PUBLISHER’S Crazy in Print Have you ever been told that you were crazy? Or that you will never make it? Maybe that your idea wasn’t that good? I can answer yes to these. When I decided to launch a media company with the idea of focusing primarily on print, I was told I was crazy. When we picked Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to be our first communities, we were told that we wouldn’t make it with the current competition. When we said that we will not only utilize print but also social media and web to push our clients’ brands, some said it wasn’t a good idea! Over the years I have learned a lot. Mainly, listen to your gut, be willing to learn new things, and be prepared to work harder than anyone else. I have been blessed with finding like-minded individuals that also believe in the same things and together we have accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. Examples of this can be demonstrated by the launch of our sixth publication, Edmonds Living Local, and the growth of our current magazines in each community we are in. What started as an idea, and a single 24 page Sandpoint, Idaho community magazine has, in just four years, grown into six monthly community magazines serving Sandpoint, ID, (where we have two publications), Coeur d’Alene, ID, Bonner’s Ferry, ID, Gig Harbor, WA, and Edmonds, WA.
“WHERE FAMI LY IS ALWAYS FIRST. ”
Another example of this can be seen in how each community has embraced us, not only our products, but us as people. It is because of the care these communities have for their friends and neighbors that we have been able to find and share an amazing amount of stories that might otherwise go unnoticed. Our local staff ’s commitment to each community is evidenced by our continued involvement in local non-profits, events, sports teams, chambers, networking groups, and more. Recently our Gig Harbor Marketing Specialist, Julie Reed, was honored as the Gig Harbor Chamber’s ‘Rookie of the Year’ for her work in the community and business development. We are a globally connected society that can often forget what’s right around corner from our own homes. It’s easy to take for granted the little things that make our community great. You will see an updated look to Living Local Magazine in 2015, but our mission will always be the same; to highlight the unique local flair of each community and what makes these such special places to live. We will continue to seek story ideas from our readers and your feedback is always welcome; this is your magazine after all! We create community! We connect people! We build trust!

A Breath of Inspiration Local Gig Harbor singer becomes a reality TV star when she gives All for Sweden. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos courtesy of Allt För Sverige by Andreas Hillergren/SVT and Jessica Robertson.
Many of us who are local to Gig Harbor have Scandinavian roots and many families who founded this area came from the Nordic countries. But there is only one Gig Harbor local who can claim the title of reality TV star in Sweden. Katie Malik – an opera singer and yoga instructor – recently starred in the Swedish hit television show, Allt för Sverige. On the show, ten lucky Americans with Swedish heritage are given the opportunity to participate in fun competitions with the hope of ultimately winning a family reunion with their long-lost Swedish relatives. Katie Malik starred in season four of Allt för Sverige, where she beat eight other contestants and was seconds away from winning, but instead became first runner-up. Still, all was not lost because Katie was chosen to return to Sweden for an “All-star” Christmas special which gave her a second chance to meet her Swedish family. But, that is the tip of the iceberg since there is so much more to Katie’s story. Katie is a professional classical singer who is living with the life-threatening illness, Cystic Fibrosis (CF). “When I was in college and I wanted to study vocal performance, I did not know if my lungs would allow me to rely on singing as a career. I
14
majored in music, but I chose a business minor in order to have a dependable income,” she noted. To some it might seem unfathomable to be a classical singer while living with a major respiratory disease. Surprisingly, Katie noted, “It turned out that the vocal performance degree really helped. Singing is one of the things that my doctors think has kept me healthy in the long run.” A recent study conducted by University of Glasgow in collaboration with Glasgow Opera verified that classical singing actually leads to improved lung function in Cystic Fibrosis patients. “When I discovered that study and talked with their lead researcher, it was eyeopening to finally have affirmation that what I’d seen in my own experience was really taking place, that classical singing technique was of real benefit to people with CF.”
40 years, at age 35 Katie is exceptionally healthy. Katie’s perspective is that even though CF can be fatal, it is a degenerative process. But, Katie knows based on the experience of friends who lost their lives to CF, that even the most conscientious patient can still fight a losing battle. She says that, “Having seen friends go down the serious road of lung transplantation, my goal is to take care of my own lungs so that a transplant is never necessary.” As a yoga instructor at the YMCA, Katie lives a preventative lifestyle that involves being in-tune with her body. “Beating the odds has been my motto every step of the way. I had a ‘beat the odds’ theme for my 30th birthday party.” So she lives life to the fullest while remaining healthy enough to pursue her passions.
Currently, Katie’s lung function fluctuates between 65-70%. To put it in perspective, that gives her two-thirds of the lung capacity of a typical person of her age and size. Still, it is enough to for Katie to continue to sing professionally and the very thing that keeps her healthy in the long-term.
Speaking publicly about her cystic fibrosis has been a recent development for Katie. In the past, she feared losing out on performance opportunities or conversely that others might misinterpret her motives. “The TV show has made me more willing to share what I do. The vast majority of viewers recognized that the story I shared was coming from a genuine place.”
Even though the average survival age for individuals living with CF in the USA is about
Even though cystic fibrosis is a challenge, Katie has an uplifting perspective. “As much as I want

My husband jokes that CF is my superpower, since for every superhero in popular culture each one always has a tragic flaw. CF tears down my body, but it also inspires me to live fully and to connect with other people.” Katie’s time on Allt för Sverige was part of that dedication to living well and connecting with others. Katie, who has an ethereal voice, noted that one of the most profound moments during the show’s filming occurred early one morning as she set off for a walk. “I was singing ‘How Great Thou Art’ on a mountain top in Lapland. It ended up being
one of my most sublime experiences during my time in Sweden –just singing for the trees and the mountains in the middle of the Arctic Circle.” The highlight of her experience was being able to connect with her Swedish family. When she returned to Sweden for the Christmas special, she met about a dozen relatives who are still living in the Skåne province of southern Sweden. Since returning to the U.S. she has been getting letters and care packages from those Swedish relatives, and her family is planning a trip to meet them all this coming summer. Katie’s presence in our community truly provides a new breath of inspiration for all of us. When Katie was asked to sum up her perspective, she noted, “Don’t impose limits on yourself that aren’t there.” This is sound advice that each of us can follow for the New Year and beyond.

