The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Where has the year gone?
Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like 2022 came in with a bang and continued full speed ahead. And now, here we are, in the midst of the holiday season, when life slows down a bit yet there is so much to do to prepare for fami ly gatherings and the end of the year.
This has been a year of natural disasters, of war, of division, of inflation, yet here we are, still standing, many of us stronger than we were before. We continue to look to the future, working hard, loving and providing for our families, with the goal of doing our part to create a blessed life for our children—and a better world for generations to come.
We all have purpose, and we must live that purpose, despite what is going on around us. We must continue to seek good and do our part to spread that good throughout our neighborhoods, our schools, our communities, and our nation.
The holiday season is a time to give thanks, as we have so much to be thankful for: the roof over our heads, the food on the table, clothes to keep us warm, a vehicle to transport us to and from work. Opportunities abound this time of year to give back to those less fortunate as well. If you can’t afford to give monetarily to a local charity or organization, you can donate gently used clothing and jackets to women’s and children’s shelters; volunteer your time at a food pantry/bank; go through the kids’ toys and stuffed animals, clean them up, and find a way to get them to those children who are less fortunate.
Give and you shall receive. Blessings come to those who assist others—in whatever way that may be.
May we focus on what is important in life as the year comes to an end and welcome 2023 with faith, love and hope.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Decorating for the season
by RACHEL KELLY

The holiday season has our eyes turned inward toward home. More time spent at home around loved ones has us pulling out the throw blankets and piling on the pillows. This season’s decor has us creating spaces for more time spent doing indoor activities, making room for holiday gatherings and fostering a feeling of festivity. It’s important that your space reflects what’s most comfortable for you. It’s important that the place you wind down and spend the most time mirrors your individual feelings, memories and style. Decorating for the season means something different for everyone, however, there are common priorities that just might spur your holiday humbug into action.
During the holidays, especially during the winter solstice, it can get pretty dark. One of the themes of the holidays is to bring light into dark spaces. Lighting has a way of creating mood. The same is true in our homes during the holidays. Switching out light fixtures, adding
new lamp shades or hanging twinkle lights from dark corners makes for an instant cozy space. Plus, it’s festive! Bright lights are only necessary while reading, otherwise soft light (such as what comes from a fireplace) creates comfort. Since electricity is a fairly recent invention, it makes sense that our bodies would prepare for sleep and relax more in less invasive bright light. Candles are another inexpensive addition to any space during short winter days. Hanging tea light fixtures along stairwells and hallways makes the switching on and off of lights unnecessary, which is especially convenient if half the house has already gone to bed. In some cultures, it’s customary to place candles in window sills to share light with neighbors during the holiday season. This tradition doubles as a way to bring comfort in the home as well.
More time spent indoors means more activity, not less, happens in your home. Wintertime is a time for rest and rejuvenation. Our space can assist us in time well spent. It’s not the time for big renovations, but there

are simple strategies that everyone can use to open up and declutter our space for the holidays. If you have kids, this might be a good time to build each of them their own creative corners in an out-of-the-way favorite spot, complete with its own light source, pillows, and organization that works for their needs. Actually, this might be a good time for you to build your own creative space, filled with things that both bring you joy and allow you to do whatever makes you feel most constructive. Everyone needs a hub—a space that’s just yours. Otherwise, everyone’s indoor activities go everywhere, and there doesn’t seem to be a place for anything. Encouraging each person in the household to create their own space brings ownership. For common spaces, pay attention to how you and others naturally do things. If there’s a place where people seem to throw their towels, that’s where the laundry hamper goes. If a favorite family activity is movie night, then maybe buy some extra oversized pillows that tuck away in a basket at the side of the couch. This holiday season, bring ownership to your home by tailoring your space to fit your needs.
Usually when it comes to the holiday color scheme, don’t choose anything that doesn’t already work. Nobody needs a complete holiday revamp every year. If you’ve chosen pretty basic wall colors, and generally your regular aesthetic is quiet, solid colors, there is lots of room for color during the holidays. Colored lights to wrap up the stairwell, silver tinsel hung from the windowsill, red bows over the doorways. Your tree might just be a jumble of color, filled with

ornaments that carry with them memories that grow every year. However, if in your house you already have a lot of color, you might want to tone down the holiday decor with simple glass tree ornaments and white twinkle lights. Another simple decoration is hanging dried flowers from the tops of the windows, this freshens the air as well as looks festive. Live flowers that will last through the holidays, or even through the entire winter season, is always a welcome look set in direct contrast to the dreary outdoors. This season, choose a color scheme that brings life to your indoors.
As you pull out the traditional decorations this holiday season, don’t be afraid to get rid of whatever doesn’t bring you joy. Sometimes those old holiday decorations can really pile up and gather dust. There’s a reason that we tuck those decorations away most of the year. As you cultivate your space, think of what works for you. Create and open up your space for the things you like doing during the holidays, whether it’s holding holiday parties or crashing on the couch for a good holiday movie. Create a space for others, but also don’t be afraid to prioritize something for yourself that helps you to feel productive or cozy. It’s your home, and it reflects you and those you love.
This holiday season, decorate in such a way that reflects your fondest memories and encourages the activities that cultivate joy.

