Carefully Consider Social Security Decisions
our Social Security benefits can be an important part of your retirement income — but when should you start collecting them? It’s a big decision, so you’ll want to consider your
Essentially, you’ll need to decide whether you’re going to take your benefits as early as possible — age 62 — or if you should wait until your “full retirement age” or even longer. If you begin accepting benefits at 62, they’ll be about 30% lower than if you waited until your full retirement age, which is 67 if you were born in 1960 or later. And if you wait until 70, your benefits will be about 24% higher than at your full retirement age.
In deciding when to claim benefits, you’ll want to weigh these factors:
Income needs — If you need the money to help meet your daily cost of living, then you may not feel you have much of a choice about when to take Social Security. However, if you have sufficient income from other sources, such as your 401(k) or other retirement accounts, you may be able to delay taking benefits until they’re much larger.
Employment — If you’re still working and you haven’t reached your full retirement age yet, it might be a good idea to wait before claiming Social Security because your benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $2 earned above $23,400. In the year in which you reach your full retirement age, your benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $3 earned above $62,160. (But once you reach your full retirement age, Social Security will adjust your payments to credit you for the months during which your benefits were lowered because of your income.)
Life expectancy — None of us can say for certain how long we’ll live — but you may have some hints. For example, if you have a family history of longevity and you’re in good health, you might decide it makes sense to delay taking Social Security until your full retirement age, or even later, as you could potentially have more years of receiving larger checks.
Spouse — If you’re married, decisions about when to claim benefits could affect you or your spouse. The spouse with lower Social Security payments may be eligible to receive spousal benefits, which, when combined with their own benefits, can reach up to 50% of the higherbenefit spouse’s payment at their full retirement age. To qualify, the lower-benefit spouse’s benefit at their full retirement age must be less than half of the other spouse’s full retirement-age benefit. However, if the lower-benefit spouse claims their benefits before their full retirement age, their own retirement benefit and the spousal benefit will be reduced. Also, the lower-benefit spouse reaches their maximum benefit amount at their full retirement age — they won’t receive additional benefits even if they or the higherbenefit spouse delays taking benefits past their respective full retirement ages.
Another point to keep in mind: If the higherbenefit spouse claims early, the survivor benefit to the other spouse is reduced, but if the higherbenefit spouse delays their benefit beyond their full retirement age, the survivor benefit is increased.
By making the appropriate choices, you can help maximize your Social Security benefits — and possibly enjoy a more comfortable retirement.

As the owner of VIP Plumbing, Joe Zavala has built a reputation as the go-to problem solver when plumbing emergencies strike. His commitment to excellence and connection to the Sandpoint community has set his business apart and earned him the title of Best of Sandpoint 2024 as a plumbing company. With over 20 years of experience in the plumbing industry, Joe’s dedication extends beyond providing reliable services—he’s passionate about training a trusted team to carry on the quality of work his clients have come to expect. Week after week, Joe and his team help community members address plumbing challenges with skill, professionalism, and heart.
Q: Please provide a brief history of VIP Plumbing and your professional experience. How long have you been in business, and how did the business get started?
A: The history of VIP Plumbing is only two years in the making, but I started plumbing here 20 years ago. When we moved to the Sandpoint area from Redlands, CA, where I worked at the local lumber mill, my career started in new construction for North Star Plumbing in Sagle, ID. I also worked for Aqua Plumbing in Sandpoint, where I learned everything about service. I now have six years of new construction experience and 14 years of service in plumbing. After years of learning and honing my skills, starting my own company, VIP Plumbing, was the natural next step for me.
Q: How has VIP Plumbing grown as a business and as part of the Sandpoint community?
A: It takes many years to build a plumbing company. Every person I hire for my company has to spend four years completing trade school before they can be on their own in one of our trucks. Even after that, they continue honing their skills to succeed. My lead plumber, Jada South, is a perfect example of this commitment. She is dedicated to learning everything I know and will eventually take over the reins.
