Lifestyle Letter

One of the guys. I

grew up in a home with all women, but now I am outnumbered in my household by three to one. Today, I am the sole female in our home. When my boys were younger, I grew hoarse from trying to get them to sit still. I got frustrated with attempts to stop the symphony of bodily noises at the dinner table. I started to wonder if it was possible for a pair of pants to last more than a month without getting a hole in the knee (the answer is “no”). But I’ve learned to appreciate what makes my family of guys different from me and embrace their energetic masculinity. Being in a family of all males has had its advantages. I can throw a football in a perfect spiral and I’m starting to appreciate video games. I get eager with anticipation of each new Star Wars film and I love to explore in the woods (I don’t even care if I get muddy anymore). Now I feel like I’m just one of the guys. This June issue of West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle is dedicated to the men in our lives and is packed full of stories our male readers are sure to enjoy. This month we’ll teach you how to be king of the grill and shop for a family car that will still give you a rush of adrenaline. We’ll introduce you to men in our community from Welling & Co. Jewelers, Liberty Center and one of our own talented photographers for West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle. So take a break from mowing the lawn, grab your favorite beverage and spend some time diving into our Men’s issue of West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle. BMW 528i with xDrive ENJOY DRIVING AGAIN

S

ometimes my wife and I don’t see eye to eye. Such is the case when it comes to automobiles. To her, a car is just a mode of transportation—a way to get from point A to point B. To me, a car is not just a way to get down the road, but rather a vehicle for excitement. I love to drive. In my 20s I owned a silver sports car that I drove whenever I had a spare moment. Twenty years and two kids later, I find myself driving an SUV. Now the time has come to look for a new vehicle. I need a family-friendly vehicle that that will still get my heart pumping. After much investigation and many test drives, I found the BMW 528i with xDrive. On the outside, the BMW 528i is a classically refined sedan that will turn the heads of other drivers. It comes standard with 17-inch wheels, automatic and adaptive xenon headlights, LED accent lights and LED fog lights. As soon as I opened the door, I was anxious to get behind the wheel. The spacious and comfortable cabin beckons you to

sit in the captain’s chair. When I sit in a car for the first time, I like to familiarize myself with its features. The BMW 528i does not disappoint when it comes to high-tech features and creature comforts, including auto-dimming heated mirrors, automatic wipers, sunroof, dual-zone cruise control, power-tilt-steering wheel and iDrive interface with a 10.2 inch display. For the music lover, it has a 12-speaker sound system, aux-in jack and 20 GB of digital music storage. Now for the best part—I started the engine. As the motor purred, I could almost hear the 40 plus years of refinement that went into its development. I pressed down hard on the gas pedal. I was amazed how quickly this large sedan accelerates. It is truly impressive that this car can hit 60 mph in just over six seconds. The BMW 528i is all of this, while maintaining a sensible mpg— around 30 combined. The 8-speed automatic transmission performs flawlessly. However, if you want a truer driving experience, you can opt for manual drive and use the steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters. You will feel like a rock star! This model has the xDrive moniker, which means it exhibits incredible handling in all weather, including Ohio winters. The finetuned powertrain, suspension and steering system provide driving dynamics that are high precision while still smooth running. I could feel the sporty driving pleasure that the chassis transmitted from the road directly through the steering wheel. The end result is a vehicle that offers an exhilarating combination of sheer dynamism, comfort and everyday usability. When you are looking to buy your next family car, don’t settle for a boring old sedan or an adrenaline inhibiting SUV. Treat yourself to a luxury and pulse-boosting vehicle, the BMW 528i with xDrive. Visit BMW of Cincinnati North at 105 West Kemper Road to test drive the 528i. BMWofCincinnatiNorth.com June 2016 | West Chester and Liberty Lifestyle

ou know the smell. It’s intoxicating. Crisp, gray charcoal burns on the grill as the sweet scent of marinated, sizzling chicken wafts through the

evening air. Warm, inviting smoke rises through the sky like a balloon. You’re wrapped up in the vapors like a blanket. In the background you can smell fresh cut grass, kids lathered in sunscreen, and perhaps a cocktail with a burst of lemon. The aroma of a summer grill can leave many of us practically drooling for that first bite. With school out and summer in full swing (and because we keep smelling your grills) we spoke to two local experts who uncovered their best kept secrets for creating culinary masterpieces on a hot grill. Ryan Knuth, Executive Chef of Barrington of West Chester and owner of Mortar & Pestle Rubs and Seasonings, along with Melanie Cedargren, owner of The Spicy Olive, shared their expertise and special recipes with us. We’ve boiled their secrets down to a few tips and tricks that can inspire anyone—whether you’re a novice or an expert—to fire up that grill and craft a meal that will leave your whole neighborhood drooling for more. 18

