PUBLISHER’S NOTE Celebrate! THIS MONTH WE CELEBRATE MOTHER’S DAY. It is a time set aside to honor those women who are there for us through all phases of our lives, give selflessly of themselves and love us unconditionally.
!
ALS T N E R E HAV
Motherhood has changed significantly over the last generation. The days of Ozzie and Harriet and Ward and June Cleaver are no longer the typical American family. Instead, we have families with both parents working and single-parent homes. Now more than ever mothers are juggling multiple roles. It’s exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. Motherhood comes in many forms. It is the grandmother who comes to all of your sporting events. It is the aunt who remembers all the special occasions in your life. It is the friend’s mom who provides advice at every stage of your life, especially after your own mother is no longer here. As we celebrate this special day dedicated to mothers, think of those women in your life who have been a positive influence and helped shape you into who you are today. Maybe they don’t even know the difference they have made to you. Pick up the phone, give them a call and tell them, “Thank you.” It is the greatest Mother’s Day gift of all.

MINIMALISM
ELIMINATING THE EXCESS
SO A COUPLE WEEKS AGO, my husband approached me about trying a “minimalist lifestyle.” Before he even started explaining what that meant, I immediately imagined living in a container house with no furniture, being dropped off at work since we’d only have one car, having to abandon all our “stuff,” and feeling unaccomplished. In short, I felt panicked! In reality, it was a great start to a lengthy conversation. I learned a lot about what a minimalist lifestyle really meant and how we were letting our excessiveness bog us down. Being minimalist didn’t mean that we have to live a radical lifestyle with nothing. It just means that we keep what we really need and use regularly—and yes, I got to keep my car. Everything we don’t need, we donate, sell or throw out. It’s a process that we are still going through, but we’ve gotten rid a ton of stuff. There’s a lot of information out there about this and about dealing with sentimental items, how the whole process works and how it changes your mindset. This part sounded funny to me, but it did

work. You are supposed to question your possessions as you are going through them. Is this something I really need? When was the last time I used it? What would happen if I got rid of it?
DON’T START TO PANIC
Some items are no brainers; if you haven’t seen it or used it within the last year, it’s gone. You shouldn’t hold on to it as a “just in case” or a “backup” item. Last year I wrote that you should hang all your hangers one direction and then as you wear the clothes, turn the hangers around. After six months, look at the hangers and get rid of all the backwards hangers to clear out room in your closet. That could apply here as well. Onto the household stuff. Did we really need three sets of dishes? Our kids are 10 and 11, so we decided that we’ve graduated from the plastic cups and dishes. We don’t use the china, and it was on display in the cabinet that also needed purged, so now we have more cabinet space and enjoy eating all of our meals off the “good” dishes and drink out of real glasses.

FEAR NO MORE
EVOLVING MEDICINE
THE FEAR FREE INITIATIVE BY DR. DAWN MEHRA
SPECIALIZED TRAINING
HOW MANY PET OWNERS out there have ever seen their dogs shake, rattle and roll before they even set paws into the veterinary office? Too many! And cats? Well, felines are even more fearful when whisked away from their beloved territory called “home.” For the last five years, North Idaho Animal Hospital has been diligently working on “taking the Pet out of Petrified,” as associate veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker astutely words it. Last year, the hospital rose to a new level, entered into specialized training for the whole team of caregivers from front to back, and became Fear Free certified—one of the first hospitals in the nation to achieve this goal.
out when searching for a diagnosis. Most importantly, dampening FAS has been proven to enhance healing. How does a hospital team accomplish such a challenging task? It starts with observations of the pet and discussions with the owner. It proceeds to building support for a positive experience during the visit. This may be as easy as treats, or it might require calming medications to be given at home before the next visit. The goal is to support the emotional needs of the pet (and the owner) so that the entire experience, from the pet’s viewpoint, is as close to stress-free as possible. There is no cookbook because every situation, patient and owner has different emotional and physical perceptions and needs. NIAH team members custom fit the FAS reduction and record it in the chart in anticipation of the next visit. These are continually modified until they find the “best fit.”
The Fear Free initiative is transforming pet owners and the bond they feel with their veterinary team. It’s making it easier and less stressful to get that dog or cat into the veterinary office for care. The benefits for companion animals are plenty: Lowering Fear-Anxiety-Stress allows for a more thorough physical examination. It also results in more accurate blood tests and vital signs, and thus helps take some of the guess work
As we enter the 21st Century, it is not surprising that veterinary

