CLEAN ENERGY for a CLEAN WORLD
Steve Russo, Publisher
Executive Director steve@like-media.comA Season to Celebrate Those We Love and Remember and Honor Those Lost
As we make our way through spring and into summer, we find ourselves celebrating those important people in our lives, and honoring those who sacrificed their lives for us.
Mother’s Day, always held the second Sunday in May, is May 14 this year, while Father’s Day is June 18, the third Sunday of June. These days are set aside for us all to take the time to truly reflect back on all our parents, or guardians, have done for us—and continue to do. Motherhood and fatherhood can feel like thankless callings at times, but know that your role is so important in your child’s life, and you are raising those who will lead others one day—whether families of their own, a business, a nonprofit. The sky’s the limit, and it starts at home.
On Monday, May 29, we honor and remember those who lost their lives serving our nation in order to keep this place we call home a land of the free. Our families, our communities, our nation, will forever be indebted to those men and women who served selflessly for all of humanity.

BRICK, STONE AND CONCRETE
Which is best for your next home update?
Dorothy said it best: “There’s no place like home.” And, while appearance certainly doesn’t make a house a home, it helps when you’re hoping to preserve and build equity in that home. The style, design and materials of a home should be taken into account when updating it. Whether doing a DIY fireplace restoration or resurfacing an exterior accent, it’s all about the finishes.
Natural stone, brick and various forms of concrete have been used as building materials for thousands of years. As a natural element, stone can lower your heart rate and elicit a sense of peace. The symmetrical lines of brickwork are both artistic and grounding. Concrete brings versatility and unique architectural elements while giving spaces a minimalist, urban-industrial vibe.
Materials like brick, stone and concrete are great options to add texture to a dated or dull area when updating your home’s aesthetic. Deciding which material is right for you depends on your home, project and budget. Here’s everything you need to know when choosing which option is best for your home.
Natural Stone
From the Egyptian pyramids to the Roman Colosseum and the Washington Monument, humans have used stone to build durable, elegant structures for centuries. As a building material, stone is fire resistant, long lasting,
and able to withstand nature’s elements. As a natural resource, stone connects us to the earth, while the unique beauty and various colors, shapes and sizes of each stone allow for artistic flexibility.
Including stone in your design can drastically upgrade the look and increase the value of your home. While images of quaint English stone cottages might come to mind, adding stone to a fireplace or as an exterior accent may be a more manageable approach—unless you have the urge to start knocking down walls. Additionally, natural stone is extremely heavy and one of the more expensive choices. For that reason, modern designers, builders and homeowners often opt for stone veneer, which emulates the beauty of natural stone without the high cost.
From covering the entire exterior facade with stone to adding thoughtful stone accents throughout the interior or exterior, there are countless ways to use stone in your home upgrade. Stone columns make a porch entryway a focal point, or adding stone siding on just the lower level of a home with some other accents creates a high-end, cohesive look.
Regardless of which you choose—natural stone or stone veneer—there are a variety of colors, shapes, sizes and textures, all of which will transform the look of your home.
Brick
One of the most popular building materials in US history, even “The 3 Little Pigs” told us brick is a superior building material for homes. Made from combining clay and shale, bricks are extremely durable and resilient to fire and extreme weather conditions. Homes that include bricks provide a feeling of comfort and safety to those within, and the versatile colors and textures allow for unique and detailed architectural designs.
Using brick as a primary structural building material should be considered at the time of construction and completed by a professional brick mason. While bricks tend to be at a lower price point than natural stone, the cost is still quite high. Between the added steps in the brick production process, the heaviness and subsequent transportation difficulty, and the need for professional installation, including brick as
an accent is often a more feasible option. Like stone, a brick veneer is often used for aesthetics rather than structural support. Though not as durable as solid brick, brick veneer is better at keeping moisture away from the exterior wall and tends to last decades longer than traditional siding.
Whether on the exterior of a home or as an interior accent for hearths and fireplaces, brick offers unlimited creativity in addition to increasing your home value. Highlight the details of your home by installing brick on the gable, dormer, and one section of the facade, or build a garden wall around your patio and create a private patio oasis.
Depending on the specifics of your project, you may be limited to either solid brick or stone veneer. Whatever you choose, the design options, visual interest and timeless charm that bricks provide add character to any space.
Brick offers unlimited creativity in addition to increasing your home value.
Concrete
Using concrete as a building material is nothing new; in fact, Thomas Edison designed and built the first concrete homes in 1908. Due to the strength, durability and fire resistance, Edison predicted a boost in homes built with concrete. Over 100 years later, homes constructed with concrete are known to have many benefits, including being more energy-efficient, better at controlling temperature fluctuations, minimizing noise, and economically valuable. Concrete-style homes are also the epitome of modern minimalistic design.
The decision to build an entire house with concrete is one to be made prior to construction, but incorporating concrete in different aspects of your home has increased in popularity.
Homeowners are adding concrete inside their homes, installing accent walls, concrete countertops, and embracing concrete floors.
The do-it-yourself ability of concrete combined with the markedly reduced cost has definitely caused an increase in concrete as a building material. No longer limited to the garage floor, for those who love the sleek, modern-minimalist style, concrete makes a statement both interior and exterior.
When updating your home, it’s important to include features that you love. Seeing the changes in and around your home should make you feel proud and want to click your heels like Dorothy.

Six swoon-worthy color palettes for your home
There’s something about the sun’s direction and intensity as we head into early summer that shines a spotlight on even the slightest hint of drabness. Pair that with the inspiration sparked by the prospect of summer, and you might find yourself staring at a wall of color swatches, considering paint colors.