FIRST THINGS FIRST—THE GRILL

How much should a grill cost? Don’t go into debt because of a grill. No C h e f R ya n K n

matter how much you spend on a grill, you have to take care of it. Ryan u th ,

gril

lm

suggests you keep the grates oiled and cleaned, and clear out anything that as

te r .

falls underneath after each use. Cast iron is great because it holds the heat in, but it can rust, so be sure to keep it cleaned and oiled. The easiest way to clean a grill is to turn it on and let it preheat. After preheating, take a grill brush and give it a good brush. When your grates are clean, you get the nice, beautiful grill marks. Always have a backup propane tank. You never want to have a party and realize you’re out of propane! MEAT TIPS

Steaks Before you throw them on the grill, let your steaks sit out for a half hour so they’re at room temperature. They’ll loosen up faster and cook more evenly. Chicken When cooking chicken breasts, be sure to tenderize them (pound them out) so they’re the same thickness throughout. It cooks more evenly so the thin side doesn’t dry out. Fish Instead of tossing your fish directly on the grill, purchase a cedar plank (untreated) at your hardware store or any place that sells lumber. Soak the wood for a minimum of an hour in water so when you put it on your grill, it will smolder and season the fish (chicken works, too) with a smoky taste. You can wash and reuse the planks a few times. Try grilling salmon, mahi, grouper or tilapia on a cedar plank—you’re guaranteed to love it. Buy Locally When possible, buy grass-fed beef for a naturally less fatty cut and beefier taste. Ryan gets his beef at Grassland Graze, where the cows live in the same neighborhood we do—they are a local cattle producer located in Liberty Township.

HEAT TIPS

Indirect Heat If you have a three or four burner grill, leave one of your burners off while the rest are on, and utilize the non-lit burner(s) to provide indirect heat. This is a great place to let your meat rest. You want to let your meats rest, especially steaks and burgers, so that the liquid redistributes throughout the meat. Instant Read Thermometer A simple purchase at a grocery store can save you from having to guess when your meats are done. Stick an instant read thermometer into the thickest part of your meat for 15-20 seconds. On average, internal temperatures should hit: Chicken and turkey: 165 degrees Pork: 135-140 degrees Burgers: Well done is 155-160 degrees; medium is 135-140 degrees Fish: 140 degrees Steak: Well done is 165-170 degrees; medium is 155-160 degrees; medium rare is 140-145 degrees

GRILLING 101 (CON TI N U ED)

THE GRILL IS NOT JUST FOR MEAT EATERS

Veggies Keep your veggies as large as possible when grilling. For zucchini, yellow squash and peppers, cut them in half, season up with salt and pepper, herbed olive oil or soy sauce, and then put them on the grill. Cook the veggies on both sides and cut them down to your desired size after they grill. For added flavor, toss with parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar after grilling. Fruit Yes, you can grill your fruit! Try large pieces of pineapples, peaches, plums and nectarines. Use a hot grill and grill them quickly, chop them up and serve over vanilla ice cream. Fruits have so much natural sugar that they’ll caramelize. For the daring, a dash of chili powder can bring out the sweetness of fruits.

RUBS, SPICES AND MARINADES: SEASONING TIPS

Marinades Don’t marinade with alcohol. Although it’s tempting to flavor with beer or wine, the alcohol will dry out your meats. Coke or any kind of cola product is an excellent, easy marinade. Its sugars and acids will break down your meats and give it a really interesting flavor. Olive Oil & Balsamic For a lot of flavor and moistness, add olive oil and balsamic vinegar to your meats and veggies before tossing them on the grill. Oils from The Spicy Olive are ultra-premium grade, which is the highest quality—even better than extra virgin! Steak Marinade Use The Spicy Olive’s Tuscan Herb Olive Oil and Neapolitan Herb Balsamic Vinegar to marinate a steak, then sprinkle it with Mortar & Pestle’s Burger and Steak blend before you grill. At the end of the day, grilling can be fun and adventurous. Do what we did and ask the people around you how they grill. Go to a farmer’s market and ask the vendors what they do. Don’t be afraid to try something new or unfamiliar—you just might like it!

