NOTE

Publisher’s

My Head is Not as Hard as You Think... A LOT OF YOU WHO KNOW ME and work with me hopefully enjoy me, but I am sure you will all attest that I can sometimes be stubborn or “hard headed!” Yes, it’s true there are certain things that I will not compromise on when it comes to this magazine. The reason is because this is not really a magazine; it’s much more. It is a piece of the community, a part of us and it needs to represent “all” of us. It lives and breaths and with our commitment to online promotion and social media as well, we need to be mindful of this.

Where children can explore, create & learn!

This leads me to another topic that is related in a way. Last August I was knocked out by a football, and as a result I suffered a concussion. I have never had a concussion before, at least not like this one. It was awful. I had extensive memory loss, headaches, loss of appetite, mood swings and many other side effects and although most of these have subsided, some still linger. About 3 months ago I was working in Gig Harbor and was introduced to Lee Burki, a postconcussion specialist. As we talked I started to understand what exactly happened to me and where I was in the recovery process. It was fascinating to hear this because previous to meeting him I was convinced I would just have to live with the end result of this trauma. But as Lee explained, that is not true. There is a way to heal! I plan on doing just that. But this really got me thinking about how cool this publication really is. The amazing people I personally have been able to meet as a result of working on bringing the community this publication have truly changed my life. The professional advice, knowledge and outright good ol’ fashion customer service has been nothing short of awesome. Like Lee Burki and Sound Brain, Gig Harbor Living is packed full of professionals that live right here in our community. I encourage you to take advantage just like I have. Enjoy this issue! It’s a great mix of new and old stories and packed with exciting events. We create community! We connect people! We build trust!

Every nautical town has it’s icon. Some icons exist quietly in the hearts and minds of locals while others are commemorated in bronze. Gig Harbor will soon be home to it’s very own bronze sculpture commemorating the fishing families who made “the harbor of the gig” what it is today. The Big Catch, donated enthusiastically by Gig Harbor’s citizens, will soon stand as our own hometown icon. The Fish Bowl

The feverish football frenzy you won’t want to miss. By Mike Trittin. NO, THIS ISN’T ABOUT A BOWL OF CLAM CHOWDER, although it’s yummy. In fact, though it’s called the Fish Bowl it’s not even about seafood. We aren’t talking the many aquatic species that call Gig Harbor home; we are talking football and we are talking football in a big way.

makes Gig Harbor such a great place to live. We are blessed with two awesome schools and teams, and they always prove to give us a great game to watch.

It’s no secret that Washingtonians love football and have a reason to be proud of their teams. Events like the Apple Cup turn most bustling cities into ghost towns as folks, decked out in red or purple, are glued to their television sets with anticipation. It’s a game that creates a frenzy that sometimes divides households for a day. Once this fever is coupled with the fact that our beloved Seahawks are the new Superbowl champs, this football fever that has been spreading through Washington State is unrivaled.

Plus, there’s something awesome about crosstown rivalries. These friendly competitions bring an entire community together to celebrate team spirit. Parents root for their student athletes and students cheer for their friends on the field. Plus, it’s one more excuse to bring out the barbeque and grill up some brats, hot dogs, and burgers.

But, for those of us from Gig Harbor, we also know another football team of Seahawks; a team whose rival is not the 49ers. Our local Gig Harbor Seahawks’ rival is the Tides. In fact, their annual match is one of the largest community events of the year, aptly named the Gig Harbor Fish Bowl. The Peninsula School District is one of the top school districts in the country and it includes our two awesome high schools. The famous cross-town rivalry between the Peninsula Seahawks and the Gig Harbor Tides was born when Gig Harbor High school became our second high school. The Fish Bowl is one of the special treats in our town. It showcases what

12   Gig Harbor Living Local | www.GoGigHarbor.com

But, most importantly, the entire community comes together for one night. Sure, half of the crowd is either wearing green or painting their faces with green and gold while the other half is wearing blue or covered in blue. Nonetheless, at the heart of it all, our community is cheering for their other

members of the community. Yes, it can be a fierce rivalry, but not too intense since the next day everyone is friends again.

You won’t want to miss one of the best community events Gig Harbor has to offer! Ticket prices for this exciting event are:

On Friday, September 5, the 2014 Fish Bowl will be the first football game of the season for both Gig Harbor and Peninsula schools. Held at Peninsula High School, kickoff will be at 7:00p.m., however you’ll definitely want to be early to make sure that you have a seat. Gates will open at 5:00

$6.00 Adults

$4.00 Peninsula School District Jr. High Students with ASB

$2.00 Senior Citizens and Children (Elementary)

FREE - PHS and GHHS Students with ASB

“...Nonetheless, at the heart of it all, our community is cheering for their other members of the community. “ but the Peninsula High School Athletic Director urges fans to be at the gate by 6:30 to ensure a ticket and to be on time for kickoff. Last year, in a phenomenal game, the Tides managed to taste victory. However, in both 2011 and 2012, it was the Seahawks who had been victorious. It’s anyone’s guess who will win the 2014 Fish Bowl, and there’s only one way to find out – get your tickets and go!

As always, please be sure to refrain from any alcohol or tobacco use on school grounds. Also, please no noise makers or handheld signs. Freshman teams will be playing at 6:00p.m. on the RA field on Wednesday, September 3. The JV game will be held on Monday, September 8 (time is still to be determined). We look forward to seeing you on September 5. Make sure to wear your Tides or Seahawks gear and come celebrate the awesome football teams that call Gig Harbor their home. Like what you read? Home&Essentials PERMACULTURE

Creating Sustainable Abundant Food Sourcing and Environmental Improvement. By Sarah Polyakov. EVEN THOUGH THE TOPIC of sustainability has generated widespread attention since the 1960’s, the issues that sustainability seeks to address are as old as the advent of the industrial revolution. For the past 300 years, human expansion and subsequent use of natural resources has been accelerating at such a speed that our global ecosystem cannot recover. Still, even prior to the industrial revolution and as much as 1,000 years ago, cultural expansion and the motivation to conquer new lands were driven by the fact that many cultures had exhausted their native forests and subsequently their source of fuel and shelter. In other words, the over-use of resources is not a new issue. But, with a growing and unsustainable global population, every natural resource from forests, to farm crops, to water sources, has come into sharp focus. Many scientists are realizing that if we do not take measures to counteract this destructive cycle, we all lose. In the late 1970’s, the term permaculture was coined to describe a type of agriculture that fits seamlessly into an ecosystem and creates a sustainable food source for a community. During the late 1970’s, this movement gained momentum, but then quickly fizzled out as corporate agriculture became the major supplier of U.S. food sources. Now, as scientists warn us about growing environmental concerns, acquiring sustainable food sources and finding ways to reverse environmental damage is on people’s minds again. Subsequently, permaculture is making an incredibly large comeback. Bill Mollison, one of the people who brought permaculture into the national spotlight, describes it as thus: “Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than

