THE RESURGENCE OF THE TRAVEL AGENT A 1000 MILE JOURNEY FOR HOPE A JOURNEY THROUGH MUSIC WITH MICHAEL RICHARDSON

hhh… There’s no place like home! Then again, there’s no place like an all inclusive resort on a tiny island where your cell phone doesn’t work and the internet is considered a myth. I don’t know about you, but my house doesn’t have room service or a room that magically cleans itself while you’re out stimulating the local economy. There’s also no place like your favorite hangout, where local musicians take you on a musical journey through time or walking a mile in someone else’s shoes with the hope of making their journey through life just a little bit better. My wife and I love to travel, to immerse ourselves in someplace different. Two years ago we decided to jump on a Southwest flight to New Orleans for Jazz Fest. We immediately fell in love with that city, with its rich history and culture, with its music, and most importantly for me, with the food. I made sure to have at least six solid meals a day. It left such an impression in our hearts that we got married there one year later. It was the best idea we’ve ever had. In this issue, we will explore several kinds of journeys. Fred West, a local travel agent extraordinaire, will show you that travel agents aren’t a dying breed.

High Fidelity in West Fort Worth BIG MIKE’S SOULFUL ROCK AND COUNTRY ARTICLE MATT SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY EL HICKS PHOTOGRAPHY & KAT SWIFT

L

ocal music legend, Mike Richardson, credits the beginning of his love affair with music to three older sisters -- one having graduated high school in 1969, another in ‘73, the third in ‘80. Richardson, better known as Big Mike, graduated considerably later from Denison High School with the class of ‘90. “I used to get my sister’s hand-me-down records,” Richardson says. “Was rabid for music from the time I was 3 or 4. I used to carry a suitcase of 45s around the house and knew the songs from the labels before I could even read. “My mother would always come home with cheap 45s from garage sales once she figured out I really liked them. She also let me buy records when we were at the department store. From there, everything I could beg, borrow or steal, 45s, albums, 8-tracks.” Forty-two years on the collector’s bug holds strong. Pics of whichever of his 4,500 and growing collection of vinyl he’s playing at the moment litter Richardson’s Facebook page. One post links to his contribution to “Antiques Roadshow,” a rare first pressing of Stevie Wonder’s debut. “Fort Worth’s Doc’s Records & Vintage is awesome!,” Richardson says. Being the baby of the family had advantages. “I was almost an only child, a happy surprise,” Richardson says. “My dad was happy to finally have a boy.” Richardson’s parents — they caught Hank Williams live on their honeymoon — influenced his love of country, and nurtured his desire to play music. “Nobody in my family played an instrument,” Richardson says. 12 West FW Lifestyle | June 2014

“But we had a piano in the house and I half-heartedly took lessons. Now I’m a frustrated, but not fluent, player.” His instrument of choice is guitar; he started learning that at age 13. “I also play enough mandolin to get by and want to learn banjo but haven’t yet,” Richardson says. Richardson played with several bands throughout high school then enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Pharmacy. He quit, “got disillusioned,” after a year and landed in Fort Worth in 1997. A CV of bands Richardson has formed or been associated with since is impressive to say the least. But probably no more so than many a local performer. No, it’s the breadth and styles that amazes. Rock, soul, country, little it seems escapes Richardson’s purview. Disparate, on the face, bands ranging from prog, to funk to Neil Young to the Police and Duran Duran. His latest, Electric Church, tackles Hendrix. Two occasional bands, the Odors (it’s an anagram), channel the Doors while Puce Floyd, well, that’s obvious. Puce Floyd blessedly travel much past Pink Floyd circa ‘72 — because no one really needs to hear songs from “Dark Side of the Moon” or “The Wall” again anyway — complete with a Syd Barrett tune or two in the mix. Choate Country, a take on George Strait’s “Strait Country” album, delivers classic Waylon, Cash and Willie, Nick Choate being a local producer, musician and buddy of Richardson’s. “I get bored playing one style too long without a change up,” Richardson explains of his all-over-the-map muse. “I get the idea for the bands first, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to do an all Neil Young

