ongratulations! We all made it through the first month of the new year. As February has arrived, with it comes the holiday we all equate to romance, roses and … love—Valentine’s Day. But this year, as we continue to embark on new journeys, take this month as an opportunity to focus on not only the love you show others, but yourself. Self-love is too often overlooked. But if we don’t nurture our own bodies, minds and spirits, exemplifying love for ourselves, how can we possibly extend love to those around us?
• Caring and experienced medical team. • Home physician and transportation to medical appointments provided. • Entertaining activities for residents. • Serving Gig Harbor and the surrounding community for 20 years.
In this issue, we have put together content that focuses on self-care and how important it is that we dedicate time for ourselves. The happier we are with ourselves and our own lives, the easier it is to extend that joy beyond ourselves and share it with those we care for.

‘To Thy Own Self Be True’ WHY YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON SELF-LOVE FIRST By Jennifer ‘Taz’ Vazquez, Life Coach

or flight” perspective is how we see the world. To flip it, notice positive thoughts and experiences. Challenge yourself to list five ways you showed up for yourself or said something positive about yourself.
Many people feel they either need to be in a relationship or are lonely if they are not. When did celebrating being in any relationship become a measure of our self-worth?
2. Mindfulness: Focusing on the present, and awareness of limiting beliefs and negative thoughts. In a curious, non-judgmental way, ask what memories these thoughts/beliefs are associated with. Gently challenge them by looking for instances where they are not true. It helps soothe our inner critic and helps us feel calmer and more creative.
It got me thinking, what if you could have the Valentine’s Day you always wanted? Well, you can. Just focus on the most important relationship in your life ... the relationship with yourself! Shakespeare once said, “To thy own self be true.” When we really love and accept ourselves, we show up in life more authentically, feel alive and genuinely love our life. There are six steps to being true to yourself: 1. Mindset: The lens through which you experience life, your world and reality. Studies say we have over 60,000 thoughts a day, of which 95 percent are repetitive, and 80 percent of those are negative! This “fight 22

3. Gratitude: Genuinely acknowledge what you appreciate about yourself and your life. Practiced regularly, gratitude improves overall health, wellbeing, resilience and sleep. It also increases life, job and relationship satisfaction. Challenge yourself to name six things you are thankful for about yourself and about your life. 4. Self-care: What you deliberately do to give yourself the grace, compassion and care you need. Maybe it’s setting boundaries, taking

Self-care is also remaining in integrity with who you are. Ask yourself if your beliefs, thoughts, actions or the people in your life are serving and supporting you. If not, change it. 5. Forgiveness: A conscious decision to release resentment or negativity toward yourself and others. When we harbor resentment, we give up our power and waste so much energy. Typically it ends up hurting ourselves more. Try writing a letter for yourself. Acknowledge the hurt, state how it has impacted you, and accept you cannot change the past. State what you need in specific terms for the future. Lastly, state that you choose to forgive yourself (or the person), without expectation. Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting (or condoning) but letting go, so you can move on and give yourself closure. 6. Action. Continually taking small, consistent action steps forward. Love is a verb. care. It puts our thoughts into positive practice. Don’t forget to celebrate the small wins. Even if imperfect, forward consistent action adds up to big changes over time. While a healthy relationship can enhance your life, just as friendships and other relationships can, you have to be true to yourself first. Use this month as an opportunity to celebrate and reconnect with yourself by practicing these six steps. What is one thing you can do to deepen your relationship with yourself? “I help you discover what sets your soul on fire. Sharing a Home While Separating SIX TIPS TO PEACEFUL COHABITATION
T
By Felicia Soleil, Family Mediator/Attorney
his is the time of year when separating or divorcing couples often decide to put the family home up for sale. Often due to financial reasons, many transitioning couples elect to remain residing in the home together until it is sold, regardless of the status of their legal case. Obviously, this can lead to awkwardness, discomfort and downright simmering, if not overt, hostility within the household. As a family mediator and lawyer, I strongly encourage early professional assistance to help couples establish some ground rules and boundaries if cohabiting through the choppy waters of dissolving their intimate partnership. Obviously, the major goal here is to identify the most common triggers of conflict and minimize them. Here are some tips: 1. Define and respect your separate spaces. Most of my clients in these situations have already created their own bedrooms or established an “upstairs/downstairs” arrangement for privacy. This can work well if each party agrees to only enter the other’s private space by invitation or consent from the other. (And no yelling through closed doors, please.) 2. Create rules for sharing communal areas. Unless your home has a separate or attached independent dwelling unit, chances are you’ll need to share at least a kitchen. What does that mean for food in the cabinets and refrigerator? Will you each purchase and prepare your own meals, or will you share groceries and meal times? If you have children, will you continue with family meals, or will meal planning be part of “on-duty parenting” with assigned days of the week? How will you handle kitchen cleanup? What about the TV room? Do you need a schedule for use of the big-screen or other entertainment devices? And how will you handle your laundry? 3. Establish responsibilities for household chores. If you are like most couples, these were probably never specifically defined while you were together. Now is the time to be specific and for each person to take responsibility for their own duties and do those chores without having to be asked or reminded. Remember, you are trying to minimize conflict here, so do your part and always clean up after yourself, regardless of the habits established during the marriage.

4. Define parenting responsibilities. If you have children at home, how are you going to co-parent while separating from the other parent in the same home? Will you have “on-duty parent” days where one of you takes responsibility for the children’s needs and the other parent makes themselves scarce? This can be a good way to practice single parenting and getting the kids used to the separation while in the comfort of their own primary home. Be clear with each other, and be clear with your kids, and seek input from a family therapist if needed. 5. Define how shared expenses will be paid until the house sells. Will you still operate out of a joint account and contribute all of your incomes? Or will you separate incomes, establish any support obligations, and share living expenses? In my experience, couples with the best intentions to maintain joint accounts until one moves out or the house sells often begin to feel resentful if they can’t begin to establish their own bank accounts after a few months of cohabiting. Anticipate this and try to plan accordingly. 6. Have a plan for considering offers on the home. How much will you agree to rely on your realtor’s recommendations when offers come in? Don’t be swayed by too low an offer just because you want out of the situation. Be attentive to your emotional responses pertaining to the home at this time so you don’t self-sabotage your financial wellbeing. Remember, this situation is temporary, and the goal here is to minimize the triggers that can cause conflict while striving for peaceful cohabitation until separation is feasible. If you aren’t comfortable establishing boundaries and ground rules on your own, seek early mediation, work with a therapist or consult with an attorney. “I interview the merchant and we shop around the store, and Josh films as we chat. We started right after Labor Day with The Beach Basket,” says Karrie. As of press time, they had just finished filming their 10th video in just three months—Sharon’s Resale Boutique.
After discussions and suggestions, their concept was decided, and “Treasures on the Waterfront” was born.
“We [always want] to make the merchant happy and proud. We are here to support them and spread the word of what the merchant wants everyone to know about their business,” Karrie shares. “This all wouldn’t have happened without the support of the Downtown Waterfront Alliance. It is our mission to support our business on our Main Street.”
arly last year, as the COVID-19 pandemic continued, Gig Harbor resident and manager of Tickled Pink Karrie Polinsky had an idea: for local merchants to shop in each other’s businesses and promote one another. But the idea didn’t end there. She thought, why not film it too? “We don’t realize how many amazing places to shop and dine there are downtown,” shares Karrie. “So I brought the idea to the Downtown Waterfront Alliance and our Promotions Committee, which I am the chairperson for, to see what everyone thought and how we could go about it.”
“The Alliance’s goal is to encourage patronage of our downtown businesses while increasing awareness in the Gig Harbor community of the many special ‘treasures’—the special places, people and things— that can be found on Gig Harbor’s downtown waterfront,” says Josh Sherwin, special projects coordinator for the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance. A list was compiled and emails sent to all downtown merchants asking if they would be interested in participating in the series. The response was positive, and interest continued to grow. Josh and Karrie began “discovering” each of these unique businesses one by one to share with the community. 30

It takes approximately 12 hours over the course of several days to create a “Treasures” video.
The series has received positive support from both the downtown businesses and the community as a whole. “While Josh and I have been out filming, we’ve been stopped by people out walking while we are filming and saying they are enjoying our videos. It is awesome. This is what we were hoping for. Our town is fantastic.” To view Treasures on the Waterfront, visit GigHarborWaterfront.org/treasures-on-the-waterfront or Facebook.com/DowntownWaterfrontAlliance.

