“As a first-home buyer, I was so intimidated by the process, as you probably are if you are reading this. I’m here to tell you not to worry. Get in touch with Northwest Mortgage Services. Our loan officer, Abel Hernandez, was fantastic. He made sure my wife and I were informed every step of the way, and was very responsive to my calls and questions. I was seeking a VA Loan, so I had a few extra concerns on requirements and things to consider, but Abel and his team are extremely experienced in this aspect as well. The bottom line is they care about what they do, and who they are doing it for. The only thing I would have done differently is calling them sooner.” - James Santos

Cold-Weather Comfort
SIMPLE ITEMS TO TRANSFORM YOUR HOME INTO A COZY WINTER RETREAT By Jillian Chandler
TRANSFORM
Now is the time to focus on what’s inside, creating a warm winter oasis that leaves us—and our guests—wrapped in warmth and comfort.
O
ur home is our sanctuary, and that could not be truer than during the long, cold winter months we experience here in the Northwest. As the coolness of fall has settled in, with the official start to winter right around the corner, now is the time to focus on what’s inside, creating a warm winter oasis that leaves us—and our guests—wrapped in warmth and comfort. Whether you are on a budget or the sky’s the limit when it comes to your financial resources, you can create an inviting, warm and comfy space to beat the winter blues. All it really takes is a handful of items woven into your current home design style and décor. One of the first rooms most see when entering a home is the living room or family room. Here is where one will usually find a sofa, coffee and end tables, fireplace with mantel, and an entertainment setup with a TV cabinet, shelving, etc. This is the room that will most likely leave a

first impression and is also the room that gets a lot of use—especially during these colder months. Warming this room up with throw pillows to complement the season, such as neutral whites, off-whites and tans, each showcasing different materials (think furry, soft, fluffy, silky, ribbed, sequined, etc.) will automatically create a feeling of luxury and comfort, and you don’t have to break the bank! From inexpensive big box stores to those unique upscale local shops, throw pillows can be found anywhere you look. It’s up to you to decide the color and style to reflect what the winter season means to you while also choosing comfort. And … it’s easy to have both comfort and style showcased in your throw pillows. To accompany the pillows, a warm blanket or two will do just the trick. A throw over your favorite chair or the back of the couch not only adds to the look of the space with its color and texture, but creates warmth for the space—and for you when you feel a chill! A great and extremely popular choice—and a bit glamorous—for the cold season is a faux fur throw.
YOUR WORLD
We excel at listening and implementing each client’s wants and needs to successfully reach the finish line.
Other options include wool, fleece and Sherpa blankets. These are also great to keep on hand in other rooms throughout the house, such as at the bottom of the bed or laid across or folded on an ottoman. That brings us to carpeting. As more of us are opting for hardwood, tile or laminate flooring through our homes, which is great to help keep things cool in the summer months, it tends to be a bit cold on our feet once the harsher weather has arrived. But there’s a quick—and stylish—fix! Adding area rugs throughout your home, if you don’t have them already, is just the solution and adds warmth to our home. Not only are they a great accent piece, they can be changed out to go with the season. For winter, opt to choose a lush shag rug for your living room and bedrooms. And be sure it coordinates well with your décor and throws! You can also add runners throughout your home as well in entryways and hallways. With a set budget and some thoughtful planning, your home can be transformed into a cozy oasis you’ll enjoy all winter long.

PREPARING FOR THE
HOW TO LIVE YOUR OWN HALLMARK HOLIDAY MOVIE BY JENNIFER “TAZ” VAZQUEZ
Jennifer Vazquez
Life Coaching I help you discover what sets your soul on fire ... Rediscover your creativity, beauty and power! Let’s create how you want to show up in this world!
For some, the holidays are a time of excitement and magic: glad tidings in the air; enjoying the festive music and decorations; paying kindness forward for someone in need (or just because); looking forward to annual traditions; nostalgia thinking of past holidays; quality time with friends and family; and taking time to watch a favorite holiday movie! For others, the holidays are a time folks would like to fast forward through because they are: stressful; anxiety filled trying to find the perfect gifts or be the perfect host; full of challenging family dynamics or time missing family; filled with disappointment or resentment over unvoiced expectations; or sadness because of past reminders, such as the loss of a loved one, negative past experiences, or feeling lonely. So, let me ask you, if you could live your life like a Hallmark holiday movie, would you?

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
In 2019, the Hallmark Network produced 40 holiday movies—and over 85 million people watched them! What is their secret formula for capturing the magic of the holidays that keeps people watching year after year? Typically, it is because we can predict the plot and know it will be a happy ending. We also get to escape from the hustle and demands of everyday life to relax. Every movie has recurring themes, such as: an independent, successful main character moves to or visits a postcard-perfect small town; the lead character meets other interesting people; they learn to listen to their heart, follow where it leads, and discover their happy ending; and a storybook romance. Lastly, the movies capture the thoughts, feelings and beliefs in the magic of the holidays by tapping into positive emotions, perspectives and experiences. While the Hallmark holiday movies are fiction, there are lessons we can apply in our own lives. Here are six tips for living your life like a Hallmark holiday movie to find your own happy ending this season:
2. Honor old traditions and/or create new ones. It builds connection, comfort, meaning, and grounds us to our values/principles. 3. Practice gratitude, generosity and having fun. It makes us feel better and creates a ripple effect around us (and in our community). 4. Find enjoyable activities that you can do at little or no cost; and/or ask for donations to your favorite charities, in lieu of gifts. 5. Take a break when you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed. A short walk, stretch, exercise, meditation, or some deep breaths are powerful tools. They will help you relax, reset, refocus and reframe. 6. Finally, surround yourself with folks who support your intentions and boundaries. If you’re feeling sad, acknowledge your feelings and reach out for support from family, friends, spiritual advisor, coach or mental health specialist.

What thoughts and feelings come up when you think of the holiday season?
1. Set your intention for how you want to enjoy the holidays. This includes establishing your boundaries to maintain your health and wellness. Don’t lose sight of what really matters to you. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to practice saying no to people and places that drain your energy.

The Gift of Self-Compassion GIVING YOURSELF A BREAK DURING THE HOLIDAYS IF S E PA R AT E D O R D I V O R C E D
“I
By Felicia A. Soleil, Divorce Mediator/Attorney f your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.” - Buddha
December’s holidays mark the season of giving, when our generosity to those we love and those less fortunate is usually at its height. However, it often seems the question becomes, “How much can you do for others without giving thought to yourself?” It’s always a challenge to find balance during this festive season as you juggle the joys of holiday traditions with maintaining your health and well-being (basically, your sanity!) so you still have energy left to enjoy everything yourself. But what if you are recently separated or divorced? And what if your children are now in a two-home family instead of under one roof? How do you add these complicated layers to a time when things may already feel like “just too much”? These “complicated layers” may not only include the tasks of solely managing a household (tasks don’t disappear just because it’s December) and the added end-of-year goals with a job, but also the heightened emotions of grief, loss, and perhaps even guilt that can emerge at this time of year. Here are some strategies to help: 1. Forgive and let go. I’m primarily talking about forgiving yourself here. Decisions you made to separate and/or divorce had a valid basis for you at the time they were made. Don’t allow the sentimentality of the holidays to throw a guilt trip at you. 2. Don’t overcompensate. If you are new to single-parenting for the holiday, restrain your urge to overindulge your kids with presents and activities. One of the best strategies I heard in a recent mediation session between two newly divorcing co-parents was to allow their kids to “rest into the holiday” before transitioning between homes. For them, that meant no transitions on December 25 or 26.
3. Focus on what you can control. How your kids spend their first holiday time with the other parent is out of your control. Instead, ask yourself, “When my kids grow up, what do I want them to remember about their holiday time with me?” Create new memories so they can learn family transitions can be done well, in case it happens in their own adult relationships in the future. 4. Give yourself permission to say “No.” Whether that’s declining a request for more time-consuming holiday activities from children trying to play one parent off the other (they’re no fools!) or the wellmeaning friend who thinks you need one more alcohol-infused night out (because, hey, it’s the holidays!), learn to say “Yes” to a different kind of self-indulgence of quiet time and whatever helps restore your sanity. 5. Take time to rest. It goes without saying that eating right, some exercise and a good night’s sleep can do wonders for the emotional post-separation/divorce roller coaster you might be on during this time. Almost 30 years after my own divorce, I can still remember the comfort of my first set of flannel sheets my best friend gave me right before my first Christmas alone. Those sheets got me through countless December nights of soothing comfort, whether catching up on much-needed sleep, reading escapist novels, or watching mindless TV from my new “nest.” Find something simple to gift yourself that will add to your comfort. Be kind to yourself. The gift of self-compassion starts here. Felicia Soleil is a divorce mediator and family law attorney located in Gig Harbor. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential and currently conducted by appointment via videoconference or phone.
Building Better Solutions for Clients With almost 30 years experience serving families in Gig Harbor and Pierce County, Felicia Soleil provides more constructive alternatives to dissolving a marriage outside of a courtroom. In addition to her family law practice, she also provides mediation services, offering legal support, education and case management - from simple to complex - for separation and divorce, parenting plans, child support and prenuptial agreements.
Facing a divorce or separation? Felicia focuses on reducing and resolving conflict, helping you transition by moving on, not just moving out.

