Paradise in the Harbor An experience you don’t want to miss. By Julianna Verboort. Photos courtesy of Berrylane Photography.

Shortly after our 2012 move to Gig Harbor, I had one of my favorite “Harbor experiences.” I took my family to see a performance of Dracula at the local Paradise Theatre. Lights dimmed, actors took the stage, and through the magic of sound, costume, and drama, we were transported to Transylvania. Our twelve-year-olds watched transfixed from our stage-side perch. We jumped with fright and gasped in dread as victims fell prey to the Count, completely immersed as Dracula’s world played out before us. When the house lights rose at the end, the actors met the audience in the lobby; we shook Dracula’s hand (yikes!) and eagerly shared our compliments. Professional quality performance aside, there were other perks too. We’d spent the prior year in the Bay Area, where taking the family to a live performance required half a paycheck. We felt relieved by the modest ticket prices at Paradise and absolutely giddy about the free parking just steps away from the theatre’s front door (have you ever tried parking in San Francisco’s theatre district?). And to our childrens’ amazement, they could bring candy purchased at the concessions counter inside the theatre to munch during the performance -- a pleasure unheard of in our previous theatre experiences. The experience

was simultaneously high-caliber and down-toearth; a perfect night out. Not many towns of Gig Harbor’s size can claim such a delightful slice of Paradise. This local treasure is a happy luxury for all: great for families, date night, an outing with friends, or as a special gift. Paradise Theatre’s mission is “To provide engaging theatre experiences of the highest quality that will uplift and entertain!” My family says, “Mission accomplished.” Learn more with Vicki Richards, Executive Artistic Director at Paradise: Q: How long has Paradise Theatre been around? A: Paradise Theatre was created 15 years ago to serve the community by providing both theatre education and professional entertainment. We started out with Dinner Theatre in a 100plus year old Victorian building, serving up performances from Neil Simon, Charles Ludlam, Gershwin, and many more alongside delicious candlelit dinners. During summers, we performed Broadway style shows like West Side Story and Guys and Dolls in an outdoor amphitheatre. With all we were doing, it became clear we needed a facility that could

meet multiple needs, so Paradise Theatre moved to our current building on Burnham Drive. Q: Do you still performances?

theatre

A: We had stopped for three years, but there was a clear demand for us to revive dinner theatre; now we offer one Saturday dinner theatre performance for each production. Q: You mentioned theatre education too. Tell me more about that. A: Throughout the year we provide classes, workshops, guest seminars and educational opportunities for children. Workshops during the year have culminated in children’s productions of Treasure Island, Oliver!, and more. We have Paradise Summer Camp, a twoweek musical theatre camp for ages 3-18. Guest artists from all over the Northwest come to teach and entertain. Our classes and summer workshops have served Gig Harbor for 20 years. Q: Paradise Theatre’s website has information about your great line-up of instructors. Do you have classes for adults too? A: Yes, we have held classes for adults. A few

This local treasure is a happy luxury for all: great for families, date night, an outing with friends, or as a special gift. examples include dance, improvisation, and acting. Q: How would I find out about your class schedule? A: All information about classes can be found on our website, www.paradisetheatre.org, as well as information about our productions. Tickets can be purchased there too; events sell out quickly! Q: Where do your performers come from, and how do you advertise for auditions? A: We have a number of regulars who perform in shows each year, and we actively recruit from Gig Harbor, Bremerton, Tacoma and beyond. Paradise Theatre conducts yearly general auditions for the upcoming season as well as callbacks for individual shows.

Interested people can check our website for dates and specifics. Q: There is an initiative to build a regional visual and performing arts complex in Gig Harbor. How would Paradise Theatre integrate with that? A: Paradise has been part of the planning for that project for the past two years. Should the project come to fruition, Paradise would have a home there. The regional arts complex is some years away, and in the immediate future, we have decided to find a new location on our own. Q: What else would you like to share with Gig Harbor community about Paradise Theatre? A: A big change is approaching. Our present location has been sold to a developer, so very shortly we’ll kick off a campaign to raise funds for a new facility. Our goal is to provide Gig Harbor with a centrally located performance and educational venue and a vibrant, thriving environment to serve the community. We invite anyone with an interest in this project to contact us. We encourage everyone to join us in our 15th year of providing theatre and classes in the Gig Harbor community and beyond!

It’s a Girl! WELCOME, J-50.

BY JULIANNA VERBOORT. PHOTO COURTESY OF CENTER FOR WHALE RESEARCH, WWW.WHALERESEARCH.COM.

For the first time in two and a half years, J pod greeted the successful birth of a beautiful new family member. Baby orca J-50 was spotted just as 2014 came to a close. Ken Balcomb of the Center for Whale Research (CWR) spotted the baby on December 30, and the calf ’s unexpected appearance made a splash in the news. A photo of the baby breaching helped CWR to determine its sex, and they shared “It’s a girl!” Have you seen these black and white beauties cruising our waters? Three pods (J, K, and L) comprise the endangered southern resident orca population in Puget Sound. Scientists assign the whales alphanumeric names to help with tracking and identification. News of the baby was an especially welcome surprise following the death of a pregnant female from J pod in early December. Balcomb saw little J-50 swimming alongside J-16, a 43-year-old female. Because age 43 is considered beyond reproductive norms for these whales, CWR speculated that J-16’s oldest female calf, J-36, might be the baby’s mother. Orcas are social and exhibit caring behaviors, and “babysitting” is common. CWR and partners will study the behavior between J-16, J-50, and J-36 to shed light on the lineage within this orca family.

LIVINGLOCAL

WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM FEBRUARY 2015

How important is this new baby? In an interview published by Oregon Public Broadcasting, Balcomb explained, “Over the last two and a half years we have not had any calves survive, and of course 100 percent mortality in offspring is not good for (the) future.” He shared that the whales are now swimming one thousand miles or more in search of their primary food, endangered salmon. As apex predators, toxins from prey build up in the whales’ organs and blubber. Lack of food and pollution impact their reproductive and immune systems. “Puget Sound is both beautiful and ecologically unique,” says Joel Bird, Environmental Laboratory Director for the State of Washington Department of Ecology. “Living here, we have the opportunity to help restore the Sound. Every day our choices either help or hurt the water quality. Most of us have made mistakes like washing paint down the sink or spraying chemicals in our yards, but we have learned how that harms our environment. Now we can make choices to actively take part in healing the environment.” Keep your eyes on the sound and perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to get a peek at the new little one. Welcome J-50, we’re glad you are here!

Carving Time WHAT YOU SAY “YES” TO DETERMINES WHAT YOU SAY “NO” TO. BY DEBORAH OLIVE.

Life Coaching Each of us already fills 24-hours a day, so carving off the pieces that don’t match our vision is important.

