The Fourth of July holiday is so much more than parades, picnics and fireworks. It is a time to reflect on how blessed we are to live in a country that allows us to speak freely, pray openly and live a life of freedom. It is also a time to honor those in our country’s past and present who have fought for the privileges we have. The cover photo of the Kootenai Valley, photographed by Bonners Ferry resident Renee Lund, reminds us to stop and reflect on the true meaning of the Fourth of July celebration.

A Celebration of Community Kootenai River Days 2015. Article and Photos by Robert Lavala.
Whenever anyone attempts to bring an age-old tradition back to life, there is always the chance that it will never be as good as it was before. Last year the Bonners Ferry Chamber of Commerce and a group of tireless volunteers did just that. They revived the Kootenai River Days celebration, and the community responded. Beginning early in the morning with a pancake breakfast at the airport and followed up closely by a run through the Wildlife Refuge, the event last year got off to a flying start. All throughout the event, which lasted three days, there were many interesting and fun things for the entire family to enjoy. This year the event will be held July 4 through July 12. Months of planning goes into any event of this magnitude, and the amazing volunteers are back at it again. “Each year the event will gain more momentum and have more events,” according to spokesperson Wendy Hawks. There were many events in the past that the group would like to bring back and hopefully will. Insurance regulations and liability issues, however, may hinder the process for certain events that are on the “risky” side. Life was simpler when this fun-filled event
8
started back in the 1960s, and the events could be done for the sake of fun and excitement. Today, however, lawsuits and liability govern most of the activities many would deem, “fun and exciting,” such as the race down the Kootenai River on inner tubes and some of the other logging games that involve both chainsaws and axes! But the volunteers and planners, along with the Chamber of Commerce, are working hard to come up with a full schedule and proper venues that will leave every Boundary County resident and any visitor glad they came out with their family. Speaking with Hawks last year, I asked about becoming a volunteer, and she expressed the need and availability for more helpers. This year will be no different and the planning meetings are ongoing at Mugsy’s Tavern and Grill located at 7161 Main Street in downtown Bonners Ferry. The planning meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30pm until the event draws near, then the meetings will be more often. You can call Mugsy’s at 208.267.8059 to confirm the times. Another special memento that is being introduced this year is the 100 Year Anniversary Coins minted by the Sunshine Mines. The
LIVINGLOCAL
Chamber has reserved 200 coins at the special price of $25 per coin. Orders can be placed and dropped off at Riverside Auto Center at 6471 Bonner Street near downtown. The coin features a beautiful scene of Boundary County with trees, pine cones and a large four or five point buck on one side, and a ferry being propelled across the Kootenai on the other. The events this year promise to be something special and will feature a large parade through the downtown area, a wonderful fireworks display at the fairgrounds, the PRCA Pro Rodeo, a three-day Pow Wow put on by the Kootenai Tribe and live music performed by Miah Kohal. There will also be many different kids’ events and games, a car show, an oldtime farm equipment show, a history walk and arm wrestling! Then add a giant BBQ, the celebration of Boundary County’s oldest residents, a Wednesday Wine Walk and the famous Pancake Breakfast and you have a multi-day event fit for a king. One of the nice things about an event so large is the fact that there will be something for everyone. Each day will feature something for all ages and interest levels and as the time draws nearer for the start of the massive celebration,

one knows they are even there. This writer will take this opportunity to say, “Thank you!” on behalf of the residents and visitors who will attend the event and have fun with their families. And if last year, the first year back after a twelve year hiatus, you didn’t get recognition, we as a community say it again — “Thank you for your dedication, sacrifice and hard work!” So, with plenty of time to mark the calendars, set aside some time each day for a trip downtown (or wherever the events are held) and get ready during the week of July 4 to 12 for a community celebration that folks will talk about for the rest of the year.
Remember that volunteers and vendors are still needed, and now that the event is close, the planning for the event is tightening up. Vendors are still needed and should make haste to contact the group in order to get the space you need. With any event of this nature, it is the volunteers who deserve the accolades. So often this group of hard working individuals do what they do and no

