Like Mother Like Daughter but Not Really! M

y mom is a woman of many talents, one of them being interior decorating. She passed it on to my sister, but skipped me and went straight to my daughter. They are able look at a room and just know how to make it look amazing. I unfortunately need to be told in order to see it, repeatedly. Even if I watch a design show with the before and after pictures, you would have thought that a magician had just performed the most amazing illusion in the world, I am that baffled! My mom brings her special talents to landscaping also. She and my step-dad Jim have created a beautiful patio paradise that was inspired by Joe T Garcia’s. It’s truly a sight to behold. I don’t think at 46 that I will wake up tomorrow and suddenly possess this talent, so I am just thankful I have her to tell me what I like. This month’s issue is about 3 family businesses that have been keeping Fort Worth homes beautiful for the past 70 plus years. Archie’s Gardenland (my mom’s favorite) started in 1934 so I think they know a thing or two about how your garden should grow. Randall Archie helped me start an indoor herb garden which I have kept alive longer than I ever thought possible. I love walking in that store because it’s like spring all year round! I want to thank a special reader that reached out to us recently, Lou Scott. Lou gave me a call one morning to ask if we would add her friend to our subscription list and share some of her thoughts on the magazine. Thank you Lou, your kind words made my day!

FOR 50 YEARS, BRUMBAUGH'S FINE HOME FURNISHINGS HAS DELIVERED THE BEST IN UPSCALE DECOR.

ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS PHOTOGRAPHY ANN BECK

oday, Brumbaugh’s Fine Home Furnishings has customers spread across the country, from New Jersey to Wyoming, along with a devoted clientele right here in Fort Worth. Known for its signature aesthetic, in-house line and glossy spreads in Texas Monthly, Brumbaugh’s beginnings may surprise new clients and longtime shoppers alike. “Larry started the company in 1966 with railroad salvage inventory,” says Sally Brumbaugh, wife of company-founder Larry. “He’d get a call from a freight company that may have had a derailment, and he’d make a bid and buy the inventory.” This early iteration of Brumbaugh’s was based on Fort Worth’s north side. As the years passed, Larry expanded his business and broadened his scope to include new home furnishings and carpet, which he eventually made into the business’s sole focus. “We did that for many years and still do,” says Sally. “Later, we transitioned into higher-end merchandise. Larry said, ‘Everybody can sell low-end, but not everyone can sell unique and high-end goods.’” Now located in the heart of Cowtown at 11651 Camp Bowie West, Brumbaugh’s Fine Home Furnishings has a well-defined western-chic look that homeowners and designers alike utilize for elegant decor. Visitors can browse the store’s massive showroom — which benefits from 50,000 square feet of space — and get a taste of Larry and Sally’s distinctive “Texas or Tuscan” style in everything from furniture to rugs, lamps to leathers, chandeliers and home accessories. While customers here in Fort Worth can take advantage of the showroom’s proximity, geographic distance has never foiled certain members of Brumbaugh’s following. “We have customers all over the United States, and people will fly in to shop here,” says Sally. “We just finished a home in Wyoming, 14

and have delivered furniture to customers in Oregon, Manhattan, Maryland, Florida, California, you name it.” A discerning homeowner wishes their interior to have a unified, identifiable ‘look,’ one that expresses certain ideals or a personal style. For someone who idolizes the rugged, individualistic ethos of the Old West, but also appreciates the finer things and a touch of elegance, Brumbaugh’s should appear as a dream made reality. Clients can decorate practically the entire home exclusively from Brumbaugh’s, which offers goods for the living and dining rooms, home offices and bedrooms.

You can also find accent pieces, hand-woven rugs and original, museum-quality art. Such is the degree of customer satisfaction that Brumbaugh’s can rely on referrals to supplement the business lured through its eye-catching advertising. Anyone who just happens across the showroom is also, of course, hooked. “Across the board, when people walk into our store, we hear ‘Wow, I’ve never seen this before!’” says Sally. “We sell everything from one-of-a-kind hand-knotted Persian rugs, to sofas and dining sets. Practically anything for a home.” This family business relies upon the expertise, eye for quality and shared tastes of Larry and Sally Brumbaugh. As the business celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016, it can look forward to the future thanks to the involvement of the Brumbaughs’ daughter, Elizabeth. Says the proud mother: “Elizabeth handles a lot of the design, a big part of the marketing and all of the commercials. She’s a Texas A&M graduate with a degree in finance and master’s in financial engineering.” Elizabeth also curates her own eponymous home furnishings collection, available only at Brumbaugh’s. A natural complement to Brumbaugh’s established look, the Elizabeth Collection injects a modern twist into the store’s trademark western chic decor. As Brumbaugh’s builds upon its decades of success, customers can look forward to an ever-expanding line, as the Elizabeth Collection captures the finest in contemporary furnishings. In addition to Sally, Larry and Elizabeth, the Brumbaugh’s family includes a committed team of employees. “We’re very blessed in regard to our employees,” says Sally. “We’ve had people work with us for 25 years, across multiple generations. One family now has its third-generation team member. We strive to foster a close environment, and certainly do have a family atmosphere.” It’s not just the employees that have staying power at Brumbaugh’s — it’s the customers. In business now for five decades, Brumbaugh’s credits the loyalty of a core clientele for its continued success. “People like the fact that we’ve been in business for 50 years,” says Sally. “We’ve had staying power, which is a direct reflection on Larry. People like coming in and seeing the owner, and he’s here six days a week.”