Power of Attorney KNOW YOUR RIGHTS WHEN ANOTHER ACTS ON YOUR BEHALF.
BY RICHARD PATRICK, J.D.
This month I will discuss the basics of Power of Attorney (POA). A POA is basically a document giving one or more people the power to act on your behalf, if you are not available or able to do so yourself. The person who signs the POA is called the principal. The POA gives legal authority to another person, or persons, called an attorney-in-fact or agent, same authority just different names. The agent has the power to make financial, property, and other legal decisions on your behalf. The agent does not have to be an attorney or possess any special education or experience. You want your agent to be a reliable and competent adult. It’s very common for family members or spouses to be the agent. The agent has a duty to act for your benefit and avoid any self-dealing. There are different kinds of POA. A general POA gives authority to another as long as you are competent. A broader POA is called a Durable POA. The durable POA enables your agent to act for you until you die, even if you become mentally incompetent or physically unable to make decisions. A durable POA usually allows your agent to make legal decisions for you. A durable POA normally remains in effect until you revoke it or until you die. You revoke a POA by notifying your agent, in writing, that the POA is no longer valid. Sometimes we want a POA for a very specific purpose. A special POA grants the agent power for a specific purpose or period of time. This is often used for transactions like the closing on the sale of

a house or dealing with your financial affairs while you are traveling outside of the country. In most cases, a general or special POA will terminate if you become incapacitated. Additionally, there are springing POA. Springing POA becomes effective at a future time or if a future event takes place. It springs into life if a specific event, such as illness or disability takes place, or upon a future date. A POA can be very convenient. For example, imagine you are moving to another town, but you don’t have the ability to travel to that town to look for an apartment. You could ask that friend to look for an apartment for you, and give him a Special POA for the specific purpose of negotiating and signing a lease. POA are also very useful for medical planning in cases where you do become incapacitated. Give considerable thought and be careful when you choose your agent. The person you choose will have great authority and that person could do serious financial damage to you. Make sure your POA mandates that your agent do an accounting of your finances if you request one. New Year, New You
When the clock struck midnight on December 31st, we welcomed a new year, expecting that a year from now, our lives will be different. We’ll write our book, achieve relationship success, increase our business’s revenue, or lose extra pounds. It’s a New Year and now is the time for a New You. New Year’s resolutions are the launch pad for change. While some succeed in resolutions, others fail. Instead of looking at the why, study people who are successful. We find successful people generally do three things.
HOW TO MAKE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS LAST.
BY DEBORAH OLIVE.
First, define what success means to you. Your idea of success is as unique as your thumbprint. Be clear by defining WHAT you want and WHY you want it. Achieving your new level of success may seem fairly easy, or it may feel like climbing a mountain. Having summited Mt Rainier several years ago, I find it a fitting allegory.
Take Steps Whatever your idea of success, create a clear image and find a mentor or coach who has achieved what you want to achieve.
Three of my women friends and I tossed around the idea of achieving something significant together. We considered everything from a shopping trip to New York City to summiting Mt Rainier. One of the women in our group participated in the Climb
18
LIVINGLOCAL
for Clean Air, a fundraiser for lung cancer, in honor of her father. She was unsuccessful. She wanted to try again – for her Dad. We had our WHY. The goal was clear, to stand on top of Mt. Rainier, so finding an image was easy. I used an image of Mt. Rainier as my screensaver. We watched videos of climbing trips and read books on successful summits. Whatever your idea of success, create a clear image. Second, find a mentor or coach who has achieved what you want to achieve. If you want to learn a new sport, craft or skill, you naturally seek out someone who’s “been there.” Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll, attributes Lou Tice, an educator, life coach and founder of the Pacific Institute, for helping him clarify techniques he uses to bring out the best in his players. To successfully summit Mt Rainier, we found a mountain man with over 20 years experience bringing people to the top AND back down again. We sat in his classroom. We followed his advice regarding gear, learned to navigate with a map and compass, trained and tended a multitude of details under his direction.

A powerful question for most any endeavor is, “What one step can I take now, with what I have, to move my goal forward? Lastly, take action. Remember WHY you want this particular success and let it fuel your actions. A powerful question for most any endeavor is, “What one step can I take now, with what I have, to move my goal forward?” Then, take it – even if the action is small – like making a phone call or setting a date on your calendar. In the beginning, training workouts for Mt Rainier were 30 minutes. I asked my trainer for more. In her wisdom, she said, “No.” I built a solid base before she expanded my workouts. Four months later, I was in the Cascades on Saturdays training for a full day. Ultimately, our entire team of twelve would summit Mt Rainier. We were in action months before our climb, and it started with small steps. What are the small steps you can take now that will prepare you for bigger steps later?

After all, our busy lives today have so many competing obligations. Whether you’re experiencing chaotic mornings with kids late for school, spilled coffee on your new suit, or last-minute stops at a sporting good’s store to replace yet another lost football mouth guard, life can seem unorganized. Or maybe you are taking care of aging parents, selling your home, or simply working two different jobs to raise money for your teen’s college fund. The challenges of everyday life can be daunting.

Donate whatever you didn’t use for the last 2 years. • As you put away each gift, find something else to give away. • Encourage kids to sort old toys and donate items they no longer use. • Throw out expired medicines. • Complete a home maintenance list of all items needing repair, replacement or upgrading, and work them into your annual budget. • Change furnace and water filters. • Recycle last year’s magazines. • Buy your new 2015 calendar and fill in annual events. • Set up your 2015 files for household bills. • Create a “tickler” filing system to keep your home organized throughout the year. • Schedule a deep clean to tackle areas that haven’t been touched in months. Decide on your vision for your home, make a plan, and ask for help. Make Your Financial Future a Priority.
A New Look at Finances SEEK TO BALANCE “RISK TOLERANCE” AND “REQUIRED RISK” FOR YOUR INVESTMENTS.
ARTICLE FOR USE BY EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR ERIN ABRIGO OF GIG HARBOR. Like everyone else, you have financial goals. To help achieve these goals, you may need to invest — and when you invest, you’ll need to take on some risk. But the more you understand this risk, and the better you are at managing it, the greater your potential for staying invested for the long term. • Risk tolerance — Your risk tolerance is essentially your comfort level with taking risk. For example, if you have a high tolerance for risk, you may be comfortable investing aggressively. Conversely, if you tend to be risk-averse, you might lean more toward more conservative investment vehicles that offer greater protection of principal. • Required risk — While the term “required risk” may sound odd, it is actually an integral component of your ability to invest successfully. Basically, your required risk is the level of risk necessary to help you achieve your investment goals.
your ultimate goal — which, in this example, may mean accepting a later retirement date. Obviously, this is a personal decision. However, you may have more flexibility than you might have imagined. For instance, you might feel that you should be risk-averse because you have seen so many fluctuations in the financial markets. But if you have many decades to go until you retire, you actually do have time to recover from short-term losses, which means you may be able to reasonably handle more volatility. On the other hand, once you’re retired, you won’t have as many years to bounce back from market downturns, so you’ll have less “risk capacity” than you did when you were younger. In any case, by balancing your risk tolerance and your required risk level — and by understanding your risk capacity — you can be better prepared to take the emotion out of investing.
As you invest, you’ll need to balance these two aspects of risk. For example, what might happen if you have a low risk tolerance, leading you toward “safer,” low-growth investments, but your goal is to retire early? For most people, this goal requires them to invest in vehicles that offer significant growth potential, such as stocks. And, as you know, investing in stocks entails risk — specifically, the risk that your stocks will lose value. So in this situation, your risk tolerance — the fact that you are riskaverse — is going to collide with your required risk level, the amount of risk you are going to need to take (by investing in stocks) to achieve your goal of early retirement.