Badgers Triumph TWELVE ATHLETES PARTICIPATED AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR TRACK AND FIELD. ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY ROBERT LAVALA.
Competition has been at the bedrock of every society since the beginning of recorded history. Whether it was throwing a knife at a target or proving your army was able to win, competition was at the heart of the matter. History is rich with grand competitions dating back to the first Olympic games in Athens, Greece. Contests of strength, stamina and agility would see the best in any category rise to the top and receive the best prize. This track and field season proved no different in fierce competition, aside from the grandiose spectacle that large events boast. Each student from the various communities put forth their best athletes on the field to compete in discus, shot put, long jump, triple jump, pole vault and high jump. On the track the various dashes, hurdles and relays provided an exciting platform for runners at every level. As each event unfolded, the athletes were being honed by coaches and fellow students to do their best and push for higher goals. One such goal was going to the Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA) State Championship in Middleton, Idaho. The athletes of the Intermountain League District, from freshmen to seniors, prepared and gave their all at both daily practice and each succeeding track and field meet. The hard work paid off. At the district competition twelve of the Bonners Ferry Badger athletes threw far enough, ran fast enough, jumped high enough and pushed through to go to the State Championship. Heading to State were: freshman Jordan Young running the medley relay and the 800m; freshman Haley Wenk throwing the shot put; sophomore Natasha Webster running the medley relay and the 200m dash; sophomore Isaac Lavala pole vaulting and running the medley relay; junior Victoria Smith pole vaulting; junior Jack Wade running the medley relay and throwing the discus; junior Warren Carle running the medley relay and the 300m hurdles; senior Tucker Cavender running the 3200m; senior Kendra Urbaniack pole vaulting and running the medley relay; senior Chase Dinning running the 800m; senior Jacob Perkins running the medley relay, the 800m and the 1600m; and last but not least senior Mackenzie Mendenhall who ran the 100m hurdles, the 300m hurdles and the long jump.
LIVINGLOCAL
Out of this magnificent group of young people several made it to the podium. Before I tell you who they are, let me say that there were at least 30 teams from all over the State from 1A to our level, 3A. The competition was really at a high level, and for our athletes to succeed took hard work and determination. Did the runners, jumpers and throwers who didn’t make the podium exhibit any less dedication, determination and fortitude? Not at all. Each of our students had an amazing work ethic, and we are proud of each one. Six of our twelve took medals, and one, Mackenzie Mendenhall, took the honor of State Champion in two of her three disciplines. Before we get to the actual placements and what events the six placed in, let me set the stage for the event itself. Down south they have really nice weather this time of year, and every track and field event that many of the schools have attended for the past month and a half have been met with warm and sunny days. As the kids from Bonners Ferry, Kellogg, Priest River and Timberlake rolled into town, so did the wind and the rain. The temperatures dropped significantly, and all of a sudden we were right at home. Everyone knows in North Idaho that track and field season means wind, rain and even snow at some meets! So day one was rainy with a touch of wind and a bit chilly for some not used to our normal track meet weather. As the day went on, however, the rain settled down and the wind died down. Many of the finals were on Friday, but for some of the running events, such as hurdles, there were only prelims and the finals would be on Saturday. The meet started at 9am and lasted on Friday until after midnight. The next day would find the weather a bit nicer, and the finals ready to yield State Champions. Special congratulations go to Mackenzie Mendenhall winning gold in the 100m and 300m hurdles and silver (second place) in the long jump. The other five athletes finding the podium were Jacob Perkins winning fifth place in the 1600m and the medley relay team (Jacob, Isaac Lavala, Jack Wade and Warren Carle) getting sixth place. So until next season, keep pushing yourself, believing in yourself and going for the win!