band?’ then fish around for musicians. Not having anyone to play off or chum around with at the shows can get boring and stagnant. “I look at it as being an interpreter, not a tribute band, never use that phrase, more a celebration of their music.” Richardson often performs solo, an everything mix of ‘60s to ‘90s, but “gets burned out on that” from time to time and heeds the call to form another band. Plaudits followed. Dazey Chain, a soul/funk review, featuring Richardson, Jeff Dazey, Josh Weathers and others worked the TCU kiddos packed Moon into “an ecstatic jam, the atmosphere was electric,” according to a DFW.com review. Robbie Turman, owner of The Mule Pub and Oscar’s Pub, agrees. “I’d like to book Big Mike every night,” Turman says. “He does his solo stuff at our places and sets up with his guitar and tip jar. It’s pretty amazing to watch him go and take requests from people. If he doesn’t know something, I’ve seen him look it up online and wing it, and do a great job of it.” Richardson and company deliver excitement as witnessed by a peek at several YouTube videos posted. Search Big Mike’s BOR (stands for Box of Rock) @ Lola’s for proof. Whether it’s Hendrix, Robert Plant or Tears for Fears’ Roland Orzabal Richardson is interpreting he sounds enough like them to get the point across without degenerating into slavish imitation or the over reverence so many performers fall prey to. Expect variety, but don’t expect much past 1990. Richardson remains smitten with the music of his parents and sister’s generations. “I had my metal phase, Iron Maiden,” Richardson says. “And I listened to some contemporary music cause of friends and all in high school. But even then I was listening to stuff 20, now 40 years past contemporary. “The Western tonal system, there’s not much more to be done with it. The way stuff was recorded, the mind set in studios back then, my ears lean toward that. It’s not that I don’t want good new music. It’s just that what’s out there is not in my wheelhouse. About 90 percent of the new music I listen to is local bands instead of national stuff.” Surprisingly, Richardson almost never writes songs and has released no CDs. “I’ve tried a few times, but it never works out and I don’t really enjoy it.” Nevertheless, he remains committed to performing. “I worked for Albertson’s until 2009 when I decided to quit and just do music,” Richardson says. “I was having to turn down at least one to two gigs a week because of my day job and was burning the fuse at both ends a bit much. I knew one had to go, and I wasn’t gonna quit gigging, so...” Richardson plays throughout Fort Worth and the Metroplex regularly including solo shows every Wednesday night at Tolbert’s in Grapevine and the first Sunday of each month at Rodeo Goat. est Side is the best side; I say it often. I often wish I had a reality camera following my food endeavors. It usually involves good drink, paired with a fine meal from scratch by a dear friend or myself. Mix in gobs of laughs and countless stories about days of when, and you have one heck of a good time to earmark in your life story. I hate to toot my own horn, but I’ll gloat and say that I feel I have a great palate for f lavors, smells and spices. It’s more or less having a great appreciation for basically anything edible, and being able to combine it with what our maker has provided us. I’ve never been one to be afraid of texture, or appearance, or its raw state prior to kissing its second demise (possibly a skillet or a grill). Food is endless play. Enough said. If you’re a native Fort Worthian, you may already know Natalie Pennel and Todd Brown, a born and bred West Side duo. They co-operate TCB Catering, an escalating local favorite. They specialize in concierge catering and personal on site chef demonstrations. Both grew up in the beautiful rolling streets of West Fort Worth (Rivercrest and Ridglea Hills), surrounded by the mature oak trees and neighborhood kids racing each other on their bikes for blocks on end. Todd and Natalie graciously allowed me to hover over their spicing and dicing, as they personally prepared a surprise birthday dinner. Crossing the threshold of a beautiful home in Rivercrest, the theme was Jamaican luau, and Sally’s Floral created some breathtaking centerpieces for this colorful surprise. Now you can’t do tropical and not have some succulent surf and turf to enjoy, can you? Each lobster tail was steamed to tender perfection adorning a perfect center cut tenderloin. Natalie is what I would describe as a “salad goddess;” her heart is in health driven creations. She has a special knack for combining light, supremely fresh fruits and vegetables with flakey flavorful fish selections. By the way, her homemade tangy and fruity chutneys are off the charts. Natalie’s salad for this luau theme was a leafy, refreshing hearts of romaine, topped with 14 West FW Lifestyle | June 2014

