C R E AT I N G M U LT I - F U N C T I O N A L S PA C E S LET THE CREATIVITY FLOW | BY NIKKI LUTTMANN, INTERIOR DESIGNER

or many of us, certain rooms in our home need to serve dual purposes. Whether that's an office that doubles as a guest room or a dining room that is also a library, it can sometimes be challenging to make these spaces look cohesive and feel just right for both purposes. The key is to look at the room as a whole and design for the room itself, rather than the individual components. For example, in a guest room/office space, look for a desk that matches the bedroom furniture in that room; the space will look much less thrown together. It also helps to keep the space neat and orderly. At the very least, tidy up the desk before your guests arrive—it will help them feel much more at home.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

For multi-purpose spaces that are used together daily, such as the dining room/library mentioned above, it helps to define each space within the room. Successful options include built-in cabinetry around the perimeter of the room, with the dining table taking center stage. Another option is to use half of the room for dining and one half for books. For those with hobbies, it can often feel like you don't have enough space. And for this I say get creative! Personally, I like like to read, paint, sew, knit—you name it! Since we have very little excess space in our home, I have gotten creative as to where I work on crafts. I have an easel set up on my covered back porch. I've found that in winter, I tend to focus on knitting

It helps to define each space within the room. projects anyway. I love to sew, but we don't have a dedicated sewing room. No problem! We use the dining room table for projects but keep the sewing machine in a cupboard near the dining room. Open floor plans are very convenient—but it does make multi-tasking more of a necessity rather than an option. Oftentimes, an entryway is actually part of the living room, leaving guests to walk right into the heart of your home. I like to create a dedicated space within a space by adding an entry table or console, mirror, and basket for keys or other necessities near the front door. Furniture can also serve double duty. If your home is short on bedrooms but long on guests,

think of adding a sleeper-sofa in your living room or office. Murphy beds are becoming popular again as well. For any combination spaces, good storage is key. Finding a convenient place to store linens in your guest room/office for when you do have overnight guests or, like us, sewing storage in your dining room, can make all the difference in how convenient it is to switch back and forth between uses. Again, the concept with multi-use spaces is creativity. Your home should be a place where you can do all the things you love to do. Don't let your floorplan dictate how you use your rooms. Get creative with your ideas, your furniture and your storage!

Generosity and Gratitude THE JOURNEY TO HEALING CAN BEGIN BEFORE YOUR DIVORCE IS FINALIZED

G

By Felicia A. Soleil, JD

enerosity and gratitude. Not words you often think of when hearing about someone’s divorce. Yet, in my divorce mediation practice, these two values show up more frequently than you’d think.

about what it is like to be a mediator, I often explain that I am always heartened to see two people from an intimate partnership able to express gratitude to the other at the end of settlement negotiations for generosity that has been extended by the other.

When couples present for mediation, as opposed to individual legal representation, they have made a decision to navigate the journey of disentangling their marital life together. I describe this as becoming “unmarried.” Many times they need to maintain a parenting partnership and want that to go well. However, couples who only need to separate their financial lives often assert they want to end the relationship respectfully and figure out the challenges of separating together. Sometimes they even hope to maintain an enduring friendship and family ties. Of course, there are times in mediation when one party wants the divorce and the other party has agreed to attend mediation in the hopes of reducing not only the financial cost but the emotional cost as well. Their brain may be screaming “fight,” but their heart knows otherwise.

Of course, not all couples are in this place, and they come to mediation for various other reasons, number one being cost avoidance. They still show up, do the hard work and are seeking a quick resolution so they can get on with their lives without each other. Sometimes the best I can do with these folks is to encourage them to not let bitterness and resentment rule the day as we sort through creating their financial settlements and parenting plans.

It is this head versus heart conundrum that most often drives the divorce mediation process. As humans, we are taught to look out for ourselves while also looking out for others. During the breakup of a marriage, your natural tendency may be to barricade yourself in your corner and come out fighting. This usually comes from a place of fear (although your ego has a role in this as well!). The result may not be what you wanted, but, by gosh, the fight sure felt good. People who can engage in self-regulation and selfreflection recognize that the breakup of their marriage is stressful enough without adding attorneys and courts and more angry feelings to the mix. When I am asked

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

However, more often than not, divorcing parties want to look out for themselves and find a way to make sure that it is not done at the expense of the other party. As we ease through the mediation process, I often see one party slowly consider giving something back they thought they were otherwise entitled to; something they recognize would have been at the expense of the other party. In truly transformational cases, a party may voluntarily offer up even more than would otherwise be expected. Either way, generosity makes a lasting impression, and recognizing that generosity with gratitude, even a simple “Thank you. I know you didn’t have to do that,” can go a long way toward healing. Felicia Soleil helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning for them and their families so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential.

INAUGURAL PENMET WOMEN’S WELLNESS EXPO A SUCCESS By Jillian Chandler | Photos Courtesy of Clickery Photography

ith the mission to empower, enrich and educate women while supporting them in their own individual wellness journeys, the inaugural PenMet Women’s Wellness Expo made its debut last month on July 13. The event, founded by friends Carrianne Ekberg and Jenna Brasch, was held at Sehmel Homestead Park and welcomed approximately 2,000 attendees by the day’s end, in addition to the 70 vendors, more than 60 volunteers and additional staff members.

attempting to do yoga. Due to the popularity of the classes, Jenna plans to offer more of these classes at next year’s event. In addition, they plan to make next year’s expo family friendly with a Kid Zone and kid-friendly vendors. The 50/50 raffle to benefit Terry's House, a safe house for women who were victims of sex trafficking, raised $1,000 in ticket sales, and the winning ticket holder walked away with $500. “We were grateful to have a last-minute matching donor who donated an additional $800 to Terry's House for a total of $1,300,” says Jenna.

According to Jenna, “Our wish for attendees was to leave the event with at least one connection; either a new health resource, a new friend or new information that could be applied to one's individual wellness journey.”

The inaugural PenMet Women's Wellness Expo was everything Jenna and Carrianne had envisioned it would be—and more! “The authentic community connection between our vendors, presenters, sponsors and attendees was unlike anything we had seen at other events in our community,” says Jenna. “The energy this event created around women's wellness was organic, supportive and inspirational! From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank everyone involved in this first year event and to all of those who attended.”

The all-day event included everything from fitness classes, wellness workshops and dozens of wellness vendors to live entertainment, food trucks, a 7Seas Brewing beer garden and more. Jenna says the highlight of the event had to be goat yoga, which was led by Gig Harbor Goat Yoga. These classes filled up quickly, and all participants truly enjoyed connecting with the adorable baby goats while

The mission for the pups and the Tutors with Tails program is to help students who might be struggling with reading skills or reading aloud gain the confidence and skills to do so in a fun environment.

“The concept of the program is simple, but the transformation seen in the children participating in the program is amazing,” says Communities In Schools of Peninsula Site Coordinator Tricia Endsley. “The students here at Evergreen Elementary that read with Rohan are generally quiet and reserved, but as soon as they see their canine buddy it’s like they become different children. They go over and hug him and snuggle right next to him to read.”

“There is so much research revealing the positive benefits of pet therapy,” said Minter Creek Elementary Principal Ty Robuck. “In just a few short weeks, our students have already shown improvement and enjoyment in reading, and we are excited to see their continued literacy growth.”

his past school year, the name Brody was well-known to just about everyone at Minter Creek Elementary. The Golden Retriever was present every Wednesday, and kids were always excited to see him. Alongside owner Jeff Essayan, the pair was the first pet therapy team to participate in the pilot Tutors with Tails reading program, which pairs certified therapy dogs with children learning to read on the Gig Harbor Peninsula. The pilot program was so successful that Brody will have a little more competition for his attention this coming school year. Joining Brody are Rohan and Sasha, who can be found roaming the halls of Evergreen and Harbor Heights elementary.

There are currently three therapy teams lending an ear to students in Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula following the launch of the program at Minter Creek Elementary School last spring. Kathy Weymiller, PSD director of Communications & Community Engagement, says the program has been a source of excitement and pride for students and staff across the Peninsula. “We would love to see this program in every school! Everyone seems happier when the dogs are working to help students to learn.” The kids who read with Sasha and Rohan could not agree more.

The program was set into motion with collaboration between Communities In Schools of Peninsula and the

Peninsula School District. Using animals for therapy is a growing and accepted form of treatment in many circles. Horse therapy is prescribed often for those who have experienced a violent or troubling event, as the calmness of the animal is helpful in soothing one’s emotions. Hospitals bring therapy animals in to visit sick or injured patients as well as family members and caretakers who are under stress. Several prison systems across the country have inmates preparing to be released take care of animals in order that they might remember kindness and responsibility after having to be in survival mode for years in a prison setting.

quick to find their place on their own blanket-covered pad as children gather around to read stories.

