Editor’s Note Dear readers,

Since the start of my role as the Editor of Lighting Audio Visual Asia (LAVA) magazine, I have learned so much about the world of pro-AV and entertainment lighting. I dare say that I have become more aware of the fact that the kind of technologies you use can make a world of difference into the quality of a production or event. The right products can revive ailing sound and lighting systems; successfully transform shows into immersive audiovisual experiences, and create jaw-dropping effects that leave audiences in awe. This, in turn, has influenced the way I look at certain venues that I visit, such as concerts, theatres, hotels and even restaurants. More often than not, I’d find myself paying closer attention to the audio and lighting systems used in these venues and wonder how much technical effort was put into productions and events that I attend. I suppose the people working in this industry, such as the lighting designers, sound engineers and system integrators, are much like masked heroes—quietly working behind the scenes to ensure an event goes according to plan and that the equipment runs smoothly. They receive little to no recognition from the public, but their efforts are appreciated nonetheless. LAVA has always endeavoured to feature some of the best projects from Asia Pacific and beyond, and I believe that it has done well so far—from interesting interviews with key industry players to in-depth features on installations and products to insightful reports on the industry’s most reputable trade shows. I am excited to see how far this publication will develop in the years to come and how it will continue contributing to this ever-growing industry. While I have been playing an active role in the development of this magazine for the past year or so, I will now take my hands off the wheel. It has been my utmost pleasure to be part of this industry; I’ve faced many exciting challenges on the job and have met interesting people who have inspired me with their sincere passion in their craft. I will now leave LAVA in the hands of the new Editor, Leron Heng, who will take full ownership of all editorial duties from the next issue onwards. In the meantime, do enjoy our latest volume, which as usual is filled with interesting audio-visual and lighting installations across different venues, from concerts to theatres to projection domes. The cover story features the brand new Solaire Theatre in the Philippines, which has been furbished with ETC lighting equipment and a Meyer Sound acoustic system. This issue also includes in-depth coverage of popular tradeshows, such as Prolight + Sound Frankfurt, where we saw many game-changing product launches that will drive the industry forward. I hope you’ll enjoy reading this issue as much I’ve enjoyed putting it together. I bid you the very best of goodbyes! Happy reading! Best regards,

Nur Shakylla Nadhra (Editor)

FINE ART LIGHTING SHINES AT THE 5TH HONG KONG ASIAN-POP MUSIC FESTIVAL 2015

T

he 5 th Hong Kong AsianPop Music Festival 2015 (HKAMF 2015), organised by the Inter national Federation of the Phonographic Industry (Hong Kong Group) Limited and supported by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), was held at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (Hall 5BC) on 27 March 2015. Keeping the same theme of “Music In One Asia", the festival continued its tradition of bringing together top pop performers and budding recording artistes from Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the host city Hong Kong. Fine Art provided more than 200 units of its lighting fixtures for this grand festival. 63 units of the Fine 2500 spot, 56 units of the Fine 2500 wash and 100 units of the Fine X-treme 230Enha illuminated the stage, creating a dazzling backdrop and atmosphere for all the performers. The Fine 2500 series, in particular, is a mature product range known for its stable performance and

excellent function. Featuring infinite linear CMY and CTO colour temperature adjustment, the Fine 2500 wash created vibrant and colourful stage effects that met the festival’s diverse lighting needs. At the same time, the Fine 2500 spot provided the HKAMF audience with fantastic visual lighting effects with its three-facet prism, beam shaper prism and frost lens. This series has been used in many famous events such as the 16 th Asian Games opening ceremony in Guangzhou, the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, and the 2014 Beijing APEC Summit. ENTEC ON THE ROAD WITH THE AUSTRALIAN PINK FLOYD SHOW

E

ntec’s lighting department is enjoying another busy season with The Australian Pink Floyd Show (TAPFS), currently touring Europe with a fabulous Floyd-esque lighting design by Phil White, which is being operated by Tom Mumby. Arguably the longest running and most successful ‘tribute’ show on the planet, Australian Pink Floyd (as they are also known) was formed in Adelaide in 1988. They are renowned for their note-perfect replication of Pink Floyd’s iconic music and style as well as adding their own distinctive elements and humour to the mix, which is particularly visible in the video material and their massive inflatable pink kangaroo, ‘Skippy’. Entec’s working relationship with TAPFS dates back to 2004 when they decided to up the ante in terms of production. W ith the profile of the band growing year-on-year, there has always been constant pressure to ensure that the production keeps pace. Back in the day, Pink Floyd was almost as famous for their lighting and visuals spectacle as they were for their music. Current Lighting Designer Phil White has been weaving his visual magic with TAPFS for around a decade, and as well as recreating some classic rock moments and adding his own twists to help make it an exciting and contemporary live music experience. Upstage there is a five-metre diameter circular truss with a projection screen stretched across the centre, and this is surrounded by 16 x Clay Paky QWO800 Profile moving lights, used for striking effects both shooting across the screen and out from it. Eight 2-lite Molefeys around the truss point outwards, and the truss is toned with i-Pix Satellites. Pink Floyd’s arch is recreated in this show with 10 x 10ft sections of trussing, each individually flown end-on from a 50ft wide mother grid installed in the venue roof. Each of the 10 truss sections has a CP Sharpy Wash and a QWO on it together with a 2-lite Mole on

10

Jul-Sep 2015

the front edge. Four Martin Atomic strobes are placed on four of the 10 trusses. Flown up in the downstage corners of the space are two compact side trusses each with four Sharpy Washes, used for all the cross stage washes and front key lighting. This position provides a very neat and accurate throw of light. The front truss is a 50ft length of mini-beam rigged with six Robe LEDWash 600s for the general stage washes, and five Vari*Lite V*L2000s for band keys, plus a V*L 3000 Spot to cover the three backing vocalists. On the front rail of this truss, four square 4-lite Moles are positioned for illuminating the audience. Guitarist Dave Fowler is heavily involved with creating and managing the video content, which is modified regularly to suit the music being played on the tours year-to-year. On the floor, another eight QWOs are positioned upstage, four in front of the backline and two on each of the risers. There are six Sharpy Washes – three per side – on the front edge of the stage, mainly reserved for high impact during the massive mirror ball moment in “Comfortably Numb”, which finishes the set. Then there are seven Jarags along the front of the stage, utilised for rippling type effects and basic text, which can be written across their

5x5 bulb format. Another four Atomics add to the strobe-tastic factor, and three i-Pix Satellites and four ETC Source Four PARs are strategically placed around the drum kit for the big solos. Lasers include four 4-Watt TARMs owned by the band and eight Beam Bursts provided by ER Productions together with a selection of line grating and diffraction mirrors. The lighting is programmed onto a grandMA full size console, and both lighting and video cues are run to timecode. The lighting rig is designed to be ultimately adaptable and fit into a variety of different sized venues yet still give a great show. The standard stage width size they work on is 50ft, however this can reduced to 40ft very easily, and if they do not have the height, the arch trusses can be dispensed with and the lights rigged on the mother grid instead, another scenario that is also very workable. Chris Gadd, TAPFS Production Manager, commented: “Entec is a brilliant supplier. They always go the extra mile to ensure we are looked after, the attention to detail is excellent … and they are nice friendly people!” TAPFS 2015 is touring Europe until May and in the summer, starts two months in the US.

BOOST YOUR CAREER AT ETC’S CUE CONFERENCE The hands-on classes and reallife education taught at CUE gives attendees the time to fully grasp new concepts and to create designs using what they lear ned. “The time set aside to work on a console and have ETC engineers at my side guiding me through steps and concepts was very valuable and has resulted in more efficient designing and cueing. The CUE conference certainly helped expand my knowledge base,” said Aaron Bahmer, Technical Director at Goshen Community Theatre in Torrington, Wyoming. Brant Hilty, Lighting Programmer at Grace Church in Wooster, Ohio, also got much-needed time to try out what he lear ned: “As a volunteer Lighting Designer / Programmer / Operator for a church, I found attending ETC’s CUE conference to be priceless! I would assume a lot of churches are similar to mine, in that I do not have the opportunity to go into the church during the week to play on the board. At CUE, I can spend an entire day training on my specific board with outstanding instructors. If you run into problems or just have questions on how to do something, they have staff on duty willing to help you out and answer any questions – no matter how small.”

