PUBLISHER Make Lifelong Memories IT WAS NOT THAT LONG AGO that we were taking out the patio furniture from storage and planning our activities for the summer months. Suddenly we find ourselves facing back-to-school shopping, moving kids to college and wondering where the summer went. Take this month to truly get all you can out of the rest of summer. Plan gatherings with friends, take the kids on daytime excursions or even plan a long weekend to get away and enjoy the sunshine and outdoors. In the Pacific Northwest, we are so fortunate to have a multitude of opportunities around us. Beautiful mountains to hike, lakes and the Puget Sound to recreate and festivals to celebrate are just some of the activities in our own backyards. Do you enjoy music? Check out the concerts going on in our area. Enjoy a show by Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald at the Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville or one of the concerts at Sandpoint’s Festival at Sandpoint the first two weeks in August. There is something for everyone. If you have kids who love to explore, consider the Seattle Aquarium or the Woodland Park Zoo in the Seattle area or venture to Silverwood Theme Park just north of Coeur d’Alene. Take time to relax and enjoy life. The housework will still be there and the laundry may pile up a bit, but the memories you will make are something that will last forever.

YOUR MASTER BEDROOM

CREATE AN OASIS IN YOUR HOME

PEACE, TRANQUILITY, SERENITY ‌ these are words that make your shoulders relax, your eyelids heavy and have you picturing yourself in a quiet oasis. I imagine low lights, the smell of essential oils, my body the perfect temperature and in a state of relaxation in peaceful surroundings. This is also how your master bedroom should be; your oasis in your own home that you can escape to for some peace and quiet to shut the world out. To evoke this comfort, your bedroom should be painted in relaxing neutral colors. No bold energizing red, orange or bright yellows belong in the bedroom. Monotone colors are OK—use softened blues, greens and earth tones of tans and creams. Rule of thumb with decorating a bedroom: The headboard wall is usually the accent wall. If you are going to do any accent colors or hang artwork, vacation photos and so on, the headboard wall is where you want to do it.

INVEST IN A GOOD BED

Lighting needs to be ambient lighting with minimal task lighting, such as bedside lamps for reading. You should have easy control of lights so you don’t have to get up to turn them on or off. Dimmers are a good idea so you can control the level of lighting and the brightness in the room. No harsh textures. Glitter and polished shiny surfaces do not belong in the bedroom. Think of natural settings that bring you peace and incorporate those textures into your bedding, wall coverings, window coverings and flooring. If you have a hard surface in your bedroom such as wood or tile, use a large area rug. This rug should be alongside the bed so feet have a soft landing pad every morning. (This will also help with the acoustics.) Invest in a good bed. You spend a lot of time here. Make sure that it fits your body and provides the support and comfort that you need to get a good night’s sleep so you can awake feeling relaxed and energized. Scent also contributes to your emotional state.

Split bedroom floor plan. This home comes fully furnished! Walk in and begin relaxing in your new home. Set as Real Property.

Give your bedroom a fresh smell; no harsh perfumes or incense that linger in the air. Keep it clean and light—lavender, linen and rose are relaxing scents that aren’t too heavy. If your bedroom has a lot going on now, simplify. Declutter, clean and put away items. Minimize furniture and accessories. Laptops, televisions and phones are things we may look to when there is downtime and we are getting ready for bed. You start scrolling through and then realize two hours later that you are still no closer to being relaxed than you were when you started. Keep these items to a minimum in the bedroom. They tend to stimulate your mind and thus are counterproductive to you being able to relax. Most bedrooms should error on the side of being more masculine than feminine. By this, I mean don’t go over the top with lace, frilly layers of bedding, shams and pillows. By keeping things simple, clean, smelling good and low-key, you will be relaxing in no time.

HYPERTHERMIA KNOW THE SIGNS AND PROTECT YOUR FURRY FRIEND BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL, SANDPOINT

BE CAREFUL

SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE, and each year during July and August at North Idaho Animal Hospital, we treat patients suffering from heat exhaustion.

vehicle may increase by an average of 40 degrees Fahrenheit within one hour regardless of outside temperature! Bottom line: We can’t be too careful with our animal (and human!) companions.

Everyone understands the stress of direct sunlight on a furry dog or cat, and most folks are very careful not to over-exercise their pet (or themselves) in the middle of a summer day. However, we cannot emphasize enough the threat of a closed space—even with ventilation— on a warm day.

There are other conditions that can affect your pet’s sensitivity to heat. Bulldogs, and other short-faced canines, have very different breathing anatomy—their tracheas (windpipes) and airways are often reduced in diameter and become stressed easily by the heat. Panting alone can cause elevated body temperature! Obesity and other diseases can predispose a pet to hyperthermia.

Hyperthermia is life threatening and requires immediate treatment. A dog’s normal temperature ranges between 100 and 102 degrees; we consider anything higher than 104.5 degrees a true emergency. In a recent study from Stanford University Medical Center, researchers found that even on a relatively cool (70 degree) day, the temperature inside a

Hyperthermia signs Signs of hyperthermia can include panting, restlessness, salivation and staggering. As hyperthermia progresses, the gums may look purple or blue tinged. Pets become very distressed. Severe hyperthermia affects nearly every cell in the body. Organs that become too hot

(more than 105 degrees) can actually become jello-like and literally melt. Blood in the urine may also be a life-threatening sign. What to do A hyperthermic dog (or cat) should be placed in a cool area. Your pet’s temperature can be lowered by placing cool moist towels around their groin, armpits, paws, ear flaps and abdomen. Airflow, by using an electric fan, can also aid the lowering of the temperature. This will help immediately and can drop the temperature 1 degree or more. Then get your pet to your doctor! As stated above, the inner organs are very susceptible to hyperthermic damage. What not to do Cooling pets too fast can actually shrink the peripheral (outside) blood vessels and prevent the core blood from cooling. This means you should avoid extremely cold water or ice. Try to reduce your pet’s stress level as much as possible as you screech into your veterinary hospital’s parking lot. Obviously, the best possible solution to this issue is to avoid the situation all together. Thinking ahead and prevention is always the best cure.

Independent Spirit Serving Idaho communities has always been our first priority. Strong values, character and an independent spirit are the guiding principals that drive local, personal, and practical financial solutions. That’s why we are The Idaho Bank®.