Animals do not judge humans based upon looks, background or beliefs, and dogs especially offer great devotion to those who would give them attention and treat them well. The same is now being applied to schools across the country as well-trained dogs serve as a calming and fun presence for children.

“It is so gratifying to see the powerful bond children have with Brody and how their confidence in reading skyrockets” said Jeff. “My favorite part of the day is hearing the kids say, ‘I love you Brody,’ at the end of the reading session.”

Developing reading skills is very important for kids this age, however, the social-emotional impact is equally as important. Children in the program are excited to be included in this special program and this, in turn, makes them feel special. The bond that is formed between the dog and the child is the catalyst for acceptance, which spurs a positive learning environment. Harbor Heights Elementary School Principal Stephanie Strader is thrilled to have the program at her school. “It’s a unique experience for our kids that connects them to school and helps them develop a lifelong love of reading that they might not get in other ways.”

The dramatic academic and emotional improvement seen in students participating in pet therapy programs such as Tutors with Tails is no coincidence. Canine companions meet kids on their own terms, allowing learning to occur in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Children believe it is their duty to teach Brody, Rohan and Sasha the story and how to read when in fact the kids are teaching themselves.

All dogs in the program are certified therapy animals and, along with their owners, go through a rigorous training program through Pet Partners International. Around the district, all are hopeful the program continues to expand. “I would love to see therapy dogs in all of the schools that we serve, including elementary, middle and high school. Everyone loves dogs, and the calming effects that occur when kids get to interact with an animal cannot be measured,” said Cathy Rich, volunteer coordinator and development assistant for Communities In Schools of Peninsula. For questions about the program, please contact Cathy Rich at 253.884.5733 or cathy@cisofpeninsula.org to make arrangements.

eachers know it takes more than themselves to really make an impact on their students’ lives. Teaching assistants, coaches and administrators all work together to ensure that each is supported and given the tools they need to create a successful learning environment. Education isn’t just about the books either, as young people mature and experience changes in their bodies and minds, relationships and emotions. This is where school counselors come in; lending a helping hand on a wide range of issues that can come up. “The thing I enjoy most is connecting with kids of all ages, especially when I am able to help guide them through something difficult in a way that helps them to learn and grow,” said Becky Maffei.

suicide prevention and mental health and wellness presentations in middle and high school classes; through involvement in our district equity committee; supporting the threat assessment process; even responding to crisis situations in schools where temporary additional counseling support is needed,” she said. Bringing Smiles to Every Patient THE KIDS’ DENTIST GIG HARBOR OFFERS FUN, RELAXED ENVIRONMENT BY JILLIAN CHANDLER PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA ELISE TILLMAN

THE KIDS’ DENTIST GIG HARBOR 3316 56th Street NW Gig Harbor, Washington 98335 253.329.KIDS (5437) TheKidsDentistGigHarbor.com

“I am not here to make kids feel like they are on assembly line getting their teeth cleaned. I want them to look forward to seeing us like we look forward to seeing them. I like to hear how summer camp went or their basketball game. My goal is to create a dental home instead of a dental factory.”

A

t The Kids’ Dentist in Gig Harbor, patients and their parents will be treated to a warm, friendly, fun environment. Catering to children and teens, owner Dr. Brian Dansie and his staff provide cleanings, exams and any restorative treatment. They are trained in the treatment of children with special needs and strive to provide communication and education to make oral health both enjoyable and practical. The dentistry has sedation options available and works closely with local orthodontists to best treat orthodontic needs at the right time. Dr. Brian and his staff strive, each and every day, to make dental appointments something both children—and their parents—look forward to. As you walk into the office, you are sure to hear some giggles between Dr. Brian and his young patients as they exchange jokes and stories between one another. “I have pictured this office in my mind for years before it became a reality,” says Dr. Brian. “Every detail from the moment you walk in is to help alleviate fears and gain a relationship of trust with parents and their children. I look for staff that displays empathy and compassion and loves what they do. That is very important to me.” From the time he was young, Dr. Brian knew that he wanted to one day work in the

medical field. After his brother had him shadow his brother-in-law, Dr. Brian knew this was the field for him. “It combined my love of working with my hands and working with the public,” he says. “I loved the artistic side of dentistry as well as feeling a part of the community where I live.” While in dental school, his very first patient was an 8-year-old boy, who Dr. Brian recalls being nervous and honest—as was he! His patient overcame his nervousness, and he was so proud of himself that he gave Dr. Brian a big hug at the end of his appointment. “After that, I was hooked. Nothing else in dentistry was as rewarding to me as helping kids get through procedures and helping them overcome their anxiety,” Dr. Brian smiles. When it comes to the work he does, Dr. Brian says the most rewarding aspect is creating genuine friendships with the families he serves. “I am not here to make kids feel like they are on assembly line getting their teeth cleaned. I want them to look forward to seeing us like we look forward to seeing them. I like to hear how summer camp went or their basketball game. My goal is to create a dental home instead of a dental factory,” he says.

Dr. Brian and his family moved to Gig Harbor four years ago. “Growing up in Utah, trees were not as plentiful, and I wanted to be around water, trees and fresh air. Gig Harbor is hard to beat on all those fronts,” he says. “My kids love Gig Harbor. We love being out on the Sound and are very involved in sports, dance and art classes. Gig Harbor is a fantastic place to raise a family!” You can find Dr. Brian coaching youth sports here in Gig Harbor. In addition to his work on the field, he and his staff are involved in providing dental supplies for families in need around the Puget Sound and sponsor oral health baskets for community homeless programs both locally and in Renton. This September, Dr. Brian and his staff will celebrate the one-year anniversary of opening the doors of The Kids Dentist! There’s sure to be a party in store for kids and adults alike. “I owe a ton of gratitude to my wife and wonderful staff for a successful start to this amazing dental office.” Call 253.329.KIDS (5437) to schedule an appointment with Dr. Brian and his staff today. Your kids are sure to walk away smiling.

GIG HARBOR IN FOCUS PROTECTING THE SHENANDOAH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN AIMS TO PRESERVE HISTORY BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS BY JON SMITH, COURTESY OF HARBOR HISTORY MUSEUM

F

or decades, visitors and locals alike have been fascinated by what they find when entering the Harbor History Museum. Inside is a fully restored school house from the late 1890s alongside hundreds of artifacts that preserve the maritime history of the area. Roughly 1,500 Peninsula School District children visit the museum on field trips—a chance for them to see and experience what life was like when the first European settlers were coming to the area. Just about everyone’s favorite experience, however, is getting up close with the museum’s prized possession, the Shenandoah. According to Museum Executive Director

Stephanie Lile, the Shenandoah is one of only two Skansie-built seiners left in Gig Harbor; one of a handful still in existence; and the only Skansie-built fishing boat that is open to all. The fact that it was made from wood makes it even more rare and all the more delicate. Keeping the Shenandoah in pristine condition and restoring it to its original look is of paramount importance to the Harbor History Museum, and the restoration project is one of the focal points of its current capital campaign. Project 224606 is named after the Shenandoah’s vessel documentation number. The campaign came about after Lile and the museum’s development committee decided they needed

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

to have a more defined goal with regard to the vessel and take better care of the museum’s collection. “We realized, when looking at museums all around the world, that if you don’t have an enclosed space it will continue to rot and deteriorate,” said Lile. While the vessel now rests at the museum, it had a long life at sea, contributing to a lot of wear and tear. The 65-foot wooden purse seiner was built by Pasco Dorotich at the Skansie Shipyard for service as a cannery tender. Little did Dorotich know that the boat would wind up having three lives: one as a cannery tender,

one as a purse seiner and its last as a museum artifact destined to teach about the lives and livelihoods of those who built and skippered her. “It was built here in Gig Harbor, for Gig Harbor fishermen, and fished by two Gig Harbor families,” said Lile of the vessel’s importance to the area. During its time at sea it underwent many changes. The pilot house was rebuilt in 1948 and additional updates were made in the 1960s. This makes for a unique situation for volunteers who are working on the vessel on both sides.

“The Shenandoah will feature a full restoration on the starboard side and careful conservation on the port side. This approach will highlight various boat building and restoration techniques as well as allow for engaging interpretation of the commercial fishing industry and the stories of the men and women who have made it their livelihood,” said Lile.

fishing vessel. There will be characters in period clothing depicting jobs on board,” she said.

Once completed, the space will provide a truly one-of-a-kind learning opportunity for school groups and other visitors.