VIP Plumbing has grown because the town knows me and understands my team’s dedication to quality. People know that when they call us, they get reliable service from a team that cares. Whether it’s a routine repair or an emergency, the trust we’ve built in the community has been a big part of our success. When you choose VIP Plumbing, you choose a team that takes pride in doing the job right.
"
AFTER YEARS OF LEARNING AND HONING MY SKILLS, STARTING MY OWN COMPANY, VIP PLUMBING, WAS THE NATURAL NEXT STEP FOR ME.
Q: What is your vision for your business moving forward? What does VIP Plumbing have planned for 2025 and beyond?
A: In 2025, I plan to keep moving forward, doing more of what I’m skilled at: handling emergency after emergency with my team at VIP Plumbing. I’m not looking to expand in ways that would take away from our core services. I want to focus on what we do best and continue building a team that shares my commitment to quality.
Q: What is your favorite part about being a part of the local business community in Sandpoint? What is most rewarding to you about the work you do?
A: The most rewarding part of my work with VIP Plumbing is the ability to solve problems for my clients that no one else can. I enjoy taking on the challenges that stump others.
As a local business owner, I enjoy being part of a community where everyone knows each other. Sandpoint is special because it feels like a big family, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers that is not mentioned above?
A: I’d like to thank the people of Sandpoint for helping me become the plumber I am today. Thank you for your trust and support. I will continue to train the high-quality plumbers we need to serve this community best.

BONNER GENERAL’S 17TH ANNUAL Heart Ball
TRANSITIONING THROUGH SEASONS OF CARE
by ANGEL DWYER
F ebruary can be a conflicting time of year for Sandpoint residents. There may be snow on the ground in town, with lights still adorning the trees along 1st Avenue and Cedar Street, prolonging the beauty of winter wonderment for as long as possible. Or, early spring rainfall may wash away the last of it, leaving a dreary, sloshy mess of snowmelt to trudge through. Grey skies overshadow each mountaintop in the distance, while muddy boots sit by the front door, threatening to overstay their welcome until June. With disappointment, some long for an extended winter, or at the very least, a few months more of spring skiing on Schweitzer. Either way, inevitably, the temperatures rise, and the ground is soaked in liquid memories from the hills around us. February slugs along, and amidst the somber colors and dampness, we all feel the swing of seasons approaching and the potential of change imminent.
A time of transition can bring unwelcome feelings of uncertainty and anxiety, and when it involves immediate medical needs and the necessary, long-term follow-up care, such change is life-altering. This February, Bonner General Health is focusing its eyes on the transitional care of its patients with its upcoming fundraiser, the 17th Annual Heart Ball. In addition to raising money for a new program, they will present their first Legacy Donor award to long-time philanthropists Georgia and Howard Simmons for their continuous support of the hospital throughout the years. The Heart Ball is organized by a team of ten dedicated community members through the Bonner General Health Foundation and many more behind the scenes. Their mission is simple: to enhance the sustainability of Bonner General Health through financial support and by fostering community relations. Each Foundation board member is uniquely motivated to help support hospital services in our small town. In their own words, “We are your friends, neighbors, health providers, and community of concerned citizens who pursue a vision for our community’s future.” Some of them began right here at home when they were born within Bonner General’s now-retired OB unit, while others have relocated to Sandpoint from afar. Whether they have been patients receiving hospital services, know someone close to them who has, or they themselves have been such a provider, the common thread throughout the Foundation is this: they have a heart for Sandpoint and the surrounding counties receiving quality, compassionate medical care.