Updating the paint colors in your home is a relatively quick way to make a huge impact on how your house looks and feels. A couple of coats of paint can hide that gloomy wall color from the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns and turn your space into one that is warm and modern. Updating outdated or weathered exterior paint or adding a bold color to your front door can instantly increase your home’s curb appeal.
The transformation that fresh paint can make is undeniable, but choosing the right colors can be downright dreadful. To help ease that dread, we’ve talked to interior designers and paint color experts at Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams to bring you six color palettes that are sure to revive your home’s color vibe.
BAKED TERRACOTTA
Earthy and Grounded
When it comes to Earth tones, gone are the days of dull browns and brassy beiges. Shades like Benjamin Moore’s Baked Terracotta (#1202) in the dining room or on lower kitchen cabinets add color while exuding a feeling of warmth and groundedness. A neutral beige like Manchester Tan (HC-81) as a flow color ties in the terracotta with an emerald sage such as Peale Green (HC-121) in the office. Finish this palette with Sherwin Williams’ White Flour (SW7102) trim and an accent color, such as Warm Brownie (2101-30) for a cohesive wholehouse color palette.
Modern Minimalist
Minimalist styles begin on a neutral foundation, but they’re not limited to shades of white. Natural hues found in wood and stone are a great place to start when considering minimalist colors for the interior or exterior of your home. A neutral base color, such as Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl (2137-60) with White Dove (OC-17) trim, allows you to easily incorporate other pops of color. Add Hale Navy (HC -154) for the kitchen island or monochromatic office and Chelsea Gray (HC-168) for powder room cabinets or to coordinate with brick on your exterior.
Warm and Inviting
Traditional colors representing warmth are dark, saturated hues in the red, orange, gold or brown family, but the deepest shades of cool colors can be very comforting. Entryway walls painted with Benjamin Moore’s Yellowstone (HC-10) with Cotton Balls (OC-122) wainscoting invites people in. Adding America’s Heartland (#197) as a flow color extends the warmth from the entry and ties in Nightshade (2116-10) on the kitchen island. Racoon Hollow (#978) in the bathroom or office pulls the interior look together but is also a versatile exterior color option.
Vibrant and Lively
After several years of cool color trends, vibrant colors are making a big comeback. Benjamin Moore’s 2023 color of the year, Raspberry Blush (2008-30), is a bold statement color that energizes a room or front door. Include other rich colors like their Wenge (AF-180) for a moody bathroom or exterior accent color and North Sea Green (2053-30) in the formal dining room for a more balanced feeling. Coupling Stone Harbor (2111-50) for the flow walls or main exterior paint and White Heron (OC-57) for trim helps highlight the vibrant colors without making them seem overwhelming.

Calm and Relaxing
Hues of green can reduce anxiety, invite harmony and bring the serenity of nature indoors. A fresh green/blue/gray shade like Benjamin Moore’s Hollingsworth Green (HC-141) on lower kitchen cabinets radiates relaxation while adding a deep green like Sherwin Williams’ Billiard Green (SW 0016) in the office or powder room is reminiscent of a peaceful rainforest retreat. Warm white colors like Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee (OC-45) on the walls and crisp white Chantilly Lace (OC-65) on the trim paired with soft charcoal Wrought Iron (212410) accents complement the interior green shades and highlight the colors of nature when used on the exterior.
Classic and Timeless
Finding a color palette that can transcend time and bringing in color with furniture, art or wallpaper is always in style. Sherwin Williams’ neutral greige shades like Agreeable Gray (SW 7029) for walls or cabinets and Pure White (SW 7005) on trim are versatile options that coordinate well with warm or cool tones. A monochrome design in Dovetail (SW 7018) for the dining or powder room adds elegance, while a chameleon hue, like Seasalt (SW 6204), adds depth by appearing to change color depending on the light. Finish this palette with Iron Ore (SW 7069) interior accents or as a dramatic exterior color.
Caring For All Your Tree Needs
“Kevin just left my house and was fantastic to say the least. Very professional and honest. He was hired to do my dishwasher, stove top and sink which has acquired scratches over time. My sink and dishwasher look like new. He was very polite, and QUICK! I am a busy bee and that was a total plus! He was on time and I would 100% recommend him and use him again for scratches on my stainless steel appliances!”

Popular for providing the chance to take a close look at one-of-akind vehicles, Saturday’s classic car show presents an interactive, family friendly event for car enthusiasts of all kinds. Additional attractions and unique contests will take place throughout the day, highlighting unique vehicles and new industry talent. A new addition to Car d’Lane for 2023 will be motorcycles featured as part of Saturday’s car show event.
The new Coeur d’Moto Alley will feature a showcase of vintage, rare motorcycles, highlighting a selection of classics from the local motorcycle communities to enjoy for enthusiasts, riders and builders alike. So far, the local community has had a positive response to the idea of motorcycles being added to the event, says Chloe Linton of the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association. “We’ve heard a lot of positive things. We’d really like to get at least 50 motorcycles— registration is live on our website, for both cars and motorcycles,

Friday night’s highly anticipated car cruise will kick off the weekend. Spectators can gather to watch the classic cruisers take to Sherman Avenue from 6 to 9pm.
“Show off your pride and joy to the excited crowds as they line the streets of downtown Coeur d’Alene,” the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association invites. “Spectators will feel the rumbling engines, see roaring flames, and hear the beeping of old-style horns as the cars parade through the downtown corridor.”
Participating cruisers will travel west on Lakeside from Eighth Street, north up Fourth Street, west on Wallace, south on Second, and then east up Sherman Avenue.
