LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year, West Bloomfield! It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow/learn from and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority– or, at least, what should be. Some New Year’s resolutions center around spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community-focused, such as being more intentional about finding ways to help people in need. Given the popularity of health and exercise every January though, we dedicated this issue to physical fitness, eating right and overall wellness. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things to making a daily decision to act on them. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022! Thanks for reading,

GUMMY SMILE? CROWN LENGTHENING IS A VERY COMMON PROCEDURE TO COSMETICALLY TREAT A ‘GUMMY’ SMILE. DATA SHOWS THAT THE SMILE IS OFTEN THE FIRST THING PEOPLE NOTICE ABOUT ANOTHER PERSON.
SOME MAY THINK THAT THEIR TEETH APPEAR SHORT, BUT THEY ARE ACTUALLY THE PROPER SIZE!
Having a good smile can not only make someone look more attractive but can also have an impact on many other aspects of a person’s life, including their personal and professional relationships.
They only appear short or tiny because they are covered with excessive gum tissue. This can be fixed by removing the excess tissue to expose more of the tooth structure. The tissue can also be reshaped to allow for a more even gum line.
CROWN LENGTHENING IS ALSO BENEFICIAL TO PATIENT HEALTH. Gums that extend too far over a natural tooth can be more difficult to clean. A lengthened crown is more hygienic and easier to clean, reducing the chances of gum disease later on.
ALL OF THESES BENEFITS CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH THE CROWN LENGTHENING PROCEDURE!
Crown lengthening is performed in a periodontist’s office under local anesthetic. During the procedure, the surgeon gently removes gum tissues and bone to expose the underlying tooth.
IT’S YOUR MOUTH...YOUR HEALTH.

INSPIRING A LOVE OF EXERCISE “MR. RALPH” THOMPKINS SHARES THE STORY BEHIND S.W.A.G AND THE GYM’S CURRENT HAPPENINGS.
12
G E T ACT IV E | ED U CATION
36-year-old Ralph Thompkins is the owner of S.W.A.G Kids Gym, which was founded in August 2019 and located at 7306 Haggerty Road in West Bloomfield. Every day, he and his staff work hard to not only build good health and self-confidence in youth ages 10 months through 13 years but simultaneously foster a passion for physical activity within them, as well. For more information, visit swagkidsgym.com.
MR. RALPH, WHAT FUELED YOUR DECISION TO STUDY EDUCATION IN COLLEGE? I always had great teachers and coaches growing up, especially at Harrison High School [in Farmington Hills], and wanted to have the opportunity to give back what I received from them.
YOU USED TO WORK AT THE LITTLE GYM BEFORE YOU OPENED S.W.A.G. WHAT MADE YOU VEER AWAY FROM TEACHING IN THE TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM SETTING? I actually started teaching in a middle school in Detroit, but it closed down. My plan and purpose was to stay in the traditional realm of education, but at the time, it was really hard to get a job. I looked everywhere for something in the physical education world, and that’s when I found The Little Gym, which led me to what I’m doing now.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN S.W.A.G? I loved a lot of what The Little Gym offered, but I felt like they fell short on how to keep older kids coming in. They did not really have the space and programming to offer what the older kids would want and be interested in. So, since I really wanted to create opportunities for kids older than the age of five, I decided to open S.W.A.G, which is a bigger space where I have the ability to offer more creative programming. I still have little ones coming in, but I also have 13-year-olds enjoying it, too.
WHY WEST BLOOMFIELD, SPECIFICALLY?
R ALPH THOMPKINS
First of all, I love the community. Plus, it was super important to me to have an opportunity to potentially work with the families I did in the past, and it was just a matter of finding the right space. It’s truly been everything I envisioned it to be.
WHAT DOES S.W.A.G OFFER YOUTH? It offers kids of all ages an opportunity to fall in love with the concept of exercise. A love, a guide and a great understanding for exercise through movement. Of course we do gymnastics, but the biggest thing we do here is create new opportunities for play through the use of obstacle CONTINUED >

