With the New Year comes a time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. At Living Local magazines we have had a fantastic year and are exceedingly grateful to you our readers for being a large part of our success.

In early 2013 we expanded our Coeur d’Alene Living and Sandpoint Living editions to 64 pages. In the fall we expanded our Bonners Ferry Living to 24 pages. All of this growth was precipitated by the demand from our readers for more local stories about their communities. In each publication, we bring you stories about the good things that are going on in Coeur d’Alene; the difference non-profit organizations are making in our town; the small businesses that are doing their share to stimulate the local economy; updates on our high school aged youth; and ways in which you can live a healthier more active lifestyle.
To submit articles, photos, nominations and events email us at events@like-media.com. Advertising/Editorial Colin Anderson 509.263.9248 colin@like-media.com
As we look forward to 2014, Living Local is branching out with a new Living Local publication in Gig Harbor, WA. We will publish our first issue in February and already have received amazing response from that community.

My staff and I firmly believe that the reason Living Local magazines have been so successful is because we do what we can to connect communities, from the younger generation to the seniors, and help bring you the Good News of what is happening around you. When it comes to marketing, we are strong supporters of the small business owner and do what we can to help promote, brand and market their service or product to others. We do this not only through print media, but also through our Living Local websites, social media and more.

Wi t h three boys ages five, four and one and a half, there’s little time for much else for Spirit Lake resident Sandy. While her husband Anthony is away driving for a local trucking company, she watches over her three active boys to make sure they’re growing up right and are safe in their home. This was her primary concern when she first reached out to the North Idaho chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The mobile home the family of five lives in was in need of desperate repair. Sandy was so concerned at the state of her bathroom floor that she would only fill her bathtub with two or three inches of water to bathe her kids as she was frightened the floor could collapse under them at anytime. “I felt like I couldn’t provide a safe environment for my children, and that had to change,” recalled Sandy. Sandy heard about Habitat’s Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative and decided to make the call. It’s a call that would change her life and inspire her as well. Over the course of two years this program has helped with 38 different projects across North Idaho according to Katrina Boyer of Habitat for Humanity. Homeowners in need of repairs can purchase discounted supplies from Habitat’s ReStore in Hayden. The ReStore sells quality used and surplus building materials, home furnishings, appliances and furniture donated by stores, manufacturers, contractors, and the community. Volunteers then take time out of their schedule to help with everything from painting, framing, drywall, handicap accessibility, roofing, and more. “When the homeowner sees what we complete, it almost always gives them a leg up and they start doing additional projects on their own,” said Boyer. “Homeowners see the volunteers and they really get inspired.” When four volunteers showed up at Sandy’s home they immediately recognized her concerns. They got to work stabilizing the floor, taking out the laminate, and laying new flooring. They redid the drywall and installed a new sink purchased from the ReStore. The new found space also allowed the couple to include a stackable washer and dryer in the room, giving them additional space. “The kindness showe d

Good News a n d their generosity with their time, I feel very fortunate to have had their help,” said Sandy. Like many others, Sandy and Anthony were inspired to keep making improvements to their home. Once the boys have wound down at the end of the day, the couple gets to work on several projects around the home. Since the Habitat build, they’ve done trim work, redone their master bathroom, tore out old laminate flooring in the kitchen and replaced it with tile, and put some fresh paint on the walls. “I’m now much more appreciative of what I have and feel my children are safer and I can take better care of them,” said Sandy. In 2014, North Idaho Habitat for Humanity hopes to increase the number of projects with which it can help. With the current volunteer base and funding, it can help families and individuals on the building of new homes, repairing existing homes and can offer no-interest loans. There are currently one to two new homes being built in our community each year. North Idaho Habitat is hosting its 5th annual ‘Hearts for Homes’ dinner and auction, Saturday, February 15th at the Best Western Coeur d’Alene Inn. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased by calling 208.762.4663. These programs benefit our friends and neighbors and truly inspire the recipients to give back. “I would strongly recommend this program to any family who is struggling or might need some help,” said Sandy. For volunteer opportunities or additional information on North Idaho Habitat for Humanity, visit www.northidahohabitat.org.

Memory Foam? Cooling Gel? Pillow-Top? What to Choose? Sorting Through New Mattress Technology at Walker's Furniture Article Courtesy of Walker's Furniture
G
etting a good night sleep is important for relieving stress, helping with your daily energy levels, your functionality and overall well-being. If you’re sleeping on a mattress that’s more than six years old, chances are you’re not getting the quality of sleep that you could be with a new bed and new technology. Walker’s Furniture in Coeur d’Alene carries a wide selection of brands and all the latest technology. Their dedicated staff will help you discover a bed that best matches your style of sleep. Walker’s carries a large line of Serta mattresses which is rated as one of the industry’s top brands. The iComfort and iSeries beds use memory foam that molds to your body giving you maximum comfort. While memory foam beds are some of the most supportive and comfortable on the market, they can also have a difficult time deflecting body heat. The iSeries beds incorporate a cool action gel that helps keep you cooler while you sleep. Recent research has shown that those who sleep cooler tend to have a deeper sleep than bodies that overheat.
For those looking at a more traditional mattress, Walker’s carries everything from firm support to plush pillowtops depending on your sleeping style. Beds are tailored to you whether you sleep on your side, stomach or back, and knowledgeable staff can help identify which models are most comfortable specifically for you. With Simmons, Enso, and Smart Choice all available in store, you’ll be sure to find a better night sleep. Walker’s also carries a full line of TempurPedic beds, which are the highest rated beds in the industry. Lie down, relax, and try out the fully adjustable and massage models. Walker’s was selected as one of the fastest growing retail locations on the west coast by both Serta and Tempur-Pedic and are an elite retail dealer, which means they are held to a higher standard of excellence and service. A new properly fit mattress will help alleviate aches and pains in your back, neck, and shoulders, and a better night sleep will help you feel energized and ready to go for the day. Do yourself a favor in 2014 and start the New Year off right with the quality of sleep you deserve.