Over the last seventeen years, the Heart Ball has funded everything from pediatric to emergency services, multiple remodeling projects, the Ear, Nose, and Throat program, and countless necessary pieces of medical equipment for various departments. This year, the financial vision is to fund a local Swing-Bed program, a rural hospital initiative that has grassroots that dates back to the 70s, first implemented by a physician from Utah, Dr. Bruce Walter. In the 1970s, rural hospitals in the United States experienced difficulties providing seamless transitional service from initial acute care through rehabilitative follow-up. While larger hospitals in more urban areas had an abundance of resources and services available in-house, rural hospitals struggled to meet their patients' evergrowing needs, including post-acute care. With limited healthcare services available across rural America, patients often faced difficulty accessing or affording follow-up care after being released from hospitals. After a patient came home, the burden of rehabilitative care fell to those in their immediate family if they had them. Accomplishing things that may have once seemed easy pre-hospitalization, such as day-to-day living tasks, transportation to and from appointments, and medication management, fell into the patient’s lap to navigate during recovery from surgery, injury or other procedures. Meanwhile, rural hospital beds were left empty, as acute care was short-lived, and insurance providers didn’t cover further care in-house.
To address this difficult gap, Dr. Bruce Walter presented his innovative solution, the Swing-Bed program, and legislation passed in 1976 to enact it throughout small Critical Access Hospitals nationwide. This allowed rural hospitals to use the same beds that patients were already using for acute care for extended, rehabilitative follow-up care in the same facility, as well as bill insurance companies separately since the services provided were different. So, not only did it help patients, but it also helped rural hospitals stay funded. The Swing-Bed program allows otherwise unused beds to stay filled for longer periods, increasing steady revenue and using already available resources to their full potential. With that said, the primary purpose wasn’t intended to be a money stream for hospitals; it was just collateral benefit. In later publications, Dr. Walter spoke of his revolutionary program: "Such a program nationwide should not be measured merely in terms of balance sheets and occupancy percentages, but also in terms of personal benefits gained by patients and
We often take for granted how lucky we are we need in our small town.
TO RECEIVE THE CARE
their families.” In the end, the purpose was caring for patients well, a motive that aligns perfectly with Bonner General’s mission.
Dr. Stacey Good, Chief Medical Officer at Bonner General, says, “The biggest advantage to a Swing-Bed program is the continuity of care. For example, when a patient is admitted for a stroke, hip fracture, or prolonged illness that requires some aspect of rehab, the individual can stay in the same room they were admitted in originally. The same staff will be involved in their rehab process. They know the patient's medical history and their family. There is more intimate and individualized care that one just doesn't get at bigger facilities. It also keeps our community members in our community. Due to the huge need for rehabilitation beds, patients are often sent not just to Coeur d'Alene, but to Post Falls or Spokane because of the long wait lists for beds locally.”
The Swing-Bed program can be utilized in multiple ways. Kate McAlister, representative of the Foundation, states, “The SwingBed Program includes board-certified physicians, highly qualified nurses, dietitians, social workers, clinically trained pharmacists, and a full spectrum of rehabilitative services teams.” This includes services such as physical, speech, and occupational therapy, IV therapy, in-house imaging and pharmacy access, and 24-hour access to skilled nursing staff. The wealth of in-house services further ensures a patient’s complete recovery before being released back home. Because of the wide breadth of services, a Swing-Bed program can encompass, it can apply to a variety of situations, such as patients recovering from COVID-19, orthopedic surgeries such as joint replacement, patients recovering from strokes, those who receive IV therapy and wound care services, and many more.
The dedicated teams of medical professionals at Bonner General and their connected clinics are invaluable to our community. Their vision to integrate Swing-Beds into our hospital, creating continuity of care from the beginning of need to full recovery, embodies their mission and vision, “to improve health, inspire wellness and save lives,” and “to be known for excellent, personal care that makes Bonner General Health the first choice for the health care needs of our community.” Tom Lawrence, MD, a Foundation board member and local physician for over 40 years, states, “After treating so many patients at Bonner General Health over the years, it is wonderful to witness how much the community members care about their hometown hospital...We often take for granted how lucky we are to receive the care we need in our small town.” Bonner General Health is our county's only Critical Access Hospital. Many locals were born here, and countless residents and travelers have walked through its doors seeking compassionate medical assistance. The Swing-Bed program has shown itself throughout the last five decades to be essential and effective in rural healthcare. It is a vital service our community needs.
