COLLEGE OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

Make your mark

RIGHT NOW

you are probably bursting with questions. What does it take to become successful? How is LIFE University different? Where do I go from here? Will I succeed? The answers to these questions could alter the course of your career your life, even the way you think and feel about who you are and the world you want to inhabit. In fact, that is exactly what I hope these questions will do for you – I hope they will change you. I hope they will help you begin to recreate your whole life and your whole self for the better. At Life University, change is at the core of all we are and all we do. We exist to change the way students see their education (it’s more than taking tests and getting grades – here it’s about learning and discovering values, character and philosophies that will serve you long after you’ve framed your degree); to change the way graduates see their careers and their lives (our students gain more than knowledge and job skills; they cultivate a passion and a Lasting Purpose); and, in turn, to change the way the world sees things like healthcare, human performance, business, and our relationship to each other and to our planet. We know it’s a tall order. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed, underprepared, and even a bit scared when faced with such immense possibilities. But we also know the incredible sense of power and purpose that comes when you realize, unquestionably, what you were born to do and to be. You may not be there, yet. But the fact that you are currently holding this book in your hands tells me that you are on your way. Of course, I hope that when you finish reading it, you will know that you are on your way to LIFE. Beyond that, however, I hope you come away from these pages feeling more certain of who you are and what you want to become – whether or not that involves an undergraduate degree from Life University. Vitalism tells us that the best we can ever be, is what we truly are; that we already and always have an infinite capacity to reach our optimal potential; and that the journey can start right here, right now. So what are you waiting for? Sincerely, President Guy F. Riekeman, D.C.

Eight Core Proficiencies: We’re not just here to graduate students; we’re here to graduate great leaders, thinkers and doers. As part of your LIFE education, you’ll take courses on character (Integrity & Citizenship, Leadership & Entrepreneurship), personal development (Belief Systems & Performance, Learning Theory & Critical Thinking), philosophy (Philosophy of Human Existence & Health Care Policy, Contemporary Scientific Paradigms), and thought leadership (Communication & Relationship Theory, Integrative Change). These “Eight Ways to Great” will become part of who you are, and will serve as touchstones to guide you as you make your way in the world – one success at a time.

OFFERS YOU MORE THAN JUST A college education.

WE OFFER A CORE

The Wellness Portfolio: Having a vitalistic view of wellness means thinking bigger and digging deeper when it comes to defining “health.” We believe true health is multi-dimensional – six-dimensional, to be exact – encompassing an optimal balance of the Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social, Environmental and Spiritual aspects of ourselves. Together, these six dimensions of health form the foundation of our Wellness Portfolio, a way of looking at and applying ideas of total, vitalistic wellness which underlies all we do at LIFE - from the academic and personal resources we offer our students to the design of our very own campus village.

PHILOSOPHY DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU THE BEST YOU CAN BE.

WE CALL IT THE LIFE MOVEMENT

Vitalistic Philosophy: What is vitalism? We’ll give you the short answer, as the long answer is one we hope you will spend the rest of your life discovering, rediscovering and applying to everything you are and everything you do. Vitalism is the understanding and the principle that the human body is a self-organizing, self-maintaining and self-healing organism. It’s a philosophy centered on the truth that all life possesses its own innate, guiding intelligence, and that it is this vital force – and nothing else – that gives us the power to heal, grow, adapt and live lives of optimal performance and significance. Life is Vitalism, and Vitalism is LIFE. Lasting Purpose: Our students are committed to leaving the world a better place than they found it – whether that means starting a global nonprofit; encouraging your office to recycle; or choosing to work for a company with higher values, even if it means a lower paycheck. Whatever it may look like to you, Lasting Purpose represents your personal commitment “To Give, To Do, To Love, To Serve – out of a sense of abundance.” The LIFE Movement: The LIFE Movement is what happens when you combine the Eight Core Proficiencies, The Wellness Portfolio, Vitalistic Philosophy and Lasting Purpose into one life-changing, lifelong journey. It is an unstoppable flow of ideas, philosophies, values, inspirations, and ways of being and doing, funneled into an integrative worldview unlike any other; one that will empower you to create your life and to impact the lives of others in ways you have yet to imagine. So go ahead, turn the page, and take your first step.