mango chutney, diced avocados, hearts of palm, shallots and pine nuts tossed with light San Pasqual dressing. She is merely self taught like me, holstering a love for creating and combining ultimate freshness. Natalie primarily works for Steed Investments, specializing in financial planning along with oil and gas bookkeeping. Outside of that, she is graciously booking and cooking for TCB. Her hobby and talent of being a foodie is quickly making its way to the top as a Fort Worth favorite by popular and constant demand. In addition to the production of each masterpiece making its way to the plate, the extra fun part of this foodie experience is the conversation. Every chef I’ve ever met can zero in methodically on the task at hand, all the while sharing intriguing stories. Todd told me about discovering his love of food as a teenager working for Joe T. Garcia’s. Following

graduation from Heights, he pursued his love for food at the Culinary School of the Rockies in beautiful Boulder, Colo. He then followed his passion, and took position as an assistant professor in the recognized culinary arts department of University of Northern Arizona. You only learn by self discovery and this true chef is self taught as well. He climbed his way to culinary excellence by way of his own palate. Todd’s achievements include recognition from exclusive executive chefs. He prevailed in culinary contests specifically to hotel and restaurant management. Earlier in his career his desire to work with the best was so great, at one point he started in the steamy dish pit just to get to get his foot in the door of the elite Boulder Cork. Within a few shorts months his work ethic was recognized, and he landed the title of sous chef. Todd was offered the opportunity to represent and cook at some of the best restaurants in Las Vegas but chose to stay where his culinary heart was…in good ole Fort Worth, Texas. He served as executive chef of The Nutt House and downtown’s Angeluna before going solo. I personally think he made a good choice.

My foodie approach is to educate you on some of the hidden local talent. I want to introduce you to some insanely talented and humble self taught chefs and food aficionados that may have a recipe or two to share with you. Food is after all what brings people together in any circumstance. Cheers! TCB Catering- For extensive information regarding booking and menus contact Natalie Pennel 817.821.1621

A Passion for Fashion LOCAL COMPANY HELPS PEOPLE PROJECT THEIR BEST SELF ARTICLE DOUG MATUS

n 1983, BJ Wilson was an administrative assistant with an interest in fashion and a desire to earn some extra money. From these humble beginnings, when Wilson found clients through direct-mail advertising and a network of friends and work acquaintances, BJ Wilson and Company grew to become Fort Worth’s premier wardrobe consulting firm. Today, Wilson helps clients around the United States develop styles that showcase their individual personalities and natural beauty. BJ Wilson and Company, located at 4717 Fletcher Avenue in Fort Worth, employs a team of consultants and has served more than 5,000 clients over the course of its history. Most recently, Wilson has channeled her business, retail and fashion knowledge into an e-learning venture. Knowledge is Sales, based on Wilson’s book, “Steps to Becoming a Wardrobe Consultant,” stands as a one-ofa-kind online curriculum that educates fashion students and professionals on the ins-and-outs of the retail industry. “Everything I’ve done here, I’ve developed,” says Wilson of her business model and consulting techniques. Wilson recognizes that a well-rounded wardrobe requires not only knowledge of trends and situation-appropriate attire, but also the ability to choose flattering colors and styles. Most people have encountered 16 West FW Lifestyle | June 2014