The 17th Annual Heart Ball will be held at the Bonner County Fairgrounds on February 22nd, from 5 to 11pm, and tickets can be purchased by visiting the hospital's website at BonnerGeneralHealth. org. This year's event theme is a masquerade ball, and it is fittingly so, as historically, African cultures have engaged in masquerades to represent important transitions through the cycle of life. From beginning to end, just as the seasons around us are changing, so too is the future of our local healthcare services. Each of us can play an integral role in shaping it for our community and future generations.

SUSTAINABLE LIVING Made Simple
Eco-friendly habits for a comfortable home
by
There’s no need to give up comfort or elegance to be sustainable. Habits that can make your home eco-friendly are can easily integrate into your lifestyle and allow you to make a difference in a healthier world, while still enjoying the things you love. If you've decided to make your life greener, you can start small by following these suggestions to transform your home into an eco-friendly haven.
Indoors: Creating a Sustainable Sanctuary
Energy-efficient lighting
It’s a simple but powerful change to replace bulbs with LED lights. They consume far less energy than the standard incandescent bulbs and last far longer. Consider smart lighting solutions to conserve energy while remotely managing brightness and on/off schedules. The savings on your electricity bill will surprise you and cut your carbon footprint.
Natural cleaning solutions
Even the most traditional cleaning solutions contain toxic chemicals that harm the environment and your body. Instead, opt for homemade ones, using effective everyday ingredients such as vinegar, baking soda, and lemon. These natural treatments work, are affordable and are safe for your family and pets. Try using essential oils for an additional scent-enhancing benefit that is free from artificial ingredients.
LOOK FOR PIECES THAT ARE RECYCLED
OR MADE FROM SUSTAINABLE WOOD.
Green furniture choices
Furnishing your home sustainably can make a huge impact. Look for pieces that are recycled or made from sustainable wood, emphasizing brands with ethical manufacturing practices over cheap furniture likely to end up in a landfill. You can even upcycle furniture that you already have to save money and create a statement piece.
Low-impact laundry
Your washing machine is another place to go green. Wash in cold water whenever possible to conserve energy and prolong the life of your clothes. Buy a clothesline or drying rack to save money by reducing the usage of your dryer, which is quite an electricity drain. Consider using eco-friendly detergents that are biodegradable and do not contain harsh chemicals.
Water conservation indoors
You can make simple changes to your routine to reduce your water use. For example, installing low-flow faucets and showerheads to save water without sacrificing efficiency. You can also repair leaky faucets to avoid unnecessary waste. Water harvested from dehumidifiers or rainwater can also be a green way to water indoor plants.
Outdoors: Building an Eco-friendly Oasis
Native landscaping
Design your yard with local plants that are easier to maintain and don’t use as much water. The native species thrive in their native environments and are a source of food for pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Choose species like clover, wildflowers, or drought-tolerant groundcovers to avoid a thirsty lawn.
Composting corner
Composting allows you to reuse kitchen and yard waste and develop nutrient-dense soil for your garden. A small compost bin in a dark corner can handle everything from vegetable peels to coffee grounds. Use the compost that forms to feed your plants.
Solar-powered solutions
It’s easier than ever to harness the sun's energy through solar panels or small-scale solar modules. Solar-powered outdoor lighting keeps your walkways bright without power. Solar water heaters and gardening tool batteries are other convenient, eco-friendly options.
Sustainable outdoor structures
If you plan to add a deck or patio to your outdoor space, choose green alternatives such as reclaimed wood, recycled composite decking, or bamboo. They are long-lasting, stylish,
Supporting local farmers, artisans, and retailers strengthens the local economy.
and less reliant on raw materials. Incorporating shaded areas with pergolas or trellises covered in climbing plants can also minimize heat in outdoor living spaces.