Six tips and tricks to prepare your home for winter
by JOSHUA NISHIMOTO
As the seasons change from hot summer to cool autumn and into fall, many people find themselves doing some annual chores to make sure that their home is prepared for winter, while many find themselves unprepared for the colder, and wetter, winter months.
To make sure that you are ready for the change of season, there are some very easy and cost-effective ways to prepare your home to endure the harshest of winters. Some of these items may end up costing a bit more than you would like to spend upfront but will save you a ton of money in the long run. When you’re preparing to host for the holidays, keep your family warm and comfortable, or just getting ready to embrace winter without spending a lot of money, some of these seemingly minor things can not only save you money but keep your house warm and protected from the harsh winter conditions, adding to the longevity of your home.
Here are six helpful tips to keep you and your loved ones comfortable in preparation for winter:
28 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL november/december 2022 28 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL november/december 2022
Check your chimney and fireplace.
Be sure to clean your fireplace. Dust ash and other particles can fill the surrounding areas that need to be cleaned before the winter season sets in. Inspect chimneys for damage. Cracks, loose bricks and broken mortar can occur due to ice dams in the room. Be sure to fix any aspects of your chimney that look broken or are starting to deteriorate and may prevent your chimney from working properly. Also, be sure to replace your chimney cap if it’s broken to keep leaves, rain/snow and debris out of your chimney.
Clean your gutters.
There are many ways to weatherize your home. In the multitude of items to check off, your gutters can sometimes go unnoticed. Before starting the cleanup process, spread a tarp underneath your gutters to collect all the debris, grime and dead leaves to protect your landscape. Next, scrub the gutters to remove all the gunk. Pull out wet leaves using a plumbing snake, and flush the gutter using a garden hose to clear out the remaining dirt. When finished, you may find it worthwhile to install a gutter guard to keep out leaves, sand grit and other debris.
29november/december 2022 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL
Check your furnace.
Dirt and debris can build up in your furnace and cause inefficiency, increased energy bills, and even pose a safety risk. Cracks in the furnace can cause deadly poisonous gas to make its way inside your home. In addition, a dirty furnace won’t be able to provide you with a warm, comfortable environment. The furnace filter trapped with lint, pollen and debris obstructs airflow and makes your furnace run longer to heat the house.
Be sure to inspect air leaks and insulate them. Also, be sure to clean your filters before the start of the season, and don’t forget to change them every three months. When in doubt, hire a professional for a thorough checkup before the start of the season. They will check all the major components and also test for carbon monoxide leakage.

There’s never a good time to be stuck in an uncomfortable and possibly deadly cold with a heating system that’s on the fritz. Make sure your systems are up to snuff by hiring a heating technician who will inspect your furnace or heat pump to make sure that it’s in good shape and manufacturer-rated efficiency for roughly $80 to $100. The inspection should also measure carbon monoxide. Making sure to hire a proper technician early on will make it less likely that you’ll need to hire one last minute for crucial repairs.
Your pipes are prone to freezing in frigid temperatures. This can cause damage, such as pipes bursting and water flooding your home. Not only will you have possible damage from flooding, but you will also lose free-flowing water from your taps, causing a terrible inconvenience.
To ensure that your pipes are functioning properly during the coldest times of the year, be sure to seal, insulate, use heat tape and keep your faucets slightly open to ensure that water is flowing at temperatures above freezing. Also, be sure to place a bucket under the faucet to prevent water waste.

Increase your heating options.
In winter, heavy snow and strong winds can cause power outages. To counter this, you should have a backup option of a heating system that uses natural gas, propane or wood.
Use gas or a wood fireplace when your traditional heating source is not functioning properly. Be sure to clean it before the weather turns and the outside temperature drops. Store a supply of firewood in a dry place off the ground. This will protect the wood from pests and moisture when stored in or outdoors. It can come in handy when the power is out. And last, but not least, use a generator to run electric heating devices during a power outage. Following these alternative heating sources just may save your life.

BAKERY
Local bakery delivers more to the community than its sweet treats
by TAYLOR SHILLAM
There’s something extra sweet about a bakery that is more than it seems. Created out of love, as a safe place to celebrate people of all abilities, The Village Bakery is a sweet place indeed.
Driven by the vision of a self-taught, highly creative pastry chef, The Village Bakery was created to make a difference in the lives of those with special needs and disabilities in the local community, “specifically, helping those with disabilities feel valued, accepted and recognized,” they shared.
Located in the Hayden Super 1 Shopping Center, The Village Bakery employs those with special needs and disabilities to create quality desserts, cakes, pastries and more, all while helping its employees develop important life skills.
The bakery’s owner and operator is accomplished chef Dana Bellefeuille, who cultivates a fun, creative environment. Dana spent more than 20 years developing her culinary skills and reputation, working in kitchens with chefs that “many of us know from the Food Network,” making her name across the region and notably making cakes for Seattle’s Space Needle restaurant.
Dana then chose to pursue her desire to combine two loves: a love for baking, and a love of supporting those with special needs and disabilities.
Her passion for supporting those with special needs is near to her heart and home. It began with her own children, her daughter with a physical disability and her son on the autism spectrum.
Dana shared that her motivation for creating a place like The Village Bakery was in wanting for others what she always wanted for her own children. Her vision was always to create a place for people of all abilities to feel accepted, valued and recognized for their own special skills. Since its earliest days, operating out of Dana’s own home kitchen, The Village Bakery has been just that: a safe place that accepts and celebrates all abilities, while providing space for learning and growth.

“My secret wish would be for everyone to see beyond stereotypes,” Dana shared. “Everyone has special talents. Everyone deserves a chance.”
When The Village Bakery began in her home kitchen, “it doubled as a loving space where people with challenges can make their dreams come true, and a venue for baking her amazing delicacies,” the bakery shared.
After a successful beginning, Dana’s next goal was to open a storefront in North Idaho. In early 2022, after ample fundraising and community support, she opened The Village Bakery in its current Hayden location. Now, the bakery operates with a variety of culinary goodies offered daily, from sweet and savory breakfasts like bagels, burritos, croissants and sweet rolls, to soups, salads and
sandwiches for lunch. In addition to the bakery’s rotating daily bakery items, they offer wholesale items, a selection of holiday goods, and specialty cakes and cupcakes.
At The Village Bakery, each employee has a chance to shine, sharing their unique qualities while developing new skills that reach far beyond baking. The “BakeA-Tiers,” as Dana has called them, often practice communication, teamwork, money management, and following directions, among other important life skills.
In addition to supporting her employees in their growth, Dana is committed to supporting the greater North Idaho community. “The Village Bakery has participated in many fundraisers and will continue to donate time and product,” bakery staff shared.