Saturday, June 17, will see classic cars and trucks from 1980 and earlier lining the streets of downtown Coeur d’Alene in the Show & Shine from 8am to 4pm.
“Shined and ready for the show, you can take a look up close at these one-of-a-kind vehicles, hear the history from the owners, and take a look at the engine,” the Downtown Association describes. A wide variety of cars and trucks will be on display, with over 400 vehicles predicted to attend.
Throughout their visit to the car show, guests can stop by the Young Builders Alley, Special Interest Lane, and the new addition for 2023, the Coeur d’Moto Alley.

The 2023 Special Interest Lane will feature a limited number of unique, specialized vehicles that are from 1981 or later, including race cars and high-performance cars. Applications are carefully reviewed for Special Interest Lane, as space is limited for this exclusive category. (This category is participation only and will not be judged.)
Car d’Lane awards will be presented on Saturday, June 17 at 3:30pm, at Fifth and Sherman. Many awards are available to win, including Hottest Flames, Best Muscle Car, Slickest Paint, and People’s Choice, along with the best of each decade beginning in the 1930s.

Teacher in the Spotlight
KAT WADDELL SOUSER Kindergarten | Skyway Elementary
by TAYLOR SHILLAMSkyway Elementary kindergarten teacher Kat Waddell Souser has been teaching for 18 years and can say with confidence that she chose the right profession. “Teaching is my calling. I love it. It is so rewarding and so very challenging,” she says.
“Over the past two decades, education has undergone incredible changes, some for the better and some that make the simple act of teaching almost impossible at times. I still love it,” she describes. “Every day, we laugh, overcome challenges, learn something new, and grow as a community.”
Her favorite time of day is about 3:40pm, when the students have just gone home and the class is quiet. “It is a beautiful time for reflection and honoring all of the hard work that has been done by all members of the learning community,” she shares.
Kat says there have been many experiences to transform her into the educator she is today. “Perhaps one of the most pivotal adventures I have been part of over the last few years is being part of the Lab Host Network (LHN). This professional learning community has allowed me to become a more reflective, confident, humble and striving teacher.”
Last October, her class hosted a lab comprised of fellow teachers and coaches. “It was such a
blast to watch our learning community show off their thinking and independence,” she describes. “Later that day, we reflected, and the students were so proud of their thinking and modeling. The class takes pride in the fact that they are helping educators to learn and grow in their practice as we grow in ours.”
Kat notes that everything a teacher does is done with a specific purpose. “Often, people confuse public educators with babysitters. As a public educator, everything we teach, every activity, is specifically geared toward a standard or a goal or a developmentally appropriate skill.”
Kat describes her class as play-based kindergarten, where students have voice and choice—but those choices are well crafted to meet learning standards. “Students practice life-worthy skills like cooperation, accepting no, asking permission, and taking ownership of their actions, all while learning to add within 10 and put spaces between their words,” she says.
They also learn confidence in themselves. “I tell my students every day that they are loved,” Kat affirms. “We practice words of affirmation that include phrases like ‘I am strong!’ ‘I am loved!’ ‘I am capable!’ ‘I can do hard things!’ These phrases become more than just words—they become internalized and help students believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.”
STUDENTS IN
by TAYLOR SHILLAM Andrew Karns SeniorCoeur d’Alene High School (CHS) senior Andrew Karns is a twotime All-Inland Empire League (IEL) infielder and shortstop for the Vikings baseball team. Andrew is wellversed in hard work, with continued success on the field, in the classroom, even pursuing innovative business opportunities on his own.
On the field, he has learned how to make a strong return from difficult setbacks.
“One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in baseball is overcoming a meniscus repair and, a year later, a re-tear and second surgery,” he says. “These surgeries really pushed me back behind my competition, and I had to learn patience and hard work through physical therapy.”
In the classroom, Andrew enjoys math and science classes and currently holds a 3.81 weighted GPA at CHS. Following graduation, his sights are set on schooling in Hawaii.
“I plan to play baseball at Chaminade
University in Honolulu, Hawaii,” he says. “I am going to be playing with a Lake City competitor and close friend Joe Decoeur, who will be catching there.”
Andrew hasn’t yet decided on a career path but knows he wants to continue pursuing what he loves. “I am drawn toward business and math,” he says, and plans to major in business in college.
Independently, he’s already demonstrated his knack for business and creative ways to make an income.
“As a young kid, I always tried to find ways to make money, from finding and selling golf balls to shoveling neighbors’ driveways during snowstorms,” he says. “Currently, as a side job, I go thrift shopping and garage-sale shopping and make money reselling those items online.”
Along with his various successes, Andrew has become comfortable with the concept of failure.
“One life lesson I’ve learned from baseball is that failure is okay,” Andrew says. “In baseball, more than half the time, you fail. The best players in the world fail most of the time in this sport—so you have to train yourself mentally to be okay with failing, because it’s just part of the game, and part of life.”
That training is what he enjoys most about his sport: the ongoing challenge that invites continued learning and growth.
“The thing I like most about the sport of baseball is that there are so many aspects of the game that can always be improved, which makes it challenging,” he describes, “including hitting, fielding, base running, or overall IQ.”
“YOU HAVE TO TRAIN YOURSELF MENTALLY TO BE OKAY WITH FAILING, BECAUSE IT’S JUST PART OF THE GAME, AND PART OF LIFE.”
THE SPOTLIGHT
Clara Tenbrink SeniorLake City High School (LCHS) senior Clara Tenbrink has enjoyed a high school career balancing music and academics. As an active participant in the school’s music program, she has lettered in orchestra four times, participated in three state-qualifying ensembles, and performed one state-qualifying solo.