ince launching in April of last year, more than 5,000 meals—with a cost equivalent to more than $32,500—have been delivered to community seniors through the Shelter-inPlace Meals program, which was established by the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. “While this is an amazing program that provides nutritious meals to our community seniors, which is extremely important especially during a time like this, more importantly, it provides recipients a moment of joy each week when they receive their meals from delivery volunteers,” shares Ariel Gustanski, COO for the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. “The smiles and gratitude are the most rewarding aspect of the program.” As seniors are in the highest risk demographic during the ongoing pandemic and are encouraged to shelter in place as much as possible, this program ensures they are guaranteed to be provided a nutritious meal weekly. Not only that, many seniors are experiencing isolation more than ever right now, and this program allows the Gig Harbor Senior Center to have “touchpoints” and have face-to-face
wellness checks with community seniors—not just Senior Center members. “COVID-19 has isolated the most vulnerable senior demographic for the past 10 months; many of whom live alone, or away from family, resulting in potential irreparable consequences—depression, obesity, mental health issues, lethargy and declining health,” states Ariel. “The opportunity to visit with them briefly while dropping off their Friday meal engages each senior with a chat to gauge social, emotional and physical state of being.” All meal recipients must be 55 or older and live in the Key Peninsula and Gig Harbor community. Each week, approximately 20 volunteers are needed to make this program happen, door to door; from staff donating their time to organize meal orders and add new individuals to the correct route, to the team that organizes the meals by the delivery routes, to the amazing volunteers who deliver the meals to recipients. “We couldn’t do it without their time and amazing support,” smiles Ariel. And thanks to their dedication, nearly 225 seniors benefit weekly from their services.

“THIS PROGRAM TRULY WOULD NOT BE WHAT IT IS TODAY WITHOUT OUR VOLUNTEERS, DONORS, PARTNERS AND SPONSORS.”
“When we first launched the program in April 2020, we had no idea what this program would become,” says Ariel. They first kicked it off with community businesses coming together to sponsor the event, anticipating it would last a month or two based on funds raised (each meal is at a cost of $5). With a $3,500 grant that came in in mid-May, as well as private donors sending in funds for the program, and even meal recipients donating what they could, Ariel and her team realized that this program would at least be able to carry through until mid-June. “Unfortunately, due to funding, we had to put the program on pause for the month of July, but that did not mean that we were not fervently searching out grants and sponsorships,” affirms Ariel. “Luckily, we were able to launch the program back up in August and have been carrying out the program each week, even holiday weeks on an adjusted delivery schedule, until now. This was much thanks to donors, sponsors and CARES Act-82 funding.” Through the program, each meal recipient receives one meal per week (all meals are kept at cool temperatures and include heating instructions). Seniors have a weekly choice between five different options and place their meal orders by Tuesday of each week. The order is then placed with the kitchens on the Wednesday prior to Friday’s delivery. “Accompanied with their meal delivery they receive the opportunity to have a safely distanced chat with our volunteer drivers, and see a smile,” Ariel adds. Restaurants BBQ2U and YMCA Camp Seymour have been vital to the success of this program since its inception. “This program truly would not be what it is today without our volunteers, donors, partners and sponsors,” says Ariel. “Without these four groups, this program would not be possible at all. Truly, we cannot not thank 34

those that help us on a weekly basis, those that support our efforts, and those that help us make it happen financially, enough.” With thanks to Gig Harbor Rotary and private donors, they will be able to continue the program until the end of February. “We wish we could continue this program until restrictions are lifted and it becomes safer for seniors to be able to again be out in the community and with loved ones, however, we cannot do so past the end of February at this point due to lack of funding,” shares Ariel. If individuals are interested in helping this program continue, whether through being a volunteer delivery driver or making a financial contribution, please reach out to Ariel Gustanski via email at agustanski@ gigharborfoundation.org. Those who would like to place a meal order or be placed on the waiting list (based on how many recipients they have at the time of contact) can reach out to Ariel as well.

ith a long, successful career in graphic design, real estate may not have seemed the next logical step for Tiffany Place. But her background in design cultivated an eye for detail and a creative vision for home-improvement possibilities. In the past threeand-a-half years since establishing Tiffany Place Real Estate with Windermere Real Estate Gig Harbor, Tiffany’s newest endeavor, with respect to her past, has given her the ability to market homes effectively with professional staging, professional photography and videos, professional graphics and advertising. “My background in design enables me to provide my sellers with professional marketing and advertising of their property,” says Tiffany. “Prior to listing their home, I’m able to guide my sellers with home-improvement possibilities that will ensure top dollar for their home. I also provide complementary professional home staging and high-end photos and video tours that are essential in today’s market.” Originally from Sarasota, Florida, Tiffany moved extensively throughout the South and Midwest during her childhood and young adult years before settling in the Pacific Northwest, when she accepted a job at a corporate graphic design firm in Seattle in 1999. Six years later, she and her growing family would move to North Tacoma’s Proctor District, where they resided for eight years. Today, and for the past seven years, they have called Gig Harbor home. “I’ve been living

in my dream location and loving Gig Harbor!” shares Tiffany. “Every time I walk the harbor, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful city. I love our tight-knit community and how people are always willing to lend a helping hand.” She is grateful to not only live here but run a successful agency, where she provides residential real estate services for both buyers and sellers. She finds fulfillment and inspiration each and every day through the career she has chosen, thriving on the new experiences and the diversity. “I love meeting new people and touring new listings. I find the process of guiding people through one of the biggest decisions of their life very rewarding,” Tiffany shares. “I get excited to write up a competitive offer, thrilled when we find out our offer was chosen and love handing over the keys to my client’s dream home—and knowing that I helped make that happen.” With her friendly and easy-going attitude and her calming influence under pressure, Tiffany helps alleviate the stress—which is commonly associated with the home buying and selling process—for her clients, creating a positive experience for all parties involved.
In addition to serving her clients through her successful real estate business, Tiffany is the board president for Peninsula Hands On Art, a nonprofit providing art lessons to all of the elementary schools in the Peninsula School District. As part of Windermere Real Estate and in conjunction with the Windermere Foundation, a portion of the proceeds from every home purchased or sold using a Windermere agent—like Tiffany—go toward supporting low-income and homeless families in local communities. Now encompassing 10 states, the foundation has raised more than $41 million for programs and organizations that provide shelter, food, children’s programs, emergency assistance and other services to those who need our help most. Over the last 31 years, there have been over 430 organizations supported, and thousands of lives changed. Tiffany is proud to be a part of this wonderful and giving organization. In her free time, when not helping her clients or giving her time back to her community, you can find Tiffany hiking, skiing, paddle boarding and enjoying the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. If you are looking to sell or are in the market for a new place to call home, let Tiffany Place Real Estate with Windermere Real Estate Gig Harbor help guide you on your journey home. GIG HARBOR IN FOCUS THE ‘ONLY’ IN THE ROOM A CONVERSATION ABOUT LEADERSHIP, COLLABORATION AND SUPPORT BY ABIGAIL THORPE
A
fter graduating from the University of California, Berkeley in the 1990s, Nancy Harris, president and financial planner at New Foundation Wealth Group in Gig Harbor, went directly into working in finance for a Japanese firm. The financial industry has long been male dominated, but during this time it wasn’t unusual to be one of the only women in the room, particularly if you were in leadership. At a Japanese firm, this was even more pronounced. But she never questioned whether she should be there, she knew she could do just as well as the man sitting across the office from her, she worked harder, and the rest came in time. This story is not unusual for many women in the workplace, particularly for women in financial, tech and banking industries, among others. When it comes to leadership and the C-suite, it’s even more of an “only” situation. You’re often

