The Permission to Start Dreaming (PTSD) Foundation, located at 3733 Rosedale Street, Suite 100, in Gig Harbor, Washington, stands as a powerful testament to the resilience and dedication of its founder, Leslie Mayne. This foundation is more than just an organization; it’s a movement committed to providing hope and healing to veterans, first responders and their families.
Leslie, the founding director, began this journey out of a deeply personal tragedy. “In 2009, I became a Gold Star Mother when I lost my oldest son, Kyle, who was a US Army Iraq War veteran, who struggled with post-traumatic stress and a traumatic brain injury,” she shares. “We lost Kyle to the invisible wounds of combat that too many of our nation’s heroes also succumb to. At that time, I knew the trajectory of my life had changed, and my mission was to do whatever I could so that no one who serves this country would have to face what Kyle did. Our service members deserve better.”
The foundation’s flagship event, Race for a Soldier, began in 2011 with an annual 2-mile & 12k running race and Prayer Breakfast aimed at raising awareness of the struggles faced by military veterans and first responders. “The Race for a Soldier was run for all the other Kyles out there to know that we are with them,” Leslie explains. The Prayer Breakfast was a place to provide hope and inspiration through their stories.”
The overwhelming community support led to the incorporation of the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation as a nonprofit in 2013. “We were overwhelmed at how the community came together to support and not only raise funds but to join us in this movement,” Leslie recounts. By 2017, the foundation had expanded its event calendar to include the Swing for a Soldier Golf Tournament and the Pull for a Soldier Trap Shoot Competition, all aimed at providing hope and healing.
Proceeds from these events fund effective programs and resources for veterans and first responders. “About 10 years ago, we learned about the science of post-traumatic growth (PTG), the positive psychological transformation that can happen after trauma, and the Warrior PATH (Progressive and Alternative Training for Helping Heroes) program,” Leslie notes. Today, the foundation operates the only Warrior PATHH program in the Pacific Northwest, offering this transformative program at no cost to participants.
Race for a Soldier distinguishes itself through its mission and the vibrant community spirit, empowerment and motivation it fosters.
“Race For A Soldier is also a powerfully positive day of running & walking where the community comes alongside our military and first responders and shows them they are not alone,” Leslie explains. The event features high-energy music, cheering along the course, and volunteers treating participants like VIPs, creating an atmosphere of support and connection.
For Leslie and the foundation, the most rewarding aspect of their work is the community support, which is evident during their annual Prayer Breakfast and Race Weekend. “Each year, when we hold our Prayer Breakfast and Race Weekend – always the first weekend in September – we are overwhelmed by the turnout and encouragement we receive,” Leslie says. The involvement of local military, law enforcement, and firefighters underscores the region’s strong commitment to all those who serve our country and communities.
The foundation’s success is attributed to Leslie and a small group of dedicated allies who believed they could make a difference. According to Race Director Jeff Bauknecht, “The community of sponsors, volunteers and participants who have devoted financial, time, and other personal resources to establish and strengthen the foundation’s events are directly responsible for the impact on those we serve,” The foundation’s programs, particularly Warrior PATHH, are considered the gold standard in post-traumatic growth, emphasizing the importance of turning adversity into positive psychological change.
Leslie has lived in Gig Harbor since the mid-1990s, returning as a single mother of four to raise her family. “This is a very welcoming community – local businesses and organizations regularly support our events,” she says. The foundation’s board members are also deeply embedded in the local community, contributing to its vibrancy.
Leslie invites everyone to join the movement. “Come and join us. Stand in the gap with us. Wrap your arms around those who serve and let them know they ARE NOT ALONE,” she urges. “Whether individuals participate, volunteer in our events, or partner with us as sponsors, our overriding objective is to show our military and first responders that they are not alone.”