RIDE THE HIAWATHA
Bike and explore the beautiful backcountry. By Colin Anderson
IT’S SPRING! THE TIME HAS COME to pull the bike down from the rafters, brush off the dust, grease up the chain and get ready for another great summer riding season. If you’ve been a little lackadaisical on the exercise front, maybe it’s best to start off with something easy, and the Route of the Hiawatha might be just the warmup you need. What’s better than seeing some of the most spectacular scenery in North Idaho while traveling almost entirely downhill? The trail opens for the season on May 27. For those who haven’t been, it’s an easy yet spectacularly beautiful ride. Lookout Pass Ski Hill operates the trail and offers rentals and shuttle service if you don’t want to take two vehicles on the trip.
want a bigger challenge, you can extend the ride up to 30 miles with only a little bit of uphill grade near the beginning of the ride. Helmets and headlamps are required of all riders, and passes can be purchased at any trailhead, Lookout Pass or the Wallace Inn. Mountain bike tires are recommended as the pathway surface is a mixture of hard-packed gravel and dirt. Ride the Hiawatha is a great way to see the incredible backcountry we have all around us without having to exert maximum energy. Enjoy a leisurely ride and be reminded why we choose to call this part of the country home.
Most riders begin at the East Portal Trailhead, which is located 7 miles into Montana off the Taft exit. A 15-mile leisurely downhill ride awaits you as you glide down smooth path that was once a busy Milwaukee railway. Riders pass through beautiful vistas and overlooks of the Bitterroot Mountains as well as several high trestle bridges and train tunnels—including one that is more than a mile and a half long. If you

A Cup of Grace Bringing friends and neighbors together “one cup at a time” | By Jani Gonzalez
AMY PRIVITT KNEW that something else was in store for her outside of her comfortable life back in Weatherford, Texas. Something was missing, but she didn’t know what. “I had felt God calling me for a long time, but until that day I did not realize what the good Lord wanted. I got down on my knees and surrendered my life to Him. I told Him I would go anywhere and do anything for Him,” she said. Little by little, over the course of four years, she found her answer last fall in starting Cup of Grace, a faith-based non-profit serving free meals in Spirit Lake but also helping anyone in need in the Rathdrum, Athol or Blanchard areas.
Rural communities are picturesque, but their struggles are often hidden. School counselors may help in sending meals home with children who need them, but what about those who are home-schooled or who are elderly? Or, how do you help neighbors who are tucked away in the woods and snow bound for the winter? Enter Cup of Grace. Privitt felt called to live in Northern Idaho, landing in Spirit Lake. She retired as a teacher and took a job working at Brickel Creek Coffee where she began meeting people in the community. It was there that she had her “a-ha” moment to begin serving a free meal. “The coffee shop was my platform to meet people, figure things out and spread the word about what I

LITTLE BY LITTLE, OVER THE COURSE OF FOUR YEARS, SHE FOUND HER ANSWER LAST FALL IN STARTING CUP OF GRACE, A FAITHBASED NON-PROFIT SERVING FREE MEALS IN SPIRIT LAKE BUT ALSO HELPING ANYONE IN NEED IN THE RATHDRUM, ATHOL OR BLANCHARD AREAS.
wanted to do. And people kept saying that they wanted to help,” Privitt said recently at a local fundraiser. A 4am wake-up call Cup of Grace is just getting started, but it began in the back of Privitt’s mind in 2012, when she still lived in Texas with her husband and two boys. Her strong marriage felt strained. She felt tired of working as a teacher and driving her kids to sports events. Oddly enough, one of her realizations came from watching a reality show about living in Alaska. “I had an urge to be one of those people. I realized I was tired; tired of the rat race, tired of running around, tired of working so much, tired of chasing kids at sports, tired of the city,” she said. Although she had the urge to argue and complain about her unhappiness, she kept quiet and prayed for answers. “The more I trusted, the better things got,” she said. She and her husband, Mark, put their home up for sale and planned to move to the Colorado countryside. They had lived there and thought they would return. But when her husband learned that an employee with his HVAC skill set was retiring from a company in Post Falls, they redirected their search to Northern Idaho.
In 2015, the family packed up and moved to Coeur d’Alene. Privitt resumed teaching but still the feeling that something had to change persisted. When they toured their current home in Spirit Lake; again, she had her “a-ha” moment. Spirit Lake was the place to be; she could retire from teaching and focus on her ministry. “I began having visions about people coming together as a community and helping each other and feeding people. ... Most people seemed surprised that there was even a need, but I knew that if God was asking me to do this then there must be a need,” Privitt said. At the urging of a friend, she rented the Spirit Lake Senior Center for two months, not knowing if anyone would come or how she might pay for it out of her coffee-shop earnings. That same day, a friend donated the exact amount she needed without knowing. “I was truly humbled and in awe because I knew it was God,” she said. Free weekly meals Privitt and 15 volunteers hosted their first meal Tuesday, January 3. They had 22 people come. The next week, 55 came, followed by 44. Most recently, the count was 74! Each week, volunteers prepare a themed meal; meals are served, and there is live music.