Made to be dropped and melted into hot water or milk for a delicious chocolate treat, Cocoa Bombs are hollow chocolate balls, sealed with hidden goodies inside, like marshmallows and cocoa powder.
The Village Bakery made over 3,000 bombs in a period of about six weeks in 2020, they shared—all out of Dana’s home. They donated proceeds totaling about $10,000 to the Panhandle Autism Society.
They will continue to support the local community, and Cocoa Bombs continue to be sold at their Hayden bakery.
Dana has been honored for her efforts, named one of the 2021 Women of the Year by the Spokesman-Review and Bank of America. She was also honored as a recipient of the Women of Distinction award in the Business and Professional Category for 2021 by Soroptimist International of Coeur d’Alene.
It’s only the beginning for The Village Bakery and Dana’s mission to impact local lives.
“I want to mentor and help my workers to fulfill dreams, become proficient and expand their horizons,” she shared.
“I tailor it to each person’s ability. Their can-do attitude is amazing. I love every minute of it.”
The Village Bakery is open Tuesday through Sunday in the Hayden Super 1 Shopping Center. Its hours, menu and special-order request forms can be found online at TheVillageBakeryCdA.com, and regularly posted images of their unique culinary creations can be found on their Facebook page.

Teacher in the Spotlight
Second Grade, Ramsey Magnet School of Science
Jby TAYLOR SHILLAM
acqueline (Jacquie) Mercer has been a teacher for 10 years. Her goal is “to create caring and empathetic students who develop a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.” This fall, she was recognized for the care she pours into her students when she was named September’s Teacher of the Month by the Coeur d’Alene School District.
“Mrs. Mercer was recognized for the endless amount of time, effort and love she puts into teaching at Ramsey,” shared Coeur d’Alene Schools. “She is the first to arrive and the last to leave. She gets to know her students thoroughly and what motivates each one.”
Now a second-grade teacher for Ramsey Magnet School of Science, Mercer has been teaching second grade for five years, after years of teaching special education and early education.
“I think the public would be surprised at how much time and energy teachers put into getting to know every student and how they learn,” Jacquie said, yet it’s clear how worthwhile it is to her to devote that energy. “It is so rewarding watching a student’s eyes light up with inquiry.”
Her bio for the school district reads, “I believe in teaching with compassion, dedication and enthusiasm.”
Jacquie’s commitment is to helping students
achieve academically, while nurturing their unconditional self-acceptance and emotional well-being. When asked to describe an experience that stands out most from her time as a teacher, she recalled, “I had a very shy and quiet student. One day in math, the students were discussing a problem and he said loudly, ‘I know how to fix it!’” The student went on to lead the entire project.
“I hope to ignite a spark that will inspire students to believe, grow, and seek the knowledge they need to figure out what moves them to make a difference in the world,” she wrote. “I believe that students need to feel comfortable working, exploring, taking risks, and learning. I want my students to think of our classroom as a second home.”
Her care and commitment are only confirmed by her award from the district.
“She has the biggest heart, and her students know she truly loves them,” the district shared. “She promotes growth in herself and her colleagues, and we are fortunate to have her as part of the District 271 family.”
If Jacquie could share one life lesson with her students, it would be, “Be true to yourself, and surround yourself with positive people.”
Ramsey second-graders can surely count Mrs. Mercer among those positive influences.

Ben and his brothers then wore the 42 jersey in their respective sports at Coeur d’Alene High School. “The youngest, my sister Katie, didn’t get to wear the number 42 just because of the sports she played, but she participated in volleyball, track and soccer, and she looks just

Now, Jaylene has made an impression in her
own right, and at 17, has learned a lot from her athletic career and academic endeavors.
“One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is switching the position I play in soccer so late in my career,” she said. “I switched to playing goalkeeper one year before high school, and it was difficult because the position is so different mentally and physically compared to the others.”
She’s learned to stay motivated through mental blocks and a serious knee injury her freshman year. “I have been playing soccer for 13 years, and I got to a point where I was bored and had mentally checked out, until I started playing goalkeeper,” she said. “Motivating myself to continue through all of the changes was the biggest challenge, but the most rewarding in the end.”
It’s clear that Jaylene doesn’t shy away from challenges. The competitive aspect is one of her favorite parts of athletics.
“I’ve always enjoyed the competition and the high level soccer can be played at,” she said. “The sport is available to a wide variety of people, even if they have never stepped on the field before.”
As she moves forward into her college career and beyond, she hopes to be a positive mentor and example for younger players.
Academically, Jaylene loves to express herself through creative writing, for which she won an award her sophomore year. “I love being able to freely write and express my emotions,” she said.
Jaylene is currently looking at being recruited to play soccer in college, with her sights set on the East Coast, and big plans for the future.
“I plan on studying exercise science and sports psychology, to then advance to graduate school and end with a doctorate degree in physical therapy,” she shared. “I’ve always planned to become a physical therapist, because I’ve personally been through the process of physical therapy and want to help others with it.”