“Academics have been a main focus of mine, and I have taken a majority of AP, Honors, and dual-credit classes, earning a GPA of 4.198,” she says.
Clara says an important life lesson a teacher gave her was how to find balance. “Put in as much work as you can, but no more than you can handle,” she says. “It’s important to work hard at things in order to succeed and grow, but if you push yourself too hard, you’ll end up sliding backward.”
Learning not to push herself further than she could go has helped her find success both in school and in her personal life, she says. Due to being a student through the pandemic, Clara’s also learned how to return from a setback.
“Like most students, leaving school suddenly set me back significantly. I lost my time management skills, and it was much harder to find the motivation to be a good student when we returned to normal school,” Clara describes. “It was also hard on my mental health to not have extracurricular activities to participate in. I ended up burnt out and struggling to keep up with my schoolwork among a sea of other priorities.”
To overcome this, Clara had to re-learn the study skills and time management strategies she had before the pandemic. “I also had to be intentional with where I put my time and energy,” she says. “Once I did, it was much easier to be the student I knew I could be.”
Clara will attend Utah State University in the fall of 2023 to study economics with a pre-law emphasis. She then plans to attend law school.
“I am most interested in becoming a lawyer,” Clara says. “Criminal law is very interesting to me, and I would love to be a federal prosecuting attorney. I have also thought about corporate law, as it would align with my undergraduate plan.”
Until then, Clara will continue enjoying her favorite aspect of school at Lake City: the community. “School is a unique time in your life when you see the same group of people every day for a number of years,” she says. “The time we spend together builds a special sense of belonging and friendship. Even though we may not all be the best of friends, we spend a lot of time with the people in our graduating class, and I have enjoyed the sense of community that comes with that.”
“IT’S IMPORTANT TO WORK HARD AT THINGS IN ORDER TO SUCCEED AND GROW, BUT IF YOU PUSH YOURSELF TOO HARD, YOU’LL END UP SLIDING BACKWARD.”
MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR
THE WORLD
Sandpoint-headquartered energy organization sets sights on lofty clean energy goals
With world-class energy experts in leadership positions, a network of subsidiary companies around the world and teams of researchers and scientists developing clean energy solutions, Make a Difference (MAD) Energy finds itself on the bleeding edge of some of the most innovative clean energy technologies in existence today. In its three years of existence, MAD has raised $100 million in investment funding and created strategic partnerships across the globe, setting in motion the initial phases of the organization’s mission to produce “clean, abundant and affordable energy for the world.”
Admittedly, many of MAD’s ambitions might sound grand and wideranging, but that was the emphasis from the beginning, according to Chief Marketing Officer Christian Fioravanti.
“We love the idea of Sandpoint, Idaho, being the headquarters for a company that is going to impact the world,” Christian stated. “The comparison to Elon Musk, Starlink, and some of the big things that he is doing … We believe a company like that—like a SpaceX—can be here in Sandpoint. And that’s MAD.”
MAD Energy was founded in February 2020 by successful international attorney and businessman George Wentz.
Having operated in the energy sector for more than 40 years and represented some of the world’s largest oil and gas companies,
George has developed a knack for looking beyond the surface level and addressing the root challenges humanity faces today regarding energy production and distribution.
Access to energy can impact everything from food production to currency fluctuation. According to a recent study conducted by Our World Data, more than 750 million people still do not have access to electricity today, and 3 billion—or 40 percent of the world’s population—have no access to clean fuels for cooking.
For George, Christian and the entire team at MAD, finding solutions that provide abundant and affordable energy to individuals around the globe is at the heart of everything they do.
“We are developing both large infrastructure energy projects while at the same time developing research and development technologies that have the potential to really impact the people of this world in a big way,” Christian added.
One of these projects currently being negotiated and set into motion is a MAD subsidiary company called Firebird LNG, which is aiming to plant a liquefied natural gas (LNG) site in the resource-rich Guyana-Suriname Basin.
Working in partnership with the Surinamese government, MAD has received the necessary permits and approvals to begin construction on the 1,500-hectare site that will house one of the first greenfield LNG facilities in the world.
by CHRISTIAN WEANERthe hands of the people.
“We are very close to hitting the key milestones to kick off that whole project off and to not only help lift up the people of Suriname and bring them to a first-world status very quickly because of this single project,” Christian described, “but we are also going to be aiding Europe, which is in desperate need of natural gas.”
Another strategic partnership that MAD sees as a primary fixture in achieving its goals moving forward is with ADACEN, whose CEO, Lt. General Jon M. Davis, is the chair of MAD’s Strategic Advisory Board.
ADACEN has an exclusive contract with MAD, making MAD Energy the organization’s sole Power Integrator as it begins to roll out a global web of next-generation data center infrastructure.
A third, and possibly the most intriguing, project that MAD is currently working toward is developing a new technology designed to allow for wireless energy transmission based on the ideas of Nikola Tesla.
“MAD Energy is going to be the company that commercializes modernday Nikola Tesla wireless energy transmission towers,” Christian said. “And we are going to be able to bring safe energy and data transmission to the world.”
Ultimately, in everything MAD does, the organization’s primary goal is to put the power back into the hands of the people. One primary way MAD accomplishes this goal is by funding itself entirely through retail and accredited investors.
“Not only is MAD funded by the people—because we wanted to bring the people in to [reap] the reward that comes from this [instead of] big oil companies or Wall Street,” Christian said, “but we also plan to allow for investments into our subsidiary companies as well, by both retail and accredited investors.”
As MAD continues expanding and furthering its global clean energy projects, the organization hopes to encourage prosperity in North Idaho, North Africa and everywhere in between.