Privitt’s nowhere near finished with her plans. She’d like to have enough volunteers and resources to offer a free meal every day. She’s also working with Priest River Ministries, an advocacy group for women and children, and helping them get the resources that social services don’t cover. A place to call home Cup of Grace is looking for a permanent place to call home in Spirit Lake. Come August, they’ll move temporarily to the old Lutheran Church on Jefferson Street. “Eventually, I want to have a gathering place with games and food,” Privitt said. The new place would also be a meeting place for Priest River Ministries and the services they provide. For now though, she’s excited at how Cup of Grace is progressing: “I just want to bring people together.” If you would like to volunteer or donate, please visit CupOfGrace.life, or come and enjoy a free meal with neighbors on any Tuesday at the Spirit Lake Senior Center, 32564 N. 4th Ave., 5 to 6:30pm.

NATURE’S RESPONSE TO WILDFIRE Most of us have seen lightning crack out of the clouds and hit the ground, but did you know only certain bolts can start a fire? There are two types of lightning: hot lightning and cold lightning. A bolt of cold lightning carries an intense electrical current but only lasts for a few thousandths of a second. Hot lightning has currents with less voltage but can last as long as a full second. One second isn’t a lot of time, but it is long enough to start a fire. Today, about 10 percent of wildfires are started by lightning strikes; the remaining 90 percent are caused by humans.
An opportunity for regeneration and growth By Mary Terra-Berns
ARISTOTLE WAS AN INTELLIGENT GUY. He is often credited with being the first genuine scientist in history. Not only was he smart, he was very observant and noted that nature is either at rest or is changing. Fire, along with other natural disturbances such as floods, landslides and earthquakes, can generate substantial change across the landscape. Fire, one of nature’s oldest phenomena, has left its fingerprint in petrified wood and coal deposits that formed around 350 million years ago. Although some fires back then were probably caused by volcanic eruptions, most were likely started by lightning strikes.
CDALivingLocal.com
28
Regardless of how a fire starts, the flames change the scenery. Last summer, several wildfires flared up in Northern Idaho; however, not nearly as many as the summer of 2015—one of the worst fire seasons on record in Idaho. Approximately 804,094 acres burned in Idaho in 2015, whereas in an average year about 577,700 acres are consumed by wildfires. Fires burn intensely in some areas while leaving other areas completely untouched, creating a patchwork of different habitats. Some fires are tenacious and can burn until the rain and snow of autumn and winter finally extinguish the flames. In spring,
as the Earth’s rotation slowly brings more sunlight, longer days, warmer temperatures and moisture in the form of melting snow and spring rain, we see another transformation, one not driven by infernos, but by new growth and regeneration. Nature, with patient persistence, will get to work with the business of restoring what was consumed by the flames, and doing it with grace and beauty. Change brings opportunity, right? Fire provides the opportunity for regeneration and growth of plant species that are fire-dependent. For example, some lodgepole pine cones are sealed with resin (serotinous cones) that traps the seeds inside until the cone is subjected to the heat from flames, which melts the resin and releases the seeds from the cone. Plant species that are shade-intolerant take advantage of increased sunlight in fire-created canopy openings that allow seedlings a place to thrive and out-compete shade-tolerant species. Burned vegetation and trees add nutrients to the soil that enhance plant growth, starting with those leafy herbaceous plants we call wildflowers and weeds. These quick germinating forbs take advantage of the new open ground and spring to life. For example, fireweed is characteristically the first to appear after the fire has past, often in a matter of days. This pioneer species quickly colonizes the slightly acidic soil left in the wake of a fire; thus, its name. Those long graceful stems with their burst of purplish-pink flowers are inspiring. And, as with Yellowstone National Park after the catastrophic fires in 1988, the Northern Idaho burn scars are likely to have a riot of wildflowers in the next two to five years. Grasses, with their extensive root systems that have survived in the soil, start sending up shoots as soon as the spring rains moisten the ground. Additionally, many plant species like willow, aspen and birch will regenerate from their roots that survived the heat and flames underground. Seeds that survived in the soil are combined with others deposited in animal droppings and those that are blown in on the wind. Fortunately for those of us who are wild harvesters, Morchella fungus survives wildfire through its extensive underground network of spider-web threads called mycelium that take in a rush of nutrients from burned vegetation and decomposing trees. The mycelium pushes fruiting bodies up above the soil creating a fairy forest of morel mushrooms. Local foragers are well aware of these morel “hot spots, which can be successful hunting grounds for a year or two after a fire.