UNIQUE, ECLECTIC AND DELICIOUS Stop by for shopping and stay for lunch! By Patty Hutchens. Walk into Under the Sun in downtown Bonners Ferry, and you may not leave for quite awhile. With the unique home décor, gifts, jewelry and local crafts, this whimsical, charming and fun store certainly does carry just about everything under the sun! In fact, they are the only story in the area that carries the popular Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan, among many other intriguing items. Shelly and Jack Yount opened the store in May 2006 and operate it with the help of two of their three daughters, Kendall Cady and Kynsie Pauls. “We are a very family oriented business, and we treat all of our employees as if they are family,” said Shelly, who has called Bonners Ferry home since she was 6-years-old. “In turn, the customers always comment how they love how it feels like home here.” And just like home, customers can enjoy a wonderful meal in the store’s organic bistro that includes a full organic espresso bar, smoothies and gelato. They have a full lunch menu where the soup, sandwiches, salads, pies and cake are all made from scratch. “We always use organic and natural ingredients and, whenever possible, local products,” said Shelly. And the fun part about the bistro is that there is always something new and different on the
12
menu. “Our chef prepares creative and unique new dishes each day, which provides our customers a daily special that is different all the time,” said Kendall. “You never know what you will find on our menu!” Jack, who has lived in Bonners Ferry his whole life and who has worked as a self-employed logger, does the roasting of the coffee at Under the Sun. “Jack is our in-house roaster with Red Rooster Coffee Co.,” said Shelly. “It is quickly becoming more of a business than a hobby though,” she adds referencing the popularity of the coffee. Perhaps just as unique as the gifts and home décor at Under the Sun is the building in which it is housed. “This building holds a lot of good memories for a lot of Bonners Ferry locals who remember it as the Lindsay-Helmer Hardware Store,” said Shelly. “We received a lot of support for having kept all the original character of the building. The store really wouldn’t be what it is without this building.” And if you have not been to Under the Sun recently, you won’t want to miss the newest addition — the Backstreet Market. Under the Sun has teamed up with its neighbor, Purple Sage Paints and Holly Dots, to host monthly
LIVINGLOCAL
events. “The Backstreet Market, which is open the first weekend of every month, features up-cycled, repurposed and vintage finds that inspire the soul,” said Kendall, who adds that Under the Sun’s Facebook page will also have information on any additional dates for the market. Shelly, Jack and their entire staff are committed to the community of Bonners Ferry beyond the walls of Under the Sun. “We donate our time to the Domestic Violence & Crisis Hotline Fashion Show every year and also donate to as many local charitable functions as possible,” said Shelly. The couple credits their success to many factors, including hard work and a true passion for what they do. “We love our job and we have such great support from our loyal customers,” said Shelly. Whether it is looking for great gift ideas, shopping for some new home décor or just a tasty and healthy homemade lunch out, Under the Sun will provide you with all that and more! GENTLE AND CARING Dentist’s approach to care leaves patients smiling. By Patty Hutchens. Let’s face it. Going to the dentist is not something most people look forward to. But since opening his Bonners Ferry practice in August of 2007, Hank Willis, DDS has helped many through their fears by providing them with his gentle and caring approach to dentistry. “I strive to provide excellent quality dentistry with a gentle touch,” said Dr. Willis. “Parents tell us all the time that their kids really look forward to coming for their dental visits.” Dr. Willis realizes that many patients are apprehensive about a visit to the dentist, but said he and his team aim to provide the best care in the most compassionate, reassuring manner. He adds that his goal is to do what is best for his patients’ oral health. He treats all ages, providing both general and cosmetic dentistry including cleanings, exams, white fillings, dental implants, custom whitening, veneers, crowns, bridges, root canals and tooth extraction. “We also perform wisdom teeth extractions,” said Dr. Willis. Dr. Willis and his wife Hannah have lived in Bonners Ferry for 11 years and enjoy the community they call home. He attended dental school at the University of Washington and also did his residency there. “I was on a scholarship in school, which I was able to
repay by working at the Kaniksu Clinic for two years,” said Dr. Willis. When he completed his two year commitment at Kaniksu, he and Hannah knew they wanted to stay. It proved to be a great decision for them and the people of Bonners Ferry. Dr. Willis and Hannah have four children ranging in age from 4 to 11, and they agree that Bonners Ferry is a wonderful place to raise their family. Because Dr. Willis and his staff are dedicated to the community, they give of their knowledge and time to help at various community events. “We’ve helped with the middle school job fair, the anti-smoking programs at the elementary schools, and I’ve given dentistry presentations at McCormick school and for the 4-H program,” shared Dr. Willis. But his desire to give back extends far beyond the Bonners Ferry community to places such as Africa, Haiti and Mexico where he has participated in dental mission trips. “This February I ran a dental clinic in a rural village in Haiti and extracted 700 teeth in five days!” exclaimed Dr. Willis.
to my awesome team,” said Dr. Willis. Carey, who handles all the scheduling, billing and insurance, also greets patients as they arrive. “She has been doing her job for over 14 years and does it very well,” said Dr. Willis. Krystal, Cindy and Stacey are Dr. Willis’s extraordinary assistants who back one another up and are always willing to help wherever needed. “I couldn’t ask for two better hygienists than Paulette and Annie,” said Dr. Willis. “They’re both so skilled and knowledgeable, and I often hear people say at the end of their cleaning that their teeth have never felt so clean and that they did not experience any discomfort.” Dr. Willis, who is accepting new patients, has been at his current location at 6811 S Main St in Bonners Ferry since August 2007. Due to growth, he plans to build a new office a year from now next to the Pend Oreille Veterinary Office and across the street from ET Wireless. “It will allow us to better serve our patients’ needs” said Dr. Willis.
Not only is Dr. Willis grateful to the community that has supported him over the last several years, but he also praises the people with whom he works. “I really have to give credit