“Something very special is being done here [at MAD],” Christian noted. “And it is the coolest thing ever, to me, that it’s headquartered in Sandpoint, Idaho, because I look forward to seeing some of those external benefits supporting this area because of the success of this company.”
If you want to learn more about how you can invest in the mission of MAD Energy, contact Head of Investor Relations Mat MacDonald at 208.627.9390 or mat@madenergy.com.

ANNUAL REALLY BIG RAFFLE
North Idaho College Foundation’s biggest fundraiser is under way
by JILLIAN CHANDLEREach year, since 1994, a unique fundraising event affords Idaho residents the chance to win a brand new home. And it’s as simple as purchasing a raffle ticket. North Idaho College (NIC) Foundation’s 30th annual Really BIG Raffle—the foundation’s largest annual public fundraiser—is now underway, and tickets will surely sell out like in previous years.
“The Really BIG Raffle is a fun event that community members look forward to participating in year after year,” shares Hannah Matchell, development specialist for the NIC Foundation. “The chance to win amazing prizes, while helping local students, really resonates across a broad spectrum of the community. The event has a very loyal community supporter base, and many participants have been purchasing tickets for decades.”
This year’s home is in the Coeur d’Alene Place Community, a location providing easy access to schools, shopping, and all the wonderful things there are to do in Coeur d’Alene. The home (which can be viewed online) is a 2,652-square-foot rancher with a large bonus room. The modern floor plan features vaulted ceilings, a gas fireplace, quartz countertops throughout, and a large covered back patio. The home’s value is estimated at $587,000. “This is definitely a house anyone would be thrilled to win,” affirms Hannah.
The home, from planning to completion, typically takes a little less than a year. As Hannah notes, community sponsors are key to the success of this fundraiser. For 2023, Greenstone Homes is the event’s title sponsor, providing a significant donation to the NIC Foundation for the fundraiser; Washington Trust Bank and Cole Concrete are major sponsors; and there are many additional sponsors that can be found on the website.
In past years, the home served as a hands-on learning experience for students under the direction of the NIC Carpentry and Construction Technology Program instructor, and in collaboration with regional subcontractors. “This year has been a transition year for the program, as it is being retooled to better match industry needs,” states Hannah. “The college is excited to be moving the program from the learning experience of building a home from the ground up to becoming a new Construction Management twoyear transfer program that would have articulated curriculum that aligns directly with Boise State University and can also tie into other regional Construction Management programs.”
Raffle tickets are priced $150 each, and a maximum of 5,000 tickets will be sold. Idaho residents can reserve their tickets online at NIC.edu/rbr or by calling 208.769.3271. There are also several community outlets selling raffle tickets in person, including all North Idaho Super 1 Foods locations, Yoke’s Fresh Market in Post Falls, Stein’s Family Foods in Osburn, Buck Knives, NIC Foundation and NIC Workforce Training Center. Tickets are on sale now and will be available until they sell out—the raffle sells out each and every year, so don’t wait to get yours.
Additional prizes include a new 2023 car, a $2,000 home furniture gift card, and a Traeger smoker/meat package.
“The North Idaho College Foundation would like to share a heartfelt thank you to all of the amazing supporters that have kept this fundraiser going for 30 years!” smiles Hannah.
Show your support to the North Idaho College Foundation, as all proceeds go to support student success and educational excellence throughout North Idaho College … and you could walk away with keys to a new home! The winning ticket will be drawn virtually, by a third-party auditor from a certified accounting firm, at 7pm on Wednesday, July 12.
The NIC Foundation is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. In 2021-22, NIC Foundation provided $1.2 million to the college for scholarship awards and over $260,000 in program enrichment.

The perfect pairing to sell your home
“We are extremely client-focused, and our heart is to help others and establish good relationships in the community.”
by JILLIAN CHANDLERAttracted to North Idaho for its natural beauty and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, along with the freedom found here, Mark and Lindsay Booze moved their family to the Coeur d’Alene area in August of 2019.
Both hold master’s degrees and worked in special education, serving students with special needs and their families—including two years in the Coeur d’Alene School District. Lindsay also has an extensive background in interior design and home staging, having staged homes for another company for eight years prior to education. She holds a degree in interior design and staging certifications from ASP and IAHSP. In addition to working in education, Mark spent nearly a decade in business-to-business sales (B2B) for lighting/electrical contractors, conducting business with some of the most reputable companies in the nation, selling and ensuring successful completion of high-dollar commercial lighting projects and maintenance contracts.
As so many people do, they long dreamed of the opportunity to be self-employed. And like so many of us, having the responsibility of raising their children caused hesitance in pursuing that dream.
“Around the time that COVID was at its peak, an opportunity arose, and we decided to go for it,” recalls Lindsay. “With my background in design and staging, the decision was easy, and we launched Elle B. Home Staging, LLC.”
Opened in August of 2021, the full-service home staging company provides services for both occupied and vacant residential homes. Lindsay offers no-cost, no-obligation site surveys to create custom quotes for each project and, for a small fee, a valuable DIY staging report for sellers living in occupied homes—a walk-and-talk consultation complete with a written report to include detailed suggestions for the owners to complete to make their home market-ready.
“We offer professional, high-quality customer service and attention to detail. We are passionate about home staging and helping market your property,” smiles Lindsay.
With his solid background in sales and public service, and a love of all things real estate, Mark established Booze Realty Services, where he is committed to working for his clients’ best interests. “Helping you achieve your real estate goals is my passion,” he affirms. Mark genuinely cares for his clients, and his background in high dollar/high pressure dealings gives him the skillset to see transactions through to completion, with full client satisfaction. Mark hangs his license at topproducing brokerage Coldwell Banker Schneidmiller Realty in Coeur d’Alene.