he Crystal Springs on the River development promises to transform west Fort Worth along White Settlement Road. This mixed-use entertainment, dining and residential project hearkens back to a time when the area hosted the Crystal Springs Dance Pavilion, a landmark dancehall often credited as the birthplace of Western swing. Among the many retail shops and upscale residences planned for the development, visitors will also be able to enjoy local and fresh cuisine. Todd Brown, the Fort Worth chef with 20 years experience and a devoted westside clientele, will open his first solo, standalone venture in the new development. 16

West FW Lifestyle | March 2016

CHEF TODD BROWN'S NEWEST VENTURE MAKES FINE DINING EASIER — AND FASTER — THAN EVER BEFORE.

Lettuce Cook Gourmet-on-the-Go is set to open this spring at 5101 White Settlement Road. The new hotspot will provide a home for Todd’s previous business, TCB Catering, along with much, much more. “You can come inside and grab something to-go, place orders or browse retail merchandise,” says Todd. “We’ll have a deli and fresh-prepared sandwiches you won’t find anywhere else, along with daily specials.” As with his catering business, Todd’s Lettuce Cook venture will highlight the highest-quality ingredients and healthy, delicious recipes. In order to offer the freshest possible ingredients, Todd plans to use vegetables and herbs grown on his family’s land in Weatherford.

“I don’t stack my fridges with 50 different things that sit there for a week,” says Todd. “We’ll have daily items to go along with the boutique deli, and if we’ve don’t have what you like, just put in a request and we’ll bring it to you.” Todd’s experience as a chef has included stints as the executive sous chef at the Ashton Hotel and executive chef at the Nutt House in Granbury, Texas. As a personal chef, Todd understands that service is an indispensable ingredient for a successful enterprise. Because of this, Lettuce Cook Gourmet-on-the-Go promises to make gourmet dining as convenient as any grab-and-go option. In addition to the deli and daily specials, patrons can take advantage of curbside service, meal prep options and home delivery. Want a week-long solution for dinner? Simply place an order to get your fridge stocked with delectable and inspired meals. Todd also plans to continue his catering services. “We’ll always be building onto the catering business,” says Todd. “Now we can serve larger parties, offer bigger and better things, and hopefully tackle weddings. With this new space, we can do everything from dinner for two to food for 500.” Sample specials could include honey lime wild caught halibut, or ground, grass-fed beef tossed with chopped kale and a side of creamy cauliflower. As for pre-made meals, imagine coming home to the knowledge that dinner was waiting: gourmet choices such as salmon

paired with roasted root vegetables, a creamy enchilada casserole, or even chicken strips and mac and cheese for the kids. The size and scope of the Crystal Springs development led Todd to brainstorm ways to better serve his new clientele. Construction and retail will bring a rush of workers to the area; when lunch rolls around, who wouldn’t want quality food available at a pinch? To satisfy this need, Todd hit upon an old school solution: the blue-plate special. “We’ll have steam tables set up to house our daily blue-plate special,” says Todd. “And we’ll also have our walk-up to-go menu.” With TCB Catering, Todd nurtured a clientele that grew to include 400-500 people. Along the way, he picked up a few strategies that he plans to offer everyone at Lettuce Cook. “We’ll have portfolios for our clients that track their likes and dislikes,” says Todd. “I want to know exactly what you want so we can cook for your needs. Lettuce Cook can be designed fresh for whoever comes in the door.” To help with these efforts, Todd can count on the assistance of his wife, Natalie, who will handle event coordinating and nutritional meal planning. For the success of his new endeavor, Todd will rely on the same qualities that have made him a beloved personal chef for dozens of Fort Worth families: delicious food, quality ingredients and personalized service. “Everything will contain the best ingredients I can find,” says Todd. “We’ll have something for everyone, so you can come on down, grab and go.” If you want to keep track of Todd’s progress, place orders, or simply look at photos of delicious food, check out on Facebook or LettuceCookGourmet.com.