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL

LIVE AFTER 5! The music comes alive each Wednesday in Downtown Coeur d’Alene. By Jillian Chandler

THIS SUMMER MARKS THE FIFTH YEAR for the summer outdoor music series Live After 5, and it’s been determined that its 2017 lineup is the best yet! Introduced by founders/owners Tyler Davis and his wife Ilke, there is no better way to spend a beautiful Wednesday evening outdoors than in beautiful Downtown Coeur d’Alene with family and friends at McEuen Park.

growing since its inception in 2013—now with an average of 1,300 concert goers each week—it had outgrown the space. McEuen Park is now home to Live After 5, and the music couldn’t be sweeter. The entertainment is combined with various food vendors and cold drinks— including beer from local breweries. Be sure to mark your calendar for the August and September acts, which include: Smash Hit Carnival (August 2), Sol Seed (August 9), The Ryan Larsen Band (August 16), Charlie Butts & The Filter Tips (August 23), Milonga (August 30) and The Powers (September 6).

“I wanted to create an event I would take my family to,” says Tyler, the visionary behind the event. He is proud that the weekly affair is a place where the community can come together with their children to grab dinner and listen—and dance—to great live musical performances. He adds: “I’m honored to have the opportunity to host a weekly celebration of Coeur d’Alene.”

Grab your lawn chairs, blankets and tents, and makes plans to attend at least one of these concerts during the beautiful, warm, sunny summer months. You will not be disappointed.

The 2017 mini music festival, which kicked off June 14, runs each Wednesday, 5 to 8pm, through September 6. Until this year, the music could be found on Sherman Avenue, but with the event continually

A life dedicated to creating and embracing cancer warriors.

R U S F YO

R O ST AS WE SIT DOWN FOR COFFEE and catch up for the first time in more than a year, Jim Morrison tells me he has another funeral to go to on Saturday. This will be the fourth this month with not even half the month gone. It’s become a reality for Jim as the more people he meets and connects with, the more of his newfound friends lose a battle that families in every corner of the nation are far too familiar with. “I feel obligated to these families and for my own self. I feel survivor’s guilt. But when you’re in a war there are going to be casualties, but just because there are casualties doesn’t mean you stop fighting,” he tells me. The reason for these feelings in Jim is the last 13 years of waking up to yet another sunrise he wasn’t supposed to see. January 4, 2004, Jim Morrison was given a 2 percent chance of survival and a diagnosis of six months to live. Upon returning from a hunting trip he felt an awful sickness in his chest and the diagnosis was stage 4 lung cancer, despite the fact Jim was not a smoker. Like everyone who receives a death sentence, Jim was devastated, but the thought of death quickly washed away from his thoughts; he was going to survive this. Jim began putting goals in front him, the first being to walk his daughter down the aisle despite the wedding date being set past his life expectancy. When the idea of moving the wedding date came up, Jim told her absolutely not and months later found the strength to stand and escort his daughter on the most important day of her life.

As Jim’s battle with lung cancer continued, he went through tremendously debilitating bouts of chemotherapy, and for a long time the only thing he could keep down and subsist on was little bits of water and gummy bears. What he never did along the way was quit. Jim had horrible days just like every other terminal cancer patient but was determined not to focus on the statistics but rather his own preservation. Fast forward to 2017 and Jim Morrison is alive. He has twice-a-year checkups, but in the past decade, there has been no sign of the cancer that was supposed to put him in the ground before the end of 2005. He credits three ‘f ’ words for keeping him alive: faith, family and facilities. Jim’s diagnosis changed his outlook on life and his life’s mission forever. Gone are the days of caring about trivial matters, possessions and not being honest with one’s self. Today, tomorrow and each day he continues to live is about sharing his story of survival and creating an army of cancer warriors. “I’m a workaholic and this is my new career. If God spared me for a reason, it wasn’t to screw around with the rest of my life, and the best reason to live is to help others,” says Jim. Jim’s other unexpected career is that of an author. He chose to write his first book, “To See Another Sunrise,” in order that he might inspire others who receive a cancer diagnosis. The book is brutally honest, and Jim leaves very little off the table about the man he was before, during and after his cancer. Anyone who has met or listened to Jim can attest that this brand

of honesty is never leaving this man. As Jim meets weekly with those battling cancer, he is not there for comforting “it’s gonna be ok” phrases; Jim is in attack mode. “I’m in reality mode,” he says. “Sweet talking people doesn’t help anybody, and some people don’t like that. You’d be shocked at how many people just roll over and quit.” These days Jim says he doesn’t have time for people who just want others to feel sorry for themselves about their cancer. “As soon as they get the diagnosis, they think death, my card has been pulled, and they quit. My philosophy is that life starts with cancer, it doesn’t end. The priorities you should be pursuing come to light with a diagnosis.” Jim lives and does most of his visits in North Idaho and Eastern Washington, but as his book has found its way into the hands of people all over the country, so has Jim. He’s been a keynote speaker at symposiums and summits, and has visited patients in hospitals all over. He’s recently given his presentation in New York, Washington, D.C., Colorado and North Carolina, as well as completing a five church tour across British Columbia. “I look forward to any opportunity to share a book and hear a story. It’s amazing the amount of people across the country the past few years that have reached out to me. I can tell you that I don’t think there’s a county in the U.S. that doesn’t have cancer in it,” Jim says.

When being vetted for speaking engagements, Jim is often asked about his presentation and style. He’s been taken out of contention for some engagements because organizers felt his message wasn’t sympathetic enough. Despite that, Jim’s message isn’t changing. He continues to look at cancer as a war between the disease and the person, and if that person isn’t ready to fight for everything they hold dear, the disease is going to win out.

