Invest Wisely

When we hear the word “invest,” our minds often jump to stocks, savings and financial planning. But investment is about so much more than money— it’s about where we choose to put our time, energy and resources to create lasting value.

In this issue, we explore different ways to invest—not just financially, but in our future, our community and each other. We highlight how our Lakota schools are investing in the next generation.

We also feature the Character Council, a nonprofit celebrating twenty-five years of strengthening our community by fostering a community of upstanding character and integrity.

We also explore the more traditional definition of investment. We sit down with a local financial advisor for advice on how, when and why to start investing early. The team at MidPointe Library guides us to books to help build financial literacy.

One of my earliest lessons in investment came from the college graduation gift from my stepfather. Each of his children and step-children got to choose a company, and he got us $100 of their stock. My siblings all chose retail companies of personal interest, which are now out of business (does anyone remember Casual Corner?). As the youngest, I took a more practical approach and chose Procter & Gamble. At the time, it meant that I only got a couple of shares compared to the larger quantity my siblings received, but almost thirty years later, those shares are worth substantially more and still paying dividends. It was an early lesson in investing wisely and thinking ahead!

Whether you’re growing your wealth, supporting a cause or mentoring someone—every investment you make shapes a better tomorrow. We hope this issue inspires you to invest in something meaningful.

Happy reading!

Character Council Celebrates 25 Years + 25 Heroes

of Character

For 25 years, the Character Council has championed integrity, kindness and resilience, shaping lives across Greater Cincinnati. Each month, the organization focuses on a specific character trait, providing resources, training and community events to promote and encourage these values across the Tri-State. Their mission—to foster character development in children and adults—has remained steadfast while evolving to meet the needs of an ever-changing world.

As part of this initiative, the Council hosts an annual event recognizing those who embody these values. On April 8, the Delta Marriott in Sharonville will host

- MARY ANDRES RUSSELL, BOARD CHAIR
Dolores J. Lindsay receives the 2024 Pillar of Character Award from Mary Andres Russell, Board Chair of the Character Council.

the 2025 Heroes of Character 25th Anniversary Celebration, honoring 25 individuals, nominated by teachers, principals, colleagues and peers. The event features a reception, dinner, awards ceremony and silent auction, celebrating those who inspire positive change.

“The need for character is timeless,” explains Mary Andres Russell, Board Chair of the Council. “Every generation needs caring people of good character and integrity to do the right thing and to lead with excellence.”

This year’s honorees reflect that commitment.

Among them, founders Michael P. and Pamela Daly will share the Pillar of Character Award, and Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge will receive the Courageous Leadership Award. Additionally, Mary Andres Russell and Jill Tomey will receive True North Awards for their 20+ years of dedication to the organization.

“We look for stories of [candidates] who’ve demonstrated character values,” says Susan Mitchell, Board of Directors member and event co-chair. “Some overcome hardships, others advocate for those who cannot and many volunteer to impact their communities.”

One particularly moving example came from last year’s honorees.

“We honored a preschool student who found little ways to make a difference—holding the door for classmates and cleaning up messes made by others—never expecting to be rewarded,” Mitchell recalls. “It showed that everyone, no matter their age, can make a difference.”

Reflecting on 25 years of Heroes of Character, Russell shares other unforgettable stories.

“We honored a first grader whose mother had recently died. Despite her loss, she showed up for school with a good attitude and a smile on her face,” she says. “The 2024 Celebration was also memorable because we honored 31 Heroes, including a mother who lost her daughter and used her passion

and grief to start a home helping young people overcome addiction.”

"We honored a Hero who brought free healthcare to underserved communities through school clinics,” Mitchell adds. “Another teacher ensured students had clothing and supplies by creating a resource closet.”

Character-building is crucial to mental health, especially for today’s youth.

“Almost all schools are now engaged in some level of character education,” Russell notes.

The Character Council’s five-year plan focuses on expanding its impact.

“We are launching new seminars that provide skills for handling difficult emotions and conversations,” Russell continues. “We’re also working to make our training accessible on-demand through online platforms.”

With these plans in motion, community support is more important than ever.

“There are many ways to support the Character Council,” says Mitchell. “Volunteer your time and skills or make a monetary donation.”

FINANCIAL PLANNING 101

When it comes to money matters, having a solid plan is everything. That’s where Gage Hemmelgarn comes in. As a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA®), he’s been guiding clients toward financial confidence since joining Edward Jones in 2012. Whether you’re planning for retirement, navigating investments, preparing to sell a business or just starting out, Gage believes in strategies that are smart and sustainable. We asked him questions about how to get started.

Q: WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO START INVESTING?

A: The best time to start is as soon as possible. Even if you can only invest a small amount at first, consistency is key. That said, it’s important to have a strong financial foundation, such as an emergency fund and manageable debt before diving in.

