MADE IN AMERICA! Rustic Furniture Superstore Factory “On-Site” FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED SINCE 1983!
PUBLISHER Let’s Party! The comedian Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying — Let’s Party!” I think it sums up perfectly the feeling we have when the days are warmer, the sun stays out a bit later and the trees and flowers begin to spring to life again. We have more energy, and it seems much easier to accomplish those things on our “to-do” lists. We clean out closets and dig deep to do some spring-cleaning. Spring is also a time for rebirth and change. While the New Year is often a time to vow to make certain changes in our lives, spring can inspire the same resolutions. It’s a good time to sit back and reflect on just what you want to change in this time of rebirth. Possibly you want to breathe new life into your relationships by setting aside more time to spend with those who are important to you. Or how about spending more time in nature, whether it is hiking, gardening or taking up a new outdoor activity. Many of us look forward to the farmers’ markets that come to life with fresh fruits and vegetables. This month we will be recognizing World Health Organization Day on April 7. The theme for this year is food safety. It is a good time to take inventory of the food you are eating. Where did the ingredients come from? Are they locally sourced? The World Health Organization is calling on producers, policymakers and the public to promote food safety and ensure that our food is handled in a safe manner from farm to table. As we go forth into spring, take time to literally and figuratively stop and smell the roses. And you may want to plant some vegetables in your garden too! Whatever you do to experience the spring season, remember it’s nature’s way of saying – Let’s Party! Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

A Celebration of Excellence Honoring those who make a difference. By Heather Alexander, Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest.
On March 12, 490 people from across North Idaho and eastern Washington gathered at the Spokane Convention Center to celebrate a year of excellence and achievements at Goodwill’s annual Award & Recognition Night.
Newby, who was killed in action in Iraq in July 2011.
Goodwill honored 28 individuals and organizations with awards, recognizing their excellence in 2014. “Tonight we celebrate you, your excellence, your successes and your partnerships,” Clark Brekke, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest told attendees. Several individuals and organizations from the communities of Coeur d’Alene, Sandpoint and Ponderay were honored at this year’s ceremony.
In 2014, Newby-ginnings helped over 150 veterans in SSVF obtain furniture for their new homes. Many times, when a veteran gets housed with the help of SSVF, they have little more than the clothes on their backs. This is where partners such as Newby-ginnings are such a crucial piece of the success puzzle for these individuals and families. “The furniture and household items she so graciously assists with allow veterans to have their own space that is comfortable and inviting,” said Fawn Schott, general manager of Grant Funded Programs for Goodwill. “This is a huge boost to their independence.”
2014 Mission Newby-ginnings
Award:
2014 Employer of the Year: Coeur d’Alene School District
For decades, Goodwill has sought out partnerships with other organizations and businesses, working together and sharing resources as we offer a hand up to individuals who are facing barriers in their lives. Newbyginnings, located in Coeur d’Alene, began partnering with Goodwill’s Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) program in early 2014, providing support to previously homeless veterans who are securing stable housing. Theresa Hart founded Newby-ginnings in memory of her son, U.S. Army Specialist Nick
Community employment opportunities are an important part of Goodwill’s mission to help people become independent. Many businesses throughout eastern Washington and North Idaho partner with Goodwill each year, opening job opportunities to men and women who need the chance for a hand up.

from public assistance to self-sufficiency through job search assistance, interview training and other services. Bryan Martin, maintenance director for Coeur d’Alene School District, was inspired to be part of the solution when he learned about the services Goodwill’s Working Solutions program offers. Bryan and several colleagues partnered with Goodwill and opened new doors to employment. “Customers and employees alike left in awe of their professionalism, knowledge and guidance,” praised Briana Richardson, Working Solutions regional manager in Coeur d’Alene. “The school district has offered to come to Job Club again when need be, work with our customers and keep us up to date on open positions. Together, we were able to better help our people feel more confident and prepared for long-term employment in the district.” 2014 Achiever of the Year: Christi Mosier The Achiever of the Year Award recognizes the accomplishments of a Goodwill participant who becomes employed by Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest. She was anxious to transition to a paying job to support her new family. Her positive attitude and strong work ethic impressed our staff immediately. She frequently spent her time helping other participants and job club members in their efforts. Mosier’s attitude and effort made such an impression on staff that they encouraged her to apply when a position opened in the Working Solutions’ office. “She has become a beacon of light at our office,” praised Michelle Garrett, employment retention specialist for Working Solutions. Garrett added, “We can count on Christi to give a helping hand and go above and beyond to help our customers. The timid, kind girl that came into our program is now a shining star within our organization, and we are so proud of her.”

2014 Award of Excellence: Chris Schilling, Ponderay Goodwill Store Manager Chris Schilling joined the Goodwill family in 2009, starting first collecting and sorting donations at the Ponderay Goodwill store. Staff describe Schilling as constantly striving to improve his skills. He was constantly looking to learn more and grow. In the last several years, Schilling has been promoted several times. In early 2013, he was promoted to facility manager. “Chris is one of those individuals who seeks to help other people, to do things well, and make a difference,” said Heather Alexander, director of marketing. Schilling is frequently seen helping at events in other regions for Goodwill. In 2014, Schilling was promoted to a regional manager role, which enables him to share his passion, energy and skills with other facilities as needed. Schilling’s facility leadership team in Ponderay praised him, saying, “Chris provides a great example of a positive and optimistic work attitude, willingness to listen and answer questions, and outstanding customer service.” Goodwill’s employees and programs are spurred on by the challenge that Goodwill’s founder, Edgar J. Helms, gave shortly before he passed away. Helms said, “Remain unsatisfied until each person in your community has an opportunity to achieve their fullest potential.”

