July memories... M
y very first 4th of July memory was with my family on the banks of the Trinity River, watching a reenactment of Washington crossing the Delaware River. This was the 1976 celebration of the 200th birthday of America. But it was nothing compared to the greatest day, July 3, 1976. On that magical night my sister Kerri and I were taken to see the KING, the one and only Elvis Arron Presley at the Tarrant County Convention Center. Our dad’s good friend Larry Edwards was “The Kings” biggest fan in Fort Worth. He was a good man that was babysitting two little girls and what better way to entertain them than to take them to see his hero. I can honestly tell you I have no memory of this show but I do have a sincere appreciation of his music and have met many impersonators since. July also meant it was time for my beloved Aunt LaLa’s annual cookout. I am very thankful for the 44 years I had with her. She was hilarious with the driest sense of humor and her laugh was contagious. We all loved seeing her and my mom interact because you never knew what story would be told. As I look at my cousins Craig, Becky, Gretchen and Curtis, I know that she lives on in each one of them. My Julys took on a whole new meaning in 1998 when the awesome John Pace Storey came into my life. Pace was born 55 years to the hour after my dad, Johnny. My grandfather JD ( John Dee) was also there to share in his arrival. I had three generations of Johns in one room and felt quite blessed. Fast forward now 17 years and I can tell you I still feel the exact same way I did July 28, 1998.

Feel Comfortable in Your Skin
A SKIN CHECK-UP WITH DR. LAURA MORRIS HELPS TAKE THE WORRY OUT OF SUMMER ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
W
hether it’s backyard grilling, afternoons poolside, or a game at the ballpark, summertime in Texas is synonymous with the outdoors. The hazards of the season — namely mosquitoes and sunburns — seem like a small price to pay for the freedom and exhilaration of fine weather and good times. No one wants to pay for their fun with their health, however. While sunburns fade and mosquito bites heal, damage from overexposure to the sun can have lingering and serious consequences. To take some of the worry out of summer, it’s advisable to schedule a check-up with a respected dermatologist. Dr. Laura Morris has served Fort Worth with care and attentiveness for over 20 years. Worried about what you might learn? Never fear, says Dr. Morris: “The good news is that 90 percent of the time, there’s nothing to worry about,” she explains. “People are afraid they’ll get bad news, and it prevents them from getting a check-up. Even if there’s something worrisome, almost everything is curable.” The need for an annual check-up becomes even more important for certain segments of the population. “Of course, fair-skinned people are the most at risk,” says Morris. “Also, people who had a lot of sunburns growing up, and those who spend a lot of time outside. People who enjoy the outdoors recreationally tend to not protect themselves as well as those who work outside.” While most people understand the threat of melanoma, its warning signs are not as well known. When it comes to moles and odd blemishes, Morris says to watch out for the ABCs: asymmetry, border, and color. 14
West FW Lifestyle | July 2015
“If a mole is a circle or oval, it’s probably fine,” says the doctor. “As for the border, it’s a good sign if it’s smooth. A single color is usually fine, while multi-colored spots and those that are black, white, and red are worrisome. Everything is relative, however, and these signs only mean that something needs to get checked." A check-up only takes about 10 minutes, and Dr. Morris strives to ensure the comfort of her patients. “Patients can simply take off their shirt for an examination of the back, chest, head and neck,” says Dr. Morris. "After that, we encourage patients to let us see their legs and feet. Modest patients are welcome to bring athletic shorts." As for those who feel self-conscious about their weight, Dr. Morris offers reassurance. “Listen, we could all stand to lose a few pounds,” she says. “We’re not here to lecture anyone. We just want to look at your skin, and that’s it.” The exam itself lasts only a few minutes, with the remainder of the time spent in conversation with the doctor. Should a patient need a removal, the procedure is virtually painless. As for daily practices to protect oneself, Morris has some tips: “I have been telling my patients to wear a zinc-oxide based sunscreen on the head and neck for normal days around town,” says Morris. “For that, try to find a sunscreen that’s 30 SPF. If you plan on sweating, go up to 50 SPF, and consider a sport spray that comes with an insect repellent.” Wise advice from a wise woman; heed Morris’s guidelines for your skin, and you can count on many more years of fun in the sun.