Volunteers have already put in thousands of hours on the restoration but, with the boat exposed to the elements, that work could be lost. Project 224606 aims to enclose the area around the Shenandoah and also the gallery itself, which is also open and exposed. “Right now it’s not very secure and you could actually be snowed on in the winter,” said Lile.

“Students will come on board and be able to be very interactive with life aboard the

Enclosing the gallery will not only provide more security for the artifacts but also keep

them away from exposure and provide a better experience for museum guests. Plans call for an additional 3,000 square feet of enclosed space which will allow the museum to bring out additional artifacts that are currently in storage. The added space will also provide more opportunities for events and educational and interactive exhibits. “For example, "below the waterline’ exhibits will offer a peek inside the hull to see how the Shenandoah was built, how the engine worked and where the crew lived. ‘At the waterline’ will allow visitors the opportunity to discover life aboard a salmon seiner, from work deck to galley to pilot house,” said Lile. A specially designed preservation workshop will allow museum staff and volunteers an area for restoration project where guests can also watch the process. The fundraising goal of project 224606 is to raise $2 million to complete both the enclosure and refurbish the Shenandoah. Lile is hoping to have all the funding by 2021 and be able to celebrate a fully restored Shenandoah on its 100th birthday in April of 2025. About $400,000 has been raised so far through individuals, corporate donations and sponsorships, and grants. The museum was recently given a $100,000 grant from the Washington Heritage Capital Project, and other monies have been promised once fundraising reaches certain levels.

“We are also looking for anyone who crewed on board the vessel so we can continue to expand the oral history of those who were on board,” she said.

The museum is also calling for volunteers in other areas. “There are 10,000 screws that need to be put into the boat,” said Lile. “We accept wood donations, milled lumber and any artifacts that might be connected to the Shenandoah.”

The Shenandoah is indeed a rare treasure and something that can keep the early history of the area alive so that future generations will remember those who first came to the area and the life they lived.

Staff continues to find new unique pieces as the restoration continues, and they were even given the original bronze name plaque by someone who by happenstance found it at a swap meet in California.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Those interested in making a donation or learning more about the projects can stop by the museum or visit HarborHistoryMuseum.org. You can donate as an individual, and corporate sponsorships are also available at various levels. If you would like to offer your skills in the restoration of the vessel, the museum is more than happy to meet with you.

“We have lived, breathed and eaten from Puget Sound waters. Completion of the Maritime Gallery—through its enclosure and creation of engaging exhibits and interpretive experiences—will provide intriguing lenses through which we can see our past, explore our present and imagine our future while, at the same time, fulfilling and improving upon the original vision for the space,” said Lile.

ailey Bass is entering her junior year at Peninsula High School and has already made her mark for the Peninsula High School golf team. She was first team all-league and was also named MVP for her high school team. And it is not just on the golf course where Kailey succeeds. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career thus far.

Kailey shares that her biggest challenge when it comes to golf is performing under the pressure of others’ expectations. “I’ve always been a people pleaser to an extent, so doing well in sports has always been one of my main priorities,” said Kailey, who has learned to set her own goals and be content when she reaches them no matter what others expect of her.

IN HER WORDS...

Although she will not graduate until spring of 2021, Kailey said she would like to attend a four-year university and play golf at the next level. She is interested in studying both aviation and architecture. “I’ve always been a numerical thinker, and being in advanced math has allowed me to embrace that!” said Kailey. “I have always loved design and modern engineering. I have been around airplanes my whole life, and I find it appealing to follow in my family’s footsteps of becoming a pilot.” Kailey said that golf has taught her to maintain composure when things aren’t going the way she wants them to. “Within chaos I know how to keep myself calm and optimistic! I’ve come to realize that the best way to maintain an inner peace is to give my worries to God, knowing that some things are out of my control, and that He has the best path for me.”

state champion for the state of Washington in the 3A shot put for the Gig Harbor High School track team, Samuel Peacock also is passionate about the game of football—a sport he will continue at the collegiate level after he graduates next spring. “I have received offers to play football at schools such as Oregon State, Portland State, Idaho, Columbia, Georgetown and Northern Colorado,” said Samuel, who was selected as First Team All SCC OL and has a cumulative GPA of 3.77. Samuel is interested in science and said two areas of study he is considering are biology and neuroscience. “After completing an undergraduate degree, I have thought to pursue physical therapy school,” he said. The biggest challenge Samuel has faced when it comes to sports is balancing his life between his desire to not only be the best athlete he can but the best person.

“I try my best to not become distracted from what is important in this world. I find something that I love, such as football and track, and I give everything I have into it. I stay focused and try to be the best,” shared Samuel. Samuel says football is a game for people who love the grind and who are willing to push themselves past the point of breaking. “You do it not only for yourself but for the guy who is next to you. You get hit and you must hit back. It's a sort of a battle when you enter the field; there is no other feeling like it,” he said of the game he loves. Samuel says Coach Ben has been especially influential in that he has taught him that it is not always about the win or the scholarship. “Sometimes success will be found in becoming something greater than yourself. Success is not always defined as a victory.”

t’s 1994, and Barbara Burrows, a military wife new to Gig Harbor, has placed an ad in the newspaper inviting residents to have coffee at her home. She wants to make friends and find out what there is to do in this small town on the western banks of Puget Sound. On the day of the gathering, dozens show up for the coffee. It’s such a success she had another event later that month. Now, 25 years later, Barbara’s neighborly spirit has grown into an established membership-based social organization with more than 750 Gig Harbor residents as members. New Neighbors of Gig Harbor is a nonprofit organization that aims to connect residents with other likeminded people in their community. From hiking and pickleball to game nights and dinner parties, there are more than 60 activity groups that meet regularly with the goal to help members build friendships.

NEW NEIGHBORS OF GIG HARBOR IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT AIMS TO CONNECT RESIDENTS WITH OTHER LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE IN THEIR COMMUNITY.

the couple visited again and saw six homes. Seven weeks later, in early 2016, they moved into their home on Peacock Hill. “We moved up here for the sheer beauty of it,” Shelley says. “We didn’t know anyone; I was trying to figure out what to do in this town.”

Membership—which comes at a $30 annual fee—is open to all adults who live in the Gig Harbor area and allows access to the organization’s offerings, as well as opportunities to join the board and help create new activity groups. Shelley Wilbert, the organization’s president, first heard about New Neighbors when she moved to Gig Harbor with her husband three-anda-half years ago. “I became involved the first week we were in town,” she says. “I saw a rack card with the month’s schedule and went on a walk, to a happy hour and a board meeting all in the first week. I was sold.” Like many of the other organization’s members, Shelley was not from the area and didn’t have family or friends nearby. She and her husband moved to Gig Harbor from California after falling in love with the area while on vacation. “We were trying to see all of the baseball stadiums in the U.S. and, while up here for a Mariners game, came across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in our rental car,” she recalls. “We saw this quaint, beautiful town of Gig Harbor.” That was in May of 2015. In December,

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Like Barbara, she found a community in New Neighbors. Drawn to the friendship and ever-expanding, diverse nature of the organization, she began attending board meetings and became president. Now she works with the organization’s three vice presidents to organize events such as twice-monthly happy hours, monthly business luncheons, and monthly coffees for prospective members; recruit new members; and create new activity groups. “It is mostly made up of 55- to 75-year-old newly retired empty nesters,” she says of the demographics of the New Neighbors membership, “but about one-quarter of our members still work, so we have evening and weekend events. We keep on evolving.” New activity groups are created when 10 or more people are interested in something and take their interest to the board. She said one of the newest groups is specifically for widowers to get together with others who have similar experiences. It’s not a therapy group, Shelley says, but a place for all of these people who have this shared experience to get together and have a community. The group joins New Neighbors’ existing groups which include 13 book clubs, a wine group, men’s group and Explore Washington group, just to name a few. Group offerings fluctuate depending on the time of year

with hiking, biking, pickleball and walking groups more active in the summertime. In the cooler, wetter months of fall and winter, the organization’s dinner party, board game and card groups rule the schedule. Barbara Henderson, the organization’s vice president of communications, got her start in New Neighbors with the Explore Washington group. She recently told the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce’s Profile magazine that, as a new resident, she most enjoyed going on local outings to learn about the area. Trips she went on included Seattle’s Pike Place Market and International District, the Port of Tacoma from the land and sea, and numerous local museums. “We’re an extremely welcoming group, and I have both seen and experienced friendships formed to last a lifetime,” Barbara told Profile. New Neighbors of Gig Harbor is always looking for new members to join its ranks of nearly 800. Membership is open to adults living in the 98335, 98332, 98333 or 98329 zip codes, and members do not need to be new to the area to join. Those interested in learning more and attending an informational coffee—a tradition kept from the founder’s original gathering—can email membership@ gigharbornewneighbors.com or join New Neighbors by visiting GigHarborNewNeighbors.com.

t’s one of the most important days in a couple’s life—the day they commit to love, honor and cherish each other for the rest of their days; the moment they unite themselves to become one. This meaningful day, complete with ceremony and reception, brings family and friends together from near and far to celebrate the happy couple and wish them well on their journey of marriage. What if you could have the wedding of your dreams … for free? Bliss Manor Farm is a breathtaking new venue in Gig Harbor. Sitting on 22 acres on the Key Peninsula, the property is home to a gorgeous Christmas tree farm and offers views of the Olympic Mountains and Rocky Bay. This October, Bliss Manor Farm will be participating in the Key Peninsula Farm Tour October 5 and 6. Owner Michelle Humphreys envisioned decorating the barn as if a wedding was going to take place so that people who came on the tour would be able to easily visualize the space as a beautiful location for a special occasion. “Since we were going to the trouble of paying for and setting up, I thought it would be wasteful for no wedding to actually happen!” recalls Michelle. “I brought up the idea

of a sort of a lottery—send in your story and photos and win a wedding! My husband, Bob, agreed that it was a great idea, so we decided to hold a wedding giveaway.” To enter to win is simple. Please note that additional fees will apply for reception services.

