PUBLISHER Six New Year’s Resolutions We Can All Keep! WE ALL DO IT. We set our resolutions each year and many of us work diligently to accomplish them. I love the feeling of starting over fresh and new each year. Some of us are great at sticking to the plan, while most of us usually fall back into our old habits. So this year we at Living Local set out to change that by coming up with some easy, yet powerful, resolutions that we all can keep. By taking the focus off of ourselves and putting it on others we feel these resolutions will have a bigger impact on our own lives. Month 1. Reach out to someone close to you and let them know how much they mean to you. A simple text, phone call or even message sent on Facebook will do! This simple gesture will impact you more than you know.
It’s not the good life, it’s the best life!
Welcome home to Harbor Place!
Month 2. When ordering your coffee or food at your favorite place, greet the person behind the counter with “good morning or afternoon, how is your day going?” prior to ordering. Try not to rush right into your order. Be thoughtful and polite with a smile on your face. Month 3. Pick your favorite LOCAL charity and donate $25 or more, or whatever you can spare. We most likely spend a lot more than this on things we don’t need. Although it may not seem like a lot, $25 can help tremendously. Month 4. Meet a friend for coffee, lunch or happy hour and turn your phone off, pay attention and engage.
From morning to night, you’ve got friends to meet up with, activities to share and a beautiful environment around you.
Month 5. Post a “positive” story on social media. Can we change social media and the negativity that is associated with it? Everyone try posting and engaging in positive things; you will feel much better about society, guaranteed!
From fine dining, to sunny courtyard lunches, our chef prepares meals meant to be savored.
They say it takes about 22 days to break an old habit or create a new one. Don’t wait another month, week or day to start. Continue these six simple yet effective positive gestures each month, all aimed at doing something positive for someone else. You will see not only the difference it makes in their lives but the profound change it makes in yours. Here’s to an exciting and prosperous new year!
Month 6. Be positive, optimistic and say thank you to those around you at work or home. Be determined to lead with grace. These simple yet powerful gestures can change a culture and make a difference.

ESSENTIALS A WORK OF ART
FOUR STATEMENT PIECES TO TRANSFORM YOUR BATHROOM
(BPT) - INVESTING IN A bathroom upgrade is in the cards for nearly a quarter of homeowners planning to renovate within the next 12 months, according to a new survey by Bankrate.com. Improving a bathroom is rewarding on multiple levels; if you’re selling, buyers love great bathrooms. If you’re staying, a luxurious bathroom can be a relaxing oasis where you’ll be happy to begin or end a busy day. Your bathroom is also an expression of who you are, and it should reflect not only your needs but your unique artistic flare as well. What could be more satisfying than making an artistic statement in one of the most-used rooms in your home? If you’re planning a bathroom renovation, here are four ways to make a statement in the space—and elevate your bathroom to a work of art: Choose a showpiece sink Few design elements afford such a perfect opportunity for utility and artistry to blend beautifully as does the bathroom sink. A striking statement vessel in patterned porcelain or smoky glass can be a focal point for your vanity while still providing ample space for essential functioning.

CREATE A STATEMENT
It’s not difficult to find statement-style sinks, but to truly elevate the basin to a form of art, look for options that evoke the look and feel of the era when luxury items were handcrafted by learned artisans. Kohler, a trusted name in bathroom fixtures for more than 100 years, offers Kohler Artists Editions collections that turn everyday fixtures into striking statement pieces. Whether you choose the subtle, carved texture and the complex color transitions of the Derring collection, the organic beauty of the Nature’s Chemistry glass lavatories or the old-world stylings of the Sartorial Line, each piece is a unique statement of your personal artistry. Stun with a standout shower Most Americans spend six to 10 minutes or more in the shower each day, according to multiple surveys. But a shower is so much more than just a place to get clean. A shower can soothe at the end of a trying day or invigorate your senses in preparation for a busy day ahead. Statement showers incorporate luxury features such as multiple shower heads, wall jets, hand showers, rainfall showerheads, seating, customized lighting and even sound and video. While bigger may be better in a statement shower, it may not always be possible. Start with a glass enclosure that makes the shower feel open to the room. If your space is small, choose lighter-colored tile. Bigger showers can withstand darker tile work.

Create luxury with countertops Options like granite, marble, concrete, limestone and other natural stones might be too costly for a kitchen, where you have a lot of counter space, but they’re a cost-effective way to make a statement in a bathroom where you have less square footage to cover. These highend materials pair perfectly with statement sinks to create a unique, one-of-a-kind look. Upgrade bathroom countertops to your dream material and then add luxury touches like a matching backsplash or under-counter LED lighting.

affordable adaptable alternative housing

Transformations with tubs Tub options are virtually limitless these days, and you can find statement tubs in every size and style imaginable. The tub is often the essential element homeowners and designers first fall in love with, and the one that establishes the direction for their overall bathroom redesign. Soaking tubs continue to be popular installations for bathroom renovations, according to the 2016 National Kitchen & Bath Association trend report. Whether you choose a traditional claw-foot design that evokes a bygone era, a concrete tub that creates a more modern or industrial look, or a porcelain confection with sweeping, graceful lines, you can find a statement tub to match your personal sense of artistry. Renovating a bathroom is an investment well worth the time, money and passion—and it’s an opportunity to put your artistic mark on one of the most important rooms in any home.

VOTED one of the TOP mortgage companies to work with YEAR after YEAR!
SAVE HEARTACHE AND MONEY SPEND A LITTLE EXTRA FOR THE OPINION OF A PROFESSIONAL DESIGNER BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER
IF YOU HAD JUST SPENT $7,000 on new furniture, would it have been worth an extra $100 to ensure that you were making the right decision on that investment?
For all your mortgage needs... Call me today!
Most people have this concept that interior designers are too expensive; so to save money, they try to just do it on their own. However, all the time you spent worrying, asking your friends what they think, scrolling through pictures on the Internet, and running around with color swatches, it was probably worth that extra $100, right? Most interior designers charge for their time at an hourly rate. Even if that hourly rate is $100, think of all the things that can be accomplished in an hour! Their professional opinion is worth its weight in gold if it prevents you from purchasing something that throws off the whole space.

Maybe that custom upholstered sofa just won’t fit where you thought it should. That $100 investment paid to someone who spent hours of school to learn appropriate space planning just saved your bacon on having to eat that $3,000 sofa. Or maybe it fits perfectly, but a color in the upholstery that you picked doesn’t coordinate with the new carpet and window coverings you just had installed. Darn! That $100 would have insured that it all blended perfectly. Interior designers don’t go to school to learn how to wear scarves and drink wine. We go to school to learn about how to design interior spaces and coordinate finishes. There is a big difference between someone that calls themselves an interior decorator and someone that has the professional title of interior designer. Designers are required to earn a degree from
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