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
the only—or one of the only—women in the room. But the tale of women in the workplace is not without its successes. If you look around the world there are several women leading countries, more heading up companies, and millions inspiring change. We’ve come a long way since women gained the right to vote a hundred years ago, but there’s still work to be done. From January 2015 to 2020, women in senior vice president positions grew from 23 to 28 percent, and those represented in the C-suite grew from 17 to 21 percent, according to a Women in the Workplace study conducted by McKinsey and Company and LeanIn.org. But women, and particularly women of color, are still significantly underrepresented in management and leadership positions.
Despite the stats working against them, women continue to climb the ladder and challenge the status quo. But perhaps the greatest success is found in working together. “Success looks like having women at all levels of leadership who are working together to enable others,” says Kathy Keele. “Success looks like a world where there aren’t two sets of standards. Success looks like an appreciation how women can bring great skills and leadership to the table in their own right.” Keele is the current chair of the advisory board at the Milgard Women’s Initiative but worked for many years in business development, as a head of marketing, and finally as the CEO of the Australia Council for the Arts. Like Harris, she’s experienced her fair share of being an “only,” but she’s also found inspiration
and encouragement from other women and men who have opened up conversation and served as mentors for her and other women in the workplace. “For me, seeing women leaders throughout the world, those women are inspirational,” she reflects. “It isn’t so much about gender, it’s about them being skilled doing their jobs, and being tough in a way that’s just about confidence.” For Harris, she felt pressure to follow the status quo while working in large brokerage firms, and so she took a leap of faith and started her own financial planning group. It allowed her to do what she loves and build a culture of inclusivity. “I work with people who want advice and counsel as they manage and grow wealth,” she explains. “I define wealth much broader than just money. I think wealth is security, freedom,
fun, travel, generosity, building a legacy. It’s about what money can do for us.” And many women feel the same. More than 50 percent of entrepreneurs are women. Why? They want to make their own rules and define their own success. Jennifer Vazquez spent 25 years in the military, retiring at the rank of Colonel. She achieved much success in her career and has always been good at whatever she puts her hand to, but always struggled with a need to prove herself, a sense of not trusting or believing in herself. After a year and a half as the membership director of a local YMCA, she took some time to discover her passion and started a life-coaching business. Part of that journey was the process of discovering the support out there for women,
something she had never experienced. “I look back now and say, ‘Wow!’ The things that are in place for women in the workplace are pretty phenomenal now,” she shares. She discovered the incredible power of women coming together to support, celebrate and help one another. Success came from working together; “finding those that can help you tap into that creative, innovative side to then brainstorm or find solutions to issues, whether it’s issues in the workforce, how to broach gender differences, etc.” Vazquez, Harris and Keele all share varied roles in leadership, but they also define success as the success of others. Yes, women still have a way to go, but the process starts with each individual working together. “Knowing your rights, feeling confident enough GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

to know how to challenge those rights, supporting each other in those rights. Every person's win is your win too,” encourages Keele. That process of finding success starts with discovering your passion. From there, success means something different for every individual. “I think we need to define what having it all means for us individually,” explains Harris. “I try to always remember that I’m being of service, that what I do matters, I’m there for my clients, I’m paying the mortgage, I’m paying it forward.” As Vazquez, Harris and Keele have pivoted in their own professions, each has discovered a passion to give back. Their one common piece of advice is the same: Find a group of women who will support you, and be open to mentorship. “Be open. Be collaborative. Be supportive,” says Keele. “Women who want to be relevant can pay it forward in meaningful ways. Learn from each other in ways that aren’t agist and aren’t sexist.” Women need to be there for others, adds Harris. “We don’t need to compete with the other women, there’s plenty to go around. If we really want change, let’s support each other.” And there are growing opportunities to do so in Gig Harbor. Vazquez was introduced to a national organization called Women Belong by a newcomer to Gig Harbor: Claire Haasl. They soon started their own Gig Harbor Circle, and while the organization is membership based, it is truly about connecting with other women and finding professional, educational and mentorship opportunities. The Milgard Women’s Initiative that Keele serves as the chair of the advisory board for shares a similar mission of connecting, inspiring and supporting women. As part of the Center for Leadership and Social Responsibility in the Milgard School of Business at the University of Washington, Tacoma, the initiative advocates for all women and helps educate and connect graduate students with women leaders in the community. “We hope to contribute to the creation of a world where women are in a position of equality in the workplace and in their communities,” shares Keele. “There’s a lot of places that women participate and in different ways, and we’re trying to acknowledge that one way is not better than another.” 40

Jennifer "Taz" Vazquez Harris is the founder of the Women’s Influence Network, which aims to help unite and connect women who can strengthen, challenge and mentor other women, regardless of age and profession. Success is not about competition; it’s about working together to identify and fix the “speed bumps” as Harris refers to challenges women face in the workplace. “The truth is there’s more than enough, therefore we can collaborate, and if it’s broken, we can fix it. I think it’s important to let people feel supported,” she adds. In order to come to the table filled, and able to support others and achieve personal successes, however, it’s vital to practice self-care, whatever that looks like for each individual, encourages Harris. “Be curious, be open to learning new things,” adds Vazquez. “Be part of an organization, but not at your expense. Your health, and your mindset, and your love of life is not worth giving that up.” Success for women may mean many different things, but ultimately you have to believe in yourself, take risks and have gratitude. The future is bright for women, so long as we support, believe in and inspire one another to create a workplace that is different than today’s.

While these courses are sure to prepare Alex for a career in engineering and mathematics, his greatest passion lies in an entirely different setting. “My absolute dream is to be a composer. For about four years, I have been composing, mainly for larger ensembles such as concert band. For me, composing is a release of emotions that challenges me with uniquely complex problems.”

hile teachers will often tell you they learn a lot from their students, it’s less common that what they are learning comes from a lesson plan a student has drawn up. This is the case for Gig Harbor High School junior Alex Morgan and physics teacher Eric Wolgemuth. Alex was the only student at the high school interested in taking a calculus-based physics class. Despite no interest from other students, Mr. Wolgemuth didn’t want to see the opportunity pass by and helped set up a unique independent study program for Alex. “Once every three weeks, we get together on a Zoom call before school and talk physics. Afterwards, I prepare a lesson about a relevant concept of his choice and teach him about it. It is a rather untraditional learning environment fit for the most untraditional year of learning,” Alex explained.
Alex plays a multitude of instruments including, but not limited to, French horn, piano and trombone. He participates in both the school’s top concert and jazz bands. He enjoys writing compositions, and band director Eric Swanson even let him pass out his work to his fellow musicians so he could hear it done by the entire ensemble. “Mr. Swanson pushed the bounds of my composing abilities and has spent time with me after school revising my musical compositions,” Alex said. “Although these excellent educators are rather different, they both have gone well beyond what is required of them. They have made an impact on my life so great that it easily may have changed my course in life, and for that I am forever grateful.” Outside of school Alex recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout after 10 years in scouting. He plans on attending a four-year school after graduation and double majoring in music and physics with his eyes set on eventually pursuing a graduate degree. Until then, Alex, like his peers, is hoping for a chance to see his friends and teachers in person again and trying to make the most out of a tough situation. “I typically play instruments between Zoom calls throughout the day; music is a great break for me and never fails to save a bad day.

ne of the many challenges of high school students learning remotely is the amount of time spent staring at screens. Too much screen time can cause back and neck issues, headaches and trouble sleeping, and for those who’ve suffered a brain injury like Peninsula High School senior Katie Giesy, those effects are multiplied. “Since my brain injury, I am more prone to migraines, so the added screen time causes my headaches to be more frequent. To help with this issue, I am using blue light glasses and trying to use textbooks as much as possible as opposed to online books,” Katie explained. While not ideal, Katie keeps her spirit up by taking a challenging course load, helping out in her community and competing in dance. Katie is vice president of the National Honor Society and has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school. She’s also lettered
Having suffered a brain injury, Katie knows just how much such an injury can affect someone. She hopes one day to continue studying those affects so she can be of help to others who have experienced trauma. “I am currently looking into WSU in hopes to major in either neuroscience or psychology and would love to have my career be dedicated toward brain rehabilitation and psychology.” Katie’s favorite subjects in school are math and science. They interest her the most because they both continue to build, because no matter how many classes you take there is always so much more you can learn. She is also thankful for the many teachers who’ve helped shape her and prep her for life after high school. “I am grateful to have had several teachers who have made an impact in my life, especially Mr. Epstein, Mr. Pratz and Mr. Newton. These teachers have helped me in so many ways, especially in my return from my injury. They all made extra effort to help me academically and support me,” said Katie. “Sometimes brain injury symptoms are not visible from the outside, but these teachers always supported me on my recovery path. They were always incredibly kind, patient and understanding of my needs, and would always take the extra time to help me.”