E

TC’s CUE (Create. Understand. Experience.) professionaldevelopment conference can help lighting professionals improve their skills and become more confident in their work. CUE – to be held 26 to 28 June in Madison, W isconsin – will have something for designers and programmers of all skill levels, whether they have years of experience in the most well-known venues, are just getting started in their careers, or consider lighting to be their hobby or side job. The conference is beneficial for professionals who work with all different kinds of lighting, including for theatre, houses of worship, broadcast, dance, academic institutions, architecture, live events, and more. This summer’s CUE conference will be the third end-user event that ETC has held. Attendees to previous CUEs have been able to apply what they’ve lear ned to their everyday work. “The 2013 ETC conference gave me the skills I needed to come back to my theatre and successfully train our current board operator, who had no previous ETC Eos-family knowledge,” described Kearston Dillard-Scott, a Lighting Supervisor at the Virginia Opera Association. “I was also able to gain more knowledge about maintaining systems and used that knowledge to help other venues maintain their consoles and equipment.” Matt Hazard, the Lighting-Studio Manager for the Department of Theatre at the Ohio State University, who attended both CUE 2011 and CUE 2013, had the same experience: “I lear ned about trends in specifying gear for installations and newly-constructed spaces. One of the sessions specifically addressed hybrid theatres, the expanding use of LEDs, and the diminishing need for dimmers. This has been very relevant in one of my technical classes, where we are examining an actual renovation plan for a branch campus.”

The understanding part of CUE can come about from attendees networking with other lighting professionals, both from their industry and outside of it. ETC encourages attendees to share their own experiences and swap ideas. “It was great for me – being from a small venue – to see what the ‘big players’ in the industry can do with upperlevel tools,” explained Bahmer. And ETC ensures that CUE is a one-of-a-kind experience, with attendees leaving with valuable tips and tools relevant to their work. “I think most important to me at the 2013 conference was the fact that ETC wasn’t running just a sales conference – they weren’t promoting the benefits of LEDs in order to make me buy,” Bahmer summarised. “Instead, they were talking about transitional and layered use of LEDs – information I could take home and make decisions about.” To get more information about CUE and to register for the conference, visit www.etcconnect.com/CUE.

ETC JUMP-STARTS THE YEAR OF THE GOAT WITH TRAINING TOUR IN ASIA

I

n February, ETC conducted a regional training tour on the Eos T i® lighting control console for users and clients in Seoul and Hong Kong. Led by ETC trainer Matthias Strobel, and in collaboration with ETC’s authorised dealer C&C Lightway and ETC Asia, the training familiarised new users with the Eos console family’s programming and philosophy, and provided experienced programmers with additional training on advanced features. The Seoul training held by C&C included two sessions, a five-day seminar for their client, TKLS, an influential rental company in Korea that provides equipment for many theatrical shows and other events; and a two-day seminar for the Technical Service department staff of C&C. The TKLS event had 10 participants who were new to the Eos T i console but experienced programmers on other manufacturers’ products. Strobel began the training with an introduction to the console’s hardware layout and its basic command-line syntax, and then moved on to sophisticated control features, such as show control, multiple cue lists, and all kind of effects. While the schedule at C&C mainly focused on recently added software features like the new workspace tools and some advanced features, such as the virtual media server for pixel-mapping and the console setup menu. “The purpose of the Eos T i training was to educate operators at TKLS,” said Hwan-Soo Chung, General Manager of C&C Lightway. “The result was very positive. They were impressed with the console and how it compares with those of other manufacturers.” In Hong Kong, Strobel offered a two-day session to

12

two groups of experienced users from the surrounding area and Taiwan, enhancing their skills and explaining features like Magic Sheets and advanced capabilities in blind. Ten participants attended the training each day, including dealers, rental companies, lighting designers, console programmers, and a university professor. “The training was very helpful regarding console operation, especially for a user like me in theatre lighting,” said Boon Ann Goh, a professor from the Taipei National University of the Arts School of Dance. “I found that the Eos T i console is very user-friendly for lighting designers who work in the theatre. All the control buttons, trimming effects, Magic Sheets and softkeys are easy to learn and understand.” Jit Lam from 3200K Productions, a rental company in Hong Kong, mentioned that the training covered how a new-generation console could help his designs and programming, thanks to “not only its programming speed, but its philosophy,” explained Lam. “Being an expert on other consoles, I never thought I could easily control the tracking or selective record of anything. All these functions in EosT i are super awesome and helpful, letting the designer easily plot or design their lighting cues for the show.” Strobel explained that he always tries keeping his trainings related to real-world examples from his own experience working as a programmer for different lighting designers, since he believes that this helps the trainees remember why and how a feature might be used. “For all of the trainings, we connected computers to the consoles running Capture visualization, so the trainees had a nice lighting rig to work and practice with,” described Strobel.

FINELINE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF LIGHTING AND RIGGING RENTALS

C

locking up a landmark quarter of a century of business in the industry, lighting, rigging and visuals rental company. Fineline celebrates its 25th glorious year in 2015, with a schedule that is already action packed with a wide range of work from music tours and festivals to corporate events. The Bristol based operation was founded by Darren Wring in 1990 as a lighting rental and touring company

and expanded in 2004 to include a manufacturing facility for bespoke staging and scenic elements. Current MD Rob Sangwell joined in 2002 and managed the production lighting and rigging aspects of Fineline until 2011 when he purchased the company with a view to focusing more on the rigging and lighting production, leaving Darren to concentrate on the more esoteric design and manufacturing projects.

GE LIGHTING TO HELP ILLUMINATE THE TOKYO 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES

I

n partnership with Iwasaki Electric, GE Lighting will provide a stronger lighting product portfolio for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

LED lighting, and overall demand in that market alone is expected to swell past $83 million between now and around 2019.

Olympic and Paralympic Games to support operations through the installation of infrastructure equipment.

GE and Iwasaki established a joint venture, EYE Lighting Systems Corporation, in 1973. EYE Lighting has manufactured lighting equipment for stadiums, sports arenas and other athletic facilities in Japan for more than 40 years. Through products manufactured by this collaboration, GE will supply LED lighting solutions for the competition venues of the Tokyo Games. Iwasaki Electric will handle installation and management. Since lighting needs to be installed differently for different sports, such as volleyball and swimming, Iwasaki will work with general contractors.

The benefits of installing LEDs include energy savings of around 50 per cent compared to conventional lighting equipment. It greatly reduces lighting maintenance because of the products’ longevity. LED lighting also ensures even and uniform lighting so that the athletes can concentrate on competing to perform at their best. HARMAN’S MARTIN PROFESSIONAL REVEALS 2015 WINNERS OF ANNUAL YOUNG LIGHTING DESIGNER CONTEST

H

ARMAN’s Martin Professional has announced Jorge Espinoza as the first prize winner of the 2015 Young Lighting Designer Contest. As part of his prize, Espinoza was awarded a trip to the Prolight + Sound 2015 (PL+S) show in Frankfurt, Germany where he was formally presented as the winner at the Martin Professional stand.