HOME & ESSENTIALS Tips & the Latest Trends
Transforming Transitions SENIOR MOVE MANAGERS® PROVIDE COMPASSION AND FAMILIARITY.
BY SARAH FRIESEN, GIG HARBOR HOME MANAGEMENT.
“You’ve sorted my undies so I suppose it’s OK for you to help me again tomorrow,” Margaret said with a twinkle in her eye as her tired body leaned against the walker. Newly diagnosed Parkinson’s was quickly stealing her independence as she struggled to maintain balance. Her daughter, Carol, evaluated options from her own home out of state. Somehow, from afar, she had to move Mom into the safety and care of a senior living community. Fortunately, Carol was quickly introduced to a unique type of assistance that would go far beyond what a mover could provide. Often partnering with a moving company, a Senior Move Manager® offers expertise, oversight and compassion during a senior’s transition to a new living space. A Senior Move Manager’s® (SMM) work can begin hours, days or weeks prior to the arrival of a moving company. The SMM will get to know Mom, establish trust and help sort her most private and closely held belongings. She’ll measure furniture and create a floor plan, make a moving schedule, ensure family members have arranged for continuity of care and oversee the transition in order to ease stress levels on family members. Senior Move Managers® take pictures before packing a single box so that on Mom’s first night in her new home she’ll have the familiarity of
LIVINGLOCAL
WWW.CDALIVING.COM APRIL 2015
knowing exactly where her phone is on the bedside table or that her toothbrush is in the top right hand drawer in the bathroom, just as it has always been. Before the movers pack the kitchen, the SMM will sort the food, throwing out expired items that cause illness. Aware that the small area rugs are tripping hazards, she’ll make sure they are left behind. The movers do a very specific job of getting belongings from one location to another, while a SMM® looks at the entire transition. She knows Mom will need a quiet, warm place to go when her doors are open and people are traipsing through her house. She’ll realize Mom hasn’t had any food and needs a bite to eat. She’ll even suggest improvements for making her new home as safe as possible. By evening, Mom’s boxes will be unpacked, her bed made just the way she likes it and her pictures hung on the wall. And after the move, her SMM® will visit to make sure she’s settled in happily. If your loved one is moving soon, review your options thoughtfully. Hiring a member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers will ensure high ethics, compassion, efficiency, organization, safety and responsiveness to your needs and wants.

No Apologies Necessary!
Does anyone really have the kind of house we see on Pinterest? You know, neat and tidy, lots of windows streaming in rays of natural light and perfect pillow placement on their beds and sofas? I guess it’s possible — if they have shipped their kids and dogs to the grandparents for a week, hired a cleaning crew and pulled out the pristine linens from their new packaging. If you’re like me, you are tired after working all day, and the last thing you want to do when you come home is cook, clean and “Pinterest” your house. I’m feeling pretty on top of the world if I can squeeze a workout in there sometime too.
MAKE YOUR HOME WARM, INVITING, USEABLE AND COMFORTABLE.
I recently read an article about how to keep your house “company ready.” It listed things that people with clean houses do habitually. Here are some of their — not so realistic — suggestions:
BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER, PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER.
Make your bed before you leave in the morning or at least pull the comforter up and smooth it out if you’re in a rush. I’m imagining the confused look of my dogs when they jump on the bed to assume their napping positions as soon as I’m out the door. Use baskets to organize things. Scatter cute baskets throughout the house to corral your things. I’ve
18
LIVINGLOCAL
tried this and most of the stuff that finds its way to the bottom of these baskets is lost forever. Hopefully, its stuff we won’t miss anyway. I think baskets work well for Legos, hair products and towels, but not scattered throughout the house to collect things. Do a load of laundry every day. I didn’t know this was optional. Don’t procrastinate. Pick up messes immediately — the longer you wait, the harder they are to deal with. Last week I found a caramel container stuck to one of the back seats in my Suburban. Trying to pull it off, I quickly realized two things. One, it was going to be “hard to deal with,” and two, the plastic part covered up most of the sticky caramel anyway. Yup. It’s still there. Never go to bed with a dirty kitchen. Right. Where am I going with all this? I’m saying that none of us should be apologizing for what some might consider a dirty house. We should consider it “lived in.” Instead of cleaning up while we’re cooking, we are going to be helping our kids with homework, we should be dancing around when a good song comes on, and yes, do leave those dishes for another time.
WWW.CDALIVING.COM APRIL 2015
NOW OPEN IN SANDPOINT!
Just to be clear, interior design is not about creating a space that you have to keep clean, can’t touch and are nervous when your kids are dribbling a ball through the house.
Whenever I go to someone’s house for an interior design consultation, more often than not, I hear apologies for the mess or remarks of embarrassment about how their house looks. Some even apologize for not knowing how to decorate. Just to be clear, interior design is not about creating a space that you have to keep clean, can’t touch and are nervous when your kids are dribbling a ball through the house. Interior design is about developing the spaces we have and making them warm, inviting, useable and comfortable. We live in houses, not museums. Believe it or not, those of us who work in the interior design industry have houses, kids, dogs and messes too. Don’t apologize or be nervous about asking us for help — it’s what we are fortunate to be able to do for work. We are happy to have a job that allows us to be a part of your lifestyle! A Coach in Your Corner FOCUSED CONVERSATIONS AND POWERFUL QUESTIONS. BY DEBORAH OLIVE. Quick! When you hear “life coach,” what comes to mind? If your response is a bit murky, you’re not alone. Life coaching emerged in the ‘60s and ‘70s, but didn’t evolve into a profession until the ‘90s. Perhaps you’ve heard of life coaches, but chances are you haven’t hired one, and it’s quite possible you don’t know anyone who has. Anyone serious about sports has a coach to bring out their best. If you’re a parent supporting your child in their chosen sport, you want a coach who not only teaches the basics, but who will develop your child in the nuances of the sport. Whether it’s perfecting a swim stroke, getting a great jump off the blocks in a track meet or excelling in soccer, football or hockey, you expect the coach to maximize their performance. Perhaps the word “coach” conjures up a picture of sweaty teens focused on someone blowing a whistle and barking orders, so it may be difficult to see the coach as a partner. The coach trains the mind as well as the body and provides structures to: • Set performance goals • Address limiting beliefs • Develop and maintain a vision • Deal with stress • Measure and analyze performance • Maintain motivation (and more!) Let’s shift gears and ask, “What does it mean to have ‘a coach in your corner’ in life?” A life coach provides a structure for success that supports their client to generate results: faster, more consistent, less stress – you fill in the blank. The best life coaches know your answers are within you. Ralph Waldo

Emerson said, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” If you hire a life coach, you hire a partner skilled in releasing your potential. Life-coaching is based on two things: focused conversations and powerful questions. Though we engage in conversations to convey information, cement social ties or pass the time, a coaching conversation is different. It requires planning and followthrough. It’s strategic. Powerful questions cause you to think in new ways. When people are told something, they don’t have to think, and it raises little awareness, motivation or creativity. Powerful questions raise all three and reveal action steps quite different than most on our “to-do” lists. A Realtor who consistently earns over a million dollars a year told me that his coach asked, “Why aren’t you building high rises in the city?” He said, “I don’t know anything about building high rises.” But the question triggered him to ask, “What would I need to know? Who would I work with? Why not me?” Within months, he invested in his first high-rise project. Whether you want better parenting skills, to have greater ease in paying your bills, to grow your business, to overcome a health challenge, to have more free time with your family or … or … or … the key is who you fulfill your potential. If there’s something you’re struggling with or that keeps you awake at night, partnering with a skillful life coach might be just the ticket to move you from sleepless in Coeur d’Alene to snoozing through the night — confident of your success.