Since gaining regional and national attention from his first book, Jim has encountered an amazing array of stories. As he gathered these experiences, he knew it was time to once again share his experiences, although this time the focus would be on the people he’s met. “Cancer - My Rainbow in the Dark” is a collection of these stories. In it are tales of unbelievable acts of courage and survival as well as low points of family members leaving their cancer warrior in the middle of their battle. It maintains Jim’s

more than six months, and with a combination of his personal faith, a supportive family and an incredible team of doctors and cancer facilities, he is cancer free. audeville has been deemed “Variety Entertainment,” the “Voice of the City” and “The Heart of American Show Business.” These variety shows enjoyed huge popularity for decades in North America. The “acts” included everything from one-act plays, comedians, musicians, singers, jugglers, magicians and burlesque dancers; even some short films. These multifaceted shows were a feast for the eyes and enlightenment for the souls of its audiences. Alas, all things have their time and by the 1910s the death-blow decline in vaudevillian shows came in the form of lower-priced cinema.

building, and until the loan was paid in full they were not allowed to produce any show that contained alcohol consumption. The original Summer Theater shared the stage until North Idaho College completed construction of the beautiful Boswell Hall. Lake City Playhouse has even had their share of celebrities grace the stage and seats of its little theater. Ellen Travolta, Jack Bannon, Cheyenne Jackson, Patty Duke, Bobby Sherman and David Soul have enjoyed some time at the playhouse. No theater would be complete without a good little ghost tale either. Rumor has it, there is a fellow named George who also likes this little haunt as well.

Many vaudeville performers traveled the circuits; a chain of allied vaudeville houses that contracted acts for regional and national tours. Our beautiful gem state still houses a few of these brilliant theatres. The Historic Wilson Theatre in Rupert, Idaho, The Egyptian Theatre in Boise and our beloved Panida Theater in Sandpoint, are all beautiful examples of the glory days of the variety show.

Another arts avenue we have in the spring is the 50 Hour Slam: an annual film competition and festival open to all filmmakers in the Spokane and North Idaho areas. Filmmakers have exactly 50 hours to complete a three- to six-minute movie: beginning with the writing and development to the final editing stage. Competitors are encouraged to experiment, get creative and push their talents to the limit to create a unique and entertaining piece for their entry. This is my third year competing and let me tell you, it is a blast!

The Panida Theater was built in 1927 by F.C. Weskil for the sum of $70,000. The Spanish Mission-style structure was the first building in Sandpoint to be constructed completely of reinforced concrete. Mr. Weskil dedicated this stucco beauty to the people of the Idaho Panhandle, hence the name “Pan-Ida,” Panida. He wanted a venue to showcase film and vaudeville acts with great entertainers and performances of the day. His dream is still alive and well.

Art on the Green is a beloved local yearly event that takes place at the Old Fort Sherman Grounds on the North Idaho College Campus in early August. It is an outdoor arts and crafts festival sponsored by Citizens’ Council for the Arts. It hosts a juried art show, musical performances, dance performances, great food and drink, an arts and crafts market, a giant sand castle and even a place for your little budding artist to experiment with paint and clay. Art on the Green has been a staple in my family’s summer for a couple of decades now.

Today, this charming historic theater still emulates the spirit of vaudeville. The Panida hosts local talent as well as those touring their arts. Center stage has held the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Arlo Guthrie, Winton Marsalis and Viggo Mortensen. The crimsoncolored grand drape accents plays, films, dance recitals, festivals and concerts. You can also rent the community owned theater for your very own special event. “Inspiring cultural enrichment, education and entertainment through the arts for all generations” is Panida’s mission.

Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre and the Christian Youth Theater hold performances at the state-of-the-art Kroc Center, a more recent addition our area can take pride in. The Schuler Performing Arts Center in Boswell Hall on the NIC campus also holds various performances throughout the year. Both locales are large, beautiful, modern and perfect for larger productions. We also have several other wonderful venues scattered between Spokane and Sandpoint: The Magic Lantern, Spokane Civic Theatre, The Blue Door Theatre, Martin Woldson Theatre at The Fox, The Bing Crosby Theater and INB Performing Arts Center. I have had the good fortune of being able to visit all of these magical odea, and I encourage you to partake and support your arts community by doing the same.

Our arts community is growing every day. We have many venues and festivals to nurture the arts in our lives. The Lake City Playhouse is one of my favorite places to enjoy a show. LCP was constructed in the late 1940s using building materials taken from the old officers’ mess at Farragut. It was originally used as a Mormon church. In the 1960s, the Coeur d’Alene Community Theater purchased the

Even though our region does have some pretty spectacular places for the arts to flourish, there is always room to grow. That growth will occur only through the acknowledgement that art, in whatever form it takes, is vital to our lives. Whether we relish a painting or a performance, art gives us something to ponder. You can show your support for the arts just by attending a local theater performance, event or festival; a great way to start and get involved. You can also volunteer or audition, become a participant, engage in your community. Back in the ‘90s, I was cast in Arsenic and Old Lace at the Panida, and due to the lack of a male actor to play the lead, that play had to be canceled. It was an unfortunate loss of entertainment and growth all due to just one person not being willing to step out and do something different. No matter if you are in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene or Sandpoint, there is a place for you to be a part of the show. The spirit of the vaudevillian is alive and well here in the great Northwest. The variety we cultivate, from Shakespeare to Gypsy Rose Lee, is something to be cherished, nourished and promoted. Variety is the spice of life after all! Our lovely Panida Theater does that with all the grace of the bygone days in which it was built. Art is the way we connect, communicate and discover all the beauty this world holds. Picasso was quoted as saying, “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” Perhaps art is not only a cleansing but the very meaning of life itself. Creation is the breath of art. All of the world may be a stage, but it’s nice to know we have a little theater right here in our own backyard to gather and revel in that vaudeville sparkle.

IF YOU ARE AN ADVENTURE seeker and enjoy spending time outdoors amidst nature and all of its beauty, Timberline Adventures is beckoning you. Owners Paul and Ashley Buttars opened their zip-line business, which provides a first-class canopy experience, in June 2015. In 2013, while searching for a location to house their future business, Paul and Ashley were interested in a few locations in the Western United States to build their canopy tour. Once they made the stop to explore the Coeur d’Alene area, the pair fell in love and knew they had found the perfect location. The couple relocated to Coeur d’Alene that year. “We always thought we wanted to end up in Utah, as that is where all our family is, but since moving here we have no desire to ever leave!” says Ashley. The course, located just above Beauty Bay, offers spectacular views. Guests are escorted by van from Timberline’s downtown office location and taken to the zip-line property. Once on site, participants are driven a mile up an old logging road in a UTV to begin the course. Designed to be enjoyed by kids as young as 7 and as old as 107, Paul, Ashley and their staff strive to give everyone who comes to Timberline a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “You cannot beat looking out over Lake Coeur d’Alene while flying through the treetops for two hours,” says Ashley. At Timberline Adventures, all of their lines are in the trees, rather than poles. The tour includes seven lines that range in length from