In addition to his all-inclusive trip to PL+S 2015, Espinoza has been awarded a brand new Martin M-Touch™ controller and an M-PC™ Kit. Commenting on his win, the 25-year-old from Mexico said: "I really enjoy working with the M-series as it offers the right tools to translate my ideas into real-life shows. I'm pleased and very humbled to be announced as the

Lighting Solutions winner among so much talent. I wanted to share my show and my message, but I never expected to be announced as the winner. Thank you to the judges and everyone who voted for me." Throughout the month of March, amateur lighting designers from around the world programmed their ultimate show and submitted their work to Martin’s Facebook page for a chance to win. A winner was then chosen through a simple process: Facebook users voted for their favorite shows. The three shows with the most votes were then judged by a three-person panel to determine the best show. The panel consisted of 2014 contest winner, Garou Blancan, Martin’s Senior Product Specialist, Michael Feldmann, and Martin’s Product Manager for Controllers, Paul Pelletier. “Jorge gave us an original show that includes moves we rarely

see,” said Pelletier. “The timing is spot on and the programming was structured and clean. The changes between stage light and backlight truly transform the demo stage in ShowDesigner to a fantastic grand stage. The colour choices and transitions throughout the show add extra style and dimension. Jorge’s show has left us really impressed!” Martin also awarded prizes for second and third place. The second place winner was Roman Vakulyuk from Russia. As the runner-up he also received an M-Touch™ control surface for Martin’s M-Series controllers. The third place winner was Ludovic Milien from France who will receive a M-PC™ kit.

SGM AGAIN TAKES HOME THE PRIZE FOR BEST LIGHTING PRODUCT

A

t the Prolight+Sound Inter national Press Award (PIPA), which was held at Frankfurt in April, SGM was nominated for the Q-7 in the category of ‘Best Lighting Product’ for its multipurpose extremely bright luminaire Q-7 RGBW. The company beat out Robe’s BMFL and Martin Professional’s Mac Quantum Wash. Jour nalists from more than 100 dedicated special interest magazines from all over the world were called upon to nominate and vote for the best equipment in the marketplace, and they selected the Q-7. PIPA has established itself as the ‘Grammy’ of the industry, so it was with great honour that SGM’s CEO Peter Johansen and MD of SGM Deutschland Michael Herweg accepted the award. “To be recognised for this ground-breaking LED fixture is amazing. It has quickly become an industry standard and I am proud to see it implemented in so many great designs,” said Peter Johansen. The Q-7 is a low-profile and compact RBGW flood, blind and strobe containing 2,000 powerful LEDs providing 28,000 lumens. It is also available as a Q-7 W with a pure white light output offering a stunning 60,000 lumens – unprecedented in the industry. W ith this recent acknowledgement from industry experts, and with the many installations and tours worldwide, the Q-7 has been established as the product to watch – “with caution”, Johansen said. “It is bloody bright!”

GRANDMA2 ILLUMINATES THE 22ND AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN GAMES

CENTRAL

The opening ceremonies featured several different segments in which the event producers used a large amount of projection. “The main challenge was how to use projection as a cyc element with performers in front and light the performers from 450 feet away without eradicating the projections,” Grill explained. A 30-foot high, three-tiered pyramid-shaped stage was the centerpiece of the opening ceremonies. The all-white structure, which featured three pools, acted as a platform for performances and a projection surface for images. On the east side of the stadium, about 400 feet of the lower balcony rail was rimmed with 108 Clay Paky Sharpy and 32 B-EYE K20. Eight more K20 lined two of the stage’s pools and 18 Sharpy lined the other. Four Robert Juliat Cyrano were mounted on the stage’s followspot platforms.

T

hey may be on a smaller scale than the Olympic Games but the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Games packed just as much glitz and glamour into their opening ceremonies in Veracruz, Mexico. Lighting Designer David Grill, of David Grill and Associates, Inc. (DGA) in Mahwah, New Jersey, used grandMA2 lighting consoles to illuminate the festivities.

Grill and his team also lit the Games’ closing ceremonies. Montreal-based Solotech provided the gear. A.C.T Lighting, Inc. is the exclusive distributor of MA Lighting in the USA and Canada.

The Central American and Caribbean Games are held every four years with athletes from the region competing in a variety of sports, some of which qualify them for the Pan American Games. The Games were staged in the newly refurbished Estadio Luis ‘Pirata’ Fuente in Veracruz, where more than a million people watched approximately 5,700 participating athletes. Lighting Director Paul Sonnleitner programmed the lighting using two grandMA2 full-size consoles, two grandMA2 light and a MA onPC command wing as well as a MA onPC fader wing. The two grandMA2 full-size served as the main and backup consoles in the control booth. The grandMA2 light were used in the field to focus from different locations, such as the center of the pyramid stage; the onPC system was deployed in the tech area to repair fixtures or check the rig. “As it was a stadium, I specked two grandMA2 light so that one could be mobile from each side of the field,” said Sonnleitner. “That way, I could programme from one position and send the electricians to move the other focus desk to an alternate position without losing precious dark time. Moving anything in a stadium takes time.” “The onPC system was for the technicians so they could repair fixtures,” he added. “If I wasn’t in until later in the day, they could also connect to the session, strike up and check out the rig for me without making the lengthy trip to the booth. It is always easy to use and reliable. The network was flawless, and the desk was outstanding. Stuff that used to take hours and hours on other systems is now just a matter of a wave of the ‘magic wand’.”

DPA MICROPHONES GETS A BACKSTAGE PASS TO THE 2015 KENTUCKY MUSIC HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY The compact nature of the d:vote and d:dicate mics were also well-suited to this event. “I needed a cleanlooking stage for the broadcast and subsequent pictures,” said Cottrill. “The d:vote clips allowed me to do away with the majority of my microphone stands, and the slim and lightweight d:dicate 2011C allowed me to use microphone stands needed that were small and unobtrusive.” To support his DPA microphone collection, Cottrill relied on a JBL VT4888 PA system with OAP subs, and a Yamaha M7CL-48 for mixing. Monitor Engineer, Dwayne King, also selected an identical console. Cottrill and King were joined by FOH tech Rick Raynes; AV Coordinator Danny Davis, President and CEO of Pro Video Audio Productions, which provided the sound design for the show; and Operations and Production Manager Eric Weber.

D

PA Microphones was front and centre at the 2015 Kentucky Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on 10th April 2015, when blockbuster artists such as Montgomery Gentry and members of the Backstreet Boys performed. Tony Cottrill, the event’s FOH Engineer and Director of Live Sound for the Blackbird Academy in Nashville, called on his supply of supercardioid d:vote™ 4099D Drum Mics and cardioid d:dicate™ 2011C Recording Microphones for the drum kit used by the event’s inductee performances.

Cottrill is planning to include additional DPAs on stage for the 2016 ceremony. “Next year, I’m going to utilise the vast array of DPA’s microphone accessories for covering typical difficult live miking solutions like mandolin, fiddle, acoustic guitar and dobro,” he concluded.

Cottrill carefully crafted this full DPA array for the drums. “Rather than using a hodge-podge of different popular drum microphones, my preferred approach is to mic the kit with products from a single manufacturer,” he explained. “This gives me consistent off-axis frequency response, which is critical on a drum kit where there is no isolation between drums. By using one brand throughout, I’m able to ensure that each microphone adds to the sound of the other drums and cymbals for one complete overall composite picture of the kit, rather than individual thumbnails of sound.” While the d:votes were attached directly to the individual drums and cymbals, the d:dicate 2011Cs were used as overheads. “I chose the DPA 2011Cs because they are natural-sounding and offer full frequency response,” continued Cottrill. “The 2011s come as true, matched/stereo pairs, which gives me 100 percent true stereo frequency response from left and right kits. I prefer this overall drum kit sound, rather than one that primarily picks up the high frequency content of the cymbals.” Another reason Cottrill selected DPA mics is their ability to withstand high SPL levels. “This is especially critical in drum miking,” he added. “I prefer this to using built-in mic pads and filters, which only adds unwanted colour to an otherwise natural-sounding microphone and instrument.”