Karen felt most alive in front of a canvas, and she aspired to paint art that people would cherish for years. Often, one of her paintings delighted a client with its color, image and meaning in a way that totally transformed the character of their space. She imagined sales from her artwork would supplement her retirement income. There was only one problem. Her highpowered corporate position consumed her time. She worked long hours, and by the weekend she had little energy for more than household chores, precious time with her husband and visits with her grandchildren. Like many, the vision Karen once cherished faded over time. Instead of the joy she once felt looking at her art studio through her kitchen window, she felt guilt and frustration because she spent so little time there.

to.” Her homework was to notice what increased joy in her day-to-day living and what depleted it. She became more aware of the details in her life. Initially, it was difficult to say “no.”

Karen, not her real name, is similar to many of my clients. She’s successful and talented, but her dream was on hold. She wondered if she’d ever have time to pursue her art.

For the first time in years, Karen began to consistently generate small pieces of art. Initially, she’d create a sketch or a simple watercolor. Delighted by how it felt, she made it a weekly habit. Soon one of her pieces was selected for a public art display, and her enthusiasm made it easier to set time aside to paint. As her perspective shifted, she realized two things. First, it was okay to claim time for what she loved;

We started our work together by clarifying her vision, including what it feels like to paint and actively create art. I introduced a powerful idea “what you say ‘yes’ to determines what you say ‘no’

18

LIVINGLOCAL

I helped her consider tasks she could delegate. She became more patient and allowed her direct reports to make mistakes – on the way to learning. She began to include them in problem solving. She catalyzed the executive team to handle deadlines more creatively and more effectively. Having a coach to ask questions, discuss ideas and provide accountability supported her to change long time patterns. She became skillful in saying “no”, regained control over her time and had more energy.

and secondly, painting added value to her family. As her coach, I’m delighted by her success and that she accomplished in a little over six months what she’d longed to do for nearly a decade. Carve Away Another artist, Gutzon Borglum, famous for his design of Mt Rushmore, carved the bust of Lincoln. His cleaning woman wondered what the artist was working on. As a head emerged from the stone, she knew it was a human figure. Later, she recognized the face and asked Borglum, “How did you know Mr. Lincoln was in there?” He responded, “I just cut away everything that wasn’t Lincoln.” Each of us already fills 24-hours a day, so carving off the pieces that don’t match our vision is important. We develop clarity, prioritization and take consistent action toward our vision. In time, we experience the changes we long for. The art of remaining enthusiastic and building momentum toward your vision is often a matter of subtraction rather than addition.

Help for seniors moving to new living spaces

A Gentle Transition TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS FOR OUR SENIOR POPULATION.

A Personal Move Manager will handle every step:

✓ Expert Guidance ✓ Organizing & Downsizing

✓ Estate & Auction Oversight

✓ Packing & Moving Assistance

✓ House

BY SARAH FRIESEN. Betty’s 91-year-old mother hesitantly found the words she was afraid to say as she watched the greatgrandkids playing in the yard. “This house is so big and sometimes I feel like I can’t do this alone anymore. It’s so hard to keep up. I miss your dad… and…” She looked back into her daughter’s eyes, searching for reassurance, afraid of what her confession would mean. “I think I need to sell the house.” Comforting her mother and swallowing the lump in her throat, Betty quickly said that she’d take care of everything. However, it wasn’t long before Betty realized the magnitude of what the next three months would hold: finding a Realtor, preparing the house for sale, sorting 91 years of treasures, choosing a retirement home, making decisions on where furniture would go, and what items needed to be sold or be donated. “I don’t know how to take a 3,000 square foot home and all these memories and fit it into a 500 square foot apartment,” she confessed. “I’m very overwhelmed.”

Making a major move at any age is difficult and stressful. Recognizing and managing the stress of downsizing and relocating older adults is the hallmark of the National Association of Senior Move Managers® (NASMM) who are bound by a pledge of integrity, safety and ethics. Although specific services vary, most Senior Move Managers® can help with some or all of the following: • Developing an overall move or “age in place” plan • Organizing, sorting and downsizing • Customized floor plans • Arranging for the profitable disposal of unwanted items through auction, estate sale, buy-out, consignment, donation, or a combination of the above • Interviewing, scheduling and overseeing movers • Arranging shipments and storage • Supervise and oversight of professional packing • Unpacking and setting up the new home • Related services, such as cleaning, waste removal, shopping, senior escort, assisting with selection of a realtor and helping prepare the home to be sold If you can relate to Betty and have a family member or friend transitioning to a new living space in 2015, contact your local Senior Move Manager® and they can create a customized plan and support you every step of the way.

What Does 2015 Hold in Store for Investors?

Make Your Financial Future a Priority.

ARTICLE FOR USE BY EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR ERIN ABRIGO OF GIG HARBOR. If you’re an investor, you probably had a pretty good year in 2014. But what’s in store for 2015? It’s essentially impossible to make precise predictions about the performance of the financial markets — but it is possible to identify those economic conditions and market forces that may help shape the outcomes in the investment world for 2015. And by paying close attention to these conditions and forces, you can gain some valuable insights as to what investment moves might make sense for you. Here are a few of these moves to consider: • Consider adding stocks. With stock prices having climbed higher and higher for more than five years, you might be wondering if it’s time to scale back on your ownership of equities. After all, no “bull” market lasts forever. Still, some factors point to continued strength for stocks over the long term. First, we are seeing signs of improving economic growth; employment gains and low oil prices are giving consumers more confidence, leading to a boost in spending. Second, corporate earnings —a key driver of stock prices — were quite strong in the second half of 2014, and companies appear poised to show more good results in 2015. And third, stocks — at least, large-company stocks — are still reasonably valued, as measured by their price-to-earnings ratios (P/E). Given these factors, you might want to think about adding quality stocks to your holdings — assuming, of course, that these stocks can help meet your needs for a balanced portfolio. And be aware that even the most favorable conditions can’t assure a continued run-up in stock prices.

you may want to take a close look at your bonds and other fixed-rate investments. As you probably know, when interest rates rise, the value of existing bonds typically falls, because investors won’t pay full price for your bonds when they can get newly issued ones that pay higher rates. One way to combat the effects of rising rates is to build a “ladder” consisting of short-, intermediateand long-term bonds. • Look for investment opportunities abroad. Although economic growth has been slow in parts of the world, especially China, many countries have now initiated policies to spur economic growth. These actions can create opportunities for international equity investments. The world of global investing can be complex, though, so before taking action, you may want to consult with a financial professional. There are no guarantees, but by following the above suggestions, you may be able to take advantage of what looks to be a fairly favorable investment environment for 2015. While you should make most of your investment decisions based on long-term considerations, it’s always a good idea to be attuned to what’s happening in the world around you — and to respond appropriately.

