Financial considerations when changing jobs

re you changing jobs soon? If so, you’ll obviously be interested in your new salary, but you’ll also want to look at other

•401(k) — If you had a 401(k) plan through your previous employer, you’ll need to decide what to do with it once you’ve joined a new employer. You could just cash it out, but you’d pay taxes and possible penalties. You could leave your 401(k) with your previous employer, if allowed, and if you have been happy with your plan’s performance. Or you could move your 401(k) into your new employer’s plan, which might be a good choice if the new plan has lower fees and attractive investment options. You’d also want to ask whether the new employer offers matching contributions. Finally, you could roll over your old 401(k) into a traditional IRA, which would give you more investment choices.

•HSA/FSA — If your new employer offers a health savings account (HSA) as part of a highdeductible health plan, you may want to take advantage of it. Your contributions are made with pre-tax dollars, your earnings generally grow tax deferred and your withdrawals are tax free, as long as they’re used for qualified medical expenses. Plus, you can carry unused funds through retirement, when you can still use them for qualified medical expenses. Your employer might also offer a flexible spending account (FSA), which can pay for a variety of health care costs, such as deductibles, co-payments and coinsurance. Generally, if you’re contributing to an HSA, you can’t fund an FSA in the same year, except for a limited purpose FSA.

• Waiting period for health benefits — You’ll want to ask your new employer if there’s a

waiting eligibility period to enroll in its benefits plan — health insurance, dental, vision, and so on. If so, you may need to get COBRA coverage for a few months to stay in your old plan, unless you can be added to a spouse’s plan. When you go on your new employer’s health care plan, make sure you know what it covers. Depending on your situation, you might want to add supplemental health insurance.

•Life insurance — When you leave a job, your employer-sponsored life insurance will end, unless you have the option to convert your group term life policy into an individual permanent cash value policy. So, you’ll want to be sure your new employer offers at least the same insurance coverage as your old one. But you should also determine whether the group policy offered by your employer is sufficient for your needs. Depending on several factors, such as your income, spouse’s income and family size, you may need to supplement your employer’s policy with an individual term life insurance policy.

•Other benefits — Review your new employer’s benefits package carefully to see what’s available. Many employers offer tuition reimbursement for their employees, and some even provide college planning assistance for employees’ children. For example, your employer might offer matching contributions to a taxadvantaged 529 education saving plan, which can be used for college, some K-12 expenses and some trade/vocational school programs.

Changing jobs can provide you with an opportunity to expand your career, learn new skills and broaden your social network. And it can certainly be financially rewarding, too — so make sure you know all the benefits involved.

Q&A WITH KANIKSU COMMUNITY HEALTH

COMMITTED TO QUALITY, AFFORDABLE, AND ACCESSIBLE CARE

Imagine integrated healthcare that treats people, not symptoms — that’s whole health. Now, imagine that same integrated care through all phases of your life. That’s whole health, for your whole life. That’s Kaniksu Community Health.

Q.Please share a bit about the services provided by Kanisku Community Health.

A. Kaniksu Community Health (KCH) is committed to providing quality, affordable and accessible care for the communities it serves by providing integrated health services encompassing pediatrics, family medicine, dental, behavioral health, women’s health, and much more, delivered by patient-focused providers who work to break down barriers to care. Ranked in the top 1% of community health centers in the nation, and with locations in Sandpoint, Bonners Ferry, and Priest River, KCH continues to make a meaningful difference in lives across the community.

Regardless of how you pay, or the complexity of your condition, we will help you find solutions. We serve everyone in Bonner and Boundary counties, whether you are covered by Medicare or Medicaid, have private insurance, are a self-pay patient, or you’re one of our country’s veterans. If there are any concerns about how you can pay for services, talk to us. We’re here to help.

The healthcare landscape is a tough one to navigate, and a big part of what we do is untangle that mess to make it accessible, affordable, and achievable.

Q.Please share the history behind Kaniksu Community Health. How did KCH come to be, and how has it grown in recent years?

A. In 2002, a big dream was brought to life: to deliver quality healthcare to every person in North Idaho, regardless of their circumstances. Over the past 19 years, our commitment to this idea has inspired us to expand our services to include dental, behavioral health, and pediatric care across multiple clinic locations.