These pioneer plants gradually set the stage for insects to colonize the area and start providing food for birds and small animals, which, of course, provide food for larger animals. In a relatively short amount of time, the burn scar shows incredible beauty in the details of its reconstructed diversity. This mosaic of new and existing growth supports a wide variety of wildlife species. Deer, elk and moose will feed on new shoots of grass and shrubs. Birds of prey will hunt in the burned areas, particularly along the edge with unburned areas where they nest. Dead and burned trees, called snags, may look lifeless, but often they are teeming with boring beetles and other insects. Woodpeckers focus on these snag forests to feed on the bugs and peck out nesting cavities. Other cavity dwellers, such as bluebirds and tree swallows, use these cavities after the woodpeckers move on. Seedeating birds take advantage of the lodgepole pine seeds that have been liberated from the cone. And, all those wildflowers attract
hummingbirds. Here again, change provides opportunity for some species. As Mother Nature works to recover the landscape, we will witness many successional changes from one year to the next. Fires have been part of the natural scheme of things for eons, and in our corner of the world, they have historically been very common. Trees that survive a fire record the history of the burn. Trees add a new layer of cells each year (a growth ring) that increases the size of the tree. When a tree is scorched during a fire, the burn scar is eventually encircled in the next growth ring, leaving a record of the fire history. Plants that have adapted over time to fire are important players in nature’s recovery from disturbance as it progresses to a resting state again. Nature’s ability to recover from disturbance is amazing, isn’t it? Aristotle put it simply, “In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.” Looking at the different shapes,

sizes and, in some cases, the unique structures of leaves on the deciduous plants alone is impressive. It is like taking a walk through a local art gallery and viewing the latest display of various artists’ work. And although it appears to us that nature is resting, change is still happening. There is some amazing photosynthetic work going on, and as a researcher trained in the scientific method, I acknowledge all of the evolution and microscopic cellular activity, but I prefer to just enjoy the marvelous, awe-inspiring magic of it all.