pring is in the air, and with it the drive to go outdoors, enjoy the sunshine and get your hands dirty in the garden. Whether you

were born with a green thumb, or become “all thumbs” the moment you touch a spade, Archie’s Gardenland has the tools you need to become a successful home-harvester. Family-owned and operated since 1934, Archie’s Gardenland occupies an expansive and lush plot at 6700 Z Boaz Place. As any visitor to the store knows, Archie’s Gardenland lives up to its name as a visual cornucopia of plant life, with multiple greenhouses, hordes of seedlings, armies of trees, and a retail selection to make any big-box retailer blush. Owned by Rick and Randall Archie, whose great-grandfather, N.E. Archie Sr., started the business, Archie’s Gardenland exists to both spur and satisfy the craving to plant that sprouts up in the hearts and minds of Fort Worth homeowners. Though the expanse of Archie’s Gardenland can intimidate the uninitiated, the helpful and enthusiastic staff are quick to answer any and all questions. A primary question, however, is where to begin? If you’ve yet to plant a spring garden, or have begun projects that didn’t quite go as expected, you need more than a shopping list to realize your botanical dreams. Archie’s Gardenland — and Randall himself — are here to help, with tips and guidelines to help your garden flower.

SPRING PLANTING TIPS

The first key to a successful spring garden is to know when to plant. Even after a temperate winter, North Texas gardeners must remain vigilant for a late-season freeze. “Be cautious of what the weather is doing in early March,” says Randall. “Once you see a good 10-day forecast without frost or CONTINUED >

freezing temperatures, we recommend transplanting some 4-inch plants into the ground.” You can find a huge selection of small plants ready to transplant at Archie’s. Luckily, once you’ve checked the weather and gotten your new friends safely into the soil, the previous months’ sunny days will work in your favor. “The good news is that we’ve had a lot of sunshine this winter, so our local growers should be very happy,” says Randall. “Last winter it was really cloudy, so we had a lot of stuff that didn’t want to wake up.” For many gardeners, “when to plant” is all the guidance they need; for the rest of us, simple instructions to put the sprouts into the ground aren’t enough. How do we know the ground’s ready and how, exactly, do we actually plant? “You’ll want to work the soil beforehand and add amendments early so that they’ll break down as the plants need nutrients,” says Randall. “Don’t plant too deep, and keep the plants at the same level they’re at in their existing buckets.” Once your plants are in the ground, give them a good soaking to help them establish. After all, there’s nothing quite as disheartening as a row of small, dead plants. A few

Now that you’re appraised of how and what to plant this spring, you’ll want to make one (or several) trips to Archie’s Gardenland to stock up on seedlings, soil amendments and other supplies. While you’re there, you might find your attention drawn to a new component of Archie’s Gardenland: handcrafted outdoor furniture. “It’s all locally-made, outdoor tough and exclusive to us,” says Randall. “We wanted to have something unique for our customers, and there was a big demand for outdoor furniture.” Randall noticed that a lot of outdoor furniture simply cannot withstand the weather extremes of North Texas. Because of this, he contracted a welder with a local ornamental iron company to produce original, rugged and attractive pieces. “I call it ‘modern industrial-meets-Fort Worth backyard’ style,” says Randall. “It’s new for us this year, and we plan to offer things like fire pits, oversize benches and a smaller, adirondack-style chair.” ARCHIE'S GARDENLAND

Now Open OLIVER DYER TRANSFORMED HIS PARENTS' REPAIR SHOP INTO FORT WORTH'S PREMIER APPLIANCE RETAILER.

true family business has a memory and life all its own. It’s possible to identify the moment of its birth and trace its growth into maturity, as the decades pass and children — who grew up in the business — become owners. Dyer’s Automatic Washing Machine Repair first opened its doors in 1945. Five years later, the owners had a son named Oliver, who spent his childhood among the machines, tools and clientele of the Fort Worth repair shop. “I grew up hanging around the shop as a kid,” remembers Oliver. “As any kid would do in a repair shop, they’d give me something to tear apart, and I’d take my dad’s tools and put it back together. I’d go to the shop on Saturdays, and spend the summers there too.” So began the education that would lead to Oliver assuming the mantle of his parents’ business and making it truly his own. Today, Oliver Dyer’s Appliances occupies over 20,000 square feet at 8320 Camp Bowie West, and offers sales and service of a broad range of home appliances. From microwaves to air conditioners, and — of course — washers and dryers, Oliver Dyer’s has built a sterling reputation through customer service and a singular 60-year history in the community. It also helps that the boss understands the business, quiet literally, inside and out. “I started off doing home service and got my first service call when I was 16,” says Oliver. “Someone got sick one day and couldn’t show up, so I said ‘I could go fix that stuff.’ I went out to the customer’s house, and they had the same reaction I’d have now: ‘What are you doing here?’” Luckily, the young Oliver was already well-versed in repair, and his skill quickly allayed the customer’s concerns over his youthfulness. That first day saw a half-dozen more calls serviced by the 16-year-old repairman. When he returned to the shop and submitted his paperwork, his mother greeted him with a simple phrase: “She said, ‘Welcome to the real world,’” remembers Oliver. The son took over the parents’ business for good in 1970, and began retail sales just a couple years later. The first decade of Oliver’s watch saw a move to the west side and the construction of a new 22