We’ve extended our hours to better meet our patients’ needs, partnered with local school districts to offer behavioral health services to kids in need, and added patient assistance and an in-house pharmacy to make sure there were no barriers to patient care. We have continued to invest in wellness, collaboration, and compassion by delivering the highest level of care by extraordinary staff through excellent patient experiences.

Q.What do you want the community to know about integrated health? Why is it so important to offer to our community?

A. Integrated healthcare delivers comprehensive long-term care designed to meet patients’ multidimensional needs. Integrated care models are made up of coordinated care from a team of healthcare professionals – including family medicine, pediatric, behavioral, and dental healthcare providers. Rather than keeping these services separate, KCH providers work together to address healthcare needs, addressing each issue holistically and looking at long-term care solutions that can positively impact your health and overall quality of life.

Q.Please describe the pediatric services. How does it contribute to Kaniksu’s ability to serve the community?

A. There is nothing more important than the health and well-being of our children. KCH’s board-certified pediatricians provide specialized, quality, and compassionate care and coordinate multiple aspects of each child’s well-being, ensuring they receive comprehensive care in one place. In addition to caring for your children when they become sick, KCH is also dedicated to keeping them healthy, active, and out of the hospital. We recognize the importance of good health for a growing child, and our pediatric care team works with each child to ensure they can live a healthy, active life.

Building a relationship with your child’s entire care team, from the pediatric provider to the nursing staff and the friendly faces that greet you when you arrive, will make your child’s experience more pleasant. Your child’s pediatrician should be where you start for questions about your child’s health – their job is to keep your child as healthy as possible, so your kids can reach their full potential!

Q.What is most rewarding to you about the work you do at Kaniksu Community Health? What are some of the biggest ways you’ve seen the community impacted by Kaniksu?

A. “There is great satisfaction in working with such an amazing group of people,” states Tammy Undiemi, pediatrician and Chief Nursing Officer at KCH. “We are all passionate about making a difference in the lives of our pediatric population and their families, and adding positive value in our communities.

At KCH, we prioritize delivering quality care to each and every patient. To ensure we stay at the top of our game, we have implemented systems that monitor and improve our delivery of care year after year. For example, over a period of four years, we decreased our number of patients with uncontrolled diabetes from 36% to 14%. In 2024, we once again achieved the National Quality Leader awards for diabetes and hypertension.

Q.What is your vision for Kaniksu Community Health moving forward?

A. Our goal is to strengthen relationships with community partners and patients, allowing us to make a lasting, meaningful impact on the communities we serve.

Q.What do you enjoy most about being a part of the local community?

A. “There is a sense of purpose to what we do,” stated CEO Kevin Knepper, “in knowing that we are positively contributing to making the lives of our neighbors healthier, one patient at a time.”

MARIGOLD BISTRO A Warm Welcome Awaits You at

Serving up comfort, connection, and community

Marigold Bistro might appear unassuming from the outside, but step beyond the exterior, and you’ll find a tranquil atrium with a charming atmosphere, a soothing water feature, and the warm aroma of fresh, made-fromscratch meals. For owner Cassandra Cayson, the space represents more than just a restaurant—it’s a place of connection, comfort, and community.

“Whether it is a regular we see nearly every day or a first-time visitor, there’s always a special experience to share,” Cassandra says. That personal touch is part of what sets Marigold Bistro apart. During the day, the bistro offers hearty breakfasts and satisfying lunches, transforming after-hours into a full-service catering venue for private events, both on and off-site.

Cassandra is no stranger to the Sandpoint dining scene. After her previous restaurant, Forty-One South, closed in 2021, she turned her attention to event planning. But it wasn’t long before she found herself missing the day-to-day rhythm of restaurant life—and, more importantly, the relationships built through shared meals and familiar faces. When longtime friend Judy Colegrove decided to step away from Tango Café, Cassandra saw an opportunity.

“Things fell perfectly into place for me to transition back into the restaurant business. I liked that we could operate for our regular service throughout the day and still have the flexibility to do events,” she explains.