Mackenzie Goings Senior
As an athlete, Mackenzie felt her biggest challenge was choosing between two sports she loved. “I used to play club volleyball and soccer. When high school came around, I had to choose which one to play at that level,” she said. “It was one of the hardest decisions of my life. I went with the sport that I felt I would have the most success with.” She decided to focus solely on soccer.
Through athletics, Mackenzie has learned how to make an impact within a team.
“Playing soccer, I’ve learned many lessons, but the most important lesson I’ve learned so far is how to adapt and change to what those around you need,” she said. “Every year, the team changes, so you get used to adapting and changing to help in whatever way possible.”
Mackenzie was a senior captain of the soccer team at Lake City. “She was chosen for this role as a result of her on- and off-field leadership abilities,” Ruchti explained. “Although she is quiet in her demeanor, her impact is powerful. Always willing to help her teammates. Always plays hard. She sets the tone for others by how hard she plays. Just like in the classroom, she never cuts corners, and sets the bar for the work that is needed.”
“Mackenzie Goings is a remarkable young lady. One of the best I have had the privilege to coach and know,” shared Lake City soccer coach Matt Ruchti.
At 17, Mackenzie is a senior at Lake City, a four-year varsity soccer player, and highly regarded as a great student.
“Throughout playing soccer (both club and high school) and volleyball, I have been able to keep a 4.0 GPA and was in the top 10 percent of juniors in Idaho,” she said.
“There are no days off for Mackenzie,” Ruchti said. “Her dedication to her sport and academics are displayed daily. She has qualified for State High School Soccer all four years. She has been a starter all four years.”
Her players and teammates look up to her for these qualities and more, and the admiration is mutual.
“The thing I enjoy most about soccer is being able to play with a team of girls who are amazing,” she said. “Scoring and winning games is always fun, but the connections I’ve made through the sport are some of the best in my life.”
Mackenzie has had many accomplishments, Ruchti said, but “her everyday approach to training and school work have been the most impressive.”
Next fall, Mackenzie will apply that approach at the University of Idaho, where she plans to pursue a career in engineering. “I have always been good with math and have been fascinated with how things work and are built.”

44 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL november/december 2022 LIVES OF OTHERS Supporting local nonprofits supports our neighbors LOCAL COMMUNITY MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN THE
It is amazing to see the impact that local community members and businesses can have on area nonprofits. It is especially heartfelt to see the way the community comes together during the holiday season. With so many local nonprofits, there is no shortage of ways to show your support to a variety of causes throughout Coeur d’Alene and North Idaho this holiday season. One nonprofit to put at the top of your list is Newby-ginnings.
October 15, 2022, marked the nine-year anniversary of Newbyginnings. Founded by Theresa Hart after the struggle and heartache from losing her son SPC Nicholas Newby—who lost his life 10 months into his 12-month deployment in Iraq when an IED was detonated near the Humvee he was in—she was called to a begin anew, with Newby-ginnings born to help her heal while helping others in the process.
What began in her garage would grow into a new space of 1,700 square feet in Hayden, then 2,900 square feet in Dalton Gardens. After continuing to grow and expand to meet the needs of the community, they now reside in a 10,000-square-foot facility in Post Falls, which, as Theresa says, “we could easily double—the blueprints are already in my head. In the nine years we’ve been in operation, we’ve expanded five times!”
Newby-ginnings is a hub for veterans. Accepting donations— anything from clothing and shoes to houseware, appliances and furniture—they’ve made it their mission to support area veterans, active military and Gold Star Families who are in need of a little help. And the most incredible part is that everything is free! “All that is required is a government issued form of ID, filling out a brief enrollment form, then they are added into the system and can come in and start shopping,” smiles Theresa.
Newby-ginnings provides services not just to veterans, active service members and Gold Star Families in North Idaho but the entire Inland Northwest. “If they can get to us, we can help them,” affirms Theresa.
They currently have well over 5,000 veteran families enrolled in their program, and it continues to grow, enrolling five to 10 new families every day. On average, they see 130 to 160 people a day shopping for their clothing and household needs. “Some days it feels like they all come in at the same time,” Theresa laughs.
Newby-ginnings does not receive any government funding and is 100 percent dependent on donations and fundraisers. “Every day that we get to open our doors is a gift from this community,” affirms Theresa.

helping others in the process.
Since September, Theresa and her team have been gearing up for their “Adopt a Family” program. The program has continued to bless dozens of families each Christmas, with 2022 marking its ninth year. “We were brand new, had no money, but we had families that needed assistance, families with kiddos who needed help with Christmas. So, we reached out for the community’s support, and they answered our call,” recalls Theresa. “Each year, we match sponsors from the community with our families that need a little bit of help at Christmas.” Last year they helped brighten the lives of approximately 75 families and their children.
How it works is simple. Families fill out a form with their name, address, phone, email, and children’s names, ages (18 or younger) and gender, and some of their favorite things. Families are then matched with a sponsor. From there, the sponsor connects with the family directly, goes Christmas shopping for the family, and makes arrangements to drop off presents (as well as items needed for a beautiful holiday meal or gift card to purchase food themselves) at the family’s residence prior to Christmas.
There’s also Santa’s Workshop, which kicks off right after Thanksgiving, with Newby-ginnings converting and decorating their boardroom into a holiday oasis where they put out brand new toys, unwrapped, as well as items for Mom and Dad. “We allow our enrolled children to come in and shop,” Theresa shares. “It gives our littles the chance to shop for their brothers, sisters and parents.” Gift and toy donations can be dropped off on-site and will be accepted through December 15.
You can help support those who served and sacrificed for our county, and their families, throughout the year. Monetary donations can be made online at Newbyginnings.org. If you would like to bless and sponsor a military family this Christmas season, or are interested in donating your time, call 208.610.6996. For those looking to drop off items for donation, Newby-ginnings (located at 570 South Clearwater Loop, Unit A, in Post Falls) is open 9am to 5pm Monday through Thursday. Appointments can also be made outside of those hours.
The season of giving us upon us, and your generosity means more than you could even know.