building. The shift to retail necessitated a new focus on employee accountability, as Oliver wanted to ensure that every member of his business offered the same level of excellence as he did. “We built the business on excellent customer service,” says Oliver. “If you take care of the customers you have, they’ll send you your business. We take care of people and work through referrals. Before we’re through with a customer, we make sure that they’re happy enough to send us all their family members.” To both encourage and reward his staff, Oliver offers a unique performance-based compensation system. Hard work and attention to detail renders well-paid employees empowered to do whatever they need to satisfy Oliver Dyer’s customers. In line with this, Oliver gives each new hire a card that summarizes the business’s goals, mission, and beliefs about customers. The cards reads, in part: “To be the best major appliance sales and service business in Fort Worth. To accomplish this by treating our employees with the high degree of respect they deserve.” As a business philosophy, this employee-centric approach has yielded rich rewards for Oliver Dyer’s, not the least of which is an expert and veteran team. “I surveyed my employees once, and at the time, 15 of the 25 had been with us for more than 10 years,” says Oliver. “Collectively, they had 250 years of experience in the business.” Over the years, Oliver Dyer’s has become as much a part of west Fort Worth as the bricks that pave Camp Bowie, with an integrity and solidity to match. From the early days, when Oliver and his parents fixed the massive washers bolted to customer’s floors, to the sales and service of today’s modern appliances, one thing about Dyer’s has remained unchanged: devotion to its clientele. “Customers are the only reason for any business to exist,” says Oliver. “They are not dependent on us, but we are dependent on them. People bring us their wants and needs, and they get the most courteous and attentive treatment we can provide.”

Parting Thoughts

Gardening Success is a Fluid Situation WORDS DENISE SNODELL

A

ll along I considered Hosta the lazy gardener’s hero. These attractive, leafy plants thrive in the shade where many other pretty things will not. They sprout flowers now and then, and best of all, they come back every year. Plant once, kick back forever, I thought. I was so buzzed by the idea this elegant ground cover would reappear every spring. I would look like a pro, yet all I had to do was maybe throw in a little fertilizer, and then toss enough water their way. That was only if it didn’t rain enough. Each spring, as the shade took over my back and side yards, I planted even more Hosta. I discovered varieties with pretty patterns, and some solid ones with blueish or chartreuse tints. Some boasted interesting textures. Nature’s corduroy! (A description I assume master gardeners use.) No matter what type I selected, these beauties punctuated my yard with an air of paradise. Until… Wabbits. Last year, the deceptively cute furry creatures waged a war with me. The stole my easy Hosta lifestyle. Imagine my shock the first time I approached my favorite original plant—the monster bloomer-only to see its massive outer leaves chomped to shreds. “Noooo, not my big blue floppy Dumbo ear!” (That’s the scientific horticultural term.)

I dropped my hose and ran to the newer purchases on the side of the house, the ones I doggedly searched for in way too many nurseries. I had become picky about a certain crisp, creamy edged pattern on one particular variety, and I had to have it. (This one is known in the botanical world as The Cool Ones That Cost More.) My newbie plants were chewed down to the stems, like they were masquerading as chives. I hurried back indoors, revved up my search engine and found two recommended solutions: chicken wire or repellant spray. Chicken wire was out, for aesthetic reasons. Not to mention the effort. Imagine? But squirting a bottle of environmentally friendly stuff upon graceful leaves seemed simple enough. According to the directions, I just had to walk around, coat my Hosta with a fine mist, and laugh maniacally at the little hungry fur balls sharpening their teeth beneath the bushes. “Go try some dandelions, you picky little hipsters!” Despite this battle plan, there were a few problems. The main one being I was late to the boxing match. Nothing is more disheartening than dousing an invisible layer of protection on a half-destroyed garden. If only I had paid attention the previous week, before word got out on nature’s yelp reviews. However, the bigger glitch was me. Once I began spraying this “liquid chicken wire,” I was overcome. What was that…smell? I was hoping for something undetectable to humans, like a dog whistle, but for the nose. Or a scent similar to mosquito-repelling citronella, which is somewhat pleasant. But Eau de No Bunny? Even a Beatrix Potter plush toy would run away from its foul mist. Here’s the most delicate, glossy magazine way to describe my take on the scent: gentle pre-dawn wafts from the dampened streets of New Orleans’ French Quarter…the morning after Mardi Gras. That’s right: bottled hurl. So what’s this amateur gardener’s overall take on the liquid solution? It seemed to offer a total smack down on the problem. The stuff kept me out of the yard, so I didn’t even care if the Hosta were there or not.