SOLUTIONS FOR A PARENT’S
TEACHER OF THE MONTH w al
By Colin Anderson

Know what your financial needs are. The first step is to determine your financial needs for each goal. Answering the following questions can help you get started. For retirement: • How many years until you retire? • Does your company offer an employersponsored retirement plan or a pension plan? Do you participate? If so, what's your balance? Can you estimate what your balance will be when you retire?
BUILDING SOLID FINANCIAL FOUNDATIONS We develop & review strategies, plans & solutions, as well as work to create a safe & caring environment where everyone can discuss their financial concerns, dreams & goals.
• How much do you expect to receive in Social Security benefits? (One way to get an estimate of your future Social Security benefits is to use the benefit calculators available on the Social Security Administration's website, SSA.gov. You can also sign up for a My Social Security account so that you can view your online Social Security statement. Your statement contains a detailed record of your earnings, as well as estimates of retirement, survivor and disability benefits.) • What standard of living do you hope to have in retirement? For example, do you want to travel extensively, or will you be happy to stay in one place and live more simply? • Do you or your spouse expect to work parttime in retirement? For college: • How many years until your child starts college?

• Will your child attend a public or private college? What's the expected cost? • Do you have more than one child whom you'll be saving for? • Does your child have any special academic, athletic or artistic skills that could lead to a scholarship? • Do you expect your child to qualify for financial aid?
Many on-line calculators are available to help you predict your retirement income needs and your child's college funding needs.
Retirement takes priority. Though college is certainly an important goal, you should probably focus on your retirement if you have limited funds. With generous corporate pensions mostly a thing of the past, the burden is primarily on you to fund your retirement. But if you wait until your child is in college to start saving, you'll miss out on years of potential tax-deferred growth and compounding of your money. Remember, your child can always attend college by taking out loans (or maybe even with scholarships), but there's no such thing as a retirement loan! ©Broadridge Advisor Solutions Nancy Harris is a Registered Representative and Investment Adviser Representative of Equity Services, Inc. Figure out what you can afford to put aside each month. After you know what your financial needs are, the next step is to determine what you can afford to put aside each month. To do so, you'll need to prepare a detailed family budget that lists all of your income and expenses. Keep in mind, though, that the amount you can afford may change from time to time as your circumstances change. Once you've come up with a dollar amount, you'll need to decide how to divvy up your funds.

fter proving to be a success in its inaugural year in 2020, the Gig Harbor Lighted Car Parade will once again bring magic and excitement to the community this holiday season.
The idea for a holiday car parade originated late last year when Kimber Lawrence was inspired by her friend, Stephanie Brooks, who was organizing a similar event in Home, Washington. “I gathered some of my friends (Robyn Denson, Melissa Oman and Paula Zenobio), and we threw the event together in four weeks,” Kimber smiles. “I am fortunate to be working with the same group again this year.” In conjunction with the car parade, it was important to Kimber to hold a food and toy drive to benefit the local FISH Food Bank, and this year they will be adding Food Backpacks 4 Kids. Kiwanis has offered their large enclosed trailer for the collection of food and toys, which the community can drop off anytime between noon and 8pm the day of the event at Uptown by the Pavilion, and the local Key Club will be volunteering to collect and pack items into the trailer. During last year’s event, which proved to be a huge success, 77 cars participated in the parade, with 3,755 food items and 464 toys collected for FISH Food Bank, and as Kimber says, “This year promises to be even bigger and better!” In addition to the fabulously festive vehicles, the Beast Bus will be returning this year, with Frosty the Snowman onboard. The Fire Department will have two trucks, one for each parade route, and Santa

will be riding along. The Grinch will be joining in the fun on his Harley, and there will be a full-size reindeer-drawn sleigh—which was built by Kimber’s husband and his friends, with Santa and Mrs. Claus riding shotgun. “I don't want anyone to think the reindeer will be real, but boy how I would like that to happen,” Kimber hints. This year, the parade, which takes place Saturday, December 18, from 4:30 to 6pm, will begin and end at the Multicare parking lot in Uptown, with both parade routes making their way through downtown this year. Judson Street and Harborview are the most popular locations for viewing, as they have ample parking and sidewalk space. At the end, the festive cars will be parked for everyone to get a closer look and snap photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. For those looking to participate in the parade, arrive at the Multicare parking lot at 4pm in your creatively decorated car, and you will get set up on your route. “If being in the parade is not your thing, then come and enjoy the live musicians walking around playing holiday music, come meet your favorite Disney princes and princesses, do some holiday shopping, dine at one of the awesome restaurants at Uptown and just take in the holiday atmosphere,” says Kimber. “And don’t forget to wear your best and brightest holiday sweater.” Those looking for additional details about this year's event, visit Facebook.com/GigHarborLightedCarParade. For those neighborhoods or businesses who would like to get involved in the food and toy drive, you can reach out to Kimber at kimber.lawrence67@gmail.com.

MAKE A WISH IN THE HARBOR SPUD MAKES A WISH By Rachel Kelly

O
liver Colglazier, a.k.a. “Spud,” made his wish with the Make A Wish Foundation last month here in Gig Harbor. To make that wish, he walked and he talked, and eventually drove, his way toward his goal—which is a miracle in itself. “They told us that he, most likely, would never talk or walk. The likelihood of him making it to 2 or 3 was very low. He must’ve heard them. Because every time someone says he won’t be able to do something, he does. And here he is at 18, walking and talking,” says Angelia Colglazier, Spud’s mother. That, in a nutshell, shows you just what kind of person Spud is: his own. Meet Spud: the 18-year-old Make A Wish recipient who is so much more than his wish. Spud is called Spud because, well, that’s who he is! It’s on his medical charts, it’s what his family calls him, and it’s how he’s known and loved. Spud thinks Sprite is gold and would camp every day of the week if he could. He loves to dress up for Halloween and can’t wait to decorate for Christmas. He loves his gnomes. He loves jazz, Dr. Seuss, Pixar and Disney. He will remind you that the “r” word is not a nice word, and that you should find another one. As his best
friend and caregiver will say, “If you think you’re right, Spud will tell you you’re dead wrong. And he’ll probably be right too.” And more than anything, Spud loves his family. When Spud was born, his prognosis was grim, and the family went through many years of speculation and respiratory infection. In 2016, Spud was still undiagnosed and suffered from a series of medical events. These events led to respiratory failure, where he was in a coma for nearly a month. His family nearly lost him. Thankfully, Spud eventually recovered. Yet he was still without a diagnosis. It wasn’t until 2018 that he was finally diagnosed by his neurologist, who would describe it as an “aha!” moment. As if a light bulb went off in his head, he knew. Spud has Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1). Myotonic Dystrophy is a rare genetic disease characterized by muscle weakness, stiffness, muscle loss and heart irregularities. Those diagnosed generally live a shortened life span. But, for Spud, he’s not about to let that stop him. He has goals. He wants to drive, for one. It was suggested to Spud’s family that they call the Make A Wish Foundation to see if something could be done about Spud’s goals.