IN FOCU S SWISH!
The 3 on 3 Bonners Ferry Tournament returns for its eighth year. By Patty Hutchens. Photos courtesy Anne Tompkins. Mark your calendars and gather your friends; the 2015 Bonners Ferry Swish is set to take place on July 11 in downtown Bonners Ferry. One of Idaho’s premier 3 on 3 basketball tournaments, the event is a favorite of not only those in our community, but others who travel here especially for the tournament. And it’s not just the participants who look forward to this event each year; it’s the spectators as well. “We have people from all over who come for the event,” said Anne Tompkins, the sports director for Boundary County Parks and Recreation Department who is sponsoring the event for the third straight year. “People come from Montana, Spokane, Newport and clear down to Lewiston.” The cost is $60 for a three-player team and $80 for a four-player team. “Our brackets go from 9-years-old to 99,” said Tompkins. There will not be a shortage of things to do in Bonners Ferry the weekend of the event. Tompkins said they coordinated with the Kootenai River Days’ committee so that both events took place on the same weekend. “There are also a lot of class reunions taking place the same weekend,” said Tompkins. The goal of the Swish Tournament is to provide a fun time for all ages. The small amount of proceeds made go back into the Parks and Recreation Department’s programs. Last year’s proceeds went to help fund new backstops. And while the proceeds are not significant, the economic boost to the downtown economy is considerable. Tompkins explains that the tournament purposely does not have food vendors so that attendees can experience some of the great restaurants in the area. “We really want to promote the downtown,” she said. The event is something that is embraced by the entire community, as is evidenced by the many sponsors who have stepped forward to help make this event a success. Their money helps with advertising while the registration fees cover T-shirts and other prizes. Among the event sponsors are 3 Mile Store & Café, Boundary Abstract, Boundary County Parks & Rec, Boundary County Rotary, Community Title, Far North Outfitters , Idaho Forest Group, JB’s Tire and Auto, Kootenai River Inn, Mountain West Bank, Pace-Kerby Insurance, Columbia Bank, Profotofix Printing & Photography, Rusty Moose, Riverside Auto and Under the Sun.
TOP LEFT Kids of all ages enjoy the camaraderie and competition of the Swish tournament. TOP RIGHT This year’s tournament will coincide with Kootenai River Days giving families a chance to participate in and watch many activities.

She promises it will be a great time! For more information and to register, go to www.bfswish.com.

COVER STORY A RACE TO SAVE A LIFE
Team Laughing Dog rides in the Race Across America to raise funds for rare disease. By Patty Hutchens.
A grandfather is someone with silver in his hair and gold in his heart. - Author Unknown If you are a parent, you know you would do anything for your children. And the same can be said for the love grandparents have for their grandchildren. But what about a grandparent willing to take part in a cross-country bike race for his grandchild? While many may find it physically prohibitive, that is exactly what 70-year-old Dave Sturgis plans to do this month as part of Team Laughing Dog in the Race Across America (RAAM), a 3,000 mile ride that is widely recognized as the world’s toughest endurance bicycle race. And he’s hoping his efforts will save his grandchild’s life. Sturgis’ grandson, 8-year-old Henry (Hank) Sturgis, was born with a rare disease — cystinosis. Cystinosis is a genetic disease that causes the amino acid, cystine, to accumulate in the body’s cells. As it accumulates, it destroys some of the body’s organs, including the kidneys, liver, muscles, white blood cells, eyes and central nervous system. It is extremely rare, afflicting only 500 people nationwide and 2,000 worldwide Sandpoint’s Team Laughing Dog, which has taken part in the Race Across America for the last several years, is riding to raise funds to benefit the 24-Hour for Hank Foundation; a foundation started by Dave Sturgis’ son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Tricia Sturgis, in 2008. From the moment Brian and Tricia first learned of their son’s disease, they have worked tirelessly to find a cure. And while there is not a cure as of yet, there have been huge strides towards that goal.

