Art is all around us. A

rt really is all around us. It is in the messy stick figures our kids proudly bring home from school. It is in the art we admire at local craft shows. It is in the beauty of the bright spring days March has in store for us. The trick is to open our eyes to the art of life. This month, we are featuring stories that showcase how the arts are alive and kicking in our neighborhoods. From an innovative live music program at Nickajack Elementary School, to the locally-created masterpieces available at Vinings Gallery, to the professional crew and actors working their craft in the "Hollywood of the South," art is everywhere in Vinings. Nickajack PTA president Are you interested in starting or extending your art and I at Live Music Fridays. collection? Check out the tips in "Art Collecting for Beginners." For those who feel music is the artistic expression of choice for themselves or their children, read about all the unique offerings at The Music Studio at Vinings. And for those moms and dads who are knee deep in their summer camp planning, be sure to read "Choosing the Right Overnight Camp" first. March is a season of renewal and my wish for you is to find yourselves refreshed, restored, and reawakened to the beauty all around you. Have a happy St. Patrick's Day and Easter too. Until next month, I'll be behind you in line at Target, on swing pushing duty at TaylorBrawner Park, or romping through the fields at several area Easter Egg hunts.

e’ve all heard the alarming statistics of how government funding has been substantially slashed or removed completely from music programs in many public schools across the country. And, unfortunately, this loss often spreads far beyond a school’s chorus room. DoSomething.org found that students who don’t have a music-related extracurricular activity while in school are less likely to have a comparable level of enhanced critical thinking skills and motivation to pursue higher education as children who are actively engaged in a musical outlet. To combat this statistic, however, The Music Studio at Vinings is successfully providing music-related education to schools, families, and individuals to help to fill the void that the government’s modified funding is leaving behind. “We are excited to support our local schools with sponsorships and in-school programming,” says The Music Studio at Vinings marketing director, Kristen Sudduth. “We are rolling out Café Jam as a free program to schools throughout their lunch periods. Our teachers bring in various instruments and offer a sing-a-long, instruments information, and Q&A with students. We have found that students love the music and opportunity to talk with professional musicians, and the schools love the additional enrichment for students during a normally hectic part of their day.” Aside from its in-school series, this Vinings staple is working to create well-rounded individuals, musically, from birth to adulthood. Thus, from classes for newborns to private instrument-based lessons for elementary school students, The Music Studio at Vinings offers a spectrum of engaging experiences for all seeking a greater connection to music. Studio Director Cecilia Courtnay Rowe says that by offering lessons seven days a week as well as in-home and in-studio lessons, they have the ability to fit into most CONTINUED >

schedules. She is pleased to offer lessons in piano, drums, guitar/ ukulele, voice, violin, and more to the Atlanta community. And while The Music Studio at Vinings seems to always be buzzing with activity, this family-owned business has humble roots that date back to 1989 when co-founder Marilyn Courtnay created the business’ vision by offering one service — in-home piano lessons to children. Quickly, Courtnay’s roster of customers increased significantly. Over the years, it became clear there was a need for additional teachers as well as an opportunity to offer lessons on more instruments, Courtnay and Rowe Corporation was founded in response to customers needs. In 2011, The Music Studio at Vinings opened on South Atlanta Road, providing private music lessons in a studio setting. The business at the studio has grown so quickly in the past four years it has already expanded twice to meet the demand for music education in the area. Sudduth is excited about the future of The Music Studio. “The phenomenal growth that we have experienced is evidence that the Smyrna/Vinings community recognizes the value of music lessons. The Music Studio at Vinings and Courtnay and Rowe In-Home Music Lessons are built on a tradition of excellence that will carry us into the future.”