Puget Sound Revels celebrates the act of community through their programming, reveling through production art all year long!
Puget Sound Revels honors every person’s presence and gifts, celebrates past and present communities, and dances in unity with joy through song. This year the Revels have a full year of activities and productions, both on the stage and in Tacoma, that are sure to enthrall audiences young and old. The new Revels stage director, Michelle Matlock, will be heading up the vision of this year’s productions, celebrations and opportunities for education to facilitate “coming together with joy.”
This year the Puget Sound Revels is hosting their annual production of the Midwinter Revels, a show meant to intentionally blend amateurs and professionals, children and adults, players and audience in an overall experience of singing, dancing and story. The production is held at Tacoma’s Rialto Theater and draws audiences from all over the Pacific Northwest. Each year the production tells a story from a different time and place. The production often includes several Revels Rituals regardless of the setting (more info on the rituals at Revels.org). However, the Midwinter Revels production isn’t the only “revel” brewing this year! If you like singing, dancing and sunshine (who doesn’t?), then this summer there is sure to be something for you. May 1 the Revels welcomed Lovely May with a free May Day celebration in Wright Park. The community was invited to traditional activities such as dancing around the maypole, flower crowns and singing.
June 2, the Revels have a benefit concert at Titlow Lodge with lively tunes played by Podorythmie & the Legers. “The rustic lodge, with its beautiful park and water views, will be bursting with music and joy — Revels invite all to attend, enjoy the music and support their mission!” says Michelle. On June 21, the Revels will host another free community event at Wapato Park, marking the longest day with song and story.
Later this summer, July 29 to August 3, Revels will host an exclusive and exciting workshop series called Mummers & Musicians, culminating in a spectacular performance. This is a great opportunity for people who love theater, music and tomfoolery! Workshops are open to the public, and information for registration can be found on their website.

In April 2024, just in time for the spring and summer months, a new park opened up in Tacoma, and it’s a site to be seen and experienced.
“The design of Melanie’s Park is inspired by its history, both as the traditional homeland of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians and as a heating plant during a century of industrial use,” explains Kristi Evans, Capital Program ManagerCommunity & Neighborhood Parks for Metro Parks Tacoma.
The play area, inspired by Northwest themes and history, features a winding metal slide descending from a climbing tower that evokes a 200-foot smokestack once located on the site in the early 1900s. Additionally, a log jam play area pays homage to the past. To honor the tribal heritage, interpretive signs provide information about the Tribe’s historical and ongoing presence on the waterfront, including Lushootseed words with their pronunciations and the importance of the local Fishing Wars in upholding treaty rights. The park’s concrete walkways are adorned with Coast Salish basket weaving designs by the mother-daughter duo Denise Reed and Sharron Nelson. These designs — passed down through generations—symbolize their tribal history and cherished elements such as mountains, ocean, canoes, animals, family, and gathering plants.
CLEAN CALM CONSTANT
“The most unique feature of this park is the 36-foot climbing tower and 23-foot slide,” notes Kristi. “Kids — and adults — are clamoring to try it out and can’t get enough! It’s also the only park with play structures close to downtown Tacoma and on the Thea Foss Waterway.”
According to Kristi, the three-quarter-acre park is named after Melanie LaPlant Dressel, a community and banking leader who helped found Columbia Bank and held the top job there until her death in 2017. She earned a reputation as a savvy businesswoman, held positions on multiple community boards, and was known for her kind heart and fondness for children.
Though there is no designated parking for Melanie’s Park, it is situated within walking distance of many public parking lots. In addition, there is an ADA-accessible street parking space in front of the park. The park was built to ADA accessibility standards, which includes pathways around the park, the pedestrian bridge and viewing areas. There are several trees on-site, picnicking and viewing areas, restrooms, and a pavilion that can be rented for small parties and events.
When asked what she hopes visitors to the park will take away from their experience, Kristi shares, “We always hope our visitors have fun and build memories — which is easy to do with a 50-foot pedestrian bridge and viewing platform with expansive views of downtown, Mount Rainier and a marina. It’s the perfect place to sit on a boardwalk, relax among native plants and listen to children laugh. We also hope they [walk away with] a better understanding of the site’s history and the remarkable cleanup that was completed in 2006 after the Environmental Protection Agency declared it a Superfund site.”
In 1983, after a century of industrial use, the Environmental Protection Agency declared a 12-acre stretch of Commencement Bay a Superfund site and ordered a cleanup. The City of Tacoma teamed up with those responsible for dumping waste into the waterway and embarked on the massive cleanup. Officials then envisioned a vibrant walkway that could help redevelop the area, bringing parks, businesses, restaurants and apartment buildings to the waterfront.
Foss Waterway Development Authority started the fundraising for Melanie’s Park — which includes $1.2 million in private donations, $750,000 from the City of Tacoma, $490,000 from Washington state and $50,000 from Pierce County. Metro Parks contributed $2.2 million in voter-approved bonds.