Basic Communication UNDERSTANDING YOUR PET’S BEHAVIOR IS THE KEY TO HARMONY. BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL. As the human population increases, so too do the number of household pets. Cats, dogs and others are all learning how to live with their “human-folk” while keeping peace in the household. To complicate things is the sometimes-contradictory behavior that different species exhibit under normal circumstances or in response to stress. For example, a cat that wags its tail is in attack mode, whereas a dog’s wagging is considered a gregarious, friendly signal. When human owners confuse these signs, bad things happen! The key to developing a good relationship with companion pets is for owners to have solid knowledge of their innate, instinctual behavior and, of course, their basic needs. Animals communicate their social status in various ways, and it’s the pet owner’s responsibility to learn the cues of a particular species. What makes them tick usually revolves around their evolutionary background. What signs and gestures helped them survive as a species? What do barking, digging, chewing, chasing and begging all have in common? Annoying and often dangerous, unless owners are running a cattle ranch or raising sheep, these behaviors are mostly undesirable. At first they are cute (when they are pups), but it doesn’t take long for any of the above to become tiresome. Dogs just don’t understand that the dinner table does not hold a seat for them! Some of the above can be downright dangerous. Especially if a pet whose instinct is to herd mistakes his car for a sheep. Most of these inappropriate behaviors are easily avoided but even when discovered late can be treated. Owners must first understand “where the dog is coming from.” A general rule is to ignore the bad and reward the good behavior.

Cats most often present with problems that tend to either stink or cause irreparable damage to furniture! Inappropriate elimination, scratching and various aggressions are the most common undesirable cat behaviors. Again, understanding the pet’s ancestral nature is of paramount concern when dealing with behavior issues. For example, cats are often thought of as solitary, independent beings. Many people don’t realize how much love and affection they really need. Not to mention their obsession with cleanliness; if boxes aren’t kept clean, cats will often eliminate outside of them. Play is super important, along with mind-stimulating toys and accessibility to heights. When the basics are missing, the trouble often begins. So, humans, do your husbandry homework, sometimes a small change can establish harmony quickly. Understanding pet behavior is the glue for the human-pet bond. When pets’ basic needs conflict with those in the home, it’s usually due to lack of knowledge or a misunderstanding in the house. Occasionally, however, genetics and lack of socialization make it

impossible to keep the bond loving. In any case, if untreated these behaviors often lead to early euthanasia. If a family pet is annoying its roommates with a particular habit, please schedule a consultation with your veterinarian before it’s too late! Dr. Dawn Mehra, North Idaho Animal Hospital 320 S. Helping Local Homeless Families FAMILY PROMISE GOLF/WALK EVENT MOVES TO COEUR D’ALENE RESORT COURSE.
BY COLIN ANDERSON.
When most think of the homeless, images of drifters in tattered clothing often come to mind. It is a stereotype that is not always accurate. The reality is there are homeless people around us each day. Sadly, the majority have fallen victim to a series of unfortunate events such as illness, addiction, job loss or family loss. There are many organizations in the region helping to combat the problem, and most are divided into three categories when it comes to those whom they help - men, teens, or women and children. But Family Promise of North Idaho is unique to our area as volunteers are able to keep families together through this difficult time and also help build them back up together. Now in its fourth year, the annual Family

Promise Golf/Walk event is one of three major fundraisers throughout the year. Heading up this year’s event is Randall Henry, co-owner of Henry Griffitts Golf Clubs in Coeur d’Alene. Now a board member, Randall discovered Family Promise at a charity and volunteer fair at the KROC Center and got involved with the organization shortly thereafter. “I think they do so many great things because they’re not just a shelter, but also a rehabilitation center,” said Randall. “I like that Family Promise keeps families together during their struggles, and that’s what really drew me to the organization.” Randall grew up in the golf community, watching his dad teach 30 tour pros and traveling the country with him. His passion for golf and the connections to the industry are allowing the event to take

on new ideas and ultimately raise more funds that stay in the local community. “My goal is to make this the top fundraising event for Family Promise, and we’re working the connections we have to make it happen,” said Randall.
food and drinks, a presentation from Family Promise and have the opportunity to bid on silent auction items. Awards and prizes will also be given out as well as custom, locally made trophies. If you can’t make it out to the event, hole sponsorships are available as well.
With the event moving to the resort course this year, participants will be treated to a very unique experience. There is room for 62 golfers with plans to expand to at least 100 by 2016. Cost is $150 for the event but can be offset with pledges from family, friends or business sponsors. Included are 18 holes of golf with a cart and caddie. The event is Friday, May 15 with a shotgun start time of 1pm. Teams of four will compete against each other in a scramble format with various challenges throughout the day. Randall says some new technology will be rolled out on the course this year and, while he won’t give away all of it, he did let a little bit slip. “We will have an app this year where you can track the leader board and chat with other groups on the course. There’s some other really cool changes coming too, but you’ll have to sign up to find out what they are.”
Family Promise continues to give hope to local families struggling in our community. There are currently more than 100 homeless children in the Coeur d’Alene School District, and the need for a safe place is always present. Family Promise not only provides a safe haven for families, but education and counseling to help families get back on their way to self sufficiency. “It’s tough enough to be homeless let alone away from your family,” said Randall. “Watching these families work together is just awesome.” For registration information or to learn more about Family Promise of North Idaho visit www.familypromiseni.org or call 208.777.4190.
For those who consider themselves weekend hackers or haven’t ever swung a club, you can participate as well. Separate from the golf event will be a walk around the course. You’ll be able to stroll all 18 holes and take in all the sights that golfers from all over the country come to see. The walk is open to all ages and is another way you can help out this great organization. A post-event dinner will take place at the events center out at the course. Participants will have