• Prepare for rising interest rates. For several years, interest rates have been at, or near, historical lows. Given the strengthening economy, and the decreased need for stimulus, the Federal Reserve may well raise short-term interest rates in 2015, perhaps as early as this summer. But long-term rates may start rising even before then, so

Home Redefined & Reconsidered DESIGNING WALKABLE COMMUNITIES.

interested in performing walking audits and promoting walkable communities. Walking audits allow members of the community a way to collect information for creating and maintaining a pedestrian-friendly environment. The most important part of the audit is our participation— those who know the area.

BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS. PHOTOS BY JOSH SHERWIN, WATERFRONT ALLIANCE. When people ask about your home, what do you say? Do you comment upon the structure you live in, the neighborhood, or your location within the community? By definition, your home is the place where you live. So, why did you choose where you live? Did you consider variables such as: affordability, employment opportunities, education, commuting options, proximity to family and friends, good food, good culture, right down to the size of the town or city?

Our built environment provides opportunities for us to connect with each other. From our neighborhoods, streets to sidewalks and stores, we form relationships by encountering our community on foot.

How do we design where we live? We provide more choices and opportunities. We create city centers and neighborhoods that allow parents to feel comfortable to give their children freedom to play. We create safe sidewalks that allow for all ability levels to move comfortably. We design and create a built environment that encourages us to have a positive outdoor experience, develop relationships within our community, and connect with the places where we live.

According to the Feet First Organization, walking is a vital mode of transport that connects communities, reduces pollution and improves our health while allowing us to explore our natural environment. This Washington based organization guides citizens and professionals

A wide range of design and planning occurs in our communities: local comprehensive plans, transportation plans, zoning ordinances, open space plans and more. As community members, we have the opportunity to weigh-in on these issues.

Typically, we choose to settle down where we find the best fit within a community. Soon after, we become community members full of pride and a sense of responsibility for our built environment.

Walking audits promote citizen interaction. The results of the audits will be put into a report that will support our city planning and create action items we can tackle as a community. We have an opportunity to make a great difference in our own backyard. Wouldn’t it be great if we designed our cities for safe walking, jogging, biking and car travel that makes a trip to the store, school or local parks both safe and fun? With your feedback, we can! Go to www.feetfirst.org/gig-harbor-waterfrontwalking-audit. Print out the route, grab a pen and go for a walk! Assess what’s working. Describe what’s missing or in disrepair. Comment on public access and signage to the waterfront and amenities. Assess the position and condition of sidewalks, crossings, bike lanes and bus stops. Take the opportunity to share your thoughts for future plans. If you choose, bring along a camera to record specific observations.

Positive Experience We design and create a built environment that encourages us to have a positive outdoor experience, develop relationships within our community, and connect with the places where we live. Now is the time. There’s room for improvement, and the people in positions to make change to our city plans and policies have asked for our input and their pens are poised. Rally and show our community that you care by engaging. Let’s make great change together! LIFE & COMMUNITY Local Events and Stories

Remembering Oso EVEN MUDSLIDES CANNOT DAMPEN HUMAN SPIRIT AND GENEROSITY OF GIG HARBOR RESIDENTS.

BY SARAH POLYAKOV. PHOTOS COURTESY OF KIMBER LAWRENCE.

On March 29th, 2014, many people lost their homes and their lives in an instant when an unstable hillside came tumbling down. This mudslide, which encompassed a full square mile of land and engulfed 49 homes in an instant, has been recognized as the single most deadly landslide event in U.S. history. Some who witnessed the slide from afar compared it to a large, deadly tsunami that came out of nowhere. Even though Oso is literally a hundred miles away from our beautiful, waterfront community, what happened to residents of Oso that day touched our hearts and minds. In Gig Harbor, news of the mudslide could have gotten lost in the noise of bad news presented each night at 6pm. Instead, we quickly realized

that we could have been those families who were out of house and home and with one less beloved family member at Sunday dinner. That’s when members of our community took action. Soon after news of the event, Kimber and Matt Lawrence were at home during a moment of quiet. That’s when an idea was sparked in Matt’s mind to help the community of Oso, since it did not feel right to Matt or Kimber to sit back and do nothing. Led by McKee Mosher and Kimber and Matt Lawrence, a relief effort was organized to gather monetary aid for members of the Oso community. Without support from any larger organizations or the media,

25

this small team of concerned citizens quickly approached their friends and neighbors, asking them to get involved and to spread the word. As news spread by word of mouth and more people got involved, their single spark of an idea to help turned into the Oso Mudslide Relief Benefit. Kimber found the location and the bands, while McKee secured all of the food and organized the broader aspects of the event. Patty Novogradac oversaw the auction. The final event involved over 100 local companies and individuals, while 250 people attended the Oso Mudslide Relief Benefit. The bands The Woodys, Rocker Box, and Trademark entertained guests while Kevin and Lori McStay served as MCs for this event. Friends put together a slide show of all the anonymous volunteers who dropped everything to help first responders. Keith Davies, who was one of the first responders in Oso, also spoke at the event and there was not a dry eye in the house. All of the food was donated by local restaurants Spiro’s, the Harvester, and Franz bread company. The Eagles Club donated their facility, gave full access to the on-site kitchen, and provided a staffed no-host bar for guests. There were hundreds of amazing, donated items for bid at the auction from local Gig Harbor businesses. Les Schwab, The Inn at Gig Harbor, Halftime Salon, Lunchbox Laboratory, DPI Printing, Jax Salon and Spa, Heritage Distilling, Blazing Onion, and Home Depot were among the many donors.

There were also individual donors such as Jim Hines who donated Seahawks tickets, and Jim and Kathy Endres who donated Rainier Tickets inside a VIP box; Nick Babich donated 25 lbs. of salmon, and artist Lola Waller donated an original watercolor of Pike Place Market. In the end, over $10,000 was raised by the event, even though there was no formal press that had spread the word. McKee, Kimber, and Matt brought the $10,000 check personally to United Way President, Dennis Smith, to ensure that the funds went solely to the Oso relief efforts. Kimber reiterated why getting involved was so essential: “Helping the community of Oso was so important because it could have been one of us who lost everything. We are very community oriented, as are our friends, and could not remain mere bystanders.” Finally, Matt concluded with the spirit of the whole event, “Everyone involved did not want anything out of this event except to help the people of Oso. It truly makes me feel good about living where we live.”

The Event In the end, over $10,000 was raised by the event, even though there was no formal press that had spread the word.

This is what grass roots movements are all about—the profound desire to give to another, whether friend or stranger, regardless of whether or not one has connections, currency, or a media platform to spread the word. When you begin with the motive to put personal gain aside and to do something good, everything falls into place.

Everyone involved did not want anything out of this event except to help the people of Oso. It truly makes me feel good about living where we live.