an accredited university or college, work in the field for a required number of years under a licensed professional, and then pass a series of tests to earn their certification. This insures that whatever they put together not only looks good, but is safe for the people using the space. Interior designers are liable for the health, safety and wellness of the individuals using the spaces they put together. Even little things that most people don’t think about, like making sure that appropriate wall sconces are selected so that when a person is walking by they can’t bump into it or hit their head when they stand up. In a restaurant or public space, the designer insures that if there’s an emergency, there is enough circulation space that all persons can safely evacuate. There are many building codes that must be addressed when planning spaces. These professionals also insure that when you remodel, you aren’t doing something detrimental to your home, like digging into a designated plumbing trench or accidently coming up with an idea that requires an electrical or plumbing miracle. Most of the time, when you hire an interior designer, they pass along their trade discount pricing and either just charge you a percentage of the overall budget or an hourly rate, but not both. It’s like hiring a contractor—you expect that they will buy supplies for your house at their discount pricing and provide them to you at an agreed upon marked-up percentage. Long story short, hiring an interior designer could save you some major money and heartache, so don’t be afraid to budget in an extra few hundred dollars for a professional opinion.
FINANCIAL FOCUS
E X P LO R E
WHEN YOU RETIRE, WHERE CAN YOU FIND INVESTMENT INCOME?
Make Your Financial Future a Priority.
ARTICLE PROVIDED BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY FINANCIAL ADVISOR ERIN ABRIGO OF GIG HARBOR
AS AN INVESTOR, your main goals will change at different times in your life. During your working years, you need to grow as many resources as possible for retirement. Once you retire, however, you will likely need to focus more on getting income from your investments. But what are your options? There’s no shortage of income-producing investments, of course. You might immediately think of bonds, which can provide regular interest payments and probable preservation of principal, provided the bonds are considered “investment grade.” Still, if interest rates are low when you retire— as they have been for several years now— bonds might not provide you with as much income as you need. And just as importantly, the income you receive from most bonds won’t rise over time, leaving you susceptible to inflation and the loss of purchasing power. Consequently, you may also need to explore other types of income-generating vehicles, including dividend-paying stocks and real estate investment trusts (REITs). Some stocks have not only paid but also increased their dividends for many consecutive years. These stocks have historically provided the potential for rising income to help combat inflation and are typically well-run companies that strive to reward their investors. Nonetheless, you need to recognize that even these stocks are not obligated to pay you dividends, and they are free to lower or discontinue them at any time without notice. Now, let’s turn to a second type of potential income-producing asset: Real estate investment trusts (REITs). Different types of REITs are available. For
example, equity REITs invest in and own commercial properties, such as hotels and shopping centers, while mortgage REITs, as the name suggests, own and invest in property mortgages. Is one form of REIT better than another? There’s no simple answer. On the one hand, mortgage REITs are considered riskier than equity REITs. However, mortgage REITs often pay quite large dividends, although the payout can be inconsistent. (Like all REITs, mortgage REITs must pay 90 percent of their taxable income to investors in the form of dividends. Due to this requirement, REITs generally need to raise capital to finance their growth plans, and this necessity can affect their share prices.) Other factors, such as changing interest rates, will affect the value of mortgage and equity REITs differently. Specifically, rising interest rates will likely cause the market value of the property mortgages inside mortgage REITs to fall, whereas equity REITs, which own actual buildings, might actually benefit if the Federal Reserve raises interest rates, as such a move would indicate a strong economy, more jobs and greater demand for office space. In the short term, though, even equity REITs can react negatively to an interestrate increase. But over the long term, this movement can be offset by the benefits of earnings and dividend growth driven by a growing economy. Clearly, there’s much to think about when considering potential income-producing options such as bonds, dividend-paying stocks and REITs. Ultimately, you will need to weigh the merits and risks of these investments—including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk—and determine which of them, or which combination of them, are most appropriate for your needs.

SETTING GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR? FIVE WAYS NOT TO REACH YOUR 2017 GOALS BY DEBORAH OLIVE
TA K E A LO O K BAC K
DOES A SHIVER OF ANTICIPATION run up your spine when you imagine the moments—all 525,600 of them—you’ll create in 2017? You can make this the best year of your life. It doesn’t matter whether 2016 was a fabulous year or a year you’d like to kick to the curb. When you look back a year from now, what would you like to celebrate on New Year’s Eve 2017?
Writing Your Goals Our of Thin Air You can write your goals out of thin air with very little thought, or you can reflect on the highlights of the previous year of your life. 2016 is filled with clues to help clarify what you want to stop, carry forward, amplify or create. What went well in 2016? Conversely, what didn’t go well? Both your longings and your discontent provide clues so your goals have meaning for you and relate to where you are.
FIfty-seven percent of Americans don’t have an answer to that question. However, if you want 2017 to be your “best year ever,” writing your goals is almost mandatory; it increases accountability.
Playing It Safe
As a business-life coach, I have entire systems to help clients achieve their goals. Here are a few of the common mistakes people make and the corresponding antidotes.
Perhaps you were trained to write SMART goals, an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and set in Time goals. This is a good formula for writing a sentence, but not for writing goals. Yes, write goals that are specific and measurable. Attainable goals are a prescription for playing it safe. Based on current skills or incremental change, they tend to

Unleash Your Potential
take the sizzle out of goals. In six months, you can learn a new language, write a book, learn a yoga routine and so much more. Why create one-year goals based on what you do today? Playing it safe rarely creates goals that inspire us. Involving your emotions exponentially increases your chance to achieve your goals. Writing a Laundry List of Goals If you’ve written a laundry list of goals, they can become overwhelming. The antidote is to narrow your list to the most meaningful ones and harness the power of your WHY to accomplish them. When your WHY is stronger than circumstances, you’ll find ways to innovate, persevere and attract support and you’ll accomplish your goals. You can use your passion to build momentum. Not Putting Your Goals In Your Calendar
Make 2017 Your Best Year Ever DEBORAH OLIVE
Have you ever written a list of goals and not put them in your calendar? It’s far too easy for something else to take priority. That lone October goal has a much greater chance of crossing the finish line when you add subgoals. What needs to happen by September 1 to assure that you meet your October goal? By writing a series of mid-level goals, you’ll discover what you can do TODAY to take the first step. This brings you to tomorrow and next week, and you’re on your way. Going It Alone Many of us tend to do things ourselves. Seeking support from those with the expertise we need makes it far more likely to achieve our goals. Going it alone is the hard way. If you’ve made it this far, you’ve got some excellent tools to make 2017 your best year ever, and that’s what I want for you.

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL
TEEN OPEN MIC NIGHT Creativity abounds. By Colin Anderson
WHETHER IT’S THROUGH SONG, instrumentation, dance, poetry or unique art, teens in the Gig Harbor area are utilizing a unique opportunity to showcase their talents. An open mic night put on through PenMet Parks offers local teenagers a monthly venue to perform and share their creativity. Since the program’s inception in April, many talented local teens have found their way to this monthly gathering either by word of mouth or social media.
are encouraged to attend in support of the next generation of artists. Performers often stay for the entire show to listen and hear from their peers as they create their own young artistic community. With art and music on the chopping block of so many school budgets across the country, it is reassuring that young people in this community have a safe and supportive place to express their artistic side. Finding a passion gives young people focus and dedication in their lives while learning to appreciate the talents and differences of those around them. If your teen is interested in performing on open mic night, you can contact PenMet Parks or visit the open mic Facebook page at Facebook.com/ OMforteenartists for more information. Stop by on January 27 and see the amazing creativity and talents the young people of Gig Harbor want to share with their community.
Held the last Friday of each month, individuals or small groups sing, dance, play musical instruments and share creative writing and poetry pieces. During the winter months, the event is held at the PenMet owned Rosedale Hall, and once the weather warms it will transition outside to Sehmel Park outdoor amphitheatre. Teen open mic night is open to anyone between the ages of 13 and 18, and there is no cost to enter or perform. Friends, family and community members of all ages

WHETHER YOU ARE BUYING or selling your home, having someone you trust to guide you through the process can make the difference between a positive and negative experience. In Gig Harbor, the husband and wife team of Gary and Sandy Jones at Windermere Real Estate Gig Harbor Downtown has been instrumental in helping many achieve their dreams. The two have a combined 13 years of real estate experience and have lived in Gig Harbor for over 11 years. Their knowledge of the area, in everything from recreation to education,
The couple has been successful in large part due to their dedication to providing exceptional service while also creating ongoing relationships that are based on trust, communication and mutual respect. It is always their goal to protect the best interest of their clients, and they strive to make each transaction seamless, pleasant and successful. Prior to her career in real estate, Sandy taught both middle school and high school. She also was a flight attendant for 11 years and has her pilot licenses, which led to her being a flight instructor at Boeing Field. Gary served as an Air Force Fighter Pilot and joined the team in 2014 after retiring as Captain with United Airlines.

Giving back to their community is important to both Gary and Sandy, and over the years they have donated their time and resources to many organizations. They are proud to be associated with a company like Windermere that supports their philosophy. They share that since 1989 the Windermere Foundation has donated more than $30 million to programs that support low income and homeless families. TWO GRIEVING GIG HARBOR boys passionately holler for Cougar football each weekend—not because they love the team, which they do, or because they were raised to be fanatical Washington State University fans, which they were. They cry out alongside their heroic papa, Keith, for a different reason – to honor their young mama. Summer passed away late last spring after a gritty, multi-year “throw-down” with cancer. Though she suffered from omnipresent pain, she remained the brightest-smiling Coug fan you ever saw. Her grin overpowered anguished grimaces. I know all this because I counseled her amazing, elementary school-aged sons – dark-eyed Brodie and toe-headed Hudson – through the 19 months leading up to eternity. With the family’s permission, here is that story. Early on, her boys and I made “get well” posters for Summer and “I love you!” collages for Dad. The scent of markers and glue filled my office. At the boys’ insistence, we always copied and pasted online images from Pullman on these
creations. Weeks and months slipped by. Though Summer grew weaker, she joyfully endured drives to the Palouse and occasionally lofted a crimson and grey mini-football to her sons. When her body became too weak to stand, she read books to the boys on her bed. Thus began the final chapter of her life. As she started to lose consciousness, I listened to her oldest boy’s questions about heaven on the dark shoreline of Horsehead Bay. Twenty hours before she departed, I lightly held her weak hand and whispered, “I’ll help watch over your boys.” I meant it with all my heart. At Summer’s graveside service, I glimpsed her father, Jerry, tenderly kiss her casket while her mama, Barbe, wept. Keith’s lip trembled. His sunglasses hid his tears. Haven of Rest workers lowered that dark-stained wood into the earth. Tiny Hudson nodded as I breathed words of comfort. Brodie forced a weak grin. Since that moment, I cannot think of WAZZU without remembering Summer. Sometimes I