courses. Every time they come in, kids can expect a new experience and also new challenges. We offer a ton of versatility for kids to move in different ways, no matter their age.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL S.W.A.G OFFERS PARENTS? We actually do host adult events here, which was the sector I wasn’t able to test out before but wanted to get into. So far, we’ve had five wine tastings, two dance parties and a karaoke night. We even have a few adult clients who do exercise training here.
WHY THE NAME “S.W.A.G”? I wanted something super catchy but also futuristic. It’s a name that describes what we can do: Sports, Workouts and Gymnastics. Little kids can remember it, but it’s still something an older kid feels good about saying.

YOU RECENTLY MADE UPDATES TO YOUR MEMBERSHIP PLANS. WHAT MEMBERSHIP PLANS DO YOU CURRENTLY OFFER? We have two membership types: our Classic Membership for $50, which includes unlimited classes and a free T-Shirt, and for $70, you can get the Gold Membership, which includes unlimited classes and shirts but also other perks like a sibling discount, birthday package discount, open gym perks and more. Class sign-up is on a firstcome, first-served basis, but it’s nice because you are able to come as much as you want within the six days a week we offer classes. Open gyms take place at varied times on weekends when we don’t have birthday parties.
HOW DO YOU ENVISION S.W.A.G IN THE FUTURE? After the pandemic, all I want is to be uninterrupted! But really we just want to be as expansive as we can in our offerings and continue being more than just gym classes. We wish to be known as an entertainment center that can host any kind of event for kids or adults alike. And of course, like every business owner, I am thinking about franchising one day, too.

THE MEAL PREP EXPERT
WHERE A PASSION FOR HEALTH MEETS MODERN DAY NEED ARTICLE BY DANIELLE ALEXANDER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HEATHER GAPPI PHOTOGRAPHY
MEAL PREP: VERB

EAT R IGH T | FOOD + BEVE RAGE
THE PROCESS OF PLANNING AND PREPARING MEALS.
When I actually take the time to prepare meals for my family, not only do our weeknights seem much less stressful, but I also feel good about what my family is eating. However, between work, my kids’ activities, family get-togethers and more, I don’t always have time to prep my family’s meals ahead of time. On those crazy weeks, I love that I can always rely on Lena Dabish though! Known as the local “Meal Prep Expert,” Dabish owns Clean Eats in West Bloomfield— a healthy fit kitchen
that makes innovative, delicious and nutritious meals that are all ready to heat and can even be delivered right to your doorstep. We recently caught up with her to discuss why meal prepping is so important, as well as how those interested in starting to prepare their meals in advance should go about the process.
DANIELLE: YOU’RE KNOWN AS THE “MEAL PREP EXPERT” IN OUR AREA. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE MEAL PREPPING BUSINESS? LENA: I love being the local "meal prep expert!" Last summer, Clean Eats celebrated our ninth year in business. My meal prepping journey started in 2012 at my local gym with my own health journey. Back then, I was given an opportunity to open up the smoothie bar, cooking off of two plate burners. My operation grew quite quickly, and I moved into my kitchen on Commerce in West Bloomfield a few years ago. My menu has certainly evolved since then, including 30-plus menu items plus partnerships with other local health-forward small businesses, including Planted Detroit, Gabby's Garden and Thyme & Honey. In addition, in 2019, I started Fresh Field Meats, a 100% grass-fed organic meat operation providing Michigan beef and poultry to our community. Right now, both Clean Eats and Fresh Field Meats are available at our storefront as well as Meijer's Rivertown Market and Woodward Corner Market. CONTINUED >