A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP Comfort City helping customers find the right fit. By Colin Anderson. Photos by Jamie Sedlmayer. We all know what it’s like to wake up from a great night’s sleep. You feel invigorated, energized and ready to take on the day. We also all know what happens when we spend the night tossing and turning, stressing about work and family. You wake up tired, sore and cranky. While there are a variety of ways to eliminate stress in our lives, finding the proper mattress is often one of the best solutions to sleeping better, which leads to feeling better. “The number one thing when choosing a new mattress is finding the one that puts you in the deepest sleep for the longest amount of time,” said Dan Peach, owner of Comfort City Super Sleep Centers in Coeur d’Alene. With more than 30 years in the mattress business, Dan knows a thing or two about sleep. It was a little more than four years ago that Dan decided to branch out from the corporate world to start his own store with the focus being what’s best for the customer instead of what’s best for the corporation. “Before I felt my hands were tied because I always needed approval on things. Now with my own store I can take care of my customers immediately,” said Dan. Comfort City Super Sleep Centers is a family operation with wife Kimberly and daughter Autumn helping run the business. Each is upto-date on all the latest technologies and what
style of mattress best fits each person. Dan, Kim or Autumn will ask you what you like and dislike about your current mattress, find a price point you are comfortable with and walk you through a variety of different mattresses. “There is no number one bed in the world, otherwise everyone would be happy,” said Kim. “We strive to find the perfect mattress for you, not just what the ads on TV tell you.” A recent expansion to Comfort City Super Sleep Centers is the Bedz for Kidz section. “Unfortunately, many parents don’t think kids need a quality mattress, but it’s actually very important to have proper support as they grow,” said Kim. The Bedz for Kidz section carries a large selection of kids’ beds, dressers, bunk beds, specialty beds like car beds, castles, loft styles and daybeds, and quality mattresses in a variety of styles, with coils and without. Comfort City carries traditional spring mattresses as well as the newest wave of highend memory foam materials. Many of these beds come with adjustable bases, something more and more customers are asking about. “A lot more people are reading up on the benefits of an adjustable base,” said Dan. “These can help with issues like sleep apnea, snoring, circulation, acid reflux and make getting in and out of bed easier as well.”
LIVINGLOCAL

A good rule of thumb is to replace your mattress every eight to ten years. Our bodies go through many changes as we age, and the bed we chose 10 years ago might not be the best bed for us now. It’s with that in mind that Comfort City Super Sleep Centers takes extra time to find each customer the right bed for their best nights’ rest. “I want all of our customers to be extremely well taken care of. We really do give that extra effort,” said Kim. “It’s fulfilling to know I’m helping people sleep better and knowing I can direct them to the mattress that is just right for them,” said Dan.

COEUR D’ALENE
IN FOCUS THE LIL’ DOG PARK ASSOCIATION THAT COULD Coeur d’Alene’s off-leash dog parks. By Chris Shafer. For many dogs, going to an off-leash dog park is like going to an amusement park just for canines. Say the word “park” to a pooch who frequents a dog park, and watch the reaction. Depending on the dog, there will be barking, whining, wiggling, jumping or all of the above. Amusement comes easily to canines. Dogs don’t need rollercoasters to have a good time. They are experts at making their own fun. All you have to do is let them loose. At an off-leash dog park, pups are free to play games of chase and to mingle at the drinking fountain, meeting new friends and reuniting with old ones. In an off-leash environment, dogs can just be dogs with other dogs. It is all about being social and being able to frolic in a secure outdoor space. Last summer the McEuen Dog Park opened its gates to playful pooches. This downtown dog park is the city’s third. The first, Central Bark, opened in September of 2010 and was North Idaho’s first off-leash dog park. Cherry Hill Dog Park was the second to open. Now with three dog parks, dog owners, locals and visitors alike, can choose from locations on the west and east sides of the city, as well as downtown. So how did three dog parks happen in a struggling economy? The answer to that question is the Kootenai County Dog Park Association. This citizen action group raised the funds to develop the parks through private donations, along with a $5,000 “Dog Town USA” contest prize from Dog Fancy Magazine in 2011. Now that Coeur d’Alene has its three dog parks, this can-do organization, KC Dog Park Association, isn’t about to stop. According to Bob Macdonald, the association’s president, there are more parks in the works in other cities in Kootenai County.

For more information, visit KC Dog Park Association on Facebook. Chris Shafer is the writer and creator of Dog About Town NW, a regional blog that celebrates dog ownership in the great Northwest where outdoor adventures are typically more than a walk in the park. Some features to consider when choosing a dog park: • Do they have enough space for normal interaction? • Does it have access to water and shade? • Does it provide a separate area for smaller dogs?

Holly & Karen Hansen People + Homes = Neighbors
WE DO THE MATH!
H.E.L.P. AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY AT THE SAME TIME.
Real Estate partners, dynamic mother/ daughter team working for you 24/7. Effectively helping buyers and sellers identify their needs and accomplish their goals.
H.E.L.P. is the acronym for Help Every Little Paw. This organization is unique from the common animal rescue groups and organizations in that it is strictly a fundraising group. It is completely nonprofit with no paid employees. They acquire most of their funds through grants and are known for their fun and entertaining local fundraisers such as the Bartenders’ Ball, held annually the first Saturday in March, and Bark N Brew, which is always held on Father’s Day.
OUR PLEDGE TO YOU: Our Pledge of Performance is our sincere goal to guide you through the exciting process of selling and purchasing your home.
This organization started as a discussion in the Hansen family living room. The economy had just plummeted and families were suffering. But what about the pets, who would take care of them? They were suffering too. Pets were being abandoned and deserted by the families who were losing their homes and moving on. The Hansens looked into such circumstances. Some of these included a bag of food that was torn open on the floor and the toilet lid left up; that is the way they were left to survive in the hope that someone would come to their rescue, hopefully in time.
Karen: 208.659.6408 or Holly: 208.659.6438 1000 NW Blvd. Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814
In spring of 2010, the Hansens decided action needed to be taken and researched how to start a nonprofit. It was not an easy task, but necessary to apply for national grants in order to not burden the community they were trying to help. Holly Hansen, with a Masters Degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga, along with her mom, Karen, began to work on obtaining the nonprofit declaration. While waiting for approval of their nonprofit status, Karen researched grants. In November of 2010, their 501(C)(3) approval came in the mail, and the paperwork for their first grant was submitted that same day. During this time, Holly’s sister, Leah