As for Spud, what should we expect next? Well. He does have a cult following on his mom’s Facebook. Maybe there’s something in that, some future there. If nothing else, the #spudismoftheday is something to look forward to. A snarky comeback, a different way of looking at something, are all signs that Spud knows how he feels and thinks and is not afraid to express it. We could all use a little more comedic gold in our life, and a little more Spud. Full of wisdom, snark, laughter, and kindness the #spudismoftheday is the family's way of commemorating the everyday.
Since Spud just turned 18, he’s looking into a program that helps adults transition into independent living, so Spud may be out on the town soon. It goes without saying that he’ll definitely be driving that golf cart around, and that we may be seeing a lot more of Spud. As for exactly where he’ll go, and what he’ll do next, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Whatever Spud decides to do, it sounds like he does. Whenever others think that it can’t be done, he gets it done. I’m sure that the future holds for Spud what it holds for many of us: surprise and adventure.

Driving wasn’t his first wish though! His first wish involved travel. Which, in this pandemic, was next to impossible. So, Spud moved on to his next wish, which was to drive, though Angelia said that driving was definitely “a no.” Thus, a compromise was born. The Make A Wish Foundation bought Spud a golf cart, complete with accessories from his favorite Pixar character: Lightning McQueen. One of Spud’s nonnegotiable requests for the cart was that it had enough seats to carry his nieces and nephews, because that’s how important they are! The local police and fire department were called. It took zero persuasion for them to agree to come out to Spud’s house to see him off on his golf cart in style. Spud was escorted in true fanfare down his driveway while he drove the cart for the first time. After pictures and handshakes, fanfare and fun, Spud and his family settled in with pizza and Sprite surrounded by family and friends. It truly was a day to remember!

HOLIDAYS IN THE HARBOR CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS LOCALLY BY RACHEL KELLY
T
here are things to do, places to see and memories to make this holiday season, right here in Gig Harbor. Our community may be small, but it’s full of holiday enchantment. From parades to small business events, from lights to hot chocolate, here is your one-stop summary of all that’s going on in our community this holiday season. The holiday season officially kicks off with local shopping and community cheer in Gig Harbor with the annual Tree Lighting. Held on December 5 at Skansie Brothers Park, the mayor will be present with his special guest: Santa! Acapella entertainment will be available, but not hot chocolate due to COVID restrictions. However, bringing your own hot beverage is encouraged! For information, please see VisitGigHarborWA.com and search under events. Then there’s the holiday shopping! And there are few better places to

“shop local” than in Gig Harbor, with its exceptional art galleries, gift stores and artisans. On December 3, from 6 to 9pm, the annual Shop and Sip will be held at the Paper Luxe for a truly relaxing shopping experience. More information can be found on UptownGigHarbor.com. In addition, the Gig Harbor waterfront stores will be open for extended evening hours on Thursdays in December to allow for a more lengthy and enjoyable shopping experience. This way all of them can be visited at once at your leisure. For more information on businesses that are participating this year, please see GigHarborWaterfront.org. For another local shopping experience that brings artists and artisans from throughout the Northwest, visit TideFest. This yearly fine arts and crafts festival will be held at Gig Harbor High School on December 4 and 5 starting at 11am both days. Over 100 artists gather to sell their glass art, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, clothing, painting, wood products and
leather goods here. Admission is only $5. For more information, please see TideFest.org. While local shopping can provide for a one-of-a-kind gift while supporting our local economy, the holidays encompass a lot more than just gifts. The holiday season is also a time for introspection, tradition and for gathering with friends and family for celebration. Local churches and temples hold their holiday candlelight services, and menorah lightings for a quiet time of remembrance. Some churches hold holiday bazaars and meals for more festive gatherings. The holidays are also a time to check up on our neighbors, and to provide for occasions where someone may be less fortunate. As a result, there’s usually a lot of opportunities for giving. This season is no exception. There are more than a couple of family events that double as ways to give back.
One such giving event, the Lighted Car Parade, will be held at the Home Goods Parking Lot. The Lighted Car Parade collects proceeds for the FISH food bank and Food Backpacks for Kids. Not only is the parade fun to participate in, it’s also fun to watch! It’s a win-win! Paraders wishing to join the parade can decorate their cars and meet across from Fondi’s at 4pm. Those wishing simply to attend can watch along the route. For more information, you can find the event on Facebook at Facebook.com/ GigHarborLightedCarParade. Speaking of parades, there’s more than one place to enjoy lights this year. Shows like the Lighted Boat Parade come around every year and are truly unique to our community. This year’s Lighted Boat Parade will be held on December 11 at 5pm. Sponsored by the Gig Harbor Yacht Club, the parade will feature lighted kayaks, pleasure boats, fishing vessels and boats for a two-time run around the harbor. Whatever floats! There are also plenty of free experiences to be had in the harbor. A walk down the waterfront is always a wonderful experience when it’s all decorated for the season. And of course, there’s plenty of photo ops to be had. There’s watching the sunset on the beach, and dancing on the dock. A harbor holiday event is simply one where those you love the most are by your side, which makes free events easy to come by. This holiday season is sure to be special, not just because of special community events, but because the holidays highlight just how invaluable our local community is.

The club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor Midday, and its focus is to raise student awareness about service not only to their community but around the world. Here they learn leadership skills, make connections with local businesses and community members, and create projects that improve the high school and the community at large. Michael says both Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Swanson have made a great impact on him as a student. He will continue to keep up his fitness and academics so he can one day realize his dream of becoming a firefighter. Why? “To help people in need—because I love helping everyone,” he stated.

eninsula High School’s Allison Kimball is likely to continue her athletic career once she’s moved on from the high school ranks. Still only a junior, Allison has not only starred for her varsity team but has been recognized as an All-American twice. Where she will play Division I is still up in the air, but her hard work has definitely paid off. Allison also knows that being part of a team is much more than a win or loss, which is why she uses the skills she’s learned to work with others in the community who might not get the opportunities she has. “Outside of the school I am involved with community service, mainly helping students with disabilities. My brother has autism, so I have been able to work with many students with disabilities during Unified Basketball and Tim Tebow's A Night to Shine Dance,” she said. Allison’s parents also own a local detailing

At school, her favorite subjects are English, history and human body systems. “I love English and history because I enjoy writing and expressing myself on paper. Unique rescue offers second chance for abused animals

ruelty toward animals is an unfortunate presence in communities large and small and all across the nation. Much is made in saving and adopting dogs and cats from inhumane or abusive conditions, but these aren’t the only animals made to suffer. Farm animals like fowl and pigs also suffer mistreatment, sometimes when they are born with a defect, abused, or even put out for sport. Kate Tsyrklevich grew up around multiple rescue dogs and was appalled by images of animal abuse and neglect she witnessed at a young age. She would eventually pursue a career as a veterinary assistant, and while doing research after receiving her master’s degree, she began to

