Aside from gardening sustainably, and gardening for food, the garden can also be a place of mental health. Many of the benefits that you go out of your way to enjoy, and actively spend money on, can be achieved simply through the garden. The garden can be a place of privacy and rest, much like a mini retreat. For this reason, you might want to plant according to season, with something to enjoy in spring, summer, fall and winter. For example, tulips and crocus will pop up every year during spring, roses in summer and fall, and witch hazel in winter.

It’s not important that the garden always be “practical” to be a place of health. Growing a sense of well-being and safety is not to be scoffed at, as the state of our mind contributes considerably to our physical health. You might be inclined to plant roses for their scent, mint because of its relaxing smell in the bath, lavender because you like to cut the flowers for the dinner table, or dahlias for their burst of color. There are flowers that attract butterflies or hummingbirds, and plants that simply provide greenery. There are a variety of trees that do nothing for your plate but everything for lazy summer days in your hammock. Whatever the reason, investing in a garden is investing in your home and your health. And that is an investment worth making.

Preventative Care is Self-Care

Put your health in your control

by DANIELLE LARSSON, BOUNDARY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

Self-care. It’s the world’s latest favorite catchphrase. It seems you can’t go anywhere without hearing or seeing it, and honestly, out of all the phases our society goes through, I hope this one is here to stay. The message is simple: You can’t pour from an empty cup, so ensure you’re keeping yours full. For us to effectively take care of others, we must first take care of ourselves. Take care of yourself so that you can be healthy and happy, do your job well, help and care for others, and do all the things you need and want to accomplish in your typical day. Generally, when you think of self-care, the things that immediately come to mind are: getting a massage, working out, eating nutritious food, getting outside, reading, and so on. All of those are very important to self-care, but often what is missed is that preventative care is an instrumental part of self-care.

Preventative care refers to tests and screenings performed to check your health status so that you can make informed decisions on your health and lifestyle. Preventive care includes regular physical exams with your primary care provider (PCP), cholesterol and blood pressure screening, eye exams, immunizations, cancer screenings, and blood sugar levels.

Feeling anxious about screening labs and testing is natural, but taking the time each year to go to your annual check-up puts your health in your control. Getting a diagnosis, or ruling out a diagnosis, can relieve your anxiety and provide reassurance that can be profoundly helpful. Your PCP can help you identify risk factors through simple blood tests, screening, and physical exams. Having that knowledge allows you to mitigate your risk factors by making healthy lifestyle changes or pursuing treatment recommended by your PCP. Early detection allows for the best chance to cure or reduce the effects of a disease. Knowledge is power; the sooner you have the information, the better the opportunities for positive outcomes. You should not wait for symptoms to be present.

There are different levels of prevention:

•Primordial Prevention: Pursuing a healthy lifestyle from birth. For example, raising our children in a way that reduces exposure to unsafe or unhealthy conditions, providing them with healthy food choices while educating them on the importance of a well-balanced diet and encouraging physical activity.

•Primary Prevention: To prevent a disease from ever occurring. For example, immunizations.

•Secondary Prevention: This emphasizes early disease detection, healthy-appearing individuals with subclinical forms of the disease. For example, the beginning stages of a disease, with no apparent symptoms, and detected through screenings.

Boundary Community Hospital and Boundary Community Clinics are committed to providing the care our community needs. We are proud to offer state-of-the-art laboratory equipment that allows inhouse testing to be completed with results often in only a few hours. Our Cardiopulmonary Department now offers echocardiograms, stress tests, and pulmonary function testing. Our Diagnostic Imaging Department is usually able to get you an appointment the same day as requested and offers 3-D Mammography, 4-D Ultrasound, MRI, CT scans, Diagnostic X-rays, and DXA Scans.