“Hank’s health is so much better because of the new 12-hour delayed release medication … there are less side effects like nausea and vomiting. Hank learned how to take all of his liquid meds that he used to take through his tube in pill form now, so he was able to get his g-tube removed in April. It is a huge milestone for him and our family,” said Tricia who adds that Hank takes 48 pills each day just to stay alive. “The typical cystinosis patient takes 8 to 12 medications a day.” In addition, Hank must have eye drops placed in his eyes to prevent blindness. “The eye drops are supposed to be taken every hour, and we only do about three to four times a day,” said Tricia. They are stored in the fridge so the cold solution is hard to get in a child’s eyes. With advancements, we might have a different delivery method for this drug, which would be wonderful since this treatment is not easy to be compliant with.”
Sturgis took part in the race as one of the support members. He drove one of the vans while Sandpoint resident and biking enthusiast Mel Dick navigated. It was then Dick planted the seed for Sturgis to take part in the Race Across America as a rider. “Mel said he would love to find a cure for Henry and said he believed it could be done through Team Laughing Dog,” said Sturgis. That was all he needed to hear. With all the support his son, daughter-in-law and grandson had already received from Team Laughing Dog, there was no way he could say no.
While the challenge would be a great one for anyone, much less a 70-year-old, Dave Sturgis has always been athletic. He played football for Western Oregon and signed with the New Orleans Saints where he played in 1968 and part of the 1969 season. He continued an active lifestyle and became more involved in cycling in 1990 when his running partner had issues with his knees. But riding across the country is something he never envisioned himself doing. “As a kid I always rode my bike to town. It was five miles, and I thought that was forever,” recalls Dave.
“My promise to Hank is to make his disease go away forever,” said Dave. “It is an investment in Hank’s future and his right to a quality life.”
At the time they formed their foundation, there were only two other foundations that supported cystinosis research. “Now there are 30 families (who have them),” said Dave Sturgis, adding that 24-Hours for Hank is one of the top fundraising entities in the country for cystinosis research. So just how is it that Dave Sturgis finds himself as part of a huge athletic challenge? Last year

Dave started training last October and, with the help and encouragement of Dick, feels ready to face the challenge. He is grateful to the sponsors who have stepped up, especially given the fact that this year’s fundraiser 24-Hours at Schweitzer, which benefits the foundation, was canceled due to lack of snow. “The biggest part of that fundraiser was the pledges,” said Dave Sturgis, who shared that the sponsors who were committed for the ski event have graciously rolled over the funds to the Race Across America instead.

Since he began training in October, Sturgis has lost 40 pounds and feels great. “Mel keeps me accountable,” said Sturgis of his training partner.
The 3,000-mile race will begin in Oceanside, California and end in Annapolis, Maryland. And once the race starts, it never stops. To put it in perspective, Dick shares that the Tour de France covers 2,100 to 2,200 miles over a 21-day period; the Race Across America covers 3,000 miles, and team racers are required to finish in nine days. “And there is 170,000 feet of climbing on this ride,” adds Dick. “That’s like riding up Schweitzer 70 times.” So just why would people take part in such a grueling activity? If you think it may be for prize money, nothing could be further from the
WWW.BONNERSFERRYLIVING.COM JUNE/JULY 15
truth. There is not any monetary recognition for the top finishers. “Everyone who does it has a cause. Collectively it raises about $2 million each year,” said Dick. The Race Across America has approximately 75 participants who are solo riders and others who are part of either a two, four or eight person team. This year’s Team Laughing Dog will consist of Sturgis; Kirk Johnson, who is an employee of Schweitzer and who served as crew chief for Team Laughing Dog the first four years; Arlene Cook, who is the head of the Schweitzer ski patrol; and Bob Robinson, a 72-year-old friend of Dave Sturgis who has been a huge supporter of 24-Hours for Hank. “He bikes 200 miles a week and will probably be one of our best climbers,” said Dave. As the time draws near for Dave Sturgis to get on his bike to trek across the country, he has only one goal in mind. To save his grandchild’s life. “My promise to Hank is to make his disease go away forever,” said Dave. “It is an investment in Hank’s future and his right to a quality life.” If you would like to donate to Team Laughing Dog in support of 24-Hours For Hank, visit: www.active.com/donate/24hoursforhank2015/ raam. To date they have raised $69,860 on the way to their goal of $100,000.