Q:  SHOULD I FOCUS ON PAYING OFF DEBT OR BUILDING AN EMERGENCY FUND BEFORE INVESTING?

A: It depends on the type of debt. High-interest debt (like credit cards) should be paid off first because the interest outweighs potential investment returns. If your debt has a low interest rate (like a

mortgage or student loan), you can invest while paying it down. However, having an emergency fund is crucial before investing, so you don’t have to sell investments at a loss when unexpected expenses arise.

Q: HOW MUCH MONEY SHOULD I SET ASIDE BEFORE I BEGIN INVESTING?

A: There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It all starts having a goal in mind. Are you investing for retirement, a house or general wealth building? Your goals determine your strategy.

Q: HOW DO I DETERMINE MY RISK TOLERANCE, AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

A: Risk tolerance is your ability and willingness to endure market fluctuations. You can assess it by considering:

• Time horizon: Longer time frames allow for more risk-taking.

• Emotional response: Can you handle market downturns without panic-selling?

• Financial situation: Do you have stable income and savings to cushion volatility?

Q: WHAT ARE THE MAIN TYPES OF INVESTMENTS AND HOW DO THEY DIFFER?

A: The main investment types include:

• Stocks: Ownership in a company, offering high growth potential but more volatility.

• Bonds: Loans to governments or corporations, providing stable but lower returns.

• Mutual Funds: Professionally managed funds that pool money to invest in a mix of assets, offering diversification but often higher fees.

• ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds): Like mutual funds but traded on stock exchanges, typically with lower fees and more flexibility. Each type has a different risk-reward profile, and the best mix depends on your financial goals.

industries so that if one area takes a hit, the rest of your portfolio can help balance things out. It’s important because it helps lower risk and keeps your investments more stable over the long run. A well-diversified portfolio is one of the best ways to ride out market ups and downs.

Q: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH A FINANCIAL

ADVISOR?

A: A good financial advisor looks at your entire financial picture. That includes budgeting, debt management, retirement planning, tax strategies, insurance and even estate planning.  Investing is just one piece of the puzzle and an advisor helps make sure all the pieces fit together to support your long-term goals. They also help keep you on track, adjusting your plan as life changes and helping you avoid emotional decisions that could impact your planning.

EDUCATION UPDATE

LAKOTA LOCAL SCHOOLS IS INVESTED IN THE COMMUNITY’S FUTURE THROUGH INNOVATION IN EDUCATION

Innovation is key to the success of Lakota Local Schools. Priding itself on being personalized, future ready, fiscally responsible and in partnership with students, staff, parents and community members, the district is thriving. The school year is in full swing, pushing to a strong finish this summer with a lot of excitement and hope. Read how Lakota is invested in our community’s future with their trailblazing efforts at the largest suburban public school district in southwest Ohio.

Dr. Ashley Whitely, Superintendent of Lakota Local Schools, joined the district last July.
“At Lakota Local Schools, our commitment to excellence is reflected in the achievements of our students and staff.”
-Dr. Ashley Whitely, Superintendent

Dr. Ashley Whitely

Lakota Local Schools Superintendent Ashley Whitely hit the ground running when she joined the district in July. Embarking on a listening and learning journey, Whitely held over 100 sessions in a four-month period. The information gathered from staff, students, families and community members will now be used as Lakota begins creating a new strategic plan.

Some of the feedback Whitely heard will also be considered as the Board of Education and district move forward with its work on a new master facilities plan to address the district’s aging facilities and overcrowding in its schools.

“A master facilities plan that complements our long-term vision for instruction is paramount to the success of our district, so being able to delve into this work simultaneously is a tremendous opportunity,” Whitely says.

Whitely has also introduced a new video series called Let’s Go, Lakota that invites viewers into our schools to get a peek at what teaching and learning looks like at Lakota Local Schools.

“Our mantra this year has been ‘Together, WE can…’ and our focus on togetherness is continuing to inspire and support our students in reaching their full academic potential,” Whitely says. “At Lakota Local Schools, our commitment to excellence is reflected in the achievements of our students and staff.”

3 Unique Dining Experiences

In her 32nd year of teaching, Adena Elementary School teacher Diane Meyer has transitioned from teaching math to social studies. Recognized as Lakota’s Elementary Educator of Excellence last year, Meyer now leads her fifth-grade class with a fresh approach. Her Meyerville Market initiative introduces students to economics and personal finance. Students earn a $5 weekly salary, with opportunities to earn more for good behavior, while also facing financial responsibilities like paying for lost items. The monthly market allows students to spend their earnings on classroom perks and negotiate for privileges. This hands-on experience has students eagerly participating, showcasing their understanding of economics and negotiation. Meyer's innovative teaching methods combine financial literacy with interactive learning, preparing students for real-world challenges.

