MESSAGE FROM THE TOURISM SECRETARY
HON. RAMON R. JIMENEZ, JR.
Since the launching of “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” campaign, it has become an instant hit and it has succeeded in promoting the country as a premier destination. In a very real sense, it’s a people power campaign because you can’t imagine how spontaneous this has all been. There’s this latent love of country that we have been able to unleash. Thus, we have made the tourism campaign a shared responsibility and a “people’s business.” It is on this note that I take off my hat to the organizers and prime movers of the 2015 Standard Insurance Subic-Boracay Regatta and the Boracay Cup for doing their fair share in promoting another focused area to entice visitors: nautical tourism. With its vast coastline, there is no doubt that Philippines is the most beautiful country in the world or to safely claim that ours is one of the top 10 most beautiful countries in the world. The Philippines, being an archipelago of 7,107 beautiful islands, is naturally a premier sailing destination. Both Subic and Boracay are among the crown jewels for sailing and other similar water-based recreational and sports activities. Undoubtedly, the twin sailing events help bring in more sailing enthusiasts and foreigners to visit the Philippines and experience its many wonders including the warmth and hospitality of the Filipino people. I welcome all the participants and for choosing the Philippines as one of the world’s top nautical and sailing destinations. INTERNATIONAL
That sailing is more fun in the Philippines, you bet! Mabuhay!

Aklan has always been known for its pristine beauty and an amazing province in the Philippines that has sealed its niche in the word tourist map. It also prides itself for the distinction of being the oldest province in the Philippines. Home to Boracay Island, one of the world’s best beaches, the fun and excitement that characterize the Boracay experience always keep tourist haunted by its allure and bewitched by its magic with the resolve to return and revisit. We are also happy that two major airports, in Caticlan and Kalibo, offer frequent air travels to the province and afford tourists easier access to Boracay. For one, the Caticlan airport has made it easier, closer and more convenient to reach Boracay Island. It is for this reason why the Provincial Government of Aklan is grateful to the organizers of the Subic to Boracay Race and the Boracay Regatta, both annually anticipated events that support our overall tourism program. Now on its sixth year, we thank the Organizers for institutionalizing the twin races and for making our province not only your favorite place for fun but equally an important destination of the Asian Yachting Grand Prix Circuit. With warm heart and gratitude, I welcome all the participants and guests to this year’s Subic to Boracay Race and Boracay Cup Regatta 2015 Cup.
4
Allow me to welcome all guests and participants to the 2015 edition of the Subic to Boracay Race and the Boracay Regatta. Now on its fifth year, the prestigious international twin yachting races has added flavor and color to Aklan’s tourism and promotions program as a must-see province bannered by Boracay, which remains as one of the top five tourist destinations in the world. Our great province of Aklan is not only known for its captivating Boracay Island. It is also the home of the Ati-atihan Festival where one experiences the joy of rhythmic dancing by performers who darken themselves with soot and don colorful tribal finery. Aklan is also the biggest producer of Piña Cloth, “The Queen of Philippine Fabrics” where international trendsetters like Calvin Klein, Josie Natori, Donna Karan, and Valentino have used pineapple fabric in their various array of designs. It is for this reason why we are grateful to the regatta organizers, the Saturday Afternnon Gentlemen’s Sailing (SAGS) Club, for staging anew the Subic Bay–Boracay Race and Boracay Regatta that pride themselves as important races in the prestigious Asian Yachting Grand Prix Circuit. We are not only grateful for this gesture and effort to bring sailing events every year and we also share the collective dream of the organizers to make the Philippines an important sailing Mecca in the Asia Pacific region.

It is with deep gratitude to express our thanks to the organizers for making the Philippine Sailing Association (PSA) as part of these twin events. As part of the PSA mandate, it is involved in several training and racing programs to promote the sport in the Philippines and likewise to represent the Philippines abroad. The PSA represents the interests of the sport at the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission level. It organizes the SEA Games team. It organizes the Sailing portion of the games such as the Subic to Boracay Race and Boracay Cup Regatta 2015 when they are held in the Philippines. In behalf of the PSA officials, accept my warm felicitations and congratulations to the main organizers, sponsors and all the participants to this year’s most important international sailing event in the Philippines. Following the successful inaugural Inter-Club FF15 Challenge that made its debut in the 2014 Commodore’s Cup Regatta on April 19-26, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHYC) foisted another challenge against the SAGS (Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailing) that was readily accepted and was scheduled last October 3-5, 2014 because of the long holiday weekend in Hong Kong. The friendly three day team and individual competition featured triangle course races in the sailing haven of Philippines, Subic Bay. Competitors from the RHYC Team from Hong Kong were Tom Sheppard, Howard Williams, Lucy Sutro, Joe Nelson and Brian Henderson. The SAGS Team from Philippines were assembled by Ricky Sandoval, Jun Avecilla and Martin Tanco, Marcus Avecilla, and national sailors from the Philippine Sailing Association. To date, SAGS now has six Flying Fifteen Sailboats, five of which were donated by the RHYC Association to the club, the other by a SAGS member Kevin Wheeler. Their efforts and initiatives have opened doors for more opportunities in spreading the spark for sailing. One of the notable advocacies of SAGS aside from organizing and helping in the staging of local and major sailing events in Subic is the promotion of sailing through education and sail training through its outreach IYFRSAGS School. Throughout the years, their vision of a youth sailing programme which aims to teach young people to sail in the hopes of fostering new crew in the racing scene continues to gain momentum.