400 to 1,600 feet and 50 to 400 feet in height. It includes three suspension bridges and a rappel. “Another thing that we are really excited about is a treehouse that we had built on the property,” says Paul. “It’s been a long time coming, and we are very excited to soon be able to include the tree house as part of our tour!” In addition, a unique part of the tour is the long bridge out to their 300-year-old ponderosa pine. The bridge starts out at ground level, and after walking close to 150 feet, you end up 80 feet high in the tree! When it comes to what they find most rewarding in their line of work, it is giving people an unparalleled experience. From the 92-year-old celebrating his birthday and marriage engagements, to those overcoming their fear of heights or coming after battling illnesses, Paul says they hear many inspiring stories from their guests. He adds, “For them to come spend their time, money and stories with us is extremely humbling.” Paul and Ashley credit numerous people who have helped make their dream a reality—and a success! Having been in the industry for several years, they hired the best guys in the business to build the course, namely Jason Lindsey. Timberline Adventures’ office manager, Holly Parson, is a great asset who works well with their customers, always with a smile on her face and doing all she can to accommodate everyone who walks through the door. And just as important as the previous two are their guides. As the face of the company, they make the experience all that it is. “We are blessed that we have such a great group of young

adults working with us and really showing our customers a great time,” affirms Paul. In addition to providing local and visitors alike an adventure of a lifetime, Paul and Ashley support area youth groups, schools, businesses and charities through donations, always trying to give as much as they can to an array of different organizations. Timberline Adventures is open late-May to Halloween. Paul, Ashley and the Timberline staff look forward to hosting your next big adventure.

o see the younger generation stepping up to make a change for the better in their communities is awe-inspiring, and when you discover a sixth-grader out of Post Falls is creating an application that will positively affect people around the world, it hits that much closer to home. Alex Knoll has made his community proud. The 12-year-old has fashioned a prototype for the “Ability App,” a phone application specially designed to help those with disabilities. According to Alex’s GoFundMe page, “The goal of Ability App is to improve the lives of all people with disabilities by giving them the resources to make informed decisions. Ability App will help people with disabilities and their caregivers navigate public spaces and find services and employment opportunities.”

One may wonder how he came up with this incredible idea. According to Alex, “It all started when I saw a man in a wheelchair, and he couldn’t open a manual door. So I wondered if there was an app that could have told him what other stores around the area had automatic doors. So that day I went home to do some research and I couldn’t find anything like Ability App—so I created it.” From disability friendly features including wheelchair ramps and wheelchair friendly restaurants, Braille signs and menus, serviceanimal relief locations and more, this free app, or website, will make those with disabilities able to navigate public spaces safely and easily. Alex has already gained state and national recognition, and he was named the National Grand Champion for I Cubed—a national

Still needing funding to develop the app, and with a goal set to raise $25,000, Ellen presented Alex with a check for that exact amount, donated by Shutterfly. To say he was excited to appear on the show and meet Ellen is an understatement, but the real excitement is in knowing that this

Certified to teach in all 50 states, Odegaard is an

TRUCKING NOT JUST A JOB—IT’S A LIFESTYLE

instructor in North Idaho College’s commercial drivers license training program, based out of the Workforce Training Center.

NEW TECHNOLOGY IN FIELD PUTS SAFETY FIRST

DOUG ODEGAARD NEVER pictured himself as anything but a truck driver. After 37 years of experience as a driver, he’s driven just about every vehicle imaginable—long haul, mixers, logging trucks, chip trucks and more. After experiencing an accident himself, Odegaard is passionate about safety on the roads. He became a certified commercial truck driver instructor and continues to emphasize safe driving in all of his classes.

BY KAYE THORNBRUGH

“Safety comes first,” he said. “Trucking equipment has kept up with the times and is light years ahead of where it was just a decade ago. Cameras, antilock braking systems, lane departure warnings; all of these emerging technologies are designed to keep truckers— and everyone on the road around them—safe.” Certified to teach in all 50 states, Odegaard is an instructor in North Idaho College’s commercial drivers license training program, based out of the Workforce Training Center. NIC CDL INSTRUCTOR DOUG ODEGAARD WITH ONE OF THE TRUCKS IN NIC’S FLEET. PHOTO BY TOM GREENE

“When it comes to the North Idaho College program, your options are unlimited,” he said. “We can train you for class A or B, we can get you prepared for long-hauling or local—pretty much anything you want. The options are wide open.” NIC also offers a CDL Class A refresher course for drivers who have a Class A license but have been off the road and would like to sharpen their skills. Because the industry is experiencing a labor shortage, Odegaard said that now is an ideal time to consider a career in driving. There are approximately 148,000 current driver openings nationally, according

CDALivingLocal.com

35

to the American Trucking Organization, with 890,000 total driver openings forecast through 2025. “There’s a huge driver shortage,” Odegaard said. “Right now, we’re 60 percent of where we need to be. If this continues, you’re going to go to the store to buy a loaf of bread and it’ll cost you $12 because they only got one load that week.” Odegaard theorized that the shortage is related to negative perceptions of truck drivers—a stereotype, he said, that’s out of date. “People just don’t think about driving a truck,” he said. “They watch these shows on TV, like Ice Road Truckers, but that’s all make-believe. The pay scale has gone way up, and the equipment is unbelievably nice.” The median hourly wage for heavy and tractortrailer truck drivers is $19.36, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Self-motivated individuals are well-suited to truck driving, Odegaard said. These days, many companies can accommodate the lifestyle of drivers who need to see their families regularly. However, truck driving as a career still means making a commitment to being on the road. “It’s a lifestyle, not just a job,” he said. Odegaard takes pride in going “above and beyond” with his students. He wants to make sure his students are fully prepared to work safely for anyone and get the job done. For more information on these classes taught through the NIC Workforce Training Center, contact 208.769.3333 or NIC.edu/wtc.

Just Breathe By Susan Moore

WHEN SOMEONE COMES INTO MY TRAINING facility for the first time, it can be for a number of reasons. They may have a specific goal to train for or they are unhappy in one or more ways with the current status quo of their life. They don’t like the way they perform, feel, behave, move, look or any number of issues, whether real or imaginary. Stress, work, school, life, have somehow gotten in their way of their performance or the quality of life they are seeking, and are looking to me for guidance. I get to see the initial change for the better they find on day one, and all I do is re-teach them how to … breathe; how to take in and release the air around them in a way that reduces stress, pain, fear and discomfort and increases health and happiness. I literally have the best job on the planet.