PROTECTION AND PLANNING Local insurance agent offers insurance services as well as financial planning. By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Lauren Cross Photography and Jeanne Phinney Photography. Insurance can be an overwhelming process. After all, in the event of a loss you want to be sure you and your family are adequately protected. That’s where the assistance of a knowledgeable agent can provide you peace of mind. For those in Gig Harbor, they are fortunate to have the services of Kent Cashman, a third generation State Farm Agent. But Cashman is more than an insurance agent; he also provides financial services to his clients. “State Farm has positioned their agents uniquely compared to other insurance companies,” explains Cashman. “Aside from the traditional insurance products, which include auto, home, life, health and business insurance, we also offer financial services which includes retirement reporting, retirement planning, college savings and investing.” In addition, they also offer a full service State Farm Bank, which provides them an opportunity to offer their clients a venue to obtain vehicle loans and refinancing. What does all this mean for Cashman’s clients? It means he is able to take a holistic approach to each client and his or her insurance needs while considering their entire financial picture.

Cashman and his team have a tremendous amount of resources available to ensure all of their clients’ needs are met both in insurance protection and planning for the future, all of which Cashman says is backed by the largest mutual company in the United States that is second to none when it comes to financial strength. Since opening his State Farm office in April of last year, Cashman has already benefited many clients by helping them navigate through the world of insurance as well as guiding them on the path to their financial goals.

Believing in the fact that community is what it’s all about, Cashman is a supporter of many local organizations including Relay for Life, Junior Achievement, Peninsula boys’ and girls’ basketball, Gig Harbor boys’ basketball, Family Funfest and the Scarecrow Festival, Race For A Soldier, and Toys for Tots. Cashman attributes his success to the community, his clients, his staff and his wife, who he says has been extremely supportive. “It’s not every day that you quit your job and take a chance on opening your own business with a 3 month old at home,” he said.

Cashman is no stranger to the world of insurance and is a familiar face in Gig Harbor. His parents moved to Gig Harbor in 1988 when his father, also a State Farm agent, relocated from California. “I have been close by ever since,” said Cashman, who worked for Russell Investments in both Seattle and Tacoma for seven years prior to starting his career with State Farm.

Cashman is grateful to his team who he said realizes the importance of taking care of their clients. “In order for us to be truly great at what we do, it takes a lot of effort and hard work, and they are pushing hard to do things right,” said Cashman. “I am fortunate to be working with some great individuals and am proud to have them on my team.”

He and his wife, Layne, attended Purdy Elementary, Harbor Ridge Middle School, Peninsula High School and they both graduated from the University of Washington. They love the area and agree that Gig Harbor is the perfect place to raise their son, Ethan.

LIFE & COMMUNITY

GIG HARBOR

IN FOCUS SWIMMING FORWARD

An Olympic athlete crafts a community-focused life in Gig Harbor. By Julianna Verboort. Photos courtesy of Amanda Beard.

“Somehow I kept my head above water. I relied on the discipline, character, and strength that I had started to develop as that little girl in her first swimming pool.” –Esther Williams (1921-2013), American competitive swimmer and actress Picture perfect. That is what you’d think looking at this recent transplant to Gig Harbor. She is knock-your-socks-off beautiful, with the natural glow of the uberfit. She’s had a successful (sometimes racy) modeling career and built a family with a sociable husband and two cute-as-a-button “littles.” And notably, this focused woman has achieved championship status as a competitive swimmer, bringing home a stellar seven Olympic medals for the USA. We have a new celeb in town: Amanda Beard. It seems natural to view Amanda as an always-confident superstar. But in her 2012 memoir and New York Times best-seller, “In The Water, They Can’t See You Cry,” she candidly divulges depression, self-destructive behaviors, unhealthy relationships, and an eating disorder that followed her victorious 1996 Olympic debut in Atlanta. Having made the team as a petite, pre-pubescent 14-year-old, Amanda exceeded expectations, winning silver in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke and gold in the 400-meter relay. Then, she grew. “At 14 in the Olympics I was less than 100 lbs. In the next three years, I grew 30 pounds and 6 inches. It really affected my swimming.” As Amanda worked to adapt, she says, “Newspapers and articles talked about how I was a ‘one hit wonder’ and wouldn’t be able to compete again. I couldn’t shake those comments. I thought that I was too fat to be a swimmer, but I was not at all. Then in high school, being around a lot of peer pressure, it all really started to change the way I viewed myself.” Personal struggles plagued her into her 20s, yet she achieved success in three more Olympics and was also in demand as a model. It seems the striking photos would have squelched her body-image turmoil, yet the opposite happened. “I felt good in those moments, on the shoots, but I also saw the hours in makeup and hair styling, and then the Photoshopping, I’ve seen the distortion of the images. I knew I did not look like that when I woke up. I was constantly trying to live up to that.” Life turned around when she met her husband, Sacha Brown, on a photo shoot in 2005. Within a year, they were sharing their lives together. Sacha encouraged Amanda to enter therapy, and she began her road to recovery.

ABOVE Blaise and Doone casting long shadows in the sunshine of Gig Harbor. Amanda says parenting is her biggest accomplishment.

TOP RIGHT Amanda Beard plans to share her passion for swimming with Gig Harbor residents in the near future.

Moving forward, Amanda considered what she wanted to share with the world when she was approached about writing a book. “I wanted it to be very raw and real. The reality

is that I went through a lot of different things. There are a lot of young athletes who may be dealing with the same things. I wanted them to know you can push through, you can be successful. I didn’t want anyone to feel alone with what they were experiencing.” Amanda also evaluated her longer-term goals. At University of Arizona in Tucson, she had studied retail and consumer sciences. “I always knew I wanted to open my own something. I had to find out what that would be. I thought about a women’s clothing boutique, but my priorities have shifted since having kids. I feel it is important to bring something to my community.” Sacha too was ready for something new, and after years of living in Tucson, they wanted to make a move before their young son entered school. “We came to Gig Harbor because I have a lot of family here. My parents were born and raised in Tacoma and University Place. My mom and sister are here, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, all in the area.” She adds, “We love it here. We’re starting to find our groove. Sacha and I are water people, and seeing water on a daily basis, it’s huge for us. In Tucson, we’d drive three hours to get to the closest lake!”

Champion athlete, conqueror of demons, published author, wife and mother. What is next for Amanda Beard? “Now my whole focus is opening a learn-toswim school. I’ve been working with water safety and drowning prevention since I was 14 years old. I want everyone to have the opportunity to be confident in the water, to be safe, to know what they’re doing. The primary focus is going to be babies to age eight, but I will welcome and create groups for anyone who wants to become more confident in the water.”

In the meantime, Amanda, Sacha, Blaise and Doone will continue planting roots in their new hometown. “Because I’m an athlete people can think I am strict with myself. People can be surprised when they meet me at how goofy I am. I like having a connection with people. If you see me around feel free to introduce yourself! But if Sacha is with me you’ll never leave, he’ll talk to someone on the street for hours!” Crafting a life of community connection, it sounds like Amanda Beard is here to stay.