MC twotwo.5 active loudspeakers have been installed in two new broadcast studios created by Veale Associates for the Ealing School of Art, Design and Media (part of the University of West London). The studios are part of a £50 million pound campus regeneration scheme for the University aimed at improving students’ learning and social experience. They are now being used to teach students on the University's BA (Hons) in Radio and Multimedia Audio Production

course the relevant creative and technical skills. Justin Randell, Veale Associate's Technical Consultant who specified the PMC speakers, said: “The Broadcast studios at University of West London were designed to mirror professional facilities in radio, whilst also providing enhanced teaching functionality. We chose the PMC twotwo.5 speakers because these are a natural evolution from the TB2s used in professional broadcast facilities. They offer excellent sound monitoring, which

is essential to ensure radio content is transmitted clearly as it goes out on air. The compact cabinet size also makes them easier to mount when space is at a premium." Both Studios are identically equipped with a Lawo Crystal mixer and Pro Tools with RedNet at the heart of each system. Paul Lohneis, Head of Film and Media at UWL, added: “This new facility will put us at the forefront of HE radio and multimedia audio teaching in the UK.”

PAN ACOUSTICS IS THE AUDIO SYSTEM OF CHOICE FOR SWITZERLAND’S

BERNER MÜNSTER The reformed Berner Münster was dedicated in the late Middle Ages to St. Vincent of Saragossa, and is the largest and most important late-medieval church of Switzerland. It was built in the Gothic style and is one of the Gothic churches that were completed in the 19th century after the emergence of Historicism. The choir of the cathedral holds a stained glass window from the 15th-century cycle, which, together with that of the former convent Church Königsfelden, is considered to be the most important in Switzerland. The Berner Münster is recorded in 1983 in the World Heritage list of UNESCO. According to the requirements, the renovation of the electro-acoustic sound of this church is very sophisticated. The starting point of this installation was a neutral submission through the entire replacement of audio system from the 1980s. The sound lines proposed in the offer input should be good for speech and music, and were measured by the EMPA prior to the award of the contract in the Church

and analysed. The reverberation time of six seconds made the demand after a STI; 0.6, one of the most difficult criteria to meet. The measurement results of the offered sound lines served as the main basis for the decision. Sound System In the nave, 33 passive Pan Beam PB 8-15 were chosen thanks in part to the extremely high speech intelligibility. They were also chosen for the visual optics of these slim loudspeaker systems. For conservation reasons, the tolerance in the optical aspects of the new sound system was very small. The system’s reasonably light weight of just five kilograms, very slender sound pillar (with their 16 x 2.1” drivers), long stroke chassis, and the wiring, which largely had to be taken over, convinced the installation team that this was the right choice as it provided simple yet versatile mounting options. An optimal and constant coverage of the audience area was achieved with the extremely wide angle of 140°.

n November last year, the Solaire Resort and Casino in the Philippines raised the curtain on a luxurious new performance venue called The Theatre at Solaire. Considered the most advanced theatre in the country, the fan-shaped, 1,760-seat music hall comes equipped with Electronic Theatre Control’s (ETC) array of lighting equipment and Meyer Sound’s Constellation® acoustic system. The Theatre at Solaire is now the highlight of the Solaire Resort and Casino, a massive complex along the Bay City area of Parañaque City and is the first of four casino resorts in the area. With this installation, the venue joins a range of world-class live performance spaces equipped with Meyer

Sound’s Constellation—from SoundBox in San Francisco and Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York to Mexico City’s Teatro Telcel, Norway’s Fosnavåg Konserthus, Moscow’s Svetlanov Hall, and South Korea’s Sohyang Arts Center. The theatre’s stage technology system was designed and specified by Coherent Design, a Las Vegas and Hong Kong-based theatrical consulting group. Considering the ambitious scale of the project, the team faced a unique challenge due to the fact that there are few theatres in the country. In addition, having technical support nearby was an absolute necessity, especially when it came to programming and commissioning the theatre’s lighting and audio systems.

The Theatre at Solaire is fitted with ETC’s Sensor®3 power control, Unison® Paradigm® architectural system, and Eos Ti® entertainment-lighting control system. The decision to choose ETC came fairly easy for David Starck, Managing Partner of Coherent Design. He has worked with the international manufacturer of entertainment and architectural lighting systems for many years and has faith in the company’s products and service. “The experience that ETC Asia had in similar facilities and the training they were able to give to the local integrator was essential to pulling the project off in an extremely condensed timeframe,” he said. Starck and fellow principal, Kevin Potts, worked in consultation with the Singapore office of Aedas, theatre design architects. Six ETC Sensor3 power control racks fitted with 576 modules, including ThruPower modules, were specified and installed. “The ThruPower modules are ideal for the Solaire project and most projects these days. More and more lighting instruments are going to LED and movers, so having the ability to switch from a dimmable to a true non-dimmable circuit quickly is a huge advantage,” explained Starck. The venue also employs an Eos Ti lighting desk with 8,000 outputs. The flagship console of the Eos® family, Eos Ti provides the bold features and increased control capacity that the iconic venue requires. Additionally, an ETC Unison Paradigm architectural control system is used for houselights and worklights. Said Starck: “The Paradigm system was the only logical choice to bring it all together and allow for houselight control from both the in-house console and any touring consoles. It also allows for easy control by staff for all of the back-of-house lights, such as the in the galleries, grid, and control booths.”

The Theatre at Solaire has also become the first venue in the Philippines to be equipped with a Meyer Sound Constellation® acoustic system. Designed and engineered from the outset to combine architectural and electronic acoustics, this luxurious new performance venue has since scheduled a mix of international and local music acts, as well as Broadway musicals such as ‘Chicago’ and ‘Singin’ In the Rain’. “With Constellation, we can offer the optimum acoustical environment for any type of performance,” said Shax Siasoco, Technical Director for the venue. “Constellation is now a prime calling card for the venue,” said Dale Schulz, the resort’s Technology Director. “It wasn’t until the system was installed and you can see the audience react with astonishment. It certainly is satisfying for all of us involved with the project.” To make the room amenable to Constellation’s capabilities, Starck worked with the architect to achieve a reverberation time of less than one second in the 1,761-seat venue. Adjustable acoustics are then provided by a Constellation system comprising the D-Mitri® digital audio platform with the patented VRAS™ acoustical algorithms, while ambient acoustics are captured by 63 miniature condenser microphones. Early reflections and reverberation are delivered by 93 MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers, 55 Stella-4C and 41 Stella-8C installation loudspeakers, 24 UPJunior-XP VariO™ loudspeakers, and 16 UMS-SMXP subwoofers. For amplified performances, the venue features dual hangs of 12-each MICA® line array loudspeakers and a flown directional array of six 1100-LFC lowfrequency control elements. A UPQ2P loudspeaker supplies center fill, six UPM-1XP loudspeakers provide front fill, and a Galileo® Callisto™ loudspeaker management system with three Galileo Callisto 616 array processors handles drive and optimization. Manila-based All Visual & Lights Systems installed both the Constellation and reinforcement systems.

THE FOUNTAIN OF DREAMS: THE WORLD’S FIRST MULTIMEDIA WATERFALL THEATRE

38

If anybody needs another reason to visit one of China’s most beautiful world-heritage regions, this is it: The Fountain of Dreams—a breathtaking new nighttime spectacular where technical innovation meets ancient storytelling. This audio-visual show was created and produced by French-based showmakers, ECA2.

In the town of Wuyishan, at the heart of north-west Fujian’s tranquil tea-growing mountains, something very special is happening. Already identified as a world heritage site by UNESCO, the region is playing host to “The Fountain of Dreams”, a

spectacular and enchanting tribute to Wuyishan’s natural setting, using never-beforeseen techniques to create an unforgettable and immersive audio-visual experience. At the core of “The Fountain of Dreams” is the simple beauty and power of nature: its generous waters that sculpted the region’s emblematic mountains, and the nine twists and turns of its famous river. The Wuyishan government chose the French Show Production company, ECA2, for its ability to deliver a complementary turnkey show, rich in exciting light and sound, and ground-breaking effects.