Hansen, was gathering donated items and having weekly garage sales to pay medical bills for pets that were being abandoned at the local veterinarian hospital. H.E.L.P. is not a shelter. A municipal shelter is normally run by local governments, while no-kill shelters are usually private. Rescue organizations work closely with the shelters, and when they are overcrowded, the rescue groups find volunteers who will foster pets in their homes until they find forever homes. Each year, due to overcrowding and a shortage of foster homes, approximately three to four million cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters. H.E.L.P.’s mission is much different. They try to help keep these pets from ever having to go into the system. The Hansens realized the reason most of the pets were surrendered was due to the lack of money. Families suddenly found themselves in a situation where they could not care for the pet. H.E.L.P.’s five year goal was to have emergency medical, emergency food and a spay and neuter program in place. These goals were all met within three years! All of this was accomplished by one family with normal lives and jobs and the help of special friends to assist at the major fundraisers. Spay and neuter and emergency bills were approximately $10,000 the first year and have increased about $10,000 each subsequent year. GOT GUTTERS? Add style, protection and value to your home with Nicholson’s Custom Rain Gutters. By Colin Anderson. It’s not the most intriguing of discussion topics around the Monday morning water cooler. In fact, you’re probably more likely to talk about a kitchen remodel or what’s getting planted in the garden this spring; still, gutters are an often overlooked aspect of your home. “It’s amazing how different a house looks before and after,” said Caleb Nicholson, owner of Nicholson’s Custom Gutters. Caleb and his wife Sandi live in Athol with their three children and do custom gutter work all over North Idaho. The Nicholsons first knew they wanted to run their own business after spending years in Africa working for a Christian organization in a heavily Muslim population. While the couple faced challenges of raising three small children abroad, including language and cultural barriers and intermittent power failures, they were impressed with the dedication and hard work of the people who lived around them. “I had workers that would go out of their way to save me a few pennies on my orders,” recalled Caleb. “They really earned my trust by caring for the details, something I try and do with each and every one of my customers today.” Now happily settled in North Idaho, Caleb and Sandi really take the word custom seriously, believing each home deserves individual
attention. “We save people money by not selling them something they don’t need,” said Sandi. Nicholson’s Custom Gutters offer a variety of different seamless gutters, everything from aluminum all the way up to distinctive copper.
great as flower boxes that can hang below a window. The window boxes are perfect for growing herbs and flowers and are another way Nicholson’s Custom Gutters is keeping their environmental impact low.
Caleb goes to every home with the same approach; look at the current gutters, address any problem areas, determine a budget and what’s important and come up with a quote that fits the customer’s needs. Caleb has seen many cases where the gutters might look okay from below, but not so when he gets to the roof. “I’ve found all sorts of mold and other nasty elements growing in gutters that otherwise look totally fine.” If your gutters don’t need to be replaced, Caleb will do the dirty work for you by cleaning them out and making sure they are functioning properly. Nicholson’s Custom Gutters also carries Gutter Guards, a protective cover for your gutters that helps keep leaves, sticks and pine needles out of the gutters so they can drain properly.
A lot can go wrong trying to hang gutters yourself. If the angle is off even a half inch, they won’t drain properly, and gutters that aren’t seamless can leak and will need to be replaced sooner. “You need gutters because your home is your greatest asset,” said Caleb. “Without them rain can destroy your siding, warp your foundation and pools of frozen water during the transition months are very hazardous.” It might not be at the top of your list for home improvement projects, but a oneday fix might save you big in the long run.
Another inspiration they realized from living abroad was the ability to let as little as possible go to waste. When the business first began, Caleb and Sandi were wondering if there was a good use for the leftover ends after cutting lengths of gutters. After some thought, they realized that these leftover pieces would work

Bryce Catt grew up playing softball. She and her teammates have been together since they were 9 years old. “They have become my best friends,” she said of her team. The 18-year-old is a senior at Coeur d’Alene High School. She has lettered in academics and has had a 3.8 GPA during her high school years so far. She will continue playing the sport she loves at North Idaho College (NIC) next year where she will be a utility player, meaning that she can play just about any position needed. She is considering studying dental hygiene or physical therapy while at NIC.

In spite of the game he loves, he recognizes that there are no guarantees in baseball. “I think what intrigues me about baseball is that any team can beat any team on any given day,” Jordan said. In the words of the famous coach, Tommy Lasorda, “There are three types of baseball players: Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen and those who wonder what happens.” I’m pretty sure if the past is any indication, Jordan is one who will continue to make it happen.

North Idaho College AEROSPACE INDUSTRY JOBS TAKING FLIGHT.
ARTICLE PROVIDED BY NORTH IDAHO COLLEGE.
Anyone looking to crack the local aerospace industry can get a great start with North Idaho College’s aerospace program. Employment in aviation maintenance and advanced manufacturing is growing rapidly in North Idaho, requiring a highly skilled workforce. There was 16 percent growth in aerospace industry employment in North Idaho from 2008 to 2009, during the height of the recession, according to an Idaho Department of Labor 2010 report. “Having this training in our community is helping companies to make business decisions that favor North Idaho,” said Patrick O’Halloran, NIC Aerospace director. “For instance, in Priest River and Sandpoint at least two companies are expanding right now, and there’s a company expanding its operations into Post Falls this year.” Idaho Department of Labor (IDL) employment forecasts include a 9.5 percent projected increase in the aerospace, manufacturing,

advanced manufacturing and machining industries from 2010 to 2015. From 2010 to 2020, that growth is expected to be 20 percent. Jobs that the program would prepare students for have a potential average salary of $43,500, according to IDL. Training in CNC mill operation, composite materials, non-destructive testing and aircraft maintenance are among the programs offered through the Aerospace Division. To date, 87 students have attended with NIC’s new Aerospace division. Most have achieved at least one certificate already and 18 currently are on track to be our first two-year completers this May. While 66 students are currently attending, 18 of our graduates are already working in related employment. “There are still some seats available for summer and fall. It’s never too early to get the ball rolling,” O’Halloran said. For more information, call 208.625.2344 or email ace@nic.edu.

COVER STORY READY FOR TAKE OFF!
Aerospace industry contributes to North Idaho’s growth. By Jani Gonzalez.
Businesses, industry representatives and economic developers are responding to increased airport traffic and the needs of the aerospace industry here in northern Idaho. The Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene airports have both experienced increased air traffic but for different clienteles. While the Sandpoint Airport sees more tourist and aerospace industry traffic, the Coeur d’Alene Airport sees more general business commercial traffic. But business looks good and both are maintaining and evaluating ways to respond to the demand. Coeur d’Alene Airport & Corporate Flyers At the Coeur d’Alene Airport, Greg Delavan, Airport Manager, has seen a change from single-engine flyers to more corporate style jets. “The guys like me, who love to fly, don’t do it as much anymore because of the price of fuel,” he said. “But there are more corporate flyers because it’s so difficult to travel through commercially.” There’s a draw to fly through smaller, general aviation airports such as the one in Coeur d’Alene because business members can pick up colleagues from Kalispell or Missoula, Montana, for example, and have a “moving meeting” while on the plane to their destination. They can have a completely productive day and be back home in time for dinner. Delavan said there’s still an increase in tourism in the summer, but the change to more corporate flyers began in the early 2000’s with

Now, businesses such as ATC Manufacturing and Empire Airlines, both of which are based at the airport, hold court. ATC Manufacturing makes aircraft components particularly for Boeing. Empire Airlines has a dispatch for FedEx packages being shipped to northern Idaho, Canada and Alaska. Empire Airlines also assists startup airlines in California, Colorado, Hawaii and even Europe, according to their website. Lastly, North Idaho College is considering reinstating a flight school at the airport.

To further prepare students for aerospace jobs, North Idaho College created an Aerospace Division in 2013 with a $2.97 million grant from the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community and College and Career Training Initiative to attract students and future workers in the industry. The department is located at the Coeur d’Alene Airport and offers an associate degree and certificates in aircraft manufacturing and maintenance.

