Celebrating Women
May 2022 PUBLISHER
Joe Geagea | joe.geagea@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Amy Niezur | amy.niezur@citylifestyle.com
Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in herself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in others and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed, rather than competing, is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own lives can be something that comes naturally, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue we are highlighting some women-owned businesses in the community as well as favorite spots of interest to local women. From shopping, to brunch, to finding the perfect spring flowers to brighten your home, you are sure to find something that inspires! Speaking of inspiration, I encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone, and lift each other up. Take time to reach out and thank those inspirational women for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it.

Yoga Transforms the Lives of Two Local Moms

AT H LE T E LIF E | FITNESS
Susan Weisberg and Katie Leibhan are busy moms and the owners of Bold Yoga (formerly Yoga Shelter). Bold Yoga has several locations throughout the metro Detroit area, including right here in West Bloomfield! Here, Susan and Katie share how the practice of yoga has impacted their lives.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN PRACTICING YOGA? Susan: I’ve always been focused on health and wellness. I needed something that made my body stronger while allowing me to not always grind and push. Yoga was exactly what I needed physically, and then it evolved into an entire mind-body connection. Katie: In 2009, I was living in Royal Oak right across the street from Royal Oak Yoga Shelter. I decided to give it a try on a whim one Friday afternoon. After three classes, I was hooked! I found myself in tears at the end of class whenever we would hold pigeon pose. I knew that this was something I needed. My body never felt better, and it completely transformed my life. I haven’t stopped practicing since.
HOW HAS YOGA AFFECTED YOUR LIFE? Susan: My consistent yoga practice helps me be a better version of myself. I am learning to embrace the journey and not always look forward to the destination. I am stronger; physically, mentally, and spiritually. My yoga practice on the mat helps me off the mat to live a life that is more present, insightful, and kinder to myself and others. Katie: Yoga is my life! It is the one and only physical practice that I consistently want to go back to. It has kept my body in shape through my 20s, 30s and now 40s. Along the way, I have had two children, lost loved ones, and have had so many other ups and downs.
Yoga has been there the whole time. It’s so much more than a physical practice.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR OWN STUDIOS? Susan: Yoga is a significant part of my life and can impact so many who have yet to experience its magic. Katie and I have practiced yoga for many years all over the world. We wanted to create a space for all practitioners to come as they are to experience yoga with a supportive, loving, inclusive community. Katie: We truly believe that if every single person practices yoga in some way, the world could be transformed. It is our mission to bring yoga to the metro Detroit area that is accessible and real. We are both moms and we want to provide a space that is open and accessible to people. In fact, it was on a girls trip a few years ago that Susan and I hatched this idea, and here we are today!
WHAT ABOUT YOUR LIVES AWAY FROM THE STUDIO? Susan: I have an amazing husband and three beautiful children who are my guiding light. You can find me “mom-ing” real hard in the community. I also serve on the Judson Center gala committee every year to raise awareness and funds for the meaningful work they do in our community. Katie: As a mom, 99% of my time away from the studio is spent with my kids and my husband. We like to travel, read, play, draw, be outside and explore!! The other 1% of the time, I love to hang with my girlfriends… going for coffee, out to meals, and just hanging! Bold Flow Yoga 6357 Orchard Lake Rd, West Bloomfield, MI 248.538.0200 boldflowyoga.com

Spring is Blooming! Local Florist Shares How to Make Your Home Sing in Spring ARTICLE BY AMY NIEZUR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY GILLESPIE
The days are getting warmer, and everywhere you look the world is turning green again. Outside, pops of color appear everywhere you look. Tulips, daffodils, and irises dot garden beds. Apple, magnolia, and redbud trees are a riot of vibrant blossoms. What could be better than to enjoy the beauty of spring indoors as well? Fresh flowers are a perfect way to brighten your home and your mood. Michele Hinds, owner of The Vines Flower and Garden Shop in Farmington, agrees. “Oh boy, we love our spring flowers! Spring is a very exciting season for
flowers. We always prefer to buy locally grown flowers when we can.” Of course, with our cold Michigan winters, this means local flowers are limited while the snow flies. Michele revels in the bounty that comes with the warmer weather. “Spring comes and our farmers start the season off strong with so many gorgeous blooms—freesia, tulips, iris, grape hyacinth, anemones, and ranunculus. They are all so beautiful and smell amazing!” CONTINUED >