The Music Studio at Vinings offers lessons in piano, guitar, voice, drums, strings (including cello) and many other instruments. They also offer enrichment classes such as art, dance, chess, "Music Together" infant to Pre-K music program and educational music workshops. With 25 Studio music teachers, all with either college training and/or professional performance experience, there is sure to be the right teacher to meet each student's individual needs. They are also the only music studio in the area that offers music lessons seven days a week, from early morning to late at night to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. For those who homeschool or for adults who have a flexible daytime schedule, The Music Studio at Vinings offers discounted music lessons from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Vinings Lifestyle | March 2016

here isn’t much in our world that isn’t constantly evolving into a newer and different version of itself. Similarly, since its early days, art has certainly been an avenue that follows this rule, and contemporary multimedia artist Matthew White has fully embraced this phenomenon in his work — whereby securing a comfortable place on Atlanta’s radar as an artist to watch. Over the past few years, the Douglasville native, and now Smyrna resident, has found a niche in the art realm with his out-of-the-box manipulation of modern art forms. As a result, his various series, from #Hashtag to 121 Doorways, illustrate differing takes on our progressing world, leaving each series unlike the last. White, who characterizes himself as being a cross-disciplinary artist, mixes traditional forms of art materials, including acrylic paint and canvas, with technology — another ever-changing medium — including digital components from around the Web (think social media sites). “When making art, there is almost always a digital aspect to my process. My work is seldom purely digital or non-digital. I gather materials and inspiration everywhere – sound, trash, hardware stores, garage sales, and Twitter, for example. I capture digital images. I manipulate and print them. When I realized that ‘being an artist’ isn’t at all about being the tortured soul that sits isolated in a studio, I realized that inspiration can come from anywhere.”

"Outside the Ballroom"

"Hideous Night"

“The gathering of those materials, the materials themselves, the subject matter, and the techniques all mirror our cut and paste culture,” says the Oglethorpe University graduate, who was recently featured in Art Takes Miami and Fresh Paint Magazine. Once his creations are finished, White has not hesitated to get them in front of an audience, which has garnered him a growing presence in Atlanta’s art scene. For instance, his most recent series, #StopInfluenceNow, was on display at Ponce City Market last summer. Similarly, his Moon Phase series showed at King Plow Arts Center in 2011. Thus, it should be no surprise that the digital marketing and mobile tech enthusiast is a member of the Executive Committee of Atlanta Contemporary’s Board of Directors (a nonprofit and non-collecting institution that supports new and seasoned artists), a Hambidge Fellow since March 2015 (a residency program that provides sanctuary in the North Georgia mountains to creative individuals seeking to focus on new projects), and a regular contributor to the invitation-only auctions supporting the Hambidge Center and Art Papers nonprofits. Outside of engaging in group and solo pop-up shows to spread the word about his art, White, who first began regularly making visual works while in his early 20's, currently calls TheMWGallery.com home to his art work. Furthermore, as White continues to get deeper into the art arena, especially locally, he is making plans to create more collaborations in spaces that are both virtual and brick-and-mortar.

Hollywood of the South Locals contributing to explosive growth in film and TV in Atlanta

Vinings Lifestyle | March 2016

A

tlanta is affectionately known as the “Hollywood of the South” and there’s good reason for that

nickname. If you’ve spent any time around the city of Atlanta, you’ve become acquainted with the ubiquitous yellow signs posted on street corners with mysterious abbreviations printed in large black lettering. You’ve probably heard about Tyler Perry purchasing the old GM plant in Doraville and his plans to build another mega movie studio. And most area residents have seen at least one of The Walking Dead around town. Over 140 films and television shows have been shot in Atlanta since 2008, and production companies have spent around $1.7 billion on projects in 2015. From actors to directors, screen writers to special effects artists, Atlanta is full of individuals making the southern film scene possible. Check out some area residents helping to put the tinsel in the southern version of Tinsel Town.