smile while recalling how she became half of the most quintessential Cougar couple that I’ve ever met. Upon arriving for undergrad work in Pullman, Summer promptly joined “Coug Guys and Gals,” where she ultimately helped recruit quarterback Jason Gesser. An awesome, nonfootball man appeared soon after. Summer’s close college friend, Danielle, hearkens back to when Keith and Summer first dated. “She called him her ‘best friend,’ as she ran ahead, up the campus hill, to walk with him,” said Danielle. Life became a blur of change – marriage, two playful boys and a home next to Gig Harbor. The two constants? Love for one another and WAZZU football – including season tickets for the past four years. Though Summer is gone now, Dad still tries to get the boys back to those rolling wheat hills. After arriving on Friday afternoons, they

often head to Cougar Cottage for lunch and either have dinner at Sella’s or Black Cypress (where Summer always had the carbonara). Hudson and Brodie stay up late to see the WSU marching band stop by, while Keith and Uncle Dane hang out at the nearby fire.
“Hudson,” I offered, “the school has a gift for you. Would you like it now, or would you rather receive it privately in the hallway?”
After Saturday breakfast at Old European, Dad and sons play at the Rec Center. The Brodester and Hud Man usually attend “Cougar Prowl,” trying to high-five all of the coaches and players as the team heads into the stadium.
I handed him the headgear, my voice catching in my throat. I turned away, embarrassed. Thankfully, his veteran teacher helped me to come up for air.
Once inside, the family sits right where the old press box used to be – the place where Keith’s bride was at home socializing and keeping an eye on the game. Afterwards, they celebrate victories. Grief pangs are eased, if only for a while. Sunday afternoons Dad and sons hit Cougar Country on the way out. Though those little fellas’ hearts may feel a wee bit empty, their tummies get filled with comfort food. Monday morning brings a return to Lighthouse School, where they are cherished.
Hudson crinkled his nose – just like his mama used to — and whispered, “Now.”
At the sound of Rose’s giggle, I looked back to see Hudson—now wearing the plastic shell (chinstrap buckled and all)—completing his presentation. And I realize – that kiddo and his brother are going to be just fine. Someday. Sometimes I still glimpse the boys outside the glass doors near my office. Once or twice I could swear I saw them tossing that little crimson and grey football that Summer once held in her hands. I imagine her smiling down.
This fall art teacher Tami Sullivan and another staff member collaborated to restore a childsized Cougar helmet for Hudson. When I entered bubbly Rose Hove’s room to present it to him, he was leading “show and tell.” Near the end of his spiel, he nonchalantly produced a laminated photo; in it, his evergrinning mama stood cheek-to-cheek with her little boys. I gave silent thanks that I’d arrived at just the right time.

S U C O IN F The Tradition Continues: New owners of esteemed brokerage continue charitable endeavors BY DAN AZNOFF. PHOTOS BY DIANE FETZNER.
REAL ESTATE HAS ALWAYS BEEN more than just a livelihood for the Morris family. Helping people buy and sell homes gave Tom Morris Sr. and his sons Tom and Dave the resources to give back to the community they love since Purdy Realty was established in its current location in 1956. The current incarnation of the business established by the family patriarch remains at the same location, 11515 Burnham Dr. in Gig Harbor. The faces inside may have changed over the decades and so has the name on the outside of the building. The one thing remains consistent is the company’s inherent commitment to Morris’ belief of giving back to the people of Gig Harbor. Dave Morris took on the reins of his father’s enterprise 40 years ago and changed the name to Realty One. The office became a Keller Williams franchise in 1999 and has been part of more than 20,000 real estate transactions in the West Sound. “The mission of our office was an ideal match for the core values of Keller Williams,” said Morris. “Integrity, teamwork and the commitment to
always putting the needs of our clients first is a mainstay of the Keller Williams philosophy. Those have been our guiding principles of this company since my father open the doors of his office 60 years ago.”
Distributions are made directly from the earnings generated from managing real estate investments held by the Foundation. Tom Morris, Jr. and Dave are currently the codirectors of the Foundation.
The real estate side of the company has strived to establish standards of excellence that reach far beyond the world of escrow and open houses. Dave Morris has a long history of philanthropic activity in the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula areas. The family established The Morris Foundation in 1995, a nonprofit foundation that has distributed well over $1 million to local causes over the past 20 years.
Over the years, Dave has served on the Peninsula School Board, as a director of the Chamber of Commerce, as an officer with the Gig Harbor Rotary Club, and on the board of the Harbor History Museum.
“The tight-knit Gig Harbor community has supported us since we were kids. It’s hugely rewarding to reinvest in the place and people that mean so much to us.”

His latest cause is the nonprofit Great Peninsula Conservancy (GPC). The primary mission of GPC is to protect environmentally valuable real estate by working with landowners towards protecting and securing the properties in a natural state for generations in the future. New owners, same philosophy Morris is confident that the same generous attitudes toward the community will be carried on by Spencer Hutchins and Nicole Burnett when they complete the purchase of the Keller Williams franchise in early 2017. Along with the purchase, Burnett now serves as the new

paths—Burnett to Linfield College and Hutchins to Gonzaga University in Spokane and the University of Washington School of Law. Despite their divergent tracks, the pair stayed in touch and maintained a close friendship.
“This sale of Keller Williams Gig Harbor to the new owners represents a historic event in the Gig Harbor area real estate industry,” said Morris. “Spencer and Nicole will maintain the high ethics that has always been shared by every agent who ever worked in our office and with every client we have served.
Parallel paths They were both surprised when they discovered that each had gotten into real estate without the other knowing it! It was even more interesting when they realized they had each gone to work for the same company—Keller Williams—within a few months of each other. From there, it was an easy decision to partner together to form the Burnett Hutchins Real Estate Group.
“The new energy will take our message and our philosophy to even more people who live and work in Gig Harbor and the neighborhoods we have served.” Hutchins is a lifelong resident of Gig Harbor and keeps up on zoning codes and building regulations as a member of the city’s Planning Commission. He also serves on the board of directors for the Lighthouse Christian School as well as the Tacoma Youth Symphony. In his rare spare time, he volunteers hours as an elder at the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church.
The partnership quickly turned fruitful. Burnett and Hutchins extended their interest in the real estate business quickly to the Keller Williams brokerage where they worked. Dave Morris and Pam Sosky, the previous Operating Principal and Team Leader at the West Sound office, were instrumental in drawing Burnett and Hutchins into the real estate business.
Burnett graduated from Gig Harbor High School with Hutchins in 2004 and from Linfield College in McMinnville, OR four years later. She is currently a member of the Tacoma Pierce County Association of Realtors Board of Directors.
“There is no organization we’d rather be connected with than Keller Williams,” said Burnett. “The people here are amazing. From our offices in Silverdale and Gig Harbor to the region and beyond, KW is truly a family.”
Burnett and Hutchins first met their sophomore year. They became close friends and even celebrated together as walking partners at their high school graduation. The high school classmates pursued separate educational

“The tight-knit Gig Harbor community has supported us since we were kids. It’s hugely rewarding to reinvest in the place and people that mean so much to us.”
“This company has a long history in our community. We honor the legacy of the Morris Family and their ongoing leadership,” said Hutchins. “We look forward to helping usher in a bright new chapter for Keller Williams West Sound.”
Linda Petersen has been selling real estate in Gig Harbor and the surrounding communities with the Morris family for 33 years. She is a one-woman booster club for the brokerage as well as her hometown. Gig Harbor, she said, is a desirable place to live as well as the gateway to the outdoor popular destinations of the Olympic Peninsula.
The friendship that brought the high school classmates together helped them pursue ownership opportunities and only strengthened the personal and professional bonds they share. Hutchins and Burnett consider the opportunity to work together as part of their lifelong bond and professional destiny.
She looks forward to working with the new ownership to share the benefits of the community as a place where people want to work and live.
“We’ve been great friends most of our lives,” said Hutchins. “Who knew that one day we’d be business partners and co-owners of a real estate company!”
“Once you know about all that Gig Harbor has to offer, why would anybody ever leave?” she asked rhetorically. The new owners look forward to a bright future for Keller Williams West Sound and the real estate brokers who work together to be part of the Gig Harbor community.