Tips for When It's Time to Move On By Jan Leaf of Coldwell Banker Schneidmiller Real Estate
M
aking the transition from ‘our home’ to ‘the house we are selling’ can take a bit of an adjustment. You are moving Jan currently Leaf on from the place you call home to something new. While it can be difficult Coldwell Banker at first, you must realize the houseRealty you are Schneidmiller moving out of is now a product: a product 1924 Northwest Blvd to be marketed and promoted like any other Coeur d’Alene Idaho merchandise. Here are some tips to help your home look its best when potential buyers stop in for a tour.
shines. Remember, even the small things can make a potential buyer walk away. When you prepare your house for showing, remember to:
Make first impressions count:
The best smell for a house is no smell at all. Potpourri or sweet candles make a buyer wonder what you are trying to cover up. Be subtle: open windows, let fresh air in, keep dog and cat areas super clean and take them with you during a showing if possible.
•
Without a doubt a visually appealing house will attract buyers who can’t help but respond to the look and feel of a home. Take time to carefully prepare for showings by: • Cutting the grass, trimming the hedges. • Remove clutter from the yard. The Nose has it:
Choosing the right professional: This is perhaps the most important decision you will make when selling property. When interviewing agents to list your property remember that the agent who quotes you the highest price may not be the best agent to get your home sold. A good agent will compare your home to similar homes in your area that have sold in the past six months; an unrealistic price will lead to frustration for you and will delay the sale. Ask each Jan Leaf prospective agent about their experience, Coldwell Banker how many homes they have sold in the past Schneidmiller Realty year, any special training they have received, 1924 Northwest Blvd and how many listings they are currently Coeur d’Alene Idaho carrying (more than 25 is not desirable to you (208) 064-4447 as the seller). Asian Twist
New Restaurant Brings Unique Flavors to Coeur d’Alene By Colin Anderson
T
hai cooks pride themselves on finding a balance of sour, sweet, salty, and bitter in their creation of many of the most unique dishes on the planet. Thai dishes are packed with flavorful veggies and lean meats, making them not only delicious but a very healthy option as well. Coeur d’Alene’s newest restaurant ‘Asian Twist’ features not only Thai, but an extensive menu of comfort foods from halfway around the world. ‘Asian Twist’ is the second area restaurant for owners Lily and Frank who also own and manage Fu-Ki Japanese Steakhouse in Post Falls. Lily says her Post Falls customers were asking about more Asian food options in the area, and that’s what motivated her to open her new location.
DINE IN OR TAKE OUT “Our food is a little spicy, a little sweet,” said Lily. “Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, or Yellow Curry are all good options for people who are new to Thai cuisine.” If you like your meal spicy as can be, order the Gang Dang (Red Curry $9-$12) ‘Thai Hot’ and wash it down with a delicious and soothing Thai Iced Tea or Vietnamese Coffee. ‘Asian Twist’ also offers Teriyaki Chicken, Beef, and Salmon, Yakisoba Noodles, and Hibachi grilled Chicken and Shrimp. Each comes with steamed rice and fresh cooked vegetables. A cup of Hot and Sour, Crab Tofu or Miso soup will set you back just two bucks.
“Thai food and spicy food in general is in high demand right now,” said Lily. The menu features Thai mainstays such as Tom Yum Soup ($8-$12) and Thai Fried Rice ($7 -$9), which has egg, onion, tomato, green onion, Thai chili, basil leaves, and bell pepper. You can also order the ever popular ‘Pad Thai’ ($8-$12). This fantastic dish includes rice noodles, bean sprouts, eggs, green onion and is topped with ground peanuts and your choice of meat or tofu. Not everyone loves an immensely spicy dish so you can order most dishes low spice.
For dessert try an avocado sushi! Half an avocado is blended with condensed milk, sugar, and ice, and comes out in an ice cream like texture.

“We want to be a comfortable everyday dining place,” said Lily. “The prices are reasonable, the food is fresh, the portions are generous, and the wait staff is attentive. These are our goals.” Diners can choose to stay and eat their meal or order ahead and take it home with them. Prices are the same for lunch and dinner and nothing on the menu is more than $12. You can find ‘Asian Twist’ just off Lincoln in the Ironwood Shopping Center. They are open 11:30am – 9:00pm Sunday – Thursday and until 9:30pm Fridays and Saturdays.

A Hometown Hero
Sandpoint Native Killed While Serving in Afghanistan A Hometown Hero By Patty Hutchens
I
t was a sadness that resonated throughout North Idaho when Sandpoint native David Lyon was killed in Afghanistan just two days after Christmas. For those who grew up with Lyon, they remember him as the all-star athlete who was kind to everyone. He was a football player and track and field star at Sandpoint High School where he still holds the shot-put record of 55’ 2” that he claimed in 2003. Just over a year ago, he was inducted into the Sandpoint High School Athletic Hall of Fame. But now Lyon’s legacy will be for more than his big heart and athletic ability. He will be remembered for making the ultimate sacrifice for our country. A member of the United States Air Force, Lyon had been stationed in Afghanistan for just under a year and was scheduled to return home in approximately one month. Reports state that Lyon was part of a convoy of international troops when a suicide bomber attacked the convoy about a half-mile from NATO’s Camp Phoenix base in Kabul. The fiveyear Air Force veteran attended the Air Force Academy and was stationed out of Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. In an interview with KXLY News, Sandpoint High School football

coach Satini Puailoa said that Lyons was a person that everyone looked up to. "He was the guy that if you walked into the locker room he would help a younger kid put on his equipment.” Thank you David Lyons for your service and for giving the ultimate sacrifice. You truly are a hometown hero.