In addition to the large barn, with its heated floors and gorgeous paneled walls (which can accommodate up to 150 people), there is an expansive party deck/swing area. The deck can comfortably cater to 75 to 100 patrons and offers two gazebos and views of several ponds and exquisite landscaping. Michelle says they are in the process of constructing a 10foot metal gazebo adorned with floral decoration that will sit over one of the ponds, with amphitheatre seating for 75 guests. When it comes to what Michelle finds most rewarding about creating that unforgettable, one-of-a-kind experience for her clients, she says, “Both Bob and I spent our careers in an office, and we are thrilled to be able to enjoy what has been a life-long passion of ours—hosting and entertaining. Whether it be someone’s birthday or a bridal couple, we are truly honored to take part in someone’s special day.” For those interested in touring the facility, they can contact Michelle at 253.313.8522 or michelle@blissmanorfarm.com.

THE SOCIAL ASPECT OF YOUR OVERALL HEALTH

The Wellness Wheel By Scot Fleshman, ARNP, FNP-BC, Owner, Rainier Family Medicine

I

n last month’s article, we introduced the Wellness Wheel and how the different spokes of this wheel interact and support an individual. We also discussed in more detail about community health and how community involvement can have a positive impact on an individual’s health. Another aspect of wellness that is strongly tied to community is social health. Social wellness describes the interactions that we as individuals have with one another and the role this plays in our overall well-being.

individuals are the fabric that comprise a community, the stronger the bonds of the individuals, the stronger the community itself will be. Social health is important on a more intimate level, as social wellness refers to the interactions of a person and those around them. It can also refer to an individual’s ability to successfully manage and thrive in social settings. Whether the interactions be with family, friends, coworkers or neighbors, these interactions play a critical role in our general welfare. It is important that we develop strong bonds with those surrounding us. From these relationships, we derive much needed nourishment of the soul on a basic level. We also see improvement in ourselves from supporting others in a social capacity. Social wellness has a very reciprocal overall benefit to everyone involved.

As mentioned in the last article, the healthier the community, the healthier the individuals are within that community. Likewise, the higher level of social health that residents of a community have, the greater the health of that community will be. But what does it mean to be in good “social health”? In simplest terms, it means having a high level of interaction with those who surround us, developing relationships and supporting one another. As

Multiple studies have shown that alienation from others, or lack of social wellness, is directly correlated to a decline in mental health status. Having persons close to us whom we can depend on increases our overall health, especially our mental health. Keep in mind, quality is very important when considering this aspect of health. Being social with people who are uplifting and supportive is where one receives benefit. Having negative or strained social interactions can have an adverse effect on overall health. It is important to maintain relationships with individuals who promote healthy interactions, as well as harbor growth of skills for interpersonal relationships. Self-reflection is also important in determining what our social needs are. As children, we are exposed to social situations that are convenient, such as with our family members and schoolmates. However, this can be limiting, especially if our surroundings are more homogenous. We then lack experience with individuals from different backgrounds that might be beneficial to our expansion of social identity and confidence in our interactions with individuals from diverse groups. We may also realize that certain types of social interactions cause us a heightened sense of anxiety or are more difficult for us to navigate. These instances allow us opportunities to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses and allow us opportunities for growth in these areas.

The bottom line is there are overall health benefits from our interactions with others. A lack of social interactions can signify decreased social health and lead to a decline in other areas of our general health. Withdrawing from social interactions can be a sign of decreased mental health status, such as depression, anxiety and even suicidal ideation. Knowing that decreased social interactions can be a red flag for mental health issues allows our social group to offer us support, should the need arise. Likewise, decreased satisfaction in social interactions can negatively impact our physical health. Social avoidance can lead to decreased physical activity and reduce an individual’s likelihood of seeking health-care services. Let’s face it. The people we are closest with are likely the individuals who will say, “Hey, you seem off. Is everything OK?” They may recognize a decline in your mental or physical health before you do. It’s important that we maintain high-quality relationships with people who are good for our overall health and wellness; people who provide a strong support system. If you do find yourself uninterested in social interactions that you would normally enjoy, or if you find yourself pulling away from friends and family, consider speaking with a health-care provider.

IRLEN SYNDROME: Back to School Headaches - When Reading is a REAL Pain By Mariel C. Kraus, OTR/L, Certified Irlen Screener

I

f you have a child with an IEP, gets headaches or tired after reading, reports distorted pages or floating letters, you owe it to him/her to read this article. Chances are, your child is more capable than she or he performs due to symptoms of a visual perceptual processing disorder, referred to as Meares-Irlen Syndrome, Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, and Visual Stress. It is not an optical problem. It is a problem with the brain’s ability to process visual information. It can also present as sensitivity to sound. This problem tends to run in families and is not currently identified by other standardized educational or medical tests. Irlen Syndrome can affect many different areas, including: Academic and Work Performance • Poor reading comprehension, attention, skips words/lines, poor tracking, slow and more • Difficulty with math computation • Writing and spelling challenges • Difficulty reading music Behavior • Become frustrated, depressed, withdraw/isolate, disruptive and aggressive, low self-esteem, low motivation Attention/Concentration/Ability to Sit Still • Difficulty copying and taking notes while trying to pay attention to lecture • Tend to daydream • Bothered by glare, bright/fluorescent lights, sunlight, lights at night

Poor Depth Perception • Clumsiness, falls • Poor sports performance People who suffer with untreated Irlen Syndrome complain of: •Print looking different/distorted (floating letters, blurry, wavy, 3D) •Environment looks different •Eye strain, fatigue •Headaches, nausea •Anxiety, poor sleep

Often people can appear to have other conditions, such as attention deficit disorder, and are given unnecessary medication. Parents of children who are struggling in school, or who get great grades but are wiped out after school or doing homework, while other kids are in sports and play dates, should consult an Irlen screener or Irlen diagnostician before school starts so that their child can succeed and enjoy their childhood. Living with these symptoms is painful. Occupational therapists who are Irlen Certified are qualified to address how Irlen affects the whole person and may be able to bill insurance for sensory processing assessment and treatments. The Irlen website states that about 45 percent of the population with learning problems have Irlen Syndrome. The test is simple and well worth exploring. Your child’s childhood will go by quickly, so don’t let another day of suffering go by. Make the call today and be well on your way to wholeness! FOUR TYPES OF SOUND SENSITIVITY ARE YOU SOUND SENSITIVE? BY KAY FRALLIC, MA, AUDIOLOGIST | HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY

I

ndividuals with hearing loss sometimes have sensitivity to one of four types of sounds. This article will review the four types of sound and possible treatments for each. Hyperacusis: These individuals have a collapsed tolerance to normal environmental sound. The condition usually appears gradually. Patients with collapsed tolerance to sound need to have Loudness Discomfort Levels (LDLs) established by an audiologist. Levels of 85 to 90+ decibels are normal but with hyperacusis LDLs well below that level. The common treatment for hyperacusis is listening to broadband pink noise. There are two ways to deliver broadband pink noise to your ears. One way starts with a clinician trained to diagnose/explain hyperacusis, gently test LDL levels, fit custom sound (noise) generators and provide counseling. Treatment lasts six months and may cost $3,000 to $4,000 (not covered by insurance). Clinicians who administer this treatment were trained by Dr. Pawel Jastreboff (Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia) to be experts in treating hyperacusis and tinnitus patients with Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT). A list of TRT clinicians can be seen by visiting Tinnitus-PJJ.com/referral. html. The other method to deliver broadband pink noise is with their broadband pink noise CD. If you download the CD to an iPod, the pink noise should be maintained in the original WAV or AIFF format (not converted into MP3 or other compressed formats). It’s important to use open-air headphones.