Tips to Keep You Healthy
It’s Not You… IT’S EVERYONE.
BY TERESA PESCE.
This column is dedicated to the middle-aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older,” acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. Some women think their middleage weight and shape changes are the result of childbirth. Actually, the menopausal 10-pack some of us now carry has little to do with that. You tend to get it whether you have given birth or not! Sorry, but that’s the GOOD news. Go ahead and blame a few grey hairs on your progeny, but your avoidance of turning sideways when wearing a straight skirt? That rounded profile will happen whether you’ve had children or not. (And they tried to slip it past us, but allow me to point out that although we can’t “spot reduce,” we can now “spot gain!” Boo! Hiss! Denial, denial, denial! To whom do
LIVINGLOCAL
I write my scathing letter of angst?) So if that was the good news, what’s the bad news? Well, you know the parts of a woman’s body often described as “pert”? In middle age, they become victims of the Great Estrogen Escape. According to www.healthline.com, “Aging Changes in the Breast” by April Kahn: “One of the main causes of aging changes in the breasts is a natural decline of the female reproductive hormone estrogen. This reduced amount of estrogen causes the skin to become dry, making it less elastic. With less elasticity, the breasts lose firmness and

fullness and develop a stretched and saggy appearance. Or, as described in “Breast Changes — Should I Be Concerned” at www.bidmc.org: “[During menopause] your hormone levels drop and your breast tissue becomes less dense and more fatty.” Or, in laywomen’s terms, breasts go from a taut salute to saggy bags of jiggle. Great. Just great. Are you kidding me? Firmness fades. Gravity wins. Will exercising the supporting muscles return your breasts to their former glory? It will help, of course, but aging is inexorable. Why even put this wretched information in print? To spare you any selfblame or shame and to reveal that some experiences have nothing to do with your will-power or your commitment to looking great. After the age of 45, losing weight is tough because, according to Dr. Bravata of Stanford University, “The reality is that if you eat and exercise the same amount, you’ll still put on weight in perimenopause and menopause.” Sorry, but this means that even if you are a wise food consumer and consistent exerciser, you’ll have to step it up in both areas to counteract your lower metabolism. It gets worse. Seattle health coach Jennifer Lovejoy explains, “Women have a lower metabolism
after menopause, and the lack of estrogen also may cause cravings for carbs and fats.” I’ve heard of stacking the deck, but this is ridiculous! Women get a lower metabolism at the exact time they’re programmed to crave carbs and fats?! Remember Ann-Margaret warbling, “How Lovely to be a Woman” in the musical “Bye-Bye Birdie”? In instances like this, I beg to differ. Well, we can succumb to despair or we can adjust. (Or we can dunk an entire package of Oreos in a glass of milk. Wait — no! Don’t do that!) Why am I imparting all this depressing information? Because I want you to know it’s not YOU; it’s the global feminine experience. It’s not your imagination or your fault. “The Change” means our eating and exercise habits will also have to change, just to maintain the status quo. To improve the status quo, they’ll have to change even more! Is this just the most unfair thing ever? Yes. But none of us is alone in this. Even model goddess Christie Brinkley says she is amazed at how much more effort she must expend to maintain what she has always had. And as for the “girls” ~ here’s a special hint because I love you guys: Go to www.shopcoobie.com and check out what many consider to be the most comfortable bra on planet earth. Get Back in the Game KINESIOTAPE HELPS WITH MUSCLE SPASM, TENSION AND PAIN.
BY KENDALL ZACHA, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY. Kinesiotape is a unique kind of tape intended to help alleviate pain within muscles, tendons and ligaments. The design of the tape allows for the body’s muscles and joints to be stabilized without losing any range of motion. The nature of the flexible, stretchy tape puts the body back into its correct position and can replace thick, bulky braces that limit the body’s movements. Kinesiotape can be used by anyone who experiences muscle spasm, tension or pain but is especially popular amongst athletes who need not only the support, but who also need to function correctly in order to optimize his or her performance. Dr. Kenzo Kase, a chiropractor and acupuncturist, developed the tape for his patients who wanted something smaller and more pliable than a brace or wrap. Dr. Kase tried many different athletic tapes but found that most were too stiff and did not easily move with the body, making the joint immobile. To create something that flowed smoothly, Dr. Kase needed a tape that would stretch and be elastic just the same as a human muscle.
the joint into correct position to relax the irritated muscle, tissue tension or reduce the pain. The stretch of the tape combined with the adhesive gently pulls on the skin and joint to reinforce proper alignment. The accepted theory is that the tape lightly pulls on the skin to increase the surface area and promote positive circulation under the dermis and reducing abnormal edema or fluid buildup in the area.
Boundary PERSONAL CARE
Common sites of kinesiotape application include the knees, shoulders, lower back and neck. There are many different arrangements used when taping but can be molded to an individual’s needs. The flexibility and amount of stretch can be adjusted to the patient’s liking, but general instructions suggest not stretching either ends of the tape but putting a good amount of stretch to the middle of the tape to pull the joint into correct position. Kinesiotape may not be the answer to every patient’s problems, but for some it can help ease the pain so everyday activities are more enjoyable.
Personal Care Services Bathing Dressing Meals Transportation
After reaching this conclusion, he then needed a material that would stick to the skin and last for up to five days per application. To create such a material, Dr. Kase studied elasticity and adhesives and finally found the correct amount of elasticity for the tape and created the name “Kinesio” due to the relationship of the tape’s purpose and the proper movements of the body called kinesiology.
Our caregivers are the best! Medicaid clients welcome.
Before kinesiotape is applied, the patient should be properly assessed to correctly determine the spot of pain and discomfort and to identify any other underlying conditions. Once the treatment plan has been set, kinesiotape can be a great addition to keep the patient positively continuing with their treatment. Often people acquire muscle soreness and pain due to incorrect posture, injury or stress. Kinesiotape is able to help combat these complications by encouraging proper alignment using the stretch of the tape to put