Journey Into History THIS OCTOBER, FORT WORTH WELCOMES CLASSIC MILITARY VEHICLES TO THE HISTORIC BANKHEAD HIGHWAY ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
F
rom Jack Kerouac’s On the Road to seminal movies such as Easy Rider, Americans have always appreciated the symbolic importance of highways. Iconic roads such as Route 66 represent intrinsic traits of the American character: adventure, possibility, and the exhilaration of freedom. Texas’s Bankhead Highway stands alongside Route 66 as one of the preeminent early transcontinental highways. The road originally spanned 850 miles and passed through Fort Worth on its way from Texarkana to El Paso. The route persists to this day, and local history buffs can appreciate remnants of it — such as the grade separation on Vickery Boulevard — right here in Fort Worth. In early October, the Bankhead Highway will come back to life as the vein of transport for a remarkable and historic convoy. The Military Vehicle Preservation Association, a non-profit group with an international membership, will travel the Bankhead Highway as part of a journey from Washington D.C. to San Diego, California. Zim Zimmerman, city councilman for District 3, has served as the contact for the MVPA’s passage through Fort Worth. “The convoy will reach Fort Worth on Sunday, October 3rd,” says Zimmerman. “They’ll enter the city via Interstate 30, then take Lancaster to Camp Bowie for a stop at Farrington Field.” Those who catch the convoy en route will witness a sight seemingly plucked from the past. Faithfully restored vehicles from some of the most important conf licts of the 20th century find new life through the

stewardship of MVPA members. Observers can see the passage of everything from armored transports, to jeeps and military motorcycles. Once at Farrington Field, the convoy will take a two day break from the road, and welcomes the public to come appreciate the vehicles and informative displays. “The public can plan to arrive at Farrington Field around mid-morning on Sunday,” says Zimmerman. “The MVPA welcomes anyone who wants to take a look at the vehicles, and also plans to host a couple of events while here.” The MVPA’s 2015 convoy serves as the latest iteration of sponsored trail rides that have seen the historic vehicles crisscross North America. The 2009 Transcontinental Convoy retraced the route of the first United States Army crossing of the country. The 2012 convoy traveled through the Alaskan wilderness along the ALCAN highway. The 2015 Bankhead Highway Convoy will retrace the U.S. Army’s 1920 coastto-coast journey, and bring to life one of the most important transcontinental trips of modern history. Those who want to see the vehicles in person can visit Farrington Field between October 3rd and the morning of the 5th. The MVPA currently needs local sponsors to support Fort Worth's efforts. For more information visit MVPA.org, or contact Zim Zimmerman’s office via sandi. breaux@fortworthtexas.gov.