against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless labor; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single product system.” In more practical terms, permaculture is simply a method through which to organically farm, while maximizing contribution to the surrounding ecosystem, instead of becoming a detriment. The finished product, using permaculture design, will produce both an agriculture system and an ecosystem that thrives and is much greater than the sum of its parts. In other words, it goes further than the concept of leaving no footprint since it actually enhances and grows the surrounding ecosystems, including forests and watersheds. Permaculture also has three core tenants: caring for the earth, caring for people, and returning surplus. The premise is that as humans, we must first care for the earth in ways that create abundance. Then, we must ensure that access to necessary resources is available for all. Finally, we must find ways to reduce waste, recycle, and reinvest surplus in both communities and the earth. However, these are not esoteric principles that are removed from our daily lives. Permaculture design can be leveraged well in both a ten-square foot patio garden as well as large-scale agriculture. If you would like to know more about how you too can incorporate the principles of permaculture into your home garden, Oregon State University offers a free online course that0 anyone is able to join. Please visit their website for up to date information. I invite you to take a deeper look into permaculture since its practices, when successfully implemented, create a better world for all of us.

Home Management Professional

Simply Spotless

Savor spending time outdoors with a few outdoor activities. By Sarah Friessen, owner of Gig Harbor Home Management. AUGUST IS THE MONTH where we savor spending time outdoors. If we aren’t having dinner on the deck, then we’re most likely visiting a friend’s patio! Whether the kids are running around at our feet, or we’re enjoying grown-up conversations and great food, everyone’s smiling in the sun. It’s prime time to provide extra entertainment and laughter in your backyard. Set out a few chairs and throw your own impromptu party with a few outdoor games. When you host a backyard game get-together, you might find your house is the new go-to place for friends and family. Gig Harbor Home Management invites to round out your summer by trying the games below. Mölkky (yardgames.us) This strategy game can be enjoyed by folks of all ages. Toss the throwing dowel and knock over skittles. Topple one skittle and get the amount of points branded on that skittle, topple multiple skittles and get the amount of points equaling the amount of skittles toppled. First one to 50 points wins! Mölkky is a great way for children to learn math skills while having fun. Lawn Twister (Pinterest.com)

Maintain. Protect. Organize. Peace of mind strategies for home.

GigHarborHomeManagement.com

Play Twister on your grass! Simply use spray paint for the colored circles. The soft grass cushions any falls and it’s always fun to lay around in the yard. KUBB (fruitsuperdesign.com) Be the first team to knock down all your kubbs and then the king, or be on the opposite team of the player that knocks down the king before knocking down all

16   Gig Harbor Living Local | www.GoGigHarbor.com

of their kubbs. Watch out: Knocking down the king without knocking down the kubbs is like sinking the eight ball out of turn. Cornhole (Cornhole.com) Think beanbag toss… but with rules, scoring, teams and way more fun. This can be played with 2 or 4 players. Each team has a platform with a hole in it, and 4 corn bags. You take the beanbag, toss it at a rectangular plywood board about 30 feet away, and hope to either stick it somewhere on the platform or sink it through the single hole cut into the surface. Egg & Spoon Relays (USgames.com) A classic for all ages. You can go the old fashioned route and use real eggs and spoons; use plastic Easter eggs; or purchase a wooden version online. Divide players into teams, line them up, and run a classic relay race. If a player drops the egg along the way, he or she must return to the line and begin again. Make the game more challenging by setting up an obstacle course. Or, add another twist: The kids must hop like a bunny, waddle like a duck, crawl like a turtle...the possibilities are endless!

SPORTS RELATED CONCUSSION Zackery Lystedt Law - Educating and protecting young athletes. By Patty Hutchens. UNFORTUNATELY, IT OFTEN takes a tragedy to bring awareness to issues in society, and that is exactly what happened in Washington State when a young teen, Zackery Lystedt, suffered a horrific sports related injury. It was 2006 when Zackery was injured in a football game. Only 13 at the time, Zackery hit his head on the ground after tackling his opponent. In spite of the fact he was holding his head and in pain, he was returned to play later in the game. Following the second half of play, Zackery collapsed and was airlifted to Harborview Medial Center where he immediately underwent surgery to remove both sides of his skull to alleviate increasing pressure in his brain. The rehabilitation was long and included 20 months on a feeding tube and nearly three years before Zackery could stand up, but even then that simple feat was accomplished with help from others. While tragic, the awareness Zackery’s injury brought to the world of concussions and youth sports has likely saved many from the same life altering consequences he experienced. In May 2009 the State of Washington passed a bill titled the Zackery Lystedt Law, named in honor of the courageous young man. The driving force behind the law was to protect young athletes from the life altering consequences that concussions can bring and to educate coaches and other leaders of young athletes about the signs and symptoms of a brain injury.

253.432.4418 GigHarborBrainTraining.com Lee@GigHarborBrainTraining.com

The law requires that a youth athlete who has been removed from play due to a concussion may not return to play until the athlete is evaluated by a licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussion and receives written clearance to return to play from that health care provider. In addition, each year all players and their parents or guardians are required to read, sign and return an informed consent document that details the nature and risk of a concussion or head injury. Included in the document are signs and symptoms of a concussion. In addition to informed consent for the players and their families, the law was designed to ensure all coaches are educated in the nature and risk of concussions and head injuries prior to the first practice. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 3.5 million sports related concussions occur each year in the United States. If you suspect that you or your child has suffered a concussion, see a medical provider right away. They can help evaluate the condition and get you or your loved one on the road to recovery. For more information and to access resources related to the Zackery Lystedt Law, please visit www.doh. wa.gov/CommunityandEnvironment/ Schools/EnvironmentalHealth/ ConcussionManagement.aspx.

FINANCIAL FOCUS | EDWARD JONES

ARE YOU A BABY BOOMER? Don’t let retirement plans go bust.

Article for use by Edward Jones financial advisor Erin Abrigo of Gig Harbor.

Seventy-two percent of non-retired boomers think they will probably be forced to delay retirement, and 50% have little confidence that they will ever be able to retire, according to a recent AARP survey.