Shop Local – Make This One of Your New Year’s Resolutions By Patty Hutchens
It’s a New Year and a time to make those ever popular resolutions! This year I would like to challenge you to make a different and unique resolution that will not only benefit you, but also your community. When one chooses to shop in his or her locally owned stores, they are not only saving themselves time by not traveling to other destinations, but they likely are also saving money. Traveling out of town for your shopping needs requires the cost of gas, time away from home or work and, depending upon where you go, could also mean a higher sales tax. If you are an Internet shopper, you may save time, but not always money. After all, those shipping costs can quickly add up.
As we enter 2014 why not make a resolution to do as much of your shopping locally as possible. The benefits to your community are many. Small business owners are known for their contributions to the many non-profit agencies that in turn help our friends, neighbors and colleagues. Statistics show they are two and half times more likely to do so than the large chain stores. Small business owners are the ones who take the money they earn and reinvest it into their community with their own purchases of goods and services. Can the same be said for the “big box” stores? By shopping at locally owned stores you are not only helping to stimulate the local economy, but you may likely be helping other people in the community who rely upon several of our nonprofits during the down times in their lives. Shop Local in 2014!

New Year’s Resolutions Simple Steps To Achieve Your Goals for 2014 By Patty Hutchens

New Years Resolutions
T
he holidays are over, and as we pack away the ornaments, take down the lights and return to our regular routine, we begin to look forward to the New Year. And with that usually comes a reflection on the past 12 months and a focus on how things can be different in the year ahead. We silently begin to formulate our New Year’s resolutions. While we begin with good intentions, our resolutions are often forgotten by the time Valentine’s Day rolls around. According to a report published by the University of Scranton in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, 45% of people make New Year’s resolutions, but a mere 8% actually achieve their goal. So the question becomes how can we be more successful in achieving those self imposed objectives? When you look at what the top ten New Year’s resolutions typically are, it is no surprise that the rate of failure is so high. Included in the list are the following goals: lose weight, become more organized, become more fiscally responsible, exercise and eat right, quit smoking and spend more time with family and friends. Do you recognize those promises? I am sure many of us have made a personal vow to do our best to achieve at least one of them. But if you read through them again, take note of the fact they are all very subjective in nature. One way we can do better at achieving our resolutions is be very concrete when setting a goal. Yes, losing weight and living a more active lifestyle are great goals to have, but it is how we achieve our goals that should be the focus of our New Year’s resolutions. Instead of lose weight, why not commit to joining an exercise class twice a week? If you want to eat healthier, commit to more home cooked nutritious meals and limit the number of times you eat at restaurants. If you would like to volunteer more time to your community, you should make your resolution to volunteer with a favorite organization for a set number of hours per week. Making the goal a concrete one with a way to measure your success will make it much easier to track and more likely you will achieve it. Remember too to make your goal a realistic one. For instance, if you are not currently attending any exercise classes, do not suddenly commit to five days per week at the gym. Doing so will leave you discouraged and more likely to give up on going all together.
34 Coeur d’Alene Living Local | www.cdaliving.com
For many individuals and couples they make a resolution to pay off their debt over the course of the upcoming year. A good way to achieve this is not to say you will pay off all your debt, but instead set your budget at the beginning of the year and decide what is realistic for you to pay towards that debt each month.
So the question becomes how can we be more successful in achieving those self imposed objectives? Another reason many of us fail at our goals is that we do not share our goals with others, the result of which is we have no accountability. The explosion of social media in recent years has made it easier to communicate with others near and far about our daily activities. Why not include our goals in that? To the extent you are comfortable doing so, share your goals with others whom you trust to help keep
New Years Resolutions you on track. Better yet, find a friend who shares the same goals and hold one another accountable. Remaining positive plays a critical role in achieving success of your New Year’s resolutions. This is easier said than done, but is important in keeping you motivated. If you made a resolution to go to the gym three times a week but only made it once, focus on the fact that once is one more time than what you did in the past. Keeping track of your accomplishments, whether on a calendar or in a journal, will help keep your motivation strong! Lastly, set goals that can fit into your schedule. If you are like most people, your schedule is packed with work, kids’ activities and household chores leaving little time for you. Schedule those activities that will help you achieve your goals into your calendar just as you would any other activity. Soon, those activities will become a regular part of your routine.
Looking for Ideas for a New Year’s resolution? Here are some ideas to help you get started on your journey: • Instead of taking the elevator, climb the stairs to help incorporate more exercise into your daily routine. • Don’t be tempted by credit card purchases. Remove your credit cards from your wallet and put them in a safe place where you can use them for emergency only situations. • Plan your meals out a week in advance. Set time aside for the once a week
shopping and even prepare some of the food in advance. This will help reduce the temptation of take out food or going out to eat when your hectic schedule becomes overwhelming. • Take care to schedule personal time into your busy schedule. Whether it’s a spa day to pamper yourself at home or at a salon, spending time with your kids playing a game free of distractions, or finding time to reconnect with a friend, you will find the time spent on you and those whom you love helps to reenergize you. • Purchase a journal and take the time to use it to reflect on the blessings in your life and also to track your accomplishments towards the goals you have set. It will help you to become more focused on the positive!