the problem of a closet-full of clothes, but seemingly nothing to wear. Wilson sees the difficulty as two-fold: a lack of organization and clothing to reflect the changing necessities of the seasons. Wilson developed her “Four Seasons” system to provide clients with a wardrobe they can adapt throughout the year. Wilson’s success in this is apparent in the loyalty of her clients, some of whom have utilized her services for over two decades. BJ Wilson and Company’s initial wardrobe consultation occurs in-home, and involves closet assessment, organization, seasonal separation and the formulation of a shopping list. Additional services include personal shopping, photo-shoots and a packing service that helps clients prepare for trips or vacations. On the subject of vacations, BJ Wilson has some advice: “Pick a color scheme so you don’t over pack, and so that everything coordinates. The idea should be to make several outfits from a small selection of clothing.” What does Wilson see as hot for the upcoming travel season? Black and white, a simple color scheme with infinite possibilities. To make the style all your own, pick a favorite color for accent pieces. “It’s not just about clothes, it’s about someone feeling confident. It’s amazing what a balanced wardrobe can do for someone,” says Bobbie McCurdy, marketing director for BJ Wilson and Company. Wilson and her team seek to craft an individual image for every client, that evolves along with the client themselves. “The emphasis is not on selling clothes,” says Wilson, “but on helping our clients achieve their fashion goals. It’s about helping people project their best self.”

The Resurgence of the Travel Agent These great resources are not a dying breed, and can do more than you may realize.

ARTICLE ANN E. BUTENAS

A

re you ready to make your passport your favorite book? If you want to make it a real page-turner, then it’s time to get off the couch and get some ink on those passport pages with some exciting travel arrangements. However, before you log onto the Internet and search endless travel and vacation sites, until your vision is blurred and your fingertips are numb from clicking computer keys, consider an approach that is a bit more traditional. Call your local travel agent. No, they are not a dying breed. They are a hidden gem, and when you understand exactly how they can make all of your travel dreams come true, you can unleash yourself from the nightmare of having to find what you believe to be the best deal online. Even though the Internet has definitely made finding seemingly great vacation deals a snap, do you really know what you might be getting yourself into? While you can certainly go online and access any number of travel planning sites, the traditional travel agent can normally get far better deals for you, not to mention extra perks along the way. “We find deals you just won’t find online on your own,” emphasizes Fred West, travel agent extraordinaire with Sanders Travel Centre in Fort Worth. “We have trainers come in to our office almost every day to tell us what is new in the travel industry.” Sanders Travel Centre is small, independently owned luxury 18 West FW Lifestyle | June 2014

travel agency that specializes in corporate, group and individual travel to all international and domestic locations. They can also assist with destination weddings and honeymoons. When it comes to your travel plans, there is literally nothing they can’t do. You can scroll through endless information online for hours and hope for the best when it comes to nailing down your long-awaited travel plans, or you can just pick up the phone and call your local travel agent, who specializes in planning the best vacation you can ever imagine. Once they put their knowledge, skills and experience to work for you, the end result will be music to your ears, sand in your toes, or snowflakes on your eyelashes, whichever you prefer. “A travel agent is your advocate,” says West. “If you have any

questions or concerns about your travel arrangements, we are just a phone call away. That is probably not the kind of service you will receive from those online travel sites.” West is confident that, as a travel agent, he can find a far superior deal with more bells and whistles than one could acquire online. “We have relationships with our vendors and suppliers and can find deals you won’t find anywhere else,” he emphasizes. “We also believe that a person’s vacation should be a rewarding experience and one that is given the utmost care.” A travel agent can plan and prepare any trip you desire…the sky is no longer the limit. “Sanders Travel has an exclusive partnership with Virgin Galactic and can even book you a trip to outer space,” notes West. (In case you are wondering, they have already sold a few tickets!) Your travel agent covers all details from start to finish and will prepare an itinerary that addresses even the easily overlooked details, one of which is travel insurance. A travel agent knows the importance and value of insurance and can help the rookie traveler select the best plan to fit their needs. “A vacation is a big investment, but as with anything in life, things can happen,” stresses West. “If you are injured or become sick while on your vacation or something happens before you even leave town, travel insurance covers injuries, sickness, death, lost baggage and even delayed baggage. It is not that expensive and will afford you peace of mind, knowing that if the unexpected should happen, you will not lose the money you invested into this trip.” Your travel agent understands that people often overlook important details. It is easy to get caught up in getting the cheapest price, while losing sight of the whole reason for booking the trip: a fantastic vacation. A cheap hotel that is located far from what you want to see and do can end up costing you more with the hassle of finding and paying for transportation, not to mention wasted time and energy. “I am trained to do this work. I know what I am looking for and will find the best deals. Why become overwhelmed with all of the online options when we can find you a better deal?” stresses West. “We make travel so easy. It’s your vacation. It should be stress-free. Just let us handle everything. It has to be perfect and flawless, and that is what I strive to do for my clients. I have a passion for travel and for people and will always go the extra mile when it comes to my clients.”