IF YOU’RE A BABY BOOMER, you’re at the point in life where, if you haven’t actually entered retirement, you’re at least approaching the outskirts. But if you’re like many of your fellow boomers, you may be experiencing more than a little trepidation over your financial prospects as a retiree. That’s why it’s so important for you to determine what steps to take to help improve your chances of enjoying a comfortable retirement. Just how worried are baby boomers about their future? Consider these numbers: Seventytwo percent of non-retired boomers think they will probably be forced to delay retirement, and 50% have little confidence that they will ever be able to retire, according to a recent AARP survey. Other surveys show a similarly bleak outlook among the baby boom generation. Fortunately, when it comes to building resources for retirement, you have options. Of course, if you’re in one of the younger age cohorts of the baby boom generation, your possibilities are greater — you may still have time to take measures such as boosting your 401(k) and IRA contributions, reducing your debts and positioning your portfolio to provide you with a reasonable amount of growth potential. But even if you are pretty close to retirement, or at least close to the point where you initially expected to retire, you can act to better your outcome. For one thing, you could re-evaluate your planned date of retirement. If you really

don’t mind your job and could extend your working life for even a couple of years, you could help yourself enormously in at least three ways: • You’ll add on to your retirement accounts. The longer you work, the more you can contribute to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employerssponsored account. • You may be able to delay taking Social Security. You can start taking Social Security as early as age 62, but your benefits will be permanently reduced unless you wait until your Full Retirement Age (FRA), which will likely be 66 or 67. Your payments can increase if you delay taking your benefits beyond your Full Retirement Age, up to age 70. • You may be able to delay tapping into your retirement vehicles. The longer you wait until you begin withdrawals from your IRA and 401(k), the more time you are giving these accounts to potentially grow. (Once you turn 70 ½, you will need to generally start taking withdrawals from a traditional IRA

and a 401(k) or similar plan, but you don’t face this requirement with a Roth 401(k) account.) As an alternative to delaying your retirement — or possibly as an additional step you can take along with a delay — you may be able to adjust your investment mix to provide you with the combination of growth and income that can help carry you through your retirement years. You can also be strategic about which investments you start taking withdrawals from, possibly allowing your portfolio to grow more than you had envisioned. Start thinking now about ways you can help yourself achieve the retirement lifestyle you’ve pictured. You may want to consult with a professional financial advisor who can suggest the strategies and techniques most appropriate for your situation. In any case, with some careful planning, you can be a boomer whose retirement plans don’t go bust. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

PERSONAL INJURY IN A NUTSHELL What you need to know. By Richard P. Patrick, Attorney.

SOMETIMES INDIVIDUALS make errors in judgment that cause injury to others. Most of these events are accidents. Common types of “personal injury” accidents include: automobile accidents, medical malpractice, and slip and falls. In this article, the basics of the personal injury claims and damages will be discussed. The basic starting point in determining if an individual has a personal injury claim is to

The main types of compensation an injured party is entitled to include: property damage, past lost wages and medical expenses, future lost wages and medical bills, and pain and suffering. ask the question: “Did the person that caused the injury have a duty to act in such a manner as to not cause the accident.” If the answer is yes, then the person that caused the injury or property damage may be financially responsible for the damages. The main types of compensation an injured party is entitled to include: property damage,

past lost wages and medical expenses, future lost wages and medical bills, and pain and suffering.

greater the medical bills the greater the pain and suffering. Compensation for pain and suffering is not taxable.

Usually it’s easy to calculate property damages; however, it can be frustrating. For example, it often seems like most people do not get enough money to replace a totaled vehicle. Usually insured parties are entitled to the fair market value of damaged property; but often people have an inflated idea of the fair market value of property.

Navigating a personal injury claim can be a daunting experience. Almost all personal injury attorneys take these cases on a contingency fee basis and will meet with individuals to discuss a case for free. It’s always a good idea to seek the advice of a personal injury attorney to discuss an event, whether one would like to handle it on one’s own, or needs more expertise.

It’s also easy to calculate past lost wages and medical expenses. Pay-stubs and tax returns are often the basis for this calculation although sometimes a letter from an employer can. A copy of medical bills, paid or unpaid, is the general standard used to calculate past medical expenses. Future lost wages and medical bills can be more difficult to calculate. This calculation is a lot easier to do if an individual has a longterm, steady job. However, it can be difficult if someone is a fisherman, or otherwise self-employed. Future medical expenses are usually calculated by obtaining a diagnosis (nature of the injury), prognosis (a forwardlooking perspective of the injury), and treatment plan (specific medical treatment needed) from a physician and then converting that information into a dollar amount. The items above are things we can buy at fair market value. Nonetheless, there is no fair market value for pain and suffering. Generally speaking, in Washington State, the

RACE FOR A SOLDIER Reaching for a life worth living. By Annmarie Huppert, 343 Solutions.

NEXT MONTH THOUSANDS OF MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN will be running in our streets. The upcoming Race For A Soldier half marathon is an example of Gig Harbor’s commitment to health, community, and developing lives worth living. Life – just like healing from Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD) - is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind; but, once we cross that Narrows Bridge and cruise into the beauty of our little harbor town, we’re reminded that life has more to offer than mere survival.

What am I trying to protect myself from? Then let your mind come up with all the negative, scary possibilities. Try not to judge, just gather information since your subconscious mind has something important to say. Often, once we air our concerns, they don’t seem as relevant or daunting. Remember, our thoughts and fears can only affect us if we choose to live life based on them.

After all, merely sprinting through life without a sense of community is an extra and unnecessary burden to add to an already stressful existence. But, instead of merely surviving each day, try taking a step in the opposite direction by trying a new way of thinking by beginning with the end in mind. Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People made this suggestion in his best-selling book. He discovered that by “beginning with the end in mind”, that is deciding the end goal first, and then living from this positively focused perspective can cause you to thrive. What does a thriving life that includes interconnection with our community look like for you? Does it mean you will make time to enjoy our harbor’s delights? Maybe such a life means making a commitment to run in the upcoming marathon; or even exploring the possibility of healing from PTSD. If you had all the money and time you needed to design a life free of stress, what would your life look like? Next, consider that often we are the ones holding ourselves back from enjoying a life worth living. When thinking of that blissful life, do you feel a sense of resistance? After all, resistance, regardless of the commitment or activity, is often a normal part of growth and healing. Take time to discover what resistance is trying to tell you. You can start by asking yourself: What are my fears? What associations have I made about getting what I want?

In the case of valid concerns, try to seek out examples of people who have successfully overcome similar issues and done the thing you’re resisting. Then, make a deal with yourself: I promise, if success includes stressful, scary things, I absolutely won’t do it! But, I’ll at least take a look to see what’s possible. You’ll soon realize success is possible, especially if you join the like-minded people running, walking, or cheering for the Race For A Soldier. Regardless of your vision of success, getting out of your own way is the first step and then engaging in your community through purposeful activities like Race For A Soldier is the next step. Even if you have never believed that you can thrive, remember that it’s never too late to start choosing a life without stress.

“. . . a practical and personal approach to empowering those who suffer with PTSD to move beyond hopelessness to healing.” - Editor, Friesen Press

Teaching stewardship through fun. By Sarah Polyakov.