PIERCE COUNTY RESTAURANT RALLY Our community rallies around local restaurants BY RACHEL KELLY
I
n November, date night got that much better during the countywide Restaurant Rally. Patrons (decked out in their COVID best), received 30 percent off their tickets just for ordering through one of the 300 participating restaurants. Restaurants, in turn, received a 50 percent refund of each ticket. The hope being that each restaurant would be propelled out of their recent hardships. And it seemed to be working! Some restaurants were reporting high numbers of solid income along with new customers. Then the gavel fell. During the last three days of the rally, new restrictions were announced that prohibited indoor dining. Some restaurants rushed to buy heaters for their patios, while others (without patios) fell back on takeout. The county responded quickly, unanimously voting to double the minimum reimbursement amount of all tickets ordered during the

rally. The first week of the rally tallied a reimbursement of $3.16 million in sales, and $3.22 million the second week. An additional $311,000 was refunded after the raising of the minimum reimbursement. Overall, the rally brought in new or hesitant customers, boosted the local economy and bolstered participating restaurants with much-needed income. A third of the restaurants were owned by people of color, and another 37 percent by women. The website dedicated to a listing of participating restaurants received over 40,000 hits in the first week. And through a combination of language interns, advertisement and in-person visits, a variety of cuisines were incorporated in the rally. Though there were many restaurants who opted out for various reasons, and some opted in on the second week, it’s safe to say that the rally was a success. It achieved what it set out to do.

Thriving local business contributes to local people, playing in a back-and-forth banter that benefits all involved.
As successful as the rally was in November, it was never meant as a solution. It was meant to rally—and rally it did. Our community has rallied, and rallied, and will continue to rally around our struggling local restaurants. Thriving local business contributes to local people, playing in a back-and-forth banter that benefits all involved. Our local business is made up of our local neighbors, and when they thrive, so do we. In our food we see a reflection of memory, comfort and safety. We celebrate, relax, relate and ruminate in restaurants. We share banter and laughter; we meet new people and connect with old friends. It would be a sad sight to see our neighborhoods lose these places of belonging; places where our neighborhoods come together. So where do we go from here? How do we preserve our local small businesses? What’s next in store not just for the physical health of our community, but for our mental, emotional, social and economic health? 46

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
Partly, the next step is up to the governor and other state officials, who have released a 2021 plan for safely opening up. I’m sure you’ve spent as much time pouring over the plan as I have, so there’s no need to rehash it here. However, arguably, the larger step is to be made by us. What comes next is up to you and me. It is our turn to rally. There are practical ways to do that. The first step being to look around. What restaurant is struggling in your area? Which restaurant is new? Which is old? Do they deliver? What about takeout? Do they have outdoor or indoor dining? What times are they open? If there ever was a time to explore what’s within close reach for you, it would be now. Your personal local involvement in what goes on in your neighborhood makes where you are a better, safer place to live. Not just that, but it reminds us all that here, we’re together. Here, we’re safe. Here, we can laugh. Here, we can live and eat every day. Here, we’re a community.

HOW DO WE PRESERVE OUR LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES? WHAT’S NEXT IN STORE NOT JUST FOR THE PHYSICAL HEALTH OF OUR COMMUNITY, BUT FOR OUR MENTAL, EMOTIONAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC HEALTH?
The second step would be to get involved. Join in on the conversation. There is a lovely little (large) Facebook group dedicated to dining in Pierce County full of foodies with recommendations and tips on local hideaways. There are local Instagrams dedicated to local food. There are local nonprofits and community organizations dedicated to local business and economic renewal. And if you’re not sure where to start, there’s always a lot going on at the Pierce County committee and council meetings. It’s online, with each meeting publicly listed ahead of time on the calendar. We are a county dedicated to its people, and without the voices of its people, it doesn’t thrive. The third step is simple: Be generous. It’s true that right now our capacity to give might be limited. Actually, it’s very likely that we’re all a bit limited
48

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
right now. However, there is always something. We are generous with our time, the moments that we give each other as we go through our day. We are generous with our grace, we allow each other an extra measure. Accounting for each other’s hardship. In the context of our neighborhood restaurants, we have the opportunity to be generous with our money. A little budgeted bit of money set aside to be spent at the local eatery, tip always accounted for. If eating out is normally a regular part of our life, then it still can be. It just might require a little more creativity (and bundling up) than usual. And restaurants are willing to help us along. Not only are there many restaurants doing takeout, but there are also several different eateries and bars that are holding outside or sidewalk dining. As a member of my community, and local Pierce County foodie Facebook groups, I can account for over 60 eateries with heated and tented outdoor spaces. More recently I went out in the driving rain to meet a close friend over wine. We huddled in our jackets next to a live flame, with a tent dividing us from the street. It’s true that the tent buckled. The cars were loud. The weather was intimidating. The sidewalk was busy. However, the food was delicious. And the company! Life sustaining. Something I’m sure we all could use a little bit of right now.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

A Keen Eye for
Design
25 years and going strong BY JILLIAN CHANDLER
BROADWAY DESIGN 253.224.5133 BroadwayDesign.net
“A well-appointed, peaceful home brings joy to life, resulting in families and friends coming closer together.”
F
or a quarter of a century, Deann M. Hammer has been transforming homes through her full-service interior design firm—Broadway Design.
Inspired by design from a young age, Deann grew up in Gig Harbor, where her mother was a Realtor, and her father owned a commercial radiant plumbing company. Her parents built her childhood custom home in Kopachuck State Park, with many floor-to-ceiling windows and massive skylight. “I have been hooked on creating spaces that bring in excessive amounts of natural light and incorporate the feeling of being enveloped in surrounding nature because I lived in that house,” she says. “I have an organic elegance in my designs and use many natural materials such as wood beams, wood paneling, interior rock or ledgestone walls.” Over the years, Deann has lived in Newport Beach, Marin County and Palm Springs, California, as well as Seattle. She credits living in these more heavily populated areas to helping her to develop her keen eye for design. She has worked for over 20 years as a general contractor, which sets her apart from other designers. Over the years, she has purchased and renovated more than 70 of her own personal homes! “I know how things are built and how to get to the finish line properly,” she says. “I have a very special creative eye and understand how to properly mix styles creating eclectic and timeless designs that exceed expectations.” In December 2019, she was featured in Architectural Digest as one of the leading designers of Seattle.

Deann assists her clients in selecting all finishes needed for construction including everything from cabinets, doors, millwork, windows, tile, hardwood, countertops, carpets, appliances and specialty lighting. “We draft furniture layouts and floor plans that take into consideration each client’s individual needs for maximum livability.” Furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories are all hand selected from Deann’s trade-only vendors around the world, who create spectacular one-of-a-kind pieces for her valued clients. “We make the process fun and have a low-stress, streamlined process,” shares Deann. “Our clients become part of our design family, and we truly enjoy watching their personal spaces and lives transform.” Deann attributes the success of her business to her trusting client base, who invests in her through their hearts and finances. She admits she was gifted her creative talent and hard work ethic from her mother. “My mom has always told me anything is possible. She is a tremendous guiding light!” Deann says. When it comes to what Deann finds most rewarding about the work she does, it is “creating a design that increases the value of a home but also adds emotional value for my clients so that they can live their best lives,” she smiles. “A well-appointed, peaceful home brings joy to life, resulting in families and friends coming closer together.”
She is proud to be a part of the local community, where she is able to provide work for local tradesmen in the construction industry. Deann has an “all hands on deck” mentality and firmly attests to the belief that “it takes teamwork to make the dream work.” As she says, “No design or construction project would be brought to life without the vendors and laborers who work tirelessly to complete our projects.” Deann is just as committed to various nonprofits and other important organizations as she is to her design business. She regularly donates a portion of her profits to Operation Smile and actively sponsors a child in Africa. She contributes to Draft Horse Rescue, The Humane Society, and 4Ocean, which cleans plastic from the oceans around the world. “I use much of my business income to be involved with positive change around the world.” A lover of horses, she is a dedicated dressage equestrian. “I love my horse community!” she smiles. “I ride my 6-year-old Lusitano I purchased in Portugal three to five days a week. It is inspiring to watch the younger riders commit themselves to the sport, and I am focused on supporting them reach for their dreams as well as achieve my own personal riding goals.” For those looking for an interior designer who is passionate, dedicated, and provides her clients with superior design, Deann M. Hammer at Broadway Design is ready to guide you on your epic journey toward transforming your home. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