She adds that, in our area, “With kayaking, boating, diving, so many water activities, why would you not want to be confident and feel safe? I think it will be a great addition to the community. I want to share some of my passion.” Amanda is scouting locations with the goal of opening before summer 2016. “My business partner’s mom is a learn-to-swim guru. We’re adopting her methodology, and we’re very excited to bring this new approach to Gig Harbor.” As for the boutique dream, don’t be surprised if you find a great selection of swim gear and water toys at her school, too.

TA-DAH! Transform your home with the help of a professional. By Patty Hutchens. Photo of Julia Horner by Digishotz Photography. Have you ever looked around your home and wondered how the place that used to be so inviting became so cluttered? Whether you are staging your home to sell or just want to make your space more livable, Julia Horner, owner of Artistic Home Stagings, is available to help you.

easily make the difference between turning around and heading back out the door or starting to imagine their belongings in your home. With her clients’ budget in mind, Julia sees your home through an artist’s eye. Where you may see an overwhelming project, Julia sees endless possibilities.

Since first opening in 2006, Julia has assisted homeowners in everything from providing color consultations for both interior and exterior to offering assistance in furniture, art and accessory placement. And if you love to decorate and entertain for the holidays, Artistic Home Stagings can help stage your home to make your holiday entertaining a great experience.

Over the years, Julia has helped countless area Realtors stage homes for those selling both vacant and occupied properties. It is those Realtors to whom Julia attributes her success. She has worked with many of the top producers in the area on many occasions, helping their mutual clients maximize the return on their properties.

Julia’s talent is one that many value and appreciate. As an Accredited Staging Professional Master© and a Certified Color Consultant, Julia was personally trained by the inventor of staging, Barb Schwarz of Stagedhomes.com. If you are selling your home, chances are your budget is tight as you have probably made improvements or performed maintenance to ready the home for sale. But what truly catches a potential buyer’s eye is the first impression. What they see upon entering your home can

“I work closely with my clients encouraging them to de-clutter and organize their properties,” said Julia. “Keeping in mind the features of the property, I effectively arrange furniture, art and accessories to highlight these features.” The end result? A satisfied customer whose property is positioned above the competition, which typically results in not only a quicker sale, but also a higher sale price. One popular service Julia provides is a staging consultation; a tour of the property with the owners where she points out things the owner needs to do to prepare their home for

Upon completion by the homeowner, Julia follows up to fine-tune the staging prior to listing. Julia also lends her expertise to those seeking to make their homes feel less cluttered and more livable. What Julia refers to as “staging to live” can involve many different aspects, whether it’s finding a more calming paint color, displaying your treasured collectibles, or simply arranging furniture, Julia can help you fall in love with your home all over again. “I love the look on my clients’ faces when they see their newly staged house,” shares Julia. Julia is passionate about her work and takes great pride in the end result of transforming what can be a vacant, cold feeling house to a warm and inviting space. “Once it’s staged, it’s a space that they want to be in! I love that!!!”

Perseverance. That is what Peninsula High School senior Garrett Smith has learned over the course of his years in athletics. “In life sometimes you are told that you can’t do things,” said the basketball and baseball player. “(But) if you push yourself every day, you will get what you want.” It was that philosophy that helped Garrett overcome a dislocated knee and broken kneecap last year; something he says has been his biggest challenge in sports. Garrett has lettered in basketball for four years and was named team captain the last two years. “We have the best chemistry out of any team I’ve been on,” said Garrett of his basketball team. He also is a three-time letterman in baseball. With all of the dedication that sports requires, Garrett still manages to hold a 3.0 GPA. While Garrett’s injury last year was unfortunate, it did guide him on a chosen career path - becoming a physical therapist.

Custom Artwork & Logo Services “Physical therapists work with people and help them return to good health,” said Garrett of why he is interested in the profession. Garrett credits coaches Pete Weymiller and Jake Jackson with teaching him that he should never take anything for granted. “You have to compete hard in everything you do whether that’s on the court or off; because looking back on it if you do these things, you won’t have any regrets.” Gig Harbor High School – Jackson Curtis For most athletes, the game or match comes down to the number of points posted on the scoreboard. But when you are a swimmer, it’s a whole different story. “My biggest challenge has been trying to continually improve in a sport where winning is measured in tenths or hundredths of a second,” said Jackson Curtis, captain of the Gig Harbor High School boys’ swim team. “Any slight change in stroke, breathing, turns, and starts can mean the difference between first and sixth place.”

Jackson is looking forward to attending Pacific Lutheran University next year, where he has been accepted into the business school and was awarded a merit scholarship. He will also continue his swimming career there as well. “I am very interested in starting my own company. I’ve always considered myself a leader, and by starting my own company, I can put my leadership skills to work both in practice and by example,” said Jackson. Jackson credits GHHS Coach Mike Kelly with teaching him that success doesn’t come easy as it takes hard work and dedication. “I’ve also learned that teamwork is critical as it is difficult to achieve success by yourself,” said Jackson.

But success is something that Jackson knows well. He is a member of the 2014 4A State Champion 4 x 50 freestyle relay, and took second place in the 2014 4A state 4 x 100 freestyle relay. “Both these races broke the GHHS records,” said Jackson.

GRAB YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND CAMERA TO DOCUMENT THESE ONCE A YEAR EVENTS. BY SARAH POLYAKOV. Each of us can get an idea of what effects future climate change might look like during the highest tides. When the highest tides of the year meet the shores of Puget Sound, we can witness coastal erosion first-hand. This effect is magnified during storms on high tide days. Did you know that the highest and lowest tides of the year will occur a few days in late January and late February this year? These extreme fluctuations in tidal height are referred to as King Tides. They appear due to increased gravitational pull when the earth, moon and sun are aligned in what is called perigee and perihelion. This alignment creates the largest tidal range of the year, and we will have the opportunity to

COVER STORY IT’S DOGGONE LOVE!

A recent study is neuroscience validates what canine enthusiasts have known all along. By Sarah Polyakov.

“Dogs are minor angels, and I don’t mean that facetiously. They love unconditionally, forgive immediately, are the truest of friends, willing to do anything that makes us happy.” – Jonathan Carroll When you look into the eyes of a Golden Retriever, what do you see? In those large and innocent brown eyes, I see hopefulness, playfulness, and of course love. But, perhaps the particular eyes you see reflecting love back to you are different. They may belong to a pug, a spaniel, or perhaps a terrier named Corky. No matter what breed the dog, whether bounding retriever or playful poodle, I know one thing for sure - every dog expresses or is capable of expressing unconditional love. Still, there are many who are simply not in agreement with me. Where I see love, most scientists would say that I see a figment of my imagination. Quick to accuse folks like me of anthropomorphizing animals, most scientists posit that it is only we humans who are capable of love. Just as quickly, they dismiss the canine/ human bond as an adaptive strategy solely for the acquisition of food. Happily, the results of a recent study provide us with some hopeful clues as to what dogs might be thinking. Gregory Berns, MD, PhD, who is a Distinguished Professor of Neuroeconomics at Emory University, has been able to shed light on what goes on within the canine mind.