ith the maturing of yacht racing in Subic Bay comes greater interest by sponsors who are looking to participate in the widening interest in this sport. The presence of international yachtsmen and boats greatly enhances the appeal to larger national sponsors and in particular businesses with an interest in developing international awareness of their services and products. Resorts World Manila pushed the boat out, so to speak, by hosting a lavish luncheon for the Press, sponsors and dignitaries at Passion Chinese Restaurant, located at Maxims, at the recent Press Launch of this years’ Standard Insurance 6th Subic to Boracay Race and Boracay Cup Regatta 2015. The major sponsors attended as did the cream of Manila’s Press. They were entertained with videos and talks about sailing and about the upcoming races. After the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the organisers, the principle sponsors and government agencies, the floor was opened for questions to the panel about the racing and who were the favourites for the prizes. “Over the years, we work tirelessly with our sailing partners toward opening more doors for occasions in spreading the spark of sailing and enliven big boat racing pursuits in the Philippines,”

so said the SAGS Co-Chairman and The Lighthouse Marina Resort President, Jun Avecilla. Yacht racing is recognised as a gentlemanly sport, rich in tradition, passion and strong sense of community. The rousing success of acclaimed past racing events in the Philippines has brought the country and its sailing community great pride. One of the best race management teams in Asia will be led by
renowned International Race Officer Jerry Rollin for both events, ensuring a high standard and world class race conduct. Starting the race in Subic Bay provides the advantages of safe marina facilities and the wide expanse of Subic Bay for the start and this is more than matched by the windy conditions in Boracay that makes for an exceptional racing experience. Truly, sailing is more fun in the Philippines.

S/Y OCEAN RUNNER IS FOR SALE The 111-foot custom-built OCEAN RUNNER or “DA RUN FA” in Chinese, was designed for an experienced Taiwanese yachtsman by the well-known Italian designer Massimo Paperini of Duck Design. The original brief for this elegant vessel specified a fast racing yacht to take part in the Taipei-Okinawa race. However OCEAN RUNNER did not race and was used only occasionally for a few cruises to Japan and China and otherwise for day-sailing out of Taipei. She was built in 2009 by the CC Yard in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with a very high specification to a design by Massimo Paperini of Duck Design in Italy. She is constructed almost entirely of exotic materials, such as carbon fibre and Kevlar, some of which are visible in the minimalist and modern, but functional interior. The simple clarity of the interior of OCEAN RUNNER makes her just as suitable for luxurious day cruising as for long-distance blue-water cruising and racing.
20
There will be an opportunity for some lucky people to experience a sail on OCEAN RUNNER because she will be taking VIP’s for a cruise in the early afternoon of 27th February before the Welcoming Party for the Subic Boracay Race 2015.

SAGS HONORED BY PSA Article by Jeremy Simpson Photo by Wondertower Creative
I
n 2003 the first member of SAGS kicked three other sailors into action and started the racing in Subic Bay. One Saturday afternoon, the late Peter Sharpe organised this first race between four boats and christened the group Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailing or SAGS. The four boats, Selma, Shibumi, Irresistible and a small day boat called Body Shot sailed against each other every other week for a year or two. Those first four boats are ‘immortalised’ in the logo of SAGS, pictured in
front of the characteristic hills of Cinco Picos. It wasn’t long before some other boats, attracted to the fun, asked if they could join in the racing. With a healthy mixture of enthusiasm and beer, SAGS has grown up from an ephemeral group of enthusiasts, with no leader, rules, dues, club house or budget, to an incorporated Club with modest fees and a swathe of Commodores, and a number of international offshore races that now are part of the South East Asian Racing circuit. The enthusiasm and energy of this group of sailors has been guided principally by the vision of Jun Avecilla, president of the Lighthouse Marina Resort, who has provided sponsorship and staff to nurse the infant club.
Subic Bay itself has near perfect conditions for sailing, being encircled by land and protected from rough water, while permitting clean sea breezes to blow over the flat waters of the Bay. Visiting international yachtsmen from South East Asia clearly enjoy these conditions and bring their boats from Hong Kong, and beyond to sail in the Regattas organised by SAGS. In recognition of the organisers’ success in developing this sport in the Philippines, the Philippine Sportswriters’ Association, presented SAGS an award for their achievements last February 16, 2015 at One Esplanade in Manila. This annual event honors Filipino athletes, officials, outstanding individuals and organizations who shone brightest both on the local and global stage.