“Those are good jobs–jobs for our kids. [It’s a] good clean industry to work with,” Delavan said. “We estimate $150 million economic benefit as a result of having this airport here, and a lot of that comes from these jobs.” Sandpoint Airport on the Industry Map
more jobs and business growth in Sandpoint.
At the Sandpoint Airport, the tourism business was good until the recession hit in 2008 and 2009. It has steadily increased since, and its numbers have surpassed those from the recession, manager David Schuck said.
“Quest Aircraft had such an investment in the community… because they were not only designing the KODIAK, they were also manufacturing,” he said. “From an employment point of view, they really put Sandpoint on the map.”
“We saw a drop off in ’09, and it has picked up steadily in the last three years,” he said. “It increases on average 2 to 3 percent per year.”
Businesses in the industry not only create jobs but support other businesses by using their manufacturing services.
In addition to the return of tourism, there are a number of businesses in and around the airport generating revenue. Life Flight, an air ambulance service, and Timberline Helicopters, Inc., which provides services to the logging industry, are based at the airport. He estimated that Life Flight alone likely generates $1 million in business.
“As far as the economic impact from our airport, we’re probably one of the leading airports in the state because there are so many jobs performed at the airport,” he said.

In response to the growing aerospace industry, the Idaho Aerospace Alliance was formed in 2011 to unite businesses in northern Idaho. Jim Glenn, president of Titan Spring, Inc. said the alliance was created with the help of Idaho’s Department of Labor which conducted a study back in 2011 to identify the presence of the aerospace industry and its needs. “As we discovered more and more companies statewide, it was obvious they were all operating independently of one another in most cases not knowing what the other did,” he said. He is also president of the alliance. As with many businesses and residents, the industry is here likely because of the region’s beauty and natural friendliness. In addition, local industry and government representatives

have enticed businesses to come or stay in northern Idaho with several financial programs such as tax incentives, a sales tax exemption and a tax reimbursement incentive as ways to create and expand good-paying jobs in the area. The Future of the Airports For the Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene airports, both are making preparations to meet the demands of their customers. Sandpoint Airport will refurbish its runway. It’s a temporary fix until it can be rebuilt in 2019 with impending funds from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). “To rebuild the runway will cost $26 million, and those funds are ordinarily paid for by funding from the FAA, and they get that from passenger fees and aviation fuel taxes,” Schuck said. Similarly, the Coeur d’Alene Airport is planning their future. Delevan said there is property slated for acquisition when necessary. Right now, there’s a lot of potential, but they will proceed with caution. “I don’t want people to think that we’re going to attempt to compete with the Spokane Airport. That’s not viable–But there’s demand for a flight from Boise to Coeur d’Alene. We could have a commuter flight from Boise to Coeur d’Alene and maybe to Seattle,” he said. “That’s not entirely up to us, but someone with an airline that wants to do that.”
FAR LEFT To further prepare students for aerospace jobs, North Idaho College created an Aerospace Division in 2013.

In The Mix SPRING FASHION IS ALL ABOUT BOLD HUES AND SPORTY STYLE.
BY SARAH POLYAKOV.
For the next several months, warm weather is here to stay and what better way to celebrate than by refreshing your spring wardrobe. Fortunately, the spring trends for 2015 offer something for everyone and tend to be laid-back, yet stylish at the same time. This season’s most surprising “it” shade is yellow. Don’t dismiss yellow just yet; there are yellows with warm undertones and those with cool undertones. You might be surprised that wearing a blouse or sundress in saffron, amber, marigold or canary will be the color to help you make a fabulous entrance. There are also complementary echoes of fall 2014 prints in the works. During the fall we saw plaid reimagined. This spring, it’s all about plaid’s retro, sassy, sister print: gingham. Freshen up your wardrobe by adding a casual gingham shirt for layering. Or, if you want to take center stage, try a modern take on a 1950’s classic by pairing a gingham circle skirt with tank top under a slouchy, white blouse. Don’t forget this season’s combination pairing that is based on cool blues and bright whites. On warm days, why not wear a pair of white jeans with a blue and white printed dolman sleeve shirt?
by trying pieces designers are calling “sports luxe.” These items include sport-inspired moto jackets, cross body purses and of course classic polo shirts in an array of pastels. In fact, polo shirts are bigger than ever. Try pairing them with a knee length skirt for a dressy feel. Or if you prefer a more casual look, pair them with one of this season’s best ontrend pieces: culottes. Yes, culottes are back but they have been envisioned to have a slim cut and a longer line so that they flatter everybody. But, the best part of this season is that comfortable footwear is here to stay. The world’s feet can breathe a collective sigh of relief since five-inch heels are not on the horizon for spring 2015. Designers are offering comfortable yet dressy tennis shoes, sporty slides and an array of strappy, flat sandals that can be seamlessly transitioned from day to evening. Don’t forget accessories. The metal of the moment is polished brass. Look for chokers and chunky statement necklaces in richly colored brass. Top off your look with a pair of demure earrings for day and chandelierstyle earrings for a seamless evening look. As always, don’t forget to visit local boutiques first for these distinctive spring 2015 looks.