MANY OF US ARE UNAWARE of the natural treasures right under our noses; or in this case, right under the waves. Puget Sound, the second largest estuary in the United States, is rich in marine, freshwater and wetland species. Each year Puget Sound’s numerous glacier-carved channels are renewed by fresh water from the mountains as 10,000 rivers and streams feed its watersheds. The Puget Sound’s climate, 2,500 miles of shoreline, nutrient-rich waters, and diverse habitats sustain a variety of wildlife in salt marshes, wetlands and bays. The diverse ecosystem within Puget Sound includes invertebrates, birds, fish, mammals, underwater plants, and even the tiny organism, plankton. In fact, Puget Sound is so diverse that individuals who like to scuba dive often travel from other countries to dive in our waters. The Sound is also home to a variety of marine mammals. But the most famous of these are the three distinct pods of native orcas. Each native orca pod even has its own culture and language. However, due to the commercial salmon fishing industry, these native pods are in great danger of becoming extinct due to over-fishing of the orca’s primary food source. But, the orca is not the only Puget Sound resident who is in danger. Birds like the great blue heron have been losing their nesting grounds due to shoreline development. They are also competing with bald eagles, another bird with dwindling populations, for the same nesting areas on Puget Sound’s shores.

The good news is there are many local citizens who are taking action to reverse these trends. One group in particular, Harbor WildWatch, is using interactive education techniques to raise awareness about the treasures contained beneath Puget Sound’s waters.

Through fun and interactive workshops, Harbor WildWatch’s goal is to inform area residents about our local ecosystem and to encourage greater involvement in preserving our natural resources.

Harbor WildWatch, a 501(c)(3) corporate entity, was founded in 2004 by a Gig Harbor citizen who was concerned about the sustainability of the marine resources within the Puget Sound basin. Their mission is to provide learning opportunities about the environment that inspire stewardship of the Puget Sound. Through fun and interactive workshops, Harbor WildWatch’s goal is to inform area residents about our local ecosystem and to encourage greater involvement in preserving our natural resources. Harbor WildWatch has a variety of fun outreach programs for the public. These programs include Get Your Feet Wet, an interpretive touch tank program at local beaches; Harbor Outreach Program, classroom science workshops for local students; Explore the Beach, a student field program; seaStars & Beyond, a junior naturalist training program; and Pier into the Night, a night-time public viewing of marine creatures using submersible lights. These programs at Harbor WildWatch were introduced in order to allow visitors the opportunity to see, touch, and ask questions about the unique creatures that call Puget Sound home. The main objectives of Harbor WildWatch continue to focus on: • Inspiring stewardship for the Puget Sound through innovative educational opportunities, • Providing challenging student programs that encourage problem-solving, increase science literacy, and promote respect for our natural environment,

SilverWaterTM Ancient health remedy reborn in local market. By Sarah Polyakov.

THERE IS A LOT MORE to silver than meets the eye. Silver is more than just a beautiful metal that we have formed, for many centuries, into jewelry and coins. In fact, many different cultures have used silver as a wound dressing and to combat infections for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians believed the bones of their gods were made of silver and it was a precious metal to the royal dynasties. In ancient Greece and Rome silver was used to disinfect food and water supplies. Silver was used in India in Ayurveda as a tonic and rejuvenating agent for patients who were debilitated by age or disease. In more recent times, royalty consumed their food on plates made of silver and from silver utensils. They instinctively knew silver protected them from disease. In the great dynasties of China, the emperors always used chopsticks fashioned of silver. During the Middle Ages, silver actually prevented those who wore it from contracting the black plague.

YOUR HEALTH The Silver ion is the most potent and available form of silver and is known to deliver some serious benefits to your immune system and overall health.

Indeed, silver has been a powerful antibiotic throughout the ages. As early as the nineteenth century, silver was scientifically proven to possess powerful medicinal qualities. Thus, it was used as an antibiotic, an anti-fungal, and cold remedy. The FDA approved it in 1920 since its properties were proved to have these medicinal qualities. Most recently, silver has been used on a large scale to effectively purify water sources that supply villages across Europe. Within naturopathic medicine, silver is frequently used to fight fungal infections, to heal burns, wounds, cuts, rashes, and sunburns. Silver can also be used to sterilize many things in your home such as air conditioning ducts. Now you too can easily get the health benefits of silver by drinking our crisp, clean, and pure SilverWater™ beverage. SilverWater™ is the first and only functional water enhanced with the purifying power of silver ions. The Silver ion is the most potent and available form of silver and is known to deliver some serious benefits to your immune system and overall health.

RACE FOR A SOLDIER. Join us in giving our troops permission to start dreaming. By Sarah Polyakov. MANY OF US BREATHE a sigh of relief when our ever-faithful and brave United States troops return home from an international tour of duty. We are relieved because now they will be safe and sound with their loved ones and have the opportunity to live normal lives. But, in some individual cases, this could not be further from the truth. Even though the smoke of battle has cleared, oftentimes the memory of battle is enduring. Many of our unselfish service men and women come home only to be plagued with the inner demon of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Though they may appear to be integrating well on the outside, many of these honorable men and women are struggling on the inside. PTSD is

Free movies under the stars. By Sarah Polyakov. Don’t have weekend plans? It’s all good because Cinema Gig Outdoor Movies has got you covered. Saturday night is Family Night and all movies are shown in Skansie Park on the beautiful downtown Gig Harbor waterfront.

a very serious illness that can lead individuals to choose destructive coping mechanisms, or worse, to make life-ending choices. Race for a Soldier was created as a support system for returning soldiers who are struggling with PTSD. On the race’s website it states, “Our mission is to raise awareness and funds to support programs that enrich the lives of soldiers and their families in a tangible way.” Their aim is to introduce programs that help soldiers heal internal wounds and create positive outcomes in building a new life. But most of all, those who founded Race For A Soldier want to change the meaning of the acronym PTSD and assign a new meaning: Permission To Start Dreaming. They hope to emblazon this concept on the hearts and minds of soldiers as they reintegrate into daily civilian life. Now you too can be involved in this incredibly worthy cause by picking up your running shoes and joining either a two-mile race course or the half-marathon. All levels of athletic ability are both welcomed and encouraged for this event. It does not matter if this is your first time running a race or your hundredth time.

Please join them for films like Wall-E, The Help, Remember the Titans, The Jungle Book, and The Black Stallion. Movies begin at dusk, but will not be held during rain or high winds. Please bring blankets or chairs and your family and friends. We will see you there! This program is provided to our community by the returning sponsors of TaylorThomason Insurance and MultiCare Gig Harbor Medical Park. Additional help is provided by Gig Harbor Kiwanis, Harbor WildWatch and the Tom Taylor Family YMCA. We also thank the Gig Harbor Film Festival for ongoing support of this enjoyable event. For the complete movie schedule, please visit: gigharborlocalevents.com

All of the runners are there to support the same cause: to show returning service men and women that they are not alone, to support programs that help our soldiers heal their wounds, and to encourage soldiers that they can redefine their core sense of self. But most of all, runners are there to send the supportive message that PTSD does not have to be a shackle; Race For A Soldier concretely demonstrates to our troops that they now have Permission To Start Dreaming. For more information on how to help, please visit their website at: www.raceforasoldier.org.

