COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES & RESEARCH

Make your mark

RIGHT NOW

you are probably bursting with questions.

What does it take to succeed in life? How can Life University’s graduate study program help me become an expert in my field? Why choose Life University over other graduate studies programs? The fact that you are currently holding this book in your hands tells me that you are on your way to answering these questions. My overarching hope is that when you finish reading it, you decide to take the next step of your journey through life, at LIFE. Beyond that, however, I hope we share an understanding that we all possess, and have always possessed, an infinite capacity to reach our optimal potential and that the next step in your journey to helping others understand that philosophy can start right here, right now. From its founding in 1974, Life University has embraced the idea that humans are spiritual beings whose lives are directed by universal laws including the innate ability to develop, heal and adapt. Today, Life University’s vitalistic vision is sustained through its programs, which set the standard for excellence in contemporary healthcare education. Our Eight Core Proficiencies offer clearly defined performance goals and measurable criteria for success. Through them, and by definition, a Life University graduate is a leader who exemplifies humanistic values. In a world where change is inevitable, our graduates leave our halls ready to meet tomorrow’s challenges and prepared to provide innovative approaches directing that world change in a way that elevates society and evolves its approach to healthcare. We encourage our students to study what they love so that, upon graduation, they will love what they do and can share their passion with their patients and clients. Life University is the one place where you can be exactly who you are while learning how to reach all you are capable of achieving. To me, one of the best things at LIFE is the environment we’ve created – an environment where top students share a deep commitment to helping others and making the world a better place. That spirit, and LIFE’s unique vitalistic philosophy, respectful of the inborn healing abilities of the body, make LIFE a caring, service-oriented and dynamic community like no other. I invite you to come visit our campus and see for yourself; LIFE truly is a one-of-a-kind experience. I look forward to meeting with you when you do. Yours in LIFE’s Journey, President Guy F. Riekeman, D.C.

24 “You Know You Go to LIFE When...”

BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER… LIFE UNIVERSITY OFFERS YOU MORE THAN JUST A DEGREE.

WE OFFER A CORE PHILOSOPHY DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU THE BEST YOU CAN BE.

WE CALL IT THE LIFE MOVEMENT

Eight Core Proficiencies: We’re not just here to train the next generation of health professionals; we’re here to train great leaders, thinkers and doers. As part of your LIFE education, you’ll take courses on character (Integrity & Citizenship, Leadership & Entrepreneurship), personal development (Belief Systems & Performance, Learning Theory & Critical Thinking), philosophy (Philosophy of Human Existence & Health Care Policy, Contemporary Scientific Paradigms), and thought leadership (Communication & Relationship Theory, Integrative Change). These “Eight Ways to Great” will become part of who you are, and will serve as touchstones to guide you as you make your way in the world – and change it for the better. The Wellness Portfolio: LIFE’s view of wellness means thinking bigger and digging deeper when it comes to defining “health.” We believe true health is multi-dimensional – six-dimensional, to be exact – encompassing an optimal balance of the Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social, Environmental and Spiritual aspects of ourselves. Together, these six dimensions of health form the foundation of our Wellness Portfolio, a way of looking at and applying ideas of total wellness which underlies all we do at LIFE – from the academic and personal resources we offer our students to the design of our campus village.

Vitalistic Philosophy: What is Vitalism? We’ll give you the short answer, as the long answer is one we hope you will spend the rest of your life discovering, rediscovering and applying to everything you are and everything you do. Vitalism is the understanding and the principle that the human body is a self-organizing, self-maintaining and self-healing organism. It’s a philosophy centered on the truth that all life possesses its own innate, guiding intelligence, and that it is this vital force – and nothing else – that gives us the power to heal, grow, adapt and live lives of optimal performance and significance. Life is Vitalism, and Vitalism is LIFE. Lasting Purpose: We are called to a higher purpose to leave the world a better place than we found it – whether that means devoting our lives to spreading our philosophy across the globe, or going the extra mile, every day, with every patient, to ensure that no one leaves our offices without feeling uplifted, understood and well cared-for. To put it simply, Lasting Purpose is our personal commitment “To Give, To Do, To Love, To Serve – out of a Sense of Abundance.” The LIFE Movement: The LIFE Movement is what happens when you combine the Eight Core Proficiencies, The Wellness Portfolio, Vitalistic Philosophy and Lasting Purpose into one life-changing, lifelong journey. It is an unstoppable flow of ideas, philosophies, values, inspirations, and ways of being and doing, funneled into an integrative worldview unlike any other; one that will empower you to create your life and to impact the lives of others in ways you have yet to imagine. So go ahead, turn the page and take your first step.

