CELEBRATING
Annual Report 2023
25 Years of Fearless Advocacy

A Note From Susan Friends,

I am very pleased to present our 2023 Annual Report.

Last year we celebrated 25 years of fearless advocacy for youth and young adults in our community. During that time, we have impacted more than 100,000 lives together. This is an astonishing legacy, particularly given that every single accomplishment—large or small—had so many odds stacked against it. The only reason we have served and succeeded is the compassion and tenacious commitment of leaders like you and our extraordinary clients and staff, and I want to express my deepest gratitude.

As I prepare to step down from my role as CEO in July 2024, I find myself reflecting on our journey together and also on the road ahead. Our key service areas —Housing, Counseling, Education and Workforce Development—have never been of such critical need. More than 700 youth are on the waiting list for housing. The majority of those young people are experiencing unsheltered homelessness. Youth mental health is a public health crisis. Youth aging out of foster care struggle to complete educational goals and get a strong foothold in the workforce.

and the Excellence and Advancement Foundation, is one example.

As LifeWorks moves to our next chapter, we will remain committed to walking side by side with youth in their journeys to lives they will love. The Works III will break ground this year, bringing 120 units of supportive housing online by 2026. We will focus on collaborating with our community partners and systems on developing “upstream” solutions that prevent youth from entering into systems where they do not thrive. The Travis County Transformation Project, launched in partnership with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, the Amala Foundation,

Finally, we will redouble our efforts to ensure that the expertise and experience of youth drive our work. Impactful Voices was launched in 2022 as a program to employ current and former LifeWorks clients across the organization so that their voices are embedded in service and leadership.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your friendship, guidance, and unwavering support. It has been an honor and privilege to serve alongside you.

Making an Impact for Today & Tomorrow

Meet Brittney,

a former LifeWorks client currently living a life she loves. Brittney’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of support in overcoming life’s unexpected challenges.

Navigating employment layoffs caused by the pandemic, while also caring for her husband after he was injured in an accident became a major mental and emotional burden for Brittney. This period brought to light the impact of caregiving and unemployment on mental health for Brittney, underscoring the need for more attention and support in such situations: “My husband and I reflect that if we didn’t have LifeWorks, we would have become homeless.”

Fortunately, Brittney and her husband were connected to housing services at LifeWorks, so they knew about LifeWorks counseling services. This easy access to mental health support allowed Brittney a chance to heal. That chance to heal turned into an opportunity to grow her career.

“I love that LifeWorks is breaking stereotypes. People think that being poor means you’re just not trying hard enough, but it’s just not that simple.”

“The counseling services that I received here at LifeWorks really kept me going that year. It made me realize that it’s okay to have feelings that I’m stressed and overwhelmed.”

After experiencing the positive impact of counseling first-hand, Brittney discovered a new interest and passion for helping others. She went on to earn her master’s degree in human resources from the University of HoustonClear Lake and is now working for Austin Community College. Her story is an inspiring example of how, with the right support and opportunity, LifeWorks youth can overcome adversity and pursue a life they love.