Marigold’s menu includes a variety of classic breakfast and lunch favorites made from scratch, showcasing the best of their cuisine. “Some customer favorites are the Reuben, Fish Tacos, Mediterranean Omelet, and Eggs Benedict (our Thursday morning special),” Cassandra shares. The culinary creativity doesn’t stop there—the bistro’s catering service offers fully customized menus based on each client’s preferences and budget.

While the flavors speak for themselves, the dining experience at Marigold is just as thoughtfully crafted. “Within the casual setting, we strive to provide friendly, professional service,”

Cassandra says. The bistro also offers a comfortable conference room and event space for business groups—ideal for meetings, luncheons, and presentations.

The kitchen is led by Chef Ian Dillon, who brings years of experience and a familiar touch to the team. “In fact, Ian Dillon was our Sous Chef at Forty-One for many years,” Cassandra adds. Together, they recently hosted a romantic Valentine’s dinner featuring an upscale à la carte menu—an evening reminiscent of their earlier days in fine dining.

Marigold Bistro works closely with other local businesses, such as Wood’s Meats and Evans Brothers Coffee, and is eager to expand those partnerships. “We love using local ingredients and are looking forward to expanding our connections with local farmers,” Cassandra says.

As for the name, “Marigold” carries personal meaning and symbolism. “Marigolds are a companion flower, protecting other plants like tomatoes from garden pests while attracting the necessary pollinators. I loved that!” she says.

With a vision rooted in warmth and community, Marigold Bistro offers more than delicious food—it provides a place where guests can feel “welcomed, relaxed, and appreciated.” Whether you’re stopping in for breakfast, hosting a luncheon, or planning a special event, there’s always something fresh and meaningful waiting at Marigold.

Thecrisp air of spring carries with it the promise of hope and renewal, and in Sandpoint, that promise is synonymous with the beloved annual Easter egg hunt hosted by the Sandpoint Lions Club.

“For generations, the Sandpoint Lions Club has been a proud host of our beloved annual Easter egg hunt,” shares Janice Rader, club president. “While our club is nondenominational, this event holds a special place in our hearts, as it beautifully unites our community. The joy and excitement radiating from the children's faces are truly priceless, and our volunteers cherish these moments.”

A tradition now held for over 70 years, the annual Easter egg hunt has woven itself into the fabric of the community, a testament to the enduring power of simple joys and shared experiences. Sandpoint community members look forward to coming together each year in a celebration of joy, tradition and springtime renewal.

The scene at Lakeview Park on the Saturday before Easter is vibrant, filled with children armed with their Easter baskets, ready to set off on a quest for colorful treasures. Parents, grandparents, and neighbors gather to create a welcoming and warm atmosphere, regardless of the spring weather that day.

Rain or shine, or even snow, the Sandpoint Lions Club is committed to bringing this beloved tradition to life for kids of all ages. The excitement for the event builds across the community leading up to the Saturday before Easter.

Held this year on April 19 at Lakeview Park at 901 Ontario Street, the egg hunt will begin at 9 am sharp, with thousands of eggs scattered across the park. Families are advised to get there early – and don’t forget to stay alert after the egg hunt for a chance to win prizes and visit with the Easter Bunny. The true magic of the event lies in the pure, unadulterated joy that radiates from the children as they discover hidden eggs and celebrate their findings. These are the moments that the dedicated volunteers of the Sandpoint Lions Club cherish, the reason they pour their hearts into making this beloved event a continued success.

“What makes our Easter celebration so unique is its deep-rooted connection to our community's history,” Janice says. “We witness families returning year after year, sharing cherished memories of their own childhood egg hunts, and now creating new ones with their children. And, of course, the iconic photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny at Lakeview Park remains a cherished tradition, capturing those precious moments for families to treasure.”

Stories of past egg hunts, favorite hiding spots, and close calls with the Easter Bunny are part of local springtime traditions, creating a sense of continuity and shared heritage. This intergenerational connection strengthens the bonds of the Sandpoint community, a reminder of the enduring power of tradition and family.

Of course, the Sandpoint Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt would not be complete without the iconic photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny. This cherished tradition, set against the backdrop of Lakeview Park’s scenic beauty, provides families with holiday keepsakes to treasure for years to come.