“I am trained to do this work. I know what I am looking for and will find the best deals. Why become overwhelmed with all of the online options when we can find you a better deal?” From the moment you land at your destination, the travel agent will have every detail covered, from that first transfer to your hotel to your return flight home and everything in between. He does the work. You have the fun. These fourth-generation farmers, raised on a vineyard, passed their knowledge onto their own children, who helped with the foundation of LangeTwins Winery in 2006. FROM VINE TO BOTTLE

o other agriculturists know the unique demands, or sweet rewards, associated with grape growing like winemakers and grape growers. Winemaking and grape growing are often mutually dependent professions, as growers and vintners draw upon vast and exclusive stores of knowledge. Some vintners, however, nurture their product from the vine to the bottle, which allows for the realization of a unique, personal vision. One such vintner, the LangeTwins family of Lodi California, has a topto-bottom commitment to crafting wine, with flavorful finished products sprung from soil they have tilled for five generations.

A FAMILY TRADITION

In the 1870s, Johann and Maria Lange became some of the earliest settlers of Lodi, Calif., a sleepy farming community that grew with the advancement of the railroad. The Langes began a 22 West FW Lifestyle | June 2014

family farm that initially specialized in non-irrigated watermelons. In 1916, the Langes, along with their son, Albert, expanded their plantings to include grapes. Albert’s son, Harold Lange, came along in 1920, and father and son grew the

The LangeTwins family believes that great wine begins in the vineyard. Most winemakers purchase their grapes from independent growers and rely upon their vintners to craft unique creations from a common stock. LangeTwins is different. With experience as growers that dates back to the first decades of the 20th century, LangeTwins fosters an exceptional product from the vine to the bottle, and draws upon the yields of their very own estate vineyards. For decades, other wineries used LangeTwins family winegrapes for their wines. Since 2006, when the family built in a state-of-the-art facility, they have poured their passion for growing into the art of winemaking. As demand for LangeTwins wines grows, the family continues to develop their winemaking facilities, and also provides for private label and custom wine services.

California’s Lodi Appellation is a federally recognized viticulture area famed for its Mediterranean climate. Lange Twins Winery makes excellent use of this environment with a broad selection of wines produced with grapes harvested from the LangeTwins family’s Lodi vineyards. LangeTwins Estate wines are crafted in a traditional manner and priced for everyday enjoyment. The 2011 Zinfandel, made with a blend of grapes harvested from both 100-year-old and youthful vines, stands as LangeTwins’ offering of the most well regarded Lodi varietal. The 2011 Zinfandel presents a deep garnet color, with notes of blueberry, cherry and black pepper, with a smoky oak nose. LangeTwins Reserve wines stand as the ultimate testament to the expressive powers of the Lange vineyards. The 2010 Midnight Reserve, an eclectic blend of Cabernet, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot grapes, dazzles with its ruby red color and offers an indulgent palate of strawberry, mocha and blackberry, with an earthy undertone.