Recruitment: A lot of hearing-impaired people have recruitment. Recruitment is a rapid growth of perceived loudness in the same pitches of hearing loss. Normal hair cells adjacent to damaged hair cells are "recruited,” causing perceived loudness to shoot up rapidly. At one level they cannot hear the sound, but when it reaches a certain loudness or pitch the person is blown away—it sounds far too loud. Recruitment is a common phenomenon in Western culture, where lives are saturated with too much noise. Common treatment is the same as for hyperacusis unless hearing

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

54

loss is profound and broadband pink noise cannot benefit. Hypersensitive Hearing (of specific pitches): Some individuals are sound sensitive to certain pitches heard at loud levels (above 70 dB). These pitches are labeled "problem" frequencies. Autistic children are good examples. They tolerate some sound at normal or even loud volume, but other pitches are intolerable. Autistic, marginally autistic children as well as non-autistic individuals who have hyperacute hearing are commonly treated with Auditory Integration Therapy (AIT). AIT takes regular music and filters out the problem frequencies. Somehow this therapy normalizes their tolerances. The music may peak up to 90 decibels. However, AIT is too loud and only worsens the condition of the hyperacusis patient. To learn more about the sensory problems associated with autism, visit Autism.org.uk/sensory. Misophonia / Phonophobia: Misophonia (dislike of sound) is an adverse response to sound regardless of volume level. Typically, these individuals react strongly to soft sounds and sometimes are further triggered by seeing the source of the offending sound. Common examples would include, but are not limited to, the sound of people eating, smacking their lips, sniffing, certain consonants like p, s or t, and repetitive sounds. There is no collapsed tolerance to sound with misophonia. Phonophobia, a subcategory of misophonia, involves fear of sound and develops with those who have a significant collapsed tolerance to sound. They not only fear the sound of the environment now—they also worry about sounds in the near future. This can interfere with sound therapy. Phonophobia may cause a person to isolate, a recipe for disaster because it is critical that we keep our ears active to rebuild our tolerance to sound. Broadband pink noise brings them back to the mainstream of life. Further resources can be found at Misophonia-uk.org. THE POWERFUL HAND AND THE BENEFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY PART I OF II By Darcie Miller, Light in Balance

ur hands are amazing. Have you ever thought about all of the things your hands do? How powerful they are?

We use our hands to help someone walk, cross a street, prepare meals, administer medications, change diapers, write a letter or note, bathe, garden and plant seeds, hold someone in a hug, caress a cheek, soothe and brush away tears, and in healing. How about play a musical instrument, repair a car, and build roadways and buildings. Your hand is a machine with endless possibilities. Some use their hands to speak and communicate. We are able to communicate through touch whether it is using your hands to type a letter or email, text or dial a phone. The power of the touch of someone’s hand on your hand, arm or shoulder can speak volumes. Your hand is made up of the wrist and palm and fingers. Each hand has 27 bones, 27 joints, 34 muscles, over 100 ligaments and tendons, and many blood vessels and nerves. There are more than 30 individual muscles in your hand and forearm that work together to help with the movements necessary to complete just about everything you do on a daily basis; it is an intricate structure whose muscles have evolved to meet the ever-changing movements needed for different tasks. Think about all of the different types of gloves available, which provide protection for our hands. We wear gloves to keep them warm,

protect them from sun exposure and to keep them clean. There are gloves for use with cleaning chemicals and protection from heat. There are gloves to protect your hands from sharp objects such as glass or thorns. You can find gloves for driving, golfing and quilting. There are countless lotions, salves, balms and ointments available to help protect and heal the skin on your hands. Just like your feet, your hands contain reflex points, which correspond to all your body’s systems and organs. Using a gentle thumb walking, the reflexologist is able to work all of your body’s systems through specific reflex points in your hands. Not only does it feel wonderful to have your hands held, a properly trained and certified reflexologist can help bring your body into a state of deep relaxation—which in turn can help your body begin to heal itself.

There are times when foot reflexology is not possible, either because a client has an injury, severe foot pain or infection, or they may not have feet. Reflexology can still be performed on their hands with the same results as foot reflexology. Take a look at your hands and the hands of your family members, and look for the tasks they have performed over the years—I think you’ll find fascinating stories in them. They may have even told you a story or two. Stay tuned for more information on hands and some of the many benefits hand reflexology can have.

or many families, choosing a community for a loved one can be an overwhelming process, with decisions often made on a tight timeline and without the experience to know what to look for and the right questions to ask. But it’s important to remember that community-based living can be a truly enriching time, and there are many resources to help you find an independent, assisted living or memory care community that’s the right fit. Here are some guidelines to consider. Does it feel comfortable? A comfortable environment goes a long way toward making a resident feel at home. Check that the temperature is comfortable, the community smells fresh, there’s a balance between shared and private spaces, and the atmosphere is engaging. Is the community personable?

See that they treat residents and fellow staff in a personable, compassionate manner. Are there plenty of activities? Great communities also facilitate recreation and relaxation. Does yours have a variety of daily activities scheduled? Consider looking for events beyond bingo such as paint and sip, ladies’ night out or a senior rodeo. Do the scheduled activities match what your loved one is interested in? Do they offer transportation to the bank, store or church? Do residents take part in any organized trips

or excursions? Also examine a community’s pet and visitor policies, and ask if they offer volunteer companions for residents with faraway families. Additionally, if you’re looking for a memory care community, is there a dedicated program tailored to the specific needs of those with cognitive impairments? Would you feel cared for? Most importantly, consider if this is a place where your loved one can stay safe and healthy. Look for handrails, elevators and wheelchair ramps throughout the community. Ask about medication delivery services and go over emergency medical procedures. Do you feel at ease? Take your time when you’re visiting the community. Try to visit during a mealtime so you can experience the food and interactions among residents. Make personal connections with residents and ask about their experiences in the community. Each family is unique and will have additional concerns—but asking a lot of questions and trusting your instincts will help steer you in the right direction and ensure that you’ve chosen the right assisted living community for you. EXFOLIANTS What, when and why you should use them

W

e all have our own idea of what it means to exfoliate. What does it mean to you? Is exfoliating a homemade sugar scrub you use on your body during a long bath? Is it cleansing your face with a Clarisonic Cleansing Brush? Or is it getting a chemical peel with your skin-care provider? All of these are examples of exfoliants. In fact, there are many types. Let’s talk about what they are, when to use them and why they are beneficial. What is an exfoliant?

By Kristin Carlson, Medical Esthetician

DUE TO OIL, SWEAT, MAKEUP AND LACK OF CLEANSING, THE DEAD SKIN CELLS CAN GET TRAPPED ON THE

Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. There are two main types of exfoliants: physical and chemical. Physical exfoliants require manual “scrubbing” or manipulation. Physical exfoliants include product with granules in them (like a body scrub), and devices such as a loofa, body brush, a sonic cleansing brush and even dermaplaning. Chemical exfoliants are enzymes, hydroxy acids and retinoids, which go on smooth and create a chemical reaction on the skin. Typical treatments falling in this category would be a chemical peel, an enzyme facial or an at-home skincare regimen including a retinol product. Chemical exfoliants are most commonly used on the face and décolleté, whereas physical exfoliants can be used on all areas of the body (be careful on the sensitive neck and undereye area).

SURFACE OF THE SKIN, CAUSING CLOGGED PORES AND DULL, FLAKEY-LOOKING SKIN.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

58

When to use an exfoliant? Our skin is in a constant state of regeneration; creating new skin cells and shedding the old ones. Due to oil, sweat, makeup and lack of cleansing, the dead skin cells can get trapped on the surface of the skin, causing clogged pores and dull, flakey-looking skin. Depending on your skin type, exfoliants should be used anywhere from daily to weekly. If you have oily skin, daily exfoliation is great. Exfoliating before bed creates a clean slate for sleep and allows products to penetrate deeper into the skin. If you have more sensitive or mature skin, exfoliate two to three times per week. Sensitive skin needs more time to rest and heal in between exfoliants, while more mature skin has a slower cell turnover rate, meaning there is less need to exfoliate daily. If you wake up with your skin looking a bit dull, a light exfoliation in the morning can really brighten up the skin and create a smooth canvas for your moisturizer, sunscreen and makeup. Why? Incorporating an exfoliant into your skincare routine has many benefits. In addition to unclogging the pores, deeper product penetration and a brighter complexion, longterm exfoliation can increase skin elasticity and promote the production of collagen— minimizing fine lines. If you are not sure where to start or what type is right for you, schedule a consultation with your skin-care provider. For brighter, tighter, healthier looking skin, add this easy step in to your routine.