New, Immersive, And Emotional Every aspect has been painstakingly developed by ECA2—from show concept and theatrical decor to design of the seating stands. To create a truly remarkable signature show for Wuyishan in particular, the waterfalltheatre feature—a world first—is designed to bring the spectator inside the action. The monumental waterfall closely mimics the neighbouring mountains and dramatically comes to life by changing form in unexpected ways. Terraces in the decor echo the region’s active tea-growing terraces. Through 12 compelling scenes, the story of Wuyishan’s fabled waters unfolds. Water curtains are all around, transforming into free-flowing rivers. Flashes, flames, 3D video mapping, LED, lasers, cascading waters, music and ghostly characters from China’s traditional past all interact. The stage, seating, a pond and even the roof become one unified staging area. 17-metre high showers fall into rivers between the seating. Many effects come from amongst the spectators, so the feeling of being “part of the show” or even “part of the scenery” is not just an expression. A Triumph Over Technical Challenges Much of the multimedia magic is thanks to special effects gadgetry concealed within the roof. W ith its contemporary cantilever design, it seems to float weightlessly.

©Show : ECA2 / Photo : Julien PANIE

The video mapping posed particularly tricky problems for the team. W ith images projected onto the irregular 3D shapes of the set, multiple scans had to be made to achieve seamless imagery. SINGAPORE’S VOX CHOOSES DPA MICROPHONES FOR LIVE PERFORMANCES

The company’s d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones are perfect for capturing the acoustic vibe of this classically trained quartet. VOX is rapidly establishing itself as one of the premier live bands from Singapore. Founded by four classicallytrained musicians, the group’s bold reinterpretations of rock classics from artists as diverse as Muse, The Rolling Stones and Adele have turned heads and earn them wild reviews at some major Singaporean events, including the Singapore Grand Prix, the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games and the Singapore Yacht Show. The band has been experimenting with mashups, fusing classical and rock pieces together such as on the piece ‘Smoke Symphony’ that couples Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke on the Water’ together with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. And concerts last year covered the entire gamut of musical styles from Electronica to Grunge Rock, Urban Funk to Hip Hop, all, according to the band, “sprinkled with a good amount of 90s cheese and

power girl bands”. Finding the right mics to capture all that has been a difficult journey, but with DPA the band thinks that it has finally arrived at the destination they desire. “When we first got started, VOX was pretty much at the mercy of the sound equipment that was used by the equipment hire company chosen by our clients. Instead of giving us wireless instrument microphones, they would give us lapel mics that were more suitable for speech. Obviously, these were not suited to picking up the sound of our strings,” explained cellist Tow Huiwen. “This caused our sound to be metallic and sharp and was not what we were looking for at all.” Then, by chance, one of the venues they were performing at fitted the band with DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones. “The ease of fitting the microphones to our instruments

TECHNOLOGIES and the pick up was fantastic,” said violinist Justine Loh. “We could finally hear the warmth and the natural acoustic of our instruments. After that gig, DPA was always at the top of our minds. We have had the opportunity afterwards to be fitted with many other instrument mics, but the DPA d:vote 4099 stands out from the rest.” Violinist Lester Kong added that a mic has to do several things for VOX. “As our instruments are acoustic, a mic has to make us sound natural and not metallic and hard,” he said. “It has to provide enough room for the strings and the instrument to vibrate freely. It needs to be easy to fit but we also have to ensure that the way the microphone is fitted does not cause any damage to our instrument, such as scratching the varnish. Lastly, it must not get in our way during a performance.” VOX was supplied with its DPA microphones by the company’s Singaporean distributor Uni-DK. The close collaboration between VOX and DPA is a win-win situation for both sides: VOX is now using

mics that best reflect the acoustic qualities of their instruments, while DPA benefits because this group of incredibly talented musicians is highlighting the capabilities of the d:fine 4099s in a demanding live setting. “We are truly delighted to be using DPA,” said violinist Melissa Liew. “Whatever musical direction we move in, we can have the utmost confidence that the sound heard by the audience is exactly the one we want to deliver.”

ETC GOES ON A JOURNEY WITH MONKEY GOES WEST Photos cour tesy of W!ld R ice Ltd.

Singapore theatre company W!LD RICE looks East for inspiration, and its latest production, Monkey Goes West—a pantomime take on the Chinese classic novel Journey to the West—was an absolute triumph, attracting more than 10,000 spectators in a holiday show. The enchanting lighting was the soul of this tongue-in-cheek musical, thanks to ETC’s Source Four® LED Series 2 luminaires and Source Four LED CYC adapters. The story was placed in a modern-day Singapore context, written by W!LD RICE’s resident playwright, Alfian Sa’at, and directed by Sebastian Tan. It depicted the adventure of an orphan, Ah Tang, who ran away from home and found himself in a mythical land where he met the monkey king and the river ogres Sandy and Pigsy. Lighting designer Adrian Tan said that the team wanted to explore the idea of using light to enhance the storytelling of the show during the initial creative process. “Playing with shadows and light on backdrops, gauzes and cycloramas were very important design approaches,” explained Tan.

He used eight Source Four LED Series 2 luminaires together with Source Four CYC adapters to illuminate the cyclorama. Five units were placed two meters away from the bottom of the cyclorama and three units overhead, which allowed him more space for set pieces upstage and to hang more lights on the limited lighting bars that he had. “I have never seen such power and versatility packed into one tiny fixture,” Tan enthused. Lighting designers often light their cycloramas with L120 or L181 Dark Blue/Congo Blue, which can be washed out by front-of-house fixtures and moving lights. “In this case, it didn’t happen,” Tan noted. “I had the ETC Source Four LED Series 2 in a full indigo on the cyclorama, and I had my profiles and moving lights in white. The indigo still stood out and looked beautiful among the dry ice and white light on stage.” “I firmly believe that ETC has got it right and is ahead of everyone else in LED technology in terms of size, colour, dimming and consistency. I would recommend it to anyone at any time,” concluded Tan. The production has been nominated for the Life! Theatre Awards, leading the pack with six nominations, including Production of the Year.

JAPAN’S FAMOUS HIMEJI CASTLE REOPENS WITH MARTIN AUDIO

After an extensive renovation that took five years to complete, the historic Himeji Castle’s grand reopening ceremony was an event not to be missed. The renovation of what is considered Japan’s most spectacular castle, commonly known as Hakuro-jō (White Egret Castle) or Shirasagi-jō (White Heron Castle) because of its brilliant white exterior, began in October 2009. It involved returning the walls to ‘the white egret’ whilst repairing the kawara tiled roof, and the recreation of the symbolic Shachihoko (Japanese mythological animal) decorating its ridge. The opening ceremony was held before an invited

audience of 1,000 people, including government officials and politicians, and saw Martin Audio’s MLA Compact Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array brought into play alongside the acrobatic aeroplane team, The Blue Impulse. Kobe International Stage Service (KISS) was in charge of sound duties, and it immediately chose this awardwinning system to reinforce the audio quality of this prestigious event. There have been many shows produced in this park over the years, but it has been extremely difficult to deliver equal and smooth coverage to more than 100-meter

“The layout was decided to suit the efficiency of the staging although it was not ideal for sound engineers,” the system technician, Mr. Katanami, explained. “I changed the coverage area of the system using different optimisations and adopted the infill system for the relevant areas. I also zoned the system to give me greater control of the downfill cabinet.” Mr Katanami confirmed that there was to be another stage at the same venue the following week and had no hesitation in fielding the MLA Compact system. “Not only the intelligibility, but also the controllability of any sound leakage is remarkable,” he added. And even when the brass band played directly in front of the PA system, the unique software control of MLA proved equal to the challenge.

depth using conventional point source systems. “But after using MLA Compact, I never felt any stress on the system whatsoever,” stated FOH Sound Engineer, Mr. Tsudawho. Six MLA Compact enclosures per side were rigged in the tower, with two DSX subwoofers ground-stacked.