LIFE UNIVERSITY: Life at LIFE

When you take a closer look at LIFE, you’ll see we’re in a class of our own – in more ways than one. LIFE is one of the world’s most innovative vital health sciences universities, boasting eleven health-focused undergraduate degrees in fields including Biology, Positive Psychology, Exercise Science, Nutrition & Dietetics, Life & Health Coaching; our Master’s programs in Sport Health Science and Clinical Nutrition; and our world-renowned Doctor of Chiropractic program. How do we set the standard? Simple. Everything, and we mean everything, from our course curriculums to our campus footprint is built on our vitalistic philosophy and commitment to values-based education. Everything we are and everything we do is designed to empower and inspire our students (and every member of our LIFE community) to live lives of success and significance. Here, our beliefs, values and attitudes are what set us apart – and bring us together. When our healthcare-minded students graduate, they don’t just set out to join their industry, they aim to transform it (we call it “Leading the Vital Health Revolution”). That’s because our students graduate with a holistic, vitalistic view of true wellness – not just “health” – that encompasses a balance of the physical, intellectual, emotional, environmental, social and spiritual aspects of ourselves; as well as the certain knowledge that our bodies are self-developing, self-maintaining and self-healing. It’s an empowering philosophy, the kind you can’t wait to share with your clients, coworkers and colleagues.

Left: LIFE’s Bell Tower, which houses the names of the first DC’s who were passionate about their profession and beliefs, is a fitting place to snap your picture on graduation day. They were the pioneers of the vitalistic philosophy which continues to thrive at LIFE through our Lasting Purpose: “To Give, To Do, To Love, To Serve – out of a Sense of Abundance.”

Spend just five minutes on campus and you’ll see that here, community rules. Life University’s small class sizes and focus on active learning, combined with our private campus setting and values-based educational philosophy, mean we function more like a close-knit neighborhood than a typical educational institution. That’s why we’ve taken to calling our 104-acre home-away-from-home our LIFE “village.” This is a place where everyone smiles and nods hello when they pass each other in the halls or walking across campus. It’s a place where professors, staff and students share tables and conversations in the café; where the administration sits down town-hall-style each month to listen and answer at “Let’s Talk;” and where people bring their spouses and their children just to play on the weekends. Some of us love the village so much, we move in! Many single students, as well as those with families, choose to live in our family-friendly on-campus housing which just happens to be right next to our innovative, whole-child education center, Bright LIFE. It’s just one of our bright ideas designed to make LIFE not only a place you’ll love to study, but a place you’ll love to live. Beyond thinking bigger at LIFE, we are always thinking for the better. There’s an energy on our campus that’s palpable, and it continually propels us forward. From pioneering a new vision for healthcare to caring for the health of our planet, we’re always looking for ways to do things smarter, healthier, kinder, greener.

A combination of a high-tech outdoor amphitheater, water features and green spaces infused with our philosophy and history. Our Wellness Center, On-Campus Clinics, Nutrition Kitchens and Sport Science Institute? Leading-edge in design and leading the way in practice: founded on vitalistic principles and the belief that healthcare is about taking care of the whole person, so they can take care of themselves – from the inside out. We believe in that “inside-out” approach to, well, just about everything. We understand that in order to be truly successful and fulfilled on the outside (with your career, your professional and personal achievements – even your social and family life) all of that has to match up with who you really are on the inside. Think of it this way: If you don’t know who you truly are, how can you know who and what you want to become? That’s why we encourage our graduate students to study what they love so they can become experts in fields for which they have a true passion and have careers in fields that will offer them a lifetime of rewarding challenges. At LIFE, we strive to inspire each student to engage in their own quest for self-discovery (find out who they truly are), to fulfill their innate potential (recognize who and what they can become), and to stay true to their own guiding principles as they become citizens and leaders in their communities. One thing is for sure: you can be confident that when you leave here, it will be the real YOU walking across that graduation stage and into a career perfectly matched for who you are and what you believe in.

Sport Health Science Master’s candidates at Life University learn from professors who have worked in the field with world-class athletes and as clinical exercise physiologists in hospital-based cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs. Master’s candidates are immersed in a “living laboratory” at the LIFE Sports Science Institute where they work directly with athletes, under faculty supervision, providing services ranging from pre-event conditioning to injury management and rehabilitation. There, they explore the areas of exercise physiology, biomechanics and sports chiropractic through hands-on care of clients.

A growing understanding of the health impact of sound nutrition, along with concerns about an aging population, food safety, and a rise in nutrition-related disorders, is fueling a demand for nutrition experts. Life University’s graduate program in clinical nutrition prepares highly qualified individuals to meet the challenges of the future. Nutrition professionals with a Master’s degree are most often considered by employers for sought after specialized positions in fields such as pediatrics, critical care, and geriatrics or for management roles in clinics and corporations far above candidates possessing a Bachelors degree only. Registered dietitians who have earned a graduate degree in the field are especially valued team members due to their extensive knowledge, understanding of specialized patient needs, and extensive field experience.