“I used to think that a biology degree was essentially the same everywhere. But at LIFE, the philosophical foundation provides a more modern and practical application to the science.”

4

“I enrolled at LIFE as a psychology major, but the more I worked with people and learned about how our emotional health is so intrinsically tied to our physical well-being, the more I realized biopsychology was my true passion. Making the switch was easy!”

“I chose to get my exercise science degree from LIFE because I don’t just want to help athletes heal faster, I want to help them heal better, play better, and be better.”

meaning

Any college can give you a degree. These days, you can even earn one without ever leaving home, or changing out of your pajamas (we don’t recommend that last one). But at Life University you get so much more than a diploma, or even the education behind it – you get a true LIFE experience. College is about so much more than a piece of paper or a beefed up resume. It’s about taking steps to grow and evolve. Perhaps for you it will mean being away from home for the first time; or maybe you’ve been at this “life” thing for a while now and are realizing it’s time to do right by yourself, your family and your future and earn the degree you’ve always dreamed of. College is about discovering who you are, what your purpose is, and how you will make a difference in the world. There’s nothing like finding that point in your life where something clicks, and that transformation – from “What do I do?” to “What I CAN do” – takes place. That transformation happens for our students every day. Our small class sizes, interactive learning approach, core philosophies and focus on whole-personal development make earning your degree meaningful. Our campus culture, the LIFE community (there’s a reason we call it the LIFE ‘village’) and our commitment to creating exceptional student experiences combine to create an environment where you can’t help but dream big and bigger, and strive for success and significance in all you do. We live in a time of constant change. While so many are trying to keep up, our graduates are already creating and contributing to what comes next. Why follow the pack when you could be leading the charge? If you look at the difference-makers of the world, you’ll notice that many discovered their potential in a place and time that provided them an opportunity to realize their purpose, construct a vision and transform their lives toward significance and fulfillment. Life University is that type of place, and this is your time.

“Being a nutrition major is about more than loving food, it’s about helping people live fuller, healthier lives.”

“I’m an outgoing, interactive person, so I would always come early, stay late and go by the offices of my teachers frequently, always pushing them above and beyond so that I got the most out of my computer information management degree. They always had an open door and willingness to help.”

What is your purpose? Discover it at LIFE.

ways to great They may sound like lofty goals, but here, they’re a way of LIFE.

Dream the impossible. live the dream.

GET INTO IT. GET ON WITH IT. When you take a closer look at LIFE, you’ll see we’re in a class of our own – in more ways than one. LIFE is more than the home of the world’s largest chiropractic program, it’s the home of one of the world’s most innovative vital health sciences universities, with eleven specialized undergraduate degrees in leading fields such as Biology, Psychology, Exercise Science, Nutrition & Dietetics, Life & Health Coaching, Computer Information Management, Business and more. Looking to go beyond the bachelor’s degree? We also offer Master’s programs in Exercise Science and Clinical Nutrition. How do we do it? Simple. Everything – and we mean everything, from our course curriculums to our campus footprint – is built on our vitalistic philosophy and commitment to values-based education. Everything we are and everything we do is designed to empower and inspire our students, and every member of our LIFE community, to create lives of success and significance. Here, our beliefs, values and attitudes are what set us apart – and bring us together. If this sounds like home to you, keep reading…

Take a closer look at our individual undergraduate programs on pages 16-17.

Take responsibility. change your world.

GET REAL ABOUT IT. GET ready.

These are not your typical undergraduate programs, because you are not a typical undergraduate student. We know you don’t want to spend hours and hours in lectures, taking notes, taking tests and then pressing “repeat.” That’s why we’ve designed comprehensive, cutting-edge programs that get you into the material AND out in the field.

Ride on! Life University has over three miles of bikeable trails and walking paths – that means fewer carbon emissions and more fresh air for everyone.

Unlike most universities, we don’t do huge lecture halls filled with hundreds of students and one TA. Small classes are always taught by an expert faculty member who gets to know you as a student and as an individual, so they can help you make the most of your time here. You’ll also partner with other students; take on internships, externships and individual research projects; try your hand at hands-on labs; and work together with departments and organizations from within and outside the University to expand your knowledge and skills across disciplines. Being just minutes from bustling Atlanta, Georgia means opportunities to study, intern, work and volunteer with everything from other top universities, to Fortune 500 companies, to global nonprofits are only a few exits away. It also means you can spend your school days nestled among more than 100 acres of rolling hills and forest (complete with a creek, waterfall and charming historical gristmill); then zip into the beating heart of the Southern Capital’s metropolitan playground to experience a whole city’s worth of vibrant culture, art and entertainment… (After you’ve finished studying, of course.)