A family that has nurtured land for five generations understands the value of natural resources, and an emphasis on sustainability permeates the LangeTwins Winery at every level of its manufacture. Three decades ago, the LangeTwins family recognized the viability of an environmentally friendly model, and instituted a range of sustainable agricultural and business practices. Today, LangeTwins uses upon power at its winery and viticulture headquarters, and the family has rehabilitated former vineyards to a pristine natural state. LangeTwins also believes that responsible growers should act as stewards of the environment, and have established native animal species nesting boxes, such as owls and bats, in an effort to maintain natural harmony. LangeTwins also maximizes water conservation through Low Volume Drip Irrigation and soil moisture monitors. Lastly, LangeTwins emphasizes web-based advertising to lessen paper consumption, and uses the highest percentage content of post-consumer recycled paper as practical. In recognition of its sustainable business practices, LangeTwins is “Certified Green” through the Lodi Rules, a certification awarded only to wineries that meet strict ecological standards. “To be generational, we must be sustainable,” serves as the LangeTwins family motto. A Long Way for Hope AT A TIME WHEN CLIF MATTIX LOST EVERYTHING, HE FOUND HIS PURPOSE IN LIFE ARTICLE KRISTIN PEAKS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

he economy crash caused Mattix to lose his job, his house and car. As a result of everything falling apart, his marriage also suffered the strain and he and wife separated and eventually divorced. Desperate to begin anew, Mattix picked up the pieces and moved to Texas for work. Before the move to Fort Worth, Mattix learned his son, Joey, had been diagnosed with autism and Tourette Syndrome. Suddenly, Mattix found new resolve and a cause that helped him get his life together. He wanted to make things better for his son. “My son isn’t able to go to public school because they don’t know how to deal with his issues,” says Mattix. “He has a lot of trouble even with home school because his Tourette’s. He is a very smart and funny kid.” Mattix will ride his KLR 650 motorcycle in the Colorado Classic on June 21 to raise money for Hope Center for Autism. It’s a 1,000 mile ride through some of the most scenic passes of Colorado and challenges the participants to complete the 1,000 mile ride within 24 hours. The Hope Center for Autism’s mission is to enable children on

24 West FW Lifestyle | June 2014

the autism spectrum and their families to live more fully functional lives. Mattix is the president of the board for the Hope Center. “The goal for the ride is to raise $20,000,” he says. “With a lot of support, hopefully we can. The reason to raise so much is that insurance companies are recently denying our clients coverage for therapy. Without therapy, a lot of kids with autism will really struggle to manage a normal life.” Just recently, teachers in Texas have had their insurance coverage change. The Hope Center for Autism has a teacher in the program that says every penny of her paycheck is just enough to cover only the therapy for her son. That is without even considering rent, groceries, car payment, etc. Mattix is doing this race in hopes that he can prevent what happened to him and his family from happening to other families dealing with autism. The good news is things have turned around for Mattix. He’s returned to work and is the chief marketing officer at Ilfusion Creative, a full service marketing and branding agency, and is in a relationship. After everything he’s gone through, Mattix’s focus remains the same – helping his son.

Renters Have Much to Gain by Pursuing Home Ownership ARTICLE STEVE MASSEY

B

uying a home versus renting is a big decision that takes careful consideration, as most loan consultants will agree. But the rewards of home ownership are great. For many years, purchasing real estate has been considered an extremely profitable investment. It is an achievement that offers a sense of pride, financial stability and potential tax advantages. Yes, there are certain responsibilities associated with owning a home. Landlords will often argue the benefits of renting, and for obvious reasons. If you are renting, you’re helping them make their mortgage payment. The numbers are staggering if you look at it this way. If you are paying $1,000 per month for an apartment, and you know your rent will increase 5 percent every year, then over the next five years you will pay your landlord $66,309. If you are currently renting a house,