LIVING YOUR

PURPOSE WITH PASSION realizing the power of your personal brand BY GENNY HEIKKA

I

had a conversation with a young woman a while ago who’d recently gotten married. She and I were talking about the new phase of life she was in, and I asked her what her biggest challenge was. She answered, “I guess I would have to say my own individualism, since I’m in a different phase of life and I’m newly married now. Sometimes I think about who I am and what I’m supposed to be doing ... I want to live passionately now, not just in the future.” We all have that longing to matter—to do something significant that we are passionate about. But how do you know what that “something” is? How do you find your purpose and live it out with passion? Some of you reading this might be in a place where you’re doing exactly what you know you’re supposed to be doing in this season of your life—and you’re excited about it. And some of you might feel so far from that, you don’t even know where to start. (If that’s you, it’s OK! You’re not alone.) And even if you are operating in your sweet spot, things change as life changes: relationships, jobs, health, finances. All these things can change over time. And especially during those times of change, questions like “What’s my purpose?” and “What am I passionate about?” seem to stare us in the face. The good news is, the answer to those questions doesn’t lie in having it all figured out, “finally arriving” or finding that one thing to do for the rest of your life. (After all, you can live out your purpose in different ways in different seasons of your life.) It actually has more to do with truly understanding who you are and then identifying ways to authentically live that out, right where you’re at. So how do you do that? The power is in your personal brand: the unique combination of all the things that make you you and the distinct value you bring to your job, the marketplace, your relationships and the world. We all know that companies have brands, and we know those brands are much more than just a logo or a tagline. A company’s brand is really about what that company is known for and the value or benefit they add in people’s lives through their products or services. It’s about how people see and experience that company. (For example, when I think of Amazon, I don’t think of their logo or tagline; I think about convenience and the way ordering online and getting products quickly makes my life so

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

much easier.) The same is true for your personal brand: What are you known for? What is the unique value you bring to the table that can impact and add value in the lives of others? How do others see and experience you? Considering these questions can be daunting, I know. (Often, when we think of branding and marketing, we think of self-promotion or spending money.) But the great news is, you don’t have to start from scratch or hire an expert to create your personal brand—because whether you realize it or not, you already have one. Right now, today, you are already seen and experienced by people in a certain way. You are already known for something. The question is, is your personal brand what you want it to be or are there ways you can strengthen it to have greater impact and find more clarity on your own purpose and direction in life? When you think about managing and maximizing your personal brand from this point forward, ask yourself what differentiates you. Are you known for what you want to be known for? Are you seen how you want to be seen? Think about who you uniquely are as a person, what makes you different from others and the impact you want to have. And give yourself permission to dream a little! Take time to explore more about what makes you you—things like your individual strengths, your core values, your personal and professional passions, and the experiences you’ve gone through that have equipped you and shaped you. To strengthen your personal brand and have the greatest positive impact, a process of self-discovery is really the starting point.

Sometimes I’ll get clients who come to me for coaching and want help figuring out their next move or their career direction. But before we ever start talking about vision, goals and actions, we start by walking through a phase of self-discovery. Because the things that are unique to you—and make you who you are— make up the foundation for your personal brand and inform not only your direction but how you can stand out in the noise of today’s world. When you truly know yourself, it clarifies your vision and how you show up and communicate in your life, every day. And even though there’s much more to the personal branding process than can be captured here in this article, here are a few key things you can do, starting now, to help you discover more about who you are and strengthen your own brand: Know your strengths. Know what you are naturally good at. Don’t guess; actually take the time to discover the things that come easy to you and that you excel at. There are plenty of assessments and resources that can help—some online and several books. And if you want to keep it really simple, just think about what you were good at as a child. What did you gravitate toward doing when you were little and what came easily to you? Often, those are the things that point you to your natural strengths. When I was a little girl, I loved getting up in front of my class and speaking. I was in every talent show I could be as a dancer, and I loved to entertain and encourage audiences. And when I look at what I find such a sense of purpose and passion in doing today—speaking and encouraging audiences at conferences and events—I see the connection to when I was little. Often, as we grow up and life happens, we forget the things that we are naturally gifted at. Knowing your strengths can give you clarity on your direction and point you toward what you’d likely find the greatest purpose in doing today.

We all have that longing to matter— to do something significant that we are passionate about. But how do you know what that “something” is?

Here’s what our families are saying! Many facilities of all kinds have staff that just don’t seem to be fully engaged in the care of the residents or enjoying their jobs. That is just the complete opposite of Olympic Alzheimer's Residence! The staff, the caregivers, the nurse, the chefs, the maintenance folks and everyone my husband and I have met are extraordinarily warm, caring, kind, and professional in all aspects. They go above and beyond in the care of the residents which provides us complete confidence and peace of mind that Mom is well taken care of. They are the best! Know your passions. What fires you up and fuels you? Is it hiking or business, cooking or traveling? Or maybe it’s fighting for a cause. Identifying your passions is easy for some, but for others it can be hard. And that’s OK. Start by giving yourself permission to try new things and don’t think you have to be passionate about what others are passionate about—really explore what sets your own heart on fire. When I became a mom, I thought I should be passionate about crafts so I volunteered to help with crafts in my kids’ classrooms all the time. It took me a few years to figure out that leading craft projects just wasn’t me. It was liberating to realize I didn’t have to volunteer to do that anymore, and there were other moms who not only loved crafts but were way better at it than I was! Doing the things that excite and interest you will cause you to feel energized, not drained. You’ll also likely make the greatest contribution and impact, because you’ll be doing something that you love and care about. Examine your experiences. You might’ve gone

through the same thing as someone else, but you didn’t experience it the same way because you are you. Think about the experiences in your life—the challenges you’ve faced, the successes you’ve had, the things that have helped to shape you. Your experiences— positive and negative—are a valuable part of your story, and they often uniquely equip you to make a significant difference in the lives of others. All of these things: your strengths, passions, experiences and more combine to make up your personal brand—who you are and the unique value you bring. And when you spend time discovering more about yourself and strengthening your brand, your purpose and passions become much clearer. But there’s one more important step to living your purpose with passion, and that’s doing it with others by your side. If you do all this work to dig into who you are and figure out your strengths and direction but live that

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

out in isolation, you’ll still miss out on being able to make the maximum impact. Look for opportunities to make a difference in the unique way only you can, and do it in community. Years ago, when I first started pursuing my dream of writing books, I was a closet writer. I felt like I needed to be published or have my writing perfected before I told anyone what I was doing. But then someone wiser than me said: “If you are writing, you are a writer. You don’t have to be published to call yourself one.” And that gave me courage to share what I was doing. I realized you don’t have to have it all figured out before you step out and pursue your dreams. And when I started calling myself a writer and doing that journey with others by my side, that’s when doors opened. Not only did doors open, I had a community around me when doors closed. And that was important. I got hundreds of rejection letters before I got my first book contract. But having other writers in my circle who were going through the same thing made all the

difference. I didn’t lose my passion when I hit the roadblocks. And that’s the power of community. Putting yourself out there in a new way makes you feel vulnerable (believe me, I know!), but it creates opportunities you would never see otherwise. I saw that in my journey as a writer. And I saw that when I started my coaching and consulting practice Her Team Success. One of the first things I did when I started my practice was share what I was doing for others, and that fueled my courage—and my business. So if there is something you’re longing to do or unknown territory you’ve been wanting to step into, do it. First take the time to understand more about who you are, then put one foot in front of the other and don’t worry so much about the outcome or if you are “ready.” Instead, recognize the unique value you bring to the table and the unique contribution you

your strengths, passions, experiences and more combine to make up your personal brand— who you are and the unique value you bring.

can make. And be sure to share what you are doing with others and surround yourself with community, because living out your purpose with passion is better (and way less terrifying) with friends by your side. EXPLORE

YOUR CREATIVE SIDE It can transform your life … and your home! BY PATTY HUTCHENS

Y

our friends invite you to a girls’ night out. You think it sounds great until you find out it’s a craft night! If you are like me, the natural instinct is to find an excuse and graciously back out. After all, who wants to be humiliated in front of all your friends? The truth is, one does not have to be “crafty” to create beautiful things. And who wants to miss out on the laughter and fun that goes along with it, not to mention the wine that often accompanies these events.

“I believe we all have some level of creativity in us; we just express it in various forms and to different degrees. When I'm teaching a painting class, I assure them from the very beginning that there's no skill needed as I lead them through the project every step of the way ... and more importantly, there is no ‘right or wrong’ way of doing my paintings,” said Alison of her paint and sip classes. “My favorite thing is when a client adds their own touches along the way or makes changes so the painting fits their style. The biggest thing I promote is putting aside inhibitions or preconceived notions, relaxing and just simply having fun!”