WELLING & CO. JEWELERS A GEM IN OUR COMMUNITY FOR NEARLY A CENTURY

S

OF JEWELRY

till flourishing nearly a century after it first started, Welling & Co. Jewelers now has a unique new space in Olde West Chester. The first thing you notice as you enter the new location at 8992 CincinnatiDayton Road, is a beautifully-made, eye-catching brick wall across the room. “We also had unique cases made to formulate into our environment here. In our industry you don’t see a whole lot of that,” says Bill Welling Jr., owner of Welling & Co. Jewelers. When you walk through the showroom, what stands out most is the glass window with a jeweler behind it, working on a piece of jewelry right before your eyes. “I think it solidifies our commitment to our customer and it also gives the customer reassurance about an heirloom they may have had for their whole life that may need some tweaking,” Bill says. “To see someone physically working on that piece, it’s the reassurance of it. This whole business is built on trust, and that emphasizes it.” 24

West Chester and Liberty Lifestyle | June 2016

Welling & Co. started in 1920 in a Lockland storefront location opened by Welling’s grandfather and then handed down to his father and uncle. Before it was in West Chester, Welling opened his business in 1979 in Mason. Later, he moved it to West Chester— most recently the store was located in the Voice of America Centre. “In moving down here [to Olde West Chester], you lose a bit of the connection with the retailer, so we have to show everybody that comes in an experience they wouldn’t forget, so they can pass that on,” Bill says.

“One of the things that we found out is that we are more visible on this road than where we were at VOA Centre, because we were in a group with all those stores and we kind of lost our identity in that area, whereas here, we obviously stand out,” he continues. Aside from the prime location of the store, Welling also has a benefit right beside him: his son, Daniel Welling. He is the fourth-generation Welling in the family business. Daniel is Welling & Co.’s designer of custom jewelry. His process is very creative for customers. "It's kind of like mashing different designs together,” Daniel explains. “So you take different characteristics of different pieces of what that person has highlighted as being something they like, and then you create something unique and custom with all those ideas in mind.” Welling & Co. not only designs custom jewelry, but also has everything from boutique fashion jewelry to sterling silver. What makes Welling & Co. a gem in the West Chester community is its drive to serve it. “One word—service…our whole concept here is to make your shopping experience an experience you won’t forget,” Bill concludes. SAFE FAMILIES FOR CHILDREN HOLDING FAMILIES TOGETHER WITH A STRUCTURE OF SUPPORT ARTICLE DIANA TELLES | PHOTOGRAPHY MICHELLE LLOYD

very day there are households of all varieties living in crisis. Even in flourishing suburban communities like West Chester and Liberty, there exist families who Abi Omoloja, West Chester are overwhelmed by desperate sitresident and Safe Families uations. Not everyone has access to Host Family father. family members or friends on which they can depend when life is at an impasse. What if we could help lift these families out of despair and empower them to help themselves? What if the systematic methods of child welfare services could be complemented by a proactive forum of holistic family support? Safe Families for Children is an initiative that offers voluntary child care to these struggling families. Children referred to Safe Families are 26

West Chester and Liberty Lifestyle | June 2016

welcomed into a secure and loving home offered strictly out of compassion, and never for compensation. The interim living arrangement for a child in the care of a Host Family is short-lived, and is quite simply a show of grace and humanity to provide temporary relief. It allows time for parents to make necessary corrections and regain self-reliance. “Safe Families is a faith-based, Christian ministry. It’s a powerful social movement, and there are thousands of people involved worldwide,” explains Chris Combs, Catalyst for Safe Families in our area. The ultimate goal of this ongoing relationship between Safe Families and the people it serves is the reunification of families. Combs is responsible for bringing the ministry from its roots in Chicago to the Cincinnati region. Organized primarily through local church communities, there are now dozens of families in West Chester alone who are hosting children and building relationships with the parents of those children through Safe Families.