Simple Steps for Everyday Sustainability
Reduce, reuse, recycle
Recycling has been a part of sustainable lifestyles for many years, but so has reducing and reusing. Instead of single-use plastic, use non-reusable plastics such as cloth grocery bags, stainless steel water bottles, and beeswax food wraps—shop in bulk to save on packaging and buy from businesses that use biodegradable or compostable materials.
Mindful consumption
Try to stay mindful and minimize over-consumption when shopping. Before making a purchase, consider if there's a more lasting or eco-friendly alternative to the item. Choosing well can help minimize waste and save you more money in the long run.
Community Connections: Expanding Your Impact
Shop locally
Supporting local farmers, artisans, and retailers strengthens the local economy. It reduces the carbon footprint associated with shipping goods over long distances. Go to farmer’s markets for seasonal produce and shop locally whenever possible.
Share and swap
Join or start a tool, equipment, and household items-sharing group in your local community. Lending things that aren’t regularly used, such as power tools or special kitchen utensils, saves you on extra waste. Clothing swaps and secondhand stores are also fantastic places to update your wardrobe sustainably.
Educational outreach
Share your experiences with others to help support them in their journey to sustainability. Offer a composting workshop, set up a website or blog sharing eco-friendly tips, or simply advocate for sustainability as a role model to those around you. The more people involved, the greater the impact.
By making these green changes to your home, you can lead a greener lifestyle for your family and for the planet. Every small step can help create a huge difference, and every move toward a greener lifestyle can help create a healthier future for all.

FIRST-TIME HOMEOWNERSHIP IN SANDPOINT
Essential steps to secure your dream home
by LIKE MEDIA TEAM
Owning your first home is an exciting experience. The town of Sandpoint in Idaho — where the mountain scenery meets a warm and inviting community — can be a special place to call home. The home-buying process can be overwhelming if you don’t have a map to guide you. First-time homebuyers can avoid mistakes and land the ideal house by being prepared. We’ve put together a breakdown of recommended steps you should take now to realize your homeownership goals.
1. Assess Your Financial Readiness
Step one in the process of home-buying is determining your financial situation. Find out how much house you can afford based on your current income, expenses, and debt. Generally, banks and lenders don’t want your mortgage payment, including taxes and insurance, to exceed 28% of your gross monthly income. Also, getting a good credit score from the start is critical. The higher the credit score, the better the interest rate and the loan options you can get. If you want your credit to improve, do your best to correct the errors or outstanding debt.
2. Set Aside for Down Payment and Closing Costs
Some loans offer down payment assistance, but most still require 3%– 20% of the home's purchase price. In addition to the down payment, homebuyers must save money for closing costs, typically 2% to 5% of the loan amount. An automatic savings plan can make saving easier. Whether it's a lakefront home or a craftsman in town, you must be ready to compete in Sandpoint's market.
Luxury Properties, SIGNATURE SERVICE
PROCESS
My process is firmly rooted in high-level problem-solving, negotiation, transparency, a hyper-focused approach that prioritizes my clients’ desires, and the immaculate execution of real estate transactions.
RELATIONSHIPS
My husband and business partner, Greg, constantly reminds me that I’m a people person first. He’s right. That’s the primary reason I’m in real estate — to help people. My clients definitely feel like they can be in a friendly, professional relationship with me throughout the process of buying or selling a home, which typically extends way past the closing date.
BRAND
Tomlinson Sotheby’s International Realty is backed by the Sotheby’s brand, a nearly 300-year tradition that stands for trust, integrity and excellence. As a Sotheby’s Realty affiliate, TSIR is able to offer our clients abundant top-shelf marketing materials and exposure in toptier media outlets.
CONCIERGE SERVICE
My clientele maintains a certain level of expectation when it comes to service, and that is what I provide. That is directly aligned with Tomlinson Sotheby's tradition of excellence. "Exceeding expectations. Solving problems before they happen." I have built, and continue to build, my business on these things.