Despite his multiple degrees and scientific training, his life-long dream had always been to answer one simple question: do dogs love us? With grants from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Berns received the funding to explore this question. Remarkably, he has been able to see for the first time what goes on in the mind of dogs by using fMRI technology. He and his staff have trained a group of canines to willingly sit inside an fMRI so that changes in the canine brain and thought patterns may be seen and measured. Since dogs ‘see’ the world through scent, changes in each canine’s cognition and emotions have been measured via the use of scent. Each dog has been presented with objects that contain the scent of their owners and also the scent of strangers. When presented with the scent of their owners, the reward center in the canine’s brain was triggered. It was found without a doubt that the dogs in the study loved their owner’s scent above any other scent. More information on these findings can be discovered in Berns’ book “How Dogs Love Us.”

Love is a Two-Way Street

How far will a dog’s love go?

Biologists, psychologists, and many physicians have known for years that humans benefit from interaction with their pets. Forward-thinking hospitals utilize dogs on cardiac wards because their presence is linked to higher survival rates in patients. This is great news for humans, but how do dogs feel about us?

If you scan the news, you can occasionally find a good news story about a dog saving the life of an owner. For example, in 2008 a dog named Maya was awarded the Dog of the Year award for saving her owner from a male attacker who sought to take the life of Maya’s owner.

Fortunately, it appears that the benefits in terms of feelings of wellbeing go both ways. A study in Sweden recently demonstrated that dogs seem to benefit emotionally as much as we humans from our relationship with them.

However, there are even more dramatic stories than these. Cecil Williams, a 61-year-old blind man from New York City, got to experience first hand how far a dog’s love will go. When he found himself in a life and death situation with only seconds to spare, his dog Orlando was put to the ultimate test. Williams, who is a diabetic, was on his way to a dental appointment when he lost consciousness and fell onto the subway tracks in Harlem. His dog Orlando followed him onto the tracks without question. On-lookers alerted the conductor to stop the subway as they yelled to an unconscious Cecil.

A study in Sweden recently demonstrated that dogs seem to benefit emotionally as much as we humans from our relationship with them.

It has also been demonstrated by other experiments that dogs are able to understand the difference between happy, distressed, and sad humans. Dogs are able to comprehend owners’ speech and pitch and respond to them in a way that seems to demonstrate empathy.

44

During the study, the hormonal levels of dogs and human volunteers were measured. When volunteers petted and interacted with the dogs in the study, both the dogs and the humans released copious amounts of oxytocin. This hormone that invokes feelings of wellbeing and bonding is also released when human loved ones hug or participate in other loving activities.

LIVINGLOCAL

But, as the train bore over Cecil and Orlando, everyone turned away, shrieking in horror. To everyone’s surprise and after the train passed over the pair, witnesses found that Orlando was next to his master in the middle of the track. Somehow, they were positioned so that the subway had passed over both of them and master and dog remained completely unharmed.

This type of canine loyalty is far from being a recent occurrence. Let’s take for example the legendary loyalty of a Japanese dog named Hachiko. Each day, Hachiko would accompany his master to the Shibuya train station and wait for his master to come back from his work at the University of Tokyo. This daily act of loyalty occurred for years, even after his master died. Up until the day Hachiko died, he could be found waiting for his master in the same spot. Today a statue stands in his place to commemorate this act of loyalty that transcends both time and culture. Martin Luther once noted, “The dog is the most faithful of animals and would be much esteemed were it not so common. Our Lord God has made His greatest gifts the commonest.” This Valentine’s Day, lets endeavor to create a love that is more inclusive and recognize that the affection that all of us seek may already be laying near a warm fire and right beside our feet. FAR LEFT Dogs really are man’s best friend.

Valentine’s Day A HOW-TO GUIDE.

Ah yes, Valentines Day, both beloved and dreaded by many. I’ve planned extravagant dates, wallowed in my singleness, and one year grabbed beers with buddies before seeing Die Hard. This year, several friends have asked my opinion on how they should plan to spend their day, thus inspiring me to write this little “how-to guide.” Ladies

BY MIKE TRITTIN.

I know we don’t seem so simple, but we value you more than you think we do. Guys don’t normally think Valentine’s Day is about them at all; holidays surrounded by the marketing of roses and chocolate don’t really speak to anything “macho.” Thus, something special for your guy goes a long way. • What’s important to him? Golf? Football? Movies? Do something that you know is specifically special to him. Maybe it’s concert tickets or cooking dinner for him and two buddies while they watch the game. Support something important to him; it’ll go a long way. • Do something that tells him you value and support him. Knowing that our sweetheart believes in us is huge. We crave respect and appreciation.

LIVINGLOCAL

WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM FEBRUARY 2015

Gentlemen Guys, this is your chance to “wow” your sweetheart. • Plan Ahead - Don’t do what I did and wait until the last minute to make a reservation. You won’t get one, and you’ll end up eating Taco Time (trying to spark up some romance with massive heartburn is next to impossible). Make a reservation early at a spot you know she’ll love. Do your research if you need to; her friends will tell you what she likes. • Do Something Special - After dinner, take a walk. Have a wine/dessert picnic at a pre-planned bonfire. Stay away from clichè. Do something nobody’s ever done for her before. Making memories is key. • Think Different for Gifts - Listen for clues on what she’d like as a gift. Maybe she needs new boots, a replacement watch, or has been mentioning how she wished she could go for a spa day. Take notes and show you’ve been listening; you’ll be shocked at how well this will pay off for you. Oh, and always accompany it with flowers. Tips to Keep You Healthy

A Smarter Way of Pain Relief LIVE A VITAL LIFE WITH ARTHRITIS.

BY TERRI ROSSI.

Mary tightened her grip on the hairbrush and grimaced in pain. Today’s rain and low barometric pressure predictably made the osteoarthritis in her hand and knee joints ache with a deep nagging throb. She had spent a small fortune on non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil and Aleve and joint supplements like glucosamine chondroitin and had not gotten much pain relief. And she worried because recent research had drawn a connection to NSAIDs and liver damage. Yet, she feared to turn to stronger steroid-based drugs because of the nasty side effects like cataracts and frequent bronchial infections.