EDUCATE YOURSELF Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletions By Conrad Esser, CEO and Nicholas Wyatt, CPO, Harbor Health and Apothecary
M
ore Americans than ever are taking prescription medications. In 2019, pharmacies across the United States filled approximately 3 billion prescriptions, and more than 131 million people, 66 percent of adults in the United States, use prescription medications. Doctors and pharmacists often discuss the common side effects of prescription medications such as drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and constipation. However, drug-induced nutrient depletions caused by the medication being prescribed are rarely discussed. Because drug-induced nutrient depletions are not part of the patient education, it is up to you to educate yourself on the nutrients that your medications deplete. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Do you know that acetaminophen is the number one cause of nonalcoholic liver failure in the United States? Acetaminophen is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Tylenol, and it depletes the liver of glutathione.
Glutathione is an antioxidant our livers depend on to detoxify ingredients like acetaminophen. When there is a deficiency in glutathione, our livers are not able to process toxins, like acetaminophen, and free-radical production and free-radical damage increases. A cascade of damage to the liver begins, and the end result could be liver failure. Glutathione is available as an over-the-counter supplement that can be used to reduce the likelihood of deficiencies induced by acetaminophen or other toxins. Harbor Health and Apothecary carries a liposomal glutathione that is formulated for enhanced absorption. Antibiotics We have all likely taken an antibiotic at some point in our lives. Antibiotics can deplete our stores of vitamin K, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, biotin, magnesium, calcium, folic acid, and wreak havoc on our gut's microbiome. Antibiotics that deplete our vitamin K stores can impact our liver's ability to produce blood-clotting factors. These factors are important when we

are taking medications like warfarin, the active ingredient in coumadin. Often, patients who are on antibiotics and warfarin are required to monitor their labs more frequently to ensure they are not at an increased risk of an adverse effect. Antibiotics do not discriminate in the bacteria they kill, so along with the bad bacteria, our good bacteria in our guts becomes collateral damage. Good bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium help keep a healthy bacterial balance in our guts. When these good bacteria are disrupted, it can lead to all kinds of health issues. Issues like a Clostridium difficile infection, which is a potentially life-threatening infection due to the overgrowth of bad bacteria in our guts. Disruption of our microbiome can also affect our immune system, mental health and skin. So, how do we address the nutrient deficiencies caused by antibiotics? A well-balanced diet is a good starting point, but even with a wellbalanced diet it is really difficult to get all the nutrients our bodies require, especially when the requirements are increased due to druginduced nutrient deficiencies. Supplementing your diet with a high-quality multivitamin and probiotic will even further reduce your risk of any potential antibiotic nutrient-induced deficiency. Harbor Health and Apothecary carries a multivitamin that only requires you to take two tablets per day as well as a highly potent probiotic. Acid Reducer There are two classes of acid-reducing medications: histamine-2 receptor antagonist, commonly referred to as H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors, commonly referred to as PPIs. H2 blockers include medications like famotidine, ranitidine and cimetidine. PPIs include medications like omeprazole, pantoprazole and esomeprazole. Despite the fact these medications are only intended for shortterm use, people end up taking them for years, which leads to an increased likelihood of a druginduced nutrient depletion.
These medications work by suppressing acid production in your stomach. This suppression of acid production increases your stomach's pH. This increase in your stomach's pH, by the suppression of acid production, leads to depletion of vitamin B12, folic acid, iron and zinc. Vitamin B12 deficiencies can lead to peripheral neuropathy, a numbness and tingling sensation in your hands and feet, anemia and depression. Folic-acid deficiencies can lead to anemia and depression. Iron deficiencies can lead to fatigue, depression, hair loss and anemia. Zinc deficiencies can lead to low libido, hair loss, rashes and fatigue. The easiest way to correct acid-reducer nutrient deficiencies is to discontinue the medication upon consultation with your provider. Most likely, you do not even need the medication. However, be aware that if you have been taking these medications for years then stop them without tapering off; it could lead to rebound indigestion or "heartburn."
LIVE YOUR HEALTHIEST LIFE We are excited to welcome the Gig Harbor Community to our opening!
COMPOUNDING PHARMACY HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTER CELL CODE SUPPLEMENTS
If you do need an acid reducing medication, then supplementing with a high-quality multivitamin with or without iron would be appropriate. If the multivitamin does not have iron, then adding an iron supplement would be appropriate—but make sure to take the iron supplement with vitamin C to enhance the absorption of the iron. Harbor Health and Apothecary carries the supplements needed to help reduce your risk of a drug-induced nutrient depletion caused by your acid-reducing medication. Chances are if you are taking a prescription drug then you are likely at risk for a drug-induced nutrient deficiency. We have only scraped the surface on which medications cause nutrient deficiencies and how to correct those risks of deficiencies. The Harbor Health and Apothecary team would love to be your trusted expert in solving your drug-induced nutrient-depletion needs. THE POWER OF BREATH SIMPLE PRACTICES WITH BIG IMPACTS By Sarahlynn M. Etta, Yoga and Meditation Teacher
O
ne of the most accessible, affordable, and yet most powerful tools we have available for self-care, is with us every moment of every day. Deep breathing calms and regulates the nervous system, and helps the body return to homeostasis. Yet many of us are stuck in shallow breathing patterns! The Benefits of Breath Engaging in regular breathing exercises may help to: - Improve mood and support mood regulation - Improve focus and enhance memory - Decrease anxiety and alleviate the symptoms of stress - Improve sleep quality - Support the immune system - Improve digestion - Decrease pain sensitivity - Boost energy and improve metabolism - Improve lung capacity and exercise stamina - Improve cardiovascular fitness and blood pressure
RESTORING WELLNESS one body & soul at a time
Deep abdominal breathing stimulates the vagus nerve. High vagal tone is correlated with improved physical and psychological wellbeing, improved cognitive function, improved mood, improved glucose regulation, reduced inflammation, and the ability to regulate the nervous system and cope with stressors. Stimulating the vagus nerve also improves heart rate variability, which further increases your resilience to stress. Mindful Breathing Mindfulness is the act of observing what is. Just breathing naturally, using the breath as a focal point for the thoughts, creates positive changes in the brain.

Try this: Sit or lie comfortably. Make no effort to control your breath; simply focus your attention on the sensations that arise with each inhalation and exhalation. Notice the movement of your body as you breathe. Observe your chest, shoulders, rib cage and belly. Set a timer for two to 10 minutes. When your mind wanders, return your focus to your breath. Controlled Breathing To reap the maximum benefits for both mind and body, engage in an intentional breathing practice. This involves consciously changing
the rhythm, pattern or depth of the breath, and different exercises have different intentions. Try this: Sitting at the edge of a chair, find a tall posture and relaxed shoulders. Breathe in and out fully through the nose. Count the length of your inhale and the length of your exhale. Begin to deepen each inhale, adding an additional second or two in length. Begin to slow your exhale, so it is slightly longer than your inhale. Consider adding a brief hold of the breath. At the top of your inhale (when lungs are completely full), hold the breath for two to three seconds. At the bottom of your exhale (with lungs empty), hold two to three seconds if comfortable. Set a timer for two to 10 minutes. Continue long, slow inhales and exhales through the nose, with or without breath retention. How Much is Enough? Try to practice at least a few minutes every day! Choosing the same time(s) and place(s) every day will help form a habit. If you can, strive for the The “365 Method”— at least three times a day, breathe at a rhythm of six cycles per minute (five seconds inhaling, five seconds exhaling). Breathe this way for five minutes. And do this every day, 365 days a year! Sarahlynn Etta is owner, movement educator and meditation guide at Maitri Movement & Massage. For more breathing exercises, or to sign up for a workshop, please visit MaitriMovement. com/breath.

ACTIVITIES FOR THOSE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA WAYS TO STAY ACTIVE AND ENGAGED

upporting and caring for those living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia is not always an easy task, especially when it is affecting a loved one. Navigating the best way to make life more comfortable for your loved one can sometimes be a difficult task, but we’re here to help.
can improve the body’s wound-healing process, prevent disease, foster greater independence and even increase mental capacity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that individuals age 65 and older try to incorporate at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise into each week.
Here are a few activities that are easy to do and may be a great bonding experience for you and your loved one to share.
Matching Card Game
Collage-Making This is an easy and fun activity for anyone and can help your loved one reminisce with positive memories of music, fashion and other interests they may have. There is no wrong way to create a collage, which makes it a lowstress activity that leaves you with a beautiful piece of art to display. Collage-making is part of the “Expressions of My Life” programming at Olympic Alzheimer’s Residence, which encourages residents to express themselves through activities like art, poetry and music. Clay Crafts Activities that include sensory stimulation can help those living with dementia stay engaged and improve cognition. Clay therapy is cathartic in nature and can provide creative stimulation, social interaction and help maintain fine motor skills while giving your loved one the freedom to express themselves artistically. Chair Yoga or Exercises If able, doing some light, seated exercises can have a positive impact on senior mobility and cognitive function. Regular daily movement
This is an easy game to set up and can be tailored to fit the needs of everyone. Most of us are familiar with the traditional way of playing a matching card game, by laying out cards and matching those with the same picture. However, you can take it a step further by printing out cards with photos that match the interests or hobbies of your loved one. They can match photos of plants if they’re interested in gardening, or celebrities from their favorite Hollywood era—the options are endless. At Olympic Alzheimer’s Residence, our residents benefit from activities such as these as a part of our Expressions Memory Care program, designed to help those living with dementia stay active and engaged while exploring the world around them. We understand the emotional and physical toll of caring for a loved one living with dementia and would like to assist you in your memory care journey, which is why we’ve developed a free Guide to Memory Care. Our Guide to Memory Care provides caregivers and those living with dementia a variety of resources and fun activities designed to keep them active and engaged in the comfort of their own home. Visit PrestigeCare.com/expressions to download your free guide today, or call the community at 253.851.5306 for more information.