ICE GRANT FUNDS HEALTH-CARE TRAINING FOR MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIANS. BY KAYE THORNBRUGH.
EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE intimately involved in patient care, you may have never seen one on the patient-care floors of a hospital. That’s because the work of medical lab technicians takes place behind the scenes to provide physicians with the information they need to treat patients. In fact, around 70 percent of all medical decisions are based on information provided by medical lab technicians—not doctors or nurses. “I like to think of us as the detectives of the medical world,” said Sonja Nehr-Kanet, director of North Idaho College’s new Medical Laboratory Technician program. She wrote the curriculum for the hybrid program, which includes online courses anchored by on-campus labs. NIC’s program involves three full semesters and two summer courses, and includes an internship in a clinical setting. Upon completing the program, students are eligible to take national certification exams. The program was made possible by the Idaho Center of Excellence Healthcare Partnership—a $6.4 million Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant awarded by the U.S. Department
of Labor. In fact, the Medical Lab Technician program is just one of several health-care related programs funded by the grant. The mission of ICE is to create a stable health-care workforce for the state of Idaho. “Three colleges across the state of Idaho have partnered in the goal of changing how health-care education is delivered in Idaho,” said Drue Hatfield, project director of the ICE Healthcare Partnership. Idaho State University and Lewis-Clark State College are the other consortium partners. Medical lab technicians work in lab settings, conducting tests on specimens to aid in disease and illness diagnosis. MLTs may also set up and maintain medical lab equipment, prepare solutions or reagents to be combined with samples and collect blood or other samples from patients. The median annual wage for medical lab technicians was $38,970 in 2015. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is an 18-percent projected increase in MLT jobs through 2024—more than twice the average rate for all occupations. It is possible to “ladder up” from a job as an MLT with more education, Nehr-Kanet said. In fact, she intentionally designed the program to make it easy for students to transfer the credits they earn toward a bachelor’s degree. Nehr-Kanet said there is a national shortage of medical lab technicians. Employers are looking for competent, qualified lab professionals. Erik Fenenbock is a student in the MLT program. Prior to enrolling, he worked in a university as an adviser, and later in both admissions and advising at North Idaho College. “I loved working with students, but there was always a part of me that I felt was unexplored,” he said. “I’d always dreamed about the sciences and going into the medical field.” Attending a cadaver presentation, where the public was allowed to view the cadaver used by students in NIC’s human prosection class, renewed his interest. “I was looking at this cadaver and thought I was going to freak out or something,” Fenenbock said. “But it was so fascinating. I was surprised at my own reaction. I didn’t get light headed or anything. In fact, I threw on some gloves, walked over and started handling the cadaver.” The experience spurred Fenenbock to enroll in an anatomy and physiology course at NIC. He also began to contemplate a future career in the medical field. In December 2016, some of the students Fenenbock advised asked him about the new MLT program. Upon researching it, he determined that the program would be a great fit not only for his students, but for himself. It seemed so perfect, in fact, that he decided to quit his full-time job as an adviser at NIC and become a full-time student instead. Because Fenenbock wants to stay in Coeur d’Alene, working as an MLT is an even more attractive option. “We’re not saturated in medical lab technicians in this area,” he said. “There are great job opportunities.” For more information on the programs available through the Idaho Center of Excellent Healthcare Partnership, visit ICEHP.org or call 208.625.2307.

The first thing I found was nutritional fasting. My first thought was that fasting meant starving, which decreases metabolic function; I could not have been more wrong. no matter how healthy I ate, my hormones would not allow my body to burn fat as fuel. Despite my personal struggle, I continued to help scores of people feel and look better than they ever had. I just couldn’t help myself—until I discovered a few things that changed my life. The first thing I found was nutritional fasting. My first thought was that fasting meant starving, which decreases metabolic function; I could not have been more wrong. It is amazing how little the health-and-wellness community knows about fasting for health. Through different fasting protocols and now a ketogenic/paleo(ish) eating plan, I have healed my body enough that I am using fat as fuel. Ketogenic is a high-fat, moderate protein and low-carbohydrate plan that can teach your body to use your stored fat as its main source of energy. I have been able to finally start losing the weight I gained. I’m only halfway to my predisaster weight, but I’m finally getting there!
I also discovered LEVL, a countertop device that detects the concentration of a molecule (acetone) in exhaled breath. Previous clinical research demonstrates a correlation between the amount of acetone detected in the breath and body fat burned, giving you a reliable indicator of fat loss. I’m not the kind of person who likes to leave anything to chance. If I can find a way to detect what my body is burning for fuel, I am absolutely going to take advantage of it. This machine has not just been a gamechanger for me but for many of my clients as well. It is incredibly motivating to have realtime feedback that lets you know if the way you are eating and training is going to give you the results you are seeking. I cannot express how happy I am that I am finally getting back to normal. In retrospect, I can honestly say this experience has been turned out to be a positive one for me as a fitness professional. I now have more empathy and am empowered to help people on a level that I previously was unable to. I know what didn’t kill me made me … better.