New business provides healthy meals for those on the go By PATTY HUTCHENS

Owner Abbie Cates said initially KnifeForkSpoon will offer dinner, breakfast and desserts. “I hope to expand into smoothies, locally sourced food and menus geared towards specific health conditions such as bariatric needs, healthy heart and maintaining a sharp mind,” said Cates.
EATING HEALTHY. It is something we all strive to do, but when we lead busy lives with kids, jobs and more, many tend to turn to the convenience of grab-and-go foods. Fortunately for Gig Harbor, there is a new convenient, healthy option that will help those with hectic lives achieve their goal of eating fresh, healthy foods. Opening in January, just in time for your New Year’s resolution, is KnifeForkSpoon, a business that provides healthy, ready-to-cook food at an affordable price. And the good news? It takes minimal time to prepare, making it easier for those who struggle to balance careers, family and other commitments, achieve their goal of a healthy lifestyle.
Each week, Cates will list her menu on the website. While some items will be repeated, she will continually introduce new dishes. Cates does all the slicing, dicing and prep to build the meal and freezes the food. “Some of it will go directly from the freezer to the oven or crockpot, while some will need to be defrosted before going on the grill or stovetop,” explained Cates of the convenience of the meals she offers. And because the food is frozen, it can accommodate one’s schedule. “It’s never precooked so you aren’t warming up food and eating leftovers,” said Cates. “It’s fresh and cooked to your specification by using simple, visual cooking instructions.” KnifeForkSpoon provides healthy, homemade dinners with no waste of fresh, unused ingredients. There are no prepackaged convenience items; instead Cates creates whole food recipes, ensuring you are consuming the food in its freshest state. And if you are one of many people who experience food allergies or have specific dietary needs, Cates said she is able to accommodate that as well. Cates has lived in the Pacific Northwest for nearly 14 years, and prior to that lived in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Colorado. She discovered this area of the country when she accepted an engineering position at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 2003. Living in Port Orchard, she spends nearly all of her awake hours in Gig Harbor since her children started attending Harbor Montessori School here. “Our life has slowly transitioned to be predominantly in Gig Harbor,” said Cates. She is excited about her new venture and is grateful to the support she receives from her family and friends. “(They are) the network that keeps me going on a daily basis. The people that challenge me to think outside the box and stick to my dream,” said Cates, who adds she appreciates her husband who believes in her and her plans and said “yes” when she

suggested quitting her comfortable job of 13 years. Be sure to check out Facebook for up-to-date information. In the meantime, go ahead and make that New Year’s resolution to begin eating healthier; you will find the perfect partner to make that happen with KnifeForkSpoon. “We can help you prep for a party, make meals for new parents, or someone just home from the hospital,” said Cates. “The sky is the limit with what we want to do and can do, all you have to do is ask and we’ll find a way to make it happen.”

Peninsula High School PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL senior Jonathan Brewster loves to be challenged. As a three-sport athlete who competes in crosscountry, swimming and track, he pushes himself physically. But Jonathan shares that there is much more to competing than the physical aspect. “Our physical bodies train and work hard all through practices to get us to a point to succeed,” said Jonathan. “But when it’s time to compete, it’s your mind that drives your body through its breaking point to that finish line.” Jonathan has lettered three years in crosscountry, four years in swimming and two years in track. “I made it to State junior year of cross-country and Districts two years of swim,” said the captain of the cross-country and swim teams. Jonathan has a cumulative 3.76 GPA and has taken AP Physics and is currently enrolled in AP Calculus and AP Economics. In the fall, Jonathan plans to attend either

Oregon State or Washington State University and enroll in their Army ROTC program. “I would like to pursue a career in serving my country,” said Jonathan who adds that he would like to specifically go into aviation. He would also like to pursue a teaching degree in U.S. History or Math. “I have always loved to be around other people and be a part of putting well-functioning students into society.” Jonathan said he enjoys cross-country the most and will miss his teammates who he considers family. And of course there is the competition that he will miss as well. “I enjoy the hard work that it involves, that feeling you get after a hard practice is done that you have done something that hardly anyone else could do. It’s that accomplishment and the competition that makes me love the sport.”

URSULA ANDREN: Gig Harbor High School AT JUST 17 YEARS OF AGE, Ursula Andren has achieved a great deal. As the MVP for the Gig Harbor High School swim and dive team for the last three years, she has made her mark in the swimming world. She has attended senior sectionals in club swimming and has made the finals nearly every meet since she was 11 years old. She has also traveled to various meets across the country including junior nationals in Orlando, Florida. “I was fastest in the Pacific Northwest when I was 12 years of age in the 100 breaststroke,” said Ursula. Ursula shares that during her freshman year she, along with three teammates, broke the record for the 200 medley relay. But it is not just in athletics where Ursula has excelled. In addition to taking three AP courses and two honors courses, Ursula is also part of the a club that educates her peers about HIV and AIDS.
an educator and an activist all in one. “I am passionate about sustainability and the earth we live in and how to protect it,” she said, adding that she hopes to help as many human beings as possible to be treated fairly and equally. Ursula plans to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa where she will walk on for the swim and dive team. She said one thing that she has learned through athletics is to be patient and strong. “Every single one of my coaches saw something in me that I struggled to see,” said Ursula. “They taught me to have faith in myself and to be strong in my hardest times.”
When asked about her career interests, Ursula said she would like to be an environmentalist, 7700 Pioneer Way #202 Gig Harbor, WA 98335 www.cougarwear.com 253.224.1408 Open 7 Days a Week

STARTING OUT IN THE WORKFORCE can be overwhelming. Whether you are ready to begin a new career or going back to work after time away, there are many things to consider. How will I market my business? How will I meet people? How can I balance my career and my family?
CREATING CONNECTIONS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PROVIDES NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL AGES
BY PATTY HUTCHENS GigHarborLivingLocal.com
In Gig Harbor, the Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Young Professionals of Gig Harbor, a group of members under 40 who are eager to connect with one another and share experiences and ideas. Erin Abrigo, the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce, said the Young Professionals has been revived over the last year and is now going strong with monthly meetings that are attended by approximately 25 people. Initially, it was difficult to find a meeting time that allowed people to regularly attend. “We found that lunch meetings are much better,” said Abrigo, citing the demands of parenthood that often require young professionals to be home in the evenings. The monthly gatherings allow the members to get to know one another, share ideas on everything from marketing one’s business to balancing

family life. “Each meeting we also have a speaker,” said Abrigo of the educational aspect of the group. The topics of presentation are vast and have included social media, planning for retirement, what it means to be a board member of a nonprofit organization and leadership skills. At times it is members of the Young Professionals who speak, and occasionally outside speakers will present. The meetings take place the second Wednesday of each month at 1pm, and the group rotates places monthly, providing exposure for different restaurants and coffee shops that are chamber members. “We try to spread the love,” said Abrigo of providing business to various locations. Each person is responsible to purchase his or her own lunch if they choose to eat. The meetings typically last a minimum of 60 minutes but no longer than 90 minutes.
but it also gives the younger members of the Chamber of Commerce an opportunity to learn more about the function of the chamber and how it can benefit them. “Nationwide, the biggest struggle among chambers of commerce is to reach the younger people,” said Abrigo. “This group is our future chamber.” Chamber and Young Professional member Jamie Taylor shares that the group is vibrant and growing. “Membership in Young Professionals is a great way to grow professional relationships, experience personal development and engage in community service contributions,” said Taylor of the group. “Membership is a great way for new and existing young professionals to get connected.” Currently, there are no dues to be a member of the Young Professionals; the only requirement is that one’s business be a member of the chamber.
The Young Professionals group is not only an opportunity for networking and education,
Being a member of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce and of the Young Professionals has been a wonderful experience for Abrigo, and she encourages more young people to become involved. “I have gotten to know a lot of people from other businesses and have met key people in our community by being involved in the Chamber,” said Abrigo. And of course there is the benefit of increased business, but that is not something that happens overnight. “You have to do the work, and it will actually start to happen.” There are three points that she states are key to business growth through the Chamber, “Be consistent, do the work and be yourself.” Abrigo said it is refreshing to meet other professionals her age who share the same struggles, and she has been blessed with not only the great business relationships, but also the many friendships she has established through her involvement with the Chamber and the Young Professionals.