Porter would be the inspiration needed for Kate to establish Heartwood Haven, a unique animal rescue and rehabilitation site focused on pigs, roosters, hens, ducks and other farm animals in need of care and a safe space. According to Kate, Porter’s story is not unique. When a cockfighting ring is busted up, the overwhelming majority of survivors are either sent to auction or euthanized. Heartwood Haven works with

law enforcement and animal control to bring in as many abused farm animals as possible, but the demand for their services far outweighs what they are able to offer. “There are thousands and thousands more farm animals killed each year than dogs and cats. Almost daily we’ll have to turn down requests and keep our focus on cruelty cases,” said Kate. Heartwood Haven sits on 2.5 acres of land not far from bustling downtown Gig Harbor. It is a no-kill rescue for animals that have suffered cruelty, abuse and neglect. Many animals come to the rescue with defects or wounds from previous abuse. Both staff and volunteers work hard to rehabilitate these animals so they might lead a more peaceful life. There are currently 75 animals at Heartwood Haven, the majority being pigs and fowl, along with a few cats and dogs. The property is completely fenced in and contains coops and suitable living conditions for each of its residents. 46

In the nearly five years since they began accepting animals, Heartwood Haven has rescued more than 1,000 abused animals and found permanent adoption homes for more than 800 of those rescued. Adoptions are done more strictly than with cats and dogs, as these animals are seen by officials as food animals. Adoptees have to provide proof of a secure barn, coop and/or fencing, but many are happy to provide a safe place for an animal that had previously suffered. For those animals that are unable to be adopted, Heartwood Haven will be the place in which they live out their days, well cared for and without fear of further abuse. “When we see animals that have experienced trauma, they are terrified of humans. As we rehabilitate them, give them proper nutrition, they learn that they are safe, and to see that change and reaction is very special,” said Kate.

“IN OUR WORLD, THERE IS SO MUCH SADNESS AND NEGATIVITY, SOMETIMES YOU QUESTION HUMANITY, BUT WHEN PEOPLE COME IN HERE AND HAVE A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE WITH THE ANIMALS, IT MAKES US WANT TO DOUBLE DOWN ON WHAT WE ARE DOING AND KEEP GOING.”
Another big portion of Heartwood Haven’s mission is to educate the public on this under-reported topic. The rescue gives tours throughout the spring and summer, and does the occasional tour in fall and winter as well. Here, guests not only see the grounds and learn about the animals and what brought them there but also touch and pet those that are willing. “In our world, there is so much sadness and negativity, sometimes you question humanity, but when people come in here and have a positive experience with the animals, it makes us want to double down on what we are doing and keep going.” As the animals gain comfort with their surroundings, their unique personalities begin to come out. A current favorite is Ruby, a large pig that resembles a bear. Born with a challenging defect, Ruby was barely able to walk when she came to the rescue. One of her favorite pastimes is floating in a pond alongside the ducks, which always gets a laugh 48

out of visitors. Through rehabilitation, Ruby is now walking again, and Kate is keeping people up to date on her progress through weekly Facebook posts. Heartwood Haven hopes to expand to 10 and eventually 30 acres of property in order to accommodate the immense need. It operates mostly on donations and a few grants, and they welcome gifts large and small. There are also volunteer shifts available daily from 8 to 11am. These include anything from doing dishes and feeding, to cleanup and maintenance, and simply spending time and giving attention to the animals. RELAX Don’t let the holidays stress you out! By Missi Balison
W
hile the holidays are an amazing and magical time of year, it can also bring with it a load of expectations. There’s time pressure, gift-giving pressure, social pressure and, for some, the pressure to make it through the holidays with a smile.
Because we live in a colder/darker climate, add this: There’s also less sunshine, which can put a real damper on your mood if you’re one of the many people who experience Seasonal Affective Disorder. Plus, some of us feel pressure to make the holidays absolutely perfect for our loved ones, and to recapture the magic we remember from our childhood. Wow. That’s a lot, right?
A few years ago, Healthline surveyed people about their feelings during the holidays, and 62 percent said they felt “very” or “somewhat” stressed during their holidays. Only 10 percent reported no stress. Ten percent! Researchers found that people reported they were more likely to “behave in sedentary ways like watching TV, sleeping, eating and drinking to manage their stress. Many individuals engage in comfort eating and other unhealthy behaviors to cope with their stress levels.” Well, I’ve got some other ideas to help turn your mood around—try not to take them as added pressure but as ways to blow off some steam (or avoid the steam altogether)!

As December is a month filled with celebration, it is also the time to start reflecting on what habits you want to improve on come the new year. Throughout the month, note those bad habits you want to overcome, and whenever an opportunity arises where you can choose healthy over impulse, do it! Slow progression is the best way to achieve long-lasting results, and once January 1 arrives, you will already be on your way to a happy, healthier you!

Plus, getting your heart rate up helps your body release feel-good hormones that’ll boost your mood.
Distract yourself! Watch a comedy, work out, play a game, or even tackle an unrelated household chore (hello, organized sock drawer).
Get outside. Take a quick walk outside and enjoy nature—or your neighbor’s decorations. There’s nothing like a change of scenery and fresh air to shift your perspective. If it’s a little cold, then bundle up and get out, even if just for a short time. Stay away from social media. If there ever was a time to cut back on your scrolling time, it’s now! When you’re feeling stressed, it’s easy to compare your situation with that of others. Remember: We all know this, but in the scroll it is easy to forget that social media is where people generally show their “perfect” life, not their “real” life. Give someone a compliment. One of my favorite things to do when I go to the post office or grocery store is to give a total stranger a sincere compliment. I especially love complimenting seniors, because this can be a

An important note: There’s a difference between stress and feeling true anxiety and depression. If you’re feeling truly distressed, be sure to check in with your doctor. There’s no need to handle all of that by yourself.

he end of each year marks a time for immense excitement—and stress—as the season of holiday celebrations makes its finale. This time of year is as important as any to ensure you have the skills to be safe—and the ability to help keep others safe—as you are gathered with larger groups of friends and family, and most likely will find yourself traveling/driving in inclement weather. Now is the perfect time to refresh yourself with a CPR and/or first aid training class. In an emergency situation affecting one’s breathing, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a lifesaving technique that greatly increases one’s chance for survival, as it helps to maintain some blood flow to the brain and heart, buying time until paramedics arrive and intervene. For those needing to refresh their memory regarding CPR, when to perform it and the correct way, the American Red Cross lays out the steps to take before and while performing CPR. Before Giving CPR: 1. Check the scene and the person. You will first want to make sure the scene is safe, then tap the person on the shoulder and shout, "Are you okay?" to ensure that the person needs help. 2. Call 911 for assistance. If it's evident that the person needs help, call (or ask a bystander to call) 911, then send someone to get an AED. (If an AED is unavailable, or there is no bystander to access it, stay with the victim, call 911, and begin administering assistance.) 3. Open the airway. With the person lying on his or her back, tilt the head back slightly to lift the chin. 4. Check for breathing. Listen carefully, for no more than 10 seconds, for sounds of breathing.
(Occasional gasping sounds do not equate to breathing.) If there is no breathing, begin CPR. Red Cross CPR Steps: 1. Push hard, push fast. Place your hands, one on top of the other, in the middle of the chest. Use your body weight to help you administer compressions that are at least 2 inches deep and delivered at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute.
Note: If the chest does not rise with the initial rescue breath, re-tilt the head before delivering the second breath. If the chest doesn't rise with the second breath, the person may be choking. After each subsequent set of 30 chest compressions, and before attempting breaths, look for an object and, if seen, remove it. 3. Continue CPR steps. Keep performing cycles of chest compressions and breathing until the person exhibits signs of life, such as breathing, an AED becomes available, or EMS or a trained medical responder arrives on scene. Note: End the cycles if the scene becomes unsafe or you cannot continue performing CPR due to exhaustion.