When such a collision occurs, you have two choices. First, you could “stretch” your risk tolerance and accept the need to take on riskier investments in exchange for the growth potential you will require. Your other choice is to stay within your risk tolerance and adjust

Business Is Thinking “Forward” in 2015 GIG HARBOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
BY NANCY HOHENSTEIN.
Resolutions? They are not just for us couch potatoes who have suddenly found that our holiday binges have caught up with us. Businesses and organizations do resolutions too. It their case, though, it’s called planning. With newly elected Officers and Board, The Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce is creating a vision (plan) for the future that works for everyone who lives in the community, not just for the businesses and local organizations that make up their membership. Asked how The Chamber has “resolved” to make 2015 a year to remember, new Board Chair Tim Lopez pointed out that the issues important to the individuals here in Gig Harbor are, more often than not, the same ones that affect the businesses here. “Two major examples
LIVINGLOCAL
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM JANUARY 2015
are transportation costs and jobs,” says Lopez. “Take transportation and tolls as an example,” says Lopez. “The costs to cross The Narrows Bridge are incredibly isolating for businesses who want to transport their goods to the mainland. Tolls increase the cost of doing business and discourage businesses from locating here since they affect the residents who enjoy living in our community but must cross the bridge and get to work.” About 62%* of the Peninsula workforce works outside the community, and Lopez thinks the threat of ever-increasing tolls is a critical handicap. Allen Woodard, the Chamber Marketing Committee Chair, explains. “The Gig Harbor Chamber is looking forward. We want to shape the future of our community
25
to make its economy vibrant and viable. The key to doing so successfully is collaboration to improve our influence.” “Working alone is not effective,” says Woodard. The way forward, he maintains, is local and regional collaboration. Working within the community, The Chamber has developed strong partnerships with their traditional allies, The City of Gig Harbor, and local organizations such as The Uptown Business Association and the Waterfront Association. Numbers make everyone stronger, he says. Warren Zimmerman, President of The Chamber, explains how their collaboration is extending beyond the internal community to leverage their influence with the state. “The West Sound Alliance is a perfect example of how we are working, not just with our own members and other chambers on the peninsula, but with city and county governments and other businessoriented organizations to find shared priorities such as transportation, education, and ecology. Our Chamber initiated that collaboration.” Both Woodard and Zimmerman agree that there is power in numbers. Gig Harbor is a small community, and approaching the legislature on critical issues requires the clout of a larger influence. “For instance,” say Zimmerman, “we recognized that, as state gas tax revenues for transportation have diminished due to the introduction of more fuel-efficient cars, the state has been exploring other revenue sources. They continue to raise the bridge tolls and are now considering a tax on miles driven for every vehicle. To implement that, they would require each car to be equipped with a device that tracks
mileage, to be purchased by the individuals and businesses who own the vehicles. That hurts everyone.” Lopez acknowledges that the direction for developing collaborative efforts can be credited in part to his predecessor, Pat Schmidt, who recently completed her term as Board Chair. “Pat is the queen of partnering, and she pointed us in this direction, “ he says. Schmidt still sits on the boards of The Chamber and multiple local organizations. In keeping with The Chamber’s New Year’s resolutions is the debut of The Chamber’s new website, focused on encouraging tourism, relocation of businesses and families to our area. and providing the visitors and residents with a calendar of interesting events and attractions. “The website is our front door, introducing visitors, residents and businesses to our community. In the near future, we are adding a mobile app for access, to serve the younger generation.” says Woodard.
The Web “The website is our front door, introducing visitors, residents and businesses to our community. In the near future, we are adding a mobile app for access, to serve the younger generation.”

Other new plans include a remodel of the Chamber’s Visitor Center to be more in keeping with the unique character of the community, and, of course, continuing the things that are successful, including the Maritime Gig, which is the summer’s most visited event. Accomplishing The Chamber’s goals requires stability in both membership and finance. They have both. Eighty-six percent membership retention and a strong financial base that includes a reserve fund established years ago prove their forward thinking have been a continuing standard. *City of Gig Harbor Comprehensive Plan, 2012 Economic Development Element. pp 6-1

TO GOOD HEALTH Optimize your oral health in a luxurious and calming setting. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos courtesy Dr. Rhonda Savage. Dr. Rhonda Savage, DDS, has been in dentistry for 38 years; starting as a dental assistant in 1976. After attending University of Washington School of Dentistry, she was a Navy dentist, finishing with the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. Dr. Savage was active duty as a Navy dentist during the time of Desert Shield, Desert Storm. She was honored with the Navy Achievement medal and the expert pistol medal during that time.
children. Dr. Savage, whose story is inspirational, remarks, “I never figured I’d go to school, much less be a professional. After working as a dental assistant and a front desk person, I found I loved dentistry and helping patients.” After speaking with her mother, who was her biggest supporter, she pursued her dream. She also credits others for her success, “My parents, family and staff are my supporters. I couldn’t do what I’ve done without their love and support.”
As the president of the Washington State Dental Association, Dr. Savage has been in private practice for 20 years. Additionally, she owns a consulting business where she speaks and consults with dentists across the U.S. and Canada. She purchased her first dental practice in 1992, in University Place. At the same time, she and her family moved into Gig Harbor and have lived in this area ever since. After selling her University Place practice in 2003, she opened a practice in her professional building on 56th, just off Olympic Drive. She and her husband built the building so that they could be closer to their daughter, who is now a professional soccer goalkeeper. Dr. Savage and her husband delight in their family, including their three amazing grandchildren.
Dr. Savage’s practice provides general dentistry, with a focus on health. They love children and have patients of all ages. Their services range from fillings and crowns to cosmetic and implant dentistry, all completed within a luxurious environment.
Though a local for many years, Dr. Savage grew up in Ketchikan, Alaska, in a family of six
However, Dr. Savage has a very specific area of interest: sleep apnea. She notes, “People don’t realize that snoring and sleep apnea increase the risk of cavities and gum disease. We work with a board certified sleep physician with at home sleep studies, and provide patients with oral sleep appliances.” Additionally, Dr. Savage has help for migraine sufferers. “Our practice also helps patients with headaches and migraines, relating to their bite and TMJ. If the bite isn’t balanced, it can throw off the muscles and joints of the head and neck.