FESTIVAL OF TREES IS BACK … IN PERSON
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
Held at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Friday, November 25, and Saturday, November 26, the annual Festival of Trees features three exciting events throughout its two days.
This year, the event kicks off with Friday d’Lights, sponsored by Numerica and Kootenai Health Volunteers, 5 to 8pm on Friday. Open to the public, Friday d’Lights invites the community to take in approximately 20 beautiful trees, donated and decorated, along with a display, by local businesses and individuals, each with its own unique theme. Some of this year’s themes include Rocket Ship, Girls’ Trip, and Nordic. Each tree is estimated at a minimum $2,000 value.
Santa will be on-site for the kids, and Evan Denlinger will be performing Christmas music live. There is no fee to view the trees, though donations are encouraged—which can be made at the event or online through the Heart Center Campaign.
Saturday, from 9am to noon, features the Healthcare Heroes event to thank Kootenai Health employees and recognize them for their hard and unwavering work. With more than 3,200 KH employees, organizers will accommodate as many as want to sign up to attend. “We did this last year for the first time, for Kootenai Health employees and their immediate families,” shares Kali Singleton, Development & Event supervisor for Kootenai Health Foundation. “This is a free event for them to enjoy the trees while listening to Christmas music and sipping on hot cocoa from the gourmet hot chocolate bar.” And, of course, Santa will be there too.
Saturday evening, from 5 to 9pm, Kootenai Health hosts the Festival of Trees Gala, a black-tie affair not to miss! With seating for approximately 400 guests, those who purchase a gala ticket ($225 per person) will enjoy

cocktails, tree sales and silent auction 5 to 6:30pm, welcome and dinner at 6:30, live auction beginning at 7:30, followed by music and dancing at 8:30, with the evening concluding around midnight. There will be the Champagne Quest, in which guests have the opportunity to purchase a glass of champagne and be entered to win a trip to Belize, sponsored by Mountain Power Construction (just 100 glasses will be sold), and don’t forget to purchase a Raffle Tree ticket for just $5 to be entered to win one of the fabulous trees on display.
“I feel like the Festival of Trees really kicks off the holiday season for so many people,” shares Kali. “A lot of people look to us to care for themselves and their loved ones, and this is a special way to support our local nonprofit hospital. It’s such a wonderful event, and we’re so lucky to be coming back in person.”
Last year’s virtual Festival of Trees raised more than $392,000 for neurosurgery technology. Proceeds from this year’s charitable event will support Kootenai Health’s Heart Center expansion. This $40 million project has been in the works for a decade and should be completed by next fall. “We are trying to meet the needs of the community and provide top-notch care,” says Kali.
Those wanting to make an entire night of the Festival of Trees Gala can book a hotel room at The Coeur d’Alene Resort and receive discounted Festival of Trees room rates. And those in search of just the right look for the gala receive discounted formal wear rentals and purchases at Say Yes and Touchdown Tuxedo.
Visit KootenaiHealthFoundation.org/attend-an-event to find additional details about this year’s Festival of Trees, to purchase your gala ticket or make a donation.

There’s a time for everything, even during the holidays. There’s a time for family, and there’s time for celebration. There’s time to decorate, time to get out the door, and a time for those holiday traditions. There’s even time for some of that spiced eggnog that is only available seasonally. But whether you will truly have time or not comes down to whether you are able to keep a healthy balance this holiday season. But with the holidays comes the pull of activities that are sure to yank you right off track to enjoying the season. There can be so many expectations during the holidays; expectations from others but also expectations that we put on ourselves. It can take a lot of effort to keep one’s priorities straight. This year, prioritize yourself, your family, your work and the holidays in a way that makes the most sense for the things that matter most.
Prioritizing yourself is often the hardest to accomplish during the holiday season. However, for many of us, “me time” should be the first thing we do. Not because you should be selfish, as if that’s even possible. Self-care doesn’t mean that we have to sacrifice making sure others are cared for. It’s just a fact that if you don’t fill your cup, you won’t have anything to give. Everything suffers when we don’t prioritize selfcare, especially in situations where you may be maxed out. Sometimes prioritizing yourself might mean waking up 15 minutes early every day to enjoy some extra silence over your favorite hot morning beverage. Sometimes it might mean organizing your day in such a way that you can have an extra 10 minutes at the end of every day to just be still. Sometimes it might mean going on a short walk or making a point to take a few hours once a week doing something you love. Little by little, consistent selfcare chips away at the stress that has a tendency to build up. Prioritizing yourself might mean that someone else around you might need to adjust their routine, such as going to bed earlier or making sure they’re around during the time that you’ve hedged out for yourself. Sometimes they might be upset about this (kids, this is you), but it’s important that everyone in every household shares the load of responsibility, so that each individual is cared for—including you. This might take some conversation, and it might take some compromise, but it’s worth it.

Prioritizing your family is probably next on most people’s list. Or maybe prioritizing those that you consider to be like family. There are just some activities and some plans that can’t be rescheduled this time of year, and missing them would take away from joy. It can be easy to under-appreciate those people closest to us, because we feel secure that they will always be there. Regardless, every relationship needs attention. Doing things this holiday season with those loved ones should be top on the list, as they are sure to bring the most joy this time of year. Usually, however, there is more than one loved one. Many people find themselves split between many different familial expectations from both sides. These activities can sometimes clash, so communication is key here. It’s no fun if you spread yourself too thin. Be sure to communicate what you can and can’t do for your own sanity, and let the rest be what it will be.
Prioritizing work where it should be during the holidays often means that not everything is done to perfection. However, it will be done the best you possibly can do, and that will have to be enough. Making money is all well and good, but it means very little if you have no time to use it. Especially during the time of year where money and time can be used so well. Do what needs to be done, hit your deadlines and demolish that project while you’re working. But when you’re off, you’re off. If you truly can’t get away, turn everything off. Give yourself a staycation, at home, and unplug from whatever pulls you where you don’t need to be. This might mean that you might have to cut back in some ways, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the fruits of your labor. There is a reason that work is not prioritized at the top of the list; it’s just not the most important thing.

The holidays are a time where we remember and focus on what is most important. The weather turns, the holidays begin, and we invest in all the people, activities and things that get us through the darker/colder parts of the year. There’s a reason that the holidays are all stacked on top of each other. This time of year, we all feel the need for a pick-me-up. The holidays are supposed to be a time of rest, encouragement and celebration. That is, if we can keep a healthy balance throughout. Keeping our priorities straight will help us to drop whatever doesn’t fit, so that we’re capable of making decisions between all the different things that pull at us this season. Being still and simply being thankful is a much-underrated skill.
This year, let’s harbor thankfulness by giving ourselves the time and the space to appreciate what makes the holidays so special.

