tough questions christians face 2010 national conference Program
dear friend, Welcome to ligonier Ministries’ 23rd annual national conference. We are excited to gather once
We are not Without ansWers to the hard questions of life, for the lord has spoken and has given us a r e v e l at i o n t h at d i r e c t s u s t o t h e o n e W h o h o l d s a l l t h e a n s W e r s.
more with friends from around the world for a few days of fellowship as we look to the teaching of scripture for the renewal of our minds in christ. it is our hope that this conference will be a blessing to you and help equip you for service to our holy god. christians are bombarded with difficult questions every day about scripture, theology, science, and many other topics. as believers in the one, true god we are not without answers to the hard questions of life, for the lord has spoken and has given us a revelation that directs us to the one who holds all the answers. our theme this year—“tough questions christians face”—has been selected to help you find the answers to the hard questions we all face as christians. following a pre-conference seminar on the pressing issue of the role of new media in the church and world today, we will focus on a variety of issues that confront us as believers. our speakers will address the origin of evil and the goodness of god, the inerrancy of scripture, biblical interpretation, the exclusivity of christ, the age of the earth, personal holiness, the lord’s sovereignty, and other issues that are central to christian faith and practice. We trust that these messages will equip you to respond to those in the church and world who are asking such questions, and that they will strengthen your faith. please join me in praying that this conference will help all of us minister more effectively in our particular situations. May the lord bless our time together as we seek to be faithful to him and his Word. in christ,

When i survey the Wondrous cross
36
a Mighty fortress is our god
1. When i survey the wondrous cross
1. a mighty fortress is our god,
3. and though this world, with devils filled,
on which the prince of glory died,
a bulwark never failing;
should threaten to undo us,
My richest gain i count but loss,
our helper he amid the flood
we will not fear, for god hath willed
and pour contempt on all my pride.
of mortal ills prevailing.
his truth to triumph through us.
for still our ancient foe
the prince of darkness grim, we tremble
2. forbid it, lord, that i should boast,
doth seek to work us woe;
not for him;
save in the death of christ my god:
his craft and power are great;
his rage we can endure,
all the vain things that charm me most,
and armed with cruel hate,
for lo! his doom is sure;
i sacrifice them to his blood.
on earth is not his equal.
one little word shall fell him.
3. see, from his head, his hands, his feet,
2. did we in our own strength confide,
4. that Word above all earthly powers,
sorrow and love flow mingled down:
our striving would be losing;
no thanks to them, abideth;
did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
were not the right man on our side,
the spirit and the gifts are ours
or thorns compose so rich a crown?
the man of god’s own choosing.
through him who with us sideth.
dost ask who that may be?
let goods and kindred go,
4. Were the whole realm of nature mine,
christ Jesus, it is he,
this mortal life also;
that were a present far too small;
lord sabaoth his name,
the body they may kill:
love so amazing, so divine,
from age to age the same,
god’s truth abideth still;
demands my soul, my life, my all.
and he must win the battle.
his kingdom is forever.

rock of ages, cleft for Me
coMe thou fount of every Blessing
1. rock of ages, cleft for me,
3. nothing in my hand i bring,
1. come, thou fount of every blessing,
3. o to grace how great a debtor
let me hide myself in thee;
simply to thy cross i cling;
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
daily i’m constrained to be;
let the water and the blood,
naked, come to thee for dress;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
let that grace now, like a fetter,
from thy riven side which flowed,
helpless, look to thee for grace;
call for songs of loudest praise.
bind my wandering heart to thee.
be of sin the double cure,
foul, i to the fountain fly;
teach me some melodious sonnet,
prone to wander lord, i feel it
cleanse me from its guilt and power.
wash me, savior, or i die.
sung by flaming tongues above;
prone to leave the god i love:
praise the mount! i’m fixed upon it,
here’s my heart, o take and seal it,
mount of god’s unchanging love.
seal it for thy courts above.
2. not the labors of my hands
4. While i draw this fleeting breath,
can fulfil thy law’s demands;
when mine eyelids close in death,
could my zeal no respite know,
when i soar to worlds unknown,
2. here i raise my ebenezer;
could my tears forever flow,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
hither by thy help i’m come;
all for sin could not atone;
rock of ages, cleft for me,
and i hope, by thy good pleasure,
thou must save, and thou alone.
let me hide myself in thee.
safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of god: he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.

you saints of the lord,
your pathway shall lie,
i’ll not want;
in presence of my foes;
is laid for your faith in his excellent Word!
my grace, all-sufficient, shall be your supply;
he makes me down to lie
my head thou dost with oil anoint,
What more can he say than to you he has said,
the flame shall not hurt you; i only design
in pastures green; he leadeth me
and my cup overflows.
to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
your dross to consume and your gold to refine.

i’ll strengthen you, help you,
and when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn,

the church’s one foundation
My hope is Built on nothing less
1. the church’s one foundation
4. the church shall never perish
1. My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
is Jesus christ, her lord;
her dear lord to defend,
i dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
she is his new creation by water and the Word:
to guide, sustain, and cherish,
from heaven he came and sought her
is with her to the end;
chorus: on christ, the solid rock, i stand; all other ground is sinking sand,
to be his holy bride;
though there be those that hate her,
all other ground is sinking sand.
with his own blood he bought her,
and false sons in her pale,
and for her life he died.
against or foe or traitor she ever shall prevail.
2. When darkness veils his lovely face, i rest on his unchanging grace; in every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.

2. elect from every nation,
5. ‘Mid toil and tribulation,
yet one o’er all the earth,
and tumult of her war,
3. his oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood;
her charter of salvation one lord,
she waits the consummation
when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay.
one faith, one birth;
of peace forevermore;
one holy name she blesses,
till with the vision glorious
4. When he shall come with trumpet sound, o may i then in him be found;
partakes one holy food,
her longing eyes are blest,
dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.
and to one hope she presses,
and the great church victorious
with every grace endued.
shall be the church at rest.
3. though with a scornful
6. yet she on earth hath union
wonder men see her sore oppressed,
with god the three in one,
by schisms rent asunder,
and mystic sweet communion
by heresies distressed,
with those whose rest is won:
yet saints their watch are keeping,
o happy ones and holy!
their cry goes up, “how long?”
lord, give us grace that we,
and soon the night of weeping
like them, the meek and lowly,
shall be the morn of song.
on high may dwell with thee.

1. holy, holy, holy! lord god almighty! 1. now thank we all our god
3. all praise and thanks to god
early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
with heart and hands and voices,
the father now be given,
holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
who wondrous things hath done,
the son, and him who reigns
god in three persons, blessed trinity!
in whom his world rejoices;
with them in highest heaven
who from our mothers’ arms,
the one eternal god,
2. holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee,
hath blessed us on our way
whom earth and heaven adore;
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
with countless gifts of love,
for thus it was, is now,
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
and still is ours today.
and shall be evermore.
who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
2. o may this bounteous god
3. holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee,
through all our life be near us,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
with ever-joyful hearts
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee
and blessed peace to cheer us;
perfect in power, in love, and purity.
and keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed,
4. holy, holy, holy! lord god almighty!
and free us from all ills
all thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.
in this world and the next.
holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! god in three persons, blessed trinity!