“We are extremely client-focused, and our heart is to help others and establish good relationships in the community,” affirms Mark. “Every transaction and every staging is unique, and we possess the depth of knowledge and experience to see our clients’ needs through to fruition and satisfaction.”
The couple expresses the importance of superior branding and marketing for those homes that are listed for sale; that when people list their property, it becomes their product, and like any product, they need to compete to gain attention—and ultimately attract the right buyer. “That’s where the services that Lindsay and I provide combine to really benefit my sellers,” notes Mark. “We professionally Stage my listings, vacant or occupied, at no cost to the seller.” Furthermore, Mark’s
listings are professionally photographed and then marketed dynamically through his brokerage, social media, online, open houses and more—top-notch branding that could cost sellers thousands of dollars but is included at no cost when a seller lists with Mark.
When it comes to what the pair finds most rewarding about the work they do, Lindsay says, “I love the transformation that takes place in such a short amount of time. It is such a satisfying experience to see a vacant home or overly personalized home go from difficult-to-imagine to inspiring new buyers!”
Mark adds, “I agree with Lindsay 100 percent! I love seeing properties be transformed before they go on the market and the ensuing feedback when they go live. At the end of the day, I gain an amazing sense of simultaneous pride and humility when my clients put their trust in me to help them navigate the often-times tricky waters of a real estate transaction.”
The couple enjoys spending time with their three children (15, 11 and 9), taking in the beauty God has provided, whether skiing and snowboarding in the winter or boating, hiking and fishing during the warmer months. They also find opportunities to volunteer in various capacities in the community, including at One Place Church and in youth baseball.
“God has blessed us with opportunities, and every step of the way He has developed in us traits and skills that make our products valuable,” the couple shares. “We are adamant about doing good unto others, and our goal is to provide an excellent product. On top of that, our very supportive family has helped us immeasurably along the way, and we truly have the best clients!”
FIRST-TIME HOME BUYER OR Seasoned Pro
REAL ESTATE EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON WHAT YOU SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A HOUSE
Freedom and prosperity have been foundational components of the American Dream for generations, and to many, owning a home is an important milestone in achieving that dream. The feeling of having a piece of land that is yours, four walls, and a roof to hold and protect your family is unparalleled. Reaching the goal of homeownership provides stability and connections to the community and builds financial wealth over time. It’s also one of the most significant investments you’ll make in your lifetime—both in your future and financially.
You want to choose a home that meets the needs of your current lifestyle, stage of life, and any future goals you have for yourself and your family. And the journey to and the process of buying a house is unique for each buyer. A growing family has different needs than an empty nester looking to downsize. A single parent desires vastly different features than a new retiree.
Whether you’re a first-time home buyer or a seasoned veteran, the process can be overwhelming. One of the best first steps is finding an experienced Realtor—they have the training and knowledge to walk you through the process, give you the ins and outs of the neighborhood, and get down to the nitty-gritty details to help you make an informed decision. For this reason, Gig Harbor managing broker and Realtor Jennifer Hawkins of Hawkins-Poe key2see Team, real estate broker Jackie Suarez of Century 21 RiverStone and Realtor Ben Geanetta of Elite Realty Partners, both based in North Idaho, provided professional insight to help clear up the sometimes muddy process of purchasing a house.
Most people considering buying a home have imagined their “perfect” house. For some, it’s a brick house with a white picket fence, while others crave a low-maintenance condo in the city—either way, it’s likely you have more non-negotiables than you initially realize. As potential buyers start viewing homes, they can quickly get distracted by the beautiful countertops and professionally staged presentation. Relying on an imagined picture in your head can lead to overlooking must-have features. There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a house only to remember later that you swore you’d never share a closet with your spouse again.
Make a list. Have each person involved in buying the home and who will be living in the home make a list of the features they most want and things they truly need. Then you can review the list—maybe drop the wall-towall trampoline room requested by your 7-year-old—and rank the features by importance. Doing this will help narrow down properties during your search and keep you focused as you visit potential properties.
“Location, location, location” is a common phrase in real estate. Besides being in an area where you want to live, the location is also directly linked to the current and future home value. The features that determine what constitutes a good location differ for each home buyer, but there are some generally accepted objective factors to consider. The location determines which schools your children will attend, how long your commute to work will be, and which community you will be involved with daily. “Do your homework and work with an agent who is an expert in your target area,” recommends Jackie.
Researching an area and working with a knowledgeable Realtor also helps when evaluating neighborhoods. Take a walk in the neighborhood and talk to people who live there. This will help you get a feel for the mood of a neighborhood but can also provide invaluable insight into real-time issues or benefits of the neighborhood.
KNOW YOUR BUDGET ANDTHEMARKET.
Another factor to consider are the future plans for the area. New construction neighborhoods are popping up all over—depending on your needs, you may want to hold out for one of the new builds, or you might not want to buy right next to a future construction site. You should also consider the crime in the area, if there are any benefits such as recreation facilities, and if there are HOA dues that will affect your monthly payment.
Remember, your location also includes the lot on which the home stands. You can remodel and renovate a house to your every specification, but the lot will remain the same. Consider the lot location and size carefully when viewing homes. Does it get enough sunlight? Will the driveway be difficult to navigate when it snows? Is the yard large enough for your kids and dog to run around? Are you prepared for the amount of maintenance needed for this size yard? If anything about the location or the lot seems concerning or feels like a compromise to you, don’t hesitate to walk away. It will be easier to find another property in a better location or lot than to live with frustrations that could’ve been avoided.