Tips to Keep You Healthy
Setting New Habits IT’S MORE THAN WILLPOWER.
BY TERESA PESCE.
This column is dedicated to the Middle-Aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older,” acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. Did you know that with each repetition of an action, you deepen a little road in your brain? Your brain points to various roads (neuron paths) and says, “Here’s the road I follow to brush my teeth. Here’s the one to drive the car.” You don’t have to slow down and ponder every movement in these activities — they’re automatic, well-traveled brain paths. Every habit, both good and bad, is like that. That’s why habits are hard to “break.” But they don’t break — you must persevere with new paths until the old ones fade and the brain learns to take the new path.
LIVINGLOCAL
WWW.CDALIVING.COM APRIL 2015
And as we all know, it’s much harder to break a habit that is always rewarded by a surge of dopamine, that addictive, feel-good chemical of reward bestowed by the brain. Did you know that drugs (bad) produce dopamine (whee!) and things like running (good) and sugar and sucrose (not so good) also cause its production? After all, there is a reason the tagline for See’s Candy is, “A happy habit.” Addiction isn’t necessarily bad; it depends on what you’re addicted to! Addiction can work for you (running) or against you (sugar). So when we blithely decide to
53
lose weight and get in shape and then wonder why we seem to resist our own selves at every turn, the cause isn’t weak willpower or lack of focus — it is most often our brain-path habits and dopamineproducing addictions! And those, my friend, aren’t overcome by good intentions. When you head toward the gym instead of driving to the local coffee haven for a tripleshot, something-sweet latte, you will find that you are trying to steer yourself out of a deeply ingrained brain rut. And let me tell you, it’s a reluctant ride. It feels like the power steering went on the fritz, and you’re trying to navigate with the wheel superglued in place. But before we succumb to complete despair or beat ourselves up because we’re “weak,” remember that just as a muscle will atrophy when not used, so will a brain-path. It will become shallower until it’s only a trace. And a raging, tantrum-throwing sugar-dopamine addiction fades when firmly replaced with an alternate dopamine source – preferably, exercise. “We can learn to recognize unhealthy patterns and stop them in their tracks. By increasing our awareness, we create new healthy pathways. This new awareness brings personal empowerment and creates greater freedom in our ability to choose new responses to old patterns.” (Referenced from the Earl Consulting Newsletter, Winter 2014). There is HOPE!! Your brain has an amazing capacity for change. Instead of pitting your body against your brain and suffering as collateral damage in their war, put some energy into uniting them.
In other words, the dopamine rush helps create the brain paths that prompt the rush: it creates a habit. Did you know that sugar triggers the same dopamine brain results as cocaine and heroin? So yes, you can become “addicted” to sugar, and your brain will happily repeat any activity (habit) that repeats that lovely “high.” This is why addictions are also referred to as “habits.” The reason I mention this impressive but distressing fact, is that we are so hard on ourselves when we stumble in our efforts to become slim and trim. We underestimate the forces at work within us, and we don’t pause to consider how deeply ingrained our mental habits have become or how sugar has seduced us into dependence upon it in order to feel good. These are the reasons losing weight and getting fit are so hard to do and feel so “punishing.” All the sugar-induced dopamine rewards stop. All the familiar paths to happiness and peace via food are forbidden.
Did You Know? Did you know that sugar triggers the same dopamine brain results as cocaine and heroin?
BELOW Try a healthy smoothie instead of that cup of coffee each morning.
It will be very hard to jerk our wheels out of those deep mental habit-ruts and guide ourselves into new paths. So instead of being hard on yourself, be in absolute awe of yourself that you would even attempt such a thing! And know that in the end, the same brain of yours that was once mapped one way will soon be mapped in a better way, and the addictions that drove you will not do so anymore. You’ll be free as well as fit. You brave, brave warrior, you. *Excerpted from “How Sugar Affects the Brain” by Nicole Avena.
Double-Edged Dopamine “A surge of dopamine that thrills us also consolidates the neuronal connections responsible for the behaviors that lead us to accomplish our goal.”*

PHYSICAL EXERCISE BENEFITS THE BRAIN. BY SUSAN HOFFMAN. Everyone goes to the gym for different reasons. Some want to lose weight, others train for an athletic event, or some go just to make sure they get their use out of a gym membership. And then there are those who go to build strength or to participate in cardiovascular exercises for a healthier heart. All of these are valid reasons to visit the gym, but what you may not know is that aerobic exercise is good for your brain! “Aerobic exercise has been shown, in numerous studies, to provide brain benefits ranging from enhanced cognitive flexibility to better memory to new cell growth. In addition, because working out floods your body and brain with the hormones that affect mood, it can have a significant effect on your mental health,” explains Danielle Restucci in her article “How Aerobic Exercise Helps Your Brain.” It is sometimes difficult to fit a gym workout into an already full schedule of work and commitments. It is easy to procrastinate going to the gym and use the time for other activities or obligations. But most gym goers will say emphatically, “I feel so much better after my workout.” During exercise, the body releases the hormones endorphins, dopamine and serotonin, which can decrease stress and temporarily enhance your mood. Some people might perceive a workout as endless boring moments on a treadmill or doing painful pushups and countless crunches. But a good gym should provide
many options which can be tailored both to what your body is capable of as well as an activity you might actually enjoy. Aerobic exercise includes walking, running, swimming, biking, yoga, dancing and rowing. The gym accommodates all ages, and going to the gym on a regular basis can combat brain shrinkage and increase cognitive capabilities. During exercise, the blood flow to your brain is increased, bringing oxygen and important nutrients to your brain resulting in better memory. Exercise is good for building muscles, but it also benefits the brain by slowing or even reversing the physical decay of the brain. Vigorous exercise is especially valuable for those with health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and even cancer. As with any type of exercise, injuries can occur resulting in structural problems such as nerve interference and spinal misalignments that may interfere with benefits of exercise. Therefore, regular chiropractic care can detect and correct a problem in order for you to restore and maintain your nerve system so that your workouts in the gym give you the optimum benefits to both your body and brain. The familiar expression and reminder of “use it or lose it” supports the knowledge that the brain, like all muscles and organs, declines with underuse and age. Therefore, when you exercise you should be encouraged that you will not only look better, but you will be boosting your brain by growing new neural connections. See you at the gym.

Fibromyalgia WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?
BROUGHT TO YOU BY COEUR D’ALENE HAND THERAPY AND HEALING CENTER.
Fibromyalgia is characterized by muscle inflammation, pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, poor concentration and memory, headache and depression. Because these symptoms are often similar to other medical issues and not visible to others, it can be very frustrating to diagnose and treat. Causes of fibromyalgia are not clear. Research is focusing on the role of diet, bowel health, leaky gut syndrome, viruses and environmental pollutants. Because the body may be thrown out of balance physically, nutritionally, hormonally and emotionally, it can be difficult to treat if only one area is addressed. To start, medical assessment is needed to identify any underlying conditions. Nutritional consultation with a professional familiar with fibromyalgia is important, especially when medications are being taken. Dealing with emotional and relationship issues is also important. From a therapy point of view, thorough assessment of posture, tissue tension, pain, swelling, range of motion, strength and endurance is important. Also it is critical to assess lifestyle and activity level to develop a plan that meets your goals. It has been noted that fibromyalgia often occurs as a response to multiple stresses, which can be physical or emotional. Pain (physical and emotional) causes us to tense and the tension

causes more pain. This pain-tension-pain cycle can be devastating to normal functions. Pain causes us to exercise less, which causes stiffness and more pain. When toxins are released though stress, activity, exercise or massage and the body cannot release them, pain often results. Myofascial release is a long slow stretching technique used by therapists to help patients release holding patterns and connective tissue restrictions. It is well tolerated by patients and can restore flexibility and mobility as well as decrease pain. Myofascial release treatment, lymphatic, massage and stress reduction, combined with a graded exercise program, can gradually increase the body’s tolerance for activity. The increase in activity can help resolve depression and improve mental focus. An exercise program, especially water therapy, is often recommended. However, if the exercise is too vigorous and resistive or the patient pushes too hard, it can increase symptoms. Lack of movement also slows down the lymphatic system (which moves toxins out of the body). This can result in swelling, stiffness, weight gain and more pain. Sometimes patients experience a flare up and drop out of therapy, afraid to go any further. These ups and downs are part of the healing process. Understanding this and working through it with the guidance of an experienced therapist are the

keys to progress. A home program can help you maintain and improve even after therapy.