Taylor said that the group is consistent in numbers, and they hope to continue and expand over the upcoming year. “We would like to identify projects or events in the community that we could be a part of, partnering with a nonprofit organization to help raise funds,” said Taylor. “ We want to make a difference in our community!” She adds that leadership and educational training is also something the group would like to focus on in the immediate future. Rules for Optimal Health By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor.
I AM CONSTANTLY AMAZED at how much information is out there about food and fitness. So many “experts have what they believe to be the right way, and usually they are vastly different from each other. Remember that the right way is the one that works for YOU! We all have different bodies. We all respond differently to how we train and how we nourish. It can be overwhelming to know what direction to go in no matter how much you research. You will know what works for you better than any professional out there. With 2017 upon us, it is a great time to figure out what daily habits are best for you and your loved ones.
I have been in the fitness industry for longer than I care to think about, and I am still on a constant quest for more knowledge. Research changes what we know to be healthy on a consistent basis. Fads come and go, but here are the things I know for certain (and by certain I mean until I decide otherwise): 1.
Anyone who feels the need to dismiss and belittle other training methods without educating you on safer or more effective procedures is not confident in their methods.
H E A LT H Y T I P
Stick to a Schedule! It helps maintain healthy body weight. Waking up, eating meals and going to bed at the same time each day can help you lose weight, because it allows your body to anticipate the next activity and find the perfect balance. GigHarborLivingLocal.com

We need more than one tool in our fitness toolbox. I love barbells, kettlebells, sleds, TRX, SandBells, Rip Trainers, etc. . None of them are a stand alone. As soon as a product touts it’s the only thing you need, don’t buy it.
3.
We must work our bodies in all planes of motion.
4.
Correct form is the most important thing we can learn from a trainer. Accidents happen, but you should be training to minimize injury, not create it.
5.
6.
7.
Strength before conditioning. A productive program should always set you up for success by making sure the cardio component (if there is one) is after the strength training. You are more likely to injure yourself under fatigue. Never eat anything that cannot nourish your body in some way. Nothing artificial ever. Even tossing one back can do you some good. Just don’t drink the cheap stuff. Always ask why. If you don’t know why you are doing something, why would you do it?
New Patients Only Botox at $9 a Unit
8.
You can’t be lazy and healthy. Put as much effort into doing something productive as you put into procrastinating, making excuses and scrambling.
9.
If you aren’t improving, are getting injured, feeling pressured or aren’t learning anything, change your training.
10. You can’t improve and decline at the same time. You are either doing one or the other, and the cool part is you get to pick which one. Choosing to do nothing is choosing to decline. Just remember, you can live your life any way you want. It’s one of the beauties of freedom. When you choose gluttony over productivity, you are choosing higher medical care costs and letting those who care about you take on the burden of your bad choices. Kind of says something about you. 11. Love your life. If you don’t, change it. If you can complain about something, you can do something about it. Have a great New Year and do something productive!

CONQUERING YOUR FEAR OF THE DENTIST YOUR ORAL HEALTH IS WORTH IT
BY RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS
MENTION A DENTAL APPOINTMENT and no doubt you’ll hear an audible groan from someone in the room. Many people dread going to the dentist. For some, it’s an irrational fear. I have that same fear about heights. Even thinking about heights can make the palms of my hands and the soles of my feet sweat. I’ve tried to “push” myself out of the fear of heights by doing things that would challenge the fear—zip lining, slides for life, rope bridges in the rainforest and once, I went sky diving. You might think, “She’s crazy!” but my worst nightmares were falling dreams. I figured I could conquer the nightmares. When I was a Navy dentist, attached to the Marine Corp, I had to learn to rappel. I cried and stressed, thinking, “Why am I doing this?” The good thing is, because of the frequent exposure, my dreams of falling have gone away. If you find a dental practice you like and trust plus gradually build trust, your fear of dentistry can diminish. It doesn’t ever totally go away. I understand how you feel. It may have been a bad or painful experience that caused you to be dental phobic, or perhaps there’s no particular cause. Whatever the reason for your anxiety, your teeth and health are far too important to be neglected. Here are a few ways to help you relinquish your fear and regain control of your oral health. Confess Your Fear. Let your dentist know that you are afraid. Ask what techniques are used in the dental office to help their patients with
anxiety. They can include sedation, soothing music and calming distractions. Ask if your personal headphones are allowed. We use disposable covers for our headphones. If there’s a specific experience that led to your fear, tell your dentist. It’s possible that there are alternative treatments in use now that weren’t an option then. Don’t Go It Alone. Take a relative or close friend with you for support. We include the spouse, significant other or friend to sit in during the consultation process. It’s nice to have someone to talk with about the information you received. Pain-Free If Possible. There are new anesthetic techniques that help you get profound anesthesia, with less discomfort, even for those that are hard to numb. We offer Anutra and Onset (pre-buffered anesthesia) as ways to help our patients get numb and be comfortable. Get Psyched. You may need to try some calming techniques so that you can be in a peaceful and confident state before you arrive. That could mean breathing exercises, physical exercise or meditation to help you prepare for your visit. Or it could be considering pre-sedation the night before so you get a good rest. People that are rested have less discomfort. The most important thing is to make that first step and go to the dentist. Don’t be shy about your dental anxiety, you’re not alone. Anxiety and discomfort are temporary. But a healthy smile—that’s a lifetime.

DOES THE MERE THOUGHT of a gym membership freak you out a little bit? All those people. All those weird machines. The locker room. What do you wear? What do you do? Gad-zooks. The sweat is beginning to bead up across your forehead and you haven’t even parked your car in the parking lot. Thoughts are whirling around in your head, and you fear the worst. What if I fall off the treadmill? What if I drop a weight on my toe? What if I trip over my own tennis shoes? What if my pants split at the seam? What if I walk into the men’s locker room by mistake? What if I see someone I know and I look like a fool? I know firsthand how intimidating it is to take your first step into a gym. Any gym can feel overwhelming. It doesn’t matter if it is a big box franchise gym or a smaller individually-owned establishment. Everyone is moving around on the equipment in a well orchestrated symphony while you are standing by the water fountain wondering what to do, if you wore the right clothes and just where you fit in. Even the cardio pieces appear to be a robot from a strange sci-fi movie. You aren’t certain whether you step on it, run on it, sit on it, crawl on it and the buttons available to push are endless. Right? Don’t worry because everyone feels this way at first. You should have seen me the first time I walked into the gym. I was a mess. Keep in mind that nobody was born at the gym so don’t be afraid of anyone or any machine. Every facility has qualified trainers to hold your hand every step of the way. They will show you the equipment, the free weights, the class structure and tell you in great detail what to do. No worries. This may seem overwhelming at first, but don’t get discouraged. It is a lot easier than it sounds. Hire a trainer who can provide you with a workout log. This is crucial,
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

especially during your first thirty days. The workout log will keep you on track and hold you accountable to the goals that you set for yourself. Write down all the muscles you’ll be working on with room under each for tracking purposes. Then make notes about each machine such as seat position, back of the seat position and appropriate weight to begin with. I use a simple notebook with my clients. You don’t need anything fancy, just pen and paper. Knowing how to use everything the gym has to offer will make your workouts better and reduce the chances of getting hurt. This is super important. There are many great facilities in your area, do your research and find a location that works for you. There are a lot of qualified professionals in the community willing to help you as well as a slew of online fitness plans and trainers. Find what works for you, and you will be on your way to a New You. Natalie Dreger is a Certified Fitness Professional and can be reached at www.nataliedreger.com.