Know your budget and the market. While this sounds simple enough, it can be a complex process. You need a clear picture of your finances to determine a down payment amount and the maximum mortgage payment you can afford. Your real estate team can help review various mortgage payment scenarios and point out sleeper costs, including HOA dues, homeowner’s insurance, and property taxes. “Home buyers need to have all their documents in order
and hire a solid team to help them purchase a home. This team will consist of a local, full-time real estate professional, a full-time knowledgeable lender, and expert local vendors,” explains Ben.
The market, interest rates and inventory have been rapidly changing over the past few years, but real estate is cyclical. Depending on your circumstances, now might be a great time for you to buy, but not ideal for others. As Jennifer explains, “This market is healthy, but rates are high. … If you have substantial equity in your home, now is a great time to buy, and there are a lot of options available that you wouldn’t be able to capitalize on when the market is hot.”
YOU WANT TO CHOOSE A HOME THAT MEETS THE NEEDS OF YOUR CURRENT LIFESTYLE, STAGE OF LIFE, AND ANY FUTURE GOALS YOU HAVE FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY.
Easy Way to Sell, Smart Way to Buy
Most Unique Shopping Experience in America!
From a young age, Erik Rock knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur, and he finally got the chance at 28 when his family, who owned a store in Nevada, had the opportunity to open a second location in Idaho. “I burned the bridge, moved to Idaho with my new wife and started our family’s second store in 2012,” Erik recalls. They expanded to a third location in 2015 in the heart of Liberty Lake, Washington, which Erik now runs and operates.
What started out organically as a small furniture consignment store has grown into the largest furniture, jewelry and handbag consignment store in the country and offers one of the most incredible shopping experiences in America.
Consign Furniture & Jewelry—a family business, which Erik runs with his father Alan, mother Julia and brother Remington—sells everything furniture, jewelry and luxury handbags, from brand new
by JILLIAN CHANDLERto custom design to pre-loved in its massive 60,000-square-foot space. With successful locations also in Reno, Nevada, and Meridian, Idaho, Erik is excited to share that they will soon be breaking ground on their fourth store in Hayden, Idaho, off Highway 95.
“It’s been amazing watching this business grow. We sell the most iconic brands ever created and have countless different brand new and custom designed furniture lines we sell in house as well,” says Erik proudly. He also notes they are also the largest brick-and-mortar reseller of luxury handbags in the Northwest. “It’s very rare for a store to have so many dynamic business models working together under one roof with so many moving parts and pieces. You must have a cool shopping experience to thrive, and I believe we are the future of brick-and-mortar retail.”
The quality, diversity and selection you will find is unlike any other. Erik equates the shopping experience to a unique treasure hunt. “You never know what you are going to find, as our inventory changes daily, and our consignors are some of the savviest people in our community.”
With a clientele that is incredibly diverse, Erik sees everyone from billionaire clients to first-time home buyers. “There is truly something for everybody in a store like this, and oftentimes you can find amazing brands at up to 70 percent off retail,” Erik says. And he encourages clients to negotiate their own sale. “We love the haggle.”
From the customers to the consignors to the incredible store team, Erik firmly believes they all have played a vital role in maintaining the success the business continues to see.
“This business has led me to so many purposeful places and introduced me to some of the most incredible people out there in our community,” smiles Erik. “Teaching entrepreneurship and personal development has been the role that I have loved the most as we have grown our companies. Philanthropy and committing to the communities we serve has also been a top priority.”
Erik is on the board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and was part of the incredible team that brought a chapter to North Idaho. The Rock family also supports Special Needs Recreation, Boys and Girls Club, Kootenai Humane Society, Community Cancer Fund, Post Falls Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House, Daybreak Youth Services, Tim Tebow Foundation, Local Law Enforcement & Operation Underground Railroad.
“We would have never believed that we could turn our business into what it’s become today,” Erik reflects. “I now push the limits of what’s possible daily and love leading the next generation of doers within our company and beyond.”
Get Ready for Get Ready for
by DREW JOHNSONSummer is a time for fun, sun and relaxation, but for parents, it can also be a stressful time trying to keep kids entertained and engaged while school is out. Prepping for summer activities ahead of time can help alleviate some of that stress and ensure that your kids have a summer filled with fun and meaningful experiences.
One of the first steps in prepping for summer activities is to determine what your child is interested in and what they want to do during the summer months. Having a conversation with your child about their interests and ideas can help you choose the right activities or programs to keep them engaged throughout the summer.
Summer camps can be a great option for kids of all ages and interests. There are a variety of camps available, from traditional day and overnight camps to specialized camps focused on specific activities like sports, arts or technology. Many of these camps also offer specialized programs for children with special needs or those looking for a unique experience, like wilderness camps or adventure camps. If your child is interested in sports, there are a variety of summer programs available that can help them improve their skills and stay active. Many local sports leagues offer summer camps and clinics for kids of all ages and skill levels. There are also specialized sports camps that focus on specific sports like soccer, basketball or gymnastics.
Arts and cultural programs can also be a great way to keep kids engaged and learning during the summer months. Many museums, theaters and community centers offer summer classes and programs for children interested in music, dance, theater or visual arts. These programs can help children develop new skills and explore their creativity while having fun.
Once you have an idea of what your child is interested in, it’s important to start researching and registering for programs as early as possible. Many popular programs fill up quickly, so it’s important to start the registration process early to ensure your child gets a spot. Many programs also offer early bird discounts for families that register early, so it can be a great way to save money as well.