you may be paying much more than that each month. Either way, you gain no equity by shelling out this monthly housing expense and you certainly won’t benefit when the property value goes up. However, if you were to purchase your own home or condominium, you would be well on your way toward building potential equity within that same five-year period. By choosing a fixed-rate loan program, you can have the comfort of knowing that your monthly mortgage payment will never go up. In fact, you would have the option of refinancing to a lower interest rate at some point in the future should interest rates drop, and this would cause your monthly mortgage commitment to go down. In addition to building equity, there are tax advantages that come into play with home ownership. Depending on your tax bracket, owning a home is often less expensive than renting after taxes. Interest payments on a mortgage below $1 million are tax-deductible, and there are additional tax advantages with various loan scenarios; sharing this information with your tax consultant is very important. To find the loan program that is right for you, an imortgage loan consultant will need to evaluate your monthly household income, current assets and savings, as well as any monthly obligations you may have for credit card payments, car payments, child support, etc. These prequalification factors, along with the report of your credit score, will determine how much house you can afford and what interest rate you may pay for financing. It is also important to let your loan consultant know what your future financial goals are, because this will help narrow down which loan option is the best fit for your long-term needs and short-term goals. Housing is an expense that takes a big bite out of the monthly budget. If you are a renter and feel that “home” is more than just some place to hang your hat, think about the advantages of purchasing real estate. It may be time to take the step into building your personal net worth as a homeowner by contacting your local imortgage branch today. Budget-Friendly Travel Tips W

ith a winter that never seems to end, families are aching to enjoy some fun in the sun, turning their attention to a well-deserved getaway. According to a recent Bank of America survey, 46 percent of Americans plan on hitting the road and organizing family-friendly vacations this year. But nearly half of these survey respondents, 48 percent, said the most difficult part of planning a trip is managing a budget. FUN, AFFORDABLE VACATIONS

Travel Channel host Samantha Brown has trekked the globe and is an ace at keeping costs low while maximizing adventure. She shares a few budget saving tips for the millions of Americans looking to take a family vacation and ensure lasting memories. “When you start researching vacation destinations, it’s important to keep in mind that a good rewards card can help to offset travel costs,” Brown said. “I find that using credit cards like the BankAmericard Travel Rewards credit card gives you great flexibility in how to use your points to cover travel expenses ... more than just for flights. You can book your travel whenever, however you choose so there are no restrictions or blackouts.” Using a rewards card and following these helpful travel tricks will guarantee an unforgettable family vacation that won’t break the budget 26 West FW Lifestyle | June 2014

DESTINATION, DESTINATION, DESTINATION

The majority of survey respondents said they are headed towards easy to access, family-friendly destinations like beaches, theme parks and zoos. They also said they are careful to steer clear of popular college party destinations. Sixty three percent of respondents said car trips are the preferred mode of travel because they are easier on the budget and also ensure that the vacation will be an adventure. Road trips are also ideal because travel schedules are more flexible; you can stay an extra night in a location, or if the weather is nice, consider camping or visiting public parks which are often more affordable. And don’t forget travel journals for each family member so they track the vacation and save memories. SAVE ON LODGING, PARK ADMISSION FEES

Families are increasingly looking for ways to stretch the dollar, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that 36 percent of men and 47 percent of women agreed that costs are extremely important when planning a vacation. Half of the survey respondents agreed that hotels and lodging generally eat up most of the budget. Search for ways to save a bit of money in other places by being flexible with your dates or traveling to locations that are off the beaten path. You can also use rewards points you’ve already accumulated towards lodging or airfare expenses. Some travel rewards credit cards let you use your points to “pay yourself back” for any type of

travel purchase such as flights, hotels, vacation packages, cruises, rental cars or baggage fees through a statement credit. You can even use your points to pay for theme park tickets and camp sites. PLAN OUT YOUR ACTIVITIES

One of the best parts about a family vacation is getting the whole family involved in the travel planning process. Hold a family meeting about a month before your trip and have each member choose and plan an activity so everyone is invested in the family vacation. This will take all the responsibility off the parents’ shoulders and make travel easier. Challenge the family to plan activities that are unique to the area — those you wouldn’t be able to do in your hometown like surfing, mountain hiking or stargazing. These types of new and unique activities will create lasting memories and strengthen the bonds of family — which is what family vacations are all about. It’s also fun to choose activities that allow your children to see you acting like a kid. For example, go-cart racing, trampoline parks or eating ice cream sundaes for dinner are great ways for kids to see their parents lighten up and have a great time. HAVE A BACKUP PLAN