4 WAYS TO GET MOVING GET OUT WHILE HAVING FUN AND BURNING CALORIES
JUST MOVE
Open Monday - Saturday 11:00am - 8:00pm
BY NATALIE DREGER, CERTIFIED FITNESS PROFESSIONAL
WHEN I TALK TO MY CLIENTS about exercise, this strange sense of pain and boredom comes across their face. They often talk themselves out of going to the gym or working out before they even get started. But here’s the deal; there are a variety of ways to burn calories and get in great shape than simply logging hours on a treadmill. Still rolling your eyes and wondering what the answer is? Here are four different options for you to shake things up a bit and do something different. 1. Pump up your bicycle tires and get outside. Go for a bike ride. We live in such a beautiful area with a lot of different bike trails. Pick a route that you have never been on before and go exploring. 2. Grab a buddy and go for a short hike. I’ve done this before with my girlfriend. We pack a few water bottles and protein bars and go for a short hike. Initially, the hike felt like it might take a long time out of our day, but once we got started, we talked the entire time and, before we knew it, we’d finished our hike and had fun while burning calories. Try it for yourself. I think you’ll be surprised how fast time flies. 3. Park further away. Think about all the extra calories you will burn simply by parking a little further away. Next time you go to the grocery store, instead of choosing a spot close to the entrance, park at the end of the parking lot. 4. Join an exercise program. When you are going to a scheduled exercise class with your girlfriends and you are having a good time, you are more likely to show up. You certainly don’t want to make a commitment and be the one who doesn’t show up.
After you’ve gone for a bike ride, a hike or hit your favorite exercise class with your friends, get the barbecue ready because I have a yummy recipe for you. When you think of spring, do you think of sitting out on the deck overlooking our beautiful lake while enjoying a tall glass of lemonade over ice, a nice tossed spinach salad sprinkled with feta cheese and, of course, a grilled burger? I certainly do, so I thought I would share one of my favorite recipes with you. Bacon Burger BAC ON BURGER • • • • • • • • • •
1lb lean ground beef 8 slices nitrate-free bacon, chopped ¼ cup cheddar cheese 2 tablespoons minced garlic ¼ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped 2 teaspoons black pepper 1 tablespoon soy sauce 2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 tablespoon Worcestershire
Take home some of our Market FRESH FISH for dinner tonight!
1. Cook all your bacon until crisp and drain on a paper towel and set aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef and everything except the cheese. Mix meat and spices together well (I use my hands) and form into burger patties. 3. Grill burgers outside on your barbecue or cook on your stovetop indoors. 4. Melt the cheese on top of your burger prior to serving. Delish.

STROKE AWARENESS RISK FACTORS, PREVENTION, TREATMENT AND RECOVERY
BY ROBIN HANSON OF BONNER GENERAL HEALTH IN SANDPOINT T EELA L -LTTAH L EY FT A ICPT O R S H
MANY OF US KNOW the warning signs of a stroke and understand the importance of seeking treatment immediately if we experience any of the signs: Face drooping, arm weakness or speech difficulty; this means it’s time to seek emergency medical treatment. Unfortunately, many stroke patients wait until they are past the timeframe to receive treatment that could reverse or lessen many of the effects of the stroke. Up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable, but awareness is key. There are four key points of stroke awareness: risk factors, prevention, treatment and recovery. Controllable Risk Factors: • High Blood Pressure. This is the leading cause of stroke and the most significant controllable risk factor. • Diabetes. If you have diabetes (Type 1 or 2), keep your blood sugar controlled. • Obesity and Excess Body Weight. These are linked with an increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. • High Cholesterol • Sickle Cell Disease • Carotid Artery Disease
• • • •
Peripheral Artery Disease Atrial Fibrillation Other heart diseases and conditions Excessive Alcohol Intake and Illegal Drug Use
Uncontrollable Risk Factors: Some risk factors for stroke are uncontrollable but are still very important to be aware of, including: • • • •
Age Race Gender Prior Stroke
Prevention: Know your numbers! It is important to know your blood pressure, weight and cholesterol to know if you are at risk of a stroke. Some steps to prevent a stroke are: • Increase your physical activity. • If you use tobacco, take the steps to quit. • Improve your diet.

Treatment: Strokes occur when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked (occlusive stroke) or ruptures (hemorrhagic stroke). The effects of the stroke can be catastrophic and permanent depending on the amount of brain tissue depleted of vital circulation, length of time and the location inside the brain itself. A clot-dissolving drug called tPA can significantly reduce or reverse the effects of an occlusive stroke. In order to be eligible for tPA, a patient needs a brief, thorough review by a physician to rule out contraindications and other symptoms that could mimic a stroke. An immediate CT scan of the brain is required to rule out a bleed (hemorrhagic stroke), which is an absolute contraindication for tPA administration. Emergency treatment must be sought right away since time equals tissue loss, and the medication must be given within three to four-and-a-half hours after symptoms start. The sooner tPA is given, the greater the possibility of a better outcome after a stroke. It is imperative to contact 911 immediately so that advanced care can be initiated en route to the emergency department by paramedics,