EAT R IGH T | FOOD + BEVE RAGE
DANIELLE: WHY DO YOU BELIEVE MEAL PREPPING IS IMPORTANT? LENA: These days, everyone is so busy— between working, raising children and day-to-day stressors. At the end of the day, it can be difficult to make the right decisions when it comes to your diet. Having healthy, balanced yet nutritious (and delicious) food on hand to grab makes those decisions so much easier. We've helped many clients over the past several years reach their health and weight goals, and that's something we're so proud of.
DANIELLE: HOW HAS MEAL PREPPING HELPED YOU, PERSONALLY? LENA: Clean Eats really took off when I began to put the healthy eating practices into my own life. Shortly after I launched this project, I was able to lose the pesky pounds that had accumulated in my late 20s and early 30s. I've learned a lot over the years as to proper portioning, and I'm happy to bring those practices home to my husband and two children. My entire family lives the CE lifestyle, but we also take time to treat ourselves when we know we need to. It's all about balance.

Chicken, Piedmontese Beef, Turkey, WildCaught Salmon, Grass Fed Steak or Shrimp Broccoli, Green Beans, Spinach, Asian Mix Veggies or Seasonal Veggies Brown Rice, Whole Wheat Pasta, Sweet Potato, Quinoa, Cauliflower Rice or Spaghetti Squash
DANIELLE: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO’S LOOKING TO START MEAL PREPPING 2022? LENA: Start with small goals first. Do you overindulge at dinner time? Try meal-prepping your dinner routine including protein, veggies and a small starch.
DANIELLE: WHAT RESOURCES DO YOU RECOMMEND THAT MEAL PREPPING NEWBIES CHECK OUT? LENA: If you're planning to use meal prepping to make big changes to your wellness routine, we always suggest seeking out a nutritionist for guidance first. 7.7 Nutrition is our go-to dietitian office, and we share many clients!
DANIELLE: WHAT MEAL PREPPING OPTIONS DOES CLEAN EATS OFFER CUSTOMERS WHO DON’T HAVE THE TIME/INTEREST IN DOING IT THEMSELVES? LENA: Clean Eats is 100% customizable! You can choose one of the 30+ items on our menu (Spicy Fiesta Chicken, Chicken and Sweet Potato, Teriyaki Seafood Bowls and Chicken Shawarmas are some of our top sellers!), and anything can be modified (we can sub cauliflower rice for organic brown rice or spaghetti squash for pasta, etc.). We also offer protein by the pound and family meals for easy weeknight dinners. Learn more about Lena’s menu at cleaneatsmi.com. Also, follow @cleateats_mi on Instagram.

DOES COVID HAVE YOU CLENCHING? ADAM FIENMAN, DDS DISCUSSES THE RECENT RISE IN TMJ PAIN AND WHAT THOSE SUFFERING CAN DO. ARTICLE BY DANIELLE ALEXANDER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY GILLESPIE
22
D EEA H PALTRT HY M ELIF N TE ST | CATEG Y LE | ORY LOCAL S E RVI CE S
In 2021, the American Dental Association (ADA) reported that more than 70% of surveyed dentists said they had seen an increase of teeth grinding and clenching among patients, and more than 60% of these dentists said they had seen a rise in Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) pain in their patients. On a local level, Dr. Adam Fienman of Adam Fienman, DDS said his experiences in dental health echoes that of the ADA studies, witnessing more incidents of patients visiting his office with dentofacial pain and broken teeth than in years before the COVID-19 pandemic. “Everyone is living life right now with an increased level of stress,” he said. “Everywhere we turn, we are confronted with change. Things we took for granted and that felt ‘easy’ before have become more difficult. Our day-to-day adventures have become more challenging.” And thus, many of us are— unknowingly— grinding and clenching. Dr. Fienman said the vast majority of TMJ pain is related to the chewing muscles that support the jaw joint; however, the pain is not always present. “For most people, there are long periods, months to years, of little to no pain punctuated by flare ups of intense pain that could last for days or weeks,” he explained. “I typically get a visit from a patient at these times of acute flare up.”
If you are experiencing or have experienced a flare up, don’t panic. Instead, Dr. Fienman said to be proactive and make changes to your habits for a week, so you can see how your body responds. Testing out a soft diet, avoiding chewing gum, taking anti-inflammatories on a regular schedule and choosing activities that will help reduce stress like meditation and exercise were some of his suggestions. However, if it has been a while since you have seen your dentist or your pain persists, it may be time to make an appointment for an evaluation. When patients come in to Dr. Fienman’s office and complain of TMJ pain, he first finds the source of the issue by interviewing the patient, taking the appropriate dental images and completing a thorough examination. Armed with this information, he and his staff can then develop a treatment plan to help patients put an end to their pain. He said the basic treatment plan for most flare ups include soft diet, anti-inflammatories, heat or cold therapy and bite guard therapy. However, some situations require other therapies that could range from medications, electrical stimulation, low level laser therapy and even Botox therapy, which Dr. Fienman’s office offers as an adjunct to traditional TMJ CONTINUED >