GUY D’ALEMA – PHOTOGRAPHER

Long before Atlanta became the hottest filming location in the south, Guy D’Alema was photographing everyone in the entertainment industry. as Presidents Ronald Regan, George Bush, and Jimmy Carter. By 1990 D’Alema was firmly ensconced in both TV and film. He has photographed sets including "Vampire Diaries," "In the Heat of the Night," "The Duff," "ATL," and one of the newest shows to film in Atlanta, BET's "Zoe Ever After." ISSAIAH MCCRAY - ACTOR AND MODEL

Thirteen-year-old Issaiah has been modeling since the age of 5 and was previously a Wilhelmina Kid in Miami prior to his family's move to Smyrna two years ago. He was recently on set shooting for the film "Madea's Halloween" and was chosen to audition for Tupac's "All Eyez on Me" biopic. Issaiah has been featured in international magazines such as "New Look" and "Terranova Italy," and will be in the movie "The 5th Wave" scheduled for release in 2016. Outside of acting, Issaiah is a Campbell Middle School honor roll student who loves football. He even received the award for Defensive MVP of the year for Campbell Middle School's 8th grade football team for the 2015 season. CHUCK THOMAS – SCREENWRITER

A writer since his college days, Chuck Thomas completed his first film script in 2006. The film, "Consumed," was shot by Atlanta director Dustin Jacobs as his thesis. In the years since, Thomas has written for Tony Kaye ("American History X"), collaborated with Zombie Cat Productions, and produced a TV pilot that featured actors from "The Walking Dead," "Constantine," and "Halt & Catch Fire." In 2014, Thomas, a longtime Smyran resident, started the Atlanta Film Chat podcast where directors, actors, producers, costumers, and more discuss their projects and life in the Atlanta film scene. Chuck has had notable features including "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" and "The Hunger Games." ROB DISNER – SOUND ENGINEER

Rob Disner began his career in Los Angeles, working in recording studios. His first job was as a sound engineer on Michael Jackson's "Dangerous" album. He eventually made the transition to freelance engineering and then found himself doing audio work for both film and television. After a short break from the industry, Disner moved to Atlanta, where he found friendly crews and lots of work. Since then he has worked on shows including "The Walking Dead" and "The Great Christmas Light Fight" as well as several TV and film projects set for release this year. MARYELLE ST. CLARE – JACK OF ALL TRADES

Vinings resident, Maryelle St. Claire, began her stint in the film industry in 2014 after the devastating loss of both her brother and

mother. She left corporate America and launched herself into the film industry. Unsure of the exact role she wanted to play in the business, she took every job offered, from photographer to production assistant to makeup artist. She then attended the Georgia Production Partnership’s PA Bootcamp where she officially learned the ropes by working as both crew and actress in more than 30 productions, including commercials and feature films. Maryelle loves working in the film industry in Atlanta and is having the time of her life. In a relatively short time, the Atlanta television and film scene has grown exponentially, generating more than $6 billion in Georgia’s economy in 2015 alone. In 2016, the industry is expected to develop even more, guaranteeing Georgia a top spot on the list of ideal filming locations for years to come.

RT COLLECTING

FOR BEGINNERS: Tips for Starting Your Collection ARTICLE KENDRA PIERSON PHOTOGRAPHY KIMBERLY DEJANOVICH-RYAN

F

or those looking to build an art collection and unsure where to begin, a visit to an art gallery should be your first stop. Luckily for those in the Vinings area, Vinings Gallery is a fantastic resource. Vinings Gallery offers art lovers access to internationally and nationally-recognized artists without traveling to bigger cities across the world. According to Gary Handler, co-owner of Vinings Gallery, the first thought for building a collection is “recognizing that collecting should be a journey over time.” He goes on to say most collections are not built in one purchase, but rather evolve and expand as the collector’s taste change and their knowledge of art grows. The actual first step in building a collection will vary. Many times people will begin by walking into a gallery and meet with the staff to determine what type of art they carry. A new collector needs to take the time to become familiar with their local art market and to determine personal preferences. Another method to start an art collection can include buying a piece at a festival or directly from an artist. However you begin, start with pieces you are passionate about. “Buy a piece because you love it. Then let’s get it home and find a place on the wall.” Using personal taste as a guiding point also allows for collectors to enter at any price point. Working with either your local gallery or artists, collectors can begin stepping out of their comfort zone and find beautiful works by nationally or locally-recognized artists at most budget levels. One benefit of partnering with a gallery such as the Vinings Gallery is their staff builds a relationship with clients to help find pieces that move the client after learning their personal taste and budget. The staff at Vinings Gallery takes pride in turning customers into friends through their high levels of customer service. They also bring artists from around the world into the gallery for monthly gallery events, so local collectors have the opportunity to learn more about the artists and their works and to connect with their personal favorite pieces. ART COLLECTING (CON TI N U ED)