HEALTHY HOLIDAYS
DIET AND AGING
TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY THROUGH CHRISTMAS AND BEYOND
WHY SUGAR IS YOUR WORST ENEMY
By Jennifer Miller
By Bri Williams, RN, BSN
T
he holiday season is upon us, and while it is truly a magical time of year, full of yummy food, gettogethers and my favorite music (don’t try to convince me otherwise), it can be tough for many. Whether you’re trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle or wanting to get a jump start on the new year, the holidays don’t have to send your personal Polar Express off the rails. Below are my favorite tips and tricks for not ending up on the naughty list this year! Manage Stress High stress levels can influence your sleep schedule, how much you eat and drink, and other health factors like blood pressure. It’s no secret that the holidays can be stressful, but it can be managed. Don’t overcommit. It’s tempting to want to be at every celebration you’re invited to, but remember, it’s okay to say no. Set the boundaries early, either with yourself or your family, commit to a certain number of celebrations or events, and hold that line. Take time for yourself and what brings you peace—like watching your favorite Christmas movie! Stay Hydrated Eggnog, mulled wine and seasonal beer, oh my! During the holidays, most of us consume more alcohol than normal. But don’t forget your water! Between each of your favorite seasonal beverages, drink at least 8 ounces of water. Your body will thank you in the morning.
Eat Mindfully Before heading out to a Christmas party, eat a little something first. Arriving at a party on an empty stomach leads to overeating. Make yourself a protein shake at home before you go. At the party, eat slowly and savor your favorite holiday foods. That special eggnog coffee cake your mom makes won’t make another appearance until next year, so enjoy it! Eat your Veggies First When loading up your plate at the holiday buffet table, make your veggie portion bigger than the rest. I like to eat my vegetables first, since they are usually the first to cool down, and no one wants to eat lukewarm green beans, right? Also, this will help fill you up so you’re not as likely to overeat. Commit to your Movement Commit to getting your 30 minutes of exercise daily. With kids home from school and busier days, it can be difficult but the perfect time to get creative. Suit up in your rain gear and go jump and splash in the puddles! Or bundle up in your snow gear and spend a day on the slopes at an area ski mountain or sledding hill. You can’t get to the top of the hill without walking up it first. Most importantly, do not forget to enjoy yourself. The holidays come around once a year and are meant to be enjoyed with your family and friends. Don’t be so strict with your “rules” that you forget to just be in the moment and delight in the season. Now, please pass the eggnog!
W
ith obesity rates near 80 percent in America, and the rate of metabolic disease, heart disease, dementia and diabetes climbing annually, there are a lot of reasons to choose a healthy, whole-food diet. But did you know that high sugar and processed diets also contribute to premature aging of the skin, leading to more wrinkles, sagginess, lost volume and poor texture? A process called glycation is to blame, and below we break down all the details and how you can stop premature aging, inside and out. What is glycation? Glycation is a process that happens on a cellular level in the body when sugar molecules attach to either protein or fat molecules. One of the protein molecules that they attach to is collagen, the primary structural protein in the extracellular matrix of the body’s connective tissue, and together they produce harmful free radicals called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The more AGEs that accumulate from the sugar consumption, the more collagen proteins are damaged. Therefore, an excess of sugar in the body breaks down collagen and elastin more rapidly than the natural aging process, resulting in premature aging. Can glycation be reversed? Unfortunately, glycation cannot be reversed, and it is best to prevent it in the first place. However, if years of high sugar consumption have left you with loose skin and wrinkles, you can make some dietary changes to prevent further damage. Swap out sugary treats for nature’s dessert of fresh berries, and be sure to consume enough water (roughly half your
body weight in ounces) daily. Water is essential for collagen and elastin production, and proper hydration can improve your body’s ability to counteract the negative effects of glycation. Additionally, a diet rich in antioxidants can help to combat free radicals that break down collagen. Broccoli, spinach, sweet potatoes and asparagus are just a few foods that help to brighten the complexion and halt glycation. What other foods cause glycation? While sugar is the biggest culprit for producing AGEs, other foods can also trigger glycation and premature aging. Meat, especially red meat, fried foods, vegetable oils and processed foods also contribute to the breakdown of collagen. Steer clear of these offenders and opt for lean white meats, fresh produce and whole foods to preserve your health and skin. A diet that helps you to age gracefully on the outside will also help to preserve your internal health. Your skin is your largest organ and reflects the cellular processes occurring internally. Nurturing your skin and body with whole foods and avoiding processed and sugary foods will improve your appearance, but more importantly, will make you healthier!
DID YOU KNOW THAT HIGH SUGAR AND PROCESSED DIETS ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO PREMATURE AGING OF THE SKIN?

DECORATING FOR
THE HOLIDAYS ANCIENT TRADITIONS BRING HOLIDAY CHEER
BY RACHEL KELLY
T
he simple beauty of Christmas décor is steeped in ancient tradition, as well as providing frivolous beauty. Here in the Northwest, our holiday cheer and decorations hold special significance because of our long and dark winters. Though they’re not as cold as some, the days are certainly short. A little snow goes a long way toward brightening up the landscape, but in the meantime, a few evergreen boughs, candles and Christmas lights bring cheer during the (seemingly) everlasting winter. It’s thought that bringing evergreen boughs into the home originated as long ago as ancient times, even dating back to the Vikings. Before there was electricity, and food was made in a hearth, the everlasting green of the branches served as a symbol of hope that spring would come again; that the sun would shine again in the mornings and evenings; and that the trees would once again fill with songbirds. It goes without saying that decorating the home, and decorating with neighbors, was an excuse to connect with nature and friends during a time when the weather kept everyone indoors. Today that tradition lives on in our long ropes of evergreen, tinsel, and in our rich Christmas colors. The modern Christmas tree, versus evergreen boughs, came much later. In the late 1500s in Germany, it was a common tradition to decorate bare trees with nuts and fruit. The ornamentation filled up the empty space left by the absent leaves and was a fun source of entertainment. However, it wasn’t until 1605 that a fir tree was brought inside and decorated with paper flowers and treats. The idea spread

across Germany for obvious reasons and flourished for a couple hundred years. In the 1800s, German immigrants brought the tradition with them, where it became popular in the United States. Decorations expanded to include whatever the decorator had on hand: popcorn, cranberries, streamers … and often weren’t too extremely extravagant. Lights were a common theme when decorating the tree and the home. Long before electric lights came along, trees were decorated with candles adorned with foil, which was used to reflect the light around the room. The family would nightly re-ornament and light the worn-down candles to bring a bit of cheer to the early evening. It wasn’t until the 1800s that ornamentation on the tree became more extravagant. During that time, Hans Greiner in Germany began making glass “baubles,” which were sculpted glass balls of various colors. The simple glass ornaments reflected the light and added a certain flair to the humble Christmas tree. While popcorn necklaces and cranberries were still used, the ornament certainly upped the decorating game. In the late 19th century, F.W. Woolworth brought the idea to America, and it quickly caught on. The ornaments were available in department stores across the country. Eventually the ornaments were injected with molten glass to make new shapes. At some point ornaments began to be made with moldable plastic to allow for an even greater variety of shapes and variations, resembling the ornaments that we have today.