WINTER OFTEN REQUIRES EXTRA STEPS IN SKIN CARE COURTESY CASCADE EYE & SKIN CENTERS
DID YOU KNOW that your skin is the largest organ in your body and that it accounts for roughly 15 percent of your total body weight? Cooler temperatures during the winter months can be trying on your skin, but there are a few steps that can be added to your skincare routine to achieve a healthy winter glow. Avoid hot water. Stick to lukewarm water whenever possible to minimize stripping your skin of important moisturizing oils. Don’t forget sunscreen. Damaging rays are just as strong during winter months. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater is recommended for the most effective protection. Hydrate from the inside out. Don’t skimp on your water intake. Eight glasses per day can help to prevent dehydration, which can cause premature aging. Gently exfoliate on a regular basis. Skin cell buildup is common in cooler weather and can create a moisture-blocking barrier. Exfoliating with products containing glycolic-acid and following with a moisturizer can ease dry winter skin. Add humidity. The combination of cold weather, low humidity and indoor heating systems zap moisture in the air. Installing an in-home humidifier will help prevent your skin from drying out. Although the winter months can be taxing on skin, many people may not realize that it is the ideal time of year to visit your dermatologist for laser treatments. Lasers are available for the treatment of hair removal, skin tightening, tattoo removal, facial veins, sun damage and unwanted pigmentation. Most laser procedures require the skin to be free from sun exposure or a suntan. Hair removal lasers have evolved significantly since the days of electrolysis; today’s lasers have
the capability to treat all skin types and most hair colors. Skin tightening lasers, such as the Fraxel® and the Clear + Brilliant®, use a unique technology to stimulate collagen production, improving skin tone and texture. Michael M. Nelson, M.D. notes, “The Fraxel® family of lasers; Fraxel® Dual, Fraxel® Re:pair and the Clear + Brilliant® are where I see the results patients desire. Depending on which laser is used, a series of treatments is typically recommended and patients walk away extremely happy once their treatments are complete.” Tattoo removal has also drastically evolved over the last decade. Today’s lasers treat most pigment colors and require fewer treatments than older lasers. Red facial veins, often seen around the cheeks and nose, are easily treatable with an excimer laser—designed to remove the unwanted veins in a few simple treatments. Sun damage is one of the most common concerns treatable with laser. The Fraxel®, Clear+ Brilliant® and IPL lasers are ideal for pigmentation concerns; a consultation will determine which laser is used. “A consultation is crucial for a laser patient”, Kimberly A. Wenner, M.D. states. “I want to evaluate a patient’s skin type, discuss their concerns and develop an individualized treatment plan unique to their needs.” The skin renews itself every 28 days, allowing us each an opportunity to improve our skincare habits. Developing a healthy skincare regimen early in life is ideal, but it is never too late to begin. If you’re not sure where to start, schedule a visit with your dermatologist today. Drs. Michael M. Nelson and Kimberly A. Wenner are dermatologists practicing at Cascade Eye & Skin Centers. For more information, visit www. cascadeeyeskin.com or any of their six South Sound locations, 253.848.3000.

Not only does prolonged sitting cause problems, our movement patterns also determine our strength and wholeness. A large portion of back pain is a direct result of poor movement patterns.
Healt h Re vo lt BACK PAIN: AN ESCAPABLE EPIDEMIC BY KATE MURPHY IT’S NO SECRET THAT CHRONIC BACK PAIN is a gargantuan medical matter—especially for the masses it plagues. Roughly 85 percent of Americans will experience a bout of chronic back pain during their lifetime. Back pain is the number one complaint of musculoskeletal pain, the second most common reason for a doctor’s visit (second to colds and flu), and is the leading cause of work-related absence in the U.S. And all these visits aren’t cheap. Currently, Americans fork over approximately $100 billion each year for back pain. And yet, researchers from the University of Washington found that the dramatic rise in expenditures for the diagnosis and treatment of back and neck problems has not led to expected improvements in patient health. Instead, estimated medical costs and the prevalence of back pain continue to increase simultaneously. We

“Foundation Training is unlike anything I have tried before. It is similar in many ways to yoga but also very different. Foundation Training has helped me reconnect with muscle groups that have long been dormant and absent from their intended function. It has truly changed the way I think about my body and how I move in everyday life. It has become part of my everyday routine, and I have become much stronger and have more flexibility than I can remember ever having. I am now pursuing activities I had given up on years ago. I really believed there was no hope for my back and the pain I had dealt with for years. I now have a different perspective. It has really changed my life! I am forever grateful!” - Brock
have to ask ourselves, what are we missing? What’s to blame for your back pain? Unfortunately, when we arrive on this planet it’s without a user’s manual. Most of us are not told how to sit, stand, bend or move properly. And our culture is not teaching us well. We live in a technologically advanced, industrial-driven society where most of us spend generous portions of our day sitting. When we’re not sitting, we’re moving in ways that compromise the strength of our bodies. Since we’re often not told how to do it differently, the problems compound.
When sitting for prolonged periods of time, the body begins to shut down, muscles become weaker and dormant, and they no longer help to support the spine. Desk jobs, too much time on computers, texting or standing in undesirable positions all lead to an accelerated breakdown of the spine as muscles atrophy and bones begin to rest on bones. Sitting leads to weak and tight hips that eventually lose their ability to move well. Our bodies are not designed for a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting, far more destructive than most are aware, is now being referred to as “the new smoking.” Not only does prolonged sitting cause

problems, our movement patterns also determine our strength and wholeness. A large portion of back pain is a direct result of poor movement patterns. For example, our single most important movement pattern is hinging at the hips. Imagine how a toddler squats to pick up a toy. The back is practically straight and the hips hinge behind the ankles. As adults we often hinge higher up, bending or hinging with our spines. We have lost the ability, largely, to hinge at our hips, which creates a cascade of issues. The spine has a limited number of bends throughout its lifespan before it begins to

break down. Our backs are like metal coat hangers. They only bend so many times before they become weak and eventually break. Wherever there is movement, especially improper, excessive and repetitive movement (i.e., bending) there is increased mobility. But too much mobility leads to an accelerated breakdown of connective tissue, instability and eventual pain. Why Conventional Treatment For Back Pain Is A Failure Traditional back pain treatment focuses on symptom management. Most treatments start
with rest, ice, heat and Advil, but they quickly accelerate to include muscle relaxers, injections, massage, acupuncture and chiropractics. When those fail to get rid of the pain, the majority considers surgery. Patients who suffer from failed back surgery are showing up in the offices of physicians, surgeons and pain specialists in overwhelming numbers. Sadly, as surgery continues to grow in prevalence, so will the number of failed surgeries. Back pain is no different than any other chronic modern day health issue. If we continue to treat the symptom rather than the cause, a cure will never be found. And chances are that if you’ve
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
62
suffered some episode of back pain or endure chronic back pain, it may seem reasonable to “give your back a break” by decreasing physical activity and movement. But that’s exactly the wrong approach. A Modern Day Antidote To Back Pain Rather than ignoring the underlying root of back pain—weak muscles and poor movement patterns—we should address them directly. The best way to get rid of poor movement patterns is to repeat better ones. Foundation Training (FT), created by Dr. Eric Goodman, is a series of corrective exercises designed to strengthen
our “core.” Foundation Training redefines the core as any muscle that connects to our pelvis (hips). Rather than compartmentalizing muscles with isolated exercises like crunches, FT uses combined chains of movement to encourage the core muscles to work together as they are designed to move. FT reminds the body how to bend properly by hinging at the hips and activating the glutes and posterior chain all while protecting the spine. FT also works to bring length to chronically tight muscles in the front of the body and strength and stability to weak muscles on the backside of the body. In his book, “True to Form,” Dr. Goodman describes the purpose of FT: “Foundation Training is a reaction to where our modern times have taken our bodies physically. It’s not that we don’t take care of ourselves, but the postures we’ve gotten used to while sitting in front of the computer and television prevent us from moving the way we’re meant to. Everyone puts his or her body into positions that are extremely challenging, and the body begins to support them. Foundation Training corrects those positions by working in opposition to them.” Physical therapists, trainers and others heavily emphasize core strength to remedy back pain. However, many of the core exercises being prescribed involve repetitive bending of the spine. This accelerates the breakdown of the spine. Core muscles should be strengthened in a way that lengthens the muscles of the core, re-educating them on how to provide proper support to the spine. Hint: if you’ve been doing crunches to strengthen your “core,” chances are you’re adding to the problem.