Clenching and grinding can trigger headaches, as well as muscle inflammation”. Most of all, Dr. Savage’s goal is to help her patients feel welcome and safe in her practice. “We’re passionate about patient health; we also love to have fun with our patients. Our facility is awesome. We spoil our patients with heated neck pillows, noise cancelling headphones and various forms of sedation for our slightly apprehensive or totally nervous patients.” Outside of the office, Dr. Savage has had the privilege to be the volunteer dental team of the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium for 12 years. She has also provided school presentations on smoking/tobacco use and how it relates to oral health. It is clear that Dr. Rhonda Savage puts her patient’s health, wellbeing, and peace of mind first with her exceptional attention to oral health, general health, and each patient’s individual needs and comfort level. IN FOCUS FOSTERING COMMUNITY
Zog’s on Fox Island is all about building community and buying local. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos by John Towey. Everyone needs a second home away from home. With Facebook as our primary mode of socializing, many of us no longer get a lot of face time with friends, let alone friends we have yet to meet. Dwane Herzog, a longtime resident of our area, remembers a time when his store on Fox Island had a small-town feel. Though his store continues to be busy, Dwane has noticed that people don’t stop and chat the way that they used to. Dwane explained, “When I first bought the store, everyone took the time to talk to everyone else they ran into at our store and there was a sense of community. That doesn’t happen anymore.” It is no surprise in today’s busy world, where people are constantly juggling multiple priorities; it is difficult to find the time. Yet, Dwane also noticed that after he closed his restaurant years ago, there really was no informal gathering place on Fox Island where people could come and get to know others in the community. Fortunately, Dwane has taken positive action and has spent the past year building Zog’s, which he hopes will become an informal social hub for residents of Fox Island and Gig Harbor. With large communal family-style tables that can seat over 30 people under covered areas, Zog’s reminds me of the heurigens that are a staple of the Austrian countryside. However, the outdoor area is very much like a traditional German biergarten with Northwest flare. In the biergarten, you will find a large waterfall that meanders through the property and a couple of hand-crafted fire pits from which spring mini-waterfalls. Since Dwane spent time visiting Germany, creating a feeling reminiscent of biergartens was his intention. But, Dwane did not stop there since he is a big advocate for buying local. Most of all, Dwane saw an opportunity to assist with our local economy. Referring to the multiplier effect, Dwane noted, “Only seventeen cents stays in each community if goods and services are purchased that are from a non-local source. But, if you buy local forty-three cents on every dollar stays in community.” In that spirit Dwane hired local Fox Island and Gig Harbor contractors, landscapers, cabinetmakers, and artisans to complete Zog’s down to the smallest of details. He also hired people local to the area to work at Zog’s, which created additional jobs for local workers. Dwane has five flat-screen TVs available for families and friends to catch games together on Sundays. He and his sons also plan to showcase local talent by bringing in local, acoustic bands, and other talented area musicians. Be sure to check in often to catch music events. The Herzogs truly hope this can serve as a social hub for both Fox Island and Gig Harbor so that area families and friends can truly get to know one another again.

Iconic Rosedale Hall
Big news for thriving PenMet Parks: Gig Harbor’s 100+ year-old Rosedale Hall is now under their blooming umbrella and will continue to serve as a center for community events and activities. The emblematic town hall was built by Rosedale residents in the late 1800s as a gathering place in what was a somewhat isolated settlement. Rosedale citizens depended on each other and worked shoulder to shoulder in constructing the hall. Today, Rosedale Market sits on the site where Rosedale Hall was originally built. In 1932 the hall was relocated to its current site on land donated by the Platt family. Home to a variety of gatherings (preschools, church services, weddings, dances, holiday parties, family reunions, exercise classes, and more), the hall has been managed and maintained by Rosedale volunteers for more than a century. Imagine the untold hours of service bestowed by Rosedale citizens during those 100 years!
A NEW PEN MET PARKS ACQUISITION PROMISES FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.

“Talk to anyone in Rosedale over age 70 and they’ve probably been on the board,” says Sandy Anderson, who has been closely involved with the Rosedale Community Hall Association board for about 40 years. “But we’ve been at a turning point for some time. Families are busier these days, with working parents and kids having activities farther away,” she adds. Revenue to pay property taxes, utilities, insurance, building improvements and other expenses has been generated through building rental and small donations, but larger and more predictable funding sources are important for the long term.
transferring the building to a larger organization could be the best way to continue that legacy. Anderson approached Terry Lee, Executive Director of PenMet Parks, to consider bringing the building under PenMet’s purview. PenMet operates adjacent tennis courts and a nearby baseball field. The boards of both organizations agreed that a transfer of the property would be a net gain for area residents. “It is a good fit for Rosedale Hall, a good fit for PenMet, and most of all a benefit for the community,” Lee says of the transfer. “PenMet can protect the building for community use and for the future.” Having grown from 11 to over 700 acres in just 10 years, PenMet is eager provide programs at Rosedale Hall. “It is a moderately sized venue with capacity for up to around 80 people, a full service kitchen, stage, wood floors, and table and chairs on-site,” Lee elaborated. See PenMet’s website for reservations and information (www.penmetparks.org). Gig Harbor owes a debt of gratitude to the volunteers and benefactors who have cared for the historic hall. Anderson mentioned special thanks to Dave Barreuto who has generously managed the building for about 10 years. “We know the hall is in really good hands on a long term basis,” says Anderson. Pen Met Parks has done it again. This is good news for everyone since it is a perfect way to preserve this local gem and add more amenities to the community for generations to come!
Rosedale Hall volunteers and supporters have done a remarkable job in preserving this historic treasure, yet Anderson and the board realized that

FOR THE LOVE OF GIG HARBOR Success comes from respect, creative solutions, and honesty. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos courtesy of Howard Mackert of Mackert Auto in Gig Harbor. Howard Mackert and his wife have lived in Gig Harbor for 23 years and never grow tired of its friendly, small-town atmosphere and breathtaking views of Mt. Rainier and Puget Sound. Formerly a Field Engineer for General Motors, and after living here for only a few months, he announced to his wife that ‘I would rather end my career with GM than leave Gig Harbor. I love this place!!” Several years later, Howard Mackert decided to venture out on his own and he opened the doors to his business for the first time the weekend that occurred just after September 11th, 2001. According to Howard, Mackert Automotive, a general service automotive mechanical repair center, offers the best warranty in town: three years or 36,000 miles on all their services.. They are also a Napa AutoCare Center, which gives customers nationwide a two year or 24,000 mile warranty anywhere in the U.S. & Canada. Mackert Automotive focuses on keeping customers off the roadside so they don’t have to wait for a tow truck in the rain. Famous for their honesty and integrity, they will match their recommendations to your specific needs for repairs. Mackert notes, “If I wouldn’t replace the part on my car, we aren’t going to sell it to you. You only get what you need to be safe and reliable.”
Mackert believes there is a very simple secret to success and that is to treat each customer with respect, integrity, and honesty. “We take care of the customer first then their vehicle. Meaning that, if it’s not prudent to continue putting money into an old car, we let you know up front.” Consulting with customers is a major part of how they accomplish this goal by sharing Howard’s broad 40+ years of experience in the Automotive Industry.
Howard Mackert has a passion for giving back. He is proud to be part of the famous Friday morning Rotary Group of Gig Harbor. As a group, they have accomplished tremendous things in our community that range from spearheading the YMCA, St. Anthony’s Hospital, Cushman Trail, countless parks, not to mention clean water projects in South America, Literacy in Guatemala, and solar panels and computers in the Mountains of the Philippines.
Mackert does not want his customers to look back with regret and say, “If I’d only have known, I wouldn’t have held onto the car.” Mackert does his best to predict and inform customers when it might be time to repair a car or move on to the next vehicle.
Mackert enjoys his activity in the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce, the Gig Harbor Cruiser’s car club, and Business Networking International.
Because of the way he does business, Howard Mackert has established himself as the local automotive expert, known for “out of the box” solutions to everyday challenges. For example, he recently worked on a Chevy Suburban that needed shocks. Unfortunately, this vehicle had electronic assisted suspension, resulting in $1,200 shocks each. He found a way to use regular shocks that only cost $150 each. He was able to circumvent the vehicle’s computer so that it ignored the non-electronic shocks, resulting in normal function.