Still more of our Christmas décor originates with Christian and Jewish traditions. The lighting of the menorah is meant to be a testament of God’s provision, symbolizing the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days instead of one. The menorah is not traditionally used as a practical light, such as something to read or write by. It is only ornamental and is placed in Jewish windows to stand as a reminder of God’s blessing to the temple and his people. The Christmas star on the top of the Christmas tree is a symbol of the star that led the three wisemen to Jesus after he was born, an event that Messianic Jews also celebrate in their homes. The very popular candy cane was originally created as a clever treat that was used to bribe children to sit during Christmas services. The simple “J” shape was chosen because it was the shape of a shepherd’s crook. It was a perfect accompaniment to the story of Jesus’ birth, whose first witnesses were shepherds. Originally the candy was made without stripes or peppermint flavoring, simply being sugar sticks. It wasn’t until later that the red stripes and peppermint flavoring were added with the intention of the red being the color of hope and peppermint symbolizing cleansing.

This year, there are all sorts of places to go and memories to be had in our community. We honor the age-old tradition of decoration and celebration by venturing out to be with our neighbors, and coming together to celebrate. There are a lot of special places to find just what seems right in our homes, and on our trees. There are some businesses where “baubles” can be made with family and friends, and some places where they can be bought. Whatever you plan on doing, there are some great places to look for things that serve as reminders of some of our favorite local memories. This season, may your home be a place where all your hopes, cheer and joy find residence. As we enter into long nights, and occasional rough storms, may your home be a place of respite. May it be a place of lights, baubles, candles, warmth, comfort, hope and greenery. And when you go out to shop, or just to be with friends, may it be an activity that brings you joy rather than stress. This year is a year of new and old traditions, and of faith in the coming year.
MAY IT BE AN ACTIVITY THAT BRINGS YOU JOY.

HOW TO
holiday happily T H E BEST WAYS TO STAY ORGANIZED AND STICK TO A BUDGET by TAYLOR SHILLAM
W
ondering how to keep the holidays happy without breaking the bank? While it can be easy to overdo holiday shopping, it’s just as easy to implement a few quick tips for staying organized and preventing excess spending. This season, you can keep both a joyful heart and a balanced budget!
Don’t let your love for the holidays be dimmed by pressure to spend. Here are a few ways to maintain a happy holiday without breaking the bank. Know your holiday expenses. The list of holiday expenses can be long, reaching far beyond shopping for gifts. Depending on your plans for the festive season, expenses can include decorations, food and drink for parties and gatherings, travel costs, and much more. While you plan your budget, outline every anticipated expense and determine where you can afford to save or skimp in each category. 68
|
GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
If you’re set to host holiday gatherings this year, consider where you can reuse decorations and get crafty. Save on dining expenses by suggesting a potluck or keeping your menu light with a happy hour or dessert-based menu. Take time to consider where you can stretch your dollar and enlist the help of guests. Keep your budget simple and realistic. The more clear and simple it is, the easier it will be to stick to—this statement holds true for many habits, and creating holiday budgets is no exception. Keeping your spending expectations clear and concise will make it easier to meet them. This may look like setting a specific spending limit per person on your shopping list or per holiday expense category, using categories like gifts, travel, food and so on. Staying organized from the start with parameters that are easy to meet helps ensure you don't stray from your budgetary goals.
Learn from years past. Don’t let ghosts of holiday shopping seasons past scare you into repeating the same patterns this year. Before finalizing your 2021 budget, look back at your spending and gifting habits over previous holiday seasons. If you made choices that sent you into an expensive last-minute spending spree or brought on debt you’re still paying off, make the necessary changes to avoid repeating the situation. Think back to the responses you received. Were all the gifts enjoyed and appreciated? What smaller or least expensive gifts made the biggest impact, and can you replicate a similar idea this year? What about last year’s spending could be condensed or changed? Asking yourself these questions to decide if last year’s spending was overdone or appropriate can help you create the best budgetary approach to this holiday season.

Little Luxe Baby Find adorable baby clothes, accessories, toys, books, and gear at Gig Harbor’s newest baby boutique, Little Luxe. Streamline your shopping list. Santa may be responsible for delivering a long list of gifts, but you don’t have to be. If your giving spirit is outweighing your budget this year, consider a few ways to shorten your shopping list. Suggesting a Secret Santa or White Elephant gift exchange among your friend group or at a gathering of extended family members is a great way to engage your loved ones without having the need to shop for every single one. Often, the memory of the shared gifting experience will matter more than the gift itself. Use your planned budgetary limits to create a list of what you plan to give each person on your list, then stick to it! You can organize this down to the specific store or site you’ll shop from to streamline not only your spending but your total shopping time. Track your spending. Documenting your spending will be key to staying on track this season! Thanks to mobile banking and free financefocused apps, tracking your expenses is easier than ever. Download your specific bank or credit card’s app and set up your account as you begin your holiday shopping. Keep your credit monitoring turned on to detect and eliminate any potential fraud right away. Assess your travel expenses. Traveling for the holidays? Take time to determine the most budget-friendly ways to get to your destination. If your trip is drivable, consider the advantages of road-tripping over flying. You could not only save on the airline costs that tend to skyrocket 70 70

during peak holiday times, but additional expenses like rental cars, checking bags and dinners out. If you are flying to your destination, take the time budget for the associated expenses and do your pre-travel research to cut costs where you can. Shop smart. As much as you can, shop smart, and shop early! Keep an eye out for the inevitable sales and deals that lead up to the holiday itself. If you’re shopping online, put your orders in before the shipping deadlines so you aren’t scrambling in nearby stores at the last minute. The more you can get done ahead of time, the more time you have to relax and enjoy the season. Consider spending time over money. Think back to the holidays you most clearly remember. Was it the gifts or the time spent that meant the most? Sometimes, giving shared experiences can not only save you money on buying trendy gifts, but can surprise you with a more memorable outcome. Gift-able experiences include tickets to an event, admission to a class to learn a new skill, the means to try a new outdoor activity, and much more. Tailor the experience to what matters most to the recipient, and your gift will be sure to make a lasting impact this holiday season.

This season, the joy of giving can stay joyful—with a little less stress and a little more in your pocket—simply by implementing a few budget-friendly habits. The key is to stay organized, plan ahead, and remain focused on what matters most. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

NEW BUSINESS? KEY P OINTS OF ADVICE F OR STARTING A NEW B U S I N E SS by RACHEL KELLY
A
lot of things have happened over the past few years that have people re-imagining their priorities: where they want to go in life, what they want to do, and what they want to have time for. As the new year is fast approaching, you may find yourself brainstorming a new business idea. Here are some key points of advice for all you entrepreneurs out there as you consider starting the new year out fresh. The first thing to do when starting a new business is to develop a business plan. This can often take some time—and some brainstorming. Do you want to sell online? Have a storefront? How do you advertise? Who are you looking to sell to? Are you even selling anything? A lot of times the answers to these questions can be found by who you know. And if you don’t know anyone, now is the time to find your niche of like-minded people. Knowing other business owners in similar spheres can help to find clients, create new work, develop what you have to offer, and facilitate advertising. There are online groups, local business fairs, clubs, events and galas meant to facilitate bringing people together. Use these things to meet people, connect, and allow for organic relationships. The people who meet as a new business owner are the people who will hold you up if you make a mistake, and advise you if you’re not sure which direction to go.