The Sandpoint Lions Club looks forward to the exciting new features added to their Easter event in 2025.

“This year, we're building upon these cherished traditions with an exciting new element: our inaugural youth-led initiative!” Janice says. “We're thrilled to announce that one of our dedicated Leo members, from our newly formed youth club, will be taking the lead in organizing and running the event. We're incredibly proud of their initiative and dedication to ensuring a fun-filled experience for all.” This initiative is a testament to the club’s commitment to cultivating leadership and community involvement among young people.

Watching the excitement across the faces of kids and parents alike is always a highlight of the event for Lions Club volunteers. Seeing family, friends, and neighbors come together as a community to celebrate Easter signals that the beauty of spring has arrived in Sandpoint.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, local vendors will be on hand to provide refreshments and treats. Buckin' Beans will be serving their delicious coffee in the parking lot, providing a warm and energizing start to the day. The local Girl Scout troops will be offering their irresistible cookies, bringing a touch of sweetness to the celebration and providing the opportunity to further support members of the community.

“Prepare for an unforgettable day! The excitement of the egg hunt, the delightful photo opportunities with the Easter Bunny, and the support of fantastic local vendors await you,” Janice shares.

The Sandpoint Lions Club extends an invitation to the entire Sandpoint community to join them in making this year’s Easter celebration a resounding success.

There are numerous ways to contribute and become a part of the Sandpoint Lions Club’s cherished Easter tradition. Volunteers are always welcome to assist with event setup, hiding eggs, organizing age groups, crowd control, post-event cleanup, and stuffing eggs. Donations of Easter eggs, unopened bags of candy, small prizes, and monetary contributions to help cover event costs are always greatly appreciated.

Showing support for local businesses by purchasing from the onsite food and coffee booths is another way to contribute, along with sharing the event details with friends, family, and neighbors, and promoting the event on social media to help spread the joy.

Janice says community members can also support the Sandpoint Lions Club by becoming a member or supporting their ongoing community service. “Youths aged 12-18 are encouraged to join our Leo club,” she says. “To inquire about volunteer opportunities or donation needs, individuals can contact the Sandpoint Lions Club directly. Our website and social media pages are excellent resources for staying informed.”

Looking ahead, the Sandpoint Lions Club is already planning other exciting community events. Mark your calendars for their multi-day yard sale, taking place from May 30th to June 1st.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to declutter and find treasures,” Janice says. “We're inviting community members to participate by renting a 10x10 space for just $50! We will begin accepting donations for the yard sale on April 26th. Stay tuned for more details on how to reserve your space and contribute.”

As summer approaches, the Sandpoint Lions Club has also begun preparations for their annual 4th of July celebration. They are proud to continue the tradition of hosting the fireworks display, organizing the community parade, and providing food and entertainment at the beach. Stay tuned for more details shared on their website and social media as the event approaches.

The Sandpoint Lions Club’s annual Easter egg hunt is a celebration of community, tradition, and the simple joys of childhood. It’s a moment where generations come together, creating memories that will last a lifetime. The club’s dedication to nurturing community spirit and creating lasting memories is evident in every detail of the event, and everyone is invited to share in the Easter joy.

“The Sandpoint Lions Club is committed to strengthening community spirit and creating lasting memories. We eagerly anticipate celebrating Easter with you, and look forward to seeing you at our yard sale and 4th of July celebration,” Janice shares. “We can’t wait to see you there!”

CULTIVATING SANDPOINT: Gardening for Growth

Local gardens and programs bring the community together through nature

As the grip of winter loosens and the first signs of spring emerge, Sandpoint’s gardening community comes to life. Residents can reconnect with nature, cultivate their own food, and learn from the best. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, Sandpoint has a strong network of organizations and programs supporting education, sustainability, and community involvement.

Nurturing Knowledge: Sandpoint Library Garden and Seed Library

A hidden gem in Sandpoint’s gardening scene, the Sandpoint Library Garden and Seed Library provides a wealth of resources for local growers. The library’s outdoor garden offers an inviting space for visitors to explore seasonal plantings and gain inspiration for their own backyards. The Seed Library is a unique program allowing community members to "check out" seeds, plant them, and later return harvested seeds to keep the cycle going.