INTRODUCING
SPACEX
MAJOR MILESTONES REACHED, SUPPORTED BY THE EXPERTISE OF NORTHWEST NATIVE BY TAYLOR SHILLAM
S
pace Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX, began with a billionaire’s dream of transporting humans to Mars.
Founded in the early 2000s by investor and business guru Elon Musk, the forward-thinking company has been behind a number of revolutionary firsts and major milestones in its first two decades as a company. According to CNET, Musk’s venture into the realm of space was rooted in the intention to buy a rocket as a publicity stunt to reignite the world’s excitement for space. The vision that began with a plan to purchase a Russian rocket turned into finding a way to build his own, with Musk’s creation of SpaceX. SpaceX is the only private company that has returned a spacecraft from low-Earth orbit—and its achievements don’t stop there. The company’s big victories began in 2008, when it became the first privately funded group to put a payload in Earth’s orbit. Its Falcon 1 rocket orbited Earth for the first time on September 28 of that year, paving the way for Falcon 9, it’s nine-engine version of the original Falcon. The first orbital class rocket capable of preflight, the Falcon 9 is a reusable, two-stage rocket designed and manufactured for the reliable and safe transport of payloads (meaning people, satellites or cargo, typically measured in terms of weight) into Earth’s orbit and beyond.

The two-stage Falcon 9 rocket is unique in its ability to transport its carrying load into orbit, then have its first stage return to Earth. Traditionally, a rocket’s stages are due to the high amount of fuel required to launch a rocket; once the first stage has emptied its fuel, it detaches and returns to Earth, allowing the second stage to continue on without the excess weight. An orbital rocket that has been used to launch satellites for a number of purposes and resupply the International Space Station, the Falcon 9 has now flown over 80 missions. Weighing over 1.2 million pounds, the Falcon 9 is nearly 230 feet tall and 12 feet in diameter. According to SpaceX, the rocket’s nine engines are gradually throttled near the end of first-stage flight, to limit acceleration as the rocket’s mass decreases with the burning of fuel. The engines are also used to decelerate the vehicle at landing time. The rocket has four landing legs, made from state-of-the-art fiber placed symmetrically around the base of the rocket to deploy just before landing. The Falcon 9’s successful upright landing and recovery in December 2015 was a major win for SpaceX, as that first safe and successful landing paved the way for the creation of the final version of Falcon 9: the Block 5 Falcon 9 rocket, designed to be refurbished for reuse of up to 100 times. According to Time, reusable, recoverable rocket stages that can touch down on dry land have been a topic of discussion for decades, with

the goal to reduce costs and bring speed to turnaround time, but SpaceX was the first to successfully make the concept a reality. SpaceX’s rockets are streamlined in terms of engine design and production; helping to reduce costs and outsourcing, as a majority of the company’s parts are produced on its own factory floor. Why the focus on reusability? It’s what allows SpaceX to supply the most expensive parts of the rocket, in turn driving down the cost of space access and potentially breaking barriers to taking space travel further than it’s ever been. The majority of rockets are designed to burn up on reentry, but SpaceX rockets can withstand reentry, to successfully return to Earth with the ability to fly again. Most of the cost from launching a rocket comes from building it; and historically, most rockets have only flown one time. SpaceX believes that a fully, rapidly reusable rocket is the required “pivotal breakthrough” to substantially reduce the cost of space access. According to SpaceX, a commercial airplane costs about the same to build as the Falcon 9 rocket, but will typically fly multiple times per day and conduct tens of thousands of flights over its lifetime. By their logic, if following the commercial model, a rapidly reusable space launch vehicle could significantly reduce the cost of traveling to space. Making any margin of progress in the realm of rocketry is significant, and SpaceX is in the business of redefining successful space transport. In May of 2020, the company’s Crew Dragon capsule, perched atop the Falcon 9 rocket, transported NASA astronauts to space. Launching from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, it was SpaceX’s first ever human-spaceflight launch. The May 30, 2020 mission also marked the first U.S. rocket launch with a crew of astronauts since 2011, when the shuttle era came to an end. Many of SpaceX’s earlier milestones led up to last year’s successful launch.
With 108 total launches, 71 landings and 50 reflow rockets, SpaceX continues to move forward and innovate, operating with their chief mission in mind: making humanity multi62

In 2008, the Falcon 1 became the first privately developed fuel rocket to reach the Earth’s orbit. In 2012, the Dragon spacecraft became the first commercial spacecraft to deliver cargo to and from the International Space Station. Then in 2015, the Falcon 9 rocket achieved the first-ever orbital class rocket landing, delivering 11 communication satellites to orbit. It’s easy for successes within the realm of space transport and rocketry to feel like tales from another planet. However, a connection to the works of SpaceX can be found closer to home in North Idaho native Jacob Katz, a senior guidance and navigation control engineer for the company. Katz has been involved in many of SpaceX’s innovative projects, including the Falcon 9 rocket. He will often see missions through from start to finish, figuring out the possibility of a proposed mission, designing a vehicle’s trajectory, programming its software and controlling its launch. The 2003 Bonners Ferry High School graduate has helped make possible the launch of several successful missions on behalf of SpaceX. Katz graduated from MIT, having studied aeronautics and astronautics before joining the company. Katz brought to SpaceX a unique background in both software development and engineering. After a string of unique internship opportunities including one with Jeff Bezos’ Seattle-based company Blue Origin, and successfully launching an international Robotics league with his father as a PhD student, Katz quickly became well-rounded in his field. The Falcon 9 missions and milestones have garnered a lot of media attention through the years, and Katz’s expertise has supported him in being involved in the navigation, trajectory and completion of several milestone flights. Young aspiring scientists can find inspiration in Katz’s success, a testament to the heights one can reach with a passion for their craft and a dedication to continue learning. Katz was raised by teachers and always wanted to learn more about the mechanics of how things work. Recalling an impressive simulation of a space shuttle crew mission in his fifth grade class, he remains thankful for the teachers who invested their time in opening his eyes up to the world. “It’s so valuable to support the school system,” Katz said, emphasizing his gratitude for the opportunities he was provided by great educators he encountered along the way to SpaceX—his father included. Katz contributed to the two astronauts successfully landing with the first flight of the Crew Dragon in May, and a second trip completed with four astronauts in November 2020. With 108 total launches, 71 landings and 50 reflow rockets, SpaceX continues to move forward and 64

from Mars to the sun being about 1.5 times the distance between the Earth and sun.
Musk, who has famously co-founded the major companies PayPal, Tesla Motors, and solar energy company Solar City, had no formal training in rocketry but has unsurprisingly found success with his creation of SpaceX, which holds its own among established companies like Boeing.
SpaceX plans to create a reusable transportation system capable of an orbit refueling and leveraging Mars’ natural H20 and C02 resources to refuel on the surface of Mars. The company states they are working on the next generation of fully reusable launch vehicles that will be the most powerful ever built, capable of carrying humans to the red planet and other space bound destinations.
Musk was the winner of this year’s Axel Springer Award, given by the media and tech company to innovative personalities who generate change and influence culture. The award recognizes achievement and encourages continued progress. The award-winning founder has a big vision for the company, having shared at the awards broadcast that he believes SpaceX can start sending humans to Mars by 2026, at the latest. Musk has discussed setting his sights on Mars on several occasions, with many eager to find out if his estimated frame is realistic. At a distance of about 140 million miles away, Mars is one of Earth’s closest neighbors. “It’s a little cold, but we can warm it up,” SpaceX states on their website, describing the distance 66

When innovative minds and revolutionary, forward-thinking technology are combined, there is truly no telling what distances can be reached.
Today, the Starship, a combination of their Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket, represents a “fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond,” SpaceX described, noting the vehicle’s ability to carry over 100 metric tons to Earth orbit. Starship 8 successfully launched and landed on December 8, 2020, showing promise for the model’s future endeavors. To see SpaceX vehicles in action, visit SpaceX. com or the company’s YouTube channel for videos of each Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy flights. Each launch is broadcast live online, with the launch schedule continuously updated on the Twitter feeds of both SpaceX and Musk. When innovative minds and revolutionary, forward-thinking technology are combined, there is truly no telling what distances can be reached. “It’s about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past,” Musk has said to describe his vision. “And I can’t think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars.”