thus saving time and tissue. Stroke patients have a much better chance for recovery due to Telestroke network technology available at Bonner General Health. Stroke specialists at Sacred Heart Medical Center are available 24 hours a day to evaluate patient symptoms via a two-way audio and video interactive device. The stroke specialist is able to interact with the patient, emergency department physicians and staff, as well as view the CT scan simultaneously. It is through this technology that we can provide the specialized expertise of a larger tertiary care facility in our local emergency department. In some cases, a LVO (large vessel occlusion) can be identified, and the patient can be rapidly transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center to have the clot endovascularly retrieved, restoring circulation to the affected portion of the brain.

CAMPING IN STYLE OR LIVING IN THE LAP OF LUXURY • BY PATTY HUTCHENS WHETHER YOU WANT TO ROUGH IT, ROUGH IT IN STYLE OR STAY IN STYLE AND LUXURY, THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS FOR ANY BUDGET AND TASTE. A SIMPLE SEARCH WILL BRING UP A VARIETY OF OPTIONS, BUT HOW WILL YOU KNOW WHICH ONE’S THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU? WE’VE PICKED OUT A FEW OPTIONS ON THE FOLLOWING PAGES TO HELP YOU NARROW IT DOWN SO YOUR SUMMER CAN BE SPENT YOUR WAY!
CDALivingLocal.com
43
Camping There is nothing better than being in the outdoors, especially when you live in the Northwest! Whether you choose to “rough it” in a tent or prefer to take a camper, there are plenty of campgrounds that provide a beautiful outdoor experience. Before choosing your campsite, decide what amenities are important to you. Are you looking for a place that has minimal resources, or do you prefer a campground that provides easy access to showers and restrooms? Also, make sure you reserve your spot ahead of time. If you are bringing multiple tents or a tent and an RV, be sure you reserve enough space.
Hotel It’s the traditional way, but it is always fun! With so many booking websites to choose from, even the most luxurious hotels can be affordable! With the increase in options when it comes to lodging, hotels are offering more deals. If you are not tied to a specific date, research the rates throughout the week as they vary greatly depending on numerous factors. If you are traveling with kids, many hotels offer breakfast included in the room rate. If you do a lot of traveling, you will want to consider different reward programs that allow you to accumulate free nights.

VRBO Renting a condo or a house can be a lot of fun and provide all the comforts of home. There are several options available in communities that also have a pool where you can relax and enjoy some sunshine while the kids burn off some energy. If you are traveling with other families or plan to go with a group of friends, this option can be very affordable. In addition, you can save money by purchasing groceries and eating in. Some of the condos and homes for rent around the Gorge Amphitheater in Central Washington are a pickup spot for transportation to and from the venue.
Depending upon the size of both you and your vehicle, this is an option many on a tight budget choose. Be aware, however, that safety is a key issue. Choose a place that is a bit out of the way, but not so isolated that it is unsafe. Also, make sure to minimize the time you spend in your vehicle. While old station wagons with fold down seats were perfect for creating a “bed, newer cars do not have the ability to recline as much as older cars did. If your car has rear seats that fold down and provide trunk access, this can provide a larger space in which to stretch out. Enjoy the adventure!

45
On Location For many, once they reach their destination, they want to give up the car keys and just stay put. Places like the Gorge Amphitheater in Central Washington offer an on-site campground that allows people to come and enjoy the music, whether it is a night or a weekend festival, without ever having to leave. For large events such as Bumpershoot in Seattle, there are several nearby hotels that are just blocks away from the action, which enhances the festival feeling.