The initiative encourages biodiversity and provides free access to heirloom and native seeds, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the region’s rich horticultural heritage.

A Sanctuary of Native Beauty: North Idaho Native Plant Arboretum

For those interested in preserving and promoting the native flora of North Idaho, the North Idaho Native Plant Arboretum offers a living collection of indigenous species that thrive in the local climate. Located in Lakeview Park, this botanical haven, managed by the Kinnikinnick Native Plant Society, is a valuable educational resource that highlights the importance of conservation.

Visitors can explore well-maintained trails that showcase an array of trees, shrubs, and perennials, each carefully labeled with educational signage. The arboretum serves as a hub for gardeners looking to incorporate native plants into their landscapes, providing insights into species that support local pollinators and require minimal irrigation. Guided tours and workshops held throughout the year offer a deeper dive into the ecological benefits of native plant gardening.

Growing Expertise: University of Idaho Extension in Bonner County

For those eager to expand their gardening knowledge, the University of Idaho Extension in Bonner County is a premier source of education and hands-on training. The Idaho Master Gardener Program, offered through the extension, equips participants with science-based horticultural training that they can apply in their own gardens and share with the community.

The program includes courses on soil health, pest management, composting, and waterwise gardening, ensuring participants gain a well-rounded skill set. The extension also operates a plant clinic, where locals can bring samples of diseased or struggling plants for diagnosis and advice.

A Place to Grow Together: Sandpoint Community Garden

For those without the space for their own garden, the Sandpoint Community Garden provides an opportunity to cultivate fresh produce while connecting with fellow gardening enthusiasts. Located at the intersection of Boyer Avenue and Pine Street, the garden features 72 plots available for seasonal reservation and a designated space for the local food bank.

Community gardens like this one promote food security, environmental stewardship, and social engagement. Gardeners of all experience levels come together to tend their plots, share tips, and exchange homegrown fruits and vegetables. With raised beds, a composting area, and on-site workshops, the garden is an essential resource for those looking to learn sustainable growing practices while fostering community spirit.

Educating and Inspiring: Bonner County Gardeners Association (BCGA)

A cornerstone of Sandpoint’s gardening community, the Bonner County Gardeners Association (BCGA) is dedicated to spreading horticultural knowledge through educational programs and volunteer initiatives. The BCGA offers a Home Horticulture series and classes on topics ranging from organic vegetable gardening to landscape design and pest control.

BCGA members actively participate in local gardening efforts, beautifying public spaces, assisting school gardens, and supporting community-driven planting projects. The association also maintains demonstration gardens, which serve as living classrooms for residents looking to expand their gardening expertise.

UNDERSTANDING MORTGAGES IN SANDPOINT

Rates, loan types, and smart borrowing tips

Amortgage is one of the most important financial tools for homebuyers in Sandpoint, Idaho, enabling individuals and families to purchase property without paying the full price up front. This loan, typically provided by banks or lending institutions, allows buyers to make monthly payments while building home equity. As of April 2025, mortgage rates have been fluctuating due to economic conditions, impacting affordability for potential buyers. Understanding current trends, loan types, and strategies to secure a mortgage is essential for making an informed home-buying decision in a competitive market.

UNDERSTANDING MORTGAGE RATES

Mortgage rates significantly influence the overall cost of a home and the monthly payments buyers must make. Various factors, including inflation, determine these rates, as do the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policies and broader economic conditions. Homebuyers can borrow more affordably when rates are low, whereas higher rates increase borrowing costs. Here are several key elements that influence mortgage rates:

Economic conditions: Strong economic growth often leads to higher rates, while downturns typically result in lower rates.

Inflation: Rising inflation can push mortgage rates higher as lenders adjust for the decreasing value of money.

Federal Reserve policies: The Fed doesn’t directly set mortgage rates but influences them by controlling short-term interest rates.

Credit scores and loan types: Individual borrowers’ creditworthiness and the type of loan they choose also play a role in determining rates.

As of early 2025, the average mortgage rates in Sandpoint hover around 7.2% for a 30-year fixed-rate loan and 6.5% for a 15-year fixed-rate loan. Adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) typically start lower, around 6.0%, but may rise over time. First-time buyers should stay updated on market trends and consider locking in a rate to avoid unexpected increases.