For Peninsula High School senior Michala Zilkey, sports is a year round event. As the captain of the basketball and track teams, Michala has also gained notoriety for holding the school record for discus and being named the 2013 track athlete of the year. Michala has also been awarded the scholar athlete award for every sport; two years for varsity volleyball, three years varsity basketball, and three years varsity track. Michala said she hopes to receive a track and field scholarship at a four-year university. “My focus is on Utah State University and Washington State University,” said Michala, adding that she would like to pursue a career in physical or occupational therapy. “I want to be able to help young people grow and function in a normal way so they can do what they enjoy.” Michala reflects on her years in sports and said the camaraderie is something she will treasure most. “I have an intense competitive edge, but

Michala said athletics has taught her a lesson she will take with her the rest of her life. “Perseverance will take you far in life.”
Because he began school at the age of 4, Davis has always been a year younger than most in his class, something he said has been the biggest challenge throughout his sports career. But determination and a positive attitude have helped him become successful.
Gig Harbor High School – Davis Alexander At the age of 16, Gig Harbor football player Davis Alexander is already looking ahead to his options as a college athlete. “I would love to play college football at the Division I level,” said Davis. “As of now, Central Washington University is recruiting me.”

throughout the month. Don’t forget to catch the Gail Pettis Quartet on 1/24 (8pm). Gail, a soulful jazz musician, has been featured in More Magazine as well as at Jazz Alley in Seattle. Jazz Times has said the following about her vocal style: “Pettis follows the same, slightly curvaceous path...simultaneously maintaining a retro air that hints at the silken sophistication and the storytelling elan of the young Nancy Wilson.” Or, catch the Mouths of Babes EP Release Tour on 1/31 (8pm). They describe their sound as, “equal parts celebration and blues, folk and soul, salve and anthem—an invitation to love this life, to sing your sob story and end it with a smile.” For your enjoyment, on three Fridays this month — 1/9, 1/16, and 1/23 — Morso will be featuring wine tastings with different exclusive wine labels. This month is the perfect time to stay indoors with friends while catching some fresh music and introducing your palette to new wine pairings. COVER STORY TAKE POSITIVE ACTION Climate change is affecting both the health and financial livelihood of Puget Sound. By Sarah Polyakov.
“This we know, our world is changing faster and more dramatically than ever before. As a parent and as a grandparent, I cannot consciously accept the dangers of climate change for my family or yours.” Washington State Governor, Jay Inslee When many hear the phrases climate change or global warming, they think in terms of melting icebergs and global impacts that they believe are centuries away. There are others who tune out completely and believe climate change is a partisan issue being used to further certain political agendas. Finally, there are those who, male and female, Democrat and Republican, who review the facts and recognize the very real current impacts to both our local and global economies. Joseph Romm, PhD, likens climate change to a baseball player breaking records. Dr. Romm keenly observes, “Like a baseball player on steroids, our climate system is breaking records at an unnatural pace” (yearsoflivingdangerously. com). Climate change might be like a baseball player on steroids, but in baseball, there are winners as well as losers. But, with climate change, there are only losers. On the surface, it might appear that climate change would require people to move to higher ground, as the polar icebergs melt since that is a very obvious global change to observe and forecast. But, it’s the changes that are not as easily observable that have the potential to cause

the most disruption and in fact could end up being the most deadly. Let’s take a look at ocean acidification due to climate change. For millions of years, our oceans have had a stable pH balance, which has created the perfect environment for sea life and has permitted aquatic life of all kinds to thrive. However, because of climate change due to carbon emissions, the pH balance in our oceans is being affected. As a result, our oceans are becoming more acidic due to too much dissolved CO2. While at the outset, it may not be obvious what type of effect this will have since a change in ocean pH is not visible to the naked eye. Oceanographers and marine biologists have found a very pernicious domino effect is in the works.
is becoming depleted. But, pteropods don’t only feed salmon; they also feed herrings and other fish species. Pteropods also serve as a preliminary warning to more things to come since the shells of shellfish are made up of the same material. If left unchecked, some scientists forecast that the entire food web in our oceans might collapse. Miyoko Sakashita, oceans director at the Center for Biological Diversity, noted, “The science is in, and it says the Northwest’s stretch of ocean, and all the marine life it supports, is in trouble. Washington may also be a warning beacon for
state economy and host several thousand jobs. Derek Kilmer (D) and Jaime Herrera Beutler (R), both Washington state Representatives, have recognized climate change is a nonpartisan issue and are partnering together to make a difference. Derek Kilmer, who is currently serving in Congress, believes addressing climate change and ocean acidification is a moral imperative. During a short break from Congress, he spoke to me unswervingly about the importance of addressing this issue. “This should not be partisan issue. This is a threat to community, businesses, and jobs.” Thus, he has encouraged both Democrats and Republicans to join forces. But, Representative Kilmer also brings this issue closer to home, talking to local businesses all along the Washington coast that are impacted by climate change. “This is an issue that matters in so many ways. It’s both a moral and an economic issue. This issue matters so much to our shellfish growers who are dealing in real time with the effects of ocean acidification,” said Kilmer.
Climate change might be like a baseball player on steroids, but in baseball, there are winners as well as losers. But, with climate change, there are only losers.
The issue with ocean acidification is that the shells of various marine creatures have not adapted. So, the shells of creatures such as pteropods are dissolving. Ocean acidification has already become a real concern for coastal communities right here in Washington state.
“Ocean acidification in Puget Sound was first observed by the shellfish industry. Larval mortalities in select hatcheries and natural set failures in Hood Canal and Willapa Bay over the past five years have created growing alarm over the potential effects of corrosive seawater” (restorationfund.org). This phenomenon is already affecting salmon fishery yields since this food source for salmon

the future of our oceans. But it isn’t enough to simply recognize the problem. We have to act, and that means cutting carbon pollution” (skeptcalscience.com). Not only does this impact our food sources, it also impacts jobs right here at home. Our fishing industry supports around 67,000 jobs and brings millions of dollars in revenue to Washington state. We also have many shellfish growers, some family-owned over generations, that farm oysters, mussels, and clams. Our growers contribute around $250 million to our