We’ll first talk about the opposite ends of the breathing spectrum. We have on one side clavicular (or shallow) breathing and on the other side we have diaphragmatic (or abdominal) breathing. The easiest way to tell is when you breathe in, do your shoulders rise while your stomach draws into your body or does your stomach expand with your inhale and draw in when you exhale with your shoulders remaining relaxed? If you typically practice the latter, you are in luck. Your breathing is great, and keep up the good work. You probably breathe purposefully and maybe even spend some well-deserved time meditating. On the other hand, if you can’t seem to figure out how to keep your shoulders from rising upon inhale, you may have some work to do.

So why should you care how deeply you breathe? Clavicular breathing draws only minimal oxygen into the lungs and can lead to a buildup of carbon dioxide. Many breathing and stress issues are exacerbated by this type of breathing. The diaphragm is closely connected to your sympathetic nervous system, which controls our fight or flight response. The shallower we breathe the more anxious and unsettled we become, and this takes a toll on our ability to adapt to stress and remain healthy. The longer we are in this state of habitual shallow breathing, the harder it becomes to breathe deep. All it takes is some daily practice to combat and reverse this cycle.

Diaphragmatic breathing is one our strongest selfhealing mechanisms. Diaphragmatic breathing is one of our strongest self-healing mechanisms. It draws oxygen lower into the lungs which activates the parasympathetic nervous system (relax and recover). According to the Mayo Clinic, benefits of deep breathing include but are not limited to: relieving physical muscle tension, increase oxygen to all cells, strengthens the lungs, slows our heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood flow to muscles and improves concentration. Taking time to breathe deeply and purposefully can easily be done within your daily life. It doesn’t have

to be done on its own. We can easily practice while driving (reducing road rage), brushing your teeth, bathing, before sleep or anytime talking is not necessary. Everyone has time to practice breathing. I can’t personally think of a downside. Now the how. If you have been shallow breathing for long enough, regaining the ability to breathe deeply will not be as automatic as you may think. If you have a few minutes, try lying on your back with one hand on your chest and one hand on your stomach. Breathe in what you currently consider deep and see which of your hands moves the most. Now try and exhale at least a little bit deeper than you inhaled. Keep that up, trying each time to fill the belly with air while inhaling and contracting your abdominal muscles while exhaling, remembering to exhale a little more than you inhaled. This may prove to be difficult at first, but keep practicing. Eventually you should be able to relax your chest and breathe from the belly. Once it becomes easier, you can spend more practice time during your showers and car rides. You may decide to set aside some “me” time and just breathe. This is when life begins to get … better.

HOW LOUD IS TOO LOUD?

Sushi · Seafood Fish & Chips Smoked Fish Open Monday - Saturday 11:00am - 8:00pm

EARPLUGS ARE AN IMPORTANT SUMMER ACCESSORY BY DEANNA IFF, AU.D., CCC-A WRITTEN FOR HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY WE LIVE IN A NOISY WORLD. While everyone knows that earplugs should be worn in loud environments, we often overlook the hazardous levels of noise that can be present during common activities. In this short article, we will cover some of the dangerous sounds you should be considering, the potential consequences of noise exposure and how to protect your ears from serious damage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 40 million Americans between the ages of 20 and 69 have noise-induced hearing loss. We often associate this type of hearing loss with occupational exposure, but of those 40 million, more than one in two do not have noisy jobs. And although the percentage of the population affected by hearing loss increases with age, the young are not immune. More than 5 million individuals between the ages of 6 and 19 are also experiencing hearing loss related to noise exposure. Loud noise causes hearing loss by damaging the hair cells in your inner ear. So named because of the little hairs (cilia) that move in response to sound, hair cells are responsible for sensing sound and converting that sound into electrical signals, which in turn are sent to the brain. Hair cells cannot regenerate, so damage to these cells leads to permanent hearing loss. So, when does noise become dangerously loud? The loudness of a sound is measured in decibels (dB). Noise-induced hearing loss can be caused by exposure to noise over 85 dB for an extended period. Although most of us do not have access to a professional sound-level meter, there are apps available for download that can give you a good idea of the noise level.

Below are the approximate dB levels of some common sounds: • 60 dB - Normal conversations, dishwashers • 80 dB - Alarm clocks • 90 dB - Hair dryers, blenders and lawnmowers/leaf blowers • 100 dB - MP3 players at full volume • 110 dB - Concerts, clubs, car racing and sporting events (hearing loss can occur in less than five minutes at this level) • 120 dB - Jet planes at takeoff • 130 dB - Ambulances and fire engine sirens • 140 dB - Gun shots, fireworks and custom car stereos at full volume

Take home some of our Market FRESH FISH for dinner tonight!

It is important to note that hearing loss can occur with very limited exposure to the loudest of these sounds. If you’d prefer to avoid the hassle of using a sound level meter to determine whether noise is endangering your hearing, here are some simple rules. In general, noise is dangerously loud if: • • • •

You have to shout to be heard It is painful to your ears It makes your ears ring It makes your hearing seem muffled

Protecting your ears does not have to be an ordeal. For most typical noise exposure, standard foam earplugs are sufficient, if inserted properly. If you spend more time around high levels of noise, you may want to consider investing in custom earplugs, which can be made for almost any type of exposure. For any questions about hearing protection, please consult your local audiologist!

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT VS IMMEDIATE CARE CLINIC GUIDELINES TO MAKING THE RIGHT DECISION BY BONNER GENERAL HEALTH

WHHEEA RL E TSH HO Y UTL IDP I G O ?