You’re definitely in for a change – but isn’t that just exactly what you’ve been looking for? LIFE is waiting. Are you ready?

go to the rainbow, find the gold

Take on a leadership position in a club or organization and hone your take-charge skills while making friends, having fun and giving back.

As a student at LIFE, you’ll be the architect of your own education; laying the foundation for your future success. In doing so, you’ll become an example – a leader – to your classmates and colleagues. You’ll also become part of a vital campus culture that encourages you to take charge and affect change at every turn – be it in the classroom, as a member of one or more of LIFE’s 60-plus student organizations, on the athletic field, or even by starting your very own side business to feed your textbook fund. Yep, our students do all this and more WHILE earning their college degrees. Pretty impressive, huh? As you can see, a LIFE educational experience is all about balance. Getting your hands dirty with the Seeds of LIFE Gardening Club; penning a column for the Vital Source student newspaper; taking field trips with an international student organization; leading the field with our top-ranked Division I and Super League teams; DJ-ing at on-campus events; hosting short play contests in our Standard Process Amphitheatre – a diverse range of extracurricular opportunities allows you to stretch your wings beyond the classroom, feed your confidence, broaden your self-knowledge and, ultimately, take flight. We don’t call ourselves the Running Eagles for nothing!

Every academic quarter, Club & Market Day gives students a chance to talk to on-campus clubs and organizations about getting involved, while local vendors show off their studentcentered products and services.

When our healthcare-minded students graduate, they don’t just set out to join their industry, they aim to transform it (we call it “Leading the Vital Health Revolution”). That’s because our students graduate with a holistic, vitalistic view of true wellness – not just “health” – that encompasses a balance of the physical, intellectual, emotional, environmental, social and spiritual aspects of ourselves; as well as the certain knowledge that our bodies are self-developing, self-maintaining and self-healing. It’s an empowering philosophy, the kind you can’t wait to share with your clients, coworkers and colleagues.

Be a Change Agent.

Our non-health sciences students find this philosophy pretty empowering too, especially when they see it action all over campus. Regardless of your area of study, it’s easy to pursue a healthy, active lifestyle here. From the schedule of free, student-led fitness classes in our Wellness Center, to our sustainable café, to our life coaching and nutrition counseling services for all students, we take care of you, so you can focus on taking care of your future.

LIFE’s students come from all walks of life and from all over the world. No matter who you are or where you’re from, you’ll feel right at home.

Spend just five minutes on campus and you’ll see that here, community rules. Life University’s small class sizes and focus on active learning, combined with our private campus setting and values-based educational philosophy mean we function more like a close-knit neighborhood than a typical educational institution. That’s why we’ve taken to calling our 104-acre homeaway-from-home our LIFE “village.”

This is a place where everyone smiles and nods hello when they pass each other in the halls or walking across campus. It’s a place where professors, staff and students share tables and conversations in the café; where the administration sits down town-hall-style each month to listen and answer at “Let’s Talk;” where people bring their spouses and their children just to play on the weekends. Some of us love the village so much, we move in! Many single students as well as those bringing their families along for the journey choose to live in our family-friendly on-campus housing, which just happens to be right next to our innovative, whole-child education center, BrightLIFE. It’s just one of our bright ideas designed to make LIFE not only a place you’ll love to study, but a place you’ll love to stay.* *Want to see what else we’ve done with the place? YOUR EARTH

We believe in an “inside-out” approach to, well, just about everything. We understand that in order to be truly successful and fulfilled on the outside (with your career, your professional and personal achievements, even your social and family life) all of that has to match up with who you really are on the inside. Think of it this way: If you don’t know who you truly are, how can you know who and what you want to become? These are not easy questions, but we know a place where you can start to find the answers. At LIFE, we strive to inspire each student to engage in their own quest for self-discovery (who you truly are), to fulfill their innate potential (who and what you can become), and to stay true to their own guiding principles as they become citizens and leaders in their communities. You can be confident that when you leave here, it will be the real YOU walking across that graduation stage and into a career and a life you know is right for you.