Yourself ST R AT E G IES FOR S ELF -LOV E by TAYLOR SHILLAM
F
ebruary, the month so often associated with love, is the perfect time to direct some of that love back to yourself.
It’s often easier to give love away than to receive love, let alone provide it for ourselves. Self-love can sound like a cliché term or an unnecessary notion, but in reality, it’s an essential component of living well. The more we give and the busier we get, the more critical it becomes to prioritize time to refill our own cup.
In addition to positive thoughts, take regular inventory of your mental and physical well-being. Take note if you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, tired or in a rut—all signs to slow down, recharge and reevaluate. Pay just as much attention when you feel uplifted, recharged and positive, so you can spend more time on what ignites those feelings in you.
While you’re connecting with loved ones this month, remember to keep a strong connection to yourself. A bit of daily self-love can go a long way—below are a few simple ways to incorporate self-love this month and beyond.
Treat your body like the valuable vessel it is. Part of loving yourself is celebrating all the incredible things your body does for you each day. Prioritizing care for the most valuable vessel you’ll ever have is a critical component of self-love.
Listen to yourself. Self-love starts with the way you speak to yourself. If your inward thoughts don’t mirror the supportive, constructive way you would speak to someone you care about, it’s time to shift your perspective.
Keep mood-boosting endorphins flowing by identifying the forms of movement that make you feel good and doing them on a regular basis. Your muscles, joints and happy hormones will thank you for the regular breath of fresh air.
Changing the tone of your inner dialogue to be kinder and more uplifting can quickly help you feel more loved and inspired. Thoughts are powerful foundations that shape your outlook. Be intentional in building a healthy foundation for yourself.
Daily consumption of the whole foods that energize and fuel you, while including the foods you love and crave, encourages a balanced, sustainable approach to fueling your body. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

When you eat well and move often in a healthy balance, it doesn’t take long to start glowing from the inside out. Nourish healthy relationships. Pay attention to the people who make you feel more loved, more appreciated and more like yourself. Healthy relationships can boost your selflove, simply through the love you receive from those key people in your life. Whether that circle is large or small, quality is what matters most. On the flip side, identify the relationships that don’t serve you. Take the time to identify toxic relationships that could be in your life— relationships that feel one-sided, bring more negative qualities than positive, or that you’ve simply outgrown. Prioritizing yourself can mean re-prioritizing who you spend your time and energy on by setting healthy boundaries or stepping away from the relationships that keep you from your best, happiest self. Leave your comfort zone. Fill yourself with confidence and cultivate a healthy level of self-trust by taking a step outside your

comfort zone. Give yourself the opportunity to get spontaneous, try something new, and let go—you can learn a lot about yourself when you let yourself get uncomfortable. An opportunity to be vulnerable can be scary but will give you the opportunity to grow and the powerful knowledge that you can make it to the other side of an uncomfortable situation. The first step doesn’t have to be big. It can be as small as taking yourself to dinner or exploring a new place. Other highly doable options include taking up a new hobby, attending an event on your own, starting a conversation with a stranger or sharing your feelings with someone. Get creative—and get closer to yourself in the process. Get to know yourself. Never stop learning about yourself. Every step you take toward identifying your goals, your values, what you love in life and what you want from it takes you closer to your happiest, most loved self. Spend time with yourself, whether it’s a few minutes of daily journaling or meditation, or taking a solo adventure. The more you show up for yourself and learn about yourself, the more you’ll have to love.
Identify what you’re good at—and do more of it. Doesn’t it feel great to be a master at something? Ignite your self-esteem by using your talents, whether it’s making a recipe you’ve perfected, playing a sport you love or exercising your creativity. Playing to your talents can quickly boost your mood and bring you back to more of what you love about yourself. Celebrate yourself. Life has inevitable ups and downs that shape who we are. Self-love includes loving every part of yourself—your flaws, mistakes and times of challenge—and accepting them as opportunities for growth and strength. So, celebrate who you are: your wins, your losses, the experiences you’re proud of and the lessons you’ve learned. Every piece of your path matters, and it’s important to recognize how far you’ve come. As you enjoy February’s focus on love, remember to give some back to yourself. Love takes many forms, but one you always keep with you should cultivate your most important relationship: the relationship you have with yourself.

Olalla Winery & Vineyard
3
Open to the public since 2016, the small family owned estate has evolved into a unique boutique destination vineyard and winery, with a focus on agricultural tourism. Olalla Winery was recently awarded the 2020 winner of South Sound Magazine’s Best Winery and 2020 Best of Kitsap. Wine lovers will find several red and white varietals including Chardonnay, Viognier, White Bordeaux, Merlot, Mourvedre, Tempranillo, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Golubok. Winter Tasting Room hours, starting February 5, are noon to 6pm Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 5pm Sunday. Due to the ongoing pandemic, as seating is outdoors, there will be no tastings at this time, though there is still much to enjoy as wine by the glass or by the bottle is available. OlallaWines.com
Reed's Sweet Wine
4
A passion for growing fresh fruits in her orchard is what led to the creation of Reed’s Sweet Wines in 2014. Located in Tacoma, owner and winemaker Jessica Reed has taken her love of fresh locally grown pesticide-free fruit, most of which is grown in her own orchard, to create her signature non-grape based wines. You are in for a wonderful surprise as you sip a glass of these wines—each image on the bottle a representation of what your tastebuds will savor. Each small artisan-crafted single batch cannot be duplicated—and no two batches are ever the same! Be sure to call ahead (253.327.5220), as their tasting room does not keep regular hours. (At the time of print, sampling was not available onsite, though they offer sample packs and wine by the glass so go). ReedsSweetWine.com
Two Loons Winery
5
What started as a hobby blossomed into a nano-winery. At Two Loons Winery, located in Gig Harbor, you will find an atmosphere embracing the joy of making wine, drinking wine, sharing wine with others and talking about wine. Here the motto is “Hand Made Wine Hand Sold.” They like to get to know those who are purchasing and enjoying their wines, and invite wine lovers to stop in, taste, chat and enjoy. Red wines are barrel aged for two years and bottle aged for about one year prior to release; white wines are released at about the six-month mark. With more than a dozen offerings (including their Petit Verdot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Mourvedre, Granache, Merlot, Viognier), they’re sure to have something for everyone. TwoLoonsWinery.com

Celebrating more than three decades of winemaking and producing less than 600 cases of wine annually, Vashon Winery refers to itself as a “garagiste,” a term used in Bordeaux, France, used to describe garage-size wineries who make exceptional wines—without owning their own vineyards. Centrally located on Vashon Island in the middle of Puget Sound, they primarily use Bordeaux varieties of grapes grown and purchased from vineyards located in Eastern Washington as well as the Puget Sound AVA. A bit more acidic with a richer tannin level, the wines produced are unlike any other and described as "structured wines that improve with age." VashonWinery.com