Zephyr Yacht Services Keeping your boat in ship-shape condition. By Sarah Polyakov. IN GIG HARBOR, we are blessed to have a boating season that lasts from early spring to late fall. With so many interesting things to see and do during each season, it’s no wonder Gig Harbor residents love boating. But, whether we watch Orcas during July or take advantage of the crisp, clear October afternoons, we all have one thing in common: most of us do not have the time to keep our vessels appearing in ship-shape condition. Even so, who wants to spend hours detailing a vessel while it is more fun to be out on the water enjoying it with friends? After all, boats that are kept in the Pacific Northwest require more ongoing maintenance for reasons that include more than just our unique weather conditions and nearby industrial runoff. Many folks may not frequently have time to boat, and as a result, growth on their boats accumulates quickly. But, the most important thing to keep at bay is mold. Luckily, there is a new marine detailing service in Gig Harbor that has you covered. Nicholas Beurskens and Thomas Dietrich recently founded Zephyr Yacht Services in order to offer full detailing and cleaning services that are ecologically friendly. Since no two boats are alike, they offer flexible and reliable custom care plans for each vessel they service. At Zephyr Yacht Services they know that your boat is a major investment. But, even more important, strict upkeep of your vessel is necessary for it to hold its value and to preserve its beauty for many years to come. There are also the practical matters of vessel care plans. Did you know that a freshly waxed hull reduces drag and reduces fuel consumption? With rising gas prices, knowing there are ways to cut gasoline bills is great news.

Christian Lewis

PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL. BY MERIDITH HATCH. PHOTOS BY VERONICA FOLEY. FOCUSED AND DETERMINED, incoming Peninsula High senior Christian Lewis is a true competitor in multiple sports. At the age of 13, Christian played on one of the teams representing USA in the Youth Soccer World Cup, taking him to Denmark and Sweden. “There were so many players and teams from all around the world that had been playing soccer their entire lives. Even though we didn’t do that well, only winning one game against Norway, I realized that I just had to be the best that I could be and forget about everyone else around me.” Besides playing Harbor Premier soccer, Christian also plays varsity tennis and baseball at Peninsula High (PHS), serving as one of the baseball varsity team captains last year. Christian plays PHS varsity tennis with his doubles partner, Hayden Skidmore, making first team all-league tennis the last two years, and was named Player of the Year his junior year. “Christian is very quick to the ball and has the ability to make just about every play,” says Hayden. “He is always working his heart out to achieve his goals. I know my partner is strong-minded and I can always rely on him to pull through in any situation.” Hayden further describes his doubles partner as “very focused into his athletics and academics, leaving him

with less free time than the average high schooler.” This ability to focus has sustained Christian in academics as well, where he maintains a 4.0 GPA and foresees a future in aeronautical engineering and applied mathematics. “My favorite subject is mathematics. I really enjoy being able to figure out problems and equations,” Christian explains. “Being able to put this finished problem into a physical form is incredibly rewarding for me.”

Favorite Teacher: “I don’t really have a favorite teacher, but the largest mentor to me has been my father, who has supported me in everything I have done.”

When asked about college, Christian sees a four-year college in his future, though he has not settled on one yet. “I want to play

GIG HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL. BY MERIDITH HATCH. GIG HARBOR HIGH RISING SENIOR Patrick Spieker is as talented in academics as he is in sports. He plays tennis, track, and basketball, playing on the varsity basketball team his sophomore and junior years. In track Patrick runs the 1600 meters and was close to making the league meet qualifying time this year. Patrick is the tennis team captain his second year in a row and plays singles with the Gig Harbor High (GHHS) tennis team. He was the first alternate to the West Central District Tournament. Patrick says, “One of the things I love about sports is that each sport presents a different challenge. Tennis singles and track are both solitary sports; a huge burden is placed on the individual. Basketball, on the other hand, challenges me to work with others and contribute to something greater than myself.” He has learned that you must love what you do. Referring to tennis coaches PollyAnn Butler and Berta Brynstad as

examples, Patrick explains how they show up to practice every day and teach, demonstrate, laugh and encourage, letting their infectious love of the game show through every time they step on the court. Academically, Patrick excels, taking several AP classes and carrying a 4.0 GPA. He is on the Gig Harbor Speech and Debate team, finishing first at a competition, fifth at State in the same event, and competed at nationals in Kansas City, Missouri. He is part of the GHHS Chapter of the Technology Student Association (TSA) and placed second in the Animatronics competition at the State Conference. He took first place at the State Conference in Extemporaneous Speaking on Technical Topics and placed second in the same event at the national level. Patrick is a founding member of the GHHS Computer Science Club. “In college, I’d like to study computer science and mechanical engineering. As

Even if I were a good enough athlete to compete at the varsity level, I’d still opt not to play and instead focus on my studies. I will definitely play sports at the intramural level, though. The Big Catch Larger than life sentinel watches over Gig Harbor’s past and future. By Sarah Polyakov.

IT ALL STARTED with one century-old photograph hung on the wall at a Tacoma restaurant. A faded black and white image hung on the wall that discreetly captured a salmon cannery worker during his daily routine. As the fisherman determinedly coaxed his prize through changing currents, little did he know that years later, he would become a larger-than-life icon commemorated in bronze. The Big Catch is a legacy bronze sculpture, photographed by Asahel Curtis, inspired by Dave Senner, and sculpted by Douglas Granum. Citizens For The Big Catch (CFBC) gifted this sculpture to the people of Gig Harbor so that all may enjoy it for many years to come. Fishing villages and ports around the world are home to emblematic icons and CFBC’s hope is for Gig Harbor to welcome The Big Catch as their own hometown icon. The community of Gig Harbor is invited to claim this sculpture as their own cultural marker; a symbol that evokes the harbor’s spirit and draws interest from both tourists and residents alike.