What really sets Life University apart is our philosophy. The LIFE experience is founded on the LIFE Movement; a portfolio of four key principles and philosophies that drive everything we do at LIFE.

Socrates Café, our sustainable dining facility, features organic, locally sourced and vegetarian/ vegan-friendly meals, all-compostable dinnerware, (made from corn!), renewable bamboo flooring and plenty of natural sunlight.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

COMPUTER INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

LIFE’s business majors first gain a solid foundation in the overarching principles of management and socially responsible business philosophy, then specialize in one area with additional coursework and potential internships, independent study and special projects. In terms of attracting faculty with impressive business experience, landing an internship with a top company, finding meaningful part-time work, and searching for that first job, Atlanta offers significant benefits. The city ranks No. 4 in the nation for Fortune 500 company headquarters and No.1 for minority-run firms. 18

YOU WANT TO:

YOU WANT TO:

Create and oversee technology infrastructure and work as part of an organizational team in business or healthcare or as an entrepreneur to find the best ways to implement and advance beneficial tech tools.

Help people set and meet their health goals, overcome health-related obstacles and create solid support systems.

Use your knowledge of and passion for human, animal and/or plant life to improve our understanding of, respect for and treatment of living systems.

YOU WANT TO:

Harness the power of corporate social responsibility and entrepreneurship to manage successful economic, social and environmental relationships for long-term business success.

HEALTH COACHING

Studying information technology at Life University means studying how information is managed and used to meet the needs and advance the strategic direction of an organization. Our students complete 60 credit hours in computer science and 50 in management – creating well-rounded graduates who not only understand IT applications, but can also interact intelligently with their peers in marketing and accounting, and become corporate leaders in their own rights.

Unlike health educators who typically provide information for patients to use on their own, health coaching uses a more interactive consultation model with the coach and patient working together. A health coach walks the road with patients, helping them actually apply information to their unique situation. They help patients gain a deeper understanding of their conditions and master the skills needed to persist and succeed with a prescribed health care regimen. Coaches can also help people interact most effectively with a multidisciplinary team of clinical specialists, identify providers with appropriate expertise, communicate with clinicians, and advocate on the patient’s behalf.

YOU WANT TO:

Help people set and meet their health goals, overcome health-related obstacles and create solid support systems. Biologists work diversely in fields as varied and numerous as the plants and animals they study, pursuing opportunities and careers in lab and field research, education, healthcare, journalism, entrepreneurship and many other exciting industries. Because LIFE’s curriculum is grounded in a philosophy that is deeply respectful of the innate intelligence of life, you’ll not only develop a solid knowledge-base in biology’s foundations, you’ll cultivate a sense of respect for all life and our human role in understanding and interacting with it.

LIFE’s exercise science students receive the highest-quality education and technical instruction in the disciplines of anatomy, biology, biochemistry, physiology and kinesiology, and apply this knowledge to a range of populations. They also learn to work with the body as an innately intelligent organism, and to care for athletes and community members through the Life University Sport Science Institute (LSSI), our state-of-theart public clinic, and in a variety of Internship/ externship or practicum settings, including cardiac rehabilitation and adult fitness programs offered by hospitals, corporations and community organizations.

YOU WANT TO:

YOU WANT TO:

YOU WANT TO:

Help people and organizations better understand how diet impacts personal and societal health, empowering them to follow nutritious eating plans.

Guide others to explore, expand and realize their potential and strengthen their mental/emotional coping abilities using a positive psychological approach.

Customize a degree to your unique interests and needs, synthesize previous college credits with your current studies and prepare for professional success in a variety of fields and roles.

Nutritionists create healthy menus and educate clients and communities on the nutritional effect of food on health and well-being in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, health clubs, pharmaceutical companies, physician’s offices, nursing homes, correctional facilities, private practice and many outpatient settings – such as food manufacturing and food service companies. The Nutrition Department boasts a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen where students receive hands-on training and group learning. Nutrition students also enjoy classes in the new live demonstration culinary amphitheater, where instructors model concepts taught in class.

YOU WANT TO:

Translate the science of nutrition into real-world solutions to improve the health of your community on a clinical level.