Community Spotlight
Giving Local Kids a Voice Enter the Spot On Media Contest By Kerri Wilfong, Executive Director of Kootenai Alliance for Children and Families
I
t’s almost time to enter the 5th Annual Spot On Media Contest! Entries will be accepted February 1st through 28th, 2014. Coordinated by Kootenai Alliance for Children & Families, this contest gives 6th-12th grade students in Kootenai County a chance to share their ideas for a positive substance abuse prevention message that they think needs to be spread in the community. Yes, there are prizes. Yes, there is recognition. But the greatest benefit kids receive from entering the contest is knowing that their voice is being heard by adults in their community who care about them and value their ideas, opinions and perspectives.
Just the act of entering the contest is a healthy, productive, pro-social activity for kids to experience. Their efforts are recognized and rewarded by KACF and other community partners. Being selected as the first place winner brings even greater recognition and rewards. The winning idea is developed into a campaign that includes a TV commercial, print advertising (newspaper and magazine), billboards and various other pieces such as posters, mailers, banners and more. This contest is grounded in proven research and local data. It is widely understood that people, especially kids, are more likely to change a behavior because they want to be
part of something positive than they are to change because they are afraid of something negative. Kootenai County’s weakest protective factor is “Community Rewards for Pro-social Involvement” and our second highest risk factor is “Family History of Antisocial Behavior”, 2012 Communities That Care Youth Survey. Check out last year’s campaign commercial and behind the scenes footage to see just how much fun the participating kids had at www.KootenaiAlliance.org. We look forward to seeing the entries poor in soon!

t was a summer full of digging, pounding, hauling, and paving; and the McEuen Park project is on schedule and work is continuing through the winter. Activity is slower, but crews are still able to focus on framing structures as well as a majority of the electrical work. Freezing temperatures put a hold on asphalt and concrete work, however a good portion of sidewalk and pavement was laid this fall. Playground equipment is in place, as are bright and vibrant new tennis and basketball courts as well as splash pads for the kids. The Lake City Development Corporation says construction on the estimated $20-million dollar project is on time, and they are anticipating a late spring 2014 completion. Once completed, the park will include new public art, a re-designed Veterans’ Memorial, an amazing interactive playground for kids of all ages, a new dog park, more userfriendly and efficient public parking, a new Front Avenue promenade with community
gathering areas, a natural amphitheater, a new pavilion, a new grand plaza and waterfront promenade, scenic paved trails and an interactive splash pad with more than a dozen colorful water features. It will also boast a new scenic paved trail along the base of Tubbs Hill and a new divided Centennial Trail. The 3rd Street public boat launch will remain in place. Once the parking structure is finished, there will be an additional 702 spaces, which will help alleviate parking congestion along Sherman and Lakeside. For the latest construction updates visit the Lake City Development Corporation website at www.lcdc.org. Note: The 3rd street boat launch will remain open throughout the winter; however it may temporarily close when certain construction calls for it. Check with the City of Coeur d’Alene in regards to any upcoming temporary closures.

f the past four years are any indication, it can safely be said that Coeur d’Alene High School senior Matt James has a bright future ahead of him. Whether it’s in the classroom, on the football field or in a wrestling match, he gives 100%, and his dedication has clearly paid off.

Being involved in sports year round provides few breaks, but Matt still manages to maintain a 3.95 GPA and has received several academic awards. That alone takes commitment. But Matt is dedicated in his athletic endeavors as well. As a member of the Coeur d’Alene Vikings football team, Matt has been starting on the varsity team for three years, and has also been on the state football championship teams in 2010, 2011 and 2013. In 2013 he was selected for the first team All State Offensive and Defensive Line, and was voted the league’s Most Valuable Player. “I have been lucky to have had great coaches and teammates at CHS,” said Matt. “They have helped me to become a better player and person along the way.” Matt also received 2012 All League Defensive Lineman and was selected for All League in 2011. But his athletic awards are not just limited to football. He decided to take up wrestling in 2012 and

found great success in that sport as well. He was the 2013 District Champion Heavy Weight; he placed 3rd in State in 2013, and 5th in State 2012. As Matt looks ahead to college, he will be attending the University of Washington and will be playing football for the Huskies. And his academic goals are challenging as well. “I am interested in engineering both mechanical and biomedical and am interested in nano technology and research,” said Matt. Along the way there have been many memorable moments, but Matt said the one that meant the most to him was winning the state championship in football this year. “It has been a tough year for the Viking football program with our Coach getting cancer and then losing our starting QB to an injury late in the season, and we had a few losses along the way,” said Matt. “Winning is always your goal, but this year it was extra special. Winning your last football game as a CDA Viking is just special!” Matt has learned a lot from his coaches over the years, but he said the one lesson that has meant the most is that you need to work hard in everything you do; sports, academics and family. Favorite Food: Steak and potatoes Favorite Teacher: “I have had some great teachers at CHS, but if I had to pick just one I would pick Brian Holgate. He has been my coach since 5th grade when I first started playing football, and I have had him twice as a teacher in high school. He makes history/government interesting and he always gives other points of view. He is just a great guy.”