CFBC’s enthusiastic spokeswoman, Seana Wohlfeil, said, “We hope The Big Catch will be to Gig Harbor what The Little Mermaid is to Copenhagen,” referring to the enchanting bronze sylph viewed by tens of thousands each year in Denmark. However, The Big Catch is most aligned in character with the well-recognized Man at the Wheel in Glouster, Massechusetts, who welcomes both tourists and community members alike. Gig Harbor is rightfully proud of its fishing legacy. After all, what would the town be without the fleet, the industry, and the families who established this fishing village? Regional history was on Dave Senner’s mind in 2011 when he invited artist Doug Granum to lunch in Tacoma. Of the image the sculpture was based on, Senner pointed out that, “This is one of the purest photographs-- he already looked like bronze in that rubber suit.” Senner enthusiastically continued, “All you see is the guy and the fish. It captures a moment of history that will never happen again here - boats are bigger, technology is different, the essence of that era captured in bronze ties people to the way it used to be 100 years ago.” So it was that The Big Catch was born. Senner obtained a larger copy of the Asahel Curtis photo through the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma. During his

lunch meeting with Granum, he asked, “Do you think you could make that in bronze?” Granum was delighted by this prospect, in part because he had worked on fishing boats in Alaska in late 1960s to pay for his college education. Because of his own history with fishing boats, Granum immediately related to the context and mood of the unknown fellow in the photograph. During the three years since that lunch date, Granum has turned the unknown fellow in the two-dimensional photograph into a three-dimensional six-and-a-half foot tall clay maquette, carved with all the rich detail of the subject’s experience. Granum has an interactive vision for his work, noting that, “Through this sculpture, we want to capture and invite the unyielding curiosity of the public about this place we call Gig Harbor-- the harbor of the gig, a small rowing craft”, speaking to this image as an emblem for the town. “What we are doing belongs to a precise place and context,” Grandum added about the work. The figure itself is lean and strong as the fisherman’s bent wrist hoists a mighty king salmon. His face reflects many expressions: pride, focus, and the premonition of fatigue. His apron appears slimy, his boots are ripped and a bandage wraps his broken thumb. Finally, the notch torn from the fisherman’s ear is just one

The observer is left to wonder if his ear notch had been won in a pub brawl or if it was the result of a carelessly handled fishing hook. Senner requested the sculpture to be rendered true to the photograph down to the smallest detail. To meet this requirement, lasers and three-dimensional printing, along with Granum’s sensitive hands-on detailing and poignant understanding, resulted in an exceptional depiction of the man in the photograph. “It is my wish to

catch the mystery of this man, to snatch this moment from history and yield up his very real life,” Granum shared. But, most of all, the finished work seems to contain a soul of its own, that invites observers to come closer. Funds for The Big Catch are coming entirely from the community. Funding is not complete and more donations will be required to move the sculpture through the production process. Once that occurs, it will be bronzed at Two Ravens Studio in Tacoma and installed near the Harbor History Museum. The detail, emotion, and unique physical characteristics of the gentleman and the iconic salmon comprise a compelling historical identity that resonates with Gig Harbor and honors those same fishing families who live here today. Looking through the eyes of The Big Catch, Granum offered these closing thoughts: “Our fisherman stands, his heart bronze, staring out over our history. What does he see?” Perhaps a crowd of proud citizens and curious tourists happily immersed in the genuine heritage that rings true in Gig Harbor today.

ShopinStyle Celebrate Summer THROW THE BEST END-OF-SUMMER BASH IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. BY MIKE TRITTIN. I HAVE ALWAYS SEEN summer as a time where we have the opportunity to celebrate our relationships with friends and family members. Our beautiful Northwestern summers give us even more excuses to have get-togethers outside. There’s nothing quite like the way the water shimmers in the sun, the fresh smell of the air, and, of course, the long evenings. What better way to celebrate summer than by throwing the best End-of-Summer bash in your neighborhood? So, here is your personal End-of-Summer party checklist from your friendly neighborhood realtor and BBQ fanatic: • Guest-List. Send invites out a few weeks in advance. People make the party, so make sure everyone gets time to RSVP. • Know the Menu. Pot-luck style is always fun to taste everyone’s best dish. Or, if you’re feeling ambitious, it’s a blast being able to cook for everyone. Try my recipes at the end of this article. • Bar & Bartender. Bartending is my favorite since I get to have great conversations with everyone. It’s also a good safety measure because you can keep an eye on the party’s “wild-cards” and start making margaritas a bit more virgin. • Good Tunes. There are tons of options for speakers these days, many online stations that you can play from your phone! Check out the awesome genre stations on Pandora (www.pandora.com). • Give back. Use your party as an opportunity to draw guest’s attention to a great cause in our community. Put a tip jar at the bar that will go to a philanthropic cause of your choice. • Have games and possibly raffles for extra entertainment. There is nothing like setting up a few classic card games or even several types of board games. Make sure you provide lots of unplugged and old-fashioned activities for everyone to enjoy. My Recipe for London Broil on the BBQ You’ll need: 1 London broil, Kosher Flake Salt, Montreal Steak Seasoning, Butter, Garlic Powder. • Salt the beef for 1 hour each side with kosher flake salt. This is a tenderizer. Then coat with good seasoning — I recommend Montreal Steak Seasoning. • Set grill to high heat and sear beef for a couple minutes each side. • Lower Heat to half power. Put a quarter stick of butter and sprinkle garlic powder (and add cayenne pepper for a kick) on the beef. Butter will melt over the beef as it cooks. Flip & repeat - around 8 minutes each side for medium. More with Mike: www.Realtyin253.com | MikeTrittin@KW.com | 253.229.3721

Health&Lifestyle The Healthy Secret? Are probiotics the possible secret to weight loss, healthy aging and stress reduction? By Sarah Polyakov.

SOME SAY YES. The human digestive system naturally is home to more than 500 different types of bacteria. These bacteria help keep the intestines healthy, assist in digesting food, and keep our immune systems healthy. Probiotics are organisms such as bacteria or yeast that have been demonstrated to improve health. Even though these bacteria are present in the body, they are also available in supplement form as well as in foods such as Greek yoghurt. These days, many people are touting the benefits of supplementing one’s diets with probiotics. Though the idea of taking live bacteria may

seem strange at first, humans have ingested probiotics through the food they eat for thousands of years. For several years probiotics have been known to greatly lessen the symptoms of ailments like Crohns disease. But, they have also demonstrated the ability in some research studies to stave off acne, to relieve stress, to assist in weight loss, and to promote overall healthy aging. How Do Probiotics Work? Within our digestive system, a healthy balance of friendly bacteria