Shannon Schulz
3. Get Pre-Approved for a Mortgage
Getting pre-approved for a mortgage is a key first step. The mortgage preapproval shows buyers what you can afford and lets them know you’re a serious buyer. Consult an experienced lender who will walk you through the various loan programs (VA, FHA, USDA, traditional). Pre-approval also helps secure an interest rate for a specified period to help you protect yourself if interest rates rise while you’re searching for a home.
4. Know What You’re Looking For in a Home
Before jumping into the housing market, list your "must-haves" and "nice-to-haves." Think of the distance to schools or work, the square footage, the bedrooms, and the yard. Sandpoint homes come in a wide range of designs, from townhouses to lakeside residences. You can focus your search by knowing what you want and need so that you’re not sidetracked by houses that aren’t on your radar.
5. Partner with a Knowledgeable Local Real Estate Agent
You will always want a local real estate agent familiar with the Sandpoint area. They’ll let you know the market trends, prices, and upcoming properties before release. An experienced agent will also negotiate for you to receive the most reasonable price and conditions.
6. Research First-Time Home Buyer Programs
Take advantage of Idaho’s first-time home buyer assistance programs. Options like the Idaho Housing and Finance Association’s down payment assistance can help make homeownership more accessible. These programs often have income and credit requirements, so reviewing your eligibility early is important.
7. Prepare for the Offer and Closing Process
When you finally have the house of your dreams, you are ready to make an offer. Your agent will help you formulate an attractive offer based on market data, comparable sales, and buyer expectations. When the seller agrees to your offer, the process of closing begins. These include home inspections, appraisals, and closing your loan. Be prepared to provide documents promptly to avoid delays.
Sandpoint real estate is an incredible opportunity for a first-time homeowner to settle in one of Idaho’s most beautiful places. When you take these steps and hire reputable professionals, you can quickly move through the home-buying process and find a house that’s perfect for you. If you're considering taking the leap, it is time to make sure you’re financially prepared, learn more about program offerings, and reach out to a local Sandpoint real estate professional who knows the Sandpoint market inside and out. Your first home is not just an investment but a place where memories are made and futures are built.
MARKET REPORT
Sandpoint Housing Market: Balancing Demand and Trends
The Sandpoint real estate market remains dynamic, with steady demand driven by its scenic beauty and desirable lifestyle. Home prices have shown moderate growth, reflecting limited inventory and sustained buyer interest. Single-family homes remain the most sought-after property type, particularly those near the water or with mountain views. Supply is constrained, with new listings selling quickly, often at or near asking prices. However, higher interest rates have tempered the market slightly, leading to a more balanced environment. Buyers have more negotiation power than last year, but sellers with updated properties continue to see strong offers.

WHITEFISH AND WINTER: LAKE PEND OREILLE’S LEGACY
ICE FISHING’S IMPACT ON FAMILIES AND INDUSTRY
The Stockman family showed off their haul of whitefish in this 1920 ice fishing photo. Note that the heater is necessary to keep the fingertips warm.
More common on Cocolalla Lake these days, ice fishing was a major industry on Lake Pend Oreille around 1910. Before the Albeni Dam, the lake levels fluctuated much more, and therefore, the lake froze over more often. One year, the lake froze from Sandpoint to Hope. Newspaper accounts noted “a large village of whitefish shacks on ice ten inches thick. Locals commented, “Good smoking are these critters.”
The whitefish industry provided good eating and revenue for individuals and fishmongers. In its heyday, shipped by rail, whitefish sales brought in $40K, or $600K in today’s dollars. However, by 1930, overfishing had caused a collapse of the industry.
Ice fishing, especially around Bottle Bay, kept many families alive, both in terms of food and money. During mild winters, flotillas of boats angled for their “critters.” Locals knew to keep their hooks about a foot off the bottom.