TRAVEL & LEISURE
GARDEN OF THE
GODS
EXPERIENCE THE NATURAL BEAUTY FOUND IN COLORADO SPRINGS
BY COLIN ANDERSON
T
he mile-high city is the gateway to some of the most famous mountains in the country. In the wintertime, there are almost as many ski and snowboard bags coming through the airport as actual luggage. People arrive and often immediately head west toward Snowmass Village, Aspen, Breckenridge and Telluride. In the summer, locals head north of town to nearby Boulder and Fort Collins as a starting point for biking, fly fishing and hiking. The beauty of Estes Park, the famous Stanley Hotel and Rocky Mountain National Park draws visitors from around the world. With all to do north and west of Denver, the south often gets overlooked, but savvy outdoor enthusiasts know of a very special place not far off the beaten path. Colorado Springs is perhaps best known as the home of the Air Force Academy and the U.S. Olympic Training Center, but just outside of downtown you’ll find one of the more unique natural areas in the West in the Garden of the Gods. Garden of the Gods is a registered National Natural Landmark that encompasses some 1,300 acres right in the backyard of Colorado Springs. The natural area is famous for towering sandstone formations with Pikes Peak as the backdrop. There are endless activities to do here, and unbelievably, admission is completely free.
Visitor & Nature Center Before venturing off into the park, make the time to stop in at the visitor center for some background information on what you are about to experience. Here you will find exhibits on local geology, flora and fauna, what animals you might discover in the park and a history of native people who inhabited the lands. There is also a dinosaur on display that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. There are interactive maps and fliers to help you plan your trip. Traveling within the Park There are many ways to get around once you’re inside the park, and it all depends on what you are most comfortable with and how much time you have. You can drive yourself to many of the park’s highlights or choose one of several guided options. One fun way to experience the park is by a bus tour. This is no ordinary tour bus, as each bus was built in 1909 and is more like a trolley with open-air seating for 14, offering great views along the way. These tours last 45 minutes and are $17 per person. Booking a Jeep tour will get you into places others can’t, and tours range from 75 to 90 minutes and start at $30 per person. You can even see the park through a guided Segway tour which features several

stops and plenty of historical information all at a leisurely pace. For those wanting to keep the experience as affordable as possible, there are both self-guided and free-guided nature walks. Led by local naturalists and volunteers, these nature walks run every 30 minutes with each guide offering different historical perspectives about the Garden of the Gods.

Outdoor Activities While many come for a glimpse of the scenery, others are looking to add in some exercise and explore as many corners of the park as possible. There are about 15 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails within Garden of the Gods. They range from short and easy ½ mile trails like the Ridge Trail, which climbs about 100 feet to give you a higher perspective of the surrounding towering sandstone formations, to the 3-mile Chambers/Bretag/Palmer trail, which circles a large portion of the park through rocky trails. As with all natural areas, hikers and bikers are to stay on designated trails as to not disrupt local vegetation or create additional erosion issues.

Rock Climbing With so many formations within Garden of the Gods, the area has become a beacon for seasoned rock climbers as well as those interested in attempting the sport for the first time. If you are comfortable in your abilities, you can pick up a map at the visitors’ office and select a climb that challenges you. New climbers can arrange with local companies who can help determine skill level and where the best locations will be. There are designated routes set up all over the park, and luckily, if someone is already tackling the face you were interested in, there are dozens of other faces and formations to scale. While climbing is free, all climbers do need to register for a permit, which can be done at the visitors’ center or online before you go. If you happen to be in town or visiting a park on a Thursday, you can do the weekly 5k run with the locals. Park volunteers have carved out five different 5k routes, and you can choose whichever course you would like. Runners go anytime between 4 and 6pm, and like most everything else in the park, it’s free to participate. Those looking for additional history on how the area’s unique formations

The film takes you back more than one billion years, showing what the area looked like and some of the dinosaurs and other creatures that inhabited it. The 20-minute movie is $6 for adults and $4 for children. After a day of sightseeing, hiking, climbing or biking, stop by the café for a drink and a bite to eat. With more than two-million annual visitors to Garden of the Gods, it’s no secret that this is a special place. Since its discovery in the late 1800s, visitors have been inspired by the one-of-a-kind landscapes available so close to town. Organized competitive runs and road races are held inside the park, as those who enjoy outdoor activities tend to enjoy them even more in such a beautiful setting. Garden of the Gods is a photographer’s dream, with an immense amount of contrast in colors, shades and angles, all with snowcapped mountains as a backdrop. There are many species of birds that make the area home as well as foxes, deer and bighorn sheep, all just an hour and a half from the moment you leave the airport.

If your next ski trip or summer adventure takes you through Denver, schedule a day to head south and see this incredibly unique natural area. Whether by foot, bike or vehicle, you’ll be amazed by your surroundings and will leave with some incredible photos and memories as well.