WITH ALL THE OPTIONS, WHAT WILL YOU CHOOSE? “I am an avid golfer who developed severe low back pain. Initially, I took the ‘quick fix’ surgical route and had a back operation. Months later I found myself where I started with the same severe back pain. When I was told that I needed another surgery, I knew that wasn’t the answer. I managed my pain with meds and injections over the next few months. I could hardly walk, and sleeping at night was impossible. The pain was terrible and there wasn’t much I was able to do. This is when I found a Foundation Training instructor. After our first session, my pain went from a 9 to a 6. I was blown away! I knew we were onto something. After a few more sessions, the relief was incredible! The pain was disappearing. I have learned to move in a way that keeps my back from hurting and how to strengthen the muscles along my spine. Today, I have NO pain in my legs or back. My flexibility has improved significantly. I never thought I’d be saying this, but I look forward to walking and playing golf next season. I would highly recommend that anybody try this method before any medical procedures. - Jon

Foundation Training Changed My Life
How do I get started?
And I would know all about those problems. I was a personal trainer for over 10 years before I discovered Foundation Training for myself. I experienced debilitating and chronic pain for years, and even with all of my expertise and with help from doctors, chiropractors and specialists, I found no relief. With Foundation Training, however, I was able to change my story, opt out of the symptom treatment treadmill, and help my body regain strength and freedom from pain.
If you’re new to Foundation Training, I highly recommend booking a session with a certified FT instructor. Foundation Training is unlike anything you’ve done and has a bit of a learning curve. Once you’ve learned the exercises, there are instructional DVDs with daily workouts available online to help facilitate your progress. You can search for an instructor near you here: www.foundationtraining.com. Skype appointments are also available. If you are interested in learning more, you can purchase Dr. Goodman’s first book, “Redefine Your Core, Conquer Back Pain, and Move with Confidence” or his second book, “True to Form.”
Now I can’t imagine my work as a personal trainer without Foundation Training. I became certified just over a year ago. Bicep curls and sixpacks quickly lost their appeal as I witnessed FT’s incredible potential. Now it’s all I do. It blows my mind on a daily basis. Helping others out of pain will never get old!

“My struggle with back pain had gone on for eight years, but last summer I reached a breaking point. We had just begun to build our new house, and I couldn’t even walk from room to room. When I tried, I would have to sit in a window sill and wait until the pain lessened enough to walk a few more feet. I could barely function. I was a mess. An MRI revealed the extent of the damage in my spine, and it was so much worse than I had expected. I had five bulging discs, lots of degeneration and severe spinal stenosis. My surgeon said I needed a major fusion of five vertebrae. When it looked like I was out of options, my daughter-in-law connected me with a Foundation Training instructor. I began by seeing her three times a week. It only took a few weeks for me to notice significant change. My pain was slowly melting away as I grew stronger! I can now function without pain. I go on trips again, and I can work and move for a whole day without pain. Now, when I walk through our entire brandnew house without stopping, I thank God and my trainer for helping me get to this point without surgery. Foundation Training is a major part of my daily life. I have been given my life back!” - Karin

S h i p Lap If you have an older home, there’s a chance you might have shiplap wood behind your walls, but if you don’t want to tear them down to find out, there’s an easier way. Shiplap is grooved thin wood boards that fit together precisely to prevent weather from entering a home. You can leave the boards as is, stain them or paint them whatever color you like for a fun wooden accent wall. You can also create your own shiplap look by purchasing plywood from your local home store, tacking it to your current wall and painting over it once completed.

Putting in hardwood floors can be expensive and time consuming. Maintaining original hardwoods also takes work. Tiles with the appearance of wood offer an affordable alternative, are easy to clean and maintain, and are a fraction of the cost to install. Porcelain or ceramic wood pattern tile typically runs about $1.50 to $3 per square foot. Put them in your kitchen, living room or watch your guests do a double take with wood pattern tile in your shower. Once installed, you’ll be enjoying the look of beautifully finished hardwoods with the affordability and ease of care of tile.

Nothing brings your kitchen back to life like some brand new countertops. Granite is as popular as ever, but those wanting something unique are finding plenty of different materials to make their cooking space a statement. Wood butcher blocks give a homey feel and also allow you to slice and dice right on your counters. Concrete can be formed in pretty much any color, and glass can be added for additional shine. A colorful tile backsplash really makes the counters pop! Designers are also utilizing quartz, stainless steel and glass to meet each client’s style.

Farm s i n k If your bathroom sink is showing wear and is dated, try raising it up and bringing a modern look to your home with a vessel sink. Unlike traditional sinks, these are not built into the vanity but sit above them. You’ll find all shapes, sizes and colors, and a nontraditional faucet will give you a cool new look. Try adding a farm sink to your kitchen. Often installed as a large deep rectangle, the face of the sink isn’t hidden by cabinetry which allows the material to shine or allows you to create a custom design along the outside. Stainless, concrete and copper provide a modern look to this classic.
Ac c o rd i o n D o o r s You’ve most likely seen accordion doors at a hotel meeting space as a way to separate one large space into several smaller ones. Savvy designers are utilizing this concept as a way to replace doors around the house. Accordion doors are easily installed around closets and are perfect for the home office that only needs quiet and privacy on occasion. Those with large patios can do full standing wood and glass doors that fold up, joining indoor and outdoor space together. Wood and different color fabrics are most common, however artists are also using these to create beautiful fold-up murals.

T I M B E R AC C E N T S Timber accents are usually found in cabins or lodge-themed homes, but timber frame accents are making their way into new construction as well. Timber accents are spotted around windows or at the peak of the roof. A uniquely angled timber frame also creates an eye-catching archway around your front door. Exposed beams across high ceilings add character to master suites and living rooms. If your home is already in place, adding timber accents is fairly simple with the right licensed contractor. 2017 Northwest Real Estate Outlook
I
t takes more than six hours to travel the almost 400 miles between the picturesque town of Gig Harbor in Western Washington and the flourishing communities of Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene on the Idaho side of the boundary between the two states. In terms of the real estate market for 2017, the areas may as well be on different planets. While homes for sale between $500,000 and $1 million west of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge sell almost as quickly as they are listed, dwellings in the same range in the lakeside communities of Idaho go unsold for months at a time. Interestingly, the homes that disappear quickly in Idaho are priced either below $350,000 or above $1 million. Like other areas in the Northwest, both areas have seen significant increases in prices in the past year. The average selling price of homes in Gig Harbor surged 11 percent in 2016. The real estate prices in

both areas of Idaho are on the rise as well, however the increases have been in the single digits. “Prices have rebounded from their lows during the downturn that started in 2008, but they are still not quite to the level they were at before the recession” said Eric Skinner, owner and associate broker at Century 21 RiverStone Real Estate in Sandpoint, ID. Skinner emphasized that houses that are priced correctly continue to sell quickly, but there are numerous sellers who continue to believe the seller’s market gives them the leverage to demand premium dollars for an average piece of property. “Every home will sell…if it is priced right,” said Skinner. As proof, Skinner said he sold two homes during December for more than $1 million, including one that sold for over $6 million. The owner/broker added that he has a list of people waiting for

the right home at the right price. Many of the buyers of homes under $400,000 come from people who work at or own small businesses in each community. The higher priced properties are usually purchased by buyers from out of state (often California) who are either looking to return to a simpler lifestyle or as second homes.
“Gig Harbor is a destination where people want to live,” Petersen explained. She indicated that the state did the community a favor by raising tolls on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The increase forced business owners to create job opportunities on the Kitsap County side of the waterway.
Jackie Suarez has the office directly across the hall from Skinner. She said the median price of a home sold in Bonner County last year was just over $258,000. Prices are significantly higher in Coeur d’Alene.
The strong real estate market, she said, has been enhanced by innovative entrepreneurs who have established businesses close to large corporations and major hospitals, with access to vendors that provide the ingredients that are essential to every successful enterprise.
Double digit increase The formula for Realtors is more straight-forward in Gig Harbor, according to Linda Petersen with the West Sound office of Keller Williams. She said the number of homes sold through her office for more than $1 million increased by 17 percent midway through December of 2016 compared to all of 2015.

