain. I gotta eat something,” he says. He added a little to his granola and felt great. The next day he tried a little more. He learned that skyr, as it’s called, is “technically a form of cheese and all the probiotics consume the lactose,” he says. When they returned from their trip, he and Jennifer started their own skyr company, B’more Organic, at first selling their product to stores out of the trunk of their car. Since founding the company in 2010, it has grown rapidly; its products are now sold in more than 3,000 stores nationwide, and in 2017, Inc. magazine ranked it one of the fastest-growing food and beverage companies in the U.S. B’more Organic continues to give 1 percent of sales to Jodi’s Climb for Hope. “If I can get Americans to eat better, I can help lower the chance of certain diseases in this country,” he says. “That’s my passion and mission in life.”

The Entrepreneur Tim Bojanowski - CEO, Zest Social Media At a time when businesses were closing in masses during the height of the Great Recession, Tim Bojanowski dropped out of college for a second time to start a company. “I think at some point everyone dreams of that moment of discovery or invention that catapults into business fortunes,” the president of Zest Social Media Solutions says. “Ours was more of a basic observation that there was no supply for what we suspected was going to be an exploding demand for help.” After filing for an LLC with his now-wife Ali Lemon, Maryland’s first social media agency was born. Zest is now the largest digital media marketing firm in Towson, with a client list that includes many of Baltimore’s best-known companies, including Under Armour, BGE and the Law Offices of Peter Angelos. “We’re most proud of what the company has allowed us to do in support of the community,” he says. “Zest has allowed us to create dozens of jobs, help hundreds of small businesses and support countless charities that make our community thrive.” A lifelong Towsonite, Bojanowski graduated from Towson High School, attended Towson University and is president of the Towson Chamber of Commerce. He spends much of his free time volunteering for various education and workforce development around the community. He was recently elected president of the Education Foundation for Baltimore County Public Schools. If you don’t see him wandering around Towson during the day, odds are you’ll find the 28-year-old father of two (with one on the way) out on the golf course, talking up Towson, and all it has to offer.
The TEACHER
Aaron Velky — Founder, Ortus Academy “I’ve traveled a lot, but I’ve always come back to Baltimore,” says Aaron Velky, the
president and co-founder of Ortus Academy in Towson. He grew up in Prince George’s County and attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County, earning a degree in financial economics in 2009. At the time, jobs in the business sector were hard to come by, and he found himself working in apartment management. When he and a buddy heard that the students at a local school were struggling in math, they decided to help, creating Ortus Academy, an organization that strengthens math skills through financial literacy. Its flagship program, Money Club, is a highly-interactive 10-session introductory course for sixth through ninth graders, covering earning, saving, debt, credit, budgeting and investment. “We’re trying to duplicate real-world experience without the risk, the consequences, or the wait,” he says. Having already delivered the program to hundreds of local students, Ortus is now being approached by schools and summer camps in multiple states. And, in 2020, they will partner with an entire school district to bring the program to more than 10,000 students. When he’s not extolling the virtues of fiscal responsibility, he can be found coaching youth soccer for the Pipeline Soccer Club, where he also plays on the men’s team. “Towson’s been really good to me,” he says. “It is blossoming with opportunity for young and aspiring entrepreneurs!”

MEN TO WATCH
(CON TI N U ED)
The CEO
Dr. Thomas Smyth - CEO, University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center “Towson is my hometown,” says Dr. Thomas Smyth, the current president and CEO of University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. “There's a lot to love about the area. It's a phenomenal community and just a very comfortable, wonderful place to live.” Smyth, who lives in Towson with his wife and three sons, was born and raised here. After graduating from Calvert Hall College, he went on to Princeton University, and then attended Johns Hopkins Medical School. Following the completion of his residency at Stanford, he returned to Maryland in 1992 to join his father’s urology practice, which he later took over. It eventually evolved into Chesapeake Urology Associates. When he was tapped as the new CEO of St. Joseph Medical Center in 2016, it was a homecoming of sorts. As a boy, he had periodically accompanied his father on his rounds, and he later interned there as a high school student. "We're in the middle of a campaign ... to completely redesign our surgical services area ... to just completely redesign the experience for the patient," he says. "And when this is done, the patients that walk into this hospital will get an experience that I think will be unlike any other hospital around."" In his “spare” time, Smyth is committed to giving back to the community. “I come from a family that taught me and trained me to be philanthropic and to give back,” he says. He currently sits on the boards of the Y of Central Maryland, the Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools and his alma mater, Calvert Hall. “I might tend to overextend myself just a bit,” he says with a smile.

SCHOOL DESCEND ON CHARM CITY FOR A WEEKEND OF BROTHERLY BONDING, MAKE SURE THAT, AS THE HOST, YOU PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS. Sure, there are hundreds of dive bars and chain restaurants that’ll take you back to your days at the “U,” but now that you’re all grown up, it’s time to broaden your horizons. Short on ideas? Not to worry. Here are a few suggestions to get you started on planning the ultimate guys’ weekend. Let the bonding begin!
01.
CENTER FIELD ROOF DECK AT CAMDEN YARDS Nothing screams Baltimore like a night at "the