Parents in distress are typically referred to the ministry by hospitals, medical facilities, churches and elementary schools. These entities are familiar with Safe Families, and are committed to using it as a resource when they encounter a need. While their children are nurtured in a loving environment, struggling parents are immersed in the Safe Families community where they encounter tangible, effective support. Host Families stand to benefit as well. Abi Omoloja, a West Chester resident and Safe Families Host Family father says, “Hosting a child is a family affair. Everybody gets involved, even our teenage kids.” Abi and his wife Leye most recently hosted a one-year-old boy, Ayden, for several weeks. “We treat him like family,” says Abi. Abi explains that his kids are always excited to host when a child stays in their home. It’s like playtime to them. He has noticed in watching the kids interact that his teens seem to be developing skills in responsibility and have learned to be more authoritative. “They are seeing how we give back and show care for other people,” he says. When asked how their busy family manages to make time for a young child, Leye contends that it all falls into place. “We don’t feel we are doing anything extra. We are called to do this. If a child wakes up in the night, we just get it done. It’s a ministry. You get up and do it.” She adds, “The reward is great when we pour love into somebody else.” As part of this vibrant fellowship, Host Families such as the Omolojas are supported by other Safe Families volunteers. Babysitting, transportation and meals are available to help alleviate logistical challenges as they arise. While Ayden is fortunately back at home with his mother, the Omolojas still make time for casual and supportive visits with both of them. Safe Families inspires such relationships, which helps transform a struggling family into one of wholeness. “We partner and collaborate,” affirms Combs. “Those who were in social isolation now have hope working alongside them because they have caring adults walking next to them.” In his experience serving families in crisis, Combs has learned that government welfare systems and charities do not lift people out of poverty. As Combs see it, what truly works is a relationship that aligns people in crisis with a permanent support structure like Safe Families.

Behind the Lens

ARTICLE TERA MICHELSON | PHOTOGRAPHY MASTERWORKS IMAGING

W

hat makes a great photograph? We could argue about the philosophies of composition, lighting, exposure and vision, but what about the eye behind the lens? Rob Wermuth is the man behind the lens for many of West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle's photographs. He shot three of our covers (February, May and June, 2016) and his images have complemented several of our stories since he began working on our team in December, 2015. Rob, of Masterworks Imaging, has been viewing the world through a camera lens for most of his life. With 23 years experience as a professional photographer and about 2,500 weddings captured by him and his studio team, he has seen it all through a view finder. A good photographer has an eye for a beautiful shot—how to frame it just right, gauge the light and shadows for the perfect exposure. But Rob has more than just an artistic eye; his heart is behind the lens of his camera. Taking pictures isn’t his hobby; it’s Rob Wermuth comes out from behind the Masterhis calling and his life’s work. works Imaging camera. It’s the indefinable factors that make a photographer great. Rob has an unparalleled knack for making people feel at ease. When taking pictures on a busy and emotional day, that is no small feat. When we feel comfortable, we are free to be ourselves. Rob’s photographs let personalities show. With a sixth sense that defies the wedding chaos around him, Rob snaps a photo just at the right second to capture a relationship in a single image: a look of surprise, a falling tear, a spontaneous laugh—he captures moments to remember from a special day. “When you see the emotion coming to the surface, you have to be ready for the moment,” Rob says, trying to explain the philosophy to which he and his wife and business partner, Michelle Wermuth, subscribe. “We really believe that there’s a precise moment that the picture needs to be taken. You have to be good at finding that moment. You can’t just hold the button down and hope for the best,” he says. Sometimes, brides, grooms and their guests hardly know Rob and Michelle are there. “Over the years, we’ve had brides call us and say, ‘Did you get any pictures? I don’t remember seeing you!’” he says. “We always use a long lens—a 400 millimeter. Some panicked brides may not remember seeing us there, but we’ll have 500 great candids without getting in the way on their day,” Rob shrugs. “I like to tell couples, ‘We won’t monopolize your day. We know your wedding day is more about other things than just photography.’” Rob and his wife, Michelle, understand the value of not just a great wedding day and photos that show it, but a strong marriage. They are quite a team, running a successful business and raising a house full of boys. Life comes into focus when we get the opportunity to see it from behind Rob's lens.