Alison Henslee founded The Creative Soul Collective, a place to foster creativity in a safe, intimate group setting. With classes in her home and other community venues, people come together to create with friends—and often leave with new friends as well.

Want to couple creativity with practicality? Now is the time of year I always am envious of all those people who are buying an abundance of produce at the local farmers markets to not only consume now but to can for use in the winter months. I have found that, although it may seem intimidating at first, preserving and canning food can actually be quite simple if you follow a few important steps.

Alison guides participants with detailed instructions and inspiration. And most importantly, she encourages each and every person along the way, leaving little or no room for selfdoubt.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

The friendships that are formed are as beautiful as the art that is created at these intimate workshops. *****

First, start with fresh, local and organic produce. The quality of the ingredients will make a huge difference when canning.

69

Whether you grow it in your own backyard or purchase it at the local farmers market, do your best to get the freshest ingredients available.

… that’s right. You don’t need any woodworking or carpentry skills, and you definitely don’t need a tile cutter to give your kitchen a whole new look! It’s both affordable and simple, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.

The second step in the process is to prepare the food. Wash, chop, cook and jar as soon as possible after picking so that the food is just as tasty on those cold winter days as when it was fresh picked. However, if you have crops from late fall or early winter, the cooler temperatures will allow the food to keep awhile longer—especially when placed in the cellar. And then when you are ready, start to can. Experts state that you don’t need a great deal of gadgets to can; the simpler the better. Before you begin, check out the many online references that will provide you with everything you need to know step by step. ***** What about those home-improvement projects you would love to hire out, but it’s just not in your budget? And if you think about doing them yourself, you would not even know where to begin. Fortunately, there are so many tutorials online you don’t have to look far! Whether it is giving your cabinets a makeover by freshly painting them, installing a new backsplash or converting that old antique dresser into a new kitchen island, the ideas are endless! Below are some ideas that may provide just the inspiration you need to get started! Create a new backsplash using faux shiplap that adheres to the wall. Yes

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Do you find you are lacking when it comes to space for a home office? Are there papers piling up on the kitchen counter or table without anywhere to store them? Try converting a closet into a home office. Simply unhinge the door, remove the hanging rods and install shelves (preferably a deep one that will serve as the desktop and two shallow ones to accommodate storage above). The only cost will be shelving and the hardware to install them. If you want to brighten up your kitchen, it isn’t as hard as you may think. You can brighten up your countertops with battery-powered LED undercabinet lighting that is attached with adhesive to the bottom of your upper cabinets. Bell & Howell makes mini-power pods that will light up any area without the requirement of plugins or wiring. They are powered by AAA batteries and can be used in many locations throughout your home. We all may not be crafty, and it may be intimidating at times to try something ourselves. But the truth is there are tutorials online, and many stores such as Home Depot and Lowes offer workshops on a variety of home-improvement projects so you can start your project with confidence. They also offer classes for kids! What are you waiting for? Explore the possibilities of how you can bring out your creative side.

Upcycling

Turn Old Into New

HOW YOU CAN BRING NEW LIFE TO OLD ITEMS BY JILLAN CHANDLER

A

ccording to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of upcycling is “to recycle (something) in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item : to create an object of greater value from (a discarded object of lesser value).” Today, many of us find ourselves discarding items once we are no longer interested in them, whether it be clothing that may no longer be the fashion or furniture that has been worn over the years or no longer fits with our evolving taste and style. But this does not mean they should simply be disposed of. Instead, why not create something new out of the old? Rather than tossing it, create!

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Now, all of us are not created equal when it comes to the do-it-yourself department, but there are many creative yet simple projects even a DIY beginner can tackle and be successful. When doing your spring cleaning—which can be done several times throughout the year—this may entail cleaning out the dresser drawers and closets and making piles of the “keep” and “not keep.” But, don’t be too quick to get rid of those items you no longer wear or your children have outgrown! Children grow fast, and it can be hard to depart from those adorable plaid shorts that he wore on his first birthday or that flowery Easter

dress with the beautiful embroidery—but these, along with the dozens of other items, are taking up valuable space. Of course you can always donate these items, but if you want to preserve the memories, a great way to transform these clothing items into something new and functional is to create a quilt—which will not only provide warmth on a cold day but will cover you with memories of years past. There are basic supplies you will need in addition to the material that the clothing will provide to get you started on your memory quilt. The list is simple. According to Suzy Williams of SuzyQuilts.com, you will need a basic sewing machine, thread (it's best to choose a color that will match the lightest fabric in the quilt), memory fabric, batting, cutting mat, ruler, rotary cutter, straight pins, iron and ironing board. You can find instructions on her website for a variety of patterns to create your perfect memory quilt that can be passed down for generations to come. Now let’s talk furniture. It’s been moved, scratched, chipped, and

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

you’re thinking it’s time to just let it go and find something new. Rather than tossing it to the curb, why not dedicate a little time—and love—into bringing some life back into it? Maybe it’s the kids’ dresser, with drawers that are no longer fully functional, or the stain has faded, it’s been scratched up and chipped by all the use and it’s just not that pretty anymore. Instead of giving up and getting rid of it, why not help the environment, and your wallet, by repurposing it? Whether your plan is to keep its use as a dresser or have it serve a new purpose in the home, there are dozens of ways to restore it to its former glory. If you’re looking to have it continue its original use as a dresser, some great ways to upgrade its appearance are as simple as primer, a fresh coat of paint—which is a great way to incorporate the color of the room or instead add a pop of color—and new hardware. Simple enough, right? If there are a lot of deep scratches and/or chips, you’ll want to begin by sanding the dresser first.

If you’re looking to get a little artsy, use a stencil to create and image or fun design. One doesn’t necessarily think “fabric” when upcycling a dresser (other than the fabric of the clothes within its drawers), but a unique way to really make your “new” dresser stand out is to decoupage fabric onto the front of the drawers. In layman’s terms, you decorate the surface by applying cutouts of fabric followed by several layers of lacquer or varnish. The finished product is truly one-of-a-kind—your friends and neighbors are guaranteed to ask you where you bought it! If you’re set on purchasing that new dresser but don’t want to let the old one go, new and improved uses for it are plentiful. By simply removing unnecessary drawers and framing and, again, sanding and adding a fresh coat of paint and new brackets, it can be transformed into anything: a hall table, a kitchen island, a home bar, a new vanity or storage unit for the bathroom, a desk, an entertainment center, or an arts and crafts or play table for the kids (while repurposing the unused drawers into storage stools). In addition, you can cut off the dresser’s legs to convert it into a piece that can be used as a living room chest or coffee table—if it is low enough to the ground. The next time you’re thinking about tossing it, think twice! With a bit of imagination and work, you could end up with a work of art that you will be proud of for years to come.

Canning THESE RECIPES WERE TAKEN FROM ALLRECIPE.COM

Canning now can bring you flavorful food in the cold months. While enjoying those fresh fruits and vegetables this summer, pick or purchase a little bit more to tantalize your taste buds during those winter months. Below are simple recipes for canning that even the beginner can master!

METHOD • Divide cucumber slices among canning jars. Add 1/2 teaspoon pickling spice and 1/2 teaspoon turmeric to each jar. • Stir vinegar, water, sugar and sea salt together in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook and stir until the sugar and salt dissolve; cook at a boil for 2 minutes. • Carefully fill jars with brine to within 1/2 inch of the rim, covering the cucumbers completely. Discard any leftover brine. • Place the lids on the jars. Refrigerate at least 24 hours before serving. Store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.

INGREDIENTS 7 cups tomatoes, diced, seeded, peeled and cored 6 green onions, sliced 2 jalapeno peppers, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup vinegar 2 tbsp. lime juice

4 drops hot pepper sauce 2 tbsp. minced cilantro 2 tsp. salt 4 Ball(R) or Kerr(R) Pint (16 oz.) jars with lids and bands*

Bring to a low boil and cook for about 20 minutes or until peaches become liquid (my family likes a few bits of peach left). • Pour peaches into a bowl, and then measure 6 cups back into the pan. Add sugar and bring to a boil over medium heat. Gradually stir in dry pectin and boil for 1 minute. • Remove from heat after 1 minute and transfer to sterilized jars. Process in hot water bath canner for 10 minutes. Let cool and place on shelf.