The Himeji Castle site is surrounded by a zoo and many residential properties, and so careful management of the noise pollution problem was essential. In addition, the Himeji government is now fully aware of the unique control properties of MLA as a result of this event.

SYMETRIX SYMNET DELIVERS STUDIO-QUALITY SOUND AT RECORDING COMPLEX IN SOUTH KOREA K-Pop is perhaps the most internationally well-known product of a South Korean music scene that has become increasingly diverse and dynamic during the last few decades. The South Korea Government has been keen to support the growth of their independent music industry, and has recently co-sponsored a new recording and rehearsal facility geared towards up-and-coming acts that employs a Symetrix SymNet Radius 12x8 open architecture Dante-scalable DSP for audio processing and routing. AV distributor and installer Sound Solution was enlisted to work on the project, which was completed during 2014. In addition to working on elements including the safety and communication systems, Sound Solution furnished Musistance (whose name is a compound created from ‘Music’ and ‘Resistance’) with core audio components and a Dante-based network infrastructure. “Utilising Symetrix’ superior support for the Dante media networking technology was a key solution for this project, as there was a need to transport audio across multiple spaces and process it centrally,” explained Lisa Lee, Marketing Manager at

SHANGHAI CHINESE ORCHESTRA RELIES ON SHURE FOR CONCERT TOUR

ULX-D Wireless Systems Deliver Uncompromising Sound Despite Complex Audio Challenges Earlier this year, the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra travelled to Europe to perform its Great Chinese New Year Concerts in celebration of the year of the goat. The concert tour took the orchestra to several countries, including Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Germany, and included eight concerts within a period of only two weeks. To enable the orchestra performers to fully demonstrate

the vast depth of Chinese arts to the world and present the quality characteristics of traditional Chinese instruments and playing techniques, a wireless system was required to deliver the pristine sound of guqin, liuqin, cello, pipa, and the speeches of the master of ceremony. Yu Gu, Sound Engineer of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, explained: “Given the intense touring schedule and travel fatigue, my criteria for choosing the audio equipment was to have a wireless system that is light and portable, has good anti-interference capability,

TECHNOLOGIES high quality sound and wide dynamic range, and is equipped with wireless scanning and backup features.” After careful consideration, he selected the Shure ULX-D Digital Wireless System, including ULXD4Q Quad Channel Receivers, ULX-D1 Bodypack Transmitters, as well as ULX-D2 Handheld Wireless Transmitters with BETA58 microphone heads. Handling Varying Mixing Consoles With Ease Most of the concert venues in Europe were well-designed concert halls with good acoustics. However, the Sound Engineer did not know beforehand which mixing consoles would be available at the different locations. The team eventually encountered various models, ranging from analogue to digital, with varying gain control performance. Yu Gu recalled: “We used wireless bodypack transmitters to reinforce the sound from the different instruments. However, they all had varying dynamic sound pressure and weren’t always playing simultaneously. Gain controls on the mixing consoles varied widely and we initially believed this would create quite a challenge for our sound team. What pleasantly surprised me was the gain adjustment feature of the ULX-D receiver. It allowed me to optimise the dynamic range for the various instruments while standing at the mixing console. I could easily make the corrections on the receiver and was spared having to walk around to manually change the settings on each transmitter. This made my job a lot easier and made it possible to switch freely between different mixing consoles and instruments.” Dealing With Environments

Complicated

RF

The sound team also had to plan the frequency assignment throughout the tour. Yu Gu admitted that while he had personally completed training in Shure wireless frequency planning and had been using Shure products for more than 10 years, he still approached the complicated RF situation at certain venues with caution. At the KKL Luzern (Switzerland) in particular, a large electronic screen and a steel screen stood between wireless receivers and transmitters. This setup caused concern during

56

TECHNOLOGIES preliminary wireless frequency planning; however, the ULX-D system helped to put the sound team at ease. Paired with the Wireless Workbench 6 (WWB 6) software, which was installed on a laptop and connected to the ULX-D receivers, the Shure system effectively utilised frequency resources and significantly boosted the number of compatible frequencies in the crowded RF environment of the concert hall. According to Yu Gu, they were able to pick out more than 40 clean frequencies even with all interference sources turned on, resulting in a very stable RF performance throughout both rehearsal and concert. Yu Gu also listed the concert at the Cottbus State Theatre (Germany) as an example of the exceptional performance of the Shure equipment. The concert coincided with an outdoor festival, and wireless scanning identified RF interference from several private systems as well as other non-Shure wireless equipment. The sound team successfully used the WWB 6 software to scan and calculate

frequencies, also incorporating information on other wireless system brands and their frequency points. Considering all interference sources, the software was still able to calculate more than 40 open frequencies, which was more than enough to successfully deliver the concert.

interference detection, excellent sound quality, and choice of an array of microphone form factors that could reproduce uncompromising sound without any colouration. Sound quality remained clear and refined for all kinds of performances throughout the tour, from simple folk songs to grand orchestral movements.

The sound team brought a range of additional Shure accessories to prepare for the varying conditions for wireless transmission. To extend the wireless transmission range, the team packed the UA8 1/2 wave omnidirectional receiver antenna together with the UA860SWB passive wide-band omnidirectional antenna. For frequency scanning and backup purposes, the Shure WWB 6 software was a really useful add-on. Yu Gu added: “I also brought backup transmitters, which we placed at the stage entrance in case of unexpected events, although in the end we never had to use them. The wireless equipment worked perfectly throughout the eight concerts and provided stable signals without any issues.”

Regarding the quality of the bodypack transmitters, Yu Gu was very pleased and explained: “They worked really well and were able to withstand intense pressure and also the body sweat of the players. Throughout the tour, the bodypacks were worn near the waist on the back, underneath the orchestra members’ suit jackets. The concert dates were very close to each other, and the equipment had to be packed and loaded into the tour vehicles without being wiped or dried before proceeding to the next city. The bodypacks were sometimes stuck on trucks for several days, and sweat stains and salt were found on the bodypacks at the next performance location. However, thanks to the enduring quality of Shure, the equipment remained functional throughout the whole tour.”

Easy To Carry, Enduring Quality Due to the packed concert schedule and tour plan of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, high portability of the audio equipment was a very important factor. The selection of Shure ULX-D4Q Quad Channel Wireless Receiver saved the team a lot of transportation expenses and space; although according to Yu Gu, this was only one of the many advantages. He further added the large dynamic range of 120DB, detachable antennas, continuous

58

Jul-Sep 2015

Responding to the question of how he managed to deal with all the difficult situations that the team encountered during the two-week tour, Yu Gu concluded: “Based on my extensive experience with Shure products, I knew I could rely on their flawless and solid performance. Even though we faced several challenges at the various concert venues, the Shure systems always lived up to their excellent reputation and helped to make the tour a great success for us.”

Colour 5 Profile By Elation Professional www.elationlighting.com

The Colour 5 Profile is an ellipsoidal spot that houses a 180W five-colour RGBAM LED engine (Red, Green, Blue, Amber, Mint) for an expanded palette of colors, including stunning ambers and true whites. The “Mint” LED incorporated in the LED engine enhances the production of variable white color temperatures from 3,200 to 6,500K and increases the CRI. The Colour 5 Profile emits 4,100 lumens of power. Colors mix uniform from vibrant saturates across beautiful pastels to authentic warm and cool shades of white. The Colour 5 Profile includes a DMX-controllable electronic strobe for pulse effects and are 0-100% dimmable for full control of light intensity. A selection of variable dimming curves is also provided for faster programming. A host of other features come standard like multi-channel DMX control, 3 and 5-pin DMX In/Out, PowerCON In/Out connections and a 4-button control panel with LCD menu display. An integrated rigging yoke allows for easy hanging and an auto-sensing power supply means the fixtures can operate anywhere in the world. Both luminaires operate flicker free and are excellent choices when variable colored or warm white light is required in television, film or theatre.