In addition to traditional summer programs, there are also a variety of other activities and experiences that you can plan for your child during the summer months. Family vacations, day trips to local attractions, and outdoor adventures can all be great ways to create lasting memories and keep kids engaged and excited throughout the summer.
To make the most of the summer, involve your child in the planning process. Create a summer bucket list together, and let your child choose activities that they would like to do. This can be anything from trying a new food to learning a new skill. Use the bucket list as a guide for planning summer activities and checking off items throughout the summer.
Before your child starts any summer program or activity, make sure they have everything they need to be prepared. This includes any necessary equipment, clothing and supplies, as well as any required medical or consent forms. Check the program requirements and ensure that your child has everything they need before the program begins.
If your child has any medical conditions or requires special accommodations, it’s important to discuss these with the program staff ahead of time to ensure that your child’s needs can be met. This may include providing medication
or equipment or working with the program staff to create a plan for accommodating your child’s needs.
Preparing for summer activities also includes ensuring that your child is emotionally ready for the experience. Starting a new program or activity can be exciting but also nerve-wracking for children. Talk to your child about their feelings and help them prepare for any challenges or new experiences they may face. Encourage them to try new things, but also let them know that it’s okay to feel nervous or uncertain.
In conclusion, prepping for summer activities for kids can be an enjoyable experience for both parents and children. By taking the time to research and plan ahead, parents can ensure that their children have a fun and meaningful summer filled with a variety of activities and experiences. Whether it’s traditional summer camps, specialized classes and programs, or family vacations and outdoor adventures, there are plenty of options available to keep kids engaged and excited during the summer months. By involving your child in the planning process, creating a summer bucket list, and ensuring they have everything they need for their specific program or activity, you can help set them up for a successful and enjoyable summer.

NIC Roadshow visits Sandpoint High School
by GERRY MCCRAY, NORTH IDAHO COLLEGEorth Idaho College hit the road and visited Sandpoint High School March 24 to offer students a chance to learn about the opportunities available at NIC.
The NIC Roadshow drew more than 400 students to the Sandpoint High School gym, where they were able to speak with NIC staff and faculty about different programs offered at the college including Theatre, Graphic Design, Culinary Arts, Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, Law Enforcement and more.
Each booth featured informational material about different programs, and some had hands-on activities to engage students including stitching wounds on a dummy arm, spinning prize wheels, VR auto body painting and more. Students were also able to register for NIC at the event, ask for general help about preparing for college and learn more about dual-credit opportunities.
“It’s never too early for students to start thinking about their futures,” Sandpoint High School Principal Jacki Crossingham said. “Giving them opportunities to explore their interests and explore different career paths is vital. When students get to experience real-world examples of how their skills can be applied to a career, it becomes even more relevant.”
NIC staff and faculty said students were engaged and informed about programs they were interested in and used the opportunity
to find out how the college can help with their goals.
“It was really amazing to see the different students connect with NIC instructors,” NIC Center for New Directions Student Success Navigator Louisa Rogers said. “Students were having in-depth conversations about their future plans and interests. What is especially great is that NIC has a campus in Sandpoint, and they wouldn’t necessarily have to go to Coeur d’Alene their freshman year.”
Rogers also said that it’s important to make connections with high school students before they graduate to help build confidence for their first collegiate semester.
“When you are an incoming freshman, and you already have a connection with an NIC instructor because you’ve been talking to the same instructor at roadshows throughout your high school experience—that can be hugely helpful when it comes to success in college,” Rogers said.
Rogers said she believed that some of those connections were made at the roadshow and that faculty came away with multiple lists of interested students.
NIC also held roadshows at St. Maries High School and Lake City High School on April 28.

PLAY! healthy tip
Fun with the kids leads to a healthier family
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the importance of playtime with our kids. As adults, we often get caught up in work, chores and other responsibilities, leaving little time for leisure activities. However, play is not just a fun way to pass the time; it also has numerous benefits for our health and wellbeing. Engaging in play with our children can lead to a healthier and happier family.
Firstly, playtime is a great way to relieve stress and anxiety. When we play with our kids, we are able to let go of our worries and focus on the present moment. This can help us feel more relaxed and rejuvenated, which can have a positive impact on our mental and physical health.
Moreover, playtime promotes physical activity, which is essential for good health. Many modern lifestyles involve long hours of sitting and little physical movement. Playing with our children can help us get moving and increase our heart rate, which can improve our cardiovascular health. Playtime also strengthens family bonds and improves communication skills. When we play with our kids, we are creating positive memories and building strong relationships.
Additionally, playing together can encourage us to communicate more effectively and resolve conflicts in a healthy manner.

Sushi at Home!
• Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Drain the rice and add it to a pot with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Cook for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water has been absorbed.
• While the rice is cooking, make the sushi vinegar by mixing together the rice vinegar, sugar
• Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl and add the sushi vinegar. Use a wooden spoon or rice paddle to gently fold the vinegar into the rice until it’s well combined. Let the rice cool to room temperature.
• Place a sheet of nori seaweed on a bamboo sushi mat or a piece of plastic wrap. Wet your hands with cold water and grab a handful of rice. Spread the rice evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top edge.
• Add a few strips of fish, cucumber and avocado to the center of the rice. Use the bamboo mat or plastic wrap to roll the sushi tightly, tucking in the filling as you go. Press the sushi roll gently to make sure it’s compact and the filling is snugly packed.
• Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients, making three more sushi rolls.
• Use a sharp knife to slice each sushi roll into eight pieces. Serve the sushi with soy sauce, pickled ginger and wasabi on the side.
• Enjoy your homemade sushi!