Hells Canyon and the Wild and Scenic Snake River History and natural beauty abound in the Lewis Clark Valley Story and Photos By Marguerite Cleveland

“O

beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain” can’t help but ring in your head as you traverse miles of the grain-rich farmland across country roads and state highways and over the rolling hills of the Palouse to reach the Lewis Clark Valley and the towns of Lewiston, Idaho, and Clarkston, Washington. At some points, depending on the time of year, all you can see in any direction are “amber waves of grain.” No matter which direction you travel from, there are no interstate highways that lead to your destination, which makes for a lovely scenic drive and a sense of discovery when you finally arrive. Both towns are nestled on the banks of the Snake River and serve as the gateway to Hells Canyon. Where to Stay The Quality Inn and Suites Conference Center overlooking the Snake River in Clarkston is the perfect base for your trip to the area. It is located within walking distance of the Lewis Clark Valley Visitor’s Center, a winery, a brewery, shops and restaurants. This recently remodeled hotel is pretty upscale for the price point and has one of the top restaurants in the town. Your stay comes with breakfast vouchers for the Quay restaurant and is a full, hot cooked-to-order meal with a variety of choices. It is a perfect start for a day on the river. The hotel also has a charming garden, patio and outdoor pool. Dave’s Golf Range is located directly behind the hotel if you want to brush up on your golfing skills.

NOT AS WELL-KNOWN AS THE GRAND CANYON, HELLS CANYON IS EQUALLY EPIC AND WITHOUT THE CROWDS.

Hells Canyon A highlight of any visit to this area is a jet boat tour of Hells Canyon. Not as well-known as the Grand Canyon, Hells Canyon is equally epic and without the crowds. It is North America’s deepest river gorge and traverses a remote region with harsh terrain. At one point, you are on the border of Idaho, Washington and Oregon. The canyon gets narrower as you go further in and is more than a mile deep below the Oregon west rim. Book a five-and-a-half hour Dug Bar trip with Snake Dancer Excursions. Departing at 10am, this exciting excursion will show you what the canyon has to offer as you explore 120 miles roundtrip. Snake Dancer Excursions operates under authority of a special use permit issued by the United States Forest Service, Wallowa Whitman National Forest and Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. All the boats are Coast Guard licensed and inspected each year, and the captains are CPR and First Aid certified. Captain Eric Elben is a wealth of information on the history of the canyon. The first stop was at Buffalo Eddy to view Native American petroglyphs— truly incredible to view these ancient works of art, and Elben allowed plenty of time for everyone to take photos. Canyon, he shares the history and lore of the area, including those of the Nez Perce Indians and stories of Chinese immigrants, miners and trappers. The lunch stop takes place at the Cache Creek Ranch within the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. This shaded oasis with sloping green lawns and picnic tables in a fruit orchard is the perfect spot for an oldfashioned picnic with cold fried chicken, baked beans, salads and yummy homemade cookies just like your grandmother would make. There are also exhibits which provide information on the canyon’s natural history as well as the history of the area. One question Elben always gets is, “When will we see the bighorn sheep?” His response is the sheep only work from 12 to 4 each day. Although joking around, it is actually pretty accurate as the bighorn sheep make their way down to the water in the afternoon when it gets hot to drink water. The sheep are plentiful, so it is highly likely you will see some on your trip. Other sightings include bear, river otters, bobcats and the occasional cougar or wolves, but these are rarer. Once it is time to head back, Elben recommends putting your cameras away as it is going to get wet. The return trip is at a faster pace with some turns designed to soak everyone. swim, and one favorite spot is a small waterfall flowing into the Snake River. This excursion should be on everyone’s bucket list. Hells Canyon is just breathtaking, and the jet boat trip is so unique. When planning your trip make sure to wear sunscreen. Temperatures can get over 100 degrees in the canyon in the summer. Near the Hotel Roosters Landing is a fun, laid-back place to eat. Its casual atmosphere is perfect after a day on the river. Dine inside or sit outside overlooking the Snake River. The extensive menu has something for everyone from seafood, steak and pasta to burgers, sandwiches and salads. The food is nothing fancy but very good with great service. They serve 18 microbrews, and 15 wines are available by the glass with local wines available. Across the parking lot is a quirky local shop, River Chicks Antiques and Knicks. This fun little shop is unlike most antique stores, with each little room organized around a theme.

downtown. A must stop is Newberry Square. This newly renovated space was brought back to life by twin sisters Vikky Ross and Nikky Hites. The two longtime preservationists have a passion for bringing things back to life that people think have used up their lifespan—whether it is furniture or historic buildings. The two repurposed an old five-and-dime store into a vibrant downtown shopping area with a wine tasting room, restaurant, bakery and vintage stores. Their store is the Idaho Memories Gift and Souvenir Shop which carries the gifts and local products tourists love.

A short walk from the hotel you can taste wines from the Lewis Clark Valley AVA at Basalt Winery in their cute tasting room. Next door is Riverport Brewery with a variety of local craft beer. Conveniently nestled between the two is Munchiez, which is a more permanent food truck, surrounded with a nice wooden deck. This place is very popular with locals and serves up some great food. Make sure to try anything with the tri-tip. Fresh cooked, you can order it in the super burrito Philly cheese steak, as a French dip, a tri-tip sandwich or atop nachos. It’s also sold as a meal with two sides and cheesy garlic bread or purchased by the pound.

Beautiful Downtown Lewiston is also the name of the nonprofit which promotes the town with events that encourage people to come back to Main Street. Each First Friday during the summer enjoy a live concert with local bands. Get some exercise on a 1.5-mile Public Art Walk, making time to visit the shops and restaurants. The Nez Perce County Historical Society and Museum has a historical campus to share 150 years of the county’s history. Just outside of town are Hells Gate State Park and the Lewis and Clark Discovery Center with interesting indoor and outdoor exhibits.

STEAMED ARTICHOKES WITH LEMON AIOLI + A SUMMER T O M AT O A N D C U C U M B E R S A L A D Recipe & Photo Courtesy of Marina Gunn @MarinaGunn | MarinaGunn.com Serves 2-3

INGREDIENTS: 2 artichokes 3 tbsp. mayonnaise (Vegan alternatives work as well!) 2 medium lemons 4 fresh tomatoes 2 cucumbers Fresh basil Kosher salt Pepper Olive oil METHOD: • In a large steaming pot, fill water and bring to a boil. • Wash and cut off the tops and bottom ¼-inch stem of the artichokes. Place in the steamer and cook until a fork easily pierces stem and leaves detach with ease, about 40 minutes. • In a small bowl, whisk together 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise and the juice of one medium lemon. Add salt and pepper to taste. It should be tangy and creamy, the perfect match for your savory artichoke. Set aside for dipping. • Slice the tomatoes and cucumbers to your size preference. Slicing in wedges is a beautiful way to present the summer produce. Place in a serving dish and toss with salt, pepper, lemon juice, fresh basil and top with good olive oil. • Serve artichokes and enjoy!

grassroots effort to fundraise. A getaway from the city. A safe place to bring your family. And a day offering a full spectrum of Americana music to keep you entertained all day long! The 2019 Olalla American Music Festival is set for August 17, and this year’s event promises once again to bring the community a fun-filled day of music, activities and more. “More and more folks from all over are discovering the quiet little community called Olalla,” says Marty Kellogg, festival manager. “The Olalla Americana Music Festival is a grand opportunity to see it for yourself.” The festival takes place in the middle of the Olalla Valley, dotted with old barns and acreage, with views of the hillsides donning a variety of trees and shrubs. The beautiful, rural setting offers kids’ activities, professional face painting, balloons and parade, community information, wonderful country food for both vegan and non-vegan, old-time craft demonstrations, local handmade art and crafts, a pie contest, band merchandise and festival T-shirts, and beer garden. Even better, there will be barbecue and pie all day long! Berry pies will be available for purchase at the event, with half of the proceeds going to benefit The Little

Children Program and Food Bank. The other half of sales benefits the Olalla Community Club to help with restoration projects and Olalla PTA projects. “Festivals are a great way for a community to express themselves,” affirms Marty. “We try to make ours an interesting one with lots of story, local art and a wonderful array of music with folk, country, bluegrass, blues and rock ‘n’ roll! From the youngest to the oldest, there are elements for families to do.” For those music lovers, the band lineup is sure to keep you hummin' all day long. With an array of talented artists performing throughout the day, the closing act will be Randy Oxford Reunion, whose performance will include a host of players he has enjoyed playing with over many years. “Everything about Olalla's festival has a feel or a sense of satisfaction,” says Marty. “We found an extremely comfortable way to enjoy a day and want to share it with you.” Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the gate; children 16 and younger are free. (Parking is $4 and camping is $10 a night.) You can purchase your tickets today at OlallaAmericana.com. Festival location is 5150 Hovgaard Road in Olalla. Gates open at 10am, and the music will be playing 11am to 9:30pm.