Source Four LED Fresnel adapter

By ETC www.etcconnect.com/S4LEDSystem* There’s another tool in the Source Four® LED toolbox. ETC is announcing a new optic, the Source Four LED Fresnel adapter, which attaches to the front end of a Source Four LED Series 2 or Series 1 light engine, turning it into a superior washlight. The Source Four LED Fresnel adapter’s highly tuned optics help create smooth light with soft edges. Its light blends evenly and uniformly from fixture to fixture. And it allows barn-dooring and the addition of 7.5-inch accessories, so even the most discerning designer can sculpt the light to the right specifications. Because the Source Four LED light engines benefit from the extensive colour-mixing research ETC has done, the Source Four LED Fresnel can output tunable white light that flawlessly illuminates people or objects, or the most expansive range of bold colour possible from an LED source. It has the comforts of traditional Fresnels – like the ability to frame the light – but the Source Four LED light engine takes the Source Four LED Fresnel to a whole new level with exceptional colour, high brightness and energy efficiency. Its outstanding light quality makes it a must-have for the stage and the screen.

G-1 Beam By SGM sgmlight.com

The G-1 Beam is a sharply defined, flat and uniform beam that operates rapidly in every movement, providing intense mid-air beam effects through a high power white LED light source, a colour wheel and a gobo wheel. The results are high contrast levels and extreme brightness. Adding to its uniqueness, this moving head is not only IP65-rated and maintenance-free, but also offers the exclusive choice of being either battery-driven with an impressive 10-12 hours operation in typical use or being connected wired mains power. It provides a staggering output of 61,910 lux at a three-metre distance and a colour temperature of 6,500K on pure white light. The G-1 is equipped with a 2.8˚ fixed beam angle; however, it can deliver an aperture zoom adjustable down to 0.3˚. Its motorised focus is both fast and precise. The G-1 comes in two varieties: with or without the base unit. With the base, usability is diverse as a battery can be inserted and thus positioning is independent from any power source proximity, and the IP rating ensures no need of bulky domes for outdoor application. Without the base, the G-1 can be mounted onto a ceiling or a rig in, for example, a club environment for that powerful and bright beam effect that operates in high-speed movements using an external power supply.

F8-200 LED Fresnel By Zylight www.zylight.com

Designed to be compact for field use, the new addition to the F8 product line delivers the brightness of a 2,000-watt Tungsten or 400-watt HMI fixture, but can be powered by AC or two 14.4V standard Gold Mount or V-Mount batteries. Built on the same chassis as Zylight’s award-winning F8-100, the F8-200 includes an active cooling system, collapses to less than five inches thick for easy transport, and is water resistant (IP54) for use in challenging conditions. It also maintains many of the features of the original F8-100, including an adjustable beam spread (16-70 degrees) and Zylight’s patented focusing system for spot and flood operations. It has a high CRI (color rendering index) as well as a high TLCI (Television Lighting Consistency Index), and an eight-inch SCHOTT glass lens maintains single shadow traditional Fresnel beam shaping. The portable F8-200 can be powered by AC adapter and used as part of a studio lighting grid. With built-in DMX and ZyLink wireless technology, it can also be linked with multiple Zylights for simultaneous remote control. The F8-200 ships with barn doors and yoke mount, and is available in tungsten (3200K) or daylight (5600K) versions.

One of the show’s co-organisers, China Audio Industry Association, is actively recruiting key audio buyers from China to the show. The association’s Secretary Mr LiXin Chen explained: “Over the past 12 years, the show has attracted up-scale overseas brands and suppliers from local key manufacturing hubs such as Enping, Ningbo, Panyu and Shenzhen. Its international profile and quality exceeded similar kinds of trade fairs in China, and this is important for buyers who aim for better and wider sourcing options.” Numerous educational fringe events will also be held at the show to bring in more professional buyers and experts and add value to their visit. One of the industry supporters, Mr Randell Greenlee, Director for International Relations & Communication, the Professional Lighting & Sound Association of Germany (VPLT) believes the show is an important trade platform. Each year VPLT brings industry experts to speak at the show’s fringe events. “The Prolight + Sound brand is a world-wide brand. I hope many German companies will join the Shanghai show because we believe this is a very important market to be a part of,” Mr Greenlee said. Many exhibitors regard Prolight + Sound Shanghai as an unparalleled meeting point with thousands of key distributors from China through the show’s buyer delegations and fringe programme. One such exhibitor is Guangzhou Ruifeng Audio Technology. The company’s Executive Deputy Manager, Mr Frank Zhu, said: “The show brings in many buyer delegations, which will bring us new business opportunities. It is also a good idea to set up outdoor line array demonstrations and seminars at the show because visitors can see what’s new in the market.” For more information about the Shanghai show, please visit www.prolightsound-shanghai.com.

“As organiser of the show, we are extremely pleased with the overwhelming response to this year’s edition of InfoComm China,” said Richard Tan, Executive Director of InfoCommAsia. “The double digit percentage growth in the number of exhibitors and visitors met our expectations, strengthening the reputation of InfoComm China as one of the best tradeshows of its kind in Asia Pacific.” The success of InfoComm China 2015 was evident in the buzz and excitement on the packed exhibition floor over the three days. as well as trade and channel professionals, mingled with solution providers to discuss and explore pro-AV and ICT solutions that address their diverse needs. Delivering A Practical And Value-Added Line-Up “Beyond the record-breaking participation and attendance, it has been a very exciting show with many major product launches and unveiling of new innovations focusing on the promises of digital technology,” said Tan. “InfoComm China is on track to become Asia Pacific’s pro-AV and ICT epicentre with many global and emerging brands staging the global launch of their new innovations at our inaugural World Premiere platform.” “I have been visiting InfoComm China since its very first installment. For industry professionals who wish to know more about the latest trends and market products, this exhibition is a great help,” said Gu Keming, GM of TFTL Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd. “The showcase of new products is a lot more interesting. The rewards of being here are immense.” The InfoComm China Summit, running in conjunction with the exhibition, also won much appreciation and plaudits by both speakers and attendees. Over the three days of the Summit, delegates from diverse vertical markets and industry channels engaged enthusiastically in discussions, debates and exchanges on the impact of digital technology and on the future of the industry. “I am attending InfoComm China for the second time, and am very glad to see the addition of English sessions to the Summit. The AudioForum’s specialised nature makes it a great highlight. Indeed, forums should focus more on technical skills and less on marketing current products,” said Huang I-Hua, Audio-Visual System Designer/Theatre Consultant. “It is when we are introduced to topics that we do

not fully understand that we really learn. This also makes panel sessions livelier and meaningful. I am very glad that InfoComm China took the step and added the forum to its line-up. My attendance this year has been a great investment of my time.” Testaments To Reliability & Trust “InfoComm China is a good opportunity for us to showcase our latest product offerings, and also to meet with valuable customers, old and new,” said Jeff Gibson, VP International Sales at Extron Electronics. “InfoComm China gathers people who are really interested in pro-audio. It provides the perfect environment for pro-audio companies to discuss business and trade,” said Mario Di Cola, Senior Loudspeaker System Engineer from Audio Labs Systems and one of the speakers at the AudioForum. “AudioForum is still something new to the market, yet the turnout was encouraging. The audience was interested and keen to learn. This is a good start to bringing more knowledge to a relatively new market segment that has so much potential.”

With full aisles, a busy atmosphere on the exhibition stands and a high grade conference programme, Prolight + Sound 2015 underscored its position as the leading international trade fair for the event technology and entertainment sector. The Professional Lighting & Sound Association of Germany (Verband für Licht-, Ton- und Veranstaltungstechnik VPLT) was also very pleased with the results of the fair: “From our point of view, it was once again clear that the heart of the sector beats at Prolight + Sound,” said Helge Leinemann, Member of the Board of VPLT.