Mentors in similar spheres of influence will help you flesh out your business plan and give you advice as you venture out into providing concrete documentation. It’s really quite easy to apply for a business license through the state, and relatively inexpensive. But! Before applying for that legal paperwork, you must decide on a name, one that you won’t be able to change once you apply for your license. It’s also a good idea to run this idea through a group of your peers to see if the name is catchy, simple, showcases what you do, and communicates what you’re trying to say. A name can go through many drafts before it’s just right. Once you have that down, you can go ahead and apply for your business license. The next step in this day and age is to establish an online presence. If your business is online, this may mean establishing your revenue sources through the people that you have already connected with. Or this may mean that you start a web page and open up various social media accounts. Regular posts mean more attention to what you do and allows for further networking. A website gives people somewhere to go to learn more. You can even make a QR code for free online and attach it to your website. This makes access to your website that much easier. Regardless of what you’re doing, having an online presence makes you taggable and pingable. This makes your business more accessible. Once your ideas have been developed, and you have all the necessary paperwork, it’s time to put yourself out there. While you may not have much business quite yet, it’s important to be confident in your ability to deliver. This means that you know what you want and what you offer. You have to be willing to share this with people and follow through with what you say, learning along the way as to how to be more and more efficient. Ultimately, this is where you gain valuable experience that gives birth to concrete ideas and growth. Experience will allow you further confidence as to what you’re capable of and will spur creativity toward new deliverables. It allows you to gauge what people want or what they may need, and how you want to go about providing it. It’s a boots-to-theground sort of approach, that allows you to be a good

boss to yourself and a good manager to your employees. You will know what to do because your experience means you’ve been there. Once you have that foundation of peer connection, legal contracts and tried experience, you have the makings of a lasting business. From here you can only go up. You can hire more employees, buy more space, consolidate work and simplify production. Whatever it is you need for growth, now is when you go about acquiring it. Or maybe you like where you are, and you would like to continue in that vein. So you can. That’s the beauty of starting your own business—its time on your terms. You can shape your business after what it is that you want and need, versus readjusting your schedule and family around the needs of your boss. Whatever you decide to do here is up to you. Because, after all, it’s your business.

After holiday expenses of meals, travel and gifts, the checking account is often slim, and the credit card balances slightly inflated. During this annual spending splurge, we can often lose sight of the budgets we’ve worked hard to maintain throughout the rest of the year. After the dust has settled, it’s a good time to take a look at your financials, see if there are expenses you can eliminate, and set your spending, saving and payment goals for a new year.
Welcome home to Harbor home Place! Welcome Welcome home toFrom Harbor Place! morning to night, to Harbor Place!
Outline expenses. Knowing precisely how much you spend each month is a key to both establishing financial goals and finding ways to save money. Consider creating a simple excel spreadsheet with all of your monthly expenses. You can divide them into necessities (mortgage, rent, utilities, insurance, car payment, child care, etc.) and fluctuating expenses (groceries, entertainment, fuel/vehicle maintenance, dining out, extracurricular expenses). Add up the totals from each column, combine them with your after-tax monthly income, and see what you should have remaining each month. From here you can make adjustments to monthly budgets to suit your financial goals.

Analyze monthly auto-pays. It might cost $8 per month for a streaming service, $15 a month for satellite radio and $30 a month for in-home personal fitness subscriptions. On their own, each expense doesn’t seem like very much, but when they’re all added up, monthly auto-pays can turn into a rather large number. Do you really need five streaming services? Can you downgrade any meal-delivery memberships? Does the gym membership even get used? Take a look at each of your monthly services and decide which ones you will continue to use and those you can live without. If you eliminate just $60 each month in services, you’ll put $720 back in your pocket by the end of the year.

Consider a financial planner. Setting goals on your own is important, but professional financial planners can help you prioritize what’s important now, in a few years, and on into retirement. Is it better to pay down $40,000 in remaining student loan debt? Or is that large monthly payment better off being invested long term? If you have a retirement age in mind, professional planners can analyze your current savings and, based on your age, determine how much you should be committing each month in order to hit your goal. Many can also help answer both business and personal tax situations or refer you to a tax professional that might save you thousands.
Create a will. We don’t like to think about our end of life, but it will eventually happen to all of us. It is never too early to create a will –even if you don’t feel you have many assets or nothing bad will happen to you. Families squabbling over cash, properties, heirlooms and other possessions after a loved one’s death tarnish their memory. Having a clear and concise will allows the estate holder to pass on their assets how they best see fit. If a life event changes things, or you acquire a new asset, your will can be altered relatively easily, again as you see fit.
Check your 401(k). Most working Americans rely upon a 401(k) for their retirement savings. Your contribution likely comes out of your monthly paycheck and into an account you rarely monitor. Take a moment to see what your current savings status is. First and foremost, if your employer offers a match to your contributions, take the maximum available to you. This is the closest thing to free money you’ll ever find. If you increase the pre-tax amount you are contributing, you might actually save money down the line by paying less in taxes and having your funds go to work in the market instead. Finally, what stage of life are you in? If you are early in your career, perhaps consider a more risky portfolio. If you are on the verge of retirement, perhaps it’s best to move into lower-return but lower-risk investments.
Set your goals. Visualizing your entire financial well-being is the first step to setting your 2022 financial goals big or small. If you want to pay down that last $2,000 in credit card debt, perhaps skip a meal out a week and instead put that $50 toward the principal. A college savings account for your 5-year-old can start with just $50 per month contributions that will grow greatly over the next 15 years. Put $100 a month away in your sock drawer or safe place, and you’ll have $500 to $600 in spending cash for that summer vacation. Analyze your monthly expenses, find your available savings, and apply those funds toward your goals.

SUNNY PALM SPRINGS IS THE PERFECT DESTINATION FOR A WINTER GETAWAY.
SUNNY PALM SPRINGS
The perfect place to chase away winter blues By Marguerite Cleveland
S
unny Palm Springs is the perfect destination for a winter getaway. Luxury destination resorts abound with exotic pools and renowned golf courses. Art and architecture aficionados will love the mid-century modern aesthetic and vibe. This is foodie heaven, with the agricultural bounty of the Coachella Valley inspiring local chefs. Activities abound, or you can just relax by a pool. It really is the perfect destination for a winter getaway. Where to Stay There are so many beautiful resorts in the area that it can be tough to decide where to stay. These two Marriott properties are very family friendly, and both recently completed extensive multimillion dollar renovations and upgrades.
The holidays are a special time at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa. What makes the resort so unique is it has 18 acres of lakes and waterways. Electric boats pick you up in the lobby for rides throughout the resort. Look for special Boat Rides with Santa. Winterland meets the desert in over-the-top decorations sure to get you in the holiday spirit. The JW takes family friendly to a whole new level with the incredible JW Entertainment Zone featuring an arcade game room with supersized classic games like Pac-Man. You’ll also find skee-ball, duck bowling and virtual reality games, as well as seasonal activities.
The Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa celebrates the 10 Days of Esmeralda from December 23 to January 2, 2022. There are special activities each day for couples, friends and families. Christmas Brunch with Santa on December 25 is a highlight. Gingerbread house decorating, family fun train rides in the lobby terrace, and cookie decorating at Camp Esmeralda are just a few of the many activities planned. Adults will enjoy a paint hour, caricature artist and a New Year’s Eve Dinner Buffet. When booking, look for the 10 Days of Esmeralda Package, which includes festive extras the whole family will love.
The newly designed resort rooms have a calming aesthetic with hardwood floors and soothing shades of blue, grey and crisp white for the décor. Plush bedding, quartz vanities and rain-style showers add to the opulence. In addition to golf, there are so many other activities to participate in such as tennis, volleyball, bike rentals, a variety of lawn games, a putting green and multiple pools.
Indian Wells is a beautiful location for this stunning resort. The refreshed rooms are some of the largest in the Palm Springs area with midcentury modern design and vivid colors common in the Southern California landscape. The 23-acre grounds include lush Mediterraneaninspired gardens, waterfalls and lakes. The pool has a beach entry, literally with a sandy beach flowing to the walk-in pool.
Where to Eat
Pro Tip: When you arrive, make sure to pick up a copy of the Passport Family Activities, which lists family activities held each day at the resort.
Maybe the question should be where not to eat, because there are just so many options! Wilma & Frieda is located in the El Paseo shopping district known as the greater Palm Springs area’s Rodeo Drive. Serving up comfort foods with a twist, you will find jazzed-up dishes from your childhood with a grown-up flare. Where the restaurant really shines is with brunch. Start with a house-made Poptart—which in no way resembles the cardboard-textured ones of your childhood. Flaky pie pastry stuffed with a triple berry filling then drizzled with icing is a wonder to behold. Bennies, the restaurant’s take on Eggs Benedict, steps up the game with house-made English muffins and other fresh, local ingredients. Well worth the stop and super popular, so you will want to arrive early to snag a table. For a splurge meal, head over to the La Quinta Resort and Club to dine at Morgan’s in the Desert, the resort’s signature dining venue. The restaurant is beautiful inside with the feel of a hacienda, and outside in the courtyard, the twinkling lights help to create a magical atmosphere. Dine on contemporary American cuisine sourced from the bounty of the Coachella Valley. Traditional cooking methods highlight the region’s best ingredients