Once a collector has made the investment for a work of art, enhancing purchases with custom framing and design is the final step before adding to the home collection. Vinings Gallery offers these services onsite through the design and framing section led by co-owner Denard Stalling. Mr. Stalling is an accomplished artist himself whose art can also be found on the gallery walls. He approaches the selection of the framing as a compliment and extension of the piece itself. With selecting either your first piece of a collection or your most recent, the goal should always be the same. It is a very simple idea. Just look for a piece that makes you smile when you see it on the wall.

The staff at Vinings Gallery loves helping both new and experienced art collectors.

PEDIATRIC DENTIST, DR. JAHA HOWARD, MAKES A DIFFERENCE ONE CHILD AT A TIME

ARTICLE LAURA MILLER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

hile in dental school at Howard University, Dr. Jaha Howard had an epiphany. “After completing a rotation in pediatric dentistry, I realized that I had the unique opportunity to have a positive impact on kids who were forming habits that they would carry for a lifetime.” And the rest was history. Dr. Howard owns A+ Pediatric Dentistry of Atlanta and has a unique approach to treating children’s teeth. Many children are frightened of the dentist, and many more don’t understand the importance of keeping a healthy mouth. Dr. Howard and his associates aim to change those facts by creating a different type of dentist office. “Our team makes it a point to find ways to engage our patients and their families,” Dr. Howard says. His website, AtlantaKidSmiles.com, features interactive games, quizzes, and jokes that make children feel happy and comfortable. He even got his team together to shoot a fun YouTube video, Straight Outta Vinings which was a viral hit with patients and the community alike. “My A+ team works so hard for our patients,” Dr. Howard explains. “We like to make sure that we play just as hard. We want to show the entire city that the dental experience can genuinely be a fun and exciting time for all.” Dr. Howard has taken his passion to better the lives of our community to a new level with the announcement of his run for State Senate for District 6. His campaign grew out of a sincere desire to empower ordinary people to do extraordinary things. He wants to engage with families who are searching for a better way to improve our community, especially in the realm of education. When asked why he decided to run for office, Dr. Howard had a simple but authentic answer. "It's personal for me. I'm a husband, a dad of three young children, an education advocate, and a business owner. I'm digging in and prepared to fight for our area and our state to be the best." 40

Inspired By Lunch becomes a joyful time during Live Music Fridays.

"Music Belongs in Our Schools!"

T

he Nickajack Elementary School PTA president and father of a 5th grader had

a recurring thought that would not leave him: "Music belongs in our schools!" He worked on many initiatives over the years but kept coming back to how he could encourage a love of music for students, because he knows music does belong in our schools. This year it hit him. Bring live music to lunch! It's already noisy so he figured it would be a good

idea to give the kids some music to liven up their lunch period and even get the toes of the lunch room workers tapping. Beverly Lloyd, principal of Nickajack Elementary, loved the idea immediately and Live Music Fridays was born. Since September, a live musical act is brought in each Friday. Parents are encouraged to eat lunch with their children so they too can enjoy the sounds.