Whenever you travel, you’re likely to experience missed connections, wrong turns, long lines or unexpected closings. One thing you can do to prepare for the unexpected is to create a plan A and plan B for your entire trip. Start two weeks in advance

of your departure date by brainstorming with the whole family all of the possible routes, attractions, restaurants and hotels that you’d like to incorporate into your trip. Throughout the next two weeks, narrow down the list and create two plans for going to your destination and heading back home. In the event you run into any issues, you won’t have to waste time figuring out another option. Also, it’s always important to remember that your children may copy the way you react during a stressful situation. Travel is an ideal time to teach your kids coping skills and how to make the best of it. PAY WITH YOUR CARD

Most families (77 percent) pay for purchases during vacations with credit cards. This not only minimizes the amount of cash or travelers checks you should carry, but it allows you to offset costs. Since most places accept credit cards, think about using a rewards card for big ticket expenses like gas, theme park admission and hotels. If you use a rewards credit card for those purchases, it frees up cash for smaller expenses and also accumulates points that you can use on your next vacation. Look for a card like the BankAmericard Travel Rewards card where you can earn 1.5 points for every dollar spent on purchases, every time. Then these points can be used to get a statement credit to cover your flights, hotels, vacation packages, cruises, rental cars or baggage fees. For more information, visit BankOfAmerica.com/creditcard.

Parting Thoughts

That’s Surreal West WORDS JULIET GEORGE

...In short, there’s simply not A more congenial spot For happily-ever-aftering than here In Camelot. King Arthur in Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot [lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner]

A

magnificent structure materialized on the prairie west of Fort Worth proper in 1892. The British-influenced Ye Arlington Inn was designed to attract investors, prospective residents, business travelers, and local society to the new streetcar suburb of Chamberlin Arlington Heights. With banners waving atop turrets, the grand hotel stood on a park-like campus at the present-day northwest corner of Crestline and Merrick and overlooked the West Fork of the Trinity River. Trees - uprooted from the river’s bottomlands – enhanced the landscaping of its grounds. Design of the hotel, attributed to architects Arthur Albert Messer, Marshall Sanguinet, and Howard Messer, featured Tudor references. The Messer brothers had come from Reading, England, to make their mark on Fort Worth’s built environment. Denver-based brother real estate developers and brothers Humphrey Barker Chamberlin and Alfred W. Chamberlin, also British natives, had brought Henry W. Tallant to the area to supervise construction, transportation and most other aspects of the suburb’s beginning. Tallant’s parents were Britons, although Baltimore was his birthplace. Chamberlin routed his trolley tracks to angle off of then-Arlington Heights Boulevard (now West Seventh Street and Camp Bowie Boulevard) onto present-day Crestline and take riders to the hotel. From there, the route turned south toward Lake Como, where artesian water lapped at the edges of an ornate pavilion and 34 West FW Lifestyle | June 2014

reflected the sky over a park area. The trolley then followed a loop in the track and headed back toward Fort Worth’s Union Depot. Meanwhile, in the suburb of Oak Cliff west of Dallas, developer Thomas L. Marsalis had already commissioned the Park Hotel in 1889, his version of a famous San Diego inn. In 1903, Sam Rosen would open the White City Hotel (said to be inspired by the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, also called the White City for its bright-white buildings) within his Rosen Heights housing addition and its White City amusement park in North Fort Worth. Just as many hotels had sprung up near railway stops, and just as stagecoach inns had served travelers in earlier eras, suburban hotels awaited those who rode electrified streetcars out into the hinterlands. On opening night - July 9, 1892 - according to a Dallas Morning News report - “. . . the hotel, brilliantly lighted, was visited by nearly 2,000 people, who admired the rich furnishings, and beautiful surroundings of Fort Worth’s new and magnificent hostelry. Every appointment of the house is of the most elegant character. Ault’s band furnished exquisite music during the evening.” What could top that luminous bash? The comings and goings of movers and shakers, a society wedding, a reunion of fraternity men, a momentous decision in local arts patronage, and another unforgettable evening lit by roaring flames were still to come.