SANDPOINT CAMPUS
by MEGAN SNODGRASS, NORTH IDAHO COLLEGE
NIC at Sandpoint welcomed the public to their new space in a Day of Welcome event September 14 at 515 North Pine Street in Sandpoint. The outreach center consolidated into a single building in August after several years of offices, classrooms and resources housed between two locations in Sandpoint.
NIC President Nick Swayne visited NIC at Sandpoint for the first time after becoming president in August. He said consolidating campus—and bringing students and employees together—under one roof makes sense not only for efficiency’s sake, but also for the sake of community.
“We have classes, computer labs, a testing center—all these facilities right here in this one building,” Swayne said. “For students, it’s being able to come here and sit at a table and get to know each other and say, ‘Oh you’re a student here too.’ It’s the same opportunities and experiences for kids coming out of high school, or even kids still in high school in dual credit, all the way up to gray-haired guys like me who want to come back and get an education—they can all come right here to the same place to learn and interact. All those opportunities make it a great resource for the community.”
NIC student Emma Hewitt attends NIC at Sandpoint classes and commutes to Post Falls for EMT training at NIC’s Workforce Training Center. She said taking some classes in her hometown and saving on commute time and expense has been impactful as she works toward her goal of earning her paramedic’s license.
“It’s so hard to find what works best for you, especially when you’re right out of high school and figuring it out, but I have family here, so being able to take classes here and still be close to my family and friends is really important and helps me a lot,” Hewitt said. “I have resources right here.”
NIC at Sandpoint includes two upgraded lecture classrooms with Zoom technology and a classroom for adult education and GED preparation. The campus also houses advising and faculty offices, as well as science, health professions and computer labs.
Services offered include application assistance, advising and registration help, financial aid and scholarship information, resource referral, tutoring and test proctoring.
For more information, contact NIC at Sandpoint Regional Outreach Center Manager Christine Callison at 208.665.5072 or Christine.Callison@nic.edu.

AND BACK
by MARC STEWART, HERITAGE HEALTH
Josh is a different person today than he was five or six years ago.
He talks about his time living on the streets, looking to score drugs and get high like it was just yesterday. The North Idaho man was homeless and hopelessly addicted to drugs and alcohol.
“I grew up in a family of drugs and alcohol,” Josh says. “It’s all I knew. I thank God every day for getting a second chance. I had overdosed a couple of times. I thought I would die and that I would never get out of my addiction.”
The road to sobriety wasn’t easy. Bouncing in and out of jail for years, Josh finally hit rock bottom after he was arrested for assaulting a man.
“I beat up a guy really bad,” says Josh, tears welling up in his eyes. “The guy said something about my family, and I just snapped. I feel horrible about what I did. Fortunately, the judge gave me another chance at life.”
Josh grabbed that last chance and turned his life around with the help of Heritage Health and his faith in God.
“We went to court to support him,” said Two Feathers, Homeless Outreach worker with Heritage Health. “Josh had been living on the streets and involved in a lot of illicit activity. One day, he decided he didn’t want to live that way anymore. It sounds simple, but it was not simple. He worked very hard to change his life.”
Elaine Dodson, an addiction counselor and case manager for Heritage Health’s Restored Paths, said Josh was dealing with mental health issues and addiction issues when he entered the program.
“Josh was really struggling,” she says. “Those mental health issues had to be stabilized. You have to treat the entire person for recovery to be effective.”
The Street Medicine Mobile Clinic allowed Kala Hall, a homeless outreach worker with Heritage Health’s Street Medicine program, and Two Feathers to see Josh regularly and meet his needs. Josh has been clean and sober for over 13 months.
“Josh received wrap-around care from the Restored Paths counselors, physicians and our Street Medicine team,” states Kala. “Everyone played a part in Josh’s recovery. We instilled empowerment, and he was able to take control of his life and make long-lasting changes.
Added Two Feathers, “We never gave up on Josh. It was hard, but Josh wanted it.”’
Indeed, Elaine said Josh’s positive attitude fueled his motivation to change. “Josh knew he couldn’t do it alone,” she says. “He’s learned so much, and it’s exciting to see his transformation.”’
Today, Josh has his own apartment, a car and a manufacturing job.
“I have great friends in Kala and Two Feathers,” he says. “They have helped me so much.”

Simple swaps for the festive foods you love
by TAYLOR SHILLAM
Which part of the holiday season do you most look forward to? Among the cozy gatherings, family traditions, and festive events galore, it’s likely that holiday food falls somewhere on the list.
When there are festive sweets, seasonal sips and decorated goodies everywhere you turn throughout the season, holiday dishes are hard to resist—and can be even harder on your health goals when they’re loaded with processed ingredients, extra sugars and artificial ingredients.
The good news is, you don’t have to choose between your health and your holiday favorites. A few simple swaps can make all the difference in transforming your favorite festive dishes into healthier indulgences. Maintain a happy holiday (and a happier gut, better mood and more stable energy level) while keeping your health goals on track with these simple, healthy replacements:

Healthy Mashed Potato Hack
From Thanksgiving to Christmas dinner and everywhere in between, mashed potatoes are a holiday season staple! If you love them, there’s no reason they can’t maintain their place at the Thanksgiving dinner table—however, you can easily pack a healthier punch in your holiday mashed potatoes with a simple swap: cauliflower.
Cauliflower is notoriously substituted for many carb-rich foods, but for good reason: its versatile texture and neutral flavor that easily mixes with others. Replacing some of the starchy potato with mashed cauliflower is a change that you’ll hardly notice in taste, but the benefits are plenty. Cauliflower is a fiber-rich vegetable that is loaded with folate and vitamin C, adding an extra immune-boosting punch while significantly lightening this hearty dish. Use about a 1:1 ratio for a guilt-free swap you’ll hardly notice!
Sweet Swaps
’Tis the season of sweet treats and baked goods galore, but an overload on sugar is unlikely to keep you feeling your best. Fortunately, there are now more options than ever for enhancing the health of your holiday sweet treats, from sugar substitutes that help eliminate blood sugar spikes (look for brands like Swerve or use pure maple syrup or honey) to flour substitutes with substance (try nutrient-dense almond flour or coconut flour). Substitutes won’t ruin the flavor or texture of your recipes—you’ll often be pleasantly surprised!
Using coconut oil in place of vegetable oil can boost the nutrition of your recipe with healthier fats, without losing any of the moist texture a holiday baked good needs.
Want to lighten your recipe overall? Pumpkin puree and/or fruit purees like applesauce can be substituted for a portion of the oil used. You won’t miss out on texture, and the recipe will naturally need less sugar thanks to the puree’s natural sweetness!