The La Quinta Resort is lovely at night. After dinner, head over to one of the other venues to enjoy a cocktail and live music in the Plaza. Located on North Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, a trendy street in the Uptown Design District with shops, galleries and sidewalk cafés, Eight4Nine Restaurant & Lounge is one that stays busy. The food is fantastic, but the presentation adds so much to the experience. Try the signature Watermelon Gazpacho, a chilled watermelon soup with piquillo peppers, lime, garlic, burrata cheese and micro mint. Poured tableside and so good. Another highlight is the Brandini Toffee S’Mores Fondue. This is such a delicious dessert. Skewer a house-made marshmallow garnished with locally made Brandini Toffee and lightly torched, dip in the decadent chocolate, then roll in crushed graham crackers. So memorable with the light fluffy texture of the marshmallows. What to Do Shields Date Garden is a kitschy ‘50s-style tourist stop which charms with its vintage vibe. Stroll the date garden to see the vignettes on the life of Christ. In the Romance Theater, watch the original movie, “The Romance & Sex Life of the Date,” quite a racy title when it originated in 1953. There is a cute café in a courtyard overlooking the garden, or you can grab a Date Shake at the soda counter. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is a must stop while in the area. Take the rotating tram as it follows the cliffs of Chino Canyon to the Mountain Station with an elevation of 8,515 feet. Head outside to enjoy the stunning 86

Your Satisfaction is Our Priority views and explore the pristine wilderness found in Mt. San Jacinto State Park, which offers more than 50 miles of hiking trails. Inside are two restaurants, a natural history museum, two theaters and a gift shop. Note the temperature is much cooler than the desert below, so bring a jacket or sweater for your visit. Even adults will love going to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens; one of only two zoos in the United States that specializes in deserts. The newly opened Rhino Savanna is the closest you will get to experiencing an African safari without leaving the United States. In addition to the animals, explore the immersive botanical gardens which flow throughout the zoo. Just gorgeous. The zoo owns 5 miles of private hiking trails into the desert for use by visitors. Make sure to stop by the San Andreas Fault line exhibit. The greater Palm Springs area has so much to see and do—but don’t underestimate the relaxation factor of nestling into a poolside cabana and sipping a craft cocktail far away from the winter blues.

A Community Centerpiece
t was 1912 when the first known community tree lighting ceremony was held in New York at Madison Square Park by a group that called itself the Tree of Light to inspire a renewed sense of community, which many felt had been lost during the Industrial Revolution. It was 19 years later, at the height of the Great Depression, when the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree was first erected—which has become a national symbol as the kickoff to the Christmas season—televised for all to see.

Community tree lighting ceremonies have become a popular tradition in many towns and cities, both big and small. And right here in Gig Harbor, the annual tradition has been going strong for decades. You can embrace the spirit of the season with our Gig Harbor community on Sunday, December 5. From 5:30 to 7pm, enjoy live acapella entertainment, an appearance by the mayor and special guest Santa Claus, who will be on site to count down to the official lighting. TOP TEN THINGS TO DO
94
|
Explore by Water
Have a Ball
Whether by sail, powerboat, kayak, SUP or electric boat, much of the city’s charm and natural wonders are best seen from the water.
Entertainment options abound, from Galaxy’s IMAX theaters or arcade games, duckpin bowling and a laser tag venue at Ocean5 to creative art classes with AR Workshop.
Support Local
Make Friends
Gig Harbor’s independent boutiques, artists and specialty shops dot the harbor—visits to the Westside and Uptown business districts are a fun excursion as well.
Events and live music are a cornerstone of the harbor’s year-round calendar. From live music in the park to family movies, fall fun runs and cultural fundraisers, there’s always a gathering to suit any interest.
Tip a Glass
Take a Look Back
Brewery, winery, distillery—take your pick. Many favorites were born here in the harbor, and tastings are a great way to preview local libations. Drop in for a cocktail at Heritage Distillery, or try a local brew from favorites 7 Seas Brewing or Wet Coast.
Gig Harbor has a rich maritime history, showcased through gems like the Harbor History Museum or guided tours on the harbor’s Prohibition days.
Share a Plate
Tee Up
Inventive eateries vary from casual grab-and-go spots to fine dining and top-rated seafood shacks.
Hit the greens at several courses, including Madrona Links, the Canterwood Golf & Country Club or the Gig Harbor Golf Club.
Walk on the Wild Side
Capture the Moment
Grab a set of wheels and glide on the Cushman Trail, which winds through the harbor and connects to the Narrows Bridge. Nearby Sehmel Homestead Park offers hiking trails, play areas and gardens to explore.
In one of America’s most picturesque towns, photography options abound—choose from an array of backdrops: a lighthouse framed by Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound, sailboats dotting the harbor, or a beach set against the Narrows Bridge.

SPARKLE IN THE HARBOR
Welcome the holidays with new furniture & decor!
HARBOR LIGHTED BOAT PARADE RETURNS DECEMBER 11 BY JILLIAN CHANDLER
S
ponsored by the Gig Harbor Yacht Club, the annual Lighted Boat Parade will brighten up the harbor on Saturday, December 11. A tradition that has been in existence for as long as current members remember—but certainly since the 1960s—the parade shines a light along the harbor to the enjoyment of both those participating and those on shore. “It was started simply to put on a show during the dark nights of December and brighten up the holiday season,” shares John Sasser, committee chair for the Gig Harbor Lighted Boat Parade. “At first it was just Gig Harbor Yacht Club boats, but then others asked to join and they were welcomed.” The parade begins at 5pm, as a long line of brightly decorated boats— including fishing vessels, pleasure boats and kayaks—parade around Gig Harbor, with the route starting in front of Arabella’s Landing, led by the Gig Harbor Police boat. “We proceed toward the harbor mouth but turn before we get there and go all the way down the north side of the harbor, turning again more or less in front of Anthony’s Restaurant,
and coming back along the south shore to our starting point—and then we do a second lap,” shares John. The boats can be viewed from all points along the shore. Last year’s event drew a record 52 participating boats. “Most years we've had 25 to 35 boats, but last year, in the height of the pandemic, I think a lot of people were eager to get outside and enjoy some safe entertainment. We had over 50 boats in the parade, and they put on an amazing show,” smiles John. “I think that might stand as a record for a while.” All area boaters are very welcome to sail in the parade if they have a well-lighted boat and a sense of adventure, whether or not they are members of the Gig Harbor Yacht Club. Skippers can sign up to receive details and more information by sending their name, boat name and length, email address and home port or club to ghyclightedparade@ gmail.com. There is no fee and no commitment. “Just come, join the parade and have fun,” encourages John.