Around the house, fresh flowers are a great way to liven up your décor. Michele’s expert advice is to incorporate flowers “everywhere and anywhere you can!” She suggests using fresh flowers “as a centerpiece for your dining room table, in little bottles in your bathroom, by your kitchen sink or on a kitchen island.” Fresh flowers, with the stems cut short, can also be arranged in decorative teacups, a great use for antique cups handed down from grandma. To make flowers float better in glass bowls, try cutting a small circle of bubble wrap with a hole in the center, and then slip it over the stem. Slide the bubble wrap close to the base of the blossom and your flowers will rest on the surface without becoming waterlogged. Whatever you choose, says Michele, “We are all in need of some happiness and color after these winter months, and flowers are the perfect way to do just that!” When making your own arrangements, Michele suggests choosing a variety of flowers and foliage with different textures, shapes, and sizes. You want to create visual interest! To keep your blossoms fresh for as long as possible, be sure to use clean, fresh water. Remove the lower leaves from all stems and cut stems at an angle to maximize water absorption. Be sure to use a sharp knife. If you are feeling intimidated about floral design, don’t despair. Michele is eager to provide professional assistance. Michele was inspired to pursue a career in floral design after taking an extended day class in high school, and she fell in love thanks to an inspiring teacher. As a result, Michele’s creativity shines through with premade floral arrangements such as “Spring Vibes”, “Golden Hour”, and “String of Pearls.” You can visit Michele for advice, ideas, and an array of fresh, colorful blooms and more at The Vines Flower and Garden Shop. While there, be sure to check out the gorgeous floral mural on the exterior wall, painted by local artist Mackenzie Harthun. Happy spring!

The time comes in many of our lives where the needs of aging parents, or even yourself, come to the forefront. There can be many decisions to make. Move to a senior community? Age at home? The answer depends on the needs and preferences of your family. These decisions can be challenging, says Kelsey Brown, of Cranberry Park in West Bloomfield. “Choosing a community for your loved one can be an emotional challenge for your family.” Regardless of your choice, it is essential that the basic needs of daily living are considered. Most importantly, start with some honest conversations about your loved one’s ability to care for him or herself. Are they mobile? Can they cook, clean, and shop for themself? These fundamentals can be a good launching point for narrowing down the best option. Your loved one may just need help running errands or may have more complex needs, requiring help with bathing, food preparation, and medications. Cranberry Park, a new facility in West Bloomfield, offers services from respite programs to help your loved one get back to independence after surgery, to assisted living to support an independent lifestyle, to memory care. Basic needs are balanced with enrichment programs designed to enhance residents’ lives. Notes Kelsey, “Our life enrichment program offers robust cultural activities and fine arts. An active lifestyle is best maintained by providing diverse daily socialization. In addition to activities, our fine dining offers a chef-created menu. This menu is adaptable to meet your loved one’s food preferences along with their nutritional needs. At Cranberry Park of West Bloomfield, our around-the-clock support team is available to provide your loved one with care and compassion.” At any age, building a sense of connection is critical, and the right environment can help. Says Kelsey, “Our neighborhood living boasts warm, well-appointed settings that pulse with a true spirit of community and caring. Mingle when you want and enjoy your own company when you want." Adds Kelsey, “Cranberry Park of West Bloomfield prides itself on a unique boutique-style living that mixes concierge lifestyle service with incomparable supportive services. Nestled within a lush nature preserve, we are conveniently located near various desirable shopping and dining establishments. Recently opened, we invite you to immerse yourself in our fine dining, enriching activities, and unparalleled senior living lifestyle.” Cranberry Park of West Bloomfield 2450 Haggerty Rd, West Bloomfield, MI 248.671.4204 cranberrypark.net