The 38th annual Summer Art Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever!

In an exciting development for the Gig Harbor Peninsula, the Peninsula Art League (PAL) and PenMet Parks have forged a partnership aimed at enhancing recreational and artistic opportunities for the community. This collaboration seeks to blend the beauty of nature with the creativity of art, fostering a vibrant cultural scene while providing enriching experiences for residents and visitors alike.
Ally Bujacich, executive director of PenMet Parks, emphasized the importance of meeting the community's evolving needs by expanding park and recreation offerings, including greater access to art. The alliance with PAL signifies a shared commitment to enriching the lives of residents through art education and engagement.
Peninsula Art League president Colette Smith expressed enthusiasm about partnering with PenMet Parks, recognizing the organization as a vital community asset. “Peninsula Art League is very pleased to collaborate with such a strong community partner to increase opportunities for our community to gather, play and create,” she shares. This collaboration aims to broaden the scope of its art-related activities, offering workshops, events and volunteer opportunities to nurture creativity and foster community connections.
One of the most exciting outcomes of this partnership is the relocation of the annual Summer Art Festival to Sehmel Homestead Park, reflecting the growing scope and popularity of the event. This move to a larger venue enables the festival to accommodate more artists, vendors and attendees, promising an even more vibrant and engaging experience for all.
Scheduled for 10am to 6pm Saturday, July 20, and 10am to 5pm Sunday, July 21, the festival will feature more than 100 artists (featuring paintings, woodwork, pottery, jewelry, fabrics and more!). Enjoy the best of local beer by Gig Harbor Brewing and 7 Seas Brewing in the festival's beer garden and a variety of food vendors including Kettle Korn, Millville Pizza, BBQ2U, Kona Ice, Pink Gorilla and Harbor Haute Dogs. Live entertainment adds to the festive atmosphere with DJ Ice Mike playing a variety of genres, and young live musicians performing during his breaks. There will be a variety of children’s activities like face painting, chalk art, make and take, and glitter tattoos. With an anticipated attendance surpassing last year's 12,000 visitors, the festival promises to be a highlight of the summer calendar, attracting art enthusiasts and families alike.
The appeal of the Summer Art Festival lies not only in its diverse offerings but also in its role as a unifying force within the community — bringing art to the community and fostering connections among artists and residents. Free to all, the festival serves as a celebration of creativity and community spirit, drawing people together in a shared appreciation of art and culture. Proceeds benefit high school scholarships. This year's festival will further its impact by partnering with the Kiwanis Club of Gig Harbor to collect non-perishable food donations for local food banks.

FRESH TOMATO BASIL Bruschetta
Ingredients
• 6 - 8 ripe Roma tomatoes, diced
• 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, finely chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 1 French baguette, sliced
• 1/4 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
Method
1. Prepare the Tomato Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the diced tomatoes, chopped basil, and minced garlic. Drizzle with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and let sit for about 15 to 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
2. Toast the Baguette Slices: Preheat your oven to 400°F. Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven for about 5 to 7 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crisp.
3. Assemble the Bruschetta: Spoon the tomato mixture onto each toasted baguette slice. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
4. Serve: Arrange the bruschetta on a serving platter. Serve immediately and enjoy this refreshing summer appetizer!