Our dietetics majors study in a highly competitive program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, with students and faculty who share their passion. Graduates can apply to LIFE’s competitive dietetic internship program and, upon completion, take the Registration Dietitian Exam. R.D.’s may work as clinical health professionals in hospitals, nursing care facilities, correctional facilities and outpatient settings. For those wishing to further their study, LIFE offers a Masters Program in Clinical Nutrition.

Our groundbreaking program focuses on positive psychology by introducing students to the study of mental and behavioral processes from a truly holistic perspective, while adhering to guidelines set by the American Psychological Association (APA). In addition to incorporating LIFE’s vitalistic philosophy, our psychology majors are taught to emphasize our inborn human capacities for love, courage, forgiveness, wisdom and interpersonal connection. Along with scientific study, these philosophies are woven throughout all coursework, and culminate in real-life applications through either an internship or senior thesis experience.

YOU WANT TO:

Explore the complex interdependencies between “mind” and “body” and use your knowledge to improve individual and group function.

Interdisciplinary coursework will explore and challenge our collective knowledge of fundamental biopsychological concepts regarding bases of behavior, emotion, cognition and their relation to health. Future professions for graduates frequently involve applying this knowledge of physiology and psychology to issues of drug use and abuse, motivation, sleep patterns and more. Students are also prepared to take on graduate work in fields such as Chiropractic, medicine, nursing, dentistry, psychology or neuroscience.

A general studies degree equips students with the communication expertise, critical thinking abilities and worldview that translate into transferable skills valued by all employers. Our interdisciplinary approach draws content from across the University, with coursework in business, health care, computer information management, psychology, nutrition and dietetics, and exercise science. You’ll receive a broad education in the humanities, social sciences, natural science and math, and then select three major areas of study to explore in greater depth.

HOW CAN I AFFORD THIS? That answer is simple: Financial Aid. In 2011 and 2012, U.S. News & World Report ranked Life University among the top ten least expensive private schools in the country. But financial assistance is still available through loans via the federal government to help cover the cost of tuition, books and fees. Since college is a full-time job itself, you can also take out loans to cover other expenses. This way you can focus on your studies and make the most out of your time on LIFE’s campus. All the financial aid “paperwork” is done online. Our Financial Aid staff will help you complete your forms

That answer is simple too: It only takes three steps to get the ball rolling. After that, LIFE’s Admissions Department, PASS Advising Team, Financial Aid Department and Student Services Division will be on your side to help guide and advise you as you take your first steps toward your new career. We want you to love it here at LIFE and we’re determined to make your transition into college life as smooth as possible.

accurately, and choose the loan options that are best for you. Check out the diagram on the opposite page to help you see when and how you will apply for your loans. NEW STUDENT PARTY FIRST FRIDAY NIGHT

27

You know you go to Life when... ...You know First Tuesday means free T-shirts! And you collect them all. Every quarter as part of our back-to-class celebration, LIFE prints an exclusive T-shirt designed by one of our own students – and hands them out for free!

...You have memorized the World Health Organization’s definition of health. “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

...You eat at the “Soc,” study in a tree house and jog through a 19th Century Village. You might just have to experience these for yourself.

...You mark time in terms of Week 1, Week 2... rather than actual dates. Since we operate on quarters, terms are easily and uniformly organized.

...You’ve experienced Dr. Riekeman’s famous “Getting to Well Class” – and passed with flying colors. ...You’ve happily masqueraded as a superhero or pirate at more than one new student party. Student Ambassadors host a costumed theme party every quarter for all students.

...Your car bears a numbered LF (Life University)

license plate, not to mention that must-have parking sticker. ...Massive light-up teddy bears, trees and ice skaters become a part of your daily life from November to January. LIFE is host to Lights of LIFE, a campuswide holiday lights display.

...Your eco-friendly lunch box full of health food is bigger than your book bag. ...All your driving directions include “the Big Chicken.” This local landmark is famous throughout metro Atlanta. You have to see it for yourself.

...You know, and love, the “Gorilla Foot” look. ...You never miss an issue of Vital Source. LIFE’s student-run newspaper

...You eat corn, with corn. All utensils in Socrates Café are 100% compostable cornware!

...You stand in line at the hydration station between classes to refill your reusable water bottle.
