IN THE BEGINNING
In the beginning, God created everything for His glory. He made people in His image. When sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, God revealed His plan to bring people back to Himself through a descendant—His own Son. God’s plan to save people through Jesus began to take shape when God chose to bless Abraham’s family by grace. He made a covenant with Abraham and promised him a new home and a large family. God also promised Abraham that one day all the people of the world would be blessed through his family—a promise that points to Jesus. God’s promises for Abraham and Isaac were promises for Jacob too. Jacob’s family would grow to be a whole nation as part of God’s plan to bring Jesus, the Savior of the world.

OUT OF EGYPT
God used Joseph to provide for the Israelites, setting the stage for a glorious demonstration of God’s power to deliver. God raised up Moses to rescue His people from bondage in Egypt. He saved them from physical captivity like He would one day save His people from spiritual captivity by sending Jesus, a Deliverer greater than Moses. As the people of Israel traveled toward the promised land, God made a covenant with them and instructed them how to live holy lives in an unholy world. God also gave them rules for worship. God’s law sustained their relationship with God until His perfect plan was revealed through Jesus Christ.

THE FAMILY LI ADAM & EVE
SHEM
The first man, Adam, and the first woman, Eve, lived in the garden of Eden and enjoyed God’s friendship. Adam and Eve’s disobedience brought sin into the world. But God did not leave Adam and Eve without hope. He promised that one of Eve’s descendants would strike the head of the serpent. (Gen. 3:15)
ARPHAXAD
NOAH Noah followed God and had faith. So when God warned Noah about a flood and told Noah to build an ark, Noah obeyed God. God did not rescue Noah because he deserved to be rescued; Noah deserved punishment like everyone else, but God showed mercy to Noah and his family.

BOAZ & RUTH During the time of the judges, Naomi and her husband moved to Moab. There, Naomi lost everything—her husband and her two sons. Naomi headed back to Bethlehem. Ruth, Naomi’s Moabite daughterin-law, begged to go with her. God provided for the two widows through Boaz, a kinsman-redeemer. Boaz and Ruth became the parents of Obed, the grandfather of King David.

God reaffirmed His promise to Abraham’s son Isaac. God gave Isaac and Rebekah twins, but the twins fought in the womb. God told Rebekah that she was carrying two nations. The boys, Esau and Jacob, did fight, but God kept His promise to bless Isaac’s family.

God called Abram to leave his father’s house and go to a land God would show him. Abram went. (Heb. 11:8-9) God chose to bless Abram and all the world through him. God made a covenant with Abram and changed his name to Abraham. (See Gen. 12; 15; 17.) Abraham believed God’s promise. At first Sarah laughed because she was 90 years old, but she also believed God. (Heb. 11:8-12) They named their son Isaac. God was with Abraham, and He called Abraham a friend. (Jas. 2:23)

JACOB Jacob dressed in his brother’s clothes to get a blessing meant for his brother Esau. God still blessed Jacob and gave him 12 sons. Later, God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, the name of God’s covenant people.

SALMON & RAHAB Rahab asked the Israelite spies to spare her family when God gave them the city of Jericho. God saved Rahab and her family. Rahab married Salmon and gave birth to Boaz.