VL: WHAT ARE LIVE MUSIC FRIDAYS? SR: From 10:20 a.m. to 1:01 p.m. all 1,000 Nickajack Elementary

Schools students, grades Pre-K to 5, cycle through the lunch room. On Fridays, musicians of all types are scheduled to come in, play their instruments and engage children during their lunch period. VL: HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR LIVE MUSIC FRIDAYS? SR: When teachers, staff, administrators and parents all expressed

frustration at the noise level in the lunch room, it occurred to me that it might be a better strategy to get the children engaged in something positive, such as listening to, watching and enjoying live music demonstrations. They are children, ages 3-11, and battles over energy containment often seem futile. However, they do need to eat and learn to be responsible, respectful and clean. I envisioned Nickajack parents, relatives or local music teachers playing their instruments to rows of students, intrigued by the sounds that fill the cafeteria. VL: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THIS PROGRAM TO THE STUDENTS? SR: There are so many benefits. The most important ones include

positive stimulation, fascination, aspiration, happiness and joy. Plus, it is fun!

Nickajack principal Beverly Lloyd poses along with vice principals Shannon Hooker and Loretta Tennison, student services administrator, Ginger McDowell, and PTA president Seth Rubenstein.

VL: WHO HAS PARTICIPATED IN THIS PROGRAM? SR: We have been thrilled to include Campbell High School,

Pebblebrook High School, Campbell Middle School, teachers from The Music Studio at Vinings, Maestro Benjamin Padilla, and Nickajack grandfather, Tom Bratton, so far. But there are still Fridays available in 2016. We'd love to see more community members. I'm even hoping

Benjamin Padilla is a music teacher and has visited Nickajack several times during their Live Music Fridays. (facebook.com/PadkeSchoolofMusic).

to get some officers in the Smyrna Police Department who would be great for our program. VL: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO HAVE LIVE MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS? SR: When the Campbell High School Quintet, lead by Mark Pulley,

came to Nickajack with two alumni students, I was thrilled this program was getting off the ground. And then they lifted their bows and started playing the most beautiful music and I was overwhelmed with emotion. My eyes teared up seeing how engaged the children could be. Each Friday, I watch these adorable children wiggle to the beat, wave their hands in the air, smile and tap their feet to all different kinds of music. I want the kids to love their school, to know they are special enough for stuff like this. Some kids may simply appreciate music in ways they never had before - and for others, this just might be that spark to encourage a future in music. Wouldn't that be fantastic? “A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike.” – John Steinbeck

At The SAE School, teachers lead each student on their own personal journey of self-discovery. It is not enough to simply teach. Our educational vision is the discovery of the individual and the nurturing of unique strengths and interests, the tailoring of a journey that will take the student further than even they could have imagined. Our mission and our responsibility is to make sure they are ready when they get there. Come and experience Georgia’s only true Project Based Learning school to explore where your own journey may take you.

OPEN ENROLLMENT: Now accepting Preschool - 11th grade applications for 2016-17.

“to discover and nurture each child’s journey.”

ocated in Olde Ivy Village, Real Subs Cafe features fresh organic, all-natural subs, wraps and salads made, along with

gluten-free items. Even the soft drinks are organic with flavors such as cherry cream, lemongrass and ginger beer. For a unique drink, be sure to visit the Detox Bar that offers reverse osmosis waters with a variety of detoxing ingredients. Real Subs Cafe is a new “fast-serve” restaurant concept that doesn't compromise on quality. They believe that great flavor and healthy eating start and end with the best ingredients. Therefore, they use only the very best organic produce, certified organic and all-natural, bulk deli meats which are free from antibiotics

and added nitrates/nitrites, hormone-free cheeses, and organic/ all-natural condiments. Their bulk meats and cheeses are sliced fresh everyday, all-day, and their wide variety of foods are made to be as delicious as they are healthy. “I want people to come in, quickly order anything off the menu — either take-out or eat-in — and know they are putting nothing bad in their bodies without the exception of maybe a little cane sugar in their drinks,” says Tom Doty, owner of Real Subs Café. “That is our basic premise.” For those that think eating healthy is difficult and expensive, Real Subs Cafe wants you to think again! They have a wide variety of healthy and tasty subs and wraps that fit nearly every budget. Be sure to check out their weekly promotions and online coupons for even more savings.