TYPES OF MORTGAGES

Choosing the right mortgage is crucial, as different loan types cater to different financial situations. Below are some of the most common mortgage options available to Sandpoint homebuyers:

636 Morning Star Mountain Road

Priest River, ID

This stunning property is the result of a significant investment in exceptional design, high-end materials, and superior craftsmanship. Every inch has been meticulously planned to offer an unparalleled living experience. From the breathtaking architecture to the finest finishes, no detail was overlooked. Fixed-Rate Mortgages (FRMs): These loans maintain the same interest rate throughout the loan term, typically 15 or 30 years. They offer stability and predictability but may come with higher initial rates compared to adjustable options.

Adjustable-Rate Mortgages (ARMs): These loans start with a lower interest rate for a fixed period (e.g., five years) before adjusting periodically based on market rates. They can benefit those planning to move or refinance within a few years but pose risks if rates rise significantly.

FHA Loans: Backed by the Federal Housing Administration, FHA loans are ideal for first-time buyers, requiring lower down payments and accommodating lower credit scores. However, they come with mandatory mortgage insurance.

VA Loans: Available to veterans and active-duty military personnel, VA loans offer competitive rates, no down payment requirements, and no private mortgage insurance, making homeownership more accessible to those who qualify.

Idaho homebuyers may also benefit from programs like the Idaho Housing and Finance Association’s (IHFA) home loan programs, which provide down payment assistance and reduced-rate mortgages for eligible borrowers.

TIPS FOR SECURING A MORTGAGE

Navigating the mortgage process can be complex, but preparation can improve the chances of securing favorable terms. Here are some key tips:

Boost Your Credit Score: Lenders use credit scores to determine loan eligibility and interest rates. A higher score (typically above 700) can secure lower rates. To improve your score, pay off debts, avoid late payments, and reduce credit utilization.

Manage Debt-to-Income Ratio (DTI): Lenders assess the ratio of your monthly debt payments to your income. Keeping this below 43% increases your chances of approval and loan affordability.

Save for a Down Payment: While some loans allow low or no down payments, having at least 20% reduces mortgage insurance costs and improves loan terms.

Shop Around for Lenders: Comparing rates and terms from multiple lenders can result in significant savings. Sandpoint homebuyers can consult local mortgage brokers, banks, and credit unions to find the best deal.

Understand the Loan Terms: Before committing to a mortgage, consider factors like loan fees, closing costs, and prepayment penalties in addition to interest rates.

Local resources such as the Panhandle Affordable Housing Alliance and financial advisors in Sandpoint can provide additional guidance on securing a mortgage.

Understanding mortgage rates, loan types, and financing strategies is essential for making informed home-buying decisions. With rates fluctuating and various mortgage options available, prospective buyers should take proactive steps to improve their financial standing and secure the best possible terms. Whether buying a first home or investing in property, consulting with local experts and leveraging available programs can make the mortgage process smoother and more affordable.

TEDDY ROOSEVELT IN SANDPOINT

FROM HUNTING TRIPS TO PARADES, ROOSEVELT’S VISITS WERE ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY

W ho was the only POTUS to visit Sandpoint? Teddy Roosevelt, although he was not the sitting president at either time.

In 1886 he passed through during a hunting trip, hearing of the reputation of the village of Sand Point as a good time. He had such a good time at the Palace Hotel that he neglected to secure sleeping quarters. Late in the night, the only available bed belonged to a local, the namesake of Selle Valley. The great debate skills of Roosevelt kept him from sharing the bed with a stranger who only wanted to sleep in his own bed.

In 1911, the only living ex-President of the time visited again, this time with greater fanfare. Arriving in the private railcar

owned by the head of the Spokane International RR, the visit included a parade along the main streets, a lake trip to Warren Island on the steamer Northern, a community talk at the Rink Opera House, ending with a dinner with local and state officials at the Hotel Idaho. All along he emphasized he wanted to visit with locals, and not engage in speech-making. He lived up to his master storyteller reputation, however.

His farewell used the private railcar of the general manager of the Northern Pacific, leaving in the snow from the Sandpoint train depot to Missoula.