Elementary Economics  Learning Labs

This year, Lakota’s early childhood schools have introduced a new K-2 English Language Arts curriculum that emphasizes comprehension through hands-on learning. Emily Hermann, Lakota’s Director of K-6 Curriculum, praises the labs for allowing students to creatively explore ideas and collaborate.

Principal Becky Francko is proud of the innovative approach they are taking at Hopewell ECS, where students receive an hour of instruction followed by an hour of practical application in learning labs in the school’s Innovation Hub. The school’s large hub accommodates multiple labs, with instructional aide Robin Madden curating the stations. Hopewell teacher Leader Libby Brown notes that the labs ensure equitable learning experiences. Teachers like Donna Jones appreciate the curriculum's ability to meet diverse learning styles. Positive feedback from teachers indicates increased student engagement and the effectiveness of the playbased structure in enhancing language acquisition.

Expanded Learning at Grades 7-12

Lakota's College Credit Plus (CCP) program expanded this year, offering more students the chance to earn college credit in high school.

“Up until now, our CCP courses mirrored our Advanced Placement (AP) course options, which limited the options for a broader range of students to take advantage of this really attractive program,” says Lakota’s Director of 7-12 Curriculum Andrew Wheatley.

There’s an added financial benefit for families, with the courses often fulfilling general education requirements for college majors. The new courses include psychology, sociology, government, financial literacy and English 12 credits.

Diversifying CCP offerings also aims to enhance Lakota’s performance on Ohio’s new College, Career, Workforce & Military (CCWM) report card component, measuring graduates' readiness for post-secondary education, the workforce or military service. There has been a 78 percent increase in CCP courses taken this year.

In Lakota’s junior schools, the new Flight & Space elective, offered through a partnership with Butler Tech, engages seventh and eighth graders in hands-on, project-based learning. Students design, prototype and test models to learn about flight and space. Students in Ethan Hodge’s class at Liberty Junior School used Codrone EDU drones to learn programming and operation, culminating in the TRUST drone certification. The class covers topics like moon landings and Mars missions, inspiring students to explore careers in aviation and space.

This year, there has been a 78 percent enrollment increase in Lakota's College Credit Plus (CCP) courses.

INVEST IN YOUR GREENS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Boost your health by adding a generous serving of fresh greens to your daily diet. While both cooked and raw vegetables offer health benefits, consuming them raw often provides the most nutrients. Raw greens are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential vitamins, helping to lower inflammation and reduce the risk of disease.

DANDELION GREENS:

Dandelion greens are a nutritious and easy addition to any meal, perfect for salads or cooked dishes. They are rich in vitamins A, C, K, chlorophyll, and fiber, making them a great choice for digestion and overall health. Their light flavor and texture enhance salads and sandwiches.

BROCCOLI:

Broccoli is often hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that support overall health. Known for being high in vitamins A, C, and K, it also contains important minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium. In addition, it’s a rich source of beta-carotene, flavonoids, and fiber. Whether raw or cooked, broccoli is an excellent choice for immune system support, making it one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS:

Brussels sprouts are a highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable, known for their vitamin C, K, and folate content, as well as carotenoids and fiber. These vegetables can be shaved, sliced, sautéed, boiled, or grilled, offering a range of flavors from mild to bitter, depending on preparation.

KALE:

Kale is loaded with essential nutrients such as vitamins C, B6, E, K, and manganese. It contains twice as much selenium as spinach and is an excellent source of calcium. Kale’s unique properties help bind to cholesterol and lower oxalate levels, which promotes calcium absorption and makes it suitable for those prone to kidney stones. Additionally, it provides eye health benefits, thanks to lutein, and its disease-fighting properties make it a great addition to salads, smoothies, and more.

ARTICHOKES:

Artichokes are not only delicious but also packed with fiber, which aids in digestion. They are a great source of plant protein, potassium, and antioxidants like polyphenols. Artichokes also provide essential nutrients, including vitamins C, K, folate, magnesium, and B vitamins.

ASPARAGUS:

Asparagus is versatile and can be enjoyed grilled, sautéed, baked, or even raw. Packed with vitamins C, E, B, K, folate, and copper, it’s a great source of fiber. It also helps lower cholesterol and provides a variety of antioxidants that aid in healing. Asparagus is a perfect side dish that complements both light and robustly flavored meals.

SPINACH:

Spinach is a popular green known for its mild flavor and impressive nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins A, C, K, as well as magnesium, potassium, and iron, spinach is great for overall health. It also provides antioxidants that support eye health and includes calcium for stronger bones. However, because spinach has a higher oxalate content, it should be consumed in moderation by those with a history of kidney stones.