Yard." So, grab your crew, don your orange and black, and get ready to cheer on the O’s. While there’s no shortage of great seats at Camden Yards, we’re partial to the rail seats in the Center Field Roof Deck, where where you can kick back and catch up with your buds, and you’re never more than a few steps away from a refill. TIP: The stools on the rail overlooking the field offer a great vantage point to watch the game, but you can’t access them without the proper tickets. (It gets complicated, but trust us, it’s worth it.) Tickets for these seats are only available for the upcoming homestand. Purchase tickets on the first day of the road trip preceding the homestand you want to attend and you’ll be good to go. Prices range from $28-54, depending on who the Birds are playing. MLB.com
02. GREYSTONE GOLF COURSE Just 20 miles up Interstate 83 from Towson lies Greystone Golf Course, one of the finest, most picturesque public courses in the area. Set in a valley and surrounded by sprawling farms, this 18-hole championship course was designed by Joe Lee, the same course architect who designed the famed Blue Monster at Doral, and the spectacular courses at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Originally built in the 1970s as a private club, and taken over by Baltimore County Golf in 2007, this is a country club-caliber course without the country club prices. Greens fees in high season range from $59-$76 for the general public, or $52-$69 for those with the Advantage Card, which gives you discounts at all five of the County’s courses. After your day on the links, head back to the clubhouse for a cold beer and a burger, and savor the sweeping views from the outside deck. GreystoneMDGolf.com
03. WAVERLY BREWING COMPANY Tucked under the Jones Falls Expressway in Woodberry-Hampden, this is the ideal spot to kick back and savor some of Baltimore’s tastiest and most imaginative craft brews. Walk inside this compact, repurposed industrial building, and you’ll find yourself in a rustic tap room that The Baltimore Sun recently named the city’s best. Paneled with salvaged barn board and decorated with a hodge-podge of old sports memorabilia, hunting trophies and vintage photos, you’ll feel more like you’ve entered a cabin in the hill country than an urban beer hall. Waverly puts out small batches of its five mainstay beers and rounds out its lineup by introducing a new flavor every few weeks. At any given time, they have up to 14 beers on tap, of which a half dozen are likely to have been brewed on-site. Many of their small batches sell out within a few days, and you can only buy them on-site. Try the Local Oyster Stout or order a flight of four and sample the broader portfolio. Picnic tables and corn hole are set up outside, and food is available from local restaurants that set up and serve on a rotating basis. WaverlyBrewingCompany.com
04.
SAGAMORE DISTILLERY AND RYE STREET TAVERN When Under Armour founder Kevin
Plank announced he was going into the whiskey business, smart money was on his succeeding. And succeed he has. Opened in 2016, his Baltimore-based Sagamore Spirit is already winning accolades for its traditional rye whiskeys, and building a loyal fanbase among enthusiasts. You can tour the company’s gleaming new waterfront distillery to get a firsthand look at the production process and sample some of their award-winning whiskeys. SagamoreSpirit.com After your tour, grab some swag in the gift shop, then head next door to the recently opened Rye Street Tavern, where the menu features fare prepared with locally grown ingredients, farm-raised meats and sustainable seafood. The trendy two-story space offers indoor and outdoor dining, live entertainment and views of the Patapsco River. As the sun sets on a memorable weekend, kick back with your posse, order a round of cocktails and start planning your next big adventure. RyeStreetTavern.com

advancements are inevitable. Bowen contends that students must leave Goucher “prepared for the jobs of the future— some of which haven’t even been invented yet.” To do that, he says, they must become lifelong learners who can think critically. Bowen, who earlier this year was

But it’s not what they need. According to Bowen, “Singles are the loneliest place on campus, and they have the lowest graduation rates.”

That’s why Goucher used nudge-theory behavioral science when building its new First-Year Village. The residence halls contain doubles that are on the smaller side, with huge lounges and kitchens on every floor to encourage students to socialize. It seems to be working. So far, “the students who live there appear to be more successful,” Bowen says. The college used the same approach when designing its new dining hall. Students increasingly want to-go options so they can eat in their rooms, alone with their computers, so the college put the eat-in dining hall in the center of campus, and is considering how to nudge students to eat a certain number of meals there. As Bowen points out, “What’s the point of having a diverse campus with students from over 30 different countries and many different states if you’re not going to help them interact?” The personal touch matters, too. Bowen, who lives on campus with his wife, Kimberly, and their two dogs and cat, organizes weekly soccer games that anyone can join. Students can also sign out one of their dogs for walks—as long as they don’t feed them. (One dog came home covered in Doritos dust.) CAREER Every college has a career center, but most students avoid them. Goucher decided it needed not only a career center but also a career program. Called the Goucher Advantage, it will debut next year and students will be required to take four years of its programming. They will be eased in, however. “We don’t want to scare students by saying, ‘Hi, welcome to college, let’s talk about your job,’” Bowen says. “Instead, let’s talk about self-discovery. Let’s talk about who you are as a person, what motivates you.” First-years will do writing assignments around these questions, and, in their sophomore year, they will start writing cover letters, build an e-portfolio and apply for internships. They will also join a career community, loosely based on their interests, consisting of six to eight students, alumni and possibly college staff and faculty members, as well. The groups will meet regularly to talk and ask questions. Hands-on experience and networking are essential. Goucher’s Community-Based Learning Office supports students working in the Towson community with local elementary schools, senior centers and neighborhood associations. The Goucher College Business Circle also brings local business and education leaders together, giving students the opportunity to meet and hear from top executives in their fields. The idea is to expose students to different types of jobs and careers—all it takes is a little nudge, and maybe a glass of water, too.