“SHOULD I GO TO the emergency room or to immediate care?” This is a question many people ask when they are injured, ill or have a family member who needs medical treatment. With summer upon us, people are more active, and we are experiencing some extreme heat. Both are factors that can lead to increased injuries. It is important to choose the right level of care. The Emergency Department is the right choice if you or a family member is experiencing a life-threatening illness or injury. You will want to go to the Emergency Department to treat: • Difficulty breathing • Any symptoms of stroke: face drooping, slurred speech, arm weakness, sudden vision trouble or sudden trouble understanding simple statements • A major burn • Persistent chest pain that radiates to your arm or jaw that may also include sweating, vomiting or shortness of breath • Severe head injury • Coughing or vomiting blood • Severe pain in your chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure • Pregnancy complications if you are

Head injury Significant bone or soft-tissue injuries High, persistent fever (38.5°C or 100.4°F) Persistent vomiting and/or diarrhea Significant lack of fluid intake (especially in a younger child) • Significant changes in the child’s activity level. Call 911 if moving the injured or ill person will worsen their condition, if medical attention is needed sooner than the time it takes to get the Emergency Department or if you are not able to safely transport the person to the Emergency Department. If possible, bring a list of medications and/or allergies for the patient. This can help the medical staff at the Emergency Department provide the best possible care. KITCHEN ESSENTIALS By Jillian Chandler

F

or those who enjoy spending hours in the kitchen, cooking up feasts for their loved ones, it is ideal to have a kitchen space that is simplistic yet functional, accompanied by the proper, easy-to-use kitchen tools. Here’s a list of great kitchen gadgets that the at-home

chef should invest in, making food preparation easier and faster, allowing for more time to spend with family and friends around the table to enjoy a great meal.

Meat Thermometer Different meats require different internal temperatures to determine if they’re done and ready to eat! This can be difficult to determine if you don’t have a proper meat thermometer. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a useful tool to make cooking steaks, burgers, chicken, seafood and pork to the perfect temps. You can purchase a simple—yet accurate and affordable—thermometer, such as the Taylor Dial Pocket Thermometer, for as little as $5. If you’re into the high-tech gadgets, check out the new Thermapen Mk4. You can spend close to $100 for this advanced thermometer, but it takes the internal temperature in just two to three seconds, with the display rotating right-side up so you can read it in any position!

Microplane Microplane graters are ideal for zesting fruits like limes and oranges and work great when grating various food items such as ginger and nutmeg to garlic and cheeses. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, allowing shoppers to find the one that fits their style best. Most are priced less than $15, making it not only a useful but affordable kitchen aid in any home. From the ergonomically designed Microplane Soft-Handle Fine Grater for $9.95 to the new Microplane Fine Rotary Grater with its renowned etched technology offering a razor-sharp blade that turns hard cheeses into wispy fine slivers for $17.95, any dish can be turned into a piece of art with the added touches this appliance offers.

vitamix These have been all the craze for the past decade or so—and have been a staple in restaurant kitchens for decades—but with a high price tag, this item can seem more of a luxury than a kitchen necessity. The truth is … your life will never be the same. From hot soups and baby food, flours and dough, nut butters, frozen desserts, batters, dressings, sauces, dips and spreads, to non-dairy milks, smoothies and juices, the Vitamix is the ultimate solution. The Vitamix can even mince garlic, chop carrots, shred potatoes and grate hard cheeses! For this top-of-the-line “blender,” be prepared to spend anywhere from around $250 to $750. But remember, you’ll be happy you did.

quality KNIVES There’s nothing as frustrating as going to dice up that tomato for your summer salad and your beautiful tomato ends up a squashed mess. Knives are essential in the kitchen, and as one of the most used items, it’s worth the investment to buy good quality knives. You don’t have to break the budget to find a superior knife set that will get the job done. In the end, it will save you time, frustration and money. Want a knife that will allow that crisp, precise cut? Sorry, that $35 set just won’t do. Instead, a good starting point would be a Wüsthof knife set, which you can find in the low $100 range. Though they can seem a little clunky, these knives will get the job done at an affordable price.

Spaghetti MEASURE If you enjoy making pasta dishes and you haven’t yet heard of—or purchased—a spaghetti measure, you’re in for a surprise! This kitchen tool is designed to scale uncooked pasta portions accurately; very important for the summer months while many are trying to control their food intake. The Joseph Joseph Spaghetti Measure is a compact measurer with adjustable portion guide with a lever that glides along the side of a disc to accurately measure pasta from one to four servings. It can be found for as low as $10, depending on color choice. Al-De-Chef 's plastic spaghetti measure has a simpler design, with four separate holes along a flat surface, ranging from one serving to four, and can be found for less than $4. Strand long pastas such as spaghetti, linguine and fettuccine.

It’s Easy!

et me start by saying, on any given day, you can cook like a chef.

I am a chef. I am a husband and father. I am an American worker. At home we cut coupons and plan family meals. We look for the about-to-be-out-of-date meat deals at the grocery store because we know that everything is fine and it’s fill the freezer time. We do the enormous once-a-month pay day “it’s time to load the SUV and maybe get some gas credits at the local mega outlet where everything comes in tubs, eight packs or sacks that you actually, for once, do need help out to the car with, yes and thank you.” In our family repertoire, we have the good ol’ standards that get us through things like soccer practice, swim class, school functions or the not so occasional “dad has to work at the restaurant late tonight” type situations. This is our modern family life.

they are soft. I found some random things in the pantry cabinet to complete this gourmet meal. While the peppers and onions are wilting away, start cooking some white rice. To the cast-iron pan, add garlic and chili powder (add two tablespoons of tomato paste if you have it). Blend blackened tomatoes in blender or food processor and add to the pan. Shred chicken and add that. Simmer and reduce until rich and saucy. Squeeze in lime juice and salt to taste. On a plate, place rice to one side, ladle your culinary magic over half of the rice allowing it to spill onto the plate and garnish with cheese, tortillas, cilantro and lime wedge. (I didn’t have these last items but hey, it was still good!) There are some basic items to keep around the