must be present in order for our systems to function optimally. Probiotics work to enhance the numbers of good bacteria in our guts and thus stave off digestive diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome. On the other hand, digestive disorders happen when the balance of friendly bacteria in the intestines becomes disturbed. This can happen after an infection or after taking a strong course of antibiotics. Intestinal problems can also arise when the lining of the intestines is damaged, and taking probiotics may help the intestinal track to recover. “Probiotics can improve intestinal function and maintain the integrity of the lining of the intestines,” says Stefano Guandalini, MD, professor of pediatrics and gastroenterology at the University of Chicago Medical Center. These friendly organisms may also help fight bacteria that cause diarrhea. Weight A recent study in the journal of science showed that people with a healthy body mass index have a different make-up of gut bacteria than people who have a high body mass index. Doctors are researching how to leverage bacteria to develop natural weight management techniques. Though scientists have not yet identified the specific combination of probiotic strain and dose, they are still encouraging the public to supplement with probiotics to assist in maintaining weight. brain chemical referred to as BDNF. In humans, it has been demonstrated that such circumstances would lead to extreme stress, anxiety, and perhaps depression. Thus, it has been theorized that supplementing one’s diet with the right probiotic supplement can aid in general stress management. Choosing the Right Probiotic Of course, there are natural sources of probiotics that humans have been ingesting for centuries. Natural sources include: Greek yoghurt and fermented foods such as tempeh. There are many probiotic supplements on the market, and it is difficult to sift through all of the information to choose the right one for you. While I do not recommend any one brand, I do recommend criteria that should be used when choosing a product. • Make sure that the probiotic supplement you are buying contains live strains of bacteria. • Read the label on each supplement and make sure it contains one or more of the following strains of bacteria: lactobacillus bulgaricus, streptococcus thermophiles, lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacteria, and lactobacillus casei. • Look for supplements that contain around 10 billion live organisms. A daily dose of 20 billion live organisms has been demonstrated to be the most effective dose. • Make sure that you refrigerate your probiotic supplement to ensure that live organisms do not die quickly.

Middle-Aged Musings Nothing is as easy as you want it to be. By Teresa Pesce.

This column is dedicated to the Middle-Aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older”, acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. “IT’S EASY!” No it’s not. It never was. And it gets harder as time goes on. But what do you expect weight-loss marketers to tell you? You’ll lose weight with this special drink or magic pill if you also drastically reduce your calories and work out beyond your comfort zone five days a week? Use this exercise device and develop abs (arms, thighs, buns) of steel if you also drastically reduce your calories and work out beyond your comfort zone five days a week? If they said those things, some day it would occur to you that you don’t need to pay for the special drink, special pills or special exercise unit - you just need to eat less and work out more. Then all the weight-loss marketers would be out of business, and would sit home, eat too much and get fat and out of shape, surrounded by crates of their unsold pills, drinks and exercise machines. Losing weight is hard because eating is easy, pleasant, satisfying, and immediately rewarding and comforting. It’s also a lovely companion to sedentary pursuits like reading and watching TV. “Exercise” is a polite word for the crude process of pushing yourself as you pour sweat. Which would YOU rather do? And as our metabolism slows, the effects of eating double while the effects of exercise dwindle! The perfect in-shape middle-aged life? Less food than ever, more exercise than ever. It’s not easy. It never was. And it’s harder now. So respect the heck out of yourself for rising from your recliner to meet the challenge. I certainly do. The Day You Can’t Do It Anymore A man I knew was a terrific tennis player, and he and his son played often. Then, as his son got older, the father noticed it was taking more out of him to win the matches. One day he confided to a friend that he just wanted to be able to win until his son was 16 years old. Then he would gracefully consent to losing.

Bill Cosby’s TV character, Dr. Cliff Huckstable, came home from jogging one day and said to his wife, “I saw nineteen today.” He meant he was jogging around the track, doing well, when he felt a machineprecision presence moving up behind him and then passing him, breathing at an even pace. It was a young man, 19 years old. And while Cliff Huckstable was still able to run, he couldn’t run like that anymore. His wife smiled and said, “Cliff, do you want to be nineteen again?” He replied, “Only if you’ll be nineteen with me.” It’s not that we want to go back, it’s just that we’re a little surprised that we are not who we were. What do you do on the day you realize you can’t keep up with your former self? I asked a lovely woman in her eighties how she dealt with aging. She said, “I was just glad I could do what I could do whenever I could do it.” This modern age of youth-worship makes us a little more disappointed in our older selves, I think. We judge our new selves harshly. We experience guilt and embarrassment. We exercise too hard or give up completely. And what is “too old?” For athletes, it can be 30. For some Olympians, it’s their late teens! Physically, men supposedly peak at 18! Play the numbers game and you will lose. It’s not a matter of lowering your expectations; it’s a matter of your expectations being realistic. Abilities change but you can always be the best version of you, now. That’s enough of a challenge at any age! I’m no longer my harshest critic. Neither should you be yours. Founder of Sandpoint Onstage, Teresa Pesce is dedicated to supporting and promoting everyone in our community with theatrical gifts, whose age is irrelevant and whose only “weight” is the impact of their art.

It’s not the good life, it’s the best life!

Stress

Get relief with chiropractic care. By Susan Hoffman. WHAT IS YOUR STRESS? Is it being held up in traffic, bills mounting and unable to pay them, annoying relatives, frustrations at work, deadlines, e-mails, or the noisy TV filled with troubles and tragedies? Unfortunately our world is cluttered with the complexities of our industrial age, and with all the technology constantly feeding us information, it can become impossible to diminish our physical and emotional reactions. Everyone uses the word stress, and everyone experiences it one way or another. Many illnesses are actually caused by stress, putting our bodies into a “fight or flight” syndrome, which can have physical effects on our bodies. Luckily Chiropractic care and other stress relief techniques can help us manage and process stress in a healthy way. Chiropractors begin by working with the nerve and spinal function, both of which can be affected by 3 primary stresses - physical, chemical and emotional. Physical stress can include disease processes, organ malfunction, poor nutrition, poor sleep hygiene, and physical injury. Chemical or environmental might encompass extreme noise, weather and physical threats. Emotional is often more difficult to define but could include our reactions in thoughts and emotions to environmental and physical stressors. What we know for sure is that stress does impact our health and wellbeing. Studies of people who have been subjected to chronic stress have found evidence of the negative health effects of stress. These include high blood pressure, damage to muscle tissue, diabetes, infertility, damage to the immune response, and slowed healing from disease and injury.

“Where family is always first.” Celebrating 15 years of Service!

Chiropractors begin by working with the nerve and spinal function, both of which can be affected by 3 primary stresses physical, chemical and emotional.

Some helpful techniques: • Meditate (this helps ease anxiety) • Breathe Deeply (this will slow the heart rate and lowers blood pressure) • Be Present (slow down and focus on awareness) • Reach Out (talk with others and be available and present) • Tune into your body (mentally scan your body to get a sense of where you hold your stress) • Decompress (use a warm wrap around your neck and shoulders for 10 minutes and relax) • Write (write about things that are bothering you) • Let your feelings out (talk, laugh or cry and express anger when you need to) • Do something you enjoy (make time to do something you that gives you pleasure even if you feel that you are too busy)

• Exercise (this is very helpful in managing stress) And you may want to begin with a chiropractic appointment to assess what stressors are happening to your body. The practitioner cannot take away traffic jams, pay your bills, mend family squabbles, alleviate bad bosses, complete your deadlines or quiet our busy and noisy world, but they can help you develop healthy responses to your stresses which are potential causes of bad health and poor coping skills. Because chronic stress can lead to nerve irritation, it is beneficial to see your chiropractor who can help release muscle tension, returning the body to a more balanced and relaxed state. Adjustments also reduce spinal nerve irritation and improve blood circulation. These changes may be enough to convince the brain to turn off the fight or flight response, beginning the process of healing.

