Action photo taken during the event

Photo taken from a “medium” distance during the event

When photographing an event or class activity, arrive early before it begins. Always remember to show students as they prepare for the activity. Maybe it’s when they’re boarding the bus for a field trip, or perhaps it’s the study group meeting to prepare a presentation. It’s also important to show all aspects of the event while it’s taking place. A teacher may take time to explain a lesson while on the excursion. A student might direct a group to share their ideas during the event, or one student may want a closer view of the topic. After the event ends, it’s not always finished. Students board buses to go back to school after the field trip. Some may wait for parent pick ups. Others may wait outside the school, chatting about what they learned. Photographers must cover all aspects of the event before, during and after it takes place in order to show the complete story.

As you cover the event, be sure to take a variety of photos, both horizontal and vertical, to add visual interest to the final design. Take a photo to establish the place you’re visiting, for example. In addition, look for opportunities to show the wider picture. Move in closer to take several medium-range pictures, again in both horizontal and vertical formats. Proceed even closer to take images of students engaged in studying their subjects. Close-ups show readers even more about what students were learning or skills they were developing during a learning activity. As you photograph the story, remember the lighting and composition techniques that make your photos even stronger.

Exercise 5 Choose an upcoming event or activity you plan to cover in the yearbook. Before covering the event, list ideas for photos you might “see” when covering the event. Remember to list ideas for taking photos before, during and after the event. Also list ideas for horizontal and vertical photos, as well as thoughts on photos taken from a wide angle, medium distance and close proximity. See Exercise 5 for more details.