O
ne look at Lake City High School senior Jacob Dahl’s schedule and one wonders how he can possibly achieve all he has. The 17 year old is a member of the school’s football, basketball and tennis teams, is a member of the school band and participates in theater. Going into his senior year his GPA was a 3.7 and this year he said that average will likely be even higher. He is in his fourth year of Spanish, a subject he thoroughly enjoys. On the Lake City football team, Jacob is a versatile player at the positions of tight end, defensive end, receiver and long snapper. He was on the varsity football team for two years, as well as the varsity basketball team. Jacob said the biggest challenge he has faced in sports was early in high school when his opponent often physically outmatched him. But spending time in the weight room to become stronger and faster in addition to his competitive drive helped him overcome that. “I’m always working to improve myself,” said Jacob. As far as Jacob’s post high school plans go, he is looking forward to doing a two-year mission for his church and then he plans to attend college where he would like to participate in sports. “I’ll probably play basketball,” said Jacob who adds that tennis is a difficult sport to play at the college level due to the fact that schools recruit at an international level.
Jacob said his most memorable moment in his athletic career thus far was when he placed second at districts in tennis last year and went onto State where he won a match. Whether it’s tennis, basketball or football, Jacob said what he enjoys most about sports is the social aspect and the challenges sports provide. “I enjoy being with people, and I love the feeling you get in competition when you can overcome the stress and succeed.” Jacob has lived in Idaho his entire life and said he would enjoy going to school and working in Hawaii. “I’m ready for some sunshine,” he said. He is interested in a few different careers; among them are a police officer, teacher or even hotel management. “I enjoy interacting with people,” said Jacob who adds that a desk job does not appeal to him. In addition to all his activities and maintaining a high GPA, Jacob also works at Wal-Mart and has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. One lesson that Jacob has learned from his coaches that he can apply throughout all aspects of his life is that hard work always pays off, or at the very least has a positive result, especially if you are working for the right purpose. Favorite Food: Chicken Alfredo Favorite Teacher: Jim Anderson “He’s a great teacher and he knows how to connect with kids. He’s been a good example for me.”

Keep your family on track and incorporate a few simple rules for healthy living into your busy lives.
The Great Human Paradox By Dr. Joe Tessnedorf | Tessendorf Family Chiropractic, Hayden, ID
I
n the 1960's and 1970's the fish of the Great Lakes started washing up on shore with diseases and tumors. The birds that ate those fish became sick, their eggs were brittle and no offspring were produced. Both biologists and environmentalists became very concerned about the extinction of both species. How many of you think any biologist would come to the conclusion that the problem was due to the genes of these animals? How many of you believe the illnesses, cancers, and diseases they had were due to "bad genes?" How many of you think any biologist's logical solution was to dump
drugs and chemotherapy into the lakes, or set up tiny bird and fish hospitals with tiny bird and fish instruments to perform surgery and radiate them when they washed up on shore? Clearly none of this would seem logical, they would look to the environment of the fish and birds and fix it, which is exactly what they did. We must ask ourselves a very difficult paradigm shifting question. Why would this same approach or explanation seem logical for the human species (human animal)? It is absurd that we would blame genes for illness of any other species except our own, and I will tell you why.
One of the biggest reasons we don’t ask the questions is it’s very uncomfortable to ask or talk about. Sickness is a tragedy, and it becomes difficult to discuss responsibility, it is mistaken for blame. However, it is not blame, it is empowerment to prevent future illness, disease, and tragedy. Although it may be uncomfortable to ask, its more uncomfortable not to (moral compass). Our genes have remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years, yet the rates of which chronic disease are increasing are exponential (especially the past 100 years). One argument is that we are living longer. How January 2014 | Coeur d’Alene Living Local 45

No other mammalian species comes anywhere close to the heart disease, obesity, cancer, diabetes, acid reflux, anxiety, depression, infertility, anger, resentment, and lack of community that we do. We have been fooled into considering a human is not an animal, and now believe we don't have to abide by the same biological laws all animals do. Ask yourself when has any animal been put in captivity and become healthier? To some it might terrify or anger you, perhaps a feeling of guilt. Guilt will not serve you, and the truth as always can set you free.

wants to express health and vitality and avoid sickness and disease. Too often people shrink their lives to fit their physical capabilities and create a ceiling. Disease is extremely complex with so many contributing factors of bioaccumulation that no one factor causes one disease (do all smokers get lung cancer?). However health is quite simple if we only learn what TRUE health is and how we must achieve it. Are we making food choices based on how they make us feel, or how we feel afterwards? How many times have you every regretted eating an apple or going for a walk. Are you concerned about living a better moment or a better life? I hope this has provoked thought; it’s a seed of hope. D
ue to our culture, we are exposed to toxins every day. Toxins enter our body through the air we breathe; through pesticides, preservatives and artificial flavor and coloring in the foods we eat; and the chemicals in the lotions, shampoo or cleansers we use. They are difficult to avoid, but there are ways to limit our exposure and lessen the impact they have on our bodies. There are several ways to detox your body - some are pretty extreme, while many are simple, safe and effective. The question is Do you need to detox? For most of us, the answer is yes. Our organs are the filters that purify our blood and therefore our body. With all of the places toxins hide in our daily lives, our organs need a little help. If you experience any of these, you may benefit from detoxing: • Allergies • Obesity • Fibromyalgia • Chronic Headaches/ Migraines • Digestive Problems • Low Energy • Depression/Poor Mood • Bad Breath, Smelly Feet, Body Odor Start by listing everything you have going on including: cravings, sleep issues, skin conditions, bathroom habits, energy levels, aches and pains, medical conditions and mood. No matter what you think the cause may be, write it down! Keep track of your symptoms in a journal and rate them 1-5 each day. You’ll be surprised by how much can change in the weeks to come. Detoxing is not as difficult as you might think. Most of us are not cut out for fasting, even short term. So, let’s take a look at some easy ways to start detoxing your body this week! Juicing. Even once a day can improve your health. Use organic, non-GMO produce whenever possible. Include dark leafy
veggies, and then balance them with sweeter options like carrots, apples or berries. Don’t be afraid to try something new!
CRAZY WRAP THING?

GET WRAPPED!
Increase Your Water Intake. Ideally, you should drink half your body weight in ounces every day. (120 pounds = 60 ounces of water) Most of us don’t accomplish that. Make it your goal, then work up to it.