The good news is, on May 22, 2014, Republican Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler and Democratic Congressman Derek Kilmer introduced a bill titled the Ocean Acidification Innovation Act, which would permit federal agencies to leverage existing funds targeted toward managing, researching, and monitoring ocean acidification and the ongoing challenges that it creates.
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM JANUARY 2015
“Both our Navy and our Defense Department have identified climate change as a threat multiplier,” said Kilmer. “The effects of climate change will cause both food shortages and large populations to be displaced, which will lead to global instability.” A healthy ecosystem is a gift that is not to be squandered. If it is squandered, all of us find ourselves at a disadvantage. It’s clear that ocean acidification is an issue that affects Puget Sound and could create a cascade of negative repercussions that affect areas beyond our waters. Yet, not all is lost. Each of us has the opportunity to either begin or to renew our dedication to being stewards of Puget Sound and the planet. Now that a new year has arrived, this is the perfect time to envision today’s long-term effects on our oceans and to figure out what legacy we want to leave to future generations. Now is the time to stand with our Governor and our state Representatives and refuse to accept the dangers of climate change by taking positive action both to lessen global CO2 levels and reverse ocean acidification.

The New Gorgeous DISCOVER A NEW ASPECT OF YOUR BEAUTY RIGHT HERE AT HOME.
BY SARAH POLYAKOV.
“Of life’s two chief prizes, beauty and truth, I found the first in a loving heart and the second in a laborer’s hand.” Kahlil Gibran New Year’s resolutions usually involve improving some aspect of one’s appearance, and some of these resolutions are usually based on a perception that involves lack of feeling attractive. Many of us are locked into the belief that there are unacceptable aspects of our appearance that need toning, tanning, or teasing. Some are stuck believing that until we improve what we perceive to be flaws, we will not be pretty enough. But the fact of the matter is that everyone is born beautiful and born to be beautiful. Beauty is something that is inherent within each of us and not something outside of ourselves that we must constantly pursue. Still, that does not mean we need to give up our make-up, hair color, or our daily walk or jog. A shift in perspective comes when we realize that through make-up, clothing, or exercise, we can bring out a new facet of what is our already inherent beauty. We already possess beauty- we are already beautiful- but clothing and a new hairstyle can bring out a new and fun aspect of that beauty.

What better way to spend the New Year than to check out local clothing stores and hair salons? Now is the time to get to know your area with fresh eyes and to stop in and try on some clothing in that cute little boutique that you have never visited. It’s also the perfect time to think about a new hairstyle or slight modification in hair color. Visiting a local specialty salon might be just the thing to get someone else’s take on fun ways to frame your beautiful face. The new gorgeous is all about looking at yourself with fresh eyes, trying on an outfit slightly out of your comfort zone, or looking for a new and fresh hairstyle. The new gorgeous is all about recognizing your inherent beauty and then telling any inner critics to take a hike. You are on a different path this year and that path is all about realizing you are enough. So, stop into a new boutique, get a new cut and color, and get to know your neighborhood stores. Not only will you be the first to see trendy finds, you will find inspiring ways to enhance your beauty in the process and take part in the new gorgeous, which is a mindset. That mindset is centered around a heart full of love. Reaching for that ideal is the best New Year’s goal of all.

Tips to Keep You Healthy
A New Year’s Resolution to Keep! MOVE SMARTER, LIVE BETTER.
BY TERRI ROSSI.
This new year would be different. Really, she thought. Because it needed to be different. Susan broke her hip in a misstep off a curb the previous year. Her doctor told her that 20 percent of women age 65 or older die from complications within a year of a hip fracture. And if a person has pneumonia after a hip fracture, the 30-day mortality increases to a whopping 43 percent. So Susan sat...feeling happy to still be upright and taking her next breath. And she wanted to keep the ‘goodness rolling.’ She pledged that her New Year’s resolution would be to bring back the vitality she used to enjoy decades ago. For that to happen Susan knew she would need smooth, comfortable confident movement to counteract the hesitancy and fear that had crept into her

body after the fall. Dr. Erika Mitchell, M.D., had cautioned that, “Something like 80 percent of people who break their hips will never go back to their baseline. A lot of these patients wind up having trouble walking, [and] have to use canes.” Many would lose their independence and need assisted living. Dr. Mitchell recommended regular exercise to protect against future falls. Specifically, the focus would be on improving balance, coordinating movement and increasing leg strength. To help her with this daunting new beginning, Susan was directed to a local orthopedic-level therapist who taught innovate movement lessons called Feldenkrais®. Developed in Europe and brought

to the US in the 1980’s, Feldenkrais lessons influence brain and behavior through a whole-body learning process involving gentle movement exploration and directed attention. Feldenkrais lessons help the brain communicate better with the body so that everything works better together. Susan’s Feldenkrais therapist used verbal directions and gentle hand pressure to move her tight sluggish body in ways that mimicked common things, for example, taking a step, walking up stairs or getting up from a chair. She found it a deeply profound and relaxing selforganizing process, rather than a demanding traditional exercise workout. The therapist showed her easy ways to regain confidence, good balance and mobility—all while Susan was sitting comfortably and safely in a chair. Her Feldenkrais therapist also provided lesson summaries and loaned out videos that helped ‘keep the goodness rolling’ and improve confidence at home. Susan found Feldenkrais lessons to be an amazingly effective and gentle way to quickly regain safe movement without being invasive or physically demanding. And it was one of the few New Year’s resolutions that she was excited and happy to keep!
• Women sustain three-quarters of all hip fractures. • The rate of hip fracture increases with age, doubling every 5-6 years after age 60 years. • One in three adults who lived independently before their hip fracture remains in a nursing home for at least a year after their injury. • More than 95 percent of hip fractures are caused by falling, most often by falling sideways onto the hip. To help prevent falls, you can: • Exercise regularly, focusing on improving balance and coordination. Feldenkrais and Tai Chi programs are especially good.
Your Baseline Something like 80 percent of people who break their hips will never go back to their baseline.
BELOW Feldenkrais and Tai Chi programs are especially good.
• Get adequate calcium and vitamin D— from food and/or from supplements. • Have a bone density scan performed to identify early signs of bone weakness/loss. • Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review medicines to identify medicines that may cause side effects or interactions such as dizziness or drowsiness.
How big is the problem? • Hip fracture occurs in approximately 341,000 persons in the United States each year.
Susan found Feldenkrais lessons to be an amazingly effective and gentle way to quickly regain safe movement without being invasive or physically demanding.