25 Years of
Concerts in the Garden The summer series celebrates a quarter-century of exceptional performances.
ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BRIAN LUENSER
A
s summertime traditions go, few cities have anything to compete with Fort Worth’s Concerts in the Garden. For more than 20 years, the concert series has combined the lush magnificence of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden — one of the oldest botanical gardens in the country — with stirring musical performances. Without fail, the concerts draw huge numbers from all walks of life, and stand as celebrations of Fort Worth’s cultural identity. The 2015 season is the 25th anniversary of this communion between nature and music. Brought to the gardens through a partnership with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, this season will have showcased 16 concerts between June 5th and July 5th. In honor of this landmark achievement, we spoke with Amy Adkins, president and CEO of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.
18
West FW Lifestyle | July 2015
Concerts in the Garden has developed into one of the Metroplex's premier event series. What was the original intent behind its foundation, and how has it changed over the years? The Concerts in the Garden Summer Music Festival, presented by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, was established in 1991 with a series of three performances held at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. The original goals of the festival have remained the same from the beginning to today – to reach a larger and more diverse audience, to provide a comfortable and affordable opportunity for families to enjoy the FWSO, and to serve our community outside of our traditional concert hall. In the meantime, the festival has become one of the rituals of Cowtown, with people from all walks of life coming by the thousands to hear the orchestra and guest entertainers perform under the stars. What goes into the selection of performers? Are there any perennial favorites? Surprise successes? Diversity of programming is a hallmark of Concerts in the Garden. The FWSO artistic staff design a summer season to include something for all musical tastes, from Tchaikovsky to Led Zeppelin, and everything in between. Perennial favorites include the patriotic Old-Fashioned Family Fireworks Picnic shows on July 2-4; “The Music of the Eagles,” which we have presented to sold-out crowds for eight consecutive years; and the Laser Light Spectacular, during which the lawn fills with young Star Wars fans sporting their own lightsabers.
How did the partnership develop between the symphony and the botanic garden? In what ways do you see this partnership as mutually beneficial? The FWSO initiated the partnership with the Botanic Garden because we identified it as an ideal outdoor venue to present music. We have enjoyed a collaborative relationship for the past 25 years: the symphony benefits through access to the most beautiful and accessible venue in the city, and the performances provide an essential source of revenue. We also enjoy the support of the skilled staff of the Botanic Garden, who facilitate the operation of the venue. More than 45,000 people attend these events, which attracts new visitors to the garden. The Botanical Society operates and receives all proceeds from food and novelty concessions, as well as a percentage of ticket sales. CONTINUED >
25 YEARS OF CONCERTS (CONTINUED)
DO YOU HAVE ANY NUMBERS THAT REFLECT THE EVENT'S GROWTH OVER THE YEARS? DO YOU EXPECT IT TO CONTINUE TO GROW?
Attendance for our inaugural Concerts in the Garden in 1991 (with only three concerts) totaled 4,426 with revenue of approximately $32,000. Now, we annually reach nearly 45,000 through 16 to 17 performances with annual revenue of nearly $1.5 million, which includes sponsorships. It is important to note that support from our major sponsors enables us to maintain the affordability of these performances. Two of our sponsors have supported Concerts in the Garden since its inception: BNSF Railway and the Crystelle Waggoner Charitable Trust, the latter of which underwrites free admission on the lawn for children 10 and under. Wells Fargo joined the Festival in 1997, XTO Energy in 2008, Frank Kent Motor Company in 2009, and Central Market in 2013.
If you haven’t had a chance to experience a garden concert this year, make sure to catch one of the two final events. July 2nd through 4th will see the return of one of Fort Worth’s favorite traditions: the Old-Fashioned Family Fireworks Picnic. Each evening at 8:15 p.m., guests at the garden can experience thrilling fireworks and patriotic music from the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. From England with Pub NICK GREGORY'S ADVENTURES HAVE TAKEN HIM AROUND THE WORLD -- AND BACK TO FORT WORTH ARTICLE DOUGLAS MATUS | PHOTOGRAPHY KAT SWIFT
D
os Equis’s Most Interesting Man in the World has nothing on Fort Worth’s Nick Gregory. The British-born owner of two of the Metroplex’s finest pubs, Ye Olde Bull & Bush and the Royal Falcon, has led a life spread across multiple continents. Nick’s lengthy career in aviation — he received his first license back in the 70s — saw him flying planes in exotic locales such as Sudan and Saudi Arabia. The pilot felt a pull to Texas, however, and landed here to bring Fort Worth a taste of authentic English pub culture. All pilots are perhaps fueled by wanderlust to some extent. Nick can credit his own case of the travel bug to a pair of globetrotting parents. Though born in Lancashire, Nick spent much of his youth in Africa. “Mum and dad traveled a lot, and most of my formative years were spent in West Africa,” says Nick. “At a certain point they got worried I might go bush on them, and sent me off to boarding school in England.” After school, Nick spent some time enlisted in Her Majesty’s Navy, a stint that ended with what he calls a “polite release.” A period of wandering preceded the discovery of his true passion: flight. “Like a lot of young folks, I drifted around for a bit,” says Nick. “Spent some time studying speech and drama, got a couple qualifications. Then I discovered aviation, which really caught my attention.” Nick received his private pilot’s license in the United Kingdom, but the expense of study prevented him from pursuing the field further. A flight instructor, sympathetic to Nick’s plight, suggested study in Fort Worth as a more cost-effective alternative. The year was 1979, and though Nick relocated to Sudan after his training, Fort Worth left an impression. The pilot’s time in East Africa came to an unexpected end with the outbreak of the Second Sudanese Civil War. “I was in the UK at the time, and received a message that I shouldn’t go back,” says Nick of the war. “My brother-in-law in England owned a pub, and I worked there for a bit just for grins.” Though this represented Nick’s first exposure to the professional side of pubs, he already had a deep respect and fascination for pub culture. “When you’re English, you grow up with an appreciation for what pubs are all about,” says Nick. “They’ve been a part of British culture for ages. People used to make their own beer, and someone might develop a reputation for it. They’d then open the front room of their home to neighbors, and the house would become a public house. The term stuck.”
22
West FW Lifestyle | July 2015
A stint in Africa and a period of time in Saudi Arabia became interspersed with additional forays into the British pub scene. Nick eventually found his way back to Texas and opened his first pub in 1993. Though that effort failed, it presaged Nick’s creation of Ye Olde Bull & Bush in 1999. Over the past 16 years, the pub has evolved alongside its city and a loyal customer base. In 2009, Nick built upon his success with the opening of the Royal Falcon. Nick’s original motivation for opening a pub was to provide a wider variety of beer than found in the typical bar. A lot has changed in the intervening years, with massive beer selections now commonplace; the English pub — the model upon which Nick developed his businesses — still has much to differentiate itself from the typical bar, however. “A pub is a people place,” explains Nick, “whereas a bar might be full of loud music, lots of drinking, and that sort of thing. One of the best compliments I ever got came from one of my regulars. He said that the reason he thoroughly enjoyed the place was that, after a tough day, he could sit down, have a beer, and still feel challenged by the conversation. That’s what it’s all about: relaxation and a lack of pressure.” In addition to the atmosphere, patrons of Ye Olde Bull & Bush and the Royal Falcon can also enjoy an excellent selection of brews. The British theme ensures that staples such as Guinness remain in stock, and Nick stays abreast of the beer world to continually offer new selections. As for his “daily specials,” Nick places a clear emphasis on one thing: “As a customer, the most important event on a daily basis is you,” says Nick. “You are the daily topic of conversation. The crux of the pub business rests on one word: people. People come first, and if you take care of them, the drinks and everything else will take care of itself.”