Limit Caffeine, Alcohol, Sugar and Processed Foods. Not only do these take a toll on your organs, but they also keep you from making better choices throughout the day. Take Some Time Out Each Day. Stress is unavoidable. Long term stress is unhealthy. It can overwork your adrenal glands, which produce hormones that affect your skin, joints, and weight to name a few. Relax and let your mind wander while you soak in that detox bath, start or end every day with a few minutes of prayer or meditation, or just day dream. Give yourself a break from planning and problem solving. Enjoy that moment in time. Many will not experience negative side effects, only positive, desirable ones, such as mental clarity, more energy throughout the day, cravings for healthful foods, and improved sleep. However, depending on your set of circumstances, you may experience a headache, nausea, or mild fatigue for the first few days. That is your body reacting to the absence of something it’s become addicted to. Usually caffeine or sugar are the big culprits.

ach season has its own set of injuries - winter is no exception! The most common injuries seen in our clinic are from winter sports and accidents, especially falls on the ice and snow. After a spell of icy weather and opening of the ski slopes, we start to see more skier's thumb and wrist fractures. Skier's thumb results from a rapid jerk of the thumb backwards, usually with the ski pole in hand. This injury used to be called gamekeeper's thumb, because in medieval times the gamekeeper would break the neck of game birds with that same type of force. This injury can be supported with a splint, but sometimes surgery is needed. Your thumb is considered 50% of your hand function due to the fact our opposable thumb is needed for fine coordination and dexterity. That opposable thumb is what makes us unique and different from apes (hopefully we are different in other ways as well!) Wrist fractures usually result from placing your arm out to break the fall. Tingling and numbness may indicate nerve involvement. Once out of the cast, patients are often surprised that they do not start moving normally right away. The fractures may have healed, but soft tissue and joints are often stiff and swollen. Even a normal hand will become stiff and swollen if held in one position for too long a time. Bodies were meant to move!! It is important to remember that impact may also be transferred to the
elbow, shoulder and neck, resulting in another fracture or soft tissue injury. Just the weight of the cast, which you hold above your heart to reduce swelling, can cause tightness and pain. If you hold your uninjured arm in that position, notice how tired it feels after even a short time. Over use of the opposite arm can cause stiffness and pain stiffness as well. Many people experience injury to the knee, hip or pelvis when the body is thrown out of alignment during a fall, which can throw the body out of balance. We often find that people who have had a fall will be so cautious with their bodies that their balance is compromised. This only sets you up for more falls. Sometimes the body was out of alignment in the first place, so it is important to identify, if possible, how you were injured. A thorough therapy evaluation can help you with that. Winter can also bring other injuries such as tendonitis, aches or strains from activities such as shoveling snow. Using the right tool and correct body mechanics can reduce your chance of injury. If you are injured, prompt therapy can help to decrease the pain, swelling and stiffness so you can regain flexibility and strength. Knowing what to do can make your recovery faster and easier, especially if you have additional health issues that can slow healing such as heart problems, diabetes or arthritis. Get going now and be back in action for Spring!

Transform Discipline into Freedom, Struggle into Grace and Willpower into Passion By Lisa Paull, Certified Personal Trainer, FAST Program Director at PneuThera Sandpoint
T
he year 2014 is here! A time for renewal, an opportunity to change for the better, a chance to make promises towards your future. You say you want to eat better, exercise more, become more fit and healthy? Now’s the time!
frustrating. It is the motivational style employed by most dieters, hence the reason 95% of them fail. Chasing the carrot on the stick takes much effort and discipline, and the promise of reward in the future may not be enough to keep you on track.
On how many New Year’s occasions have you promised yourself and made resolutions that you have not followed through on? How can you make this year different? How can you maintain the motivation to be successful? No matter what activity we are participating in, success lies in the discipline it takes to maintain through the obstacles that life throws at us. Either out of perceived need or finding enjoyment in an activity, we are able to overcome those obstacles and stay true to our task.
Moving from “I should get in shape” to “I want to be fit” is the way out of the endless cycle of obligation. True desire to make a change enables you to set strongly defined visions and goals that will assist you in your process. You will fill your tool box with strategies to help you stay with your commitments longer and work towards the win in your future.
External motivators, “I should exercise…I should eat right” are a common point of entry into fitness and nutrition. They may be enough to get you started, but feeling obligated lacks sustainability and is often
What do you love doing so much that you become lost in the activity itself? Internal motivators of enjoyment, “I love to”, are powerful and self-generated. When we are rewarded from the activity itself, we no longer feel outside pressure to perform and it is easier to maintain. We will triumph even in the face of great obstacles, finding a way to get the job done no matter what. True success comes from mastery, when an activity ceases to be something you do and becomes a way of life. The motivator “I am inspired, just try and stop me” prevails. You will train and eat well because that is how you approach life. Although they will happen, a day without exercise is uncomfortable. It is easy to avoid the foods your body rejects. You have reached the Zone of Inspiration! Wherever you currently fit on this motivation scale, assess yourself and look at what you can do to move to the next stage. Find your passion in healthy ways to make your resolutions come true. Set small goals and find strength in the support systems that surround you. Be patient, committed, and persistent. Transform discipline into freedom, struggle into grace, and willpower into passion. Lisa Paull is a Certified Personal Trainer and is the Program Director at FAST, located at PneuThera on North Boyer in Sandpoint.