PARK CITY, UTAH A flight in the morning and hitting the slopes by afternoon By Marguerite Cleveland
P
ark City, Utah, is one of the best destinations in the United States to ski—especially if you need to fly here. You can fly to Salt Lake City’s brand-new airport, which opened in September 2020. Its oversize baggage claim utilizes state-of-the-art technology to deliver ski bags vertically, eliminating the wait for oversize baggage. Accessing your rental car is a breeze with an entrance to the parking garage near the baggage claim. Arrive in the morning, and after a short 35-minute drive to Park City, you can hit the slopes the same day.
Park City really does live up to its reputation as a premier winter vacation destination. Alaska Airlines offers nonstop flights from Seattle and one-stop flights from Spokane. You can snag some great rates with their promotions. Usually, hotels and resorts are fully booked six months out, but due to the pandemic you can still find availability and some great rates. When you exit Interstate 80 on your way into Park City, stop at the Kimball Junction Center, the main visitor center for Park City. It’s a great spot to get recommendations for your visit as well as exclusive offers. They even have coffee. Also in Kimball Junction is an outlet mall and shopping. Where to Stay Park City offers a variety of lodging types in all price points. The Sheraton Park City offers a centrally located property and is a good fit for families. The complimentary shuttle does ski runs during the day to Park City Mountain, and in the evening runs to Main Street for dining and

slopes. Purchase lift tickets in advance, and those with epic passes must reserve their ski days.
What to Do
Historic Main Street is the place to be for dining and shopping. It is located on a hill, so wear shoes or boots with a good tread, as it can be slippery in the ice and snow. Make sure to allow time to visit the Park City Museum. This museum covers the early mining and skiing history, as well as the Sundance Festival. Great imaginative interactive exhibits bring that history to life. Sit on a train bench and watch historic videos from the “windows.” Experience being a miner and set off TNT for a simulated explosion. This is not a large museum, but all the space is well used. Adults and children alike will enjoy it.
People from all over the world flock to Park City for its famed dry powder snow, so it is no surprise the premier winter activity is skiing at two renowned ski resorts. Park City Mountain is the largest in the United States at over 7,300 acres. Deer Valley provides a luxury experience to their day guests. The pricey lift tickets include free parking and complimentary ski storage, and they limit the number of skiers on the mountain so there are no big crowds. Spread out over six mountains, this is the place to go for uncrowded slopes. Both properties have procedures in place for COVID-19, and you will be required to wear a mask on the
Utah Olympic Park is just a short drive from downtown Park City and is worth a visit. The main building houses two museums: the Alf Engen Ski Museum and the Eccles Salt Lake 2002 Winter Games Museum. Admission is free to both. Olympians from all over the world train and compete here, so you may have an opportunity to see a competition. The museums have some fun simulators. One lets you try your skill at ski jumping. There is also a Winter Bobsled Experience where you hurtle down the Salt Lake 2020 Olympic Winter Games Sliding Track with a professional pilot at the helm.
For a truly luxury stay, head to the Deer Valley Resort to stay at the Stein Eriksen Lodge. The authentic European lodge welcomes you from the moment you arrive with warm, crackling fireplaces and touches of Olympian Stein Eriksen’s Norwegian heritage. With opulent dining, great ski-in/ski-out access and a high-end spa, the lodge truly earns its Forbes Five-Star hotel and spa rating.

Where to Eat Dining in Park City is a treat, and there is such a variety at all price points. The Eating Establishment is located on Main Street and is a must for breakfast, which you can order all day. They have an interesting take on traditional egg dishes. Try the loaded baked potato omelet—it tastes as good as it sounds. For a true splurge, head up to the Stein Eriksen Lodge for their Alpenglobe experience. It is like being inside a snow globe. The clear domes sit on the deck of the Mountain Lodge and are climate controlled with a panoramic view of Deer Valley. Absolutely stunning. For a less expensive option, come up and enjoy breakfast at Glitretind. The Norwegian Potato and Bacon Pancake topped with poached eggs, Jarlsberg cheese sauce and cranberries is a unique memorable dish that makes it worth the drive to Deer Valley. Chimayo is located on Main Street and is such a special place. The service is impeccable, and the Southwestern décor and Mexican tile floor add a cozy feel. The freshly baked bread is served with a house-made cilantro bread oil that elevates this humble starter. At least one person at your table needs to order the Crown Roast of Barbecue Spareribs. It is one of those dishes that arrives, and everyone exclaims at the presentation. Caramelized chipotle-glazed spareribs are rolled to give the appearance of a crown pork roast and filled with mashed potatoes on a bed of hominy salpicon. Truly divine. The Silver Star Café is in the Silver Star Village. You’ll want to make dinner reservations, as it is very popular—especially with the locals. The owners focus on their “four legs of our table”: great food, ambiance, service and music (COVID-19 dependent). A must-try dish is the Pork Osso Bucco, which was featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. This meal has a lot going on with coconut creamed corn, nestled around 86

a locally sourced pork shank, and topped with fresh tomatillo salsa, cotija cheese, cilantro and pork jus. Two health notes: Park City has COVID-19 policies in effect to ensure your safety. Most restaurants are open for indoor dining with limited capacity. Shops and attractions are open as well. You must wear a mask for most activities and maintain social distancing of 6 feet. With an elevation range between 7,000 and 10,000 feet above sea level, you may experience some altitude sickness for the first 48 hours if you come from lower levels. Some symptoms include fatigue, headaches and nausea. The key is to drink lots of water, take it easy and avoid alcohol your first day or two.

Harbor History Museum
E
stablished in 1964, the Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society began operating as a museum in 1976. It wasn't until 2007 that it was established as the Harbor History Museum to communicate the essence of its mission: "To create opportunities to experience the heritage of the greater Gig Harbor communities." Today, the Harbor History Museum offers 7,000 square feet, where visitors can take in the permanent galleries that showcase the rich and unique heritage of the Gig Harbor Peninsula, highlighting its days of boat building and commercial fishing, to agriculture, logging and lumber. History is brought to life through unique artifacts, video kiosks, hands-on exhibits, computer interactives and a small theater. Their collections, which date from the mid-1800s to near present-day, connect to the people, places and events in Gig Harbor - Peninsula history, and include more than 29,000 artifacts, images and archival material.

TOP TEN THINGS TO DO
94
|
Explore by Water
Have a Ball
Whether by sail, powerboat, kayak, SUP or electric boat, much of the city’s charm and natural wonders are best seen from the water.
Entertainment options abound, from Galaxy’s IMAX theaters or arcade games, duckpin bowling and a laser tag venue at Ocean5 to creative art classes with AR Workshop.
Support Local
Make Friends
Gig Harbor’s independent boutiques, artists and specialty shops dot the harbor—visits to the Westside and Uptown business districts are a fun excursion as well.
Events and live music are a cornerstone of the harbor’s year-round calendar. From live music in the park to family movies, fall fun runs and cultural fundraisers, there’s always a gathering to suit any interest.
Tip a Glass
Take a Look Back
Brewery, winery, distillery—take your pick. Many favorites were born here in the harbor, and tastings are a great way to preview local libations. Drop in for a cocktail at Heritage Distillery, or try a local brew from favorites 7 Seas Brewing or Wet Coast.
Gig Harbor has a rich maritime history, showcased through gems like the Harbor History Museum or guided tours on the harbor’s Prohibition days.
Share a Plate
Tee Up
Inventive eateries vary from casual grab-and-go spots to fine dining and top-rated seafood shacks.
Hit the greens at several courses, including Madrona Links, the Canterwood Golf & Country Club or the Gig Harbor Golf Club.
Walk on the Wild Side
Capture the Moment
Grab a set of wheels and glide on the Cushman Trail, which winds through the harbor and connects to the Narrows Bridge. Nearby Sehmel Homestead Park offers hiking trails, play areas and gardens to explore.
In one of America’s most picturesque towns, photography options abound—choose from an array of backdrops: a lighthouse framed by Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound, sailboats dotting the harbor, or a beach set against the Narrows Bridge.

SHEPHERD’S PIE Recipe Courtesy of Tina VanDenHeuvel You can follow Tina @madebetterforyou on Instagram INGREDIENTS: 1 tbsp. avocado oil 2 tbsp. butter 2 lbs. ground beef 1 large onion 2 carrots, diced 3 celery stalks, diced 1 cup frozen peas 2 sprigs each rosemary and thyme 2 bay leaves 1 tbsp. tapioca starch 1 cup red wine 1 1/2 cups beef stock 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp. tomato paste For the topping: 1 large cauliflower 1/4 cup butter 1 tbsp. heavy cream 1/2 cup parmesan, shredded METHOD: • Heat 1 tablespoon avocado oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a large cast-iron pot set over medium heat. Add the beef and cook until brown. When done, remove the beef into a bowl from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. • Add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the pan and add onions, carrots, celery and peas. Season with salt and sauté vegetables until tender—about 10 minutes. Add the rosemary, thyme and tapioca starch and wine. Cook until wine has reduced to half. Add beef stock, Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste. Cook until sauce has reduced and thickened—about 20 minutes. Add in beef and simmer for 10 minutes. Pour into an oven-safe dish to cool. • In a large pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the cauliflower and cover with a lid to allow cauliflower to steam. Cauliflower is done when pierced with a fork and cauliflower is soft—about 15 minutes. • Remove cauliflower from the pot into a high-powered blender. Add butter cream and parmesan and blend until smooth. • Top meat with cauliflower and bake in a 350˚F preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