T

he international Prolight + Sound trade fair at Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre closed its doors on the evening of 18 April after a successful four-day run jam-packed with activities. “Over 108,000 visitors from 146 countries witnessed a dazzling display of new products, stars and events presented by 2,257 exhibitors1. Prolight + Sound confirmed its role as a source of impulse for event presentation and new business contacts,” said Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt.

review Innovations For Even More Effective Events The event business and expectations on impressive productions are growing constantly. This year, Prolight + Sound presented everything necessary for creating a spectacular event whereby the sector is more innovation-driven than virtually any other. Prolight + Sound reflected many of the trends that spur the industry. For example, 3D mapping technology makes building facades come to life, digital sound mixing and mobile recording technologies provide for increasing flexibility while high-resolution displays ensure pinsharp images – increasingly with a touch function too. Moreover, the sector is attaching greater importance to sustainability. Economical amplifiers, LED lighting and projectors with long service lives make ‘green events’ increasingly realistic. “The impression made by this year’s Prolight + Sound is very positive, vibrant and dynamic. Here, we encounter an exceedingly heterogeneous clientele and are very pleased with the course of business. We have been able to show our portfolio of products in an optimum light and thus reach customers from all over Europe, as well as many from overseas, the Middle East and America,” said Christian Massmann, CEO of Eyevis GmbH. A high-grade conference programme revolving around event technology and event management ensures that Prolight + Sound is an important venue for basic and advanced training. With the ‘Theatre and Film Colloquium’, this year’s fair offered a series of events aimed specifically at visitors from the fields of theatre technology and equipment. For this target group, Prolight + Sound offered a new product section – Stagery – that attracted numerous new exhibitors and visitors to Frankfurt and thus expanded the spectrum of segments and themes covered.

review New Concept From 2016: Opening To Private Visitors On All Days And Stronger Trade-Visitors Programmes Messe Frankfurt will also be presenting a new concept for Prolight + Sound. To come into effect next year, the concept orients towards the needs of the entertainment industry. “The new concept focuses equally on strengthening the contact-making process between trade and industry and on completely new contact areas between manufacturers and consumers,” explained Braun. At Prolight + Sound, numerous product extensions in recent years have created a potential for growth that the organisers must make space for. Prolight + Sound will move to the eastern section of the Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre from next year and occupy Halls 1, 3, 4 and 5, as well as the Congress Centre and outdoor exhibition areas. To strengthen the trade-visitor focus of Prolight + Sound, the sequences of days on which the fair will be held will change from 2016. The CDD Series™ By M ar tin Audio www.martin-audio.com Combining distinctive curved enclosures with unique Coaxial Differential Dispersion™ technology, the CDD™ series is designed to deliver class-leading performance, fidelity and coverage consistency to venues that demand the ultimate in cutting-edge technology and style. Whether it’s a bar, an AV installation, a church or a prestige nightclub, the CDD Series has been conceived as a one stop solution; six two-way full-range coaxial systems — from the micro CDD5 to the powerful CDD15, complemented by high-performance subwoofers — cover the majority of install applications. Coaxial Differential Dispersion technology delivers more consistent audience coverage than systems with fixed dispersion X° x Y° hor ns, projecting more output to the rear of the audience to distribute sound evenly from front-to-back, while having wide horizontal coverage close-up. This increased coverage area can reduce the speaker count in larger installations. The visually appealing enclosure design is a signature of the CDD Series. Moulded in rigid UPM Formi — a natural fibre composite that combines stiffness with excellent inter nal damping properties — the curved shape allows each enclosure to be discreetly mounted close to a wall or ceiling. They can also be used in either horizontal or vertical orientation, with rotation of the coaxial driver easily accomplished by removing the screw free, protective grille.

The Me Series Fog Generators By MDG www.mdgfog.com The Me Series has been designed as the next stage in MDG’s evolution of fog generators and comes with a higher degree of controllability and a powerful output from a compact chassis. Me1 is the smallest of the Me family with a single nozzle output that can produce up to 100m3 (3,521 ft3) of fog per minute. It is unique in offering a MAX 3000 configuration setting. Me2 is the powerful twin of the Me1, housed in the same size chassis but with twice the power and a dual output of 200m3 (7,063 ft3) per minute. Me4’s powerful quadruple output produces up to 400m3 (14,126 ft3) of fog per minute and is the ideal generator for applications requiring high quantities of fog. Members of the Me Series benefit from a one per cent to 100 per cent variable fog output, a 100 per cent duty cycle and MDG’s famous Automatic Purging System™ (APS™). Numerous control options are on-board as standard and include 3 standard USITT DMX512 channels, XLR-5 connectors, a four-button LCD user interface and RDM compliancy.

and technologies and were busy receiving customers throughout the exhibition. Mr Josep M. Sans, Market Development Manager for SAE Audio Co Ltd, was amazed with the result. “Last year, our distributor joined the show and was very busy, hence this year we decided to participate and make a better promotion of our brand and new products. People coming to the Audio Brand Name Halls are expecting to find wellestablished brands and high-end products. They can find them all together in the same place. It’s a good way to engage with quality visitors, so yes it’s perfect for us to be here,” said Mr Sans. review Entertainment equipment expert ADJ Group used the show as a product-launching platform in China. Mr Wasl Mo, representative of the company explained: “March to April is an ideal period for sourcing, plus the show is highly recognised in the industry. It becomes our main channel to promote our products to the entertainment and conference sectors. We brought many patented and new products, such as moving head beams, and some of them are newly released in the Chinese market. It’s good to see the buyers’ quality getting better every year.” The fast-expanding Chinese entertainment market has caught the attention of various leading audio and lighting brands. Harman Professional saw the market potential and decided to demonstrate their recent audio and lighting products in KTV room and bar settings at the booth. Ms Vienne Peng, Marketing & Communication Manager (Sales & Advertisement) of the company said: “China’s entertainment sector is a very promising market for us because people are more receptive to international and mid to highend brands. This show can help us access different buyers across the entertainment industry.” First-time exhibitor TJ Media from Korea also shared the same sentiment. “The KTV market in China is growing in a fast pace and the demand for quality KTV products is high. As the show is the most significant industry event in China, it is a great chance to introduce our brand to China, especially to customers from across Southern China,” Mr Pak Sang Min, General Manager of the company commented. Suppliers from the microphone manufacturing industry based in Enping occupied an entire hall at the show and achieved great success in business. The 184 exhibitors in this hall received 2,500 potential orders totalling RMB 1.05 billion over the four-day show. One of the exhibitors, Mr Wu Hong Yun, General Manager of Sandy Audio Equipment Co Ltd said: “This show is very ideal for Enping suppliers to promote their brands to the entire industry. First of all, it is the biggest and most leading one in China, which attracts many Chinese and international buyers. Also, the show’s location in Guangzhou is convenient for Enping companies because we can take our customers to visit our factories after the show. Prolight + Sound Guangzhou is our most effective promotion channel with greatest return on investment.” As the major sourcing hub for the industry, Prolight + Sound Guangzhou attracted more than 60,000 buyers from China and abroad to look for the latest pro audio and lighting products. American buyer Mr Mark Bell from Mark Bell Entertainment Inc found that the stage and event equipment at the show were good value for money. He said: “This is my first time to visit. The show is great and impressive. I found some new potential Chinese suppliers here and the product’s quality is good. I want to buy the tools and equipment here instead of going through the middleman in the United States to save some money. I will come back for sure next year.”

No doubt this is a satisfying sourcing experience.” Mr Zhou Wen Dong from Shenzhen Yingliheng Intelligent Technology Co Ltd was happy to find new products at the show. “Since the show is held during the sourcing season it has become one of the must-go industry occasions for me and my peers. Not only can I see many existing partners but also a wide range of new products from leading brands outside China. I have made a number of contacts with overseas suppliers of mixing consoles and loudspeakers at the Audio Brand Name Hall. This activity has offered a valuable chance to get updates of new technologies and find target products in a timely manner.”

A series of fringe events and live demonstrations were held during the show to meet attendees’ sourcing and networking needs.