Yellowstone National Park A Place For All Ages By Jessica Herbig
I
f you’ve never been to Yellowstone, there’s no time like the present to experience some of the natural wonders that still exist in our country! Some of us have gone as kids and some of us remember some of what we experienced. But as an adult, Yellowstone National Park is a place full of amazing sights and experiences that will give us memories for a lifetime. There are five entrances to Yellowstone, allowing one to enter from all corners of the country. If you hit the north entrance, you’ll pass through Gardiner, Montana. This entrance is the only one open year around. The others close during the winter season due to poor road conditions. If you enter via the North entrance, the scenery alone is worth the trip and you will quickly learn how Montana has earned its nickname “The Big Sky State.” Gardiner is classic small town Americana, with family owned restaurants, and a burgeoning number of fly fishing shops for those who are headed down to fish the famous Yellowstone River. You’ll head south through the Roosevelt Arch and pay your dues at the North Entrance Station. A $25 fee gets you a week long pass into the park, though you can get an annual park pass for $50. You’ll get a map showing the routes through the park, locations of famous sites such as Old Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs, as well as available campsites.

at the Ranch
It’s said that it takes about a day and a half to drive the scenic loop through Yellowstone Park. From the North Entrance it is 5 miles to Mammoth Hot Springs where herds of elk bed down on the lush green lawns in the center of town. If you stay here, you’ll likely see a few large bull elk vying for the attention of the ladies. This can get rather exciting because park rangers will sometimes have to block off road traffic because bull elk won’t clear the roadway to let people through safely! Count on delays going into the fall when the elk are in rut. Better yet, make Mammoth Hot Springs your first stop for exploration when you enter the park! Fifty-nine miles from the North Entrance, you’ll find Old Faithful. The road there will give you a peek at buffalo, elk, bear, birds, and a multitude of wildlife. This is not the highest shooting geyser in the park, but its name comes from the regularity of its explosions. Park rangers can predict when the geyser will go off within a timespan of 10 minutes. There is a lodge at Old Faithful as well as an information center and exploration/discovery center for children. If you arrive at Old Faithful between bursts, this is a great way to occupy your time, especially with little children, while waiting for the next eruption. The best time to view the wildlife in the area is in the morning after first light and in the evening right before dark. On summer’s hottest days, the wildlife bed down mid-day to conserve energy. A bonus to getting up early is the spectacular sunrises you can see from various vantage points in the park.

Pet Pals
Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Mouth Care Keep Your Pet Healthy & Happy By Dr. Dawn Mehra, North Idaho Animal Hospital, Sandpoint, Idaho www.idahovet.com / ask@idahovet.com / 208.265.5700 Why should I brush my dog's or cat's teeth? Plaque is actually an accumulation of bacteria that we know is bad for the mammalian body. Daily removal of plaque is the key to an oral hygiene program. Unless your pet's teeth are brushed daily, plaque will build uap at the gum line. Eventually calculus forms, further irritating the gums, and then infection progresses to loosen and destroy the attachment of the tooth. In addition to loose teeth, infection under the gum line can spread to the liver, kidneys, and heart. How can I brush my animal's teeth? It CAN be a very easy and fun procedure using a small, non threatening soft-bristled toothbrush. Next, get toothpaste from your veterinarian- chicken and malt flavors make it pet palatable! Stay away from human toothpaste because not only does it taste bad, it has detergents that should not be swallowed. How often does my pet need to have teeth cleaned by the veterinarian? It depends on the degree of plaque and tartar accumulation. Cats accumulate differently from dogs, and there is much variation between species. We have seen pretty pearly whites on very old Labrador Retrievers and trench mouth in fairly young Miniature Poodles. Generally, the smaller the head, the more crowded the teeth, the thicker the plaque, calculus, and disease. One needs to examine your pet's teeth monthly. Look for an accumulation of yellow or brown material at the area where the tooth meets the gum line especially over the cheek teeth and canines. Once you notice plaque or tartar accumulation, it is time for a professional cleaning. Do not wait. When gingivitis is left untreated, it will progress to periodontitis, which is non-curable. The inflammation caused by periodontitis will resolve when treated. If you cannot brush your pet's teeth, no problem, he or she can have 1-2 cleaning visits yearly at the veterinary hospital.
Book Now For Your Holiday Travels!
Can I just take my fingernail or a dental scaler to remove the calculus? Dental disease occurs below the gum line. By removing calculus from the tooth, you are not removing disease below the gum line. In order to thoroughly help your pet, plaque and calculus must be removed from below the gum line. In addition, dental scalers that are not properly cared for can actually scrape the enamel. Besides setting up a rough surface for plaque to accumulate faster, damage to the enamel can expose dentin, which is very sensitive to air and temperature. Do you have to use anesthesia to clean my pet's teeth? Anesthesia is necessary when performing teeth cleaning. Anesthesia provides three important functions: immobilization in order to clean properly above and below the gum line, pain relief, and the ability to place a tube into the windpipe, so bacterial products do not enter the lungs. I am concerned about the anesthesia. Is it safe? We take every effort to provide safe anesthesia. We use gas anesthetic agents; dogs and cats are given pre-operative tests depending on their age and condition to qualify them for anesthesia; and patients are monitored while anesthetized both visibly and with similar monitoring devices as used in human hospitals. What is involved in the teeth cleaning at your hospital? North Idaho Animal Hospital dental care procedure has eleven separate steps: • • • • •

cleaning
It is difficult to determine precisely what the procedure will cost until we know the status of your pet's teeth and gums. We can quote general cleaning and radiograph fees; every patient has these in common. Fees are based on severity plus costs for preoperative testing, anesthesia, and medication such as analgesics and antibiotics. The doctor or technician can provide an initial treatment plan based on exam room findings, anything obvious can of course be quoted. A follow up treatment plan will be communicated to you after a tooth-by-tooth exam is conducted under anesthesia. Fees for all dental services are available by e-mail or fax.