Now … fast forward, or back, to that situation, chef or not, where you have opened, closed and re-opened the refrigerator door at least 500 times, staring at your depleting inventory wondering, “What am I going to do for dinner tonight, to … to … WOW everyone?” To not have the peanut gallery basically yelp you into another chili-mac-a-tuna-saurus monstrosity that ends up more in the disposal than in their little Siskel and Ebert stomachs. I’m here to help. You have enough “stuff ” in your arsenal at all times to make amazing meals, but you forget your inventory. And I do too. Here is a personal example of our weekly family dinner that I have not yet organized. In the tall, cold rectangle box that houses random items, I found: parts of a beautifully cooked and left-to-die chicken, a wilting red pepper that was probably supposed to be the star of some kind of unknown greatness, an onion that is starting to grow and some horrible winter tomatoes that should not have been in refrigeration in the first place—or even ever grown for that matter—but there they are. Oh … and a lime. I keep those around because I enjoy limes. By limes, I mean tequila. So here is what I did in a recipe format. Oven cranked to 500°F. Cut tomatoes in half, place on a pan and put in oven until blackened. Cut open and remove all seeds and ribs (white-ish part) of the red pepper and cut it onto strips like french fries. Cut the onion in the same manner. (We call that cut julienne, cool to know, but doesn’t change the flavor.) Throw them into a medium hot cast-iron pan with a little butter or oil until

kitchen that will allow you to create meals at a moment’s notice; things like potatoes, rice, garlic, soy sauce and chili powder. I like to keep fennel seeds. If you quickly toast them in a pan you can take breakfast potatoes to a whole new level. Here is a basic recipe for a side dish that will transform your dinner table into a restaurant. • 3 large russet potatoes baked and cooled just enough to be able to handle them. • 1.5-ish cups of flour • 1 egg • 2 teaspoons salt Peel the potatoes and run them through a ricer (food mill). Beat egg and salt together. On a cutting board, spread out potatoes and mix in egg. Work in flour and knead with your hands adding flour until you have a dough-like consistency. This should be about three minutes. With your hands, roll out

ropes that are about a half-inch thick. Cut ropes into one-inch sections. Slightly press an indentation with your thumb into each piece. In a pot of lightly boiling salted water, drop in gnocchi—believe it or not, that’s what you just made—a few at a time. They are done when they float to the top. In a hot pan, add a quarter stick of butter. Let it brown a little. Add gnocchi and sauté until lightly browned. Add freshly chopped sage, salt and pepper to taste. Finish with parmesan cheese. This is an easy and great side dish to any meal that will turn basic things like roasted chicken with sautéed zucchini into a plate you would see in your favorite restaurant. Try your gnocchi with a cream sauce or a marinara to mix things up. Remember, it’s just food. Have fun!

TRAVEL & LEISURE

PERFECTION REFINED: Latest evolution of the ideal Northwest getaway Article and photos by Dan Aznoff

IF YOU WERE GIVEN the opportunity to design the ultimate vacation destination in Washington, you’d start with a romantic point of waterfront tucked into the Northwest corner of the state surrounded on three sides by the pristine waters of the Puget Sound with inspirational sunsets to the west and views of a majestic Cascade peak that dominate the horizon to the east. Your resort would have a casual atmosphere with dining options that range from fine bistros to casual eateries. Between meals, guests could divide their time between water sports, the challenge of seaside golf courses and the indulgences of a world-class spa. Your slice of perfection would have easy access to beachfront trails that twist past mountains of bleached driftwood with access to tide pools teeming with life from the sea. The beach would be within walking distance from a dense forest that offers shade from the sun and cover for the small

animals that live under the canopy of the tall evergreens. Once you’ve found the ideal location created by nature, you could add some of the best man-made enhancements that make every adventure a memorable experience, like a charming little town with quaint restaurants and retail shops filled with the usual trinkets and distinctive clothing. And of course, there would be restaurants that reflect the heritage of the community. The good news for individuals who are more doers than planners, this ideal holiday retreat already exists. It is the oftenoverlooked destination of Semiahmoo near Blaine. Located on the Washington coast just 90 miles north of Seattle and 40 miles south of Vancouver in British Columbia, the Semiahmoo Resort features award-winning dining, an outdoor pool, full-service spa, two award-winning golf courses and access to a myriad of outdoor activities.

The destination is just the right distance away for a romantic weekend getaway. The golf courses and spa make it an ideal location for an important business conference that does not exclude spouses. The beaches and forest make it a great place for an extended vacation with children. And the pet-friendly facilities make the resort a place the entire family can enjoy. The Semiahmoo Resort was built inside the historic low-profile structure that was once the world’s largest salmon cannery. It sits on 1,100 acres of a long sandy spit near the Canada–U.S. border. The resort takes its name from the name of the indigenous people in whose language means “halfmoon,” which describes the crescent-shaped land the resort was built on. The destination opened as the ultimate golf getaway in 1994 as home to the Loomis Trail Golf Club and Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club. The latter was designed by Arnold Palmer and was voted the sixth best golf course in Washington state by Golfweek in 2011. For some reason, the original hotel, restaurants and spa closed in December of 2012. The property was purchased one year later by a hotel group from Seattle who reopened in August of 2013 after $6 million in renovations. The upscale resort now has 183 deluxe air-conditioned guest rooms plus 28 luxury suites. The dining options at Semiahmoo cater to almost every palate, including snack bars on the golf course and inside the spa. The Packers Oyster Bar behind the hotel offers casual waterfront dining and an exceptional happy hour. The Pierside Kitchen offers choices that highlight fresh seafood from the waters of the Puget Sound and produce from farms in the nearby Skagit Valley. The Great Blue Heron Grill offers cuisine in an elegant atmosphere that is appropriate for a quick burger or a romantic date-night dinner. For the adventurous types, the hotel has bikes, kayaks and paddleboards available for rent. For those who enjoy activities on the sand, there is beach volleyball, sandcastle building and a nightly gathering around

a fire pit where the resort provides all the ingredients to build the perfect s’more. Whether or not you have a sweet tooth, the seats around the fire pit offer exceptional views across the water of the armada of sailboats and yachts that troll the international waters and across to the shops and homes in the Canadian town of White Rock. Semiahmoo Spit offers more than 300 acres of tideland and roughly 1.5 miles of trails ideal for walking, biking and birdwatching. The region’s tide pools, estuaries and waterways attract thousands of geese, ducks, gulls, loons and shorebirds each year and recently made the Audubon Society’s list as one of Washington’s top birding destinations. It attracts a thriving population of endangered species including the bald eagle, peregrine falcon and the marbled murrelet.