Fresh ingredients + locally sourced = 100% delicious. By Sarah Polyakov.

I CANNOT THINK OF ANYTHING BETTER than spending an evening sitting by a cozy fireplace and enjoying a fresh, colorful, and artfully prepared meal with a glass of red wine and a loved one. Thankfully, Gig Harbor restaurateurs Scott and Gail Fuller feel the same way and enthusiastically make such a delicious experience possible to Gig Harbor foodies.

while savoring expertly prepared dinner entrees. Offerings include succulent wild seared scallops drizzled with a sweet onion butter sauce; tender molasses brined pork chops; an Angus choice New York steak finished with a bourbon demi-glaze; or perhaps a Northwest favorite: flaky and moist wild Alaska salmon finished with a tricitrus honey butter.

Chef Scott and his wife Gail believe in creating fresh, flavorful, and simply prepared dishes that are easy on the pocketbook and served up with a smile. Whether you enjoy taking in the evening air on their patio while enjoying savory Thai curry mussels, or enjoying coconut crusted tiger prawns in their elegant bar at happy hour, Green.House Restaurant serves up tempting taste combinations for even the most discriminating palette.

In addition to a wide selection of tempting appetizers, flavorful soups, fresh and crisp salads, irresistible entrees, an extensive wine list, and tantalizing desserts, Green.House Restaurant loves to change up the menu. Come in frequently to sample new, tempting menu items as well as nightly chalkboard specials.

Choose from seafood appetizers such as sashimi-grade Ahi tuna served on wonton chips and garnished with wasabi, cucumber, and avocado. Or how about ordering a couple of appetizers such as house made Dungeness crab cakes and flash-fried calamari with garlic and kalamata olives? In the mood for something more? Enjoy the atmosphere by their cozy fireplace

Green.House Restaurant begins each culinary masterpiece with the highest quality ingredients. In order to provide the freshest ingredients possible, menu items may change seasonally. Whenever possible, their produce, poultry, meat, vegetables, and seafood are sourced from farms, ranches, and fisheries that practice sustainability. Green.House Restaurant is a great place to meet friends for Happy Hour. Their list of microbrews, spirits, as well as their extensive wine list will not disappoint you. Please

sample some of their boutique wines made in small batches, fine regional wines, as well as standby favorites. Chef Scott brings 30+ years of culinary know-how to the Green.House Restaurant. Having served as Executive Chef at Salty’s on Redondo Beach for twenty-one years, he has expertly created exciting flavorforward entrees and appetizers. In 2001, Chef Scott and his wife Gail became partners in one of Olympia’s most iconic waterfront restaurants, Budd Bay Café. With Chef Scott’s extensive seafood repertoire, along with his exciting ingredient pairings, and Gail’s attention to guest service, they assisted in building a thriving business in Olympia. After 12 years in the South Sound they were ready to take on the exhilarating challenge of owning their own restaurant. Soon, they located the perfect venue and subsequently opened the Green.House Restaurant in Gig Harbor. Each day at the Green.House Gail’s warm smile will greet you at the door while Chef Scott leads his team of skilled souschefs. For more information about the Green. Oregon Convention Center

Multnomah Falls.

Portland, Oregon Weekend getaway. By Colin Anderson.

IF YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF EXTRA vacation days you need to use up, then a long weekend to the Rose City might be just the break you need. Portland, Oregon is home to nearly six hundred thousand people, but it feels surprisingly smaller and slower than neighboring Seattle and other cities of its size. It is an active community of mostly easy going people where the line to get into casual Sunday brunch is often twice the wait as a nice sit down dinner. If it’s clear when you arrive in Portland, take a look all around and you should be able to see Mount Tabor, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Hood. You’ll also notice that the scenery is incredibly green. Portland is one of the rainiest large cities in the U.S., but all the showers help create an amazing landscape. Luckily the summer months are quite dry, averaging less than five inches of rain between May and August. Long known as the Rose City, there are plenty of botanical gardens to explore including the famous International Rose Test Garden. The Willamette River runs directly through town splitting downtown from the convention center, mall, and Rose Quarter. Along the river lies Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park, a several mile stretch where people run, bike, sun, throw a Frisbee and otherwise relax. There is a floating maritime museum and also a ferry that arranges cruises up and down the river. One of the most fun experiences in Portland is to meander through the Saturday market, which is now held on Sundays as well. The market is steps off the Waterfront Park and has everything you would expect and plenty you might not. You could stumble across a group of pirates singing sea shanties for change, right across from a stage show featuring jazz musicians. There are vendors selling handmade jewelry, clothing, art, spices and seasonings, and plenty of other trinkets. One stop you should definitely check out is the Spoonman who creates incredible pieces of art with old utensils. The market is kid and dog friendly, and you might find the two playing together in nearby fountains on a hot summer day. Getting around town is easy with plenty of affordable public transportation options. The MAX light rail system connects downtown with the outlying suburbs, and the Portland Streetcar

The market is steps off the Waterfront Park and has everything you would expect and plenty you might not. makes it easy to get to different shopping destinations downtown. There is also an extensive and safe bus system. Best of all are your own two legs. Downtown Portland is easy to navigate and isn’t more than a few square miles. Locals will always help point you in the right direction if you’re feeling lost. Another incredibly unique site in Portland is the seemingly endless line of food carts spread all over town. At last count there were at least six-hundred street vendors cooking up any food you can imagine. Whatever you’re craving you’ll find it along with foods you’ve likely never tried. Best of all most meals are under ten dollars! These carts are regulated by the city so sanitation is typically not a concern and the food is safe

to eat. You could spend your entire weekend just eating from food carts and never come close to having the same thing twice. For beer and sports fans, Portland has plenty of both. There are more breweries here (60+) than any other metropolitan area in the WORLD. There are tasting festivals seemingly every weekend and local pubs carry a wide range of local flavors. For the sports fan, a live soccer game shouldn’t be missed. The atmosphere at a Portland Timbers game is right on par with matches in Europe, and you’ll soon be cheering right along. You can also check out NBA action with the Portland Trailblazers, or watch the Portland Winterhawks battle it out on the ice. You could spend weeks here and barely touch what the city has to offer. There are countless parks, trails, bike paths, shops, dining, and adventures to pursue. Before visiting check with the chamber as there are festivals and celebrations just about every summer weekend. Give Portland a whirl and see why the locals want to “Keep Portland Weird.”