Thank goodness (for) island fun. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos by San Juan Islands Visitors Bureau, San Juan Nature Institute and Jim Maya.
Doesn’t a trip to an exotic island sound wonderful? You know the type of island I mean. The kind of island where the pace of life is slow, the scenery is picture perfect, and all you have to do is kick off your shoes and relax? Maybe you want to head to an island where the natural world abounds, but you can always pop in to town for a plate of freshly prepared sushi. The great news is you don’t have to head to Hawaii or even to the Caribbean to have a phenomenal island experience. All you have to do is head to Friday Harbor on the Washington coast and use it as a starting point to live out all your island dreams. Named by Spanish explorer Francisco De Eliza, the San Juan Islands are accessible by car or walk on ferry, private boat or seaplane. One year, my husband and I had the opportunity to go to the San Juans via seaplane. We loved that besides it being affordable, it was quite a unique and scenic adventure. We loved the idea of being able to take off from and land on the water. We also loved the particularly scenic route that was taken by the seaplane. And like a boat, the seaplane arrived in the bay and pulled right up to the dock where yachts were moored. The best part about the San Juans is that one

can find something for everyone. Friday Harbor is overflowing with quaint shops and wonderful restaurants. But that is where the fun just begins. Starting in Friday Harbor, there are self-led various biking tours of all lengths and for most ability levels. On bike or by car, you may be delighted to see lighthouses and rocky bays, fields of lavender, forests of pine and fir where gentle deer abound. If you look closely, you might even see one of the island’s many shy foxes. Then, there are the real stars of the show: the island’s resident and transient orca whales. During the summer, you might catch a glimpse of these gentle giants, with a baby in tow, lolling around the bays and feeding. Although there are commercial whale watching tours, I would argue that they are best viewed from a small sailboat or kayak. If you want to get away from it all, head over to the almost horseshoe shaped Orcas Island. Moran State Park and its many waterfalls, woodlands and lakes will delight you. The island contains lodging for every taste and budget as well as different restaurants. Of course, the island also offers a variety of outdoor activities, both on sea and on land. Finally, you can head over to Lopez Island if you would like to have a cycling friendly vacation.