Point Whitethorns Marine Reserve and Blaine Marine Park are both located just a few clicks from the front door of the resort. Both offer waterfront experiences worth the price of admission. The first ½ mile of forest trail at Whitehorn is wheelchair accessible and takes visitors past twisted stumps and specimens of native growth forest. The beach itself is strewn with heaps of driftwood and makeshift shelters built around fire pits. Lucky visitors to the beach can get up-close views of the seals that feast off the fish in the waters that lead into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. If you’re quiet (and really lucky), you can see bald eagles positioned on top of the tallest old trees as they watch over the beach for signs of migrating salmon. The eagles can be seen in mid-air battles with crows as the rivals compete for the highest perches on the oldest trees.

between the Blaine Harbor marina and Semiahmoo Spit. Built in 1944, the ferry was originally used to transport workers to and from the cannery at Semiahmoo. The 20-passenger ferry provides a great vantage point to watch the eagles soar and seals frolic in their own backyard. The ride also provides close encounters with majestic pleasure craft that anchor in the harbor of White Rock on the Canadian side of the waterway. Space is almost always made to accommodate bikers or passengers who walk on for the short ride from Blaine back to the resort. The ferry departs on the hour from the Blaine Visitor’s Dock and returns on the half hour from the Plover Dock at Resort Semiahmoo. The floating piece of history operates during the summer months, beginning Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, including on the Fourth of July.

The pristine beach gives no clue of the history of the reserve. The shoreline was originally an unattractive piece of seashore that was held, but not developed, by the Whatcom Land Trust (WTL) until an oil spill from a Bellingham refinery in 1999 dumped thousands of gallons of thick oil on the beach. The WTL used fines levied against the oil companies to purchase .3 miles of the Georgia Strait wetlands from BC Hydro that was developed to become Whatcom County Park. That purchase was leveraged to fund access to the beaches and protect the shoreline from future environmental damage.

gluten-free options for breakfast or lunch, while Bob’s Burgers & Brew earns its top spot on every review of restaurants in Blaine for its grass-fed beef and scores of ice cold beer on tap. The one must on every visitor’s list is Edaleen Dairy Ice Cream Shop, where tourists stand in line for a cone of maple nut ice cream with Canadians who come into the United States to buy their limited daily allotment of milk. A Blaine favorite for all ages is a ride on the Historic Plover Ferry that plies the waters

From the solitude of the deserted beach, it’s a short drive into the community of Blaine that sits just south of the international border. Blaine is the American side of the shared home of the Peace Arch international monument. There are sidewalk cafes in town that straddle the boundary. The Peace Arch City Cafe offers

For shoppers, nearby Birch Bay Square offers outlet prices on items not normally found in discount centers, including an outlet for discounted food and toys for pets. The Big Box Outlet in Langley, BC, offers a favorable exchange rate in addition to discounted prices. The bottom line is that Semiahmoo offers something for everybody. It is an overlooked treasure that deserves to be enjoyed by locals in addition to visitors from around the world. No need to design your perfect vacation destination. Just pack your bags—and don’t forget the binoculars.

ROSEMARY Rosemary is an aromatic evergreen shrub with needle-like leaves, blossoming in spring with white, pink, purple or deep blue flowers. Though native to the Mediterranean region, it’s extremely hardy and easy to grow and maintain indoors or out. The leaves, twigs and flowering tops are extracted for use and add a bright, unique flavor to a variety of foods such as pork, turkey, beef, fish, stuffing, vegetables, soups and even cocktails! And fresh is best!

HIGHLIGHT EVENT

IRONMAN Bids Farewell to Coeur d’Alene Final competition set for August 27 By Patty Hutchens

guarantees when it comes to climate, the later date does bring warmer water temperatures and a longer time for athletes to train during the summer months

In what has been a 14-year tradition in the city of Coeur d’Alene, the full IRONMAN will see its final year in our city this month, so you won’t want to miss your chance to witness some of the best athletes in the world pushing themselves through this grueling competition. The 2017 IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene will offer participants a chance at 50 qualifying spots to the 2017 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and has been praised by the athletes as one of the most beautiful settings for IRONMAN competitions.

If you are interested in being a spectator of this rigorous competition, one of the most popular places to view the event is City Park due to the fact much of the competition passes by there several times throughout the day. Just how long it takes to complete the course depends upon the athlete, but most professionals complete it in approximately eight hours.

Taking place August 27, the IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene takes participants on a 2.4-mile swim in the beautiful water of Lake Coeur d’Alene. Competitors then get on board their bikes and ride a 112-mile bike course that boasts no turns in an 80-mile stretch. The final stage, a 26.2-mile run, loops along the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene in what many call a world-class course.

The success of IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene over the years is due in large part to the literally thousands of volunteers who make it happen. Be sure to mark your calendar for this fun and exciting event as you witness some of the world’s greatest athletes pushing the limit to achieve what for many is a lifelong dream.

Originally held each June, IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene was moved to August in recent years due to concern over the weather. Although there are no

28 $25,000 SCHOLARSHIP UP FOR GRABS Raffle tickets on sale now By Colin Anderson

One of the biggest issues facing young adults today is the amount of debt undertaken to receive an education. Tuition continues to rise at universities, community colleges and even trade schools, making the cost of higher education unreachable for some families. Imagine being able to significantly lower that burden for a local young man or woman, and all you have to do is put $50 into a raffle. That’s the idea of the $25,000 Super Scholarship Raffle put on by the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce. Now in its second season, the Super Scholarship Raffle is a combination fundraiser for the chamber and large scholarship giveaway. A maximum of 1,000 tickets are sold at $50 each with $25,000 guaranteed to go to the scholarship winner and the rest to go toward the Post Falls Chamber and its outreach programs. Last year’s drawing winner Sherry Mundt decided to hold an essay contest for students whose parents were members of the Mica Flats Grange. After careful consideration, Lake City High School graduate Cody Jahns was awarded the $25,000 scholarship and enrolled last fall at North Idaho College with a plan to major in nursing. Scholarship drawing winners can use the money themselves or transfer the funds to someone else to be used at the participating local colleges that include NIC, Lewis and Clark State and the University of Idaho. Winners have up to five years to activate the scholarship, so even if your teen just got their driver’s license, they can still utilize the funds after graduation. Tickets can be purchased at the Post Falls Chamber office, Super 1 Foods in Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene, and the North Idaho College Bookstore. The drawing will be held September 28, and tickets are available for purchase up until the date of the drawing or until all 1,000 are sold. Additional funds from the drawing will go toward civic and charitable projects that the Post Falls Chamber participates in throughout the year. Whether looking for a career change yourself or bettering the life of someone in your extended family or community, just think of the weight that $25,000 will help lift off the shoulders of someone wanting to further their education and career. Get your tickets today before they sell out!