ARE CHRONIC HEADACHES AFFECTING YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE?
Downtown Gig Harbor 206-713-7169 www.bestbodymoves.com
BY DR. RHONDA SAVAGE.
Do your headaches make you feel tired and irritable? Or perhaps you’re depressed or feel guilty because you’ve lost time with your family and can’t function well at work. One patient told me, “I only get headaches twice a month, but they’re “doozies!” Chronic headache problems are not necessarily a condition that’s all in your head. The source of this pain can often be traced back to Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD), which is a condition that affects one or both of the temporomandibular joints. These joints work together to facilitate jaw movements needed for chewing and speaking. TMD can affect the TM joints, jaw muscles, and facial nerves when a person opens or closes the mouth. Typical TMD symptoms include: • • • • •
Headaches Neck pain Ear pain Jaw tenderness Jaw pain when chewing, biting, or yawning • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth • Sensitive teeth More than 15 percent of adults nationwide suffer from chronic facial pain, and it is usually a direct symptom of TMD. It can occur as a result of arthritis, a dislocated or broken jaw, or having an improper bite. Overuse of jaw muscles, clenching teeth, or grinding teeth can cause symptoms to increase in severity. This means bad headaches and other forms of crippling facial pain. Past automobile accidents or a fall can throw off the head and neck muscles and tendons, resulting in an imbalance in the head and neck. This imbalance then throws off the TMD and your bite relationship, resulting in headaches.
Dealing with TMD-caused pain If you suffer from chronic headaches, have you had your face and jaw examined for a proper diagnosis? If not, you might see your physician, a neurologist, a chiropractor or a physical therapist and find that things get better, for a short time. You can end up like a ‘dog chasing its tail’ if your bite is a factor in the cause of your headaches. There are non-surgical treatments for TMDbased headaches and facial pain. These treatments include: • Taking anti-inflammatory pain relievers • Applying heat packs to affected areas • Using relaxation techniques to reduce stress • Wearing an oral appliance to prevent teeth grinding in your sleep • The use of cold laser, micro-electric current and ultrasound, which reduce inflammation, break up adhesions and improve healing • Muscle therapy, stretching exercises and homecare Most TMD symptoms will subside and eventually go away with proper treatment. We can prescribe a proper care routine for reducing TMD symptoms that will eliminate discomfort felt during normal activities like eating or talking. If TMD symptoms are too severe, we may recommend further treatment to correct teeth alignment, or to realign the jaw. The bottom line is that living with headaches is not necessary. Don’t allow your energy, your quality of life, or your mood to suffer any longer. There are many alternatives to treating headaches that are both non-invasive and convenient. Be sure to schedule an appointment to get the root cause of these issues solved so that going about your daily business no longer has to be a real headache.

IT’S NOT A DEFICIENCY OF PROZAC®. BY DR. GLORIA GILBÈRE. As three-term president of Fibromyalgia Coalition Int’l (FCI), a doctor of natural health specializing in inflammatory disorders for thirty-two yearsAND a recovered victim of this “invisible” disorder, I can attest to the misconceptions, misdiagnosis, mistreatment, over-medication, and lack of validation that the symptoms/ syndrome are real! Fibro knots are real, they’re not something a little antidepressant will resolve – only adding to your liver’s toxic burden. Fibromyalgia is made up of three words; Latin for fibrous tissue (fibro), Greek for muscle (myo), and pain (algia). These painful muscle knots or ropes, I always believed, are caused by toxins stored within fascia (soft/connective tissues). Recent biopsy studies using immune-histochemical staining validate my methodology because they found increased levels of collagen and inflammatory mediators (toxins) in connective tissue surrounding muscle cells in fibro patients. Fibro-knots are inflammation of fascia – similar to plantar fasciitis described medically as a dysfunctional healing response – explaining why NSAIDs and steroids have NOT been effective in fibro patients and further serve to overburden the two organs that can help you recover, the intestinal tract and liver. There are foundational steps for relief and achieving wellness. First, avoid “fueling” inflammation by ELIMINATING foods known as nightshades, monosodium glutamate (msg) and its legal aliases (hydrolyzed vegetable protein, etc.), nitrates and sulfites. In my next article I’ll specifically list ingredients and hidden aliases*. Avoid inflammatory responses by cooking from scratch and learn to read and interpret labels – my future articles will help you.
LIVINGLOCAL
Second, insure bowel elimination is full, complete and once/twice a day – waste sitting in your colon adds to total body burden and erodes the delicate intestinal lining, no thicker than your eyelid. Either consume a quality fiber supplement daily, eat plenty of fiber, OR do what I recommend my clients – 24-32 ounces of liquid salad daily (green smoothie). Third, have a thorough dental exam by a biologically-certified dentist. Many victims of inflammation and immune system disorders have a “false sense of security” because they have expensive restorations –what happens in your mouth…happens in your body. If you have toxic dental work, periodontal infection or poor oral hygiene, your inflammation will never resolve until you deal with resolving underlying causes. Known as The Health Detective, Dr. Gloria is a certified dental professional (CDP), doctor of natural health (PhD), homeopath (DA Hom), certified dietary counselor (DSC) EcoErgonomist (EcE), Wholistic Rejuvenist (CWR) –renowned worldwide for her work in identifying and implementing natural and nutrition-based solutions to chemicallyinduced and inflammatory disorders, multiple allergic response syndromes, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and digestive disorders that defy conventional diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Gilbere, who is the Founder/CEO of Institute for Wholistic Rejuvenation, is also an acclaimed talk show host. As the author of 18 books, 8 courses and over 1,700 health articles, she invites you to visit www. gloriagilbere.com or call 888.352.8175. *As a special offer to readers of Gig Harbor Living Local, download a FREE eBook describing the science/implications of nightshade foods and their contribution to inflammation – enter into browser: gloriagilbere.com/painbook and enter Coupon Code: gigjan15.