So Mary felt encouraged when the nurse at the pain clinic recommended she attend a safe and gentle Feldenkrais® lesson. She would learn how to move in new ways to reduce the irritation produced by excessive tension in her body. This would indirectly reduce her inflammation and pain and also slow down joint deterioration. The Feldenkrais Method of movement was developed in Europe by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais and brought to the US in the 1970s. The technique is taught in individual settings known as Functional Integration® and in group settings known as Awareness Through Movement®. Both formats use gentle movement and directed attention. Clients are led through a sequence of

53

movements which allow them to let go of unconscious tension and stress, become more aware of movement alternatives, and discover more fluid and efficient ways of moving. A Feldenkrais lesson starts with comfortable easy movements that gradually evolve into greater range and complexity done sitting, standing, or laying down on the floor or therapy table. The Feldenkrais practitioner gives verbal directions and uses gentle hand pressure to move the client’s body in sequences that may mimic common things that are challenging for people with arthritis, for example, holding a coffee cup, brushing one’s hair and putting on shoes. Ralph Strauch, PhD, was trained in this work by Dr. Feldenkrais and has a robust therapy practice near Los Angeles, California. People suffering from arthritis tend to have a lot of tension in their body. Ralph notes that the “tightening increases the compressive force holding the joint[s] together, amplifying the effects of the rough joint surfaces. This, in turn, makes movement more difficult and uncomfortable, leading to more tightening, creating a cycle which gradually worsens the arthritis.”

in turn allows…joint surfaces to slide more easily across each other, which are experienced as freer and more comfortable movement.” Mary selected a local Feldenkrais practitioner who offered individual sessions and had a background in healthcare. She was amazed at the variety of colorful rollers, bolsters, balls and balance-enhancing items. A low wide therapy table sat in the middle of the room. Mary was told that an important goal was to learn how her most basic movement functions are organized and to become more aware of her skeleton and its orientation. She would be given the opportunity to learn how to eliminate unnecessary energy expenditure and tension in her body. In effect, learn how to move smarter not harder! And what she liked best was that she was encouraged to learn at her own pace in a noncompetitive manner. After six Feldenkrais sessions and with a few minutes of simple daily practice at home, Mary’s arthritis pain was substantially decreased. She could raise her arm with comfort and the deep nagging throb in her knees was now gone. Don’t let arthritis drain your vitality - find a Feldenkrais practitioner and say good-bye to pain!

Osteoarthritis According to the Arthritis Foundation® osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and affects 27 million Americans. Osteoarthritis is a complex disease with contributing factors of chronic inflammation, repetitive stress injuries, athletic injuries, excessive weight, and possibly genetic predisposition. The Mayo recommends:

• Do some gentle exercise in the evening; you’ll feel less stiff in the morning. • Quit smoking. Smoking causes stress on connective tissues of the joints, which leads to more arthritis pain.

Using Feldenkrais lessons, we can disrupt that cycle of pain and tension to reduce the compression that holds the joint surfaces together. Ralph notes that for his clients, “this

HOW BAD BREATH CAN AFFECT RELATIONSHIPS AND PROMOTIONS.

Downtown Gig Harbor 206-713-7169 www.bestbodymoves.com

BY DR. RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS.

Do you feel you might have bad breath? A concerned person may say something, but it’s really one of those topics that most don’t know how to address. Ironically, most people cannot tell if their own breath is bad. That’s because the human body has a process known as accommodation. Our body is designed to smell other noxious smells that might alert us to danger, versus really smelling ourselves. What can you do? Ask your dental professional, or ask a loved one and hope you receive an honest answer. Bad breath can cause social issues with relationships at home and at work. Typically, bad breath is due to gum and bone disease (also called periodontal disease) What else can cause this smell? Cavities, medical issues like digestive problems, or sinus problems. Your best reference is your hygienist or dentist. However, as a professional, we work behind a protective mask and we’re used to smells. As well, some people naturally have a keener sense of smell than others. Your feedback will depend upon whom you’ve asked, the honesty, directness (or lack thereof), and the perception of this person. The important thing to realize is that bad breath can affect your work, job advancement and relationships. Feedback from others may actually be a career saver. Karl, one of my patients, talked with me about this issue. Karl said, “There’s this guy at work. He does an awesome job, but every time he’s in the room, his smell lingers. Actually, the smell arrives before him. People avoid him because he smells so bad. What can I do?”

slipped it into his co-worker’s desk drawer. At Karl’s next dental visit, I inquired about his colleague. Smiling, Karl said, “The next time I saw him, it was obvious he went to a dentist. He didn’t smell anymore. I wish I’d had the courage to talk with him directly, but it was so awkward! I’m really thankful he took the hint from the brochure I planted in his desk.” A professional comprehensive cleaning can make a difference in career advancement and personal relationships. Also, the Philips Sonicare AirFloss is easy to use and can provide the equivalent of flossing. It’s good to know that 95% of humans effectively floss. The AirFloss is an amazing way to combat bad breath! In addition, your Philips Sonicare brush is an important tool; combating the breath barrier to your relationships. With these products, you’ll enjoy fresher breath and whiter teeth! The cool thing is this: Keeping your teeth healthy can extend your loved one’s life. Foul breath is a mere shadow of a much more insidious disease process. The patient’s mouth is a perfect bacterial breeding ground: It’s warm, moist, dark and the bacteria have a food source. I’ve been asked: How long can humans live, if they take care of their teeth? Many times, up to ten years longer on average, compared to those with poor oral health.

Nightshades FOODS THAT IGNITE INFLAMMATION.

BY DR. GLORIA GILBÈRE, GIG HARBOR. If you experience these disorders, you’re probably reactive to Nightshades. • • • • • • • • • • • •

Fibromyalgia/Arthritis/Bursitis Gout Lupus Scleroderma Carpal Tunnel Lymph Inflammation Migraines Gum Disease Inflammatory Bowel Tendonitis Alzheimer’s/Dementia Heart Disease

Continuing my commitment to identify foods and ingredients that accelerate inflammation, the Nightshade genre of foods are serious saboteurs that must be avoided by most in order to achieve relief and recovery from inflammation. Brain-signal Interrupters An allergic response to a nightshade is a serious response not well known to the general public or conventional medicine. Nightshades are a group of foods containing a chemical known as solanaceae or solanine – alkaloid chemicals that can be highly toxic and scientifically identified to accelerate inflammation. The solanine in nightshades is a powerful inhibitor of an enzyme called Cholinesterase, originating in the brain and responsible for brain-messages signaling flexibility of muscle movement. Solanine interferes with muscle movement messages – leading to stiffness, inflammation and pain that can last for weeks – often not connecting symptoms or fibromyalgia flare-ups to consumption of nightshades, listed below: Tomatoes, tomatillos, potatoes (all varieties but NOT white sweet potatoes or orange yams), peppers (red, green, yellow, pepper flakes, cayenne, paprika, chili powder, etc.), eggplant/okra, blueberries/huckleberries/