Lighten Up Your Apps
Holiday gatherings are often the prime location for appetizers, hors d’oeuvres, dips and sauces that are often more indulgent than the evening’s main course!
This includes the holiday dinner staple: gravy. Gravy is easy to modify by making your own with simple, fresh ingredients. Instead of processed varieties from the store, you can make your own flavorful edition by using a nutrient-rich, lowersodium broth along with herbs, a pinch of corn starch, and a bit of low-fat or dairy-free milk for an effective, yet lighter, thickener. Or, use the drippings from the meat you’ve prepared as a naturally flavorful base.
But what about those appetizers? Choose alternatives like a yogurt-based dip (think protein-packed Greek yogurt) or hummus at the center of your appetizer. Compared to cream cheese-based dips and those topping-coated cheese balls, these options allow for more fiber-filled snacking at a much lower calorie count, so you’re likely to get more nutrition from your dish. Even better, there are endless flavor options here for both sweet and savory!
Naturally Sweet Potatoes
Is sweet potato casserole a staple at your holiday table?
While traditional sweet potato casseroles are loaded with sugar-laden ingredients like brown sugars, marshmallow topping and candied nut coatings, simple swaps can reduce this dish’s added sugar and embrace the flavors of its natural ingredients.
Sweet potatoes are highly versatile and have so much natural flavor ready to use. Roasting them allows their inherent sweetness to shine, and adding warming spices like cinnamon and natural sweetness with pure maple syrup will produce a dish just as comforting and flavorful—with less added sugar and just as much of the health benefits sweet potatoes have to offer, like fiber, potassium and beta-carotene.

Practice Portion Control
For those indulgences you just don’t want to compromise (Grandma’s cookie recipe, your favorite holiday truffle, or whatever it may be), the simple practice of portion control can make all the difference.
Filling up on protein and fiber-rich foods first can help control the urge to overdo it on indulgences. If you’re making the treat or dish yourself, take control by making smaller servings. For example, use a mini muffin tin for easy control, or reduce the recipe by a quarter or half so you can enjoy and share it in small amounts.
HEALTHY TIP
Are You Experiencing the ‘Winter Blues’?
Ways to improve your well-being during the cold season
A s those colder, shorter, darker days are here, and will be for a while, it is important to not let those winter blues get you down. As we spend approximately six months of the year without adequate exposure to sunlight, this can lead to chronic deficiencies in an essential nutrient—vitamin D3. Lack of natural sunlight also leads to an imbalance in the hormones cortisol and melatonin.
Here’s how you can better prepare your body and mind for the winter to help with seasonal depression: Be sure to take a vitamin D3 supplement. Get outside early to expose yourself to natural light (even when it’s cold outside). Avoid blue light two hours before bed to help ensure you get adequate sleep in order to wake up refreshed. Prioritize daily exercise. Eat anti-inflammatory foods. Open the shades to let the light in. Brighten up your home with color (think indoor plants and inspiring artwork).
Don’t neglect your mental and physical health this season. Make yourself a priority, and you’ll see the difference it can make.

Reimagining your wardrobe for winter 76 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL november/december 2022
Temperatures may be dropping as the days of winter unfold, but the urge to bundle up doesn’t have to mean cooling down your sense of style.
This winter, reimagine your wardrobe with cozier, multi-functional versions of the fall pieces you already love. Playing with color, texture and volume can enhance your winter look, enhance your silhouette and maintain your sense of style—without sacrificing your temperature or
If it feels nearly impossible to maintain your fashion sense throughout the coldest months of the year, these few simple tips and trends can help you find the right balance of staying warm and looking your best, all season long. Lean into long layers, chunky accessories and statement-making pieces for the ultimate winter wardrobe refresh!
Turn Up the Texture with Knits. While winter has always been the prime time for knitwear to shine, this year’s fashion trends see knits in even more varieties, and paired with everything. From the traditional everyday cardigans to the trendier two-piece sets, knit vests and lengthy sweater dresses, knits will be found everywhere all winter long and are more stylish and bold than ever before.
When styling yours, play with fun accessories and creative layering (think multiple knit pieces within a single outfit, or pairing contrasting fabrics like wool and tulle) to take your knits from everyday winter wear to standout winter fashion statement.
Sweater (Dress) Weather. Cold temperatures don’t require laying your dress obsession to rest until the spring. This winter’s dress trends are full of cozy, long-sleeved styles, including lengthy, blanket-like sweater dresses, soft day-to-night velvets and turtlenecks for extra-chic coverage.
Make winter dressing easier with a statement-making piece that offers coverage and plenty of mix and matching with other winter favorites (pair with tights, style