tooth. Radiograhs are taken to evaluate if the teeth can be saved or need to be extracted.
What are cat cavities?
As soon as puppy or kitten teeth emerge, it’s time to start brushing! Although baby teeth are replaced with adult teeth, the puppy or kitten gets used to the brushing procedure, which continues for life. An easily overlooked problem is malocclusion or improper bite. This should be detected early to prevent head shyness- jaw gridlock and enamel sensitivity causing pain and suffering.
Many cats get painful lesions at the gum line that invade teeth, sometimes referred to as tooth resorptions. Unfortunately we do not know what causes tooth resorption, and the most effective treatment involves extraction of the affected tooth. Check to see if your cat has an advanced resorption by pressing a cotton-tipped applicator to the gum line. If a painful lesion is noted, your cat will chatter its jaw.
What toys should I avoid to protect my pet's teeth? Chewing on objects harder than teeth can easily lead to crown fractures. Be especially careful with cow and horse hoofs. They commonly cause damage to the upper fourth premolars. Tug-of-war games must
When do I have to start worrying about dental problems with my pet?
What can be done if my pet has periodontal disease? Periodontal disease occurs when tooth support structures are affected by infection. In the beginning stages, cleaning above and below the gum line as well as removal of calculus attached to the tooth will help restore periodontal health. In advanced cases, either periodontal surgery or extractions are performed. Antibiotics given monthly also help to control the progression of periodontal disease. Which animals are at most risk for periodontal disease?
What is the best food for my pet? Hard food will help remove plaque from teeth. There are special diets specifically manufactured to help control plaque. Feeding the special diets in conjunction with daily brushing is the best to keep the teeth clean. Diet alone will not control plaque, but it will help. Remember, as with humans, nothing takes the place of daily tooth brushing.
living
How can I tell if my pet is suffering from periodontal disease? The leading sign is bad breath. Bad breath comes from infection. If your pet's breath does not smell like roses, it is time to take him to a hospital that has the ability to clean and radiograph your pet's mouth. What types of tests are done to diagnose dental disease? If your pet has periodontal disease or a fractured tooth, an oral exam is performed while under anesthesia. A periodontal probe is used to evaluate bone loss around each
Smaller breeds are more prone than larger because the teeth are closer together in small dogs, and they usually live longer. Terriers, Maltese, and Shih Tzus are especially prone to periodontal disease. What can you do to fix a broken tooth? If your dog or cat breaks a tooth, there are two treatments: root canal therapy or extraction. You cannot leave the tooth alone with an exposed nerve. In addition to pain, infection will soon develop that can spread to the rest of your pet's body.

Project Healing Waters Local Vets Come Together to Focus on Fishing By Colin Anderson

n the bottom level of the VA hospital in Spokane, a group meets weekly. Some might call it therapy, others might see it as counseling, but it’s clear the members of this group see it as camaraderie. Each Tuesday at 9:00am veterans and volunteers gather to tie flies in anticipation of the upcoming fishing season. These vets are part of a national organization called Project Healing Waters which teaches everything about fly-fishing to recovering warriors and disabled veterans. Participants learn fly tying, casting, and rod building, and when they’re ready to put their skills to the test, they’re paired with local guides who volunteer their services to those who have sacrificed for all of us. At today’s group there are seven vets representing nearly every branch of service. Some served in Iraq, others in Vietnam and Korea, and on this day ninety-one year old

Lieutenant Colonial Francis Leslie, a World War II bombardier, stopped in to see his son Rob help his fellow vets tie a few flies. Two men are in wheelchairs and two others have lost their vision, but with the help of volunteers each is able to create a great looking bug that could fool just about any rainbow, brown, or cutthroat. Norm Scott heads up the Spokane program, one of one hundred and fifty seven programs across the country. He’s been with Project Healing Waters for about a year and a half and has watched it grow from something very minimal to helping more than 50 local veterans. “Our volunteers really drive this program,” said Scott. “By the end of the year, ten of us will have logged more than two thousand hours helping these vets have something else to think about than the aches and pains.”
Project Healing Waters Nationally more than eight thousand veterans have taken part in the program and volunteers have logged more than one hundred and twenty thousand hours this year alone. National organizations such as Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly Fishing Clubs have pledged their support to Project Healing Waters, and with a paid staff of just five, more than ninety-five percent of all donations go directly to the veterans. Feathers, hooks, rod blanks, and other equipment come from local businesses and local fishermen. Drift boats, rafts, waders, boots and more are provided by guides who are passionate about the program. This past year the Spokane program went

on nine trips including two that were televised on the show ‘Trout TV.’ They’ve fished the Northport, Coeur d’Alene, and Yakima Rivers and hope to get to the St. Maries and St. Joe this upcoming summer. All transportation, tents, cabins, meals, and gear are provided at no cost. Upstairs in a slightly smaller room a group of female veterans is tying as well. While not as large a group, these women are clearly passionate about tying flies which is evidenced by the massive amount of feathers on the table and a bit quicker pace than their gentlemen counterparts downstairs. There are smiles and jokes, but also thankfulness when the program is brought up. One member mentions that she’d probably be wasting away in the woods somewhere if she hadn’t found this program which gave her a focus. The weekly get together is scheduled
to last two hours, but some will tie well into the afternoon. This room is where the men’s group started and outgrew and these women hope to see their numbers increase as well. Norm Scott is planning the upcoming season and anticipating more participation and more days on the water. He’s also planning a few more lake trips to accommodate those in wheelchairs or those who can’t get around as well. He’s always on the lookout for additional equipment, volunteers, guides, and of course funding. Project Healing Waters does not receive any government funding and relies on private and corporate donations to keep the program going. If you have equipment, time, or dollars you would like to donate to this program you can email Norm at nscott41@gmail.com or visit www.projecthealingwaters.org, Spokane Chapter.