therapies to help patients achieve their optimal level of dental health. “We have all heard the name Botox, usually related to aesthetics and a youthful, wrinkle-free look,” he explained. “Botox is an injectable toxin that works by blocking the ability of a muscle to contract. Botulinum Toxin can be used therapeutically to reduce the symptoms of TMJ myofascial pain. Botulinum Toxin injections can be used to help calm overactive chewing muscles, giving the patient months of pain relief.” Dr. Fienman is constantly learning about new techniques to help his patients. For more information on how to treat your aching jaw or any other dental-related needs, call (248)-539-3600 or visit fienmandds.com.

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 26
S ELF CA R E | FITN ESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. “It’s an interesting moment in time. There’s this heightened sense of, ‘how do I become more resilient, how do I boost my immune system?’ Health and wellness is way more in the spotlight, and the trend of more people being at home has launched a new consumer process,” they say. “What’s also exciting about this is that we have partnered with American Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman, who has a very specific protocol: Get in for sixty seconds, get out for sixty, do three to five rotations and get to the point of a shiver.”
It doesn’t hurt that they are designed with your home in mind. The elegant and unique physique makes it an easy decision for everyone to appreciate. “The design passed the wife test—everyone was happy to have it! We appreciate aesthetics and design, that’s been a key piece. It fits with a beautiful home and we are proud of that.” Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” Different protocols are needed for different desired results. They recommend one style of plunging for increasing metabolism and fat loss and a different, more deliberate process for muscle recovery or inflammation, mental clarity and so on. Ryan also compares it to working out, citing weightlifting as an example. “The whole thing is tearing your muscles down so they become stronger. You are going through an intentional stressor. You will get a relaxed response after, but you are intentionally putting yourself into a fight or flight state. It’s uncomfortable. You are literally going through an override of that natural internal process, and that sends signals back into the body that creates these different activations.”
The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” “What’s also exciting about this is that we have partnered with American Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman, who has a very specific protocol: Get in for sixty seconds, get out for sixty, do three to five rotations and get to the point of a shiver,” he says. Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice. Ryan has his own process—getting in, breathing four seconds in and four seconds out, transitioning his hands in and out of the water because their different nerve endings create a different blood flow and kick off the fight or flight mechanism. His nervous system then calms down and his mind sets into calmness roughly two and a half minutes in. After a three minute plunge, he comes out super energized with mental clarity. “It feels like a back door to meditation for people who don’t meditate, i.e. two to three minutes vs twenty,” he says. “It’s a totally different process, but you push out the mental chatter and you become more present.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately CONTINUED >

it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. “A lot of people who come for our product just want to do hard things, uncomfortable things. They say, if it’s good for me AND it’s difficult, then they are completely motivated by that.” The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. “One of the things that has been rad that we did not anticipate is parents doing it with their children,” he says. “It’s become this ritual where they do it together, a family plunge.” CrossFit frontman Rich Froning told the team that the coolest thing about having The Plunge is doing the plunge together every night with his daughter. It’s another layered benefit for their clients to know, one of creating special time around doing something uncomfortable and getting healthier, together.