with chunky boots, and layer under your best lengthy winter coat).
The maxi-length dress isn’t reserved for warmer seasons, either—it’s here to stay, with plenty of this season’s sweater dresses embracing the full-length style that offers plenty of protection against the cold. From floor-sweeping gowns for special holiday occasions, to the maxi sweater dresses that rival actual blankets with their plush fabrics and lengthy coverage, cozy and dramatic length provides even more reason to embrace the winter dress!
Step Up in Platform Boots. shoe trends are here to stay for the winter. The good news? This year’s shoes are not only taller but thicker as well— think chunky platform, ‘90s-inspired Mary Janes, easyto-walk-in wedges, and solid, statement-making, yet highly wearable, boots of all kinds.
This holiday season, leave the narrow heels at home and embrace all the chunky
wedges and loafers that are easy to wear for the long haul and highly holiday-occasion friendly. That’s right, your fall loafers don’t have to be put away for the season—they can be paired with long jeans, chunky knits and plenty of layers for continued wear into the cold season.
Chunky, platform boots are the name of the shoe game in 2022, and winter is no exception. This year’s tall, thick boots will do more than elevate your winter style—they’ll offer essential protection as you make your way through the elements of winter weather.
This winter is the perfect time to find those ideal boots that can do both—that is, both amplify your look while keeping your feet dry and warm through the season’s wet, snowy days.
Finding this balance is possible with this year’s influx of sleek boots that maintain a stylish appearance but are made from materials that make them discreetly weatherproof.
Playing with color, texture and volume can enhance your winter look.
Brands like Jeffrey Campbell, Sorel, Dr. Marten, Timberland, and Amazon Fashion have more options than ever before for winter footwear that is as functional as it is stylish.
Keep Your Fall Shackets. Shackets are a key fall-to-winter transitional piece—the perfect blend of shirt and jacket is warm, wearable and easily layered. As an easy way to enhance the appeal and the “put-together” quality of any outfit, shackets are typically oversized enough to wear over base-layer knits and cozy tops, even this year’s trending chunky knits and turtlenecks. Keep wearing your fall shackets all season long as a stylish, ultra-comfortable layering piece.
While pieces in muted neutrals and dark tones typically take over in the winter months, this year’s cold season is embracing deeper, brighter colors. It’s time to lean into deep, rich colors like bright greens and magentas, whether it’s a subtle color pop from a statement-making piece or accessory or a bold, monochrome set (think bright tailored suits and highlighter-bright cocktail dresses), this season’s fashion color palettes make it easier than ever to battle the drab winter blues.
Embrace Statement Shoulders and Silhouettes. This winter’s trends are in full support of maintaining a sleek silhouette, between tailored blazers and ultra-fitted waistlines. Keep your oversized blazers from autumn’s trends and layer them over your knits, long skirts and dresses to maintain a fitted, strong-shouldered silhouette. As an added bonus, wider shoulders tend to visually slim and accentuate the waist.
Another waist-friendly trend this winter? The popular corset fit, seen across this year’s runways, built into the silhouettes of everything from unique fitted tops to flattering pant suits and dresses. Keep this trend in mind when planning for holiday parties and outings—the corset style tends to be universally flattering and can easily accentuate your look for a special occasion!

For an appetizer, try the Gol Gappay Shots. This darling dish is presented in a miniature cart like the ones you would see on the streets of India. A crispy, round, hollow shell known as a puri is stuffed with potatoes, chickpeas and chutneys. You take it and add the tangy-flavored water it is served with and pop the whole thing into your mouth. So fun. Order the Paneer Kulcha, only available on weekends. Kulcha is a special seasoned Indian flatbread that is stuffed (choose from a variety of meats or veggies) and crispy. The dish is served with chickpeas and raita, a classic Indian yogurt sauce.

Idaho Turkey Trot
for
by Jilli an Chandler
If you’re looking for a great way to kick off Thanksgiving while giving back, then sign up today to take part in the North Idaho Turkey Trot, beginning and ending at Riverstone Park, on Thursday, November 24.
Each year, this annual Turkey Trot continues to grow, with close to 500 participants, young and old, making it a part of their Thanksgiving morning year after year. The event is family friendly (including the pups!), with the option to walk, run, jog or stroll the course.
Registration to participate, which ends November 23, is $10 for the 1-mile, $25 for the 5k and $27 for the 10k. There is also a minimal signup fee. Visit RunSignup.com/Race/ID/CoeurdAlene/ TurkeyTrotCdA for additional details and to register today.
A&H HIGHLIGHT
“In many cases, it is a family tradition,” shares Cynthia. “The 1-mile, 5k and 10k event is a fun run bringing family, friends and the community together to kick off Thanksgiving in a healthy, positive and fun way.”
2022 marks the 10th year of the North Idaho Turkey Trot. Organized by Your Friend Pamela Faye, a locally based nonprofit filling unmet needs in the community, the event kicks off at 9am Thanksgiving morning and continues until noon, along its Centennial Trail course.
“This is for fun!” smiles Cynthia Rozyla, president of Your Friend Pamela Faye and race director. “No timing or awards will be given, but shirts (sponsored by Idaho Central Credit Union and Dog N It Hotel and Daycare) are available for an additional charge, and hot cider and cookies are a huge hit at the finish line.”
The North Idaho Turkey Trot gratefully accepts donations and sponsorships. For sponsorship levels and benefits, vendor opportunities or questions, call 208.661.9713 or email yourfriendpamelafaye@gmail.com.
All proceeds from the event benefit the community directly, each year donating funds for local needs. They have provided food to the food banks; blankets, hygiene items and backpacks to the homeless; and assistance to cancer patients in the form of gas cards, hotel stays and prescription co-pays. For 2022, proceeds from the Turkey Trot will be donated to Kootenai Environmental Alliance.

Annual Downtown Lighting Ceremony
NOV
Each year, on the day after Thanksgiving, the community has the opportunity to gather amongst friends and neighbors to share in this annual tradition. The festivities kick off at 5pm on Friday, November 25, with a parade down Sherman Avenue. Once the festive floats have concluded their journey and cleared the way, a fireworks display will light up the night sky over Lake Coeur d’Alene beginning at 6:15pm. Once the last of the colorful bursts have faded out, the dark streets turn bright with a flick of the switch to the delight of those both young and old, as 1.5 million lights light up the town. Additional details can be found at CdAResort.com and CdADowntown.com.