“We have a lot of cash buyers who are either moving up or downsizing. They desire the waterfront fishing village that Gig Harbor once was. The difference now is that we have Home Depot, Costco and all the modern conveniences,” said Petersen. Like markets in other desirable communities on the West Coast, the lack

of inventory has pushed up the prices of homes in Gig Harbor. The average singlefamily dwelling in Gig Harbor jumped from $415,000 in 2015 to more than $463,000, while the average time on the market has fallen from 72 days to under two months. Month to month, the Keller Williams office has been involved in 30 more home sales during 2016 than the year before. The downside of the market, said Petersen, is that rising prices and uncertainty over interest rates could force first-time buyers to look outside the area to find something they can afford. “In most cases, it takes the income of one—and sometimes two—professional incomes to justify the mortgage on a desirable home in The Harbor,” said Petersen, who has been a real estate professional for more than 33 years. Her recommendation for people interested in buying in Gig Harbor or elsewhere in Kitsap County is to, “Do your homework before visiting an open house.” She advises prospective buyers play the game of “Know Your Financials.” Skinner’s advice for prospective buyers in Idaho has more to do with perceptions than bank accounts. “People come to Idaho often wanting a sprawling home on acreage 15 miles from the
“PRICES HAVE REBOUNDED FROM THEIR LOWS DURING THE DOWNTURN THAT STARTED IN 2008, BUT THEY ARE STILL NOT QUITE TO THE LEVEL THEY WERE AT BEFORE THE RECESSION” closest town,” the broker/owner said with a sly smile. “Once they get out here, they realize that five miles out town is more than enough distance from the conveniences of town.” Skinner said the five stop lights in Sandpoint can be, “Too much of an adjustment for some people.” His experience is that properties in Coeur d’Alene move more quickly. “Coeur d’Alene is a metropolis by comparison. It has 50 stop lights.” Suarez added that higher interest rates have created a rush among buyers to buy vacant land in Idaho for their dream homes. Most of the new owners, she said, plan to build within two to five years. The real estate experts in Gig Harbor and Idaho have similar advice for individuals who are contemplating a move to either area. “There is never a better time than today to begin living your dream,” said Petersen. Skinner was more emphatic. “With a list of people waiting for the right property at the right price, waiting too long can mean you’ll miss out on your vision of paradise.” Dan Aznoff is a freelance writer who was finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the toxic waste crisis. Housing Market Trends by colin anderson The greater Gig Harbor area continues to see rising real estate values. According to Linda Petersen of Keller Williams, an agent for 30 years, values have increased 11 percent over last year alone. People are looking for many different things in a home, but according to Petersen, there are a few amenities that stand out most to those looking for their dream home.

OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE People in the Pacific Northwest are used to the rain, so being outside in a little drizzle doesn’t stop them from having a good time. Whether it’s a covered custom patio, built-in barbecue or entire outdoor kitchen, many buyers crave an outdoor entertaining area. Petersen says custom fire pits, rock fireplaces and barbecue areas with granite accents are particularly popular. Having an outdoor entertainment area allows you far more space for family and friends and hopefully alleviates the need for guests to mingle in the kitchen during parties.
#Trending UPGRADES “Kitchen upgrades and new construction are still the number one choice when buyers are looking for a home,” said Petersen. If it’s not a brand new build, buyers definitely want an up-to-date cooking and eating area. Almost as important are updated bathrooms, starting with the master and then moving to other areas of the house. New construction offers homebuyers their choice of layout, design, colors and amenities, instead of changing an existing home to their style. Open family or great rooms are also a must have for many shoppers.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

EMPTY NESTERS As the baby boomer generation is hitting retirement, many empty nesters are looking for less space to clean and yard to maintain. These older buyers are seeking single-level living or, at the very least, having their master suite on the main floor. These buyers still want visitors and places to entertain, so having large family rooms and outdoor entertaining areas are also high priority to retirees. A large wall for a flat screen and the newest wireless technology doesn’t hurt either.
CASH BUYERS With the average home price jumping from $415,000 to $463,000, many are using proceeds from the sale of their original home to avoid mortgaging their new home. “Many sales were to cash buyers compared to 2015 with the sale of past homes and/or investments turning into retirement homes or second homes, said Petersen. As with much of the greater Seattle area, there is only so much room to build so homeowners are making the move now as prices continue to rise.

Winter By Fo o t
By Colin Anderson
A
S WE COME SMACK INTO THE MIDDLE of the coldest part of the year, many of us have retreated under cozy blankets, huddled with hands around warm drinks and consuming comfort foods. January through March is mini-hibernation time for thousands across the Northwest. While it might seem logical to stay inside and wait out the cold until spring, being sedentary for too long can lead to weight gain, low motivation and feelings of downright grumpiness. It can be a challenge to get motivated to exercise during the winter months, but a great way to keep in shape and see some amazing outdoor scenery is on snowshoes or on cross country skis. There are countless trails with miles of back country to explore. From flat, easy loops to mountain top hikes featuring stunning views and untouched powder, the options seem limitless. Both are easy to learn, and as you progress, you’ll soon be looking for the latest and greatest gear and far-out trails. Snowshoeing has seemingly been around since humans have lived in frozen environments. People all around the world learned long ago that by spreading out the surface area under their feet, they would not sink nearly as deep into snow drifts, making getting to places easier and a lot less work. Through much of time wood was the primary material available, and snowshoes resembled giant tennis rackets. Today, you’ll find a much more efficient mode of travel with shoes that are typically only 2 to 3 feet in length and built from ultra-light and strong materials often weighing less than 5 pounds each. Crampons along the bottom of the shoe give you added grip in varying terrain and ice, and most people also bring hiking poles for added balance. Just slip your sturdy winter boots into the shoes and you’re ready to go. Cross country skis have also evolved from 7- to 8-foot long solid wood gliders to unbelievably light weight cambered skis that allow you more push with each motion. There are two common forms of cross country skiing. Classic style is used inside a grooved track. Keeping both skis in the track, the skier pushes down and launches himself forward on one ski, then glides until momentum slows and does the same with the other ski. Freestyle or skate skiing requires a little more coordination. Skiers go outside the track to the groomed flat surface and use a skating motion much like you would see on a sheet of ice. This allows the skier to go much faster but takes more time to master.

Where to begin Ideally, you’ll want to begin in the gym on a cardio machine. Going straight from the couch to cross country will really punish the lungs, and you might not be able to go very far. Even those who train year-round will tell you the first day on skis gets their heart rate up quickly. This is also one of the excellent benefits to the sport. Cross country skiing is one of the best full body exercises you can do. As you push with your poles, you are engaging your biceps, triceps and shoulders. When you kick with your legs, you’re utilizing quads, hamstrings, calves and abdominal muscles. Your heart rate accelerates, giving you an excellent aerobic workout, plus your body tends to burn more calories exercising in the cold. With so much activity going on you warm up quickly so even on cold days most skiers wear lightweight caps, gloves, and jackets and you won’t need to bundle in bulky clothing. If you haven’t had the pleasure of snowshoeing or cross country skiing, a good place to start is usually at your nearest ski mountain. Many of our resorts and mountains have separate groomed trails for cross country and snowshoeing. They can also provide rental equipment so you can try before you buy. Check with outdoor stores like REI for lessons and group events, and Nordic Clubs. Equipment can also typically be rented from these retailers. The hiking and biking trails at state parks are often converted into groomed trails during winter as well. Check with your closest park to see if it is accessible during winter months. Seeing your favorite hiking trail in winter often gives you a completely different perspective than during the spring and summer months. Destinations Winthrop, Washington: Few people know that the largest groomed Nordic ski trail system in the country is right in our backyard. The Methow Valley surrounding Winthrop has 120 miles of continually groomed trails. The interconnected trail system is surrounded by more than a million acres of forestland which offers incredible scenery as you glide around the trails. Local naturalists also provide scheduled scenic snowshoe hikes at a variety of distances. Guests learn about the surroundings while taking in some truly awe inspiring views. This is also one of the best places for dog lovers as 35 miles of the trails are open to dogs. If you have a mutt that loves

to run, consider skijoring. Place a harness around your dog and one around yourself (typically a rock climbing harness) and let your dog pull you around the track. Glacier National Park, Montana: Millions visit “The Crown Jewel of the Continent” each summer but you’ll find far fewer crowds, more affordable lodging, and miles upon miles of snowshoeing and back country skiing come winter. Ski loops along beautiful Lake McDonald or hike up the going to the sun road which is closed to vehicles during winter months. A stay in nearby Whitefish gives you access to all kinds of entertainment as well as downhill opportunities at Whitefish Mountain Resort.
McCall, Idaho: With five different Nordic areas McCall has trails for all levels, dog friendly skiing and snowshoeing, and even a biathlon course. Well known for year round outdoor adventure, there are also downhill mountains, ice fishing and snow tubing. You can end your day with a soak in one of the many natural hot springs in the surrounding areas. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing not only provide a great way to keep active in winter, but an opportunity to explore the mountains that surround us. The woods go silent during winter and when you’ve left the parking lot and ventured out a few miles, you’ll be amazed at the quiet and tranquility you’ll experience.

These are lifelong activities that everyone from young children up can enjoy. Taking the family out for a day in the woods is a great way to come together, teaches your children about nature, and they’ll sleep hard after a day of pushing through the snow. Seek out the trails in your area or next time you’re on a weekend ski trip, carve out a little time to try cross country skiing or hike around in today’s high tech snowshoes. With miles and miles of trails across the Northwest, you’ll never run out of places to visit and explore. There are still months of winter ahead of us and that blanket and hot chocolate at the end of the day will feel all the better after a day spent skiing or snowshoeing.