56

LIVINGLOCAL

Goji berries (not specifically nightshades but contain same alkaloid chemical), artichokes, Tabasco™/Worcestershire™/A1™ sauces, and any ingredient listed as spices, flavorings or seasonings usually contain nightshades and/ or hidden MSG. Note: The condiment black, white or multi-colored peppercorns are not nightshades. Beware of Vodka or any liquor made from potatoes. Challenge Period Millions are afflicted with some form of inflammation and pain – estimated at 83% of the U.S. population. Many affected have gone on a three-month, no nightshade challenge diet and report their symptoms are not relieved – mostly because they consumed “hidden” sources unsuspectingly. For maximum health benefits, the recommended time to be completely without nightshades is 90 days. The challenge is there are progressively more hidden sources to sabotage your efforts. For example, potato starch is used in some frozen seafood and gluten-free products. Ingredients labeled “natural flavoring” or “natural seasonings” usually contain paprika, cayenne and/or potato starch, not to mention other ingredients that also accelerate inflammation, which I’ll cover in my next article. Dr. Gilbére, Founder/CEO of the Institute for Wholistic Rejuvenation, is also an acclaimed author of 18 books, talk-show host, creator of 8 post-graduate courses and over 1,700 health articles. She consults worldwide via telephone and Skype and in Gig Harbor, WA. She invites you to visit www.gloriagilbere.com or call 888.352.8175. *As a special offer to readers of Gig Harbor Living Local, download a FREE eBook describing the science/implications of nightshade foods and their contribution to inflammation – enter into browser: gloriagilbere.com/painbook and enter Coupon Code: gigfeb15.

Chiropractic Care and Your Heart FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH.

BY SUSAN HOFFMAN. Heart disease is our nation’s number one killer of women and men and costs our country over 300 billion dollars in health care costs. The human heart is a symbol of love, and the month of February is a good time to love yourself by learning about the risks for heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. Like most diseases, family history and genetics play an important role and we can’t change these risk factors. However, lifestyle choices such as smoking, excessive weight, stress, lack of physical activity, and diets high in saturated fat can be changed and modified. In addition, it has been proven that chiropractic care can be very effective in preventing heart disease. Research has shown that Chiropractic adjustments to the upper part of the neck can have a positive effect on significantly lowering blood pressure for an extended period of time. In addition, chiropractic adjustments often normalize and balance our cardiac rhythms. In a case study of a 54-year-old man who had high cholesterol and was taking more than 10 medications to treat it, chiropractic care made a difference. After six months of chiropractic visits, the subject’s lipid panel was normalized. And this was without diet and exercise modifications. His chiropractor, Dr. Nate Blume, explains that “research is revealing that minor disturbances to spinal alignment and function may be a factor in a number of disorders. These spinal disturbances lead to nerve interference and can result in a host of disorders because the body’s homeostatic mechanism is thrown off.” Good Morning America aired a report from the Journal of Human Hypertension, claiming that “one upper cervical chiropractic adjustment has the same effect as two pills designed to normalize blood pressure.”

and skeletal depend on our nervous system. If our spine and joints are misaligned and irritated, we are at risk for disease as well as back pain, neck pain, headaches, and high blood pressure. As much as we all use the Internet to seek health information, it is always preferable to work with a trained health care professional to avoid an inaccurate diagnosis. Your healthcare team should be able to provide you with support, guidance and answers to any of your questions or concerns. Our hope is to be proactive in preventing ill health, and with heart disease we should do our best to eat healthy foods and drink clean water, exercise regularly, avoid smoking, limit alcohol use, maintain a healthy weight, and reduce stress for emotional and spiritual well-being. The future of healthcare is unknown, but we know the cost continues to increase. There is some encouraging news from insurance providers, however, that the medical industry has begun to accept chiropractic care as both beneficial and costeffective. Hopefully this will be part of your decision the next time you need a medical evaluation.

Fresh, Local & Delightful LOCAL FROZEN YOGURT STORE FOCUSES ON QUALITY AND COMMUNITY. BY PATTY HUTCHENS.

Friendly staff and enjoyable atmosphere. Awesome yogurt. Bright, friendly and festive. These are just a few things the patrons of Gig Harbor’s Yo! G’s are saying about the Harbor’s premier self-serve frozen yogurt store.

donated to that group. Their employees also stepped forward and offered to donate their tips from each Tuesday to the given cause. “To date we have worked with over 40 charities or school groups and donated thousands to local nonprofits and school groups,” said Rebecca.

At Yo! G’s Gig Harbor you will find ten delicious flavors that are changed regularly to provide even more variety. They provide over 60 toppings including fresh fruits and berries, coffee, locally made chocolate sauces and brownies, nuts and candies. If you have special dietary needs, the yogurt choices include dairy free, gluten free and sugar free options.

Rudy, who served in the military for 22 years and has extensive experience in running commercial kitchens, is a large factor in Yo! G’s success. “We are proud to be small business owners in the Harbor,” said Rudy. In line with their mission to support the local economy, Yo! G’s uses several local business and farms whenever feasible for as many of their products as possible. Their yogurt is fresh, not a powder, and is delivered to them from Portland.

Owners Rudy and Rebecca Kaldor opened the shop in April 2012 and are proud to be a local, family owned and operated business. They share that their search for a place to launch their business brought them here, as it is a community whose values reflect their own as business owners. Their goal? To build a business that contributes to the local economy, provides jobs, and gives them an opportunity to give back to the community.

Rudy and Rebecca said they enjoy hosting birthday parties and are happy to do special events. And in recognition to those who serve our country and community, they offer military, fire and police discounts as well as senior discounts.

One way in which they give back to the people of Gig Harbor is through their weekly Take Over Tuesdays promotion where they open their doors to a community group, school group, or charity, and a portion of their sales that day is

DESTINATIONNORTHWEST

Lotsa Lochsa A wild four-season adventure. By Jessica Herbig.

Nestled in the Lolo Mountains in rustic central Idaho, close to the Montana border, is a beautiful lodge. It’s a place where you can while away your day soaking in some natural hot springs and relaxing while you escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You can find Lochsa Lodge in Idaho, 57 miles west of Missoula, Montana on U.S. Highway 12, over the Lolo Pass on the Idaho/Montana state line.

is located just 20 miles west of the Lodge. Each are natural backcountry hot springs that are accessible year-round by a short drive and a 1.5 mile hike.

Rich in history, the original Lodge was built in 1929 as a commercial hunting lodge. The area is what was once considered the heart of some of the wildest country in the lower 48 states.

Weir sits up on a rock ledge, overlooking the creek and a beautiful old-growth glade of cedar, fir and pine. Both springs provide wonderful opportunities to observe wildlife while soaking away your cares.

A chimney fire destroyed the old historic lodge in 2001, but construction began immediately on a new lodge made of hand-scribed logs. The new building includes a library/meeting space, river view deck, gift shop, dining room and tavern. There are no guest rooms in the main Lodge, but a series of smaller lodges and cabins are available surrounding the main building to give a variety of options for every budget. The Lochsa Lodge is open every day, year-round, including holidays, with a restaurant on-site that runs the same hours, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner alongside amazing views.