E

Independence Day only comes once a year, so make it count and invite your favorite guests over for a memorable event. You’ll go out with a bang when you serve up these palate-pleasing dishes at your patriotic party.
ALL-AMERICAN BURGER
“For a red, white and blue burger that tastes as good as it looks, I use ground bison on a brioche bun, topped with Castello Burger Blue Cheese,” says celebrity chef Michael Symon. We think it’s well worth the try too! For more recipes, visit CastelloCheeseUSA.com. BISON BURGER WITH BLUE CHEESE
Recipe courtesy of Michael Symon Servings: 4 • Kosher Salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 pound ground bison, loosely packed into burger patties • 4 slices Castello Burger Blue cheese • 4 brioche-style soft hamburger buns, toasted • 1 small red onion, very thinly sliced into rings • 1 cup arugula Heat your grill to medium-high heat. Season burgers with salt and freshly ground black pepper on both sides. Drizzle with olive oil, then place on grill. Cook 3 minutes, then flip. Add slices of blue cheese (1 slice per burger), and let cook another 1–2 minutes. Remove burgers from grill and place patties on toasted buns. Top each burger with slice of red onion and 1/4 cup of arugula. Serve on a festive red, white and blue platter to complete the experience. 26

PATRIOTIC AND PERFECTLY SWEET
This July Fourth, serve a classic summer favorite— watermelon. This yummy fruit boasts sweetness and nutrition at a great value. Loaded with vitamins A, B6 and C, as well as antioxidants and heart-healthy amino acids, it’s a most a welcome addition to your spread. For more recipes, visit Watermelon.org. RED, WHITE AND BLUE WATERMELON CAKE
Servings: 6–8 • 1 seedless watermelon • 1 cup low or no fat natural vanilla flavored yogurt • 1 cup sliced almonds • 1 cup blueberries • 1 cup sliced strawberries Place watermelon on its side on cutting board. Cut 3–5 inches off each end to create a large center slice between 3–5 inches in depth. Trim off outer rind. Cut watermelon slice into 6–8 pie-shaped wedges. Blot edges with paper towels to absorb excess moisture. Dip the back (curved) side of each slice in yogurt and then almonds, re-assembling pieces on serving platter as each piece is completed. When finished, it will look like a piecrust of almonds around watermelon slices. Frost the top of the reassembled watermelon with the remaining yogurt and decorate the top with an assortment of colorful berries. Serve cold.

Parting Thoughts
Summer Games WORDS JIM CROSGROVE
“O
lly olly oxen free!” Do kids play “Kick the Can” any more? Or “Flashlight Tag”? Or “Ghost in the Graveyard”? Or “Red Rover”? Do they even play outside in the evenings? When I was a kid, all the moms on the block would start calling us home when the street lights came on. And whoever happened to be “it” would shout out the all-safe signal “Olly olly oxen free” (we all used the phrase, but nobody knew exactly why). Like a herd of sweaty little oxen smelling like sidewalk, we’d come galloping from the shadows back toward our respective bug-yellow porch lights. On our block alone there were more than 20 kids – granted nearly half of them lived at our house – but there was always enough on any given night to field a couple of teams for Wiffle Ball or “Capture the Flag”. Shortly after dinner, neighbor kids would start gathering in our yard. We lived on a corner lot that was just the right size for a playing field for any sport. My poor father tried to grow grass every spring, but it was a losing battle. By June there were permanent base paths worn into the turf. And no matter how much he griped and groaned about the kids trampling his grass, he couldn’t deflate the pride I felt in having a yard that was the epicenter of activity.
34
West FW Lifestyle | July 2015
For hours we would play outside. And we played hard. Running, falling, scraping, crying, laughing, and peeing in the bushes because we didn’t want to run home. I even broke my arm playing “Red Rover” when Peggy McShane and Dana Rowland let go of their hands right as I was about to bust through their grip, sending me rolling down the hill behind them. And I swear I had a semi-permanent ring of chigger bites around my waste that lasted all summer. We were having way too much fun to care about the chiggers or the thick humid air or the slimy slugs we stepped on in our bare feet or all the other natural things that now persuade us to stay cooped up in our air-conditioned houses watching reruns of The Andy Griffith Show. I can’t tell you the last time I had a chigger bite. I don’t even know if the critters exist any more. Are they extinct? Either I’ve been lathered up with too much toxic bug repellant lately, or I don’t roll around in the grass enough. And I don’t know that my girls have even had a chigger bite. Well all of that is going to change this summer. My goal is teach my girls and the other neighbor kids the ins-and-out of “Kick the Can”. I pledge to sweat more and not be bothered by it. And I am going to do everything I can to rack up a few chigger bites.