Anything Goes! GO BEYOND TRADITION AND USE YOUR GRILL FOR A MULTITUDE OF FOODS.
Each grilling season traditional cuisines, like hamburgers and hotdogs, rule the day. However, don’t forget that there are many other ways to liven up your grill. “While I love the summertime grill favorites as much as the next person, anything goes on the grill these days — from meatballs to pineapple to pancakes,” says Joan Hanson, test kitchen director for Hormel Foods. “It’s time to add some unexpected foods to your flame.” If you’re looking to expand your palate when it comes to grilling, look no further than the following tips: • Introduce bacon to the grill. Tradition states that bacon is typically a breakfast side. But what about other meals? No longer does bacon have to be cooked by itself on the stovetop or in the microwave. Bacon is fast becoming the unlikely go-to ingredient to pair with a variety of foods such as ice cream, chocolate and even alcohol. Instead, bring this savory trend to the grill this summer. It can make for a tasty accompaniment to any meal. • Think outside the (pizza) box. When pizza is on the menu, it’s sure to satisfy the whole family — especially when it’s cooked on the grill. To get that crisp

wood-fired taste, try pizza paninis — all you need are bread, pizza sauce, pepperoni slices, mozzarella cheese and any variety of meats and vegetables that fit each person’s tastes. You can even make a unique combination of barbecue chicken or pork with shredded meat, red onion and cheddar. Or, put out a variety of veggies, meats and cheese, and people can create their own personal pizza. • Import island flavors into your home. Bring home the love affair of the south seas and Hawaii with inspired cuisine, such as teriyaki and pineapple, which offer island-inspired flavors. Bacon-Wrapped Grilled Corn Remove husks and silk from corn. Rinse corn; pat dry. Cut each of 15 wooden picks in half. Use 1 wooden pick to secure first piece bacon at top of 1 ear corn; wrap bacon in spiral to center of corn. Place end of second piece bacon on top of end of first piece; secure with wooden pick. Continue wrapping second piece bacon around corn; fasten end with wooden pick. Repeat with remaining bacon and corn. Prepare grill for medium-hot coals. Coat bacon-wrapped corn with cooking spray. Grill corn, turning frequently, 5 to 10 minutes or until corn is golden brown and bacon is crisp.

DID YOU KNOW? According to an Ethiopian legend, the caffeinated power of coffee was discovered when a goat herder witnessed his goats’ energetic behavior after snacking on the berries of the coffee plant. He tried some for himself and felt the same buzz-like effects.

ORANGE-CRANBERRYWALNUT BREAD A quick bread that’s oh-so-tasty! Brought to you by Hermine’s Old World Confections. Ingredients • 2 C flour • 1 C sugar • 1/2 t salt • 1-1/2 t baking powder • 1/2 t baking soda • 1 orange • 2 T melted shortening • 1 egg • Dried cranberries, rejuvenated in boiling water, to make 1 C drained • 1 C chopped walnuts Perparation Combine flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and baking soda in mixing bowl. Grate the rind of the orange into a mixing cup, then squeeze the juice into the same cup, and finally add hot water to make 3/4 C total. In separate bowl, beat the egg, then add in shortening and the orange mixture. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry and mix well. Add in the cranberries and chopped walnuts.
Place batter in a greased and floured 9”x5” loaf pan and bake in preheated 325 degree oven. It’s done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 45 to 60 minutes. Carefully turn out onto a wire rack to cool. We have all experienced walking into a home or passing by a restaurant and taking in the smell of a particular food that leaves our mouth watering. Or as a child coming home after school to the smell of freshly baked cookies. Have you ever noticed how a particular scent can bring forth a rush of vivid memories? It is said that our sense of smell can trigger memories more than any other of the senses. Whether it was waking up to the smell of a turkey already in the roaster on Thanksgiving morning or the smell of freshly baked bread in the oven, it brings us back in time. This simple yet tasty recipe will have those in your home waiting for the timer to go off so they can experience that mouthwatering delicious taste of warm bread fresh out of the oven. Give it a try! You will be creating memories that will be triggered for years to come.

Fine Wine & Recreation Walla Walla, Washington. By Colin Anderson.
When you think of great American wines, California’s Sonoma and Napa Valleys are probably a couple that first come to mind and with good reason. Wines produced from these regions have gained notoriety around the world, winning awards when going up against centuries old wineries in France and Italy. But there is another region that’s beginning to earn that reputation, and it’s closer than you might think. The Walla Walla Valley is now home to more than 100 wineries and 1,800 acres of grapes. The first winery opened up in 1977 with several more in the early 1980s; and as word continues to spread about the unique growing conditions here, more and more vintners are taking root in Walla Walla. Walla Walla is the perfect backdrop for a romantic weekend, family reunion, girls’ trip or culinary exploration. The historic downtown is well-preserved with old-charm fused with fine dining and upscale shopping. Many of the regional wineries have also placed their tasting rooms in the downtown core, allowing you to sample many different vineyards without ever leaving downtown. For those who want to explore beyond the downtown, there are plenty of transportation services including private cars, shuttle buses and limos. And there are many options for wine tastings as well. You can find anything from small “mom and pop” outfits to waiting list only wine clubs. There are the come-asyou-are to appointment-only private tastings.
64
Most tasting rooms charge a $5 to $10 fee to sample several wines, and that fee is refundable with the purchase of a bottle. If you plan on stopping at more than a couple, hire a driver so you can enjoy the day and keep everybody safe. While tasting rooms are open year-round, there are a few big weekends where hotels and vacation rentals fill up fast. Spring Barrel release is May 1 to 3; Fall release is November 6 to 8 and Holiday Barrel tasting is December 4 to 6. Many visitors come just for the food and wine, but there is plenty else to offer in the way of outdoor activities. Blue Mountain Resort is a short drive away, offering skiing and tubing in the winter and great mountain biking, Frisbee golf and adventure courses in the summer. Cycling is big here, with miles of well-paved roads offering sweeping views of the valley. There are half a dozen golf courses within an hour drive, and both the Columbia and Snake River are close, offering fishing, boating and paddling opportunities. The historic Marcus Whitman Hotel is teeming with local history. There are also many galleries and museums to explore. Live music abounds with several local theaters and live music. This August, the Gentlemen of the Road Tour, featuring Foo Fighters and Mumford and Sons, makes a stop at Whitman College. If you’re into history, relaxation, good food and good wine, you’re bound to have a good time in Walla Walla. It’s a slower pace and most people