A New Year’s Resolution “I WANT TO REDUCE STRESS IN MY LIFE!” BY SUSAN HOFFMAN.
You survived the holidays and you may be saying “How can I do the holidays differently so that I don’t feel so exhausted, depressed, depleted and now sick with a terrible cold?” You want to feel healthy, heal, and be well again. In order to be healthy or whole it is important to have a body, mind and spirit approach and to harmoniously integrate the physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects to a person’s life. Our body is continually working to keep us healthy, but this process can be blocked by poor nutrition, stress, lack of exercise and other unhealthy lifestyle habits. One of your resolutions may have been to achieve better emotional and physical health by reducing stress in your life whether professionally in the workplace or personally at home. Resolutions are a good way to start, but the challenge is to sustain them. Statistics show that after six months only 44% of resolvers are actually fulfilling their pledge.
and pay close attention to the things in your life that make you feel happy and peaceful. Stress has been implicated for health issues ranging from the common cold to cancer. There are three different stages of life to consider. First there is the “Chronological Age” which is measured exactly in the years we have been alive and something we wish we could reverse but that is not possible. And then there is the “Physiologic Age” and that will depend on how well over the years of living we have cared for our mind and body. And the third age is “Spiritual” and this sense of wholeness and wellbeing is a very powerful and significant tool to cultivate a full and vibrant life. Go forth in the New Year and make a New Year’s resolution to reduce stress because the mere act of making a resolution improves your odds of success. It is helpful to have a plan when you desire lifestyle changes and that means get your calendar out now and schedule a massage!
Emotions do affect our health, and our bodies will respond to the way we think, feel and act. It has been said that more than 90% of disease is stress-related and stress ages us faster, both internally and externally.
Welcome home to Harbor Place! From morning to night, you’ve got friends to meet up with, activities to share and a beautiful environment around you. From fine dining, to sunny courtyard lunches, our chef prepares meals meant to be savored.
Constant stress can have severe consequences to our general wellbeing, and massage therapy is a very effective treatment to manage our stress levels. “Massage is more than a luxuryit’s a healing modality on a physical, mental and spiritual level. It helps in all aspects of our life. But, many people still need to understand that regular treatments are so therapeutic both physically and mentally,” says Hannah McClure, massage therapist (elementsmassage. com/wellness).
Choose from a range of active living options that compliment your personal requirements and lifestyle.
Independent Retirement & Assisted Living Community
Traditional medicines can help balance hormone levels and reduce the sense of being stressed, but the power of touch and massage reduces the cortisol and adrenaline and increases the serotonin and dopamine which reduces anxiety and depression. There may be some symptoms that are actually a health issue and it is crucial for you to work this out and talk with your medical provider. You may want to journal to help you express your feelings

Compliments of Mother Nature WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT NATURAL FOOD COLORING.
When you walk down the aisles of your local grocery store, there’s a good chance you’ll see a parent or two scrupulously reading packaging for buzzwords, like healthy, organic and natural - the list goes on. Maybe you’re one of those parents. When making food decisions for your family, you might be looking for healthy, delicious options that your children will want to eat. Notorious for being picky eaters, however, kids won’t eat something unless it looks good. So, you must add one more element to your shopping criteria: visual appeal - namely coloring. Yogurt needs to have a pretty pastel hue. Fruit juices need to have sweet shades. And each cereal flake needs to look as inviting as the box promises like more than, well, just oats. The big question: How can this happen naturally? “Natural colors are derived from all the active ingredients responsible for colors found in nature, like plants, fruits and vegetables,” says Tammi Higgins, Natural Colors Commercial Development Manager at FMC. “They’re used in food and beverages as an alternative to artificial colors made from coal tar and petroleum. Nature is able to provide bright and vivid colors in every shade of the rainbow.” Anthocyanins, derived from grapes and other fruits and vegetables, impart vivid pink to red to

purple hues in a wide range of foods, including fruit chews and fruit-based beverages. And the beetroot helps intensify the color of tomato paste or achieve that familiar red in red velvet cake. Annatto is also one of those beautiful color sources found in nature. It is the seed of the tropical bush Bixa Orellana - known as the lipstick tree - which is a plant native to Central and South America. In addition to being used as a spice in traditional cooking, annatto seeds can deliver a bright yellow to orange color, a hallmark of macaroni and cheese - a perennial family favorite. Foods with natural coloring offer a cleaner label with recognizable, non-chemical ingredients. Natural colors are derived from sustainable sources and adhere to vegan, Halal and Kosher standards. They can even be certified organic. So, as you comb the grocery aisles for healthy alternatives for your family - or the occasional candy-coated chocolate treat - look for foods enhanced with colors from nature. Remember, anytime something is added to food, like a natural color to enhance its hue or salt, to preserve it, it’s considered an additive. But when that additive comes from Mother Nature, you can feel confident that you’re making a smart choice.

Who knows, your friends may be so impressed they may just ask you for the recipe!

WEEKENDGETAWAY
Heaven on Earth Banff & Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. By Colin Anderson.
Just 80 miles outside of Calgary, Alberta is one of the most spectacularly beautiful recreational areas in North America. Banff National Park is shaped by cascading peaks, beautiful untouched forests, dozens of mountain streams, rivers, and lakes, a plethora of hot springs and countless areas to explore by foot, bike, skis, sled, or vehicle in any season. Consistently one of the most visited parks in Canada, Americans living in the west have also been flocking here for years to take in its beauty. The drive from the Gig Harbor area should take you about 11 hours, or you can fly into Calgary. From there you can take a tour bus or rent a car to get to your final destination of either Banff or Lake Louise. Expect about an hour to an hour and a half drive from the airport. Accommodations vary from budget to extravagant in both beautiful cities, but if you want an exquisite stay choose one of the two Fairmont properties. The Fairmont Banff Springs is like stepping into a European castle. The 125 year old hotel is just steps from downtown Banff and also boasts a championship golf course in the summer and ski packages during winter. A little more secluded is the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise which offers guest suites with incredible views of the lake and its surrounding peaks. Guests can explore the entire length of the lake on foot or by horse during the summer and horse drawn carriage in the winter. When the lake freezes, a skating rink is set up, and in traditional Canadian fashion a pickup hockey game always seems to pop up.

Back in Banff, you’ll find a vibrant and eclectic downtown filled with galleries, museums, culture, and of course plenty of food and drink. Despite being one of Canada’s most popular tourist destinations, the town’s population remains under 10,000 keeping the small town charm alive and well. The town itself is 4,600 feet in elevation, but the surrounding peaks climb to nearly 10,000 feet. Seemingly everywhere you turn you’ll find a peak or body of water. Banff plays home to a popular film festival, winter carnival, Rocky Mountain Music Festival and plenty of mountain biking competitions. If you go during winter, be sure to make time for one of the three ski resorts. Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village, and Lake Louise each offer its own challenge. You can learn to ski here, but frankly it’s for the experts. Sunshine Village and Lake Louise especially offer an incredible amount of double black chutes and bowls, challenging even the most advanced skiers and riders. To get away from the crowds you can find operators who will take you by snowcat or helicopter for your own private ride down the mountain. After a long day on the hills, a soak in one of the many hot springs is the perfect way to cap your day. Any time of year you’ll find adventure here and experience a landscape rarely seen by most of the world. Spend a weekend and then plan on another; you’ll definitely want to come back.
